Camp Resilience Serves Wounded Vets

By Sarah Wright Caring for veterans is a hot topic in this country, and many people feel that more should be done for those who put their lives on the line for our freedoms.

One group in the Lakes Region has decided to do just that. In 2014, The Patriot Resilient Leadership Institute or PRLI, announced its formation. It was the goal of Kurt Webber, along with other New Hampshire veterans and concerned citizens to provide therapeutic retreats to help wounded veterans improve their lives, free of charge. There are lots of other programs for veterans that include sports activities to bring vets together, but Camp Resilience is a more holistic program that combines those types of activities with life skills that will continue to help vets when they return home.

Camp Resilience is based in Gilford, and the location idea came from a classmate of Kurt’s at West Point who often went skiing in the Lakes Region.

Where better to have a retreat than in the beautiful state of New Hampshire, with so many options for outdoor activities?

Research shows that the most effective therapy for veterans is group therapy, or peer-based therapy.

At Camp Resilience, veterans with serious injuries like limb amputations, brain injuries, or post-traumatic stress disorder, can regain confidence together, through fun and sometimes challenging activities. The retreats also focus on everything from finding

meaning and purpose in life, developing strong relationships, and overcoming potentially destructive behaviors, to learning financial management, job search skills, and entrepreneurial skills.

Guests stay at the Gunstock Inn or the Fireside Inn, two local businesses happy to help out PRLI’s cause. Kurt is grateful that many businesses and associates are working together to make Camp Resilience a success. It’s all volunteers at this point, but he’s hoping to hire a paid staff of retired military in the near future, and also offer more sessions per year.

year for groups of 10 to 12 veterans. To date, they’ve served 137 vets, and some of those were repeat guests. Retreats are held in every season, and Kurt likes to start with easy activities, working up to more challenging endeavors.

In the wintertime, that might mean beginning with a short snowshoe hike, cross country skiing, and then downhill skiing at Gunstock Resort. In the spring, summer, and fall, activities could include sailing with the Lake Winnipesaukee Sailing Association, hiking, boating, or fishing.

One of Kurt’s favorite retreat activities is the Aerial Treetop Adventures

obstacle course at Gunstock Mountain Resort. There’s no better way to push your limits and build self-confidence, while also cheering on your fellow vets through the increasingly challenging course. Another favorite retreat activity of Kurt’s is kayaking on the Merrymeeting River. “Everyone enjoys the kayaking trip,” says Kurt, “and Vicki at River Run Deli in Alton generously helps us out with kayaks.”

Camp Resilience is multigenerational, bringing vets together from all stages in life. To help those veterans with physical disabilities participate, PRLI has worked with Northeast Passage, an adaptive sports program at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. As for the therapy sessions, some of the group therapy is run by a clinical psychologist, who is also a board member of PRLI. The camp has formed many other partnerships.

Elizabeth White, a dietician at LRGHealthcare has stepped in to teach vets about cooking and mindful eating.

Being a retired Army officer himself, Kurt has also recruited three- and fourstar generals to help as well. “The Army has a great resiliency program,” says Kurt, “and some of their coordinators have come to help out.

“There’s a large demand for programs like Camp Resilience,” Kurt continues. “We work closely with the VA, and they send vets our way.”

Studio Two Bringing Beatles Sound to Cate Park The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand summer concert series draws to a close as the unofficial end of the summer comes to Wolfeboro on Labor Day weekend.

The final band in the summer concert series is a new one to Cate Park, as Studio Two makes its debut in the bandstand on Saturday, September 3.

Studio Two is hailed by The British Beer Company as New England’s Best Beatles tribute band, and unlike many Beatles tribute bands, does not try to deliver the entire Beatles catalog in its two-hour show.

Instead, Studio Two concentrates on what are some of the most exciting and fun times in the Beatles’ career, the club and touring years.

Those were the years when many people saw the Beatles play, the years where the band crafted their sound and their stage performance, and the years where they took the world by storm and changed everything.

In other words, the songs that Studio Two performs come from the pre-Sgt. Pepper era.

The band features graduates from Berklee College of Music, who met in a “town slightly west of Liverpool,” better known as Milford. They are experienced musicians of today’s generation and are dedicated to preserving the memory and the fan culture of the Beatles generation.

Studio Two not only recreates the Beatles’ music, but also recreates the appearance, instruments, and onstage banter, and brings people to the dance

floor with the sounds of the Fab Four.

The band consists of Stephen Murray (John Lennon), Al Francis (Paul McCartney), Robert Murray (George Harrison) and Justin Fyfe (Ringo Starr).

The band has performed at numerous large and small venues around New England. They maintain a full schedule, performing 21 dates in August alone, including gigs in Walpole, MA, Acton, MA, Liverpool, NY, Belmont,

Before the boys from Liverpool were famous, before they took the world by storm—that is the experience of Studio Two. The band offers a musical experience that can be enjoyed by audiences of all ages.

The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand present the summer concert series for free every Saturday night during the months of July and August, and this year, one weekend in September as well. While the concerts are free to the general public, the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand will pass buckets at intermission to help support the concert series.

The concert will begin at 7 pm in Cate Park, weather permitting. If rain is in the forecast, the concert will be cancelled. If the concert is cancelled, there will be a sign posted at the entrance to the park near the town docks and updates will be posted at www.wolfeborobandstand.org.

guided through the sign-in process, so they know what to do when they arrive home. Kurt tells me that many vets continue to hang out together, thanks to this part of the program.

Retreats at Camp Resilience run for four days and three nights, usually from Tuesday to Friday or Monday to Thursday. Attending the retreat is free; vets pay a $75 application fee to hold their place, but the money is refunded to them when they arrive. Veterans are currently responsible for their own transportation to and from Gilford, but Kurt is hoping to cover that cost in the future as the organization grows.

• Camp Continued from page 3 PRLI has also started scheduling more focused retreats, based on specific needs, like the upcoming retreat for those who’ve suffered sexual trauma in the military, and a retreat for those with PTSD. There have also been women’s sessions and one for couples this year.

Another option that wounded veterans can choose is an Equine Therapy retreat. Board member Dave Ferruolo is a former Navy Seal who also specializes in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. Veterans who sign up for this session will build a relationship with a horse by caring for it and earning its trust. This is not horseback riding, but a bonding experience for vets. Most of these sessions are held with Theresa at the Live and Let Live Farm in Chichester. The farm is an animal shelter that also rescues and rehabilitates wounded animals, and it’s

proven to be therapeutic for a wounded vet to care for a wounded horse. It’s a special bond.

So what happens when a veteran gets back home? PRLI wanted to find a way for the support to continue long after the retreat ended. Not many programs

The Rotary Club of Wolfeboro recently presented a scholarship check for $600 to help fund the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s Youth Boat Building Scholarship Fund.

Their donation allows young people ages 12 and up the opportunity to build their own canoe in the annual Youth Boat Building Program of the New Hampshire Boat Museum held in early August. Barbara Neville Wilson Walk into Susan Weeks’ Tuftonboro kitchen, and you see immediately that here lives a serious cook. Susan has plenty of counter space, a deep sink, large drawer storage, and a new induction stove in its maiden canning season.

When I arrive, that stove hosts a gargantuan stainless canning pot and a smaller stockpot to its left. Susan brings a large Tupperware from the ’fridge in the garage. It holds zucchini relish ingredients, which she prepared the day before. She used an industrial strength food processor to chop the fresh ingredients picked from her own garden: zucchini, onion and both green and red peppers, then she added mustard and celery seed, sprinkled it with salt, topped it with ice, covered it and let it steep overnight. “It’s just the process of getting the water out” of the vegetables, she says.

Although she’s been canning since childhood, Susan constantly seeks ways to work more efficiently. Just recently, she discovered the ice trick that allows the timing between preparing ingredients and cooking the relish to

be more flexible. And the purchase of new cups and spoons has streamlined measuring. “I don’t know how I lived without them…how many teaspoons in a tablespoon?” She answers, “Three.”

No need to measure each teaspoon and lose track mid-recipe.

Work smarter, not harder.

Susan opens a deep drawer that reveals a broad selection of colanders and sieves for all her different projects.

Her brother, who works for Fred E. Varney (kitchen company), designed her kitchen. If equipment is all in one place and accessible, projects seem less onerous. She drains the zucchini mixture, pours it into the stockpot, and then adds vinegar and sugar. Knowing I once canned, she is relieved. “Good, you’re not going to be shocked by the amount of sugar,” she says.

Everyone wants this relish. She tries to make at least 40 quarts a year for friends and family. She shows me two shopping bags of wrapped jars and chuckles. At last week’s Tuftonboro Historical Society sale, friends returned the jars. “Do people return jars to be nice, or do they return jars to get refills?” I ask. Both, she says, but chuckles again as she looks pointedly at one bag. This one returns them to get

The bright colors of fresh-from-the-garden vegetables make Susan Weeks’ relish a treat for the eye and the palate. refills, she admits.

The zucchini relish on the stove is a recipe from the 1989 The Ball Blue Book. Like most serious canners, Susan has a whole collection of Blue Books. “Everyone needs the Ball Blue Book,” says Susan. “You can’t throw any away” and “when you go to a yard sale and see one, you pick it up. When you have a recipe you like, you stick to it.”

The Ball Blue Book has been a staple for canners since before 1913. The

canner’s Bible, it often finds itself on the shelf next to recipe books put out by non-profits and women’s groups of yore. After she cans the relish, Susan tells me, she’s going to prepare ingredients for Sweet Mustard Pickles, another longtime favorite recipe. It’s from the Merrymeeting Merry Eating cookbook from the Mid Coast Hospital Auxiliary in Maine. She likes its recipes because “it doesn’t have anything we • Canning Continued on page 8

Preserving food is a family tradition for Susan. One of nine children, she grew up on the Hunter farm on Route 171 that has been in the family since 1803. “Growing up on a farm, you didn’t have money, so we always had gardens, and we could always trade.” She canned with her mother and grandmother, and “we took 4-H classes. All my sisters do some kind of preserving.”

“Gardening is so satisfying, earthy.

It’s like what you’re supposed to do,” she emphasizes. “I get satisfaction out of it.”

We’re talking so much, she realizes the sugar may have cooked too quickly on her new stovetop. She concentrates for a few minutes, stirring, and then deftly pours the relish into hot jars. She leaves about ½ in. of headspace in each,

and drains some of the excess liquid off the vegetables for the final jar. “My kids loved pickle juice even before I did canning.” Some homeopathic remedies recommend drinking pickle juice to control asthma.

She arranges the jars in the huge canning pot, pointing out another yard sale bargain. It was hard to find a rack that would fit inside the special pot the induction stove requires, but she just kept looking and looking until it appeared.

While the relish processes, Susan turns to put together ingredients for mustard pickles. They’re a family favorite, and once sampled, most people love them. It’s an heirloom kind of recipe, sort of like the milkweed blossom or Queen Anne’s Lace jellies she also makes.

For a few days, she’s been collecting pickling cucumbers and storing them in the refrigerator until she has enough to make a batch. Now she slices them into a large bowl. “I don’t even bother to weigh the pickles anymore. I just kind

State Arts Council opens registration for NH Poetry Out Loud Registration is now open for New Hampshire Poetry Out Loud 20162017. High schools and regional groups in the state wishing to participate have until October 17 to sign up; the total number of registrations is limited to 40 groups.

Managed in New Hampshire by the NH State Council on the Arts, Poetry Out Loud is a nationwide program that offers free educational materials to schools to help students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage.

Participants memorize and recite poems from hundreds that have been identified by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation to represent the breadth of great poetry internationally and across generations.

Competitors are judged on the quality of their presentation, accuracy and evidence of understanding.

Last year, approximately 10,000 New Hampshire high school-aged students participated. In New Hampshire, winners represent their high school at four regional, semi-final competitions;

semi-final winners then participate in the state championship. The state champion travels to Washington, DC for the national finals, where more than $50,000 in college scholarships and prizes is awarded to the top finishers.

New Hampshire’s Poetry Out Loud supporters include the Putnam Foundation – a donor-advised fund of the NH Charitable Foundation – and the New Hampshire Writers Project.

Other partners include the Poetry Society of New Hampshire, the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire and the Frost Place.

Those Influential Wentworths

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper The Royal Governors…the title has a ring to it and reminds one of the pre-Revolutionary War days in the New England area. It brings to mind a gentleman in powdered wig, silk waistcoat and knee breeches sitting in an elegant parlor sipping tea and writing long letters back to the King in England. The letters would report how things were going in America, the King’s newest colony and a place rich with timber and other goods just ripe for the picking.

That image could describe New Hampshire’s Royal Governors, and more specifically the Wentworths, who ruled the state for years leading up the Revolutionary War. After the war and freedom from England’s rule, the Wentworths lost the power and position they once enjoyed.

The name Wentworth is still to be found in the Lakes Region, where the last Royal Governor, John Wentworth, had a summer home, making Wolfeboro the “First Summer Resort in America” in the 1700s. It also is the name of one of the area’s prettiest bodies of water, Lake Wentworth.

Between around 1680 and 1741, Britain appointed a governor to rule over Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

The reign of the Wentworths started

with John Wentworth, who, according to Wikipedia.org, was born in England in 1671 and died in Dover, New Hampshire in 1730. He was trained to be a sea captain and was appointed

by Queen Anne as a councilor for New Hampshire in 1712. By 1714, he was lieutenant governor of the area.

He also reigned over the Province of Massachusetts. After his death, his three sons – Samuel, Benning and Mark Hunking Wentworth - (he had a total of 13 children) rose to prominence over time.

After John’s death, others arrived to govern the area, but by 1741 Benning was appointed the next Royal Governor. Benning was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and

attended Harvard, where he graduated in 1715. The family, by this time, was well established and of the upper class.

Although a remote area, New England saw its own power struggles.

Benning’s father was a distant relation of the Marquis of Rockingham, and the Marquis was a separate governorship for New Hampshire. There were border disputes with Massachusetts and it likely all boiled down to who was doing favors to gain the most land. That ended when King George’s Board of Trade decided to create two states and two governorships – one for Massachusetts and another for New Hampshire.

Benning was in England at the time, trying to untangle a personal financial mess created when timber he shipped and sold to Spain went unpaid. He ended up in bankruptcy, and as part of a series of deals, his creditors agreed to dissolve the debt if the government in England gave Benning governorship of New Hampshire.

Back in New Hampshire, Benning took up his new job and began to make many land grants with the blessing of England. If history is to be believed, Benning was quite a shrewd businessman and sold land to developers in remote areas, which led to further disputes.

His practice of granting tracts of land to friends and relatives was viewed with resentment and he resigned as Governor in the 1760s. Perhaps as a gesture of goodwill, Benning donated 500 acres of property to Dartmouth College.

On a personal note, Benning married Abigail Ruck of Boston around 1720; they had three children who all died before their father. After Abigail’s death in 1755, Benning created quite a stir when at the age of 64, he married the family’s youthful housekeeper, Martha Hilton. Martha had been with the family for years and the union of elderly governor and younger housemaid was scandalous. When Benning passed, Martha became sole heir of Wentworth property and money.

The last of the Wentworths to rule New Hampshire was Benning’s’ nephew, Sir John Wentworth. He is the best known of the Royal Governors in New Hampshire, and especially in the Lakes Region where he built his summer mansion on the shores of the lake named for the Wentworth family.

Certainly the Wentworths held power and position in New England, and the King himself must have been well aware of the wealthy family.

John, when appointed governor, was soon to step into a hornet’s nest of trouble as the stirrings of the American Revolution began. Resentments against England were growing in the colonies; it is certain some of that resentment was aimed at the Wentworths and the amount of land and power the family grabbed over the years as the everyday, hardworking average New Englander struggled to survive.

John’s parents were both from wealth in New Hampshire, and John attended Harvard, where he graduated with a master’s degree in 1758. (Oddly

enough, while at Harvard, John became close friends with one of the founding fathers – and an eventual President –of the United States, John Adams.)

As he went out into the business world, young John made a bold move by partnering with others to purchase and develop a large amount of land in the Lake Winnipesaukee area. He also traveled to England and was sympathetic and helpful in the repeal of the hated Stamp Act; he clearly sided with the colonists back in America.

John was most likely a diplomatic man and he interceded on his Uncle Benning’s behalf, convincing those in power to allow his uncle to resign his governorship rather than be thrown out of office.

In 1766 John was appointed Governor and vice admiral of New Hampshire. Times were changing, and John was part of that change. The state was growing and he helped with the division of New Hampshire into five counties; he named two of them after relations in England: Rockingham and Strafford.

John Wentworth also saw the need for better methods of travel and he ordered the development of roads between towns. Additionally, he saw a need to develop a militia, and it was this very militia that would soon turn against England and their New Hampshire governor in the fight for freedom.

Trouble and unrest was brewing all over New England and after the Boston Tea Party, Wentworth, through his diplomatic skills, diffused a similar rebellion in the Portsmouth area.

After the 1774 removal of guns and gunpowder from Fort William and Mary, Governor Wentworth was right in the middle of the conflict. But this time he was angered by the defiance of removing the guns and he ordered the militia to keep the peace. The militia was also defiant, and soon it was clear the days of governing by the Wentworths would soon be over.

After an angry mob gathered outside

the Governor’s home on the seacoast, John and his wife Frances fled by ship to Canada.

But during the height of his popularity, John built a beautiful summer home in the Lakes Region in the area that is now Wolfeboro. Visitors today will find the mansion long gone, but traces of its former glory remain in stories.

The Governor must have loved the lake, because he chose to build his summer home on the shores of what would become known as Lake Wentworth. The shore of his property totaled about a two-mile stretch. At the landing, supplies for the mansion came from the seacoast area or Boston.

The bustling property had a sawmill and barns for cattle. The Governor often entertained for weeks at a time, bringing important dignitaries from all over New England and perhaps Europe to the rural Lakes Region.

It is said Frances, the Governor’s wife, loved socializing and society.

(After they fled to Canada and later England, she was rumored to have an affair with a relative of the royal family.)

Although she entertained often when in the Lakes Region, Frances was not fond of the country and found it isolating and tedious.

After the Revolutionary War, the estate on Lake Wentworth was put up for public auction in 1780. The 67

acres of land included the mansion and all its furnishings. It passed through many owners over the years and was destroyed by fire in the 1820s. In 1933, landowner Lawrence S. Mayo gave 100 acres and the site where the mansion had stood to the state of NH. The Works Progress Administration restored the cellar walls of the former mansion and had the land cleared. Stamp Act Island, on Lake Wentworth, has an interesting history; Governor John Wentworth once owned it. The Governor was influential in repealing Britain’s Stamp Act, and although he was a loyal British subject, locals who supported the Revolution still liked him. It was perhaps because of his support to repeat the Stamp Act that the lake was named for him.

As the new nation was formed, the years of power, privilege and property ownership of the great Wentworth family faded away. However, their influence can still be seen, whether we are aware of it or not. The naming of New Hampshire counties, the lake that bears the Wentworth name, the title of Oldest Summer Resort in America given to Wolfeboro, and even the title of one Granite State town, Wentworth, are all reminders of the power and glory of the once great family of Royal Governors.

Launching Artist-in-Residence Program at the Belknap Mill The Belknap Mill Society in downtown Laconia invites the community to a public reception on Wednesday, September 7 from 5 to 7 pm, to celebrate the launch of its Artist-in-Residence program. Larry Frates, founder of Frates Creates and long-time artist and arts instructor, will serve as the first Artist-in-Residence at the Mill. The event will feature an exhibition of Larry’s artwork and light refreshments in the Riverside Gallery at the Mill.

While Larry has deep roots in Laconia and applies his talents to develop the arts and arts resources in the Lakes Region, he also facilitates state, national and global arts programs.

“Larry has facilitated a number of highly successful collaborative arts project in the iEARN global educational network,” said Ed Gragert, Interim Global Coordinator for the Global Campaign for Education. “He has enabled young people around the world to interact and work together in friendship and peace through the universal language of art.”

In his role as Artist-in-Resident, Larry will help develop the new Cultural Committee for the Belknap Mill. This committee will work with the Mill’s staff to recommend and implement multi-disciplinary arts programming at the Belknap Mill. In addition, Larry will offer weekly arts classes and specialty workshops for students of all ages and abilities, and intergenerational exhibits in the Mill’s Riverside Gallery.

The Belknap Mill Society is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve the Belknap Mill as the Lakes Region’s unique historic gathering place and a center for awardwinning cultural and educational programs. Built in 1823, the Belknap Mill is the oldest unaltered textile mill in the United States and is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places as a site worthy of preservation.

Since the beginning of time, people have searched for ways to preserve the life of food as a basic means of survival. Before the concept of food preservation developed, humans traveled from location to location in search of fresh foods, a way of living we refer to as hunter-gatherer. Food had to be eaten almost immediately after it was either killed in instances of animal meat or not long after harvesting for fruits and vegetables.

Some of the earliest methods of food preservation include freezing, drying, curing, and fermenting, many of which are still used today even though food preservation technology has greatly expanded. Pickling is now among the

most popular methods of food preservation, a process consisting of using acids, such as vinegar, to oxidize bacteria in food so it will not cause illness when consumed. Canning and preserving foods with sugar or honey is also popular. Nowadays the technology includes heating, ultra high water pressure, osmotic inhibition and other complex methods.

Ann has been a Field Specialist in food safety with the UNH Cooperative Extension’s Food & Agriculture team since 1988. She works with individuals, farmers and the food service industry to improve safe food handling practices and reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses. In her spare time, she does enjoy canning jams, pickles and applesauce.

Global Awareness Local Action (G.A.L.A.) is a nonprofit organization based in Ossipee, NH working to translate sustainability education into local action that is practical, effective, and fun. Through strong cross-sector collaborations, G.A.L.A. offers educational, skill building, and community service opportunities that help participants grow food, conserve energy, save money, and strengthen both personal and ecological health.

The organization’s most popular program is called Sustain-A-Raisers, a

volunteer driven “eco” home and yard makeover initiative modeled after the barn-raiser. Each “raiser” consists of G.A.L.A. volunteers installing raised garden beds, compost bins, rain barrels, cold frames, and clotheslines at private homes, schools, food pantries, assisted living residence, and other community sites.

G.A.L.A. also offers a monthly Reskill-ience Workshop where attendees can learn skills including how to make nontoxic household cleaners, basic bee keeping, food preservation and canning, bike maintenance, campfire cooking, compass and map navigation, and more.

During the winter months, G.A.L.A. hosts a Community Contra Dance Series and offers support for starting small sustainability Study Circles.

September Programs And Events At Squam Lakes Natural Science Center The first day of school is upon us and with it comes a variety of educational and fun events at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness.

On September 3 from 9 to 11 am, celebrate the publication of Nearer to Nature by Science Center Naturalist Margaret Gillespie with a nature walk for adults. The book walks readers through the seasons, delving into nature’s mysteries. Margaret

Gillespie will explore the local fauna and flora at locations around the Lakes Region in the nature walk series. This trip will explore the grounds of the Science Center. The Science Center encompasses 200 acres but many delightful spots are off trail or seldom seen. Explore lesser-known sites at the Science Center. Conclude with a wildlife visit from an animal whose relatives roam the surroundings when

On Saturday, September 10, from 9:30 am to 5 pm, the Science Center will celebrate raptors, flight, and migration at Raptor Spectacular.

Volunteer docents will be on hand roving the live animal exhibit trail with live raptors throughout the day.

Engaging, naturalist-led Up Close to Animals presentations feature raptors at 1 pm (Broad-winged hawk), 2 pm (Peregrine falcon), and 3 pm (Sawwhet owl). Up Close to Animals presentations are included with regular trail admission.

In addition, the Vermont Institute of Natural Science will be holding a special program from 11 am to 12:30 pm called Raptor Encounter. with Chris Collier, Director of Onsite Interpretation for the Vermont Institute of Natural Science. Chris previously filled a number of roles on staff at the Science Center - as an intern, an assistant naturalist, and Ragged Island manager. Join Chris for this exciting Raptor Encounter where he will display a variety of live falcons, hawks, and owls. This first-hand program shows just what defines birds as raptors and explains their adaptations for life as predators on the wing. A flight

demonstration, touchable artifacts, and hands-on materials round out this special experience. Space is limited.

Advance reservations and payment are recommended; the Raptor Encounter event has an additional fee on top of trail admission.

Nature Play Time will occur on September 14 from 10 to 11 am.

Children age 3 and under are invited to join in some unstructured paly in nature. Set the stage for fun to laugh and explore the natural world together.

Participants will play in a shallow stream with buckets and scoops one week and play in the forest walking on log balance beams and making stick forts the next week. Participants can come once or every session. This program will be held outdoors so please dress accordingly.

On Friday, September 16 from 9:30 to 11:30 am, strap on your work boots for an Invasive Species Removal Work Day. Adults can join Master Gardener Liz Stevens to learn to identify and remove invasive plant species.

From September 20 to 23, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm each day, the Science Center will host a Certified Interpretive ,Guide Training Course. Interpreters are storytellers. They are tour guides, museum docents, zoo docents, park rangers, naturalists, and more. In this four-day course offered by Squam Lakes Natural Science Center and the National Association for Interpretation you will learn techniques to make connections with an audience, give meaningful and enjoyable presentations, and create thought provoking and relevant interpretive programs. Participants have the opportunity to become a Certified Interpretive Guide through the National

Prescott Farm Environmental Education Center will be hosting a three-day permaculture design charrette from September 23 to 25 to guide campus growth and use of existing resources as part of our 2016 strategic planning process.

Permaculture is a creative design process based on whole-systems thinking informed by the ethics of “Earth Care, People Care, Fair Share” and 12 design principles.

This approach guides us to mimic the patterns and relationships we can find in nature and can be applied to all aspects of human habitation, from agriculture to ecological

For this charrette, Prescott Farm is looking for a diverse team of permaculture practitioners, students, teachers, leaders of other nonprofit organizations, architects, landscapers, and others to collaborate on this project. Previous experience with permaculture design is helpful, but not required.

Design certificate. The skills gained during the charrette will be extremely useful as participants tackle similar projects with their own properties or organizations.

The charrette will kick-off on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6 pm with an optional two-hour Introduction to Permaculture presentation, which will also be open to the general public ($15 per person). Friday will be an introduction to Prescott Farm and its goals, Saturday will focus on A & A (analysis & assessment), and Sunday attention will turn to design recommendations, concluding by mid-afternoon. The charrette facilitators/Instructors are Steve Whitman, Bryan Felice and Sarah Dunham-Miliotis. Steve is a professional planner and educator based in New Hampshire and his work is focused largely on community planning and sustainability issues. Bryan has been building with natural materials for most of his life, founded the NH based eco-design/build firm Un-

dustrial Timber Frames and teaches at PSU. Sarah is the Education Director at Prescott Farm.

Prescott Farm offers public programs designed to encourage environmental exploration for all ages; field trips; WildQuest Day Camps (during school vacation weeks – Feb., April and JuneAugust); a Naturalist in the Classroom program which fosters long-term partnerships with local elementary schools; and Fledglings, a nature-based preschool.

The 160-acre historic family farm features woodland and field trails, historic barns, an old-fashioned maple sugaring operation during the month of March, heritage gardens, and a forested pond. Prescott Farm is open year-round, seven days a week from 9 am to 4 pm. Hiking trails and the Natural Playscape are open to the public daily from dawn to dusk.

MetroCast To Host 18th Annual Robbie Mills Memorial Golf Tournament The annual Robbie Mills Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Thursday, Sept. 15 at the Lochmere Country Club in Tilton. The event, which is hosted by the MetroCast Foundation, will benefit organizations that serve at-risk youth and other vulnerable groups in the region.

Now in its 18th year, the event began as an effort to honor the memory of Robbie Mills, a 14-year-old Laconia boy who was killed in 1997 for his trail bike by two older teens (Mills’ mother is a MetroCast employee).

In subsequent years, the number of organizations supported by the fundraiser expanded to include the Boys & Girls Club of the Lakes Region, Greater Lakes Child Advocacy Center (Belknap-Merrimack Community Action Program), Spaulding Youth Center Foundation, Greater Lakes Region Charitable Foundation for Children (Children’s Auction), and more.

With this in mind, Jim Bruder, Chairman and CEO of Harron

Communications, MetroCast’s parent company, founded the MetroCast Foundation in 2007 to facilitate donations for the Tournament from MetroCast video programmers, vendor partners and local businesses.

Last year’s event raised more than $26,000 in support of youth-serving organizations in the area.

With the 2016 event approaching, MetroCast is seeking event sponsors and tournament registrations. Single player and team registrations, as well as a variety of sponsorship opportunities, are being accepted online at Metrocast. com/robbiemills.

Lasagna Dinner at Union Church in September The Women’s Fellowship of the Union Congregational Church will kick off the fall season with a taste of Italy Lasagna Dinner in Thursday, September 8. The menu will include a spread of several homemade lasagnas, tossed salad, Italian bread, assorted home baked pies, coffee and/or punch, served from 5 to 7 pm.

Dinner tickets are sold at the door only; the cost is $8.00 for adults and $4.00 for children. The church is located at 80 Main Street in the village of Union (part of Wakefield) and the

dinner will be served in the historic Reunion Grange Hall – Hotchkiss Commons across the street from the church. There is plenty of parking across the street behind the church, in front of the church, in front of the Grange Hall and along the street.

Hotchkiss Commons is handicapped accessible. All proceeds from the dinner will go to the Women’s Fellowship programs, which benefit the church, community and worldwide missions.
