Farm-to-Table Means Fresh, Healthy Food

Caldwell The farm-to-table movement, in which good dining is linked to local farmers, both supporting their efforts and bringing fresh, wholesome produce, meat, and other homemade products to the table, can be traced to the 1970s, when people began to rebel against a food industry that was able to deliver food from diverse locations, but only after it had been in transport for days, shortening its useful life — unless it was highly processed or filled with preservatives.

Today, farm-to-table locations have proliferated, including in the Lakes Region. Those connections between the chefs who prepare meals and the people who grow and harvest the ingredients they use mean building menus around what foods are in-season, ensuring that everything is fresh. The eateries that participate have personal relationships with those who produce the food, resulting in a useful exchange that customers can count upon to ensure what they eat is naturally flavorful and healthy.

Another benefit is to the environment. Spoilage is one of the biggest contributors to solid waste landfills, but farmers are adopting food composting to turn that waste into the nutrients that allow them to avoid chemical fertilizers, and the result can be healthier and more robust crops.

Among the local farm-to-table outlets making that happen is Beans and Greens Farm of Gilford (https://www. beansandgreensfarm.com).

Owners Chris and Lindy have made arrangements to obtain products from other area farms to give their customers a wide choice of exceptional-quality food. Located at 245 Intervale Road, the farmstand offers fresh produce, along with homemade baked goods such as breads, pies, pastries, and cookies, which rotate with the seasons to reflect what is available at the time.

Beans and Greens also operates a café, offering breakfast sandwiches, soups, hot panini sandwiches, fresh pastries, lattes, coffee, and expressos.

Its food truck sells tacos, carnitas, tortillas, and quesadillas that are specially adapted to take advantage of locally sourced ingredients. The farm has also introduced a wood-fired pizza wagon, and it provides catering services.

That is not all. Beans and Greens’ Notch Biergarten also offers nightly entertainment, and the farm has a children’s fun park to keep them entertained. Visitors also have a chance to see the farm animals.

The first farm-to-table restaurant in the Lakes Region, founded in 2012, was the Local Eatery in downtown Laconia (https://www.laconialocaleatery. com). The restaurant has established relationships with dozens of local farms, bakeries, breweries, distilleries, and artists, and it adapts its menus based upon the availability of fresh produce, meats, fish, and cheese. Every dish on the menu reflects the flavors of the region.

Another option in Laconia is Trillium Farm to Table, at 62 Canal Street (https://www.trilliumnh.com), which

focuses on sustainability and community with dishes prepared from scratch, including gluten-free and vegan options. Its menu uses local ingredients but is inspired by the cuisine of the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and California, as well as offering classic American food.

Sweet Mercy Kitchen at Hermit Woods Winery, located at 72 Main Street in Meredith, offers “a radical collab between food and drink that’s pushing boundaries and flipping the script”. Serving brunch, lunch, and dinner, Sweet Mercy also uses locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant has the advantage of being able to offer its customers a chance to pair their meals with Hermit Woods’ award-winning wine.

Examples from Sweet Mercy Kitchen’s menu include “Classy and

Trashy,” which translates to fettuccini, chili carbonara, burrata, Birch Rise Farm sausage, and potato chip crumb; or “Pig Trouble in Sweet China” — sticky roasted pork belly, ginger sushi rice, poached egg, cucumber kimchi, chili oil, and ginger snap crumble.

Another choice for farm-to-table fare is Heritage Farm Pancake House in Sanbornton (https://www.heritagefarmpancakehouse.com). Operated by Matthew and Rachel Swain, the restaurant makes its pancakes from locally milled flour and offers other breakfast choices sourced from nearby farms.

Farther afield, in Campton, is the Covered Bridge Farm Table, at 57 Blair Road (https://www.farmtablenh. com). With views of the historic Blair Covered Bridge, the restaurant uses local ingredients to create traditional meals such as Yankee Pot Roast, featuring local braised beef, as well as internationally inspired dishes, such as Pasta Fattoria with grilled chicken, bacon, spinach, roasted tomatoes, garlic cream sauce, and penne pasta.

Those looking for something different that is both healthy and tasty have all these options to choose from while living or visiting New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. It is just another reason that the Granite State can boast to those who stop by for the scenery, the recreation, or just to escape the city.

The food can be just as good, just as healthy, and just as satisfying as anything anyone has experienced, and its purchase helps keep small-scale agriculture alive.

Winnipesaukee Playhouse Presents Hitchcock Spoof Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python, and you have The 39 Steps, a fast-paced whodunit for anyone who loves the magic of theatre!

This 2-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, dozens of zany characters (played by a ridiculously talented cast of 4), an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers, and some good old-fashioned romance!

Follow Richard Hannay as his boring life soon becomes a life of mystery and chase. He meets a beautiful spy who spills a top-secret plan of international espionage; he invites her back to his apartment flat, where she is then murdered. He is suddenly caught in the middle of a chase from London to Scotland to reveal a secret that could affect the whole nation. As he attempts to uncover a secret organization called the “39 Steps”, Hannay is also wanted for murder on three continents and is wrongly pursued by the police throughout the play.

This four-person cast is sure to make The 39 Steps an unforgettable show. They include Will Nash Broyles, Teghan Marie Kelly, Rob-

ert Hooghkirk, and Seth Tucker. All four performers are fan favorites at the Playhouse, with dozens of Lakes Region credits to their names. The production is directed by the Playhouse’s founding Producing Artistic Director, Neil Pankhurst.

Pankhurst is stepping out of retirement to revisit this show, which he originally directed for the Playhouse in 2013. Pankhurst also serves as the sound designer, providing an intricate soundscape for the production. The scenic design is by Matthew S. Crane, lighting by Tyson W. Miller, and costumes by Patty Hatch Hibbert.

An Apprentice License Is a Good Option for This Fall’s Hunting Seasons If you are ready to try hunting this fall in New Hampshire, consider an apprentice license. The apprentice license allows people to go hunting, under the guidance of an experienced hunter, without having to take the Hunter Education course.

“If you have a friend or relative who is a hunter, getting your apprentice license might be a good way to get into the field this fall,” said Josh Mackay, Hunter Education Coordinator for New Hampshire Fish and Game. “We have quite a few field days scheduled and will be running them right up to November, but people may still have trouble completing the online course and the required field day in time for this year’s fall hunting seasons.”

Beginning in August, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department will conduct Hunter Education field days at the Owl Brook Hunter Education Center in Holderness, NH, and at locations throughout the state. Though they are

filling quickly, there are still opportunities to sign up for a field day if you have completed your Hunter Education online course and intend to purchase a hunting license this year. Once individuals have passed the online course, they should sign up for their field day.

Dates and spaces are limited, so register as soon as possible to reserve your spot. Additional dates will be added.

Additional venues may be added depending on staffing capacity.

After touring for two years in Girls Night: The Musical and still working full-time in International Risk Management at American Express, EEI brought Sonya Carter and her 12 years of experience at American Express on board as its production supervisor in 2009. In 2010, she was promoted to Chief Operating Officer. In addition to her responsibilities as the COO of Entertainment Events, Inc., she continues to supervise all production aspects from casting to closing night for all EEI productions.

She still performs in Girls Night: The Musical. She has played three of the five roles in the show and has amassed

over 400 performances on tour and Off-Broadway. Sonya has directed several of the touring companies of Girls Night: The Musical and originated the role of co-host Janice and directed the world Premier of WPMS: The Musical at the DuPont Theater in Wilmington, DE on June 29, 2010.

Jimmy and the Jesters Playing at Bandstand on Saturday Night The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand are excited to welcome Jimmy and the Jesters to the summer concert series in Cate Park to continue the second month of free concerts on Saturday, August 22.

Jimmy and the Jesters will be taking to the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand in downtown Wolfeboro as part of the free Saturday night concert series after making their debut during last year’s summer season.

Jimmy and the Jesters features Jimmy “Mr. Rock and Roll” Merrick on lead vocals and guitar, Peter “WildMan” Previte on vocals and keyboard, Scotty “The Horn” Groleau on sax, and Steve “Gio” Giotis on vocals and drums.

The band specializes in oldies rock, classic country, and musical mayhem,

The Weirs: History, Archaeology, and Abenaki Heritage On Wednesday, August 19, at 7 pm, the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum will host John and Jesse Casana in a joint program on Weirs Beach history and archaeology, in collaboration with the Laconia Historical & Museum Society (LHMS). and is a key source of information about the history and development of the area.

Professor Jesse Casana will then present “Archaeological Investigations of Ancestral Abenaki Settlement in the Lakes Region and the Upper Connecticut River Valley.” Some will recall the survey team from Dartmouth College conducting archaeological remote sensing investigations at The Weirs in December 2022, using a ground-pen-

etrating radar device (GPR) to gather data. This presentation is part of LHMS’s year-long focus on Laconia’s Native American heritage.

Jesse Casana earned his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago, and he is now the W.J. Bryant 1925 Professor of Archaeology at Dartmouth College, where he established and directs Dartmouth’s Spatial Archaeometry Lab (SPARCL).

His research investigates settlement and land use history, the emergence and development of complex societies, and the dynamic interactions of humans with their environment. Casana’s worldwide field projects explore large regions, embrace long periods of human history, and employ a wide range of geospatial technologies.

The Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society was founded in 1985 with the mission to promote and preserve the history and heritage of the Big Lake and its vicinity. Located at 503 Endicott Street North, next to Funspot in the Weirs, the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum is open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm through mid-October.

Search, Identify, & Appreciate: A Mushroom Hike with the SLA Join the Squam Lakes Association for a fun day dedicated to mushrooms, Saturday, August 22, from 9 to 11:30 am. Meet at the Five Finger Point trailhead at 9 am to gain some background information on mushroom anatomy, types, and foraging. After practicing our identification skills, we will depart from the parking lot and do the leisurely 3-mile hike around Five Finger Point.

Along the way, we will practice our searching, identification, and appreciation skills of these cool organisms. Participants are welcome to forage if they feel inclined, but the SLA will not be providing any assurance on mushroom

edibility. Mushrooms can only be positively identified by a professional mycologist; therefore, any foraging will be the assumed risk of the participant.

We anticipate the hike should take no longer than 2.5 hours. The program will be complete after finishing the hike. Participants are welcome to hang around and socialize or ask about other great hikes in the network!

Walking Beside History on the Cotton Valley Rail Trail

The tracks come up, the gravel is smoothed over, and what was once a railroad becomes a walking and biking path. Wolfeboro took a different approach. Here, the rails never disappeared.

On the Cotton Valley Rail Trail, hikers, cyclists, dog walkers, and cross-country skiers share the corridor with something you almost never see anymore: small vintage railroad motorcars rolling along the original tracks.

It’s an arrangement that’s both unexpected and unmistakably New Hampshire—a place where preserving history didn’t mean freezing it in time, but finding a new purpose for it.

Stretching roughly 12 miles from downtown Wolfeboro (including a portion of the Bridge Falls Path) to Wakefield near the Maine border, the trail is nearly level from end to end, making it equally inviting for a leisurely stroll, a family bike ride, or an afternoon spent

branch line from Sanbornville to carry passengers and freight to the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. Summer visitors stepped off the train ready for weeks at the lake, while local businesses relied on the line to move lumber, farm products, and supplies throughout the region.

The Boston & Maine Railroad later acquired the line and operated it for decades. By the early 1970s, after regular passenger service had faded, the corridor found new life as the Wolfeboro Railroad, a seasonal tourist railway that introduced thousands of visitors to the area’s forests and lakes from the comfort of vintage railcars. After sev-

eral ownership changes and declining ridership, the last excursion train rolled through Wolfeboro in 1986.

For many abandoned rail lines, that’s where the story ends. The tracks are removed, nature slowly takes over, and the railroad becomes little more than a memory. Instead, New Hampshire preserved the corridor. Volunteers transformed it into a public recreational trail while making sure the railroad itself wasn’t forgotten. The result is something wonderfully uncommon—a place where people can enjoy the outdoors while the railroad’s story continues alongside them.

In 1992, a small group of railroad enthusiasts received permission to preserve the remaining track and operate restored maintenance motorcars. Those early volunteers eventually became the Cotton Valley Rail Club, whose members continue maintaining the rails while restoring historic railroad equipment that might otherwise have been lost.

Many of the club’s motorcars once carried railroad maintenance crews as they inspected track long before pickup trucks became standard. Today, members search for these forgotten machines, carefully restore them, and occasionally take them out for leisurely runs along the corridor. Seeing one quietly glide past is often the highlight of a visitor’s day—a reminder that this isn’t simply a former railroad. It’s still • Rail Trail continued on page 10

The Cotton Valley Rail Trail Committee cares for the recreational trail itself, maintaining the crushed-stone surface, benches, signs, bridges, and picnic areas that make the route welcoming throughout the year. Together, these volunteer organizations have created something increasingly rare: a place where history is preserved not behind ropes or museum glass, but through everyday use.

One of the best things about the Cotton Valley Rail Trail is that you don’t LAKEto WINNIPESAUKEE have tackle all 12 miles at once.

There are numerous places to join the trail, whether you’re looking for a short walk, a longer bike ride, or simply a scenic place to spend an hour outdoors.

Many visitors begin in downtown Wolfeboro at the Bridge Falls path, others start farther east along the route at Mast Landing, Albee Beach, or the Fernald Station. terrain. Dogs are welcome too – keep them leashed and bring your waste bags. Signs at several places along the trail remind bikers to walk their bikes across the track when needed, among other courtesies.

The two causeways crossing Crescent Lake and Lake Wentworth are the trail’s signature views. Water stretches away on both sides, with loons calling across the lakes and great blue herons standing motionless in the marshes.

Painted turtles line up on sun-warmed logs, while beavers quietly reshape the surrounding wetlands as they have always done. Early mornings and evenings are especially beautiful, when the lakes become almost mirror-like, and the only sounds are birdsong, the breeze, and perhaps the gentle hum of a passing railcar.

History appears in quieter ways as well. At the eastern starting point of the trail, in Sanbornville, Turntable Park preserves one of the railroad’s most recognizable landmarks. Elsewhere, old stone culverts, embankments, and remnants of railroad infrastructure peek through the woods, subtle reminders that trains have traveled this corridor for more than 150 years. Keep an eye out for the unusual sheep passes built beneath portions of the railroad, allowing farmers to move livestock between pastures after the tracks divided their land. They’re easy to miss, but they tell a fascinating story about how

the railroad adapted to the communities it served.

If you’re visiting during the warmer months, bring sunscreen and insect repellent. The causeways reward visitors with spectacular views, but they also offer very little shade, and the mosquitoes can be enthusiastic.

Though it is remarkable that the railroad survived, it’s who has kept it alive that is even more remarkable. For more than three decades, volunteers have donated thousands of hours maintaining the trail, preserving the rails, restoring historic equipment, clearing brush, replacing signs, repairing benches, and caring for the corridor through every season. Much of that work happens quietly, behind the scenes, long before visitors arrive for a morning walk or an afternoon ride. Every freshly mowed shoulder, every repaired bridge, every restored railcar, and every welcoming trailhead reflects people who care deeply about this place. Their dedication has preserved not only a historic railroad, but also one of the Lakes Region’s most enjoyable outdoor destinations. Explore the Night Sky and Meet National PBS-Bound Documentary Children’s Author Megan Litwin ‘Saving Walden’s World’ The Gafney Library is excited to invite families and community members to two special events this August that celebrate learning, discovery, and imagination.

The first event, Skywatch, will take place on Tuesday, August 18, at 8 pm at the Wakefield Ballfields. This annual event, presented in partnership with the New Hampshire Astronomical Society, offers a unique opportunity to explore the wonders of the night sky.

Volunteer astronomers from the New Hampshire Astronomical Society will bring a variety of powerful telescopes and guide participants through the evening by identifying stars, planets, constellations, and other celestial objects visible that night. Guests will have the opportunity to view the night sky through professional-grade telescopes and learn more about what they are seeing from experienced volunteers.

Those who own telescopes are encouraged to bring them along. Members of the New Hampshire Astronomical Society will be available to help properly calibrate equipment and answer questions, making this a wonderful opportunity for both experienced stargazers and beginners.

Because clear skies are essential for viewing, a rain or cloudy weather date has been scheduled for Thursday, August 20, at 8 pm. Participants are encouraged to dress warmly, as temperatures can cool quickly after sunset, and to bring a flashlight for walking around the field.

Following the story, she will lead a fun discussion about dirt, bugs, and outdoor exploration before guiding children through a hands-on craft where they will create their own imaginative “bug jars.”

Yester year Coming Home to Old Home Day

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Old Home Day is a summer tradition that was created to bring transplants back to their hometown. As country towns dwindled in population, the hope was that maybe former residents would find their childhood home so beloved they might decide to stay.

Small towns in New Hampshire lost a great deal of their population and property that had once flourished with busy farms and agriculture. During the late 1800s, many family farms and homes in New Hampshire were falling vacant.

According to Tom Curran in his over-

In some cases, the idea of luring former residents back to their hometown was successful. At other times, people saw Old Home Day simply as a way to travel back to visit family and see the place where they grew up. They could socialize for a few days, enjoying music, picnics, and parades before returning to their homes elsewhere.

Whatever the reason, Old Home Days are still held in many Lakes Re-

gion towns, and they offer a lot of fun and a look back at what held a community together so long ago.

Summer is the most popular time to hold an Old Home Day celebration because the weather is good for outdoor happenings. Tourists abound and swell the number of attendees, contributing to the economic certainty of concerts, church suppers, fair food, and more.

The innocent pleasures of Old Home Day remain. In 1899, Governor Frank Rollins had a new and interesting idea to offset the exodus of New Hampshire residents. The plan urged leaders of New Hampshire towns to invite former residents home. Rollins likely saw that many New Hampshireites were moveat • drink • enjoy ing to the western part of the country in the lakes region when the Gold Rush beckoned. Droves in the lakes region of people heeded the call and moved West where industrial jobs were also waiting.

Rollins wrote, to promote the Old Home Day idea, “The purpose of this festival, inaugurated in New Hampshire in the year 1899 and designated ‘Old Home Week’, was to win back, if possible, some of the wealth which

the State, with its New England neighbors, had lavished on the newer parts of the country in the persons of sturdy, resourceful men and women.”

The original Old Home Week Association began in 1899, and the idea was popular, with around 45 towns in New Hampshire taking part. Originally, the date for the event was suggested as the last week of August.

Gilford adopted the annual gathering to celebrate community identity, local history, and the end of summer with parades, family reunions, and historical demonstrations.

In 1897, Governor Rollins wrote, “I wish that in the ear of every son and daughter of New Hampshire, in the summer days, might be heard the persuasive words: ‘Come back, come back! Do you not hear the call? What has become of the old home where you were born? Do you not remember it?

Gilford got in on the celebrations by 1919. Originally, Old Home Days were held on a Thursday, and Gilford kept to that tradition. Farmers came in buggies, wagons, and buckboards to be part of Old Home Day. “The Gunstock Parish: A History of Gilford, New Hampshire” by Adair D. Mulligan, outlines that the town had an Old Home Day Association.

Townspeople were encouraged to step forward to run the event, and the local Grange was chosen as the leader of the festivities. The Grange Hall and the area in front of the building were the headquarters. A rousing baseball game in Gilford started the day, followed by relay races and games in a field. A jolly part of the day was a greased pig contest and climbing of a greased pole.

Other Gilford happenings were a baked bean dinner, which was enjoyed by many. Other families brought their own food and spread out for a picnic in a pine grove. A speaker at the town hall started the afternoon, and the Grange held a minstrel show, a dance or comedy show.

By the 1930s, a parade was added and made its way through the Gilford village area. The parade and the over-

The Gilford Community Church on Potter Hill Rd. is the site of a fair with a big silent auction, children’s games, food, a white elephant sale, and more on Aug. 28 and 29. There will also be a popular magic show.

Bristol, in the Newfound Lake area, held an Old Home Week in 1899.

Like other towns in the Lakes Region, Bristol’s event included a ball game, supper, and band concert. Businesses pitched in and became involved, and all the events drew visitors from around the area and beyond. According to “History of Bristol 1819 – 1969 A Sketch” by Charles E. Greenwood, the town was “gaily decorated in red, white and blue, which added much to the occasion.” Over time, Old Home Day in Bristol ceased, but the event has come back again each August. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 29.

Many Lakes Region towns have taken part in Old Home Day celebrations over the years. It seems the event is especially embraced by small towns where the relocation of people and their return was looked upon with gratitude and excitement.

Surely if Governor Rollins could see that his idea of an Old Home Day remains these many years later, he would be happy, especially when he might see families join together, heeding the call to “come back!”

Exploring the Life of a Country Doctor at the Remick Museum

Story & Photos by Kathi Caldwell-Hopper If you did not know the Doctors Remick—and it is unlikely you did, given they died many years ago—you can still get to know them through the place they lived and worked. Further, you can step back in time and experience a notable slice of small-town Americana at the Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm.

Dr. Edwin Remick (1866–1935) and his son, Dr. Edwin C. Remick (1903– 1993), aka “Doc”, lived in Tamworth on the family farm and served the community for most of their adult lives.

A visit to the Remick Museum, located at 58 Cleveland Hill Rd. in Tamworth, tells the story of the father and son doctors and life in their time through words, artifacts, and buildings.

For the best introduction to the life of a country doctor in the early 1900s, take a guided tour or simply browse the exhibits on your own.

Your visit begins in the museum store, where a Remick staff member will greet you before you begin a tour or gather information on what you will see during the visit.

If you are taking a program or tour, a modest fee is charged, or simply walk through and browse the exhibits for free (donations gratefully accepted).

On a self-guided tour, you will see first-floor exhibits with a timeline of the Remick family. Old photos line the walls and draw the viewer into the era of the Doctors Remick.

to Tamworth to serve the community as their doctor. In 1904, Edwin and his wife, Emily Crafts Remick (18611911), moved into the Captain Enoch Remick House (on the National Register of Historic Places), which is named after Dr. Remick’s great-uncle, who lived there in the mid-19th century.

Dr. Remick lived on the second floor of the house with his wife and son, Edwin C., while his medical office and pharmacy were located on the ground floor. Emily died quite young, leaving behind a grieving husband and small son, Edwin C. Remick. The young boy was raised by his father, with the help of a nurse who lived on the property.

Edwin C. Crafts Remick attended Tufts College Medical School and graduated in 1929. He married Marion Ella Miles (1906–1980) and returned to Tamworth to join his father’s practice. The two doctors worked together until the elder doctor’s death in 1935.

Says Remick Museum program manager James Cruickshank, “We refer to the younger Doctor Remick as Edwin C. or Doc, which makes it easier to distinguish him from his father. When Edwin C. graduated and married, his father bought him a home next door to the farm as a wedding/graduation gift. The doctors worked together and tended to the sick. Edwin C. was wellversed in the medical needs of the Tamworth area, having grown up in the town.

As you move through the exhibit buildings, various rooms show the equipment used to treat patients, and you can imagine the daily life of a country doctor who braved all kinds of weather to make house calls. The Doctors Remick delivered babies, utilized their offices when needed as an emergency room, called upon the sick all over the area, and held office hours.

In the old-fashioned triage room, a dentist’s chair is on display. James explains that in a rural town at that time, dentists were scarce, so Dr. Remick acted as the dentist as well as the town’s doctor. Small tables displaying medical equipment may seem antiquated by today’s standards, but these objects were typical in their day.

Patients sat in a modest-sized waiting room until it was their turn to see the doctor. The chairs were situated close together, and there was likely little privacy. A handwritten sign on the door informed that the office hours were 9 am to noon and 7:30 to 9 pm, by appointment only. That detail adds to the sense of the doctor’s busy routine.

The medical treatment rooms are fascinating, and one room contains the doctor’s desk and medical equipment.

Forgotten Souls: The Search for the Lost Tuskegee Airmen, Lecture On Tuesday, August 18, the Wright Museum will welcome Cheryl Thomas. This is the thirteenth program of the Wright Museum’s 2026 Education Series.

Forgotten Souls examines the lives of the 27 pilots who went missing while battling the enemy abroad – and honors their lives, their sacrifices, and their legacy. This book serves as long overdue closure for the pilots who gave their lives.

Cheryl Thompson is an award -winning investigative correspondent for National Public Radio, and an associate professor of journalism at George Washington University.

In a large room in the doctor’s offices was the apothecary. Unlike a modern pharmacy, it was a place where the doctors made up their own medicines.

The shelves are lined with large bottles and medicines that are little used in the modern-day world, but in their time, they were part of a typical medical regime.

Throughout the exhibits and displays are letters from former patients, thanking the doctors for their care. These letters provide a touching reminder of the high esteem locals had for the doctors and how Edwin and Edwin C. dedicated their lives’ work to healing.

Edwin C. also turned to farming and ran a successful dairy business. One reason for keeping cows was to provide milk for the Civilian Conservation Corps working in the area. That choice also connected the farm to the needs of the community.

Says Dawne Gilpatrick, marketing coordinator at the Remick Museum, “Dr. Edwin C. had a pasteurization machine and also a milk delivery service.

Four or five laborers lived on the property to work on the farm.”

Edwin C. embraced horse racing and dairy farming. According to information at www.remickmuseum.org, “Holsteins and horses were beloved by Dr. Remick. This is most evident in the collections of ‘Doc’ C. Remick and his personal history with dairy farming and harness racing.” The museum uses this history to show another side of Edwin C.’s life.

Doc’s wife, Marion, was interested in harness racing as well. The equipment used for the races and caring for the horses is on display in a barn, and it gives a glimpse of how diverse the Remicks were in their interests.

A glimpse into the rooms where Edwin C. and Marion lived is a charming

part of the tour. Each room is decorated as it was in their time, with a kitchen full of cooking equipment that Marion probably used daily.

Other rooms, such as a bedroom and a living room, show how the Remicks lived in a modest but comfortable way.

The den in the apartment is especially charming, where Edwin C. and Marion shared their passion for horse racing.

The walls are covered with framed pictures of horses, and easy chairs offered a cozy place where the doctor and his wife could sit, relax, and discuss horses and racing. Together, these rooms round out the portrait of their home life.

There is so much to see at the museum that the visitor should allow time to stop, browse, read information, and soak in what life was like for a country doctor in a small town many years ago.

The Doctors Remick were tireless in their work and are remembered as two of the most respected men in Tamworth. From working every day to heal the sick to running a successful dairy farm, to the horse racing hobby, they gave much back to the community.

Their legacy carries naturally into the museum visit.

Plan to spend time at the museum and get to know the Remick family, their staff, and the nurses who helped run their practice. It is strongly advised to register for a tour, and you can choose from Medical History Tours at the Enoch Remick House, Historic Mural Art Tour, Doc’s Dairy & Harness Horse History Tour, and, in the autumn, the Fall Maple Tour and Haunted History with the Drs. Remick.

Makers Mill in Wolfeboro is Looking for New Volunteers Makers Mill has recently received a grant from Volunteer NH to strengthen volunteer recruitment and outreach efforts, helping the makerspace connect more community members with meaningful opportunities to share their time, talents, and passions.

While many people know Makers Mill as a place to learn woodworking, sewing, welding, 3D printing, and other creative skills, the organization says its greatest resource is its volunteers and volunteer community.

“Volunteers are the heartbeat of Makers Mill,” said Executive Director Josh Arnold. “They don’t just help keep the doors open—they create the welcoming, collaborative culture that makes this place special. Whether someone enjoys talking with people, organizing a workspace, or sharing a specialized craft, there’s a place for them here.”

With support from Volunteer NH, Makers Mill is expanding its volunteer program and inviting community members to become part of a growing network of people who enjoy making a difference while building friendships and learning new skills.

Ring With a Bezel Set Stone with Joy Raskin Join us at the League of NH Craftsmen – Meredith Fine Craft Gallery on Saturday, August 22, from 10:30 am – 4:30 pm for a Silver Ring with a Bezel Class with juried artist Joy Raskin.

In this one-day workshop, students will make a silver ring band out of wire or sheet metal, and then they will make a bezel to set a cabochon stone. The bezel will then be soldered to the ring, a cabochon stone will be set, and the finished ring will be polished and ready for you to wear and enjoy. Materials are not required, but students can bring in a favorite stone or any silver they may have. The instructor will supply silver wire and sheet, plus cabochon stones of assorted sizes for students to purchase. The estimated cost of materials ranges from $40 to $90, depending on the cost of materials you use.

Tuition is $75 per student. The materials fee is between $40-$90

depending on the stones and the amount of silver the student uses.

The materials fee will be paid in cash or check to the instructor on the day of class.

Space is limited, and pre-registration is required.

Those who wish to take the class MUST sign up by Wednesday, August 19.
