A Family Tradition Yields Something Wicked Good

By Thomas P. Caldwell Visitors to New Hampshire may be surprised to see so many winemaking operations in the area, many of them having opened for business within the last decade. In the Lakes Region alone, there are four new wine and mead producers.

Newfound Lake Vineyards of Bristol is among them, having officially opened in September 2013, but owner Heidi von Gotz Cogean has an advantage over the other startups: She is following a family tradition that began in Prussia with her great-great-grandfather. One side of the family has commercially produced wine in Europe ever since.

Heidi’s mother belonged to another branch that, while continuing to produce wine in the family tradition, did so on a small scale, for its own consumption. Heidi picked up the skills and blended them with modern techniques. Now, she said, “I bring my own wine in a suitcase back to Deutchland” when she visits her family there.

When Heidi and her partner, Christopher Coache, launched Newfound Lake Vineyards in 2010, they planted 100 cold-hardy grapevines, but it was not until 2013 that the vineyard was producing the quantity of grapes they needed, and last year was their first full season. They sold 375 cases of wine in 2014 and they hope to sell 500 cases this year.

with them, labeling and corking the bottles. Ruth Couture is the winery assistant, also helping out with selling and marketing; and she makes the wine jelly they sell out of the West Shore Road tasting room.

They make Edelweiss, a dry, white wine, with their own grapes, but they import grapes from California for their classic French wines, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

said they trademarked the name after a local, Hannah Vaiden, tasted it and pronounced it “wicked good” — a Maine and New Hampshire slang term for “exceptionally good”. (Heidi said she had a hard time explaining the name to her German family when telling them about the popular wine.)

Another wine they make from imported grapes is Carménère, a dry, mellow red from grapes they purchase from a family in Chile. Heidi described its taste as falling between a Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

“We buy from the same family be-

cause then we know the quality we’re getting,” Heidi said, noting that also applies to the grapes they purchase from California.

Grape wines and jellies are not the only products they sell; Newfound Lake Vineyards also produces blueberry and cranberry wines using fruit they pick locally, and a cooking wine that uses organic basil from Fred’s Farm in Alexandria, along with lemon, for a wine Heidi says is perfect for chicken or fish, with no other seasoning necessary.

While Heidi grew up in Rhode Island, she has been coming to Newfound Lake since she was a youngster, and she owns land across from Follansbee Cove, a place that holds a lot of great memories for her. That piece of land also has what Heidi believes to be the only cranberries growing around the lake.

Those cranberries go into Newfound Lake Vineyards’ Cranberry Bog wine, a dry and tart wine that leaves a pleasant cranberry aftertaste, and Sweet Follansbee Cove, a sweet and tart dessert wine.

The vineyard also grows organic rhubarb that they use in the creation of Rhubarb Blush, a tangy, blush wine.

For their Wild Blue Oak wine, they use New Hampshire wild blueberries, some of them from their own property.

Heidi explained the process involved in winemaking at Newfound Lake Vineyards. “A truck comes in with 4,000 pounds of grapes,” she said. “We put them through a crusher-destemmer which, if we have six people working, we can do in two hours.”

With an eye toward sustainability, the stems go into a compost pile — as do other byproducts such as yeast and fruit fiber.

The destemmed grapes go into tubs that hold 1,000 pounds, and they add yeast to get rid of the sugar and leave behind the alcohol. They mash the mixture three times a day to keep the yeast working, measuring the alcohol content from day three on. The final day, they measure the alcohol level twice to make sure no sugar remains.

Meanwhile, after the first week, the tubs are removed from the building so, when they are ready to press the grapes, they can put them through a hydraulic press that uses water pressure to compress the sides and force the juice out and into stainless-steel containers for fermentation. They periodically pump the juice into another barrel to get rid of the yeast and fruit fiber that collects.

It takes three to four months to clarify the wine, after which the reds are placed into oak barrels that they import from central France forests, as winemakers have done for centuries. The barrels, which have been toasted on the interior, remain one of France’s biggest exports.

Newfound Lake Vineyards has 17 such barrels, each of which holds 59 gallons of wine. The wine absorbs an oak flavor from charred interiors of the barrels in a process that brings the total time from harvest to bottling to 18 months.

“It takes time to make a good wine,” Heidi said, adding that, “as much as you have to be patient, you also have to move so you can accept the next shipment.”

Because fresh fruit is the key to a good wine, they have to time their deliveries so the grapes arrive when they can process them and get them into barrels, which means previous batches have to be bottled.

Heidi noted that location and weather will affect the wine’s flavor, so the grapes they grow for their Edelweiss will result in a slightly different taste from the Edelweiss produced by Haunting Whisper Vineyard and Spirits in nearby Danbury.

That is part of the reason for the “wine passport” that lists wineries around the state that offer tastings. People are encouraged to visit each winery and get the brochure stamped. Those visiting various numbers of wineries qualify for drawings worth at least $25 in merchandise — bottles of wine, jelly, wine crackers, or glasses — that are for sale by the participating producers.

At Newfound Lake Vineyards, there are tastings each weekend: Fridays from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 pm.

fall, became very rich when the red, setting sun illuminated the foliage, giving it such a warm, appealing feel.

In another, the light hitting a boat at the town docks struck me. The background was not very interesting, though, so I invented a location to put it in that brings together a variety of interesting elements we find around the lake, and sets the boat off.”

He continues, “A cottage bedroom intrigued me, but didn’t really come alive until I returned early in the morning to find a wonderful shaft of light coming from a side window, across the floor and catching the quilt on the bed. Of course light is the key to giving dimension to the cut paper things I’ve been doing recently. I will have one in this show of the Mirror Lake Church, which is such an iconic part of the New England landscape, and is perfect for portrayal in this white-on-white paper

Adds The Art Place gallery owner Barbara Gibbs about Ferber’s artwork, “Peter is such a realist. Not only in the nature in which he paints, but also in his approach to his art and the subject matter that he chooses.

“For example,” Barbara says, “Peter recently joined me on a bike ride of Bridge Falls Path in Wolfeboro to Fernald’s Corner. I wanted him to be inspired to create some paintings of scenes along the path.

“It was a beautiful summer morning, and I pointed out many areas that I have been seeing along the trail on my numerous rides. I thought they might be of interest to him. Peter looked and listened and didn’t quite have the same enthusiasm for these ‘sites’ as I had. So on the way back, he stopped and took pictures of some things that caught his eye along the way. Peter found things of interest to him that to me were not obvious or expected. He said he likes things that are less polished. Once he pointed them out to me, I absolutely found the beauty in his subject matter. This is what inspires Peter. The old gray, shingled boathouse that I had passed by for years had a carved anchor on it that I had never noticed before.

Peter also took multiple pictures of an old boat plunked in the sand, with its torn canopy.

Peter Ferber describes his upcoming show, “In looking over the collection of paintings for this show, I’m struck by the variety of light they show. From early morning to sunset, through tree branches or glinting off the water, it is what draws you to it, whatever the subject or location may be. To enhance this effect, I’ve paid more attention to skies in some of the pieces. In the past, I’ve often kept the sky simple and somewhat generic, but here I’ve given them more of a role. In watercolor this has involved a slightly different method, which allows me more specific definition to the shape of the clouds, while still utilizing the soft, wet-intowet technique that is so beautiful. No need to; it was nature and real with its simple beauty and that is just the way Peter painted it.

“The other picture that just excited us both, was from Mast Landing where Peter was poised behind a tree (he was trespassing just a bit). We both saw two men, generations apart, walking down the dock towards their boat. The posture of the older fisherman with his bait bucket couldn’t have been better.

The light highlighted the green and gold colors on the shallow water in the foreground and just an edge of the old shingled building created its own story of family tradition, well-spent leisure time, and the quality of life that we are fortunate to have when living near the water. Our ride down the trail and back gave me a wonderful perspective into the eyes and soul of a true artist.”

As an added bonus this year, Peter Ferber will be doing a demonstration of painting during Wolfeboro Art Walk on Fri., July 31 from 5 to 8 pm. The

painting he will be working on will be for sale at the show the following day.

Since 1994 Peter Ferber has painted the official posters for the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society’s annual show, which also comes as highly collectable artist proofs. Peter has exhibited in over 50 shows in New England and the Midwest. More than 100 reproductions of his work have been made, including over 70 limited edition prints.

Peter Ferber’s illustrations have appeared in national magazines, including Yankee, Antiques and Connoisseur, and a number of books including a retrospective of the poetry and prose of Doris Peel, entitled Journey to a New Day, and a children’s book written by his wife, Jeannie Ferber, entitled The Tails of Quince and Flute in Semer Wood.

Peter Ferber’s Gallery Show will be on display through August 15 or as long as available. The Art Place is the exclusive gallery for Peter Ferber’s original artwork, and produces many of his limited edition prints. Passing It On: Strategies for Saving Historic Lakeside Property A family’s lakeside camp or cottage is often a cherished place of escape where long summer days are filled with traditional pastimes, memories are made and family bonds are strengthened.

Keeping these camps in family ownership through successive generations can be a challenge, and despite the best intentions of many owners, much can go wrong in the process of trying to assure that subsequent generations can continue to own and maintain these seasonal properties.

Bayswater Spreads the Love of NH with Multi-Author Event Bayswater Books is proud to be located in New Hampshire; a state that contains over 1,300 lakes and ponds, the White Mountains, the legendary Presidential Range and 48 peaks over 4,000 ft., as designated by the Appalachian Mountain Club.

In celebration of all that New Hampshire has to offer, Bayswater will host “What’s So Great About NH,” a multiauthor event on Sat., August 1 from 11 am-1 pm.

The idea for the event came from store owner Michelle Taft, who wanted to draw attention to the importance of recognizing and celebrating the beauty of New Hampshire. This year’s festivities mark the third annual event.

“I think that it is important to preserve and recognize the unique character that is New Hampshire. We thought that it would be a great opportunity to create an event to host New Hampshire authors and highlight the many aspects of what make this state such a great place to live and visit,” said Taft.

Seven New Hampshire authors will come together to remind us “What’s So Great About NH” at Bayswater as they sign their books and meet readers.

Headlining the event will be author/illustrator Karel Hayes signing her latest children’s book, Little Loon, and children’s author Hannah Harrison signing her newest book Bernice Gets Carried Away.

Authors also attending include Daniel Heyduk, Ray Carbone, Rick Shakalis, MaryJane Pettengill, and mystery writer Cathy Strasser.

4-H, Fairs and Country Fun

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Although summer is still in full swing, the wonderful agricultural fairs that NH is known for are coming up in August and into the fall months.

The Lakes Region features a good time for the whole family when the 72nd Belknap County 4-H Fair takes place on August 8 and 9 on Mile Hill Road in Belmont. The fair, like many in the state, showcases the animals and farm products of hard-working farm families. Children, in particular, like to display their farm crops and the work they have been doing with animals.

The Belknap County 4-H Fair has its beginnings in encouraging children to show their agricultural skills. The oldtime fair began in 1943, at a time when making do was the norm. Farming was very important; rationing had taken its toll on people during the years of World War II and growing produce was a good way to ensure a family would be fed.

Parents warned children to “waste not, want not”. These were the values of hard-working families on farms large and small. Country children, whether growing up on a farm or with a backyard garden, often had a cow, pig or other farm animal to care for as well.

The 4-H Fair fit into country life with its philosophy of families working together. It also gave those around the state a much-needed distraction from the war raging in Europe and elsewhere.

In those days, most people had a garden and the produce grown was canned and jams and jellies filled winter storage shelves. Milk might come from the family cow, along with bacon and other meats from a pig.

Children were expected to do their part to benefit the good of the family by doing farm chores, helping in the garden and canning vegetables.

While it was hard work, it was a positive part of life that was reinforced by the local 4-H programs and clubs many kids loved and attended year round.

Fair beginnings were small; the Belknap County 4-H Fair started as a field day in 1943, where children could show dairy animals. This helped them gain confidence to show their farm animals at the late summer/fall state fairs.

According to www.bc4hfair.org, Belknap County 4-H Fair History, the first 4-H Fair was held on Walker’s Lombardy Farm on Parade Road in Laconia. Led by the late Lillian Walker, the event fulfilled her dream of a 4-H fair. She had the support of merchants, friends, and others who believed in the fair; the next step was the “4-H Food for Victory Fair” at Opechee Park in Laconia.

For 4-H kids, nothing was more rewarding than exhibiting their work and competing for prizes. The event took place over the span of a few days and included a track and field meet, a three-legged race, a potato race, obstacle courses and novelty races.

stands had yet to be a part of the fair, and a big picnic took place at the 1943 fair followed by a dairy show. Also held were a 4-H leaders’ meeting, a picnic supper, games and dances and an oldfashioned square dance.

War Bonds and stamps for the World War II war effort were sold in many places and the 4-H Fair also sold bonds. In 1944, money was raised for the purchase of training aircraft for the Army Air Corps (two from Belknap County). Col. Harrison Thyng, the first NH war hero to return home, flew his Thunderbird to Laconia. He made a landing at the airport, representing the Armed Forces.

A few years later, in 1946, the 4-H Fair was held at the Belknap Recreational Area (today’s Gunstock in Gilford), sponsored by the Lakes Region Association. The program of 1946 outlined two full days of events: exhibit judging, a track meet, dairy and livestock showings, swimming and chair tow rides, a picnic, folk and square dancing, games, speakers and movies.

Leaders and members of 4-H set up club exhibits and prize money was a staggering $5 for first place!

Other competition categories included clothing, canning, poultry and eggs, turkeys and rabbits; those who entered had to be at least nine years of age in 1946.

The 1947 fair had many of the same exhibits and events, but a special Quiz Show Program was added. In 1948, one could attend the Governor’s Lucheon, which was quite an important event for children at that time.

The categories became more diversified in 1948 when the fair, held at Belknap Recreational Area, included such divisions as making electrical equipment, forestry and maple products, health and safety, home management, beekeeping and crafts.

The prize money in 1946 seems very small by today’s standards, but it was something substantial for young people to work towards in those days. Home Management first prize money was 50 cents and a prize ribbon; second place was 25 cents and third place received a ribbon.

The fair moved to Opechee Park in 1950, where it was held until it moved to the former Royal Smith Farm on Mile Hill Road, Belmont in 1977, where it is held today.

Over the years the fair became more sophisticated, while still retaining the agricultural/farm focus that was its hallmark. In 1950 the fair was sponsored by the Laconia Council Knights of Columbus and featured a big carnival each evening. A 4-H Tractor Operator’s Contest must have been a thrill to young boys and teens.

Competition components included a written test, tractor inspection, starting the engine, warm-up, driving and backing the vehicle up!

Other 1950 fun events included a bicycle race for balance, pedaling and braking, signaling, mounting, turning around and emergency turn and stop.

By 1952, a circus parade, a track meet and swimming competitions were added to the agricultural exhibits and contests.

As the years moved on, the size of the fair grew. In 1967 the events spread over Opechee Park and the Memorial Junior High School in Laconia.

By 1978, the fair, held in Belmont, had exhibits and competitions for 4-H members in greater numbers.

Children could compete in such categories as photography, electricity, entomology, safety and health, science and gardening, along with the standard dairy and animal exhibits.

The adult beetle is about half an inch long with bronze and metallic green coloring.

Affected Species

Roses, Birches, Lindens, Purple Plums, Cherry, and Dogwoods are favorites, however almost any plant with a succulent leaf is a potential target for this hungry beetle.

Symptoms & Damage

The adult beetle is a voracious feeder causing skeletonization of leaves. At the grub stage, they eat turf roots, which can cause extensive damage to your lawn.

Prevention & Treatment

Control is best achieved in the larval stage by treating your lawn during the Where the for Lakes Region summer or fall to reduce the beetle population the following year. Clicks!

Adult beetles can be suppressed now with repeated organic or traditional spraying.

Pheromone lures are not recommended – they attract more beetles than they trap.

Lancaster Fair, north of the Lakes Region, is scheduled for September

2-7 and is a great country fair.

Entertainment includes a pig scramble, 5th Annual Fireman’s Muster Show, Classic Cruise Night, The Logger Show, Big Rig Truck Pull, many events for children, including a fair scavenger hunt, pedal tractor pull, Little Miss Lancaster Fair and other happenings.

Among all the other fairs, the mustsee for many families is the annual Sandwich Fair, held at the Sandwich Fairgrounds. This year’s fair will be held on Oct. 10-12 with 4-H competitions, a midway, concessions, oxen pulling, live music and much more.

Like the Belknap County 4-H Fair,

the Sandwich Fair began with a focus on agriculture, although it started much earlier (in the late 1800s). The first fairs featured a band, a baby contest and displays of fancy work, flowers, plants and animal exhibits.

Today the fair is known as the last of the yearly agricultural fairs. The events around the state vary in size but nearly all focus on at least a portion of the

time featuring 4-H competitions.

The organizers of the early Belknap County 4-H Fair had it right when they decided to hold an event that would give kids a chance to show their farm animals. The country focus of the state’s fairs thrives as a way for youngsters to get involved and no fair does it better than the beloved Belknap County 4-H Fair, coming up in a few weeks.

Introduce Kids to Hiking on Lockes Hill Trails in Gilford Story and Photo by Sarah Wright I’ve always liked hiking. I enjoy breathing in the fresh air on a brisk fall morning in the woods, or on a warm day, stopping to look up and see the sun filtering through the leaves. It brings about a sense of peace for me, and then the feeling of accomplishment when finally reaching the top.

Now, I’m definitely not a hardcore hiker. I avoid hikes that require any kind of specialized gear found in outdoor equipment stores. But when you have young children, even an “easy” hike can be a challenge. My kids love to explore the woods, and we’ve taken every walking trail imaginable. However, now that they’re 4 and 6 years old, it was time to think about a real hike.

If you’re like most residents in the Lakes Region, you’ve been on Route 11. I take that road a lot. On a nice weekend, you can’t miss the mile of cars that park along the road by the Mount Major trail in Alton Bay. I know that there are amazing views at the top, but I’ve read that it’s a little steep, and I’m not sure I like the idea of sharing the trail with so many people.

So what about Lockes Hill in Gilford? I’d noticed the small sign many times and wondered about the trails, and why so few cars were parked there.

I decided to poke around online and realized that it was just the hike I was looking for. There are similar views to Mount Major, but not quite as high up.

It’s also a shorter loop trail, only about 1.8 miles long.

My boys were excited to go, and I packed a lunch to eat at the top. For extra motivation in case the kids started complaining, I threw a couple of

chocolate chip cookies in the bag, too.

I highly recommend that strategy. We were going to attempt the whole loop, so I had to be prepared.

We went on a weekday, and there were just a couple of cars in the small lot. I suppose you’d have to park along Route 11 if it got busier, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen. There are two trails to the top: the Quarry Trail and the Lakeview Trail. We chose the Quarry Trail for the hike up. The trail was clearly marked, and there were signs posted along the way with nature facts about trees and animals. It was a great way for the kids to learn as they hiked.

The Quarry Trail runs along a small stream for part of the way, and a still pond, so bug spray is an absolute ne-

cessity if you choose that path. I discovered later that it’s also the longer side of the loop, and rockier, so if you have younger children, you may want to choose the Lakeview Trail to the summit and then go back down that same way.

My kids didn’t have a problem on the Quarry Trail, but they did start to wonder when we would finally reach the top. We took a lot of water breaks and met a family on their way down who gave us some encouraging words about how close we were to the summit.

When we finally made it to the top, we were all excited. There was quite a bit to explore. The views of Lake Winnipesaukee were beautiful, and there was even a tall viewfinder that the kids could look through to see the islands

close up. We met a couple at the top who pointed out the wild blueberries that were growing along the trail, so we immediately started snacking on them.

The boys loved finding this “treasure” at the top.

After our picnic lunch, we headed back down via the Lakeview Trail. Just a little ways down is another viewpoint, complete with rock “chairs” obviously created by hikers over the years. My older son decided to move a few rocks around to make a rock couch. I sat for a while, enjoying the breeze, while the kids played, and took turns at another viewfinder. You could certainly shorten the hike a lot by just taking the Lakeview Trail up to this point and then back down, without going all the way to the summit.

As we got further along, the trail winded its way back and forth, zigzagging down to the parking lot. We were all tired by then, but as a mother it felt great to accomplish this first hike (and no one got hurt!).

Overall, it took us 2.5 hours, but we were going slowly and taking lots of breaks along the way. I’m sure that a regular hiker could do it in far less time than that. If your child is skittish around dogs, note that dogs are allowed on the trail. They are supposed to be on a leash, but we met some dog walkers who didn’t comply with this regulation.

The Lockes Hill trails are a great way to introduce kids to hiking. I’m already planning to take my boys back there in the fall for some leaf peeping. Hiking is a wonderful way to spend some quality time together, and it’ll create memories that your kids won’t soon forget!

Lake Wentworth Sailing Regatta Open to All For who those love to sail competitively, the New Hampshire Boat Museum, the Lake Wentworth Association, and Wolfeboro Parks and Recreation are teaming up to offer the Lake Wentworth Sailing Regatta on Sat., August 1 with a rain date of Sun., August 2. Weather cancellations and updates will be available at www. nhbm.org. or by calling 569-4554.

The event will be held at Albee Beach in Wolfeboro. Registration will begin at noon on race day. Racers are encouraged to come early to register.

Races begin promptly at 2 pm and will be held throughout the afternoon.

Following the Regatta, awards will be given out for each class of boat and there will be a potluck celebration with snacks and drinks.

There are four classes of boats racing: Sunfish, Optis, Mono Hulls and Catamarans. The event is open to sailors of all ages. To encourage young participants who have completed the Racing Instructional Class offered by the Parks and Recreation Department, young people may reserve one of the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s Optis or Sunfish through the Town’s Instructors. These are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

All participants are encouraged to bring a snack or beverage to share with the group following the Regatta.

The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand welcome ‘60s Invasion, a band that takes listeners on a trip to the 1960s, one of the most influential decades in musical history.

The concert is set for Sat., August 1, from 7 to 9 pm at Cate Park in Wolfeboro.

The band has made numerous appearances around the Lakes Region and has previously played in the concert series. The group started building its repertoire from the band that is primarily responsible for defining the music of the 1960s, The Beatles, but has expanded its catalog to include a wide variety of other bands, including the Byrds, the Grass Roots and more.

Head back to the 1960s in Cate Park on August 1 for ‘60s Invasion at the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand in Wolfeboro.

Jack Little plays bass guitar and also adds vocals to the mix. His background in brass instruments and his love of jazz brought him around several jazz ensembles during the late 1970s and eventually led to him studying the bass guitar. He has performed original music with Paintbox at a number of establishments throughout the region.

Dave Vose is the band’s drummer and also chips in on vocals. He has performed with The Drifters, Freddy Cannon and Freedom and is also kept busy as an artist and clinician with the Yamaha company and as a professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Bob Cleary plays guitar and sings with the group and brings many years of professional experience to the stage.

He has shared the stage with Rex

Trailer, Henry “The Fonz” Winkler and others. He studied music at Berklee College of Music and performance and theater art at Emerson College.

The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand continues to provide quality entertainment to the citizens of the Lakes Region with the free community concert series each and every Saturday night in July and August, weather permitting. If bad weather is in the forecast and the concert has to be cancelled, there will be a sign at the entrance to the park announcing such as well as a notice at wolfeborobandstand.org.

While there is no charge for the concert, a pass-the-hat collection is taken at intermission to help support the Friends of the Community Bandstand and the efforts to continue to provide high-quality acts in the bandstand every summer.

Rainy Day Fun With the Kids

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper It’s summer. It’s vacation time. It’s beach, waterslide, ice cream, picnic, and boating and ballpark time. It sounds perfect, but those plans can fizzle when skies turn cloudy and rain is forecast. Luckily, most Lakes Region summer days are sunny and warm, but the occasional rainy day does occur.

Do not lose heart if it is raining; there are many fun things to do with your family/kids on rainy Lakes Region days.

For a fun and memorable excursion, head to the Margret and H.A. Rey Center and Curious George Cottage at 35 Village Road in Waterville Valley.

The Center is open Tuesday-Saturday.

If you do not know who the Reys were, you will probably recognize their beloved children’s storybook character, Curious George!

Margret and H.A. Rey were former summer residents of Waterville Valley.

They were adventurers, historians and naturalists, gardeners and stewards.

Today their spirit lives on in the Margret and H.A. Rey Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the Reys’ legacy through art, science and adventure programs for all ages.

The Center has something fun taking place every day and it is a great rainy day get away for the whole family.

Immerse yourself in all things Curious George: Try your hand at drawing in the style of H.A. Rey, relax on a beanbag chair, read your favorite Curious George stories, see original artwork by the Reys, and more. All ages are welcome.

During each week, special activities take place, such as Water Watchers on July 29 when Rey Center staff conduct water quality monitoring in Waterville Valley. (The program runs from 9-11:30 am every other Wednesday through August 26.)

When it’s raining outside, there is always something fun to do at the Meredith Children’s Museum at 28 Lang Street in Meredith. The museum is appropriately located in a former elementary school and has a lot to delight kids of all ages.

The Bubble Room offers a bubble table for making huge bubbles, a bubble tire so kids can experience what it feels like to be inside a bubble, a silhouette wall, a Where in the World exhibit to teach kids about geography, a Make Believe Room with a fire truck, police car, castle with slide and tunnel, a puppet theater, log cabin room, a rolling ball exhibit and a grocery store.

Every child loves the water and boating. Just because the weather turns cloudy, don’t assume you have to miss out on lake fun. A day’s adventure waits in Weirs Beach at the M/S Mount Washington, the “big boat” of Lake Winnipesaukee.

Being out on the water is fun even if it is rainy, and the Lake Explorers – Family Cruise offered via the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness is just the thing for the whole family, whether rain or shine.

The Explorers cruise takes off from the docks at the NH Fish & Game

Boat Launch on Rt. 113 in Holderness (call ahead at 968-7194 to reserve) on Tuesdays through August 11 at 10 am.

Participants with kids age 5 and up can experience Squam Lake as active explorers. The family-style cruise gives kids a chance to use binoculars to look for Common Loons, collect microscopic life and watch live fish.

They also will join in a scavenger hunt and test navigational skills. The cruise runs for 90 minutes and takes place unless weather conditions are extreme – call ahead to verify.

Summertime offers a number of fun children’s theatre programs in the Lakes Region, just the right thing for a rainy day.
