Camping Fun...

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper It started with an invitation to spend a few days camping. It was an innocent offer and Jane Thibeault and Don McIver of New Hampton were happy to take Jane’s son up on an invitation to join him in northern NH, although the couple had not been camping in years.

“My son bought a new trailer (camper) and invited us up for a visit,” says Jane. “We found we loved it – sitting around the campfire and relaxing.”

Don and Jane had been camping in the past, and Jane says, “Don used to camp in a tent and I had a pop-up camper when my kids were growing up. They loved it and I think that’s why my son got into camping as an adult.”

Don says they decided to “pick up a small camper and we found one on Craigslist on the internet.”

Jane and Don traveled to Pittsfield, NH to check out the 1965 Cerro Scottie camper and found it in disrepair. Jane laughs as she recalls, “The ceiling was bad and there was a hole cut in the floor because the owners took the camper on the ice for winter ice fishing!”

Although the camper was in lessthan-great shape, Don and Jane bought it anyhow. Luckily Don has a talent for fixing things and Jane is a good decorator/seamstress. Together they turned the little camper – which they named Harvey the RV – into a charming vacation on wheels that turned heads wherever it went. Although they say they didn’t put a ton of work into

the camper, but fixed it up to their liking, Harvey was a charming piece of camper history that charmed and started conversations when Jane and Don took it on the road.

They had Harvey for three years and took it to campsites at the ocean and at lake sites. “We sold it after three years,” Jane says, “because the ceiling was low and Don, who is tall, could not stand up straight in it!”

By this time, Jane and Don were hooked on vintage campers, like many others across the country. Everyone, from famous country-and-western singers to everyday folks, are buying up the little campers from the 1950s, 60s and 70s and fixing them up and decorating them in vintage style.

It didn’t take long for Harvey to sell thanks to the networking Don and Jane had done and the friends they made while camping and attending vintage camper rallies. After posting Harvey for sale on their Facebook page, the camper generated a lot of interest from as far away as Texas and Arkansas. The woman who purchased Harvey came from Pennsylvania and couldn’t have been more thrilled with her purchase.

“It is not good to let them sit in the yard; they need to be used,” Jane says. Even before Harvey sold, Jane and Don had already bought a second camper. They set to work fixing it up and felt confident, after the repairs they made to Harvey, that they could handle refurbishing their second camper.

little need for the second bed.

“I kept bumping my head on it when I was making the bottom bed,” Jane says with a smile. They don’t miss the second bed and Don added storage where that bed had been.

A teeny bathroom just about large enough to call it a closet-sized space was removed and now serves as much needed extra storage for clothing and camping supplies.

“Wherever we camp, they have showers and bathrooms, so we could easily do without the bathroom in the camper,” Jane explains. Storage space was more important. Additional storage areas fit under the raised dining table area and in a few other places inside the camper.

HiLander, which they nicknamed Angus the HiLander. Equally as eye catching as the couple’s first camper, Angus sports a retro style with white and blue paint on its exterior and the same intense blue trim inside the camper.

Angus had some issues when Don and Jane purchased it, such as the original sink area needing an update.

The walls sported paneling, popular in the 1970s, and Don replaced it in keeping with the retro camper look.

Jane says storage is always a major concern with a little camper such as Angus and they have addressed that issue with clever built-in storage here and there inside the camper.

Originally, a bed large enough to fit two adults was built in above the existing lower double bed area, but since Don and Jane usually don’t bring others on their camping trips, they had

“We heard about the camper from a friend,” Don says. “It was in Massachusetts and had been in a family for some time. We find that parents and grandparents once used a lot of the older campers, which are still in the same family. Often, the old campers are sitting unused in a field or behind a house because families just don’t have any need for them.”

Don adds there are dedicated collectors of old campers riding the back roads looking for the little trailers.

They don’t hesitate to stop and knock on doors if they spy a camper sitting in a field or backyard. If they are lucky, now and then a camper might be for sale.

It took Don and Jane many hours to refurbish Angus to the condition it is now in, but it was well worth the effort. The sink, stove and range hood were replaced and although the early campers often came with an icebox, Jane says theirs is now equipped with a dorm-sized refrigerator which fits seamlessly in one wall. The appliances are a startling blue, which might look too bright elsewhere but seems just right in the little retro camper.

Jane has decorated the dining table with dinner plates and coffee cups straight out of the early 1970s and for an added blast from the past, a sleek bright blue plastic radio holds pride of place on the table.

Photo by Bill Spindler summer breeze blowing through the camper, this is Jane and Don’s idea of heaven. They are not alone in that sentiment. Jane says they often attend rallies at various campgrounds, and it is a chance to meet up with old friends and to show off the fun little campers to others who are curious.

Don adds that when traveling with Angus, it isn’t uncommon for those who pass them on the highway to stare and smile and give a thumbs up. And truckers at rest stops often want see Angus up close and engage Don and Jane in conversation about the campers that were once the darlings of our parents and grandparents.

The camper is pulled by a pickup truck (Angus weighs about 1,400 pounds). It is powered inside – the lights, refrigerator, etc. – by electricity, which is obtained at whatever campground they visit.

And speaking of campgrounds,

they like the Brattleboro North KOA campground in Dummerston, Vermont.

“They love vintage campers and really cater to campers,” says Jane.

Don says they love the campground rally at the Brattleboro location with a full weekend of camping, showing off all the retro campers and socializing with old friends and those who might be getting started in camping.

“Some people stage their campers so they are all decked out inside with a theme, such as a Coca Cola theme or a cowboy theme. And a person from the Vintage Trailer Supply company in Vermont comes to tell us about the latest supplies,” Jane explains.

Thus, such things as door locks and hubcaps are difficult to find for the vintage campers. When the Vintage Trailer Supply rep stops by to share information on the latest items in stock, it is great news for Don and Jane and the other campers.

“We like the social part of camping, and visiting with the other campers,” Don says. “We have met some great people that have become good friends.”

Jane is excited about a July camping rally at a local campground that she and Don will be attending. “Since we all like to outfit our campers with retro items, a group of us will get together and go yard saling and thrift shopping on the rally weekends, and we will surely do that during the local upcoming event,” she says.

Now and then the couple will purchase an old camper just to save it. They value this charming piece of American history and vacationing and see the worth in trying to salvage an old camper. It certainly is a labor of love, and there is always a lot of

interest generated when Don brings an old, distressed camper back to life and to its former glory.

He stresses he isn’t interested in “restoring” campers, which would mean that everything had to be redone to its original condition and style.

Rather, he and Jane have enjoyed fixing up their campers and retaining as much of the period design as possible, but not getting hung up on everything being exact.

That would take the fun out of the vintage camping; for Don and Jane, camping is indeed all about the fun.

If you happen to spot a charming little blue and white camper, circa 1972, ambling down a NH byway, pulled by a truck with a happy couple on their way to a new adventure, you probably have come across Jane and Don. Remember to smile and give them

a thumbs up when you pass, and you will get a smile and a wave in return as Angus transports them to another weekend of camping fun.

Tuckermans at Cate Park It’s a cappella under the stars on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee as Tuckermans at 9 returns to Cate Park on Sat., July 18 at 7 pm in Wolfeboro.

The concert is the second in the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand’s free summer concert series.

The group, dubbed “T9” by fans, last appeared at Cate Park in 2012.

Fun for All at Annual Nickfest The 9th Annual Nickfest will be held Sat., July 18 from 11 am to 4 pm on Memorial Field, Main St., Wolfeboro, next to Brewster Academy. The rain date will be Sun., July 19. The cost is $12 per person with children aged two and under free. Nickfest tickets are available for purchase at Black’s Paper Store, downtown Wolfeboro, for a discounted rate of $10 each.

Included with the price of admission, is a selection of inflatable games including the 4-Bungee Trampolines, Wrecking Ball, Moebius Combo, a Vertical Rush, a Climbing Wall, a Castle Bounce, a photo booth, a petting zoo, face painting, live

Ruggles Mine: A Unique Experience Story and Photos by Sarah Wright I picked up a brochure for Ruggles Mine a couple of years ago, and held onto it until my kids got a little older.

Well, we finally made the trip there last week, and it’s pretty spectacular to see in person. Not only is Ruggles Mine historic, but the views also are amazing.

At the end of a steep road up the mountainside off Route 4 in rural Grafton, we got to the mine’s entrance.

I was thinking about what it must have been like in the 1800s, with horses pulling carts up and down that mountain road. We pulled into the parking lot

at the top and got out to enjoy the panoramic view of the mountains, specifically Mount Cardigan, which has an elevation of about 3,121 feet.

The mine was actually opened to the public in 1963, and yes, visitors are free to take home with them whatever they collect. That means you can use mining tools and actually chip away

at the walls of this historic mine. (My sons were certainly thrilled at the idea of having permission to smash rocks with hammers.)

The women in the gift shop were most helpful. If you forget to bring a bucket, like we did, you can purchase one as a souvenir. And if you don’t have tools or don’t want to use your own tools from home, there are hammers to rent as well.

Before we entered the mine, we went into the small museum and looked at the interesting artifacts and photos from the early days of mining. Old products that used minerals from the mine were on display as well as mining tools like helmets and pick axes, and even an old dynamite detonation box. A couple of original metal carts were there, too, once used to haul rocks out of the mine. We sat down and watched the short video about the history of Ruggles Mine, and then it was time to pretend to be miners ourselves.

• Ruggles Continued from page 14 imagine what the mine’s first owner, Sam Ruggles, must’ve gone through when he started mining all those years ago. Sam first discovered mica on his property in 1803, and embarked on what would become one of the largest mining operations of its kind in the United States. It’s a pretty impressive undertaking.

In the 19th century, mica was used in many household products. It was transparent and heat-resistant, so it was especially good for ship windows and windows on wood stoves.

Later on, it was used as an electrical insulator, and today it’s used in things like asphalt roof shingles and even lipstick!

Sam knew the high value of mica at the time, so he decided to keep the mine a secret from his neighbors. This meant employing family members, and disguising the mica in the wagons by covering it with sand. Sometimes he moved product to Portsmouth at night, shipping it to England so it could be sold without anyone knowing its true origin.

Since Sam’s death, the mine has had many owners, and other valuable materials have been mined at Ruggles.

When J.W. Kelton owned the mine in 1874, the mica was no longer a secret, being transported by train out of Grafton.

The American Minerals Company began mining at Ruggles for feldspar in 1912. Feldspar was used in the glaze on fine china, and in the enamel on appliances. False teeth were also made with feldspar. Next was the Bon Ami Company, who owned and operated

Ruggles Mine from 1932 to 1959. They used feldspar in their non-abrasive scouring powder and glass cleaner.

Beryl was also mined at Ruggles at one time. Beryl is what makes up beryllium metal, which is lighter than aluminum, but stronger than steel.

Its alloys are used in atomic reactors, electrical components, and even in NASA spaceship materials.

And now it was our turn to see what we could find. We were greeted by a young man named Hunter when we entered the mine; he gave us some helpful information, and said he’d be around if we wanted to know what kinds of rocks we had collected.

The kids wanted to explore every hollowed-out cave, so we took our time going through each one, hammering large rocks into smaller pieces as we went along.

After a little more than an hour, we

got to the lookout point at the other end of the mine, and it seemed like the perfect spot to have our picnic lunch. We sat on a big rock, facing Mount Kearsarge and Ragged Mountain. By now our bucket was almost full, so when Hunter checked on us, I asked if he could tell the kids what they had found.

Of course we had lots of mica, and we also had quartz, smoky quartz, and feldspar, with some

rocks being a blend of the two. But we also had a basalt lava rock, which was reddish brown on the outside, and plain black basalt on the inside, when split open with a hammer. I thought that was pretty interesting. We also had some tourmaline and pyrite, or “fool’s gold.”

Hunter knew of a spot where there was some dark orange citrine, and he was kind enough to chip off a small piece for us.

The kids wanted to hit the caves on the other side of the passage on the way back, so that’s what we did. They never got bored with the hammers, and actually asked me if we could come back to Ruggles Mine every day! I consider that a successful trip for sure.

It was a lot of great exercise as well, since there were inclines to walk up and down throughout the mine, and guess who got to carry the full bucket of rocks? Me, of course. But it was such a beautiful day, I didn’t even mind.

Lots Going on at Meredith Fine Craft Gallery Stop by the League of NH Craftsmen – Meredith Fine Craft Gallery on Saturday, July 18 from 11 am to 2 pm for a free 2015 Ornament Demonstration with artist Kristine Lane.

Kristine Lane, co-creator of the 2015 Ltd. Edition League ornament Sweet Seasons, will be at the Meredith Gallery discussing the steps of creating ornaments.

A PowerPoint presentation will be on display demonstrating the fabrication process of the ornaments. Attendees will be given an opportunity to have their own ornaments person-

alized to give as a gift or add to your own collection. The ornament comes gift-boxed with a descriptive card, and will be available for purchase at the Meredith Gallery.

The League also will present a free lecture by award-winning master wood turner Donald Briere on July 20 from 7 to 8 pm. The Meredith Bay Colony Club will host the lecture.

Donald will talk about his unique creative processes and his love of

woodturning for the past 15-plus years.

Using domestic and exotic hardwoods, along with semi-precious stones, Donald creates segmented woodturnings that range from those with just a couple of pieces to more intricate ones with thousands.

In 2009 Donald won Best in Show at the League of NH Craftsmen’s Fair at the Mt. Sunapee Resort, in Living With Crafts. At the end of the lecture there will be a question-and-answer period and some of his pieces will be on display.

Boeing-Boeing with Village Players Cast members have been working hard to memorize lines and stage directions. Work has been moving along with the construction of the set.

On July 24, it will all come together when Boeing-Boeing opens on the stage at the Village Players Theater in Wolfeboro.

Veteran Village Players set builder Jay Sydow has been working with director Russ Ellis to construct the set, which will be an apartment in Paris in the 1960s. Mike Shaw, Dan Charlton, Bob Tuttle, Don Hargy and Joshua Spaulding helped with set construction.

As for the people that will be filling that set during performances, Ellis has cast a group of actors who many in the community will be familiar with.

The plot unfolds in the 1960s, with bachelor Bernard living quite the life in Paris, as he balances three separate girlfriends. His schedule works out quite well, since the women are all flight attendants and they are never in town on the same day. (Veteran Village Players member Rick Tessari playsthe part of Bernard.)

Bernard’s American friend, Robert, comes to visit and is impressed with the life that his friend is leading, particularly as he meets each of the women. (Another Village Players veteran, Danny Catalano, plays Robert.)

However, things become complicated for both Robert and Bernard when Boeing introduces its new faster jets.

And with faster jets come changed schedules and suddenly Bernard’s three

Karner Blue Butterfly Conservation On Thursday, July 16th, learn about the efforts being made to save the Karner Blue Butterfly.

Through the cooperation of many organizations and agencies, work began in the 1990’s to restore the population of New Hampshire’s endangered state butterfly, the Karner Blue. NHF&G Biologist Rebecca Segelhurst will discuss how they are working to recover the population through habitat management practices, the use of a captive rearing program, and public outreach.

Lakes Region Chordsmen Summer Concerts at the Weirs The popular Lakes Region Chordsmen Barbershoppers will perform in a series of free concerts on an outdoor stage, weather permitting, at Weirs Beach. Seating will be on bleachers, at tables and on the lawn at the Winnipesaukee Marketplace, 21 Weeks St., Weirs Beach.

The Lakes Region Chordsmen Barbershoppers will perform every Wednesday from July 8 to Aug. 5 at 7:45 pm. For over 60 years (since 1954), the Lake Region Chordsmen has been singing old-time barbershoppers favorites in Weirs Beach. The group consists of about 20 singers of all ages.

Several members of the Chordsmen have formed their own classic barbershopper quartets, and the quartets

alternate segments of the concert with the larger group. Occasionally, other large groups of barbershoppers make guest appearances and the combined groups sing together.

This summer’s program, featuring the Chordsmen, will also include some very fine barbershop singing by several choruses and quartets.

Guest performers are as follows: on July 15, the Honeymooners quartet will be on stage; on July 22, the Nashua Granite Statesmen chorus will join the Chordsmen; on July 29, the Concord Coachmen chorus and quartets will perform and on Aug. 5, the quartet On Air will be on stage.

A Trip To Welton Falls in Alexandria

By Thomas P. Caldwell Don’t be deterred by the sign the town has posted, stating that the two-plank bridge ahead of you is not maintained and you should proceed at your own risk. Just find a spot to park, and cross the bridge on foot.

Ignore the deer flies that instantly surround your vehicle as you pull into the parking lot. They disappear as soon as you exit the vehicle, and won’t bother you again.

Don’t be alarmed by the “no trespassing” and “private property” signs that line the road. The road itself is public, as is the trail you will find to your left a short distance up the road. There will be more postings on the left as you make your way along the trail, but that is simply to keep you from wandering off the path and onto private property.

The yellow blazes on the trees will testify that you are, indeed, on the Manning Trail and on your way to Alexandria’s Welton Falls. All those things that seemed designed to deter you from making the trek only make the visit more intriguing, with the anticipation of seeing the “hidden gem” of the Lakes Region building as you reach the stream crossing, a row of small boulders that will require a bit of dexterity if you want to avoid getting wet.

Let’s note right here that there is an alternative to approaching the trail from Welton Falls Road: You could start from above, at the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Cardigan Lodge, located on Shem Valley Road, but that requires hiking a greater distance to reach the falls,

which is why we decided to take the quicker route, from below.

Having lived in the Lakes Region for years, we had heard about Welton Falls, but had never actually visited it. There were stories of people leaping into the pool at the bottom of the falls, or swimming in the river below the falls, but it was not until the end of a hot day in early July that we decided the time was right to seek out the waterfall.

tions. She was not very cooperative, however, trying to direct us to Wilton VA, rather than Welton Falls Road, Alexandria NH. It required some back-and-forth argument with our device to get Siri to finally lay out the route for us: Route 3-A from downtown Bristol to West Shore Road, then Mount Cardigan Road to Fowler River Road. Taking a right at Brook Road, then bearing left at the intersection with Gove Road, we were finally on Welton Falls Road, which turns to dirt at the fork with Cream Hill Road. Taking that left brings one to the wooden plank bridge and the start of the

walking trek.

Having reached the river crossing, and picked our way across the stones, we picked up the trail on the other side and followed it to the right as it rose above the river and followed its curves.

Before we realized it, we had reached the falls: a stream cutting through the rock and dropping through an eight-foot cascade before making a 15-foot plunge into a deep, narrow hole.

Our first thought was that anyone diving there was taking an unreasonable risk. It was not an inviting waterfall: Hard rock all around, a swift current, and more rock channels below. There are people who thrive on such challenges, but we are not among them.

It is an impressive sight, however; perhaps more impressive because of the solid posts and protective cable installed to keep people from accidentally falling off the edge. A slip there would not end well.

In many ways. Welton Falls State Forest reminds one of nearby Sculptured Rocks in Groton, an area along the Cockermouth River where the rushing water has carved out similar channels and holes, pots that are as smooth and creative as the works of a talented sculptor.

After viewing the falls from below and making the climb to see the chasm from above, it seemed logical to continue along the trail, for the evening was young and there was more to see.

Then, suddenly, the path becomes even and friendly, making for a gentle walk.

past a long ledge and fills several pools that make great wading spots — surely welcome places to be on a hot summer’s day. Moss-covered ledges flank the river and extend flat surfaces toward the water where one might want to lie in the sun or enjoy a picnic lunch.

Continuing past that idyllic spot, the trail begins to climb more consistently as it heads to the summit of Firescrew. On that particular day, when the climb started to leave the river behind, we turned around and headed back down to return home.

However, someone willing to go the entire 1.2-mile length of the trail would arrive at the 1,000-acre Cardigan Reservation where the AMC lodge is located, and where another trail leads to the summit of Mount Cardigan.

waterfall in the area: Elizabeth Falls, off Holt Brook, is said to be a 40-foot waterfall, only 1.5 miles from the AMC lodge. That can be a trip for another day.

Then there is the 40-foot Profile Falls, a beautifully cascading waterfall on the Smith River in south Bristol. Apart from some poison ivy that one must be careful to avoid, Profile Falls offers a great place to swim, sun, picnic, or read while the mist from the falls drifts by.

These are just some of the beautiful places to go in the Lakes Region which has an abundance of hiking trails, rivers, and ponds, as well as lakes Winnipesaukee, Winnisquam, Squam, and Newfound … and many more. Go ahead, get out and explore on your own … but be sure and include Welton Falls on your list of places to visit.

Lake Wentworth’s Ecology Through the Years The New Hampshire Boat Museum’s second lecture of the summer season, entitled Pristine Lake Wentworth: How Good Were the Good Old Days? will be given by Don Kretchmer, a Certified Lakes Manager and member of the Lake Wentworth Foundation and Lake Wentworth Association. The talk will be held on Thursday, July 16 at 7 pm and is free and open to the public.

Kretchmer’s talk will examine Lake Wentworth’s ecology through time, looking at how man and nature have affected water quality. (Over the past 30 years, volunteers have monitored water quality resulting in a watershed management plan for the lake.)

The talk will explore the question of what Lake Wentworth looked like 100 years ago, 1,000 years ago or 10,000 years ago. What kind of fish lived in the lake? Who used the lake and for what?

What were the water levels? Was the lake as clear as it is now? Were there aquatic plants?

The history of Lake Wentworth includes natural phenomenon like glaciation, hurricanes, tornados and forest fires as well as man-made changes due to logging, damming, agriculture, road building, development and lake use. Using historical accounts and photographs, analysis of sediments, old maps and computer simulations, Kretchmer will shed light on these questions and make predictions for the future. He will also discuss actions to help ensure high quality water for

Meetinghouses with Photographer Paul Wainwright Paul Wainwright, award-winning photographer and author, will use several of his large-format photographs of the few surviving “mint condition” meetinghouses to illustrate a presentation on New England’s Colonial Meetinghouses and Their Impact on American Society. Sponsored by the New Hampshire Humanities Council and supported by the National Endowment

for the Humanities, his program will take place Tues., July 21, at 7 pm in the historic Carroll County Court House on Route 171 in Ossipee Village. As hosts, the Ossipee Historical Society welcomes the public to attend, and although no admission will be charged, donations would be appreciated.

Wainwright will tell the story of a society that built these structures as

places for worship and town meetings— as centers for life in New England’s Colonial communities.

Described by the New Hampshire Humanities Council, his presentation will provide “a solid overview of colonial society and its values” by examining the type of building in a particular community and connecting the culture of its inhabitants to current “democratic and community

values.”

Based in Atkinson, New Hampshire, Wainwright is the author of A Space for Faith: The Colonial Meetinghouses of New England, a book published in 2010 that includes his photographs and an essay by Peter Benes, noted Colonial historian. The book showcases the beauty and history of the few remaining Colonial meetinghouses in New England.

The Hebron Fair is Coming!

The Hebron Fair is a hallmark of summer in the Newfound Lake area.

Isles of Shoals in Ashland Historian J. Dennis Robinson will speak on Treasure from the Isles of Shoals: How New Archaeology is Changing Old History at 7 pm on Tues., July 14, at the Ashland Railroad Station Museum in Ashland.

Robinson will discuss recent archaeological excavations on Smuttynose Island and how it has added to our knowledge of the history of the island group off the New Hampshire seacoast, from the prehistoric occupation by Native Americans through the fishing colony of the 17th and 18th centuries to the coming of tourism in the 19th century.

Walking Paths Make Exceptions Under ADA

Caldwell Walking paths and multi-use trails designed to promote health and fitness frequently have prohibitions on motorized vehicles in order to ensure the safety of users and protect the trail surface. With an aging population in mind, most new trails are designed to the standards set out in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which include making them wheelchair-accessible and of sufficient width to allow safe passage in both directions. Most sections of the trails observe grade limits to avoid steep areas that those with

disabilities cannot manage, and note exceptions so those unable to navigate those sections can avoid them.

Robert Hanson of Wolfeboro, an advocate for the disabled, has been spreading the word about a new provision of the ADA that took effect on Jan. 1, 2014, clarifying the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design to account for newer technologies such as Segways as well as older devices such as golf cars that might be excluded under the “no motorized vehicles” rules set out for the trails.

Recognizing that, the new rules allow “other power-driven mobility devices” which the DOJ defines as “any mobility device powered by batteries, fuel, or other engines … that is used by individuals with mobility disabilities for the purpose of locomotion … designed to operate in areas without defined pedestrian routes, but that is not a wheelchair”.

Those devices are legal on areas without sidewalks, including alongside roadways, as well as on trails that otherwise would exclude motorized vehicles.

“A facility may be required to allow

a type of device that is generally prohibited when being used by someone without a disability when it is being used by a person who needs it because of a mobility disability,” the Civil Rights Division states. “For example, if golf cars are generally prohibited in a park, the park may be required to allow a golf car when it is being used because of a person’s mobility disability, unless there is a legitimate safety reason thah it cannot be accommodated.”

Hanson said he has just purchased a “Chinese Segway” manufactured

by Ninebot, the Chinese transportation robotics firm that recently bought out Dean Kamen’s Segway Personal Transporter firm. The Chinese version is lighter in weight and the handle detaches, making it easy to transport it in an automobile, Hanson said.

Hanson noted that he purchased his device through Segway of Northern New England in Concord to ensure he would have local service available through its Concord and Bedford service centers.

Marvelous Melvin Village Community Church Auction The Melvin Village Community Church will hold its annual auction on Sat., July 18 at 10 am. The auction is a much-anticipated favorite in the Lakes Region, with many fine items up for bid.

This year’s auction will offer an Old Town Canoe; four Red Sox game tickets, a 16-foot MFG motor boat, a hand-painted box by local artist Barbara Williams, a carved wooden bear, two brand new Lazy Boy recliners, custom-made bunk beds, a five-piece iron patio set, an 1889 framed broadside advertisement, a

1970 Baltimore Orioles World Series bat, antique furniture and prints, a 1930 Radiola radio and much more.

The fun continues on the following Saturday (July 25) with the annual flea market at the church, featuring a white elephant area, games, books, plants, clothing, baked goods, collectibles, music and more.
