Listening to the Bees at McCormack’s Farm

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Photos courtesy McCormack’s Farm Honeybees changed Jeff McCormack’s life. While he had a great life before becoming a beekeeper, learning more about honeybees led him down a different path.

Before becoming the owner, with his wife, Karen, of McCormack’s Farm at 679 Province Road in Gilmanton, Jeff had been curious about honeybees.

“I got involved on a whim,” he recalls. “I mentioned to my Dad that I was curious about bees, and so he gifted me a package of honeybees for my birthday in 2012. I was admittedly very inexperienced, and I didn’t know any beekeepers in New Hampshire that I could turn to for help.”

As his interest grew, Jeff found several beekeeping clubs in the state and began attending a few meetings. Jeff credits beekeeper Ben Chadwick of Alton, New Hampshire, as a true mentor who nurtured and encouraged him to keep going.

Jeff says he got a few hives from Ben and learned that it is best, when starting out, to have two hives going at once.

That allows you to compare and learn from the hives; the first three winters, Jeff recalls with regret, his hives failed.

To underscore his growth and expertise as a beekeeper, Jeff says that now, these years later, he keeps winter losses to a minimum.

Jeff explains that, among other things, you have to make sure they have plenty of surplus food stored, and if necessary, keep the bees fed, to care for them in the winter. He adds that bees are semi-dormant in the coldweather season, but on a nice, warm winter’s day, they will occasionally fly

Just because the summer is over does not mean a beekeeper’s work is done; Jeff says it is his full-time, year-round job to care for the bees.

Running the honeybee business full-time was, as Jeff stresses, a big leap from his former job as a project manager for a cell tower company. He always knew that, when the time was right, he wanted to step into the world of running his own business, but he had no idea it would be as a beekeeper and owner of a beekeeping supply store.

“I wanted to eventually become an agricultural business, growing vegetables or something similar. But I had no idea being self-employed would mean running a bee business!” he laughs.

A large, open space at McCormack’s Farm houses many beekeeping products Jeff uses in his daily work. It is also a store where other beekeepers can get products to maintain their apiaries year-round, mostly in spring and summer. “I like to help people get started in beekeeping and answer their questions,” Jeff says. “As a supplier, I sell such things as beekeeping starter kits, bee packages, hive kits, frames, and much more.” Along with all this, Jeff and Karen sell their own wildflower honey, beeswax, and beeswax candles.

To get honey from their hives, Jeff

has an extractor room that is kept warm because honey is more viscous at higher temperatures. A machine extracts the product, and it is all local wildflower honey.

In addition to honey extraction, Jeff works daily to care for the bees and check the hives. He explains, “I visit and inspect the hives seven days a week, during swarm season, to keep up with the colonies. I have about 300 colonies on local farms, and those farms benefit from the pollination provided by the bees. I must go around and check the hives to make sure wildlife, such as bears, have not gotten into a hive and knocked it over.”

Bees are known to travel over three miles for flowers to extract the nectar; Jeff’s neighbors have great fields full of flowers, and they are happy to leave the plants intact rather than cutting them in the summer. Thus, the bees have an easy, nearby source of nectar.

(Jeff says clover is an excellent source of nectar for honeybees.)

While things quiet down somewhat in the winter, Jeff and Karen are still plenty busy. Karen handles all the paperwork for McCormack’s Farm, which includes ordering supplies, and she also bottles all the honey and makes deliveries to places that sell their products.

• Bees continued from page 3 time. He does a teaching segment on beekeeping equipment, and diseases and pests that impact honeybees. It also offers an opportunity to talk with beekeepers and pre-sell what he will be offering for bee supplies in the coming season.

There is a belief among many laymen that bees have a certain mystical, magical quality and that they can communicate if we listen. Jeff is not so sure about that, but he acknowledges that honeybees are very interesting creatures of which not a lot is really known.

He explains in-depth the lifecycle of a queen bee, and it is quite a complex system, leaving one to believe the hive works as a team in an efficient manner.

“There are three types of honeybees in a hive,” says Jeff. “There are drones, which are the males; worker bees, which are the females, and a queen bee. When a queen bee lays eggs, fertilized eggs develop into worker bees (females), while unfertilized eggs develop into drones.”

If something were to happen to the queen, the worker bees take a fertilized egg, feed it, and turn it into a queen to take her place. It takes an egg 16 days to develop through its stages to emerge as a queen.

One thing Jeff does know for sure

is that honeybees were originally not native to this country but came from Europe. However, there are now some bees native to this country.

The life cycle, communication methods, and ability to work as a team are what fascinate Jeff about the typical honeybee colony. There is a lot we can learn from honeybees, and that is part of what draws Jeff to keep learning as he surrounds himself with them every day.

Honeybees certainly changed Jeff’s life in big ways. He works every day among living creatures, he greatly enjoys and finds fulfillment in the fascinating work of beekeeping. Jeff likes to share and teach what he knows with anyone who asks, and he relishes encouraging others to become beekeepers. It is one of the things he most loves about his job.

Compaq Big Band Hits Wolfeboro Community Bandstand on Saturday The sounds of the Big Band Era will emanate from the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand on Saturday, Aug. 8, as the Compaq Big Band makes its return to town to bring to a close the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand summer concert series.

The Compaq Big Band got its start as the DEC Big Band, formed in 1975 as one of the many employee clubs at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) in Massachusetts. At that time, DEC was establishing itself as the premier company in the minicomputer industry and was one of the largest employers in New England.

The company provided a small amount of startup funds for music, stands, and uniforms, and employees from all sorts of positions at DEC came together for practices each week and performed for free, at first at DEC corporate functions, then at community outdoor concerts and benefit dance events in the region.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the band, like Digital, experienced a membership turnover, and as downsizing hit the company, it became clear that the band would need to complement its Digital employee ranks with local area musicians, and with fewer Digital-sponsored functions, the band’s reach moved toward Worcester and southern New Hampshire.

When DEC was absorbed into Compaq in 1998, the band continued to present a positive image of the company by

providing high-quality, affordable big band music to the New England community, and in 2000, the band became the Compaq Big Band.

Compaq was acquired by Hewlett-Packard and received support from the company in the form of a weekly rehearsal venue and storage space for equipment, but in 2008, the band stopped receiving that support from the company and is no longer affiliated with HP. However, several current band members are DEC, Compaq, or HP alumni who maintain a connection to the company tradition and culture, and the band is rounded out by various area musicians who embrace the band’s non-profit operating philosophy.

The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand concerts take place each Saturday night in July and August, weather permitting, in the bandstand, located in Cate Park in downtown Wolfeboro on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee.

If the weather should cause the concert to be cancelled, signs will be posted at the entrance to Cate Park, and a notice will be posted on the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand Facebook page.

The concerts will begin at 7 pm and run for two hours, with a short intermission, at which time a pass-thebucket offering will be held to support the free concert series.

In a bold departure from tradition, Kingswood Theater is thrilled to announce its inaugural adult musical production: The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals. Featuring an electrifying book and score by Starkid Productions, this genre-bending experience takes the stage Friday, August 14, and Saturday, August 15, at 7 pm, with a final matinee on Sunday, August 16, at 2 pm.

Performances will be held at the prestigious Kingswood Arts Center. Audiences are advised that this production features mature content and language.

Renowned as StarKid’s most notorious and beloved work, The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals is a high-octane horror-comedy that subverts every trope of musical theater. With sharp music and lyrics by Jeff Blim and a witty book by Matt and Nick Lang, the show serves as the explosive first installment in the Hatchetfield series.

Inspired by the tension of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the story follows Paul (Adrian Champagne), a quintessential “average guy” who detests musicals. His worst nightmare comes to life when his town is seized by an alien hive mind, forcing the citizens into elaborate, mandatory song-and-dance numbers.

“What began as an alumni summer project rapidly evolved into a professional-grade showcase for our entire

local adult community,” says co-director Scott Giessler. “This is a rare opportunity for us to push artistic boundaries and explore edgy, sophisticated content that creates a truly unique experience for the Kingswood Arts Center stage.”

Co-Director Kathleen Hill echoes the excitement: “This cast is a powerhouse. Their camaraderie and raw enthusiasm have been palpable since day one; they truly embody the heart and soul of musical theater.” Cast member Melanie Fedorowicz, who stars as Charlotte, adds, “This show is an absolute riot. Hidden Hazards in Historic Heirlooms? State Police Bomb Squad to Speak at Lake Winni Museum On Wednesday, August 5 at 7 pm, the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum will host Trooper Neil Chapdelaine of the New Hampshire State Police Bomb Squad for an information session on the identification of potentially dangerous explosive objects. Since seating is limited, reservations are requested by e-mail to lakewinnipesaukeemuseum@gmail.com or by phone to 603366-5950. This public interest program is free for all attendees.

During this informative session, Trooper Chapdelaine—who also serves as an Explosive Detection K9 Handler—will provide insight into the work of the Bomb Squad and offer practical guidance on what to do if you

encounter an unfamiliar or potentially hazardous item in your home or on your property. This presentation is intended to raise awareness and promote safety, and to help the public better understand the risks and appropriate responses to such objects, particularly as interest in historical artifacts grows during this milestone anniversary year.

This event is especially relevant for anyone who owns or has inherited military memorabilia. As the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States, many families are revisiting heirlooms passed down through generations. Among these treasured items, some may include military souvenirs—objects that, in rare cases,

could still contain explosive materials.

For safety reasons, attendees are strictly advised not to bring any items to the event. Information will be provided during the program on how to properly contact the New Hampshire Bomb Squad if there are questions or concerns about a specific object.

Last October, Trooper Chapdelaine visited the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum and, following an X-ray inspection, removed a live shell from the collection, which had been on display since 2014 as part of a group of Civil War objects donated by the late Edward H. Hutton of Laconia. Chapdelaine reported that he has inspected ordnance at other NH Heritage Museum Trail

members, including the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro, and recommends that historical collections exercise caution and feel free to contact the State Police Bomb Squad.

The Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society was founded in 1985 with the mission to promote and preserve the history and heritage of the Big Lake and its vicinity. Programs focusing on the Lakes Region and New Hampshire history are held on Wednesdays during the summer season. Located at 503 Endicott Street North, next to Funspot in the Weirs, the Lake Winni Museum is open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm through mid-October.

Mount Washington’s Cog Railway

native of Campton. Marsh came up with the idea while climbing Mount Washington in 1852. Upon completion, the railway was soon labeled “Railway to the Moon”. Marsh developed a prototype locomotive and a short demonstration section of track, then found investors to form the Mount Washington Railway Company during the spring of 1866. The Cog’s first paying

customers began on August 14, 1868, but it wasn’t until July of 1869 that construction reached the summit. The earliest locomotives are represented today by the restored display locomotive, #1 Old Peppersass. In August 1869, President Ulysses S. Grant visited New England to escape the summer heat in Washington, D.C. During his tour, he was the first president to ride the rail-

way to the top of Mount Washington.

Only the Pilatus Railway in Switzerland is steeper than Marsh’s innovation. Today, the cog railway ascends Mount Washington’s western slope for three miles, beginning at an elevation of approximately 2,700 feet above sea level and ending within yards of the mountain’s summit. The steam locomotive takes approximately 65 minutes to ascend and 40 minutes to descend, while the biodiesel engines can go up in as little as 36 minutes.

After Sylvester Marsh died in 1884, control of the Cog passed to the Concord & Montreal Railroad, which ran it until 1889, when the Boston & Maine Railroad took over. From 1868 to 1910, the locomotives were fired with wood.

In 1910, the railway converted to coal for all of its locomotives.

From 1986 to 2017, the Cog Railway was controlled and owned by Wayne Presby and Joel Bedor of Littleton.

By Mark Okrant Situated in New Hampshire’s Presidential Range, Mount Washington is the highest mountain in the northeastern United States, at 6288 feet. On a clear day, visitors can see parts of five U.S. states from its summit: New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, and New York. On an exceptionally clear day, it is also possible to see into the Canadian province of Quebec and view the Atlantic Ocean. Each year, an estimated 250 to 300 thousand people travel to the summit, either by means of the Mount Washington Auto Road or the Mount Washington Cog Railway. A smaller number hikes to the top.

The Cog Railway, also known as The Cog, has taken more than five million people to the summit during its existence. It is the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway, ascending Mount Washington on a track system and using both steam and biodiesel-powered locomotives to carry visitors to its top.

The Great Recession and the 2000s energy crisis led to fewer passengers, and the Cog sought to cut costs by only using diesel, which could make three round trips for the cost of one steam train round trip. From November through early May, the Mt. Washington Cog Railway does not run to the summit. Instead, the winter destination is Waumbek Station at 4000 feet of elevation.

In April 2017, the Bedor family sold its interest in the railway to Wayne Presby, the only remaining member of the group who had purchased the railway in 1983. Presby assumed direct management control of the railway in December 2017. In 2021, the railway completed two of the largest improvement projects in its history. The

existing rail was replaced with 100 pounds-per-linear-yard rail and a new 34,000 square feet maintenance facility. The new facility enabled the railway to resume winter operations in 2020.

The cog railway designs and builds all its locomotives and passenger coaches at the company shops located at the base of Mount Washington. Each train consists of a locomotive pushing a single passenger car up the mountain, descending the mountain by going in reverse. Each locomotive and car was originally equipped with a ratchet and pawl mechanism engaged during the climb to prevent any rollback. During descent, both locomotive and car are braked.

In 2004, work was completed to replace the lower Waumbek Switch and Siding with an 1,800-foot passing loop equipped with electric and hydraulically powered automated switches. These switches are powered by batteries and recharged by solar panels. One switch

is located at each end of the loop, allowing ascending and descending trains to pass one another. In 2008, work began on the first diesel locomotive to be powered with biodiesel. By 2019, the railway completed the construction of seven of these locomotives. In 2014, work began on another switch and siding at the summit of Mount Washington, to allow trains to pass one another at the summit of the mountain. The Cog Railway track crosses over three hiking trails, including the Gulfside Trail, which is part of the Appalachian Trail. Some hikers have been known to wait for the next train to expose their buttocks to the passengers—a practice known as “Mooning the Cog”.

The steam locomotives on the railway generate large amounts of smoke, nicknamed “Cog Smog.” The railway is exempted from the state’s air-pollution-control law (RSA 125-C:20). In 2008, the railway introduced the first diesel locomotive that was designed and built by the railroad staff itself.

Since 2008, four more diesels were completed, thereby reducing the visual pollution caused by the coal-fired steam locomotives. This action has increased the length of time that pas-

sengers aboard the company’s eight coaches can spend at the summit. Each coach has a capacity of 70 riders.

The Cog Railway is always seeking ways to upgrade. According to the Director of Marketing, Rob Arey, “One of the biggest areas of transformation has been our on-site maintenance shop.”

All advanced fabrication is conducted in-house—including robotic welding, CNC plasma cutting, and other technologies that allow The Cog to build most components themselves.

Arey told us that their most exciting current project is developing an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) in partnership with UNH’s Engineering Department. “We’re hoping it will serve as a proving ground for eventually transitioning our biodiesel fleet to electric.” Meanwhile, the company is refurbishing its steam fleet to preserve that historic experience.

Yester year The Hurricane of 1938: A Day No One Forgot

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper If you lived through the Hurricane of 1938, you never forgot it. High winds, flooding, loss of home, and, in some cases, the lives of family and neighbors etched it into your memory for life.

The Lakes Region has known beautiful, sunny summer and autumn weather year after year, and violent storms are few. Now and then, after a heat wave, an intense, brief microburst or thunder-

storm will rip through an area, but such occurrences are rare. When they do occur, we have some warning thanks to sophisticated weather-tracking and reporting methods.

But on September 21 of 1938, there was no such advanced way of warning the public of a battering storm on its way. Indeed, most weather stations did not see it coming and could not predict the hurricane’s intensity, and the storm

raced through New England, flattening buildings and upending lives.

The Bristol Enterprise, like most newspapers in towns and cities, reported on the damage. The September 22, 1938, front page headline informed readers “Big Storm – Bristol Marooned.”

The story went on to report that six inches of rain had fallen and that numerous roads in the area were impassable. By noon on September 21, the storm had rendered all highways into Bristol cut off, so there was no means of escape. (Even if there had been a way out, there was no place to go to avoid the hurricane.) The best people could do was hunker down in their basement or an interior room of their home and hope for the best.

Within the September 22 issue, readers were given more bad news when a story reported: “Hurricane Follows Flood.” The wind velocity was measured at between 88 and 100 miles per hour in Bristol, with thousands of trees uprooted, buildings destroyed, and the Newfound Lake area getting “the full force of the blow.”

In towns all over the Lakes Region and New England, the story was much the same, with a massive number of trees uprooted and fallen. This timber damage would have a significant impact everywhere as people, still in shock, began cleaning up the mess left by the hurricane.

But what caused such an intense storm, and why were people so unprepared? According to the National Weather Service at www.weather.gov, the answers to these questions indi-

cate that in 1938, the Service was very different from what it is today. It was called the U.S. Weather Bureau, and numerous smaller offices across the country were gradually added.

At that time, the Jacksonville, FL, Weather Bureau office issued hurricane information and gale warnings extending northward to Cape Hatteras.

Thereafter, the Hurricane Center in Washington, D.C. issued the warnings and information along the coast of Maine. The office in 1938 was located in the Whitehall Building in Battery Place in downtown Manhattan. Also, when the Weather Bureau issued gale and storm warnings, they indicated what direction the wind was coming from. When you see “northeast storm warnings,” that means the wind will be coming out of the northeast.

On September 18, rain was falling heavily, and the center of a hurricane was in Puerto Rico. By the following day, hurricane warnings were issued for areas of Florida.

Although the rain was heavy, New Englanders had little concern about a hurricane. One key factor in the unawareness of the storm’s strength was that the Jacksonville weather office told fishermen and other boaters to stay off the waters; thus, there were hardly any reports of the hurricane’s power and location.

What were most Lakes Regioners doing at the time? Probably going about their business, wearing raincoats and galoshes as they went to work, but

On September 21, as the day progressed, the Washington weather office issued storm warnings north of Atlantic City and south of Block Island and southeast storm warnings from Block Island to Eastport, Maine. At that time, the coming hurricane was called a tropical storm and had its center a distance from Cape Hatteras. In actuality, the storm was bigger and stronger than anyone thought.

As the storm ripped up the New England coast and heavily impacted New York, people began to take notice.

Homes in Connecticut seacoast towns were flooded or washed out to sea, and the winds were fierce. As evening approached, the storm continued up the coast, and its power was causing concern. By 6 pm, it reached Vermont and into New England, causing damage and loss of homes.

Perhaps if Meredith’s Dudley Leavitt had been alive for the 1938 hurricane, there would have been some warning in advance. Dudley (1772 – 1851) was a well-known, energetic man who served as a teacher, astronomer, farmer, and editor/writer for Leavitt’s Farmer’s Almanac. One of his tasks for the journal was to determine, by calculation, the time when the sun would rise or set on any day of the year. He also determined what the weather would be, the moon’s phases, and important tidal calculations. His writings and weather

forecasts were eagerly awaited by local farmers who swore by Dudley’s prognostications. Maybe he would have foretold, through his detailed studies, where and when such intense storms as the hurricane would happen?

Other storms of lesser intensity, yet quite devastating, have hit the Lakes Region at times over the years. According to “Bear Island Reflections” by the Bear Island Conservation Association, storms can occur in any season on the lake. One such storm, in October of 1841, saw the first steamboat caught in a northwest squall. The Belknap, a popular steamer, went to the bottom of Lake Winnipesaukee. Thus, operators of boats on the lake learned to always keep a “weather eye” out when the skies became dark and the winds picked up.

Another story in “Bear Island Reflections” tells of wind and rain that were off in the distance but charged down the lake. Moses Warren was the pilot of the Mount Washington, and the big boat began to bury its bow under each wave. The captain and his crew immediately saw that this was much more than a passing shower. After weighing the options of what to do, Warren decided to turn the boat and ride with the wind. Unfortunately, the boat tipped onto its side as water filled the deck. In the middle of the violent storm, a big wave and wind swept away part of the port wheelhouse. With skill, however, the crew met the danger and held until the storm blew itself out.

With its lake exposure, Bear Island

was among many that suffered the devastation of the Hurricane of 1938.

Summer residents had long gone home, which was fortunate because being stuck on an island in the brute winds and rain would have been life-threatening. The heavy rain softened the ground, and it upended the trees. The roots of the big trees were damaged, and trees fell everywhere on Bear Island. Areas such as Camp Passaconaway lay in ruins. One family still on the island rode out the storm in an ice house, worried that their residential home would be destroyed.

More hurricanes tore up the land in

the Lakes Region, such as Hurricane Carol, which struck in 1954. It caused extensive damage and was called the most powerful hurricane since the 1938 disaster. Carol did much damage to the area, and tore across Lake Winnipesaukee, taking a toll on the exposed islands.

If you lived through the Hurricane of 1938, you never forgot it. But the winds eventually died down, and Lakes Regioners enjoyed a return to sunny skies and a calm Lake Winnipesaukee. Philosophically, people knew that the sun would always return and they would rebuild.

Allen Wayside Furniture to Host “Fill A Truck” Pet Food & Supply Drive On Saturday, August 22, community members will have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of local pets and the families who love them during the “Fill A Truck Pet Food & Supply Drive” at Allen Wayside Furniture, located at 636 Center Street in Wolfeboro. Meet Author Ana Hebra Flaster Ana Hebra Flaster, author of the memoir Property of the Revolution, will visit the Meredith Public Library on Thursday, August 6, at 6 pm. Ana will share a presentation to accompany her book. She will also answer questions and sign copies of the book, which can be purchased ahead of time from Innisfree Bookshop or purchased during the author event.

Ana was six years old when her working-class family was kicked out of their Havana barrio for opposing communism. Once devoted revolutionaries themselves but disillusioned by the Castro government’s repressive tactics, they fled to the US. The permanent losses they suffered - of home, country, and loved ones, all within forty-eight hours - haunted her multi-generational family as they reclaimed their lives and freedom in 1967 New Hampshire.

There, they fed each other stories of their scrappy barrio - some of which Hebra Flaster has shared on All Things Considered - to resurrect their lost world and fortify themselves for a daunting task: building a new life in a foreign land.

Ana Hebra Flaster has written about Cuba and the Cuban American experience for national print and online media, including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Boston Globe.

Her commentaries and storytelling have aired on NPR and PBS’s Stories from the Stage. Ana writes about the ongoing struggle for freedom and human rights in Cuba in her popular Substack, CubaCurious. After almost forty years in the Boston area, she recently moved back to southern New Hampshire with her husband, Andy, and their Havanese pups, Luna and Beny Moré.

Doll Carriage, Bike, & Pet Parade to Debut for Tuftonboro Old Home Days A new family-friendly tradition will make its debut during Tuftonboro Old Home Days on Saturday, August 22, as children are invited to participate in the first-ever Doll Carriage, Bike, and Pet Parade. Beginning at 9 am, the parade will showcase the creativity of children ages 12 and under as they decorate doll carriages, bicycles, and even their favorite pets in this year’s patriotic red, white, and blue theme.

Participants should gather at the Tuftonboro Town Office parking lot by 8:45 am to line up before the parade steps off for its route to Spider Web Gardens. Children under the age of 6 are welcome to participate but must be accompanied by an adult throughout the parade. No registration is required—families are encouraged to simply arrive with their decorated carriage, bike, or pet, ready to join the fun.

Every young participant will receive enthusiastic cheers from the crowd, a certificate of participation, and a coupon for a complimentary small ice cream from Pier 19.

The celebration continues immediately following the parade with an ‘Ice Cream and Cookies for Breakfast Social’, hosted by Spider Web Gardens at its new Gazebo Garden venue. Summer Craft Fair in Union Set for August 8 On Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 9 am to 3 pm, over 20 crafters will present their best wares at a Summer Craft Fair at the Union Congregational Church chapel, across the street in the Hotchkiss Commons-Reunion Grange Hall, and all around the church property.

Need some home-made goodies for your next cookout? How about sewn or quilted items – winter is coming!

Jewelry for yourself or for gifts? How about woodcrafts, wreaths, photographic items, and candles? All will be available for purchase. Also, many beautiful items have been donated by the crafters for you to take a chance on winning. And, if all that shopping makes you hungry, a snack bar will be

available with sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, and drinks for sale.

The historic Church and Commons are located at 80 and 71Main Street (State Route 153) in the village of Union in the town of Wakefield, just off Route 16. In conjunction with Wakefield Heritage Days being held in Union that day, the church will be open for viewing. Both buildings are handicapped accessible.

Seasonal Cruise with a Naturalist Returns for Exploration on Squam Lake One of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center’s most immersive educational experiences has returned. Cruise with a Naturalist is once again taking visitors onto Squam Lake, offering a chance to explore one of New Hampshire’s beautiful landscapes and wildlife.

More than a sightseeing tour, Cruise with a Naturalist gives guests the chance to experience Squam Lake through the perspective of a naturalist. Each cruise will take visitors through quiet coves and around forested islands in search of Common Loons, Bald Eagles, and other native wildlife while uncovering the lake’s rich ecology, natural history, and conservation story.

Because no two cruises follow the same route, every trip offers new wildlife encounters and discoveries.

The Science Center also continues its seasonal Loon Cruise through August 21. Recently featured on New Hampshire Chronicle’s July 13 broadcast, the Loon Cruise offers visitors the opportunity to experience Squam Lake alongside a Science Center naturalist and a bi-

ologist from the Loon Preservation Committee while learning about Common Loon biology, monitoring, and conservation.

Routes are selected to maximize opportunities for loon observations, and a portion of the proceeds supports the Loon Preservation Committee’s conservation work throughout New Hampshire.

In addition to these specialty cruises, guests can also enjoy the daily Discover Squam Cruise, a guided tour highlighting the lake’s natural history and cultural stories, including connections to the filming location of On Golden Pond.

Visitors may also have the chance to spot wildlife, including Common Loons and Bald Eagles, while learning about the people who have lived along Squam Lake’s shores.

All Squam Lakes Cruises are approximately 90 minutes long aboard covered pontoon boats designed for comfortable wildlife viewing.
