A Grape Crushin’ Event at Winnipesaukee Winery Prussia. Intrigued, she began to do online research on wine making and took a seminar through the University of California and Cornell in New York.

She also visited wineries in Europe.

“I have a German cousin who told me that it would be hard to make wine in America!” she remembers with a smile. Always up for a challenge, Heidi proved the cousin wrong by starting to make wine. “I am still learning, but I have learned a lot!”

She uses an oak barrel aging process, which she says makes great wine. “The wine is in the barrels for up to three years.” Once she was set up, Heidi and her family began wine making in earnest. “When we got a

second tank in our house, we decided to do wine making commercially and built the building below the vineyard in Bristol. We did it for about five years commercially in the Newfound area and got good reviews.”

As the winemaking business grew, Heidi realized they would need more space. The Wolfeboro property meant a big move, and diving into a new business – the bed and breakfast, not to mention the antiques shop, but she was up for the challenge.

barn is a large white farmhouse, which has operated as the 1810 House Bed & Breakfast for many years. For years, the barn has served as a group antiques shop, filled with all kinds of great old items.

When Heidi and Christopher purchased the property recently, they continued to offer bed and breakfast in the farmhouse, which has already proven very popular. Antiques are still sold in the barn, and part of the barn space now also serves as a wine bar and tasting area.

“We want people to experience what a grape stomp is like,” Heidi goes on to say. “Stomping or crushing the grapes is the first step. Visitors can take selfies, videos and those who aren’t grape stomping, can cheer others on!”

Wine lovers may know of the couple from the Newfound Lake Vineyard, located near Wellington State Park in Bristol, NH (near Newfound Lake).

The Vineyard is well known for its very popular Wicked Good Red wine. Heidi explains that they had outgrown their Newfound location, and began to look for a larger property that would give them the acreage to grow more coldweather grapes. “We needed level land with good customer access. We also wanted more space for wine education.

We have four acres in Bristol and in Wolfeboro, we have about eight acres.”

Heidi von Götz Cogean, and her partner, Christopher Coache, know all about what it takes to make great wine and they have been perfecting wine making for over 15 years. They want to share a unique event with their guests and the public on October 7 and 8, when they will be holding a Grape Crushing Weekend.

“We will have tubs filled with grapes for grape stomping,” Heidi explains. “Those who are staying at our inn, the 1810 House which is next to the wine tasting and antique barn in Wolfeboro, can take part in the grape stomping as well as anyone brave enough to get their feet purple. For folks participating in the wine tasting, we will offer a special ‘barrel tasting’, a sample of young wine directly from the French oak barrel.”

Heidi and Christopher have certainly put the property, located at 458 Center Street in Wolfeboro, to good use. Locals and vacationers are likely familiar with the 1810 House and Antique Barn. Guests stop in often to do the wine tasting and to shop and learn more about the business. Heidi does wine tastings for guests at the large, wooden wine bar located in the back area of the barn.

The October 7 and 8 grape stomping will see four tons of red grapes from California offered for a traditional grape stomp. Heidi explains that normally, they use a grape crushing machine and de-stem the grapes as well. The chance to get in a vat and stomp grapes the old-fashioned way is for fun and to allow guests to experience part of the wine making process. Once the grapes are crushed and de-stemmed, they are put in tubs with yeast. This starts the fermentation process, which takes a number of days. Heidi will monitor the vats and use a large stainless-steel plunger to “push the cap down” as the process is known. This is done at least three times a day and she will monitor the mixture to make sure it is kept wet. As the sugar content in the grapes

declines, eaten by the yeast, a rough wine is born about a week later. It is all part of the process, which ends with the wine being aged for many months in the French oak barrels.

Heidi is always up for the challenge of trying new things, and recalls her father bringing her cranberries from the only bog on Newfound Lake to produce the berry in the area. He told her to make a wine with the cranberries, which she indeed did, along with a wine made from blueberries.

“We make a rose wine from a NH grown grape. The grape survives in temperatures of 30 below zero.” This, indeed, is the ultimate definition of the cold weather grapes that Heidi and Christopher grow.

“We will be planting root stock next spring; this will be two-year-old root stock. These are cold-weather grapes.

We won’t expect to see a harvest of grapes for about four years,” she says.

Wine tastings in the antique barn allow guests to sample and learn about four wines (usually white and sweet wines and a California red wine) and to keep the souvenir wine glass. The customer also gets a coupon for $2.00 off a bottle of wine.

Families in Transition’s Halloween Themed 5K Expands to Wolfeboro Families in Transition (FIT), a Concord, Manchester, Dover, and soon-to-be Wolfeboro, NH, based homeless services provider, will host its first Wicked FIT Run in Wolfeboro, on Saturday, September 30 at 10:30 am at the Abenaki Ski Area. The family friendly, costume-themed, 5K, will provide runners and walkers the opportunity to support FIT in their efforts of providing a home and hope to homeless families in the Governor Wentworth Regional School District.

“We’ve had such success with our Wicked FIT Run in Concord, that we decided to add a second location and bring the event to Wolfeboro,” said Maureen Beauregard, President and Founder of Families in Transition. “We love to see people come out in costume, participate in the race, and all the while know that they are doing their part to help those most in need in their own

community. There are students in this school district who are homeless and we’re hoping that this race will help us to raise awareness of the issue and raise money to do something about it.”

People are encouraged to create teams and dress in costume. Prizes will be awarded in several costume categories, as well as race finish times.

The cost to register, if done before noon on September 27, is $25 for adults over age 20, $15 for individuals aged 11-19, and free for kids under 10.

October Educational Programs at the Wright Museum A program focused on the Zimmerman Telegram, 1917, will be presented by Professor Douglas Wheeler at the Wright Museum of World War II in Wolfeboro on Tuesday, September 26 from 7 to 9 pm.

British Naval Intelligence’s interception decoding and ‘leaking’ of the famous Zimmermann telegram of 1917 became one of the principal factors and foreign policy catalysts which influenced the United States to enter World War I on the Allied side. This lecture will also show the significance of this secret intelligence operation in the earlier stages of contemporary signal warfare and how secret intelligence services build expertise in an effort to discover enemy plans and intentions. In addition, it is a case study in how intelligence services endeavored to manipulate “public opinion,” a new factor in warfare.

Dr. Douglas Wheeler has been a member of the History Department faculty at UNH, Durham since 1965 and continues to lecture for the NH Humanities Council, and Durham’s Active Retirement Association. He is the author of many articles and chapters and nine books. Wheeler served in U.S. Army Intelligence, 1963-65. He has been a consultant on international affairs for the Department of State and the C.I.A., analytical division.

The Middle East will be the topic of a lecture by Mohamed Defaa on Tuesday, October 10 from 7 to 8 pm. The term “Middle East” is a changing geopolitical concept.

Throughout recent history, this term referred to a political, a cultural, and a geographical region with no clear boundaries. Moreover, this concept

serves to generate stereotypes and misunderstanding. This presentation provides an analytical framework to understand the histories, social identities, and cultures behind this complex concept of “Middle East.”

Mohamed Defaa is the founder of Intelliducation. He is certified by the International Center for Educational and Cultural Consulting in Lyon, France. He earned an MA in Communication and Expression at the University Mohamed V in Rabat, Morocco, and a BA in French Language and Literature from the University Ibn Tofail in Kénitra, Morocco. Defaa has served as an assistant professor of Communication and Cultural Expression at the University Hassan the Second in Casablanca, Morocco, and a college instructor in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

He is a French and Arabic teacher at Merrimack High School and an Arabic instructor at Southern New Hampshire University. This program is funded by the New Hampshire Humanities Council and there is no admission charge.

“When Women Played Baseball: The Story of Margaret, Nellie, and Rose”, a lecture and book signing by author Barbara Gregorich, will take place on Tuesday, October 17 from 7 to 8 pm.

In 1934 three young women, still in their teens, played hardball on the last traveling Bloomer Girl baseball team. Their stories include abandonment, loss at sea, triumphs, world war and, always, baseball.

Margaret, Nellie, and Rose came from different backgrounds and had different reasons for playing baseball. When the season was over they followed different paths — two went on to serve in the WAVES and

the WACS during WW II, and one went on to play for the Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Baseball League. It is not wrong to say that playing baseball profoundly affected their lives and helped determine their futures.

Barbara Gregorich writes fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Her novel She’s on First was called “the best book that’s written on the idea of the first woman to play professional baseball,” and her nonfiction title, Women at Play: The Story of Women in Baseball, won the SABR-Macmillan Award for Best Baseball Research of the Year.

Tapply-Thompson Community Center 34th Annual Apple Festival!

On Saturday, October 7, the TapplyThompson Community Center (TTCC), located at 30 North Main Street in Bristol, will hold its 34th Annual Apple Festival. This year’s events include a Craft Fair from 9 am to 2 pm in the TTCC gym. The Apple Pie & Food Sale will include pies, apple crisp, fresh bread, home-baked beans, apple brownies, fresh applesauce and more.

Pies will sell for $10.00 a pie and are made on Friday, October 6 by area

residents who come together at the Center and peel, slice, roll and bake 300 apple baked goods. Volunteers for baking on Friday, October 6 are still welcome. If you can help out please call the TTCC at 603-744-2713.

By Barbara Neville Wilson It’s a beautiful day in the Lakes Region. The sun is warm, the sky is blue, the leaves have started to glow.

You’re finished work, the chores are done, you have a few hours before the sun sets. What to do? How about a quick hike up Mount Major, a peak that offers magnificent views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the White Mountains to the north?

You take scenic Route 11 south out of Alton or north from Gilford and after wending along a wooded twolane secondary road, you’re rewarded with broad open road and awe-striking views of Lake Winnipesaukee to the

west. Tiny islands and tinier boats float atop the deep blue expanse of our state’s largest lake. Take a deep breath and pause to take in the views.

This is why you’ve chosen to live in the Lakes Region. Or maybe it chose you. It seems that was the case for Mr. George F. Phippen in 1914, and Mr. Tom Roberts nearly a century later.

About four miles from Alton Bay— twice that from Gilford—the Mount Major parking lot appears on the east side of the road. Don’t be deterred if it’s full of cars. It is busy practically any time, especially in fall. The mountain has been a popular destination since the mid-1800s, and even more when

George F. Phippen bought 75 acres of it for $125 in 1914, apparently expressly for the purpose of encouraging hikers to enjoy the beauty of the lake.

Little is published about Mr. Phippen.

He may have owned a cottage at the Alton Bay Christian Conference Center Campground, and he was a year-round resident of Florida. For the purposes of your hike, though, you can probably just be grateful he had the foresight to buy the land for hikers’ use.

Wander over to the kiosk where the map of trails is posted. Although there are numerous trails—and reports of a friendly bushwhacker regularly building more—this map shows wellmarked routes up to the summit. The Main Trail is an easy, fairly short trail marked by blue blazes. It follows the wide old Clough Farm road for a mile before veering off on a trail through the woods. It’s moderate for the most part, though it does require a bit of a rock scramble as it approaches the summit.

A Mount Major fan who hikes it a few times a year confides that he may be a middle-aged guy with a paunch, but he can usually plan to make it to the Mount Major peak in an hour and 45 minutes.

If you’re looking for a challenge more in the Moderate range, you can choose the Brook Trail or the Boulder Loop.

Both are named aptly and are less than two miles long—if you are in average shape, plan a roundtrip outing of about four hours. The Brook Trail follows the Main Trail along the Farm Road for a mile before veering off. It crosses the

Minge Brook twice, and even with recent rains, the brook crossings are easy if you first look at your planned path strategically. Ascents can be steep at times, and it’s important to keep an eye out for the yellow blazes as several other trails cross the Brook Trail path.

The Boulder Loop, blazed orange, ascends from the north side of the parking lot, and is named for the final 100-yard boulder scramble at the summit. Having summered in West Alton as a child, and after a long career as a science teacher in Farmington and thousands of happy hours summiting the White Mountain peaks, he chose Mount Major and the Belknap Range as his retirement project. Mapping routes across the ridge, studying its history of quarry, logging and settlement first, he shared his findings and grew a new fan club of people interested in the mountains and their conservation. September 25, 2017 • Mt Major Continued from page 22 went so far in the early 2000s as to buy the tract of land at the Mount Major trailhead with his own funds to keep it from development; eventually it was joined with three other tracts to create the 1,000-acre Belknap Range Land.

The area is preserved in perpetuity for hiking, skiing, snowmobiling and other suitable outdoor activity.

Calling Roberts a “True Conservation Hero” in a 2015 blog post from the Forest Society, Brenda Charpentier reported that starting in 2013, the Society “worked with the Lakes Region Conservation Trust and the Belknap Range Conservation Coalition to raise funds to buy four private properties in the Belknap Range in order to conserve them and keep them open to the public. While the partners raised the money, Dave Roberts of Farmington…bought...the trailhead off the Mt. Major parking lot…in order to keep it off the open market until the funds could be raised. Long after the first three properties were purchased, legal red tape held up the piece that Roberts held.”

No matter which trail you choose, your intended goal is the summit of the 1,786-foot Mount Major with unparalleled views of the “Lake of shining waters,” a view treasured by thousands for hundreds of years. In his blog, “Outdoor Adventurers”, Steve Priest described his experience this way: “The granite laden summit overlooks beautiful Lake Winnipeasaukee {sic}.

Bay with an across the lake view of the town of Wolfboro {sic}. We take in the breath-takings sights of some of the 258 islands on the lake and its 182 mile shoreline…we just get enough taste of the beauty of this gem of New Hampshire.”

After your first “ahhh” intake of breath and awed scan of the panoramic view, you’ll notice a rock enclosure clutching the tiptop of the mount. Built of giant granite blocks, it resembles a structure for human habitation, yet it lacks roof and full walls. As you walk around it, you see blocks of granite strewn on the ground. This, Dave Roberts’ research tells us, is the remains of Mr. Phippen’s Hut. “It was intended to be a place where hikers could seek shelter from harsh weather, or perhaps spend the night in anticipation of viewing a spectacular dawn on the morrow. It was provided with a stone bench, a window to the south, and a door facing eastward.

It was roofed over and contained a small wood stove to provide for the relative comfort of any persons who might wish to use it, as the door was left unlocked. Sometime during its first winter, the fierce winter winds that blow across this completely exposed summit proved to be too much for the roof and it was blown off, ending up well down the mountainside,” Roberts’ wrote.

In 1926, Mr. Phippen had another roof built for the hut, engineering it carefully to withstand the mountain’s winds, but it, too, blew off only two years later. “The new roof lasted for two winters before it too was blown

down the mountainside by the spring of 1928. That roof has lain on a very rocky slope several hundred yards from here since that day, and considering its flight from the hut to that site and the fact that it has experienced over 70 years of harsh mountain weather, it is still in fairly good shape.”

The roof was never replaced but the hut withstood weather and hikes for decades “until one summer in the mid 1990’s, when some thoughtless soul(s) decided to entertain themselves by tearing many of the stone blocks off the walls, leaving them strewn in hapless piles at the base of the structure. On occasion, some folks more interested in restoration than destruction have

tried to replace some of the blocks, but it would take rather heroic efforts to restore the hut to anything like its earlier state. The hut still serves, in a modest way, the role Mr. Phippen had envisaged for it, as it is used during the colder months (even throughout the winter) by a few hardy folks who continue to climb the mountain even during its worst moods.”

After savoring the view and enjoying the trip back in history, choose another blaze as your torch on the way back down the mountain. Return to lake level and every day life refreshed and renewed. You know now why Mount Major beckons.

He’ll also discuss the economics of doing nothing versus active restoration practices and talk about how to deal with the problem of beech taking over after high-grading. Join the Wolfeboro Stamp Club!

By Sarah Wright Do you have a favorite type of stamp? Perhaps you like the Love stamps, holiday stamps, or stamps with famous people on them?

Stamp collecting has been one of the world’s most popular hobbies since the late 19th century. For some historic background, postage stamps were first issued by the United States government on July 1, 1847, in the denominations of five and 10 cents, with the use of stamps becoming mandatory in 1855. Each of these stamps generally featured the face or bust of an American president or another historically important statesman, such as Benjamin Franklin. However, once the post office realized, during the 1890s, that it could increase revenues by selling stamps as “collectibles,” it began issuing commemorative stamps.

As the years went on, the postal service introduced more specialized stamps, such as those for use with airmail, Zeppelin mail, registered mail, and certified mail. Postage due stamps were also created for the post office to stick to letters with insufficient postage to be paid by the recipient.

Collecting stamps is the perfect hobby for collectors, because there is a never-ending stream of new stamps from all different countries. While stamp collecting is popular among all ages, it’s very popular among children, who often continue the hobby as adults.

According to current Wolfeboro Stamp Club president, Warren Gould, it’s also a very affordable hobby, since many stamps cost as little as a nickel.

If you already collect stamps, you are in good company. Famous stamp collectors, or “philatelists” as collectors are known, include President Franklin Roosevelt; business magnate Warren Buffet; astronaut Henry Hartsfield; actors Gary Burghoff, James Earl Jones,

and Patrick Dempsey; author James Michener; explorer Jacques Cousteau; former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova; musicians John Lennon, Freddy Mercury, and Ron Wood; cartoonist Gary Trudeau; and French President Nicholas Sarkozy.

There are clubs for stamp enthusiasts all over the country. The Wolfeboro Stamp Club was started in 1997, by Denise Thayer. She and her husband, Richard, are still members of the club today, although Warren now presides over the meetings. Denise collects stamps by a particular engraver, and Richard likes printed stamps from engraved metal designs as well. Other collectors in the club might choose to collect stamps from a certain time period. Warren’s collection consists mainly of stamps from 1840 to 1950.

Cats are the most popular topical stamp among all philatelists, while other people focus on collecting stamps featuring topics such as sports, flowers, Olympics, ships, dolls, lighthouses, or birds. Even children like stamps and younger kids especially like collecting topical stamps.

Lots of stamp collectors choose to collect worldwide stamps or stamps from a specific country, focusing on France or Germany, for instance.

There are also commemorative stamps to honor a historic person or event; definitive stamps which are regularissue stamps printed by any country; and semi postal stamps that are sold at a premium to raise money for a specific charity or cause, like breast cancer research. You could also collect airmail stamps, postal stationery, or souvenir sheets. There are plenty of options!

Purchase a special album for storing your stamps, or buy any kind of plastic sleeve to protect your collection.

So what if you’d like to remove a stamp from an envelope? Traditional

stamps with water-activated gum on the backing could just be soaked in water, and then lifted off the envelope to dry out. In the 1990s, self-adhesive stamps appeared on the scene, which proved difficult and sometimes frustrating for collectors. While the American Philatelic Society recommends using a small amount of a solvent called Bestine, Warren has another solution.

“Spray some orange oil air freshener on it, and gently lift it off,” he says, “or just carefully cut around the stamp and leave the envelope attached to it.”

While most stamps are reasonably affordable, making it possible to create a great collection even with five cent stamps, rare stamps in good condition can bring in thousands of dollars. These stamps usually show up at auctions.

There are many reasons that a stamp may be considered valuable, and even if your stamp has been through the mail and therefore “cancelled” that’s not necessarily a bad thing. “It could be worth more,” says Warren, “depending on where it was stamped.”

Collectors all over the world buy and sell their stamps online.

According to Richard Thayer, people in China and Russia are showing an increasing interest in stamp collecting.

There are also stamp shows, held all around the country every year. The Moultonborough Lions Club hosted a

The Wolfeboro Stamp Club meets on the first Thursday of each month at All Saints Church on South Main Street in Wolfeboro from 6 to 8 pm. A typical meeting brings in about a dozen people looking to buy stamps or share their collections. “We sometimes get donations of stamps, too,” says Warren, “or someone will bring in some stamps looking for an estimate on their value.”

All this talk about stamps got me thinking about the kinds of stamps I’m drawn to. I usually try to purchase interesting stamps, even if they do just end up on bills. I looked at the list of release dates and designs for this year on the American Philatelic Society’s website and was delighted to see that some upcoming stamps will feature illustrations from The Snowy Day. This famous children’s book was on my shelf as a child, so I will be looking for those stamps next month when they come out.

Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce Laconia Carving Out Two Days for NH Pumpkin Festival The Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce announces NH Pumpkin Festival in downtown Laconia has expanded to two days this year beginning with a “sneak-peak” Friday the 13th of October.

“We are continually grateful for the support of our business community and local residents. Watching the collaboration of so many people working together to create ideas and make them happen is simply amazing. Each new idea carves a new experience that continues to help us grow this festival,” said Karmen Gifford, President of the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce.

The festival will open on Friday, October the 13 from 4 to 8 pm and continue on Saturday, October 14 from noon to 8 pm. Attendees will enjoy more of a street festival experience this year.

Festival organizers are focusing on pumpkins – lots of pumpkins! Back in April with the celebration of Earth Day, Children’s Dentistry and Kennell Orthodontics sponsored 10,000 packets of pumpkin seeds. The seeds were distributed to schools, businesses and residents throughout NH. Bank of New Hampshire hosted a press conference inviting school children to plant pumpkin seeds and began working with schools for children’s pumpkins that will be on display in the Bank of NH parking lot throughout the festival.

On Friday the 13th, the festival will feature an Official Carving Station.

Bring your carved jack-o-lantern with you or carve one at the festival. Carnival rides will be operating including a fun house, gigantic slide, kiddie motorcycle ride, bungee jump and climbing wall.

Gilford PTA Annual Fall “FUN”draiser The Gilford District PTA will be hosting their Annual Fall “FUN”draiser Saturday, October 14, at the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion (Meadowbrook) in Gilford from 5:30 to 10:30 pm. This event typically hosts around 125 community members and is a great chance to meet up with friends after a busy summer.

The event proceeds directly benefit their students, teachers, and schools.

The Gilford PTA’s latest goal is an ambitious one: They would like to raise much-needed funds to repair the de-

teriorating track. (They had originally hoped to set aside 1/3 of this cost in an attempt to help off set the burden to their schools, but Hannaford donated a whopping $20,000 toward track repairs. With this enormous boost they’ve decided they would like to give it the good old college try and raise the entire $75,000!

The track not only benefits all of the students in Gilford Middle and High School, but the community as a whole.

Get in on the Action with the Lakes Region Curling Association You have probably heard of the sport of curling. If you are intrigued by the game, now you can play an Olympic sport right here in the Lakes Region.

Curling, the sport that originated in medieval Scotland, will be getting bigtime television coverage come February 2018 during the Winter Olympics.

When everyone else is talking about curling, you can be playing as part of the Lakes Region Curling Association (LRCA).

LRCA leagues are for men and women of all ages and experience levels.

Participants can join individually, as couples, or as entire teams. The upcoming fall season runs for eight Sunday evenings from mid-October to mid-December at Pop Whalen Ice Arena in Wolfeboro. There’s no equipment to buy, and new members get an introduction to the basics of the game at a learn-to-curl session before the season begins. Registration for the fall season begins now.

LRCA curling experiences are designed for participants of all ages, for men and women, and for people of varied abilities. Participants in the LRCA’s fall league will be free to

organize their own teams of four to six members, but organizers will also create teams for individuals who do not have one already formed.

A game of curling consists of two four-member teams, with each team “throwing” (that is, sliding) eight polished granite stones toward a bullseye target known as “the house.” A game consists of six to ten “ends” during which players on the two teams alternate throwing two stones apiece.

While most of us are familiar with the classic sliding delivery in curling, players may also throw their stones using a special push stick that enables the player to walk towards the delivery point and slide a stone without the need to stoop.

Points are allocated to the team whose stones come to rest closest to the center of the house. A team is allowed to hit the opposing team’s stones in order to move them away from the center of the house. Consequently, curling, which has been described as “chess on ice,” is a game of strategy as well as dexterity.

The Gilford District PTA is a parent/ teacher organization serving all three schools in Gilford, NH. Comedy Musical at the Capitol Center for the Arts Menopause the Musical® returns to the Capitol Center for the Arts for shows at 2 pm and 5:30 pm on Sunday, October 22. The upbeat musical follows four women shopping for lingerie at a Bloomingdale’s sale. Science Center Purchases Mobility Scooters with Help of Grant The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness received a $6,000 grant from the Oleonda Jameson Trust for its Access for All project. This, coupled with a $1,400 discount from Lakeside Mobility & Scooter of Rochester, helped the Science Center purchase two new mobility scooters for visitors to access the live animal exhibit trail.

The new scooters replaced two others in use since 2010, which required frequent repairs and were not always available.

The Science Center makes getting nearer to nature accessible to all individuals. The live animal exhibit trail is accessible with an ADA recreational standard grade of 1 in 12. The trail is primarily packed gravel and pavement with some difficult spots due to loose gravel. The motorized scooters and non-motorized wheelchairs are available for visitors who need additional mobility support. People may also request other special accommodations in advance of their visit. Scooters and

wheelchairs are available to the public at no charge, by reservation, from May 1 through November 1 when trails are open.

“Squam Lakes Natural Science Center provides an environmental education experience that should be available to all individuals regardless of ability," said Mary Susan Leahy, Trustee of the Oleonda Jameson Trust. “The Oleonda Jameson Trust assists New Hampshire citizens and organizations who are unable to enjoy things ordinary citizens take for granted. We are pleased to provide this grant to help positively impact residents and visitors to our state.”

“We are very grateful to the Oleonda Jameson Trust for supporting the independence of our visitors to access the animal trail,” said Iain MacLeod, Executive Director of the Science Center.
