The Gilford Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a number of fall hikes for any adults looking for fresh air, fun, exercise and beautiful foliage on Tuesdays this fall. The scheduled hikes continue on Sept. 22 at Ramblin’ Vewe Farm in Gilford and September 29 at Locke’s Hill in Gilford.

Participants will gather 9 a.m. on

the scheduled Tuesdays at the Gilford Town Hall Lobby before departing for the hike. All interested participants must RSVP at least one day in advance to each trip. The cost of the hikes is $1 per person, per hike.

Dr. Rick Van de Poll – The Mushroom Expert

By Sarah Wright Moving to the Lakes Region of New Hampshire five years ago was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I count myself lucky to be surrounded by such natural beauty, and often take forest walks or day trips to explore new trails.

Many studies have shown that nature is important for our well being, decreasing stress and increasing positive feelings. Getting in touch with nature is just as important as protecting that nature for future generations—utilizing the land in a way that works in harmony with the surrounding ecology.

Dr. Rick Van de Poll grew up on a farm, and learned early on how to harness the natural resources of the land to facilitate the farm’s development and future progress.

Later, in college and grad school, he was further motivated to manage these resources to help land owners figure out what was on their land. Rick had noticed a trend in bad land use; people didn’t realize the damage they were doing like building in the wrong place, or heavily salting their driveways which produced damaging runoff. In fact, he wrote his dissertation about this review process of taking “inventory” of the land, a term he coined in 1985.

Towns have to consider the big picture when mapping out where to build commercial buildings, schools, or parks, keeping in mind a vision for the future. Rick helps towns preserve their natural resources while creating that vision. Developers hire Rick for a different reason—to figure out how to build while at the same time, pay the lowest cost in permits. Land trusts are looking for information to help with land stewardship, to conserve resources for future generations. They might ask Rick where walking trails would be most appropriate, with questions about timber and wildlife management.

Last, but certainly not least, are homeowners who usually have something specific in mind when they call Rick. One homeowner might want to know the best place to set up trails for horseback riding, while another might ask if a pond would work on their property, and how to get a permit for it.

At this point in his life, Rick has inventoried over 250,000 acres of land, and as a certified wetland scientist, he’s also done countless mapping assessments and procured permits involving wetlands. While he’s always had an interest in birds and plants, Rick began to note all the various mushrooms he was finding during his time in the woods.

Years ago, he learned the hard way that it isn’t always easy to identify what’s edible and what isn’t. In 1978, he was prompted to take his first mushroom class after ingesting a poisonous mushroom by mistake. It was a mushroom in the same family as the porcini mushroom, but it made him very sick. Today, Rick works with poison control of New Hampshire to help identify mushroom poisonings. Not surprisingly, most calls involve children under the age of four and dogs.

In his time exploring and conducting inventories, Rick has identified over 1500 mushrooms growing in New Hampshire. Considered a mushroom expert, he regularly gives walks and talks, to educate people about local fungi. Rick has found mushrooms in every color, ones with hexagonal patterns in the pores under their caps, and even ones that resemble deer antlers. If you Google mushroom images, you’ll

be amazed how they can differ in size, shape, and color. In fact, the largest mushroom ever recorded was over 100 pounds!

I asked Rick about rare mushrooms, and he said, “The rarest ones are highly specific to the habitat. For instance, there is one mushroom that only grows on the larvae of a certain type of moth.”

Rick also tells me that the role of fungi in nature is crucial to human life. That’s certainly something I never gave much thought to, but to simplify it: Plants are producers; they capture energy from the sun and build complex carbon compounds. Animals are consumers; they take in complex carbon compounds and use them for energy and materials. Most fungi are decomposers; fungi break down the complex carbon compounds that are part of living matter.

But we’re not the only ones who need mushrooms. Many animals rely on mushrooms to survive. Invertebrates like beetles, gnats, and flies feed on mushrooms and lay eggs in them.

Rodents, rabbits, deer, chipmunks, raccoons, turtles, and salamanders also eat mushrooms. Bears, being true connoisseurs, seek out truffles. Mushrooms are naturally part of Rick’s diet as well, and he regularly picks mushrooms to cook for dinner.

There is tremendous value in “the wild” and I asked Rick about how important it is to preserve our natural world for future generations. “We really need to do a better job in observing changes that we’re bringing about in our surroundings,” says Rick, “like changing acidity levels in the soil, weather patterns, and destruction of habitats.”

He encourages people to do whatever they can to help the environment.

Wakefield Opera House Hosts Moose Mountain Jazz Band On Saturday, Sept. 26, at 7 pm, the Wakefield Opera House Performing Arts Committee will host the Moose Mountain Jazz Band.

The Moose Mountain Jazz Band got started in the Brookfield/Wakefield area in August of 2001 when Lance MacLean was asked to put together a small three-piece group for a “Dixieland Night” at the Wakefield Historical Society’s Red School House.

The event was a complete success and many in the audience asked, “Where can we hear you play again?” Organizer Ed Morrison worked with Lance and several area musicians that wanted to get together and play Dixieland Jazz on a regular basis, to schedule a series of “Jazz parties”.

The Moose Mountain Jazz Band was formed in February of 2002 shortly after their first “Jazz Party.” The band

has been very active since, playing at least once a month throughout the year at concerts, private parties, parades, and fund-raising events and in area schools.

Dixieland Jazz has its roots in American history, drawing primarily on African and European sources. It is an ever-changing art form, created

just for the listener at the moment in time when the music is played. The incredible thing about jazz is that a lot of it is not rehearsed or written out, which makes every performance fresh and interesting to both the musicians and the listeners Come listen to the Moose Mountain Jazz Band at the Wakefield Opera

House in Sanbornville. Their music is happy, foot-tapping, rambunctious party jazz.

Country Estates of New Hampshire at Gilmanton Historical Society The final program of the 2015 Gilmanton Historical Society summer season will feature Exemplary Country Estates of New Hampshire, on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 pm at Old Town Hall in Gilmanton Iron Works.

In the early 20th century, the New Hampshire Board of Agriculture launched a program to boost the rural economy and promote tourism through the sale of abandoned farms to summer residents. Presenter Christina Ashjian focuses attention on some of the great country estates featured in the New

The Home Textiles exhibit will feature the many handicrafts that have been received on donation by Laconia Historical and Museum Society through the years, including crocheted works, hand-knit items, tatting, needlework including embroidery, crewel and needlepoint, weaving and looming,

quilting, hooked, braided and penny exhibit will cover the history of each of these items that were created for both practical purposes as well as decorative objects.

“We all have those special family handicrafts that bring back wonderful family memories,” says Kean. “I think this exhibition will inspire those fond memories for many in our community.”

The Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness is a great place for visitors of all ages, from young children to Senior citizens.

The month of October offers some fun and interesting programs at the Science Center, as well as the popular natural trail with live animal exhibits.

Staying Found: Finding Your Way With and Without a Map and Compass takes place on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 10 am to 12:30 pm. The program is geared for adults and families with children ages nine and over. Spend the morning trekking through local woodlands to uncover the basics of “how to find your way.” Through fun activities and challenges, participants will develop map, compass, and landscape observational skills culminating in successfully navigating the way “home” after being “lost.”

This program will be held offsite. Meet at the Science Center and caravan to nearby Plymouth. Wear sturdy shoes and dress for being outdoors and hiking at a moderate level both on and off trail. Reservations are required in advance.

Up Close to Animals is a great program for all ages, taking place on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4 and Oct. 10 and 11 at noon and 2 pm. Visitors meet live animals up close and learn about them from an experienced naturalist educator. These engaging talks at the amphitheater on the animal exhibit trail feature a variety of different animals, including birds like peregrine falcon, saw-whet

Halloween is great fun at the Science Center with Halloween Hoot N Howl on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 6 to 8 pm. Visitors will enjoy an eerily entertaining 40-minute guided tour around the Science Center grounds.

Trail walks feature live skits with a seasonal theme and depart every 10 minutes from 6 to 7:30 pm. Come in costume and dress suitably for outdoor weather. After the tour, visitors can warm up with Halloween games and tasty treats! Reservations are required in advance.

As colder weather approaches, many people love to feed the birds. The Do’s and Don’ts of Feeding the Birds will give you needed information on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 10 to 11:30 am. Feeding birds is one of the best gateways into nature study. Find out top methods to economically attract birds to your yard and how to avoid the pitfalls of attracting unwanted guests like squirrels, bears, and others. Learn how to make simple feeders and to best tailor your bird feeding station to the habitat of your yard. Reservations are required in advance.

Celebrating All Things Pumpkin at Spider Web Gardens During the first week of June 2015, Spider Web Gardens gave out free pumpkin plants with tips on how to grow a “whopper”! Customers were asked to grow their pumpkin and bring it in for a weigh-in at the end of the growing season.

Burke and Surette Folk Music Sept. 27 at Taylor The next program in the Taylor Community Music Series, sponsored

The concert will feature Susie Burke and David Surette, who have made a name for themselves as one of the finest acts on the lively New England folk scene. Judy Dean generously sponsors the performance.

Together since 1988, Burke and Surette have built a steady following for their own blend of contemporary,

traditional and original folk and acoustic music. Burke’s vocal style is at once stunning and heartfelt and is matched by Surette’s fluid fretwork.

Life Bridge to Celebrate 11 Years of Mentoring Local Youth For 11 years Life Bridge Inc. has been reaching out to youth in the Lakes Region with one-to-one mentoring services. On Thursday, Oct. 8, at Camp Brookwoods, located at 34 Camp Brookwoods Road in Alton, a Fall Fundraising Banquet will be held to celebrate mentoring successes and to raise funds for a fruitful future. An abundant buffet will be offered, including Oven Roasted Chicken Breasts, Sliced Roast Beef, Scalloped Potatoes au Gratin, Salad Bar, Vegetable Soup, rolls and Mixed Squash Bake, with Apple Tart and Vanilla Bean Ice Cream for dessert.

The evening will start with cheese, crackers and vegetables at 5:30 pm. All of this is offered for a suggest donation of $25.00 per person. In addition to the wonderful meal and an inspiring program, valuable donated items will be available for bidding at the silent auction.

The evening’s program is designed to recognize our faithful mentors, to raise awareness of the vital role Life Bridge plays in the lives of the youth of the Lakes Region and to encourage financial support for the coming year.

In addition, 10 percent of all money raised will be used as seed money for the new Life Bridge scholarship fund.

Life Bridge strives to give students hope and to lead them away from risky behaviors by bringing a trained mentor into their lives. The mentor spends a minimum of 90 minutes

a week of personal time with their mentee. Mentoring enables a student to develop responsible decision making skills, deeper relationships within their family, improves grades and attendance at school, and a potentially rewarding journey into the future as a responsible young adult in their community.

Parents and school administrators are very involved and helpful as Life Bridge provides structure and oversight of the mentoring matches.

The demand for mentors from parents and school professionals is growing by leaps and bounds – the need has never been greater!

An analysis of the Life Bridge program by the Carsey Institute of the University of New Hampshire highlights its achievements. For example, overall academic performance was improved by 17 percent, positive engagement in extra-curricular activities, better relationships with other students and the ability to manage stress improved by 33 percent. There is no doubt that Life Bridge has made a huge difference in the lives of their mentees. Currently there are approximately 30 mentor/ mentee matches in the Lakes Region.

The Northern Railroad Kenneth Cushing, author and historian, will offer a presentation on the history of the Northern Railroad on Friday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 pm at the South Danbury Christian Church located at 1411 US Rte. 4, Danbury, NH. Ken will discuss the history of the trains that went through Danbury, surrounding towns and throughout the state of NH, such as the Peanut, the New Englander, the Ambassador, the Boston & Maine, and trains that ran from Concord to White River Junction.

The Northern Railroad was a critical component in the mid-19th century and transported goods throughout the state. Milk trains were a common sight and extensive farming utilized the trains to ship produce, wool and dairy products. Other industries that

depended on trains included lumber operations, the exporting of garnet and other minerals and ice cut from local lakes and transported to Boston, MA. The Northern Railroad also transported tourists to local destinations. Ken’s presentation will include details on when the Northern Railroad was chartered in 1844 to its abandonment in 1995, railroad stations that it served, and some national disasters and train wrecks on the line.

Historical photographs of the trains will be on display during the program and Ken’s presentation includes a PowerPoint presentation. The program is free to the public. Light refreshments and snacks will be served. Donations are welcome; for more information call 768-3603.
