A Cleaning Experience at Wolfeboro Executive Car Wash

By Barbara Neville Wilson There was a time when each home chore was assigned a day of the week: Wash on Monday, Iron on Tuesday, Mend on Wednesday, Churn on Thursday, Clean on Friday, Bake on Saturday, Rest on Sunday.

No time was allotted to take care of our “other” homes: our cars, our trucks, our boats, so I asked Andrew Swenson, owner of Wolfeboro Carwash and Executive Detail, if cleaning vehicles is really important, or is it just a matter of pride?

Although polite, Andrew’s reply is firm. “Regular cleaning and detailing is not just for looks. It actually gives longer life to a vehicle’s surfaces,” he says.

When Andrew bought the Wolfeboro Car Wash in 2008, he learned to care for the automated machinery and the “do’s” and “don’ts” of washing, but as he settled into the community, he found there was demand for detailing services, too.

Not content to be “just another detailing guy,” he did his research and discovered if he wanted to do the best work, he needed the best training, and that, he felt, would come from Renny Doyle, renowned as a detailer’s detailer.

Andrew applied and was accepted in Renny’s intense two-week, one-on-one training offered to only 26 students a year. After the course, Renny invited him to join other top students in his “Detail Mafia,” a network of professionals dedicated to topnotch

Returning to Wolfeboro, Andrew was ready to offer detail services to owners of boats, trucks, classic cars and daily drivers, too. Now nearly eight years in, he has become so busy that in 2015 he built a shop dedicated to detailing across from the Wolfeboro Car Wash, behind Dunkin Donuts on Pine Street in Wolfeboro.

Between the automated car wash, wash-it-yourself bay and the detailing shop, Andrew offers one-stop convenience for clean vehicle needs, but what does “clean” really mean?

“Clean,” Andrew says, “is a definition in the eye of the beholder.” At the very least, he suggests that “clean” means removing elements that are harmful to the long-term preservation of one’s investment.

On the exterior, that means removing

foreign objects of any size that might compromise the finish of the vehicle and providing a barrier to protect the finish from future marring.

On the interior, it means similarly cleaning and protecting hard surfaces and extracting foreign objects from upholstery and rugs.

The first and most important step in car washing is often given little attention or even ignored: thoroughly prewashing the exterior. “Dirt builds up,” Andrew says. At this time of year, our roads are covered in sand and dirt from winter plowing, and Mud Season means dirt roads kick up glop that sticks to any surface it touches.

Whether you hand wash a car, or use an automated car wash, it’s important to prewash the whole vehicle, and especially around the trim and the wheel wells where grit and grime collect. If you don’t, warns Andrew,

sand and other objects will inevitably kick up during the wash phase and be dragged across the paint, scraping it.

Concerned by old tales of machinery scratching paint, some people shy away from automated car washes.

That’s not really a problem today, says Andrew. While old carwashes actually washed with bristled brushes, the “brushes” installed during Wolfeboro Carwash’s 2014 retrofit are actually made of closed cell foam lubricated by dozens of nozzles spraying water while the foam rides across the car. The triple action of pre-wash, foam and water will thoroughly clean winter off most normally maintained vehicles.

If, however, a vehicle has been taken off road in the mud or hasn’t been cleaned in months, more prewashing may be required.

After washing, the next important step in exterior maintenance is protecting the car’s finish. Many people assume that means wax, but Andrew says there are a number of other products that will protect a finish better and longer.

“I really don’t use wax,” Andrew says. “It has a short life, like four to six weeks.” Instead, his shop offers paint sealants. These are synthetic polymers that bond to paint and last longer than wax, some as long as eight to ten months.

At the top end of the protective life span are automotive coatings. They protect against natural elements, like bird droppings and pine pitch—a

Automotive coatings, though, are not generally for the do-it-yourselfer.

Automobile dealerships and shops like Andrew’s have the equipment and expertise to apply it onsite. An advantage to using a shop unaffiliated with a dealership, says Andrew, is its ability to vet the quality of a product independently, rather than being tied to using a product chosen by the superintending brand.

Winter is hard on the interior of your vehicle, too, says Andrew. Salt residue wreaks havoc on rugs and upholstery.

Really, everyone should vacuum his or her cars weekly all year round, but it’s particularly important in winter.

When wet salt and sand build up, they dry like cement and become extremely difficult to remove.

“The wisest investment for the interior of your car is mats,” Andrew says. Recognizing it will sound like a shameless commercial, he presses on, “Everyone should have a mat like the Weather-Tech floor liners” that he sells. They are custom fitted, so no residue can build up in the cracks and affect things like the wiring of the car.

Andrew’s attention to detail and pride of workmanship has won him recognition among local car and boat aficionados, but the recognition doesn’t stop there.

Each year, detailing guru Renny Doyle invites just 30 to 40 detailers to work with him on special projects at the Seattle Museum of Flight in

Washington State.

For the fourth year running, Andrew has been invited to be a Selected Member of the Air Force One Detailing Team. He heads west again the week of April 10 to work on 17 important vintage planes, including the original jet propelled Air Force One, a SAM 970. From 7 am until 5 pm or later, he and other handpicked technicians will correct paint imperfections, revive faded paint and polish metal to mirrored perfection.

“It’s really an honor to be invited,” says Andrew. He looks forward to once again joining teams of other perfectionists, putting expertise and elbow grease together to preserve American history. He mentions, too, how gratifying it is to have local companies recognize the importance of his mission by offsetting costs he will incur. Genuine Local is a state-ofthe-art commercial kitchen owned and operated by Gavin and Mary MacDonald. The couple produces and co-packs locally sourced food products and offers consulting services

from production to branding as well as marketing for self-producers. The public has the opportunity to enjoy some delicious samples and tour the kitchen facilities.

The third building contains an upstairs gallery and design showroom displaying Little’s wrought-iron work and fine furnishings and that of other regional artists. For NH Open Doors weekend, the Arts Collaborative also will host other local artists. Steven Hayden is a wood, metal and ceramic artist from Meredith. April at the Science Center With the arrival of spring, the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness is offering family-related programs.

Signs of Spring takes place Sat., April 16 from 10 to 11:30 am.

Children ages 5 and up are invited to dig into the Center’s new book, 50 Nature Activities for Kids by Senior Naturalist Dave Erler. The book, published in celebration of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center’s 50th anniversary, features activities kids and adults can do to get nearer to nature.

Signs of Spring features activities for the season, including Bird Nesting Materials, Sucking in a Bird, and Visit a Vernal Pool. Activities take place both indoors and outdoors. An adult must accompany children.

April School Vacation Camp: takes place from Mon., April 25 through Thurs., April 28 from 9 am to 3 pm.

Children ages 8 to 12 can learn about and get up close to animals during the Science Center’s April School Vacation Camp: Junior Wild Animal Keepers. What are otter popsicles?

What do you do during training time for a coyote? What kinds of treats and puzzles do opossums like? Does a child you know love caring for animals? Do you wonder what the Science Center’s animals eat for dinner?

Junior Wild Animal Keepers will spend the week learning how NH’s wild animals survive. Participants will then apply that knowledge by helping with the care and feeding of the wildlife at the Science Center. They also will go

behind the scenes to watch staff train animals and then build puzzles and treats to engage resident animals. On Thursday, family, friends, and Science Center staff will stop by to learn about the campers’ adventures.

The Science Center’s popular trails open for the season on Sunday, May 1 from 9:30 am to 5 pm, (last trail admission at 3:30 pm). View live native New Hampshire animals including mountain lions, bobcat, red and gray foxes, river otters, white-tailed deer, black bear, various raptors and owls and much more. New for the 2016 season, the Water Matters Pavilion will be opening, featuring live mink, turtles, fish and frogs and 18 waterrelated exhibits.

Snapdragon’s Spring Play Snapdragon Children’s Theatre announces its dramatic venture for spring 2016 – “A Polynesian Saga.” This will be yet another entertaining Snapdragon production taking place at the Barnstormers Theatre on Main Street in Tamworth. In the 20+ years of Snapdragon Children’s Theatre at the Barnstormers, performances have been set in many parts of the world - China, Russia, Norway, Italy, France, the Middle East,

Tibet, Mexico and India. This spring, Snapdragon turns its attention to the glorious and fascinating (almost) half of the globe’s surface – the heart of Planet Ocean. The story will be truly three-dimensional, taking the audience into the secret, inky depths and the other-worldly denizens of the deep sea, through the levels of the waters and their creatures into the light, the wondrous birds and up into the huge skies and stars above.

On the surface and inhabiting the earth’s thousands of jewel-like islands, the performers will take the audience to meet the Polynesian people, the greatest navigators of the ancient world, and follow one of their epic journeys. They will encounter the awe-inspiring natural forces that rule the ocean in all its moods, their attendant gods, and, true to Snapdragon traditions, the odd dragon or two!

The Snapdragon staff is looking for a big cast, ages 5-15. There will be rich opportunities for actors of every age and experience. The team will include Will Cabell, who once again will lend his creativity to the set, props and lighting. The performance will be at the Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth on Friday, May 13 at 1 pm.

Lakes Region Conservation Trust Expands Fogg Hill Conservation Area The Lakes Region Conservation Trust (LRCT) has announced the expansion of its Fogg Hill Conservation Area in West Center Harbor. The permanent conservation of an abutting 43-acre parcel on Piper Hill Road brings the total acreage of the conservation area to 235. The newly acquired parcel encompasses valuable habitat and 1,250 feet of shoreline on Bear Pond and will allow LRCT to create a trailhead parking area to provide access to all of the trails at the Fogg Hill Conservation Area.

LRCT is grateful for generous support for this recent acquisition from a number of individuals and families in the area, as well as for help in the fundraising from members and directors of the Waukewan and Winona Watershed Protective Association.

In addition, the project received

a generous grant from the New Hampshire Electric Co-op Foundation, as well as a major contribution from the Town of Center Harbor Conservation Fund to purchase a conservation easement on the land to be held by the Town.

LRCT originally acquired 192 acres of the Fogg Hill Conservation Area in 2013 with tremendous support from individuals, businesses, community organizations and foundations in the community and from other towns in the Lakes Region. In addition, the Center Harbor Conservation Fund made a significant contribution towards the project and the Town will hold a conservation easement on the property.

LRCT also received a generous grant from the Aquatic Resources Mitigation (ARM) Fund of New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services

toward conservation and stewardship of the property.

The Fogg Hill Conservation Area forms a significant part of a 900+ acre unfragmented woodland and wetland habitat in the Waukewan and Winona Watershed that is the largest roadless area in Center Harbor. This area is important for wildlife, as well as a number of species of rare and threatened plants, and it is also critical to the quality of surface and ground waters in the Watershed.

Expanding the conserved acreage in this area is essential to maintaining the important habitat, preserving the water quality of the beautiful lakes for recreation and drinking water supplies and protecting the underlying aquifer, also used for drinking water.

In addition, the conserved lands will provide recreational and educational

opportunities for both residents of and visitors to the area.

As owner of the Fogg Hill Conservation Area, LRCT looks forward to its partnership with the Town of Center Harbor as conservation easement holder in conserving and stewarding this important property for the benefit and enjoyment of the community.

Some current sculptures will remain throughout 2016, but those that have been part of the project for two years will be retired and new ones will be juried in. A call to artists has been sent out to more than 600 sculptors in New England and the Northeast area. A jury will meet to select the chosen artists for the 2016 Meredith Sculpture Walk.

Installations will occur in June, with popular docent tours beginning in July.

The Greater Meredith Program (GMP) is a nonprofit community economic development organization seeking to enhance economic vitality, historical and cultural heritage, and town-wide beautification. With the good weather and longer days upon us, residents and visitors are encouraged to tour the Meredith Sculpture Walk, sponsored by the Greater Meredith Program.

Available year-round, the outdoor, juried exhibition features works of New England artists and develops awareness and enjoyment of public art in Meredith.

Thirty-two sculptures are positioned in high-visibility areas along Main Street, Mill Falls Marketplace and in the lakeside Hesky and Scenic Parks.

A self-guided Brochure/Walking Map is available in kiosks found at the entrance to Hesky and Scenic Park, the Courtyard on Main Street, in front of the Post Office and outside Oglethorpe’s in the Mill Fall Marketplace, as well as at Town Hall, the Meredith Library and various businesses throughout the walk.
