New Hampshire Boat Museum Readies for 9th Biennial Boat Race The New Hampshire Boat Museum is preparing for the ninth biennial Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta to be held on Wolfeboro Bay on Lake Winnipesaukee September 18 and 19.

The two-day event will offer the public the thrilling spectacle of vintage triple cockpits, outboards, Gold Cup racers, skiffs, and hydroplanes running in heats around a one-mile course.

The Wolfeboro Regatta is regarded as one of the best venues on the vintage race boat circuit. Race crews are signed up to attend from as far away as Florida and western Canada. It is anticipated that over 40 crews will be present this year.

Since its inception, the event has expanded to include daytime and evening activities for the race crews and public.

The heats will occur on Friday and Saturday from 8 am to 5 pm, with over 40 vintage race boats performing demonstration laps on a one-mile oval course on the Bay. The public is invited to see and hear these boats run from the Wolfeboro Town Docks during these days. There is no charge to watch the heats from the docks.

For those wishing to view the action up close from the water, the Winnipesaukee Belle is offering rides departing at approximately 9:20 am, 1:20 pm and 2:40 pm. The cost for these water tours is $12 per person. People are encouraged to make reservations in advance for any of the Winnipesaukee Belle cruises at www.nhbm.org or by calling the New Hampshire Boat Museum at

For those more adventurous, many of the race boat drivers are donating rides on their race boats with the proceeds going to the New Hampshire Boat Museum. The cost for these charity rides will range from $100 to $300, depending on the chosen boat. To view the boats which are giving charity rides, visit the Regatta section of the Museum’s website at www.nhbm.org.

Those attending the Regatta will be given the opportunity to view the crew staging area also known as the Hot Pits.

This secured area will be open to the public only between heats, but will allow spectators the opportunity to meet drivers and crew and see the boats up close.

public. The events include a Thursday, Sept. 17 cookout at the Wolfetrap Grill and Raw Bar; a Friday, Sept. 18 reception at the New Hampshire Boat Museum; and a Saturday, Sept. 19 Awards Banquet at the Barn at the Inn on Main.

The well-planned event requires a lot of coordination and collaboration with the American Power Boat Association, State of New Hampshire Marine Patrol, Town of Wolfeboro and the support of the community. Over 100 volunteers fill many stations, including registration, hot pits, parking, set-up and clean up to name a few. The New Hampshire Boat Museum is open to the public daily through Monday, Oct. 12 from 10 am to 4 pm, Monday through Saturday, and Sunday from noon to 4 pm.

The Museum is a not-for-profit institution focusing on New Hampshire’s boating and fresh water heritage. It is located at 399 Center Street, Wolfeboro Falls, two miles from downtown Wolfeboro in the former Allen “A” Resort dance hall. Poetry Reading at Eagle Pond Authors’ Series Award-winning American poet Frank Bidart will be the featured poet at the Smith Recital Hall in the Silver Center at Plymouth State University (PSU) at 7 pm on Thursday, Sept. 17, under the auspices of the Eagle Pond Authors’ Series.

Bidart has published 10 poetry collections since 1973, including his latest, Metaphysical Dog (2013), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award and was a National Book Award finalist.

While he originally aspired toward acting and directing, Bidart says he found in poetry “the potential to encompass a wide range of subjects.” He holds a B.A. in English from the University of California at Riverside and an A.M. from Harvard University. He is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities and Professor of English at Wellesley College, and also has taught at Brandeis University.

Reviewers comment on Bidart’s unusual typography and the liberties he takes with punctuation and capitalization, which he explained in a 1983 interview with Mark Halliday, “allows me to ‘lay out’ the bones of a sentence visually, spatially, so that the reader can see the pauses, emphases, urgencies and languors in the voice.”

Appraising Bidart’s second book of poetry, The Book of the Body, Helen Vendler commented that Bidart’s method was not narrative. “…Unlike the seamless dramatic narratives we

are used to, his are spliced together, as harrowing bits of speech—an anecdote, a reminiscence, a doctor’s journal notes, a letter, an analogy— follow each other in a cinematic progression,” she says. Former U.S. Poet Laureate Louise Gluck has said of Bidart’s work, “…Bidart has patiently amassed as profound and original a body of work as any now being written in this country.”

Now in its 18th year, the Eagle Pond Authors’ Series is a tribute to Donald Hall, one of the nation’s most beloved poets and authors. Hall remains the heart and soul of the series and is instrumental in bringing nationally and internationally revered poets to the PSU campus.

Hall will be on hand to introduce Bidart, and both will stay after the reading for an author’s reception and book signing. Hall will sign copies of his bestselling new book, Essays After Eighty.

The next reader in the series will be Fanny Howe on October 29 at 7 pm.

Victorian Mourning Program Linda Salatiello and Evelyn Auger will present The Victorians: A Morbid Taste for Mourning at 7 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at the Parish Hall of St. Mark’s Church in Ashland.

The two presenters will be dressed in “widow’s weeds”, the mourning clothing of the period.

Salatiello and Auger will explain Victorian mourning customs and rituals, including the significance and symbolism of mourning dress, jewelry, prints, correspondence and burial

practices, as well as the role Queen Victoria played in the elaboration of mourning customs after the death of her husband Prince Albert. Some of these rituals are still in use today.

This free public program is sponsored by the Ashland Historical Society, which will also serve refreshments. The Parish Hall is located on the east side of Highland Street, between St. Mark’s Church and the Ashland Community Center, in Ashland village.

Using Acrylics in Unconventional Ways The Lakes Region Art Association will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, Sept. 21 at the Woodside Building Conference Center at the Taylor Community, 435 Union Avenue, Laconia.

The meeting begins at 7 pm.

At this meeting, Meredith artist, Marilee Sundius will share some techniques that she has developed while testing new mediums and trying to “loosen up” her style. She will also have samples of finished work.

In her journey, Sundius has explored different ways to move acrylic paint around the canvas. She uses mediums, tools and even her hands, all of which have led to some wonderful floral cre-

ations. The shapes that are created by the splattering and dripping make the process a puzzle to solve.

A graphic designer and illustrator, Marilee has operated Sundius Design for 15 years. Her personal and commissioned work reflects a variety of subjects both human and animal and renders them in black and white graphite or colored pencil.

What’s New at The Art Place in Wolfeboro

By Sarah Wright Autumn is in the air, and soon the leaves will be putting on their annual color show.

However, there is a way to get your color fix earlier—by viewing the beautiful art on display at The Art Place in downtown Wolfeboro.

The Art Place represents local and New England artists, and their latest gallery show features the oil paintings of Lauren Sansaricq and Erik Koeppel. The artists have painted captivating mountain and lake scenes in the style of The Hudson River School and the White Mountain School of Art. Anyone who loves The White Mountains will feel transported there through the majestic beauty that Erik and Lauren have captured on canvas.

Although Erik Koeppel and Lauren Sansaricq are young painters, they’ve both been teaching artists and students from Hudson River Fellows for four years in the White Mountains. Their focus is on the French style of painting know as en plein air or “in the open air”, which places the artist directly in nature. “Being in nature is a very transcendental experience,” says Lauren. “To me, nature is a portal to higher spiritual and philosophical thought.”

Erik also takes inspiration from the Italian masters. He began his study of painting by copying these great artists before developing a portfolio of his own.

Erik’s work has since been exhibited and collected internationally. and his pieces hung next to well-known artists including Thomas Cole, Winslow Homer and Edgar Degas.

Out into the Bay - Peter Ferber Another current show on display features “found and ground” artwork by Corina Willette. The pieces, some of which have a fabric background, were created while Corina was in the Philippines. She used found objects to grind her pigments, like eggs, sand, charcoal, and dirt, and used them to create beautiful still lifes of shells. Come to the gallery to see these amazing pieces, along with Corina’s many watercolor animal miniatures.

The Art Place is also the only gallery that features original paintings by the ever popular and talented Peter Ferber.

They also sell numerous prints, including his latest work “Out into the Bay.” You’ll feel like you’re standing on the bridge on Main Street, taking in the beautiful view of Wolfeboro Bay. Customers can also purchase prints of the 2015 Boat Show poster by Peter that features a 1930s Wolfeboro train station with train, wooden boats in the foreground, and antique cars.

If you’re not yet familiar with Peter Ferber, his paintings are inspired by the rural New Hampshire landscape that he

first experienced as a child spending his summers in Wolfeboro. Simple things like the evening light sparkling across a lake, the purity of a white barn in the snow, and the patina of a weathered boathouse, warm Peter’s heart. His illustrations have appeared in national magazines as well as in books. He’s also exhibited in many shows throughout New England and the Midwest, and he’s had more than 40 reproductions made of his work.

Other than supporting local artists, the gallery also provides complete custom framing services. Owner of The Art Place, Barbara Gibbs, has been there for 34 years. She says, “I enjoy working with people, and matching art to their tastes. I also love working with color, and finding the right frame for a print.”

Barbara tells me that the laser-cut, “reverse relief ” wood charts sold at the gallery is very popular with customers.

The maps include depth measurements and feature popular local destinations like Lake Winnipesaukee, Boston Harbor, Sebago Lake in Maine, and Cape Cod,

among others.

The Art Walk events held on the last Friday of the month through December are popular and well attended. Hosted by the Governor Wentworth Arts Council (GWAC), the Art Walk is a self-guided tour of galleries and other art locations in Wolfeboro including The Studio Gallery, The Kalled Gallery, The Art Place, Artisans Corner, The Sandy Martin Gallery, Winnipesaukee Chocolates, and The Connelly Gallery as well as Northeastern Ballet Theatre Studio. For October, November, and December, GWAC members’ art will be housed at The Wolfeboro Inn. Promotional rack cards for The Art Walk are available at any Wolfeboro gallery, the Chamber of Commerce, and select retail locations. The cards feature a map along with a list of the participants, and contact information. The next Art Walk, scheduled for October 30 from 5 to 8 pm., will coincide with the Robin Cornwell opening at The Art Place. Robin’s very colorful paintings on bark and other backgrounds, is in a style similar to batik painting.

Take some time this upcoming fall season to expose yourself to some new art, and you may find that the leaves outside have some competition.

Pumpkin Fest Means Lots of Pumpkin Planning

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Imagine over 30,000 pumpkins aglow in downtown Laconia. Now imagine over 30,000 to 40,000 guests in Laconia to enjoy the 2015 Pumpkin Festival that will light up the area in a very family-friendly way with a full day of events…and of course, carved pumpkins!

The 2015 Pumpkin Festival is coming to downtown Laconia on October 24 and promises to bring an all-things-pumpkin related day of fun. The event is unique, there is no doubt about it, and the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce, guided by executive director Karmen Gifford, has largely spearheaded components of the Festival.

“We are trying to engage the community, because this is certainly a very local event,” explains Gifford.

She and the Chamber staff have been working for weeks on all the logistics of the event, which definitely requires hours and hours of pre-planning.

Ruth Sterling and Let It Shine organize the event. The history of the festival is about community and bringing a fun day to the people with no ulterior motive to make money for any purpose. According to www. pumpkinfestival2015.org, “The event started as a Harvest Festival in 1991 (in Keene, NH)…as the community center’s heart got healthier, fame sprouted. The invitation to simply carve a pumpkin to help break a World Record appealed to many. And, when

people arrived in downtown Keene and saw the Main Street filled with shimmering pumpkins smiling as they sat cheek-to-cheek on scaffolding towers, milk crates and ladders—well, they were blown away…the Pumpkin Festival has been broadcasting to the world what can happen when people come together for no other purpose than making magic happen. The Festival, unlike most other Festivals, has no ulterior motives. It is not about making money, amassing funds for charity, selling stuff, or trying to get votes.

The heart of the Pumpkin Festival lies in the pumpkins. The meaning of the Pumpkin Festival lies in everyone’s participation…after Pfest 2010, the festival was saved from demise by a new group of volunteers led by Ruth Sterling…Let it Shine, Inc. earned nonprofit status on October 31, 2011

(Halloween).”

After years of presenting the Festival in Keene, this year the event has moved to Laconia, where Let It Shine encourages visitors and residents to “Get out there and join your neighbors, businesses, schools, volunteers, organizations and residents who are knee-deep in pumpkin guts and glory.

The spotlight is on! Revel in it! Carve a pumpkin, which will represent you in this massive heart-felt effort. Make your pumpkin personal by carving your name, a special date, message to a loved one, logo or important symbol.

Register it at a log-in station, then walk around and find the perfect location for your creation. Check out the incredible glowing pumpkin creativity.”

What will visitors see and be able to enjoy during Pumpkin Fest?

“First of all,” says Gifford, “we will

have lots and lots of parking, which will be within a mile of the downtown Laconia area. No cars will be allowed in the downtown area; we have identified 11,000 parking spaces with shuttle service and we are finalizing parking this week.”

Those that come to Pumpkin Fest indeed will have no need to worry about where to park or having to walk a long distance to arrive at the activity.

Watch the event website for parking information in the coming weeks, and no matter what direction you come from, there will be plenty of parking and a shuttle service to get you to the downtown pumpkin fun.

There are lots of other ways to be involved as well. Farms are donating pumpkins for area school children to carve for the huge pumpkin displays.

Welcome Centers will be set up and volunteers are needed to check in the pumpkins that are brought by the public. “It’s a big process to get all the pumpkins registered,” Gifford comments.

She stresses that the event is not a

show, but rather everybody’s festival and a way to be involved in the community. “For example, Larry Frates, a resident and well-known local artist and the owner of Frates Creative Arts Center, on Canal Street in downtown Laconia, is really embracing the event and doing a lot of fun things the day of the Festival.”

Pumpkins will be on display all over the downtown area and figuring out those locations was in itself a big task.

“We expect over 30,000 pumpkins,” Gifford says. “We are aiming to beat the world record. There will be a tower set up by Veteran’s Square that holds 1,000 pumpkins. It is a steel tower and to give you an idea of its size, it is just three feet shorter than the Green Monster in Fenway Park!”

over the downtown in Rotary Park, at the Laconia Library, in area parks – just about any spot where there is grassy display space.

“We start to light the pumpkins at 4:30 in the afternoon on October 24 and it takes about two hours to light all of them. By 6:30 all the pumpkins are lit,” says Gifford.

The sight of all those pumpkins glowing in the evening is quite a beautiful happening and Gifford adds that even if it should rain on the day of the Festival, the glowing pumpkins take on an added shimmer in the rain.

During the day of Pumpkin Festival, a lot of entertainment is planned for the downtown area. “We have about 80 vendors signed up,” Gifford explains.

“There will be all sorts of food, such as Japanese food, fried Oreos, chowders, pumpkin ice cream and more, and quality craft vendors with things such as hand-blown glass for example.”

A parade will wind through downtown Laconia with the only motorized vehicle allowed in the area the famed Pumpkin Coach from Storyland in Glen, New Hampshire. The parade will offer participants in full costume and it kicks off at 12:30 pm.

The schedule for the day includes: 8:30 am 5 and 10K race on the WOW Trail; 10 am Festival opening; 12:30 pm parade; 2 to 5 pm Pumpkin Bowling at Bank of NH; 4 pm pumpkin lighting begins; 6:50 pm world pumpkin record attempt; 8 pm pumpkin count announced; 8:30 pm Festival closes; 8:40 pm Pumpkin Dump Derby.

Locations such as the Belknap Mill on Beacon Street East will offer haunted

experiences as well.

Just what is the Pumpkin Dump Derby? Gifford laughs as she explains, “It is a great way to clean up all the pumpkins after the Festival. There are three teams, and Shipyard Brewery sponsors the dump. The whole Festival area will be zoned and each group is assigned to clean up the pumpkins in their zone. The group that finishes first wins $1,000 and the other groups get prizes as well.”

This is a huge composting effort that is well planned to ensure the event does not leave any pumpkins behind after the Festival.

The logistics of Pumpkin Festival are surely causing Gifford and her team to think pumpkins, talk pumpkins…and probably even dream about pumpkins at night! All the efforts will bring a wonderful community event to the Lakes Region with an influx of visitors at a time of year when it is usually rather quiet in the area.

It is good for business, indeed, but ask Gifford or Let It Shine and they will tell you the original intent of Pumpkin Festival was to offer a glowing gift to the community first and foremost. With all the hard work of those involved as Pumpkin Festival comes to Laconia, giving to the community is still the goal.

Wright Museum Announces 50% Off Admission The Wright Museum of WWII in Wolfeboro will offer 50% off admission to each individual that brings in three canned goods or non-perishable food items until October 31, 2015. All of the food collected will be donated to Wolfeboro’s L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry to assist in their efforts to provide a wonderful Thanksgiving for those less fortunate. The Food Pantry serves over 160 families on the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday weeks.

The Wright Museum also will act as a collection point for anyone who wishes to donate canned food without visiting the Museum. A collection box for canned food donations will be placed outside the Museum entrance for those not visiting the Museum. The Food Pantry is especially in need of canned

foods such as soup, pasta, vegetables, tuna, and canned meats.

The Food Pantry was founded in 1985 and is a 501 (c) (3) organization whose goal is to provide assistance to families in need.

Help the Wright Museum and the L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry make this a Thanksgiving to remember for everyone in the Wolfeboro Community.

Bring your donations to the Wright through October 31.

Morale Music The Wright Museum in Wolfeboro will host the next session of the “Ron Goodgame and Donna Canney 2015 Educational Programming” on Tuesday, Sept. 15, with a program titled Popular Music During WWII: Using Propaganda to Boost Morale. World War II brought about a government-sponsored drive to unify the country and increase the morale of civilians on the home front and of soldiers, sailors and Marines abroad.

Over 2,000 songs relating to the war and home front efforts were written

with these two goals in mind.

Using 35 recording excerpts – some well known and others obscure – Knickerbocker will explore the historical era and the changes this government-sponsored music wrought in American culture.

Parade of Homes is Coming The Lakes Region Builders and Remodelers Association (LRBRA) present the annual Fall Parade of Homes the weekend of October 1012. The event is a tradition that began in New Hampshire in 2007 and has continued to grow each year and shifted from a statewide tour to a Lakes and Mountains Region event.

Tickets for the Parade of Homes can be purchased at the first house you visit. One ticket allows entry into all of the homes on the tour and the cost is just $10 per person. Children age 12 and under are free. A comprehensive Parade Guidebook will be handed out at each of the homes featuring all of the homes, with graphics, descriptions, maps and local sponsors of the event.

NH Poetry Out Loud Program Registration Registration is open for New Hampshire high schools wishing to participate in the 2016 New Hampshire Poetry Out Loud competition. This will be the program’s 11th year, both in New Hampshire and nationally.

A program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage.

Participants are judged on the quality of their presentation, accuracy in reciting the poem and its difficulty. Approximately 10,000 students from 37 New Hampshire high schools participated in the 2015 New Hampshire Poetry Out Loud program.

Each year, New Hampshire’s classroom champions compete to represent their high school at four regional, semifinal competitions; semi-final winners then participate in March’s state championship. The state champion travels to Washington, D.C. for the national finals,

where more than $50,000 in college scholarships and prizes is awarded to the top finishers.

New Hampshire’s Poetry Out Loud program is managed by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts with the support of the Putnam Foundation – a donor-advised fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation – and the New Hampshire Writer’s Project. Other partners include Opus Advisors, the Poetry Society of New Hampshire, the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire, the New Hampshire Institute of Art and the Frost Place. Registration will be open to up to 40 New Hampshire high schools. Home-schooled students are also welcome to join through their local school or by creating a regional group.
