Ten Years and Many Projects Later…at Castle in the Clouds elements. Owners came and went, and each owner did as much upkeep as possible, although it required a lot of money and skill.

Castle in the Clouds was aging by the year 2000, but luckily, help was on the way. According to www. castleintheclouds.org. “The Castle Preservation Society was initially formed as an advisory subsidiary of the Lakes Region Conservation Trust, the non-profit land trust that purchased Castle in the Clouds in January 2002 and formally took over the management of the property in 2004 after all purchase payments were completed, running the facility for the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

It is also worth the expense to maintain the property, because it is an important piece of the history of our country. Thomas Plant’s story and his impact spread far beyond NH, and his story and that of the castle he built is the stuff of American dreams. One can imagine that Thomas Plant would be proud if he could see his castle today. Back in the early 1900s, when Plant, and his wife, Olive, built Castle in the Clouds in Moultonboro, NH, did they think ahead to what would become of their beloved estate these many years later? Did Plant wonder, as he sipped his morning coffee while looking out the dining room window at the breathtaking views of the mountains, if it would remain a wonderful forested area? Did he stand quietly on the lawn and reflect on the future as he gazed at Lake Winnipesaukee sparkling in the distance? Turning back to his mansion, did he wonder, with a sigh of worry, what it would take to see the vast property maintained into the future after he was gone?

As any property owner will agree, the upkeep to maintain a house and land is neverending. There is always something to be fixed, something that needs a new coat of paint or a garden to be weeded or a window to be replaced.

Multiply that maintenance by many, many times and you will have some idea of what it takes to keep the vast Castle in the Clouds estate in top-notch condition.

• Castle Continued from page 3 In 2006 the Castle Preservation Society became an independent 501(c)3 non-profit and assumed full management and restoration responsibilities for Castle in the Clouds with the understanding that the historic buildings and operational area would be deeded to the Castle Preservation Society by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust once all separation details were worked out. In May of 2010 the Castle Preservation Society received title to the historic buildings and all other operational buildings and acreage related to Castle in the Clouds business (135.45 acres in two parcels: 128.19 acres around the Castle and 7.26 acres at the entrance area on Rt. 171). Title to the property

was conveyed subject to a conservation easement.

The Lakes Region Conservation Trust continues to manage the 5,245 remaining acres and the 28 miles of trails that crisscross the landscape.

The Lakes Region Conversation Trust and Castle Preservation Society’s joint stewardship of Castle in the Clouds is an ideal arrangement which separates management responsibilities according to each organization’s mission and expertise: the Trust’s conservation of the land and its natural and recreational resources and the Society’s preservation of the historic buildings and management of supportive services and programming.”

The recently repaired and restored dining room in the Castle. the upkeep on a mountaintop estate with a unique architecture is quite a task. It is one the Society has never taken lightly, with efforts over the 10 years to not only fix what time had eroded, but also to do so in a careful, conservative manner that would ensure history was respected.

What does all that mean? According to Michelle Landry, Curatorial Director at Castle in the Clouds, it can be boiled down to one goal: to save the place to

share it with the public.

“Ten years ago,” she says as she stands on a second-floor balcony at the Castle on a busy Saturday morning in August while visitors begin to arrive for tours, “things were deteriorating.

The property consists of the mansion, gatehouses, and carriage house, which is now the visitor’s center.”

They rebuilt the terrace and created restaurant seating on the former historic horse exercise paddock. Seating for dining was also created in the former horse stalls. The roof was repaired as well.

When all was repaired at the carriage house, the Society had a solid building for staff offices, a café and events.

Then it was on to tackle a big project: the approximately 10,000 square-foot Castle.

“We get pretty severe weather up here,” Michelle explains. “For example, because we are on a mountain, snow or rain hits the building horizontally.”

One can imagine the damage that can do to a structure.

“Last winter,” adds Castle executive director Charles Clark, “the rotted timbers on the pergola were replaced.

We will be starting work on the flashing and tiles and the historic skylight as well.”

The Castle, as many know, was built carefully in 1913/1914 and the Plants spared no construction expense.

According to historical information at www.castleintheclouds.org, “The house is an unusual example of Arts and Crafts architecture in New England, expressing that aesthetic movement’s philosophy of living in harmony with nature. Designed by the architectural firm of J. Williams Beal & Sons of Boston, the house not only exhibits skilled hand craftsmanship in every aspect of its interior and exterior, but also features a number of technological innovations of the early 20th century.”

Italian stonemasons cut the multisided stones that adorn to exterior of the building. The native stonework was held in place with mortar, but that was 100 years ago. “We had the stonework repointed, and attended to the wood rot on the white oak timbers. The chimneys also were repointed,” says Michelle.

The roof was leaking in places, but it is now all sealed up and dry. The goal of keeping the water out was met and such features as the beautiful terra cotta roof tiles were preserved.

Those who come expecting to see a grand mansion such as those in Newport, RI, will be surprised to learn this is a different sort of estate and very in keeping with the natural, wooded

setting. The Arts and Crafts style is apparent everywhere in the Castle and on the entire estate. While everything was made with care and craftsmanship and no expense was spared, Lucknow was a comfortable home for Thomas and Olive Plant, who were active outdoorspeople. Every fixture, every light, every window and door and all the woodwork were skillfully created and chosen to match the Arts and Crafts style of the time.

“It is a unique design,” Michelle says.

“You can see the attention to detail in such things as the intentional dimpling in the wood; our historic preservation carpenter has worked to replicate that in the wood he uses.”

One perfect example of the care to preserve the original integrity of the home is the work done on the dining room. Michelle says there was extensive water damage in that portion of the building, and now the work is complete, all is tight and dry. The beautiful cast plaster ceiling’s original design has been replicated, the original furniture is in place and the flooring and wood paneling on the walls has been created to echo the original. Every detail, even down to the curtain sheers in the windows, is just like the original from Plant’s day.

The Plants had some wonderful brochures created to showcase the Castle when they decided finances

were tight and they should sell the property. They hired a photographer from Concord, NH to capture the mountains and the estate and it is from these old photos that, when enlarged, details of the curtains hanging in the windows can be seen.

Plant wanted the castle to be a modern, working home and to that end, he had electricity installed when he moved in. Modern technology was embraced in appliances, central heating, refrigeration, and even such luxury touches as a plate warmer and electric dumbwaiter.

Those who attend the upcoming August 29 program (taking place at 7 pm) called Ten Years of Preservation at Castle in the Clouds, will learn all the details of what the preservation work has been and the efforts to do the job right and to do it with care. Some of the skilled professionals who took part in the preservation will speak and share stories.

Michelle gets excited when she talks about the upcoming projects at the Castle, such as decorating the interior to match the original. (For example, the original wallpaper has been researched and will be recreated, as will fabrics and rugs.)

• Castle Continued from page 6 excited to research the people who worked on the property and to tell their stories, because, as she says, it is all part of the total picture of Castle in the Clouds.

“We meet visitors all the time who tell us stories of relatives who once worked here. Sometimes someone will bring an old photo and that is deeply appreciated. We would like to reach out and tell the stories of those who worked here – on the grounds and in the Castle.

And we would like to tell Olive Plant’s story as well,” says Michelle.

Much has been focused on Thomas Plant, the rags-to-riches millionaire who bought up all he could see in the Ossipee Mountain range. But less is told about Mrs. Plant (Olive) and clearly Michelle wants to know more about the woman who married a millionaire and lived an eventful life with her husband, sticking with him until the end.

Work is definitely ongoing and now that much has been done to repair the Castle, future projects on the list include work to the upper gatekeeper’s cottage. The historic dam, which Plant had constructed to create a small lake, is on the repair list as well.

Two years from now, preservation will move back inside the Castle, where the library will be the focus. The stonework will be repointed outside to make sure all is tight and dry. In the beautiful library, the original Napoleon themed prints will remain and the original lighting as well. The flooring and tile will be kept as the original was and all will be refreshed. The current dark maroon wallpaper will be replaced with gold silk wallpaper, as was the original in Plant’s day.

At this time, visitors do not tour the Castle’s basement, but after work is done there, that will be on the tour in the future.

Stonework and the colorful roof tiles at the Castle. weddings and events, the café and many special programs, as well as the admission money from visitor tours generate finances during the warm weather months. Donations and fundraising also aid in meeting expenses. Restoration funding comes from a combination of private donors and grants.

After the Castle closes for the season in late October, work begins to create a wonderland for the Christmas holiday season. Christmas at the Castle features an artisan fair and tours of the Castle, which is decorated beautifully as it might have been long ago.

If Thomas Plant’s ghost had looked down upon his beloved estate over the

years, he would have been distressed to see things needing repairs. But these days, his spirit would be most pleased to see things looking beautiful and solid once again.

The work may be neverending to maintain a home, not to mention a castle. Thanks to the dedication of the Preservation Society members that spearheaded many of the original efforts and the staff and volunteers who love Castle in the Clouds, the next 10 years and beyond are looking bright.

“Exemplary Country Estates” Featuring Christina Ashjian The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum in the Weirs Beach area is hosting a presentation, “Exemplary Country Estates” featuring Christina Ashjian on Saturday September 2 at 11 am.

In the early 20th-century, the New Hampshire Board of Agriculture launched a program to boost the rural economy and promote tourism through the sale of abandoned farms to summer residents. After introducing

the country house movement, Cristina Ashjian focuses attention on some of the great country estates featured in the New Hampshire program between 1902 and 1913. Which private estates were recognized as exemplary, and who were their owners? Using historic images and texts, Ashjian discusses well-known estates now open to the public such as The Fells on Lake Sunapee, The Rocks in Bethlehem,

Drive-Bys, Cruise-Ins & Auto Shows!

Story and photos by Barbara Neville Wilson When compared to boats and trains, automobiles and motorcycles are fairly recent arrivals on the transportation scene in central New Hampshire. But once here, Tin Lizzies and Harley Davidsons forever changed the way people look at the Lakes Region. There’s nothing better than a leisurely drive along back roads and scenic vistas, and collectors who know that are increasingly drawn to the area to drive, house and display their cars.

Besides one-day and weekendlong events, central New Hampshire is home to individual, commercial and non-profit collections, some quite specialized, and others, eclectic.

Have you driven through Melvin Village along Route 109 in Tuftonboro recently? A cohort of antiques collectors has set up shop in the small town. You may have noticed the Melvin Village Garage, Tree Tops Automotive, McGee Motors and the Village Antique and Classic Cars. There are a dozen or more scattered nearby and beyond the village. Some have been around for decades. Bob Bahre introduced many to the area when he expanded the old Bryar Motorsports Park to become what is now New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Drawn by low taxes, great driving and like-minded folks, they happily populate the many local auto events and are, perhaps, responsible for the success of the Castle in the Clouds Antique & Classic Auto Event in June, the expansion to include cars at the July New Hampshire Boat Museum’s boat auction, and the popularity of the Cruise In to the Wright Museum event each August.

New on the scene in Loudon in 2017, the North East Motorsports Museum opened in June. Its nearly 10,000 square feet is packed with practically every kind of mechanical racing transportation ever to be seen in New England races: stock cars, street rods, snowmobiles, Indy cars, LeMans, motorcycles, and midget cars included. It is open weekends, 10 am to 4 pm through October 1, with expanded hours during Speedway events. (Go to http:// www.nemsmuseum.com/welcome. html to confirm.)

The American Police Motorcycle Museum in Meredith wins fine reviews from visitors. Its three floors are chock full with 94 motorcycles, and uniforms and paraphernalia related to law enforcement from the early 20th century on. The Maintenance Shop is home to the in-process restoration of a 1929 Indian and a 1970 Triumph police motorcycle. Photographs and video clips filmed as early as 1918 give depth to the exhibits. The museum is open Thursday to Monday, noon to 5 pm through Columbus Day, sometimes a week or so later.

Beatles tribute band wraps up summer concert series The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand summer concert series draws to a close as the unofficial end of the summer comes to Wolfeboro on Labor Day weekend.

The final band in the summer concert series was also last year’s final summer concert in Cate Park, as Studio Two makes its return to the bandstand on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Studio Two is hailed by The British Beer Company as New England’s Best Beatles tribute band and unlike many Beatles tribute bands, does not try to deliver the entire Beatles catalog in its two-hour show.

Instead, Studio Two concentrates on what are some of the most exciting and fun times in the Beatles career, the club and touring years.

Those years were the years when many people saw the Beatles play, the years where they crafted their sound and their stage performance and the years where they took the world by storm and changed everything.

In other words, the songs that Studio Two performs come from the pre-Sgt. Pepper era.

The band features graduates from Berklee College of Music, who met in a “town slightly west of Liverpool,” better known as Milford. They are experienced musicians of today’s generation and are dedicated to preserving the memory and the fan culture of the Beatles generation.

Chillin’ While Grillin’ ~ It’s All in the Sauce!

By Chef Kelly Ross Although much of the summer is behind us, there is still plenty of time for some great grilling. Over my past two articles, we have talked about some fun and original recipes. One staple to most grilling includes BBQ Sauce.

There are many good ones out there and everyone has a favorite. I wanted to share a recipe for my homemade BBQ sauce; I use it on so many things.

It works as a marinade or as a brushon sauce while grilling. I also make a BBQ dip with the sauce, which is very popular. My recipe has a southwestern flavor, which I have never found before in a BBQ sauce, but it is very simple to make and can be done in just an hour or two if you want. I, however,

let mine simmer for 24 hours just to continue to bring out the flavors of all the ingredients. It makes the house smell awesome in the process too.

This recipe will produce enough sauce to get you through many, many BBQ sessions and will last for quite some time when refrigerated. Here is what you will need: Vegetable oil - just enough to cover the bottom of the pot 1 Vidalia or sweet onion, diced small 2 minced cloves of garlic 1/2 cup of ground cumin 1/2 cup of chili powder 1/4 cup of granulated garlic….not garlic salt or garlic powder 1/4 cup of coarse black pepper Few good shakes of salt #10 can of Ketchup 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1/4 cup of honey 1/4 cup of brown sugar Add water as needed to get to the thickness/consistency desired Put oil into a pot. Add onions and cook on a medium-high heat until the onions are almost translucent, then

add your garlic. Stir for a couple of minutes. Add all of the spices and stir vigorously until very well blended and the consistency of a loose paste.

You may need to add a little more oil to get the proper consistency. Turn the temperature down to low medium.

Add the ketchup. Stir well with a whip, making sure you are getting everything off the bottom of the pot and well integrated into the ketchup. With a rubber spatula, scrape as much ketchup out of the can as possible. At this point, I turn on hot water from the faucet and with a medium flow, tilt the can under the water and turn the can to try to get all the ketchup off the can. Use as little water as possible to clean the can. Set aside. Add the mustard, brown sugar, and honey. Again, stir very well.

Once the sauce is hot, turn down the heat to low and let simmer for up to eight hours. The water you saved can be used as needed and you may need more depending on how much water you have in the can. Again, make it as thick or thin as you want. I like it fairly thick. It is always easier to thin it out than to make it thicker. The longer you let it cook, the thicker it will become and the more water you will need. If you simmer the sauce overnight, make sure the temperature is on low, add a little water before you go to bed and stir again and cover it.

Once your sauce is done, take off the heat and let cool as soon as possible. A nice hint is put the pot of sauce into the sink. Make sure the stopper is in. Keep the sauce covered and fill the sink with cold water up to maybe ¾ of the way up the outside of the pot. Add ice to the water if possible. Occasionally stir the sauce. it’s gone from hot to slightly warm or even room temperature, pour into desired containers. I recycle all plastic containers that I buy things in, such as margarine or butter spreads, whipped cream, etc. These work great and stack well. This sauce is tasty on chicken, pork, steak and burgers or anything you like BBQ sauce on. I think you will really enjoy it. It is very different from any BBQ sauce you have ever had. The flavors are kind of like a combination of BBQ sauce and Chili.

One thing to always remember is that everyone’s taste is different. During the many times you stir it, give it a taste.

Never be afraid to adjust seasonings to your liking. Some people like more of a vinegar based BBQ sauce. If that is you, add some instead of water at one point.

Now let’s go away from the BBQ sauce theme, unless you like BBQ sauce on, or in this case, in your burger. Most all carnivores LOVE a good burger. Here is something a little different but is generally a huge hit.

It’s a stuffed burger. The down side is that those who love a rare-medium burger are out of luck. However, it is well worth the sacrifice. I am one who loves a medium rare burger and I don’t even think twice about the temperature when I bite into one of these. There is no real recipe here. This is all about what you like and it is about your favorite toppings.

Start with two small patties per burger. I suggest 3 oz. per pattie.

Squish them down to about ¼ inch or so. You want them fairly thin. From there, think about your favorite things you want on, or in a burger. I’m a big fan of caramelized onions, sautéed peppers, crumble bleu cheese, bacon and horseradish. You can use almost anything. The biggest problem is using too much stuffing. No matter what you put in, you want to make sure it’s not too much. If there is too much stuffing, you will have trouble sealing the edges, which will increase the chances of it falling apart. Put your favorite stuffings on one burger, then put the second burger on top, squish them together somewhat, and then pinch the edges together to seal the two patties into one. I’m a fan of seasoning both sides with Montreal Steak Seasoning, coarse black pepper, granulated garlic, and salt. The stuffing choices are endless depending on what you like. These can be some of the tastiest burgers you will ever have. Whatever cheese you use will be nice and melted and gooey.

Cook on a very hot grill for about five minutes on each side. If you decide to use bigger patties than 3 oz., you may want to cook longer. Once it is cooked, put it on your favorite type of roll. (It’s a grilled onion roll for me.) Hit it with lettuce, tomato or onion if you care to and your favorite condiment. With the exception of mayonnaise, you could actually put your condiment inside the burger if desired. Maybe the BBQ sauce from above. I like horseradish inside and I use mayo or Thousand Island dressing on the roll. Enjoy!

Stained Glass Demo at the League Join the League of NH Craftsmen – Meredith Fine Craft Gallery on Sunday, September 3 from 1 to 3 pm as Louis Michael Pulzetti demonstrates the process of creating stained glass art using the copper foil technique.

Louis’ work with glass is the embodiment of his lifelong dream to design and fabricate beautiful objects. He will demonstrate various steps including the making of patterns, marking and cutting glass, grinding and fitting glass pieces, applying copper foil, assembling in a form and making a copper frame.

A simple glass design will be shown in assorted stages of completion. Various tools will be displayed. Visitors will be encouraged to pick up and examine

everything and will even have a chance to try their hand at applying copper foil to small, smooth pieces of glass.

The grand opening of the Winnipesaukee Winery is scheduled for the weekend of September 9 and 10, from 12 noon to 5 pm at 458 Center Street, Wolfeboro in the 1810 House antiques barn.

The new winery comes to Wolfeboro after operating as Newfound Lake Vineyards in Bristol since 2012.

The winemaker’s ancestors made wine in Germany for many generations.

Several family members served the German royal family before WWI earning the coat of arms. Honoring the family’s ancestors, there is a small image of the Götz family coat of arms printed on the wine label.

The wine that was fermented in Bristol will still carry the Newfound Lake Vineyards label until new batches are fermented in Wolfeboro.

New batches of wine will begin in September with the arrival of NH grown white grapes. White wine will be released in early summer 2018 and new batches of red will be released in late summer 2019 after a two-year oak barrel aging process. The winery also uses locally sourced fruit to make fully dry wines as well as sweet wines.

Tasting room hours are Thursday through Sunday, 12 noon to five pm.

To taste four wines, the cost is $7.00, and you keep the souvenir glass and get a coupon for $2.00 off the purchase of a bottle of wine. Participants will learn about critters camouflaged and hiding, predators and prey, large and small. All equipment is provided to collect pond dwellers but sharp eyes are needed to find them.

The program will conclude with a visit from an aquatic animal.

Ongoing Science Center events and programs include: Up Close to Animals on Saturday and Sunday at 12 noon and 2 pm. Meet live animals up close and learn about them from an experienced naturalist educator. A Different Kind of Artist Workshop Local artists please take notice of a very different workshop being sponsored this fall by the Governor Wentworth Arts Council’s Priscilla Hodges Fund. The workshop will be held at Camp Belknap on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in Tuftonboro.

The unique workshop will take place September 18 to 20 (Monday through Wednesday) from 9 am to 4 pm each day. The artist/instructor will be Leslie Hudson-Tolles from Cleveland, North Carolina (her work can be seen at www.lhudson-tolles.com.) and will focus on the individual artist and their media of choice rather than one media being taught to all participants.

Artists will come to the workshop with their favorite materials and work with Ms. Hudson-Tolles to advance their techniques and own work thereby bringing them to a new level of artistry.

Leslie Hudson-Tolles has been an art instructor for 40 years and a practicing artist in her own right using a variety of media. Her work can be found in collections and galleries around the country and has been featured on the covers of many magazines such as The Chronicle of the Horse, Equine Images and Horseman’s Yankee Pedlar. She is experienced in many media but

artists from beginner through the advanced are welcomed. There will be demonstrations and plenty of one-onone time....and fun!

Tee Up for 19th Annual Robbie Mills Memorial Golf Tournament The annual Robbie Mills Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Wednesday, September 20 at the Lochmere Country Club in Tilton, NH. The event, which is hosted by the MetroCast Foundation, will benefit organizations that serve at-risk youth and other youth-serving groups in the region.

Now in its 19th year, the event began as an effort to honor the memory of Robbie Mills.

In subsequent years, the number of organizations supported by the

fundraiser expanded to include the Boys & Girls Club of the Lakes Region, Greater Lakes Child Advocacy Center (Belknap-Merrimack Community Action Program), Spaulding Youth Center Foundation and the Greater Lakes Region Charitable Foundation for Children (Children’s Auction).

Moultonborough Falls Conservation Area The Lakes Region Conservation Trust (LRCT) and the Moultonborough Conservation Commission (MCC) are working together to preserve an important tract of land in Moultonborough that lies along the lower section of the Red Hill River and Lees Pond, a major water source for Lake Winnipesaukee’s Moultonborough Bay. This 37-acre woodland and wetland parcel, to be known as the Moultonborough Falls Conservation Area, will have walking trails and a small trailhead parking area for the public off Route 25 near Moultonborough Falls.

The Moultonborough Falls Conservation Area (MFCA) is a project of the Moultonborough Conservation Commission, which is raising funds to purchase the property. To date, over $100,000 has been raised toward the project goal of $335,000.

After acquisition of the property, a conservation easement on the land will be granted to the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. This easement will ensure that the land is permanently and legally protected for the benefit and enjoyment of all who enjoy natural settings and outdoor recreational opportunities.

By Diane Cook Johnson Sandwich has returned to its usual tranquility after a very busy Old Home Week. Many thanks to all who made it a great success; lots of work goes into such a week. It was especially nice that the weather cooperated most of the week. Now before school starts up and fall activities begin, it is our time to relax and enjoy.

100 Years of the Sandwich Historical Society The Sandwich Historical Society is celebrating 100 years and lots of activities are still scheduled for August. The regular summer hours of the Marston House Museum and Gift Shop (located at 4 Maple Street) are Wednesday through Saturday

from 10 am to 4 pm. This year’s special exhibit is “In the Beginning: The Centre and Lower Corner”.

Special programs this month include: SHS Pewter Ornament: Joan Cook and the rest of the Sandwich Historical Society Committee Members are happy to announce the availability of a pewter ornament featuring the Society’s Elisha Marston House and barn. Family Hymn Sing The Speers Family Hymn Sing takes place on Sundays from 7:30 to 8:15 pm. This 45-minute informal gathering, begun by the Rev. Guthrie Speers Sr. in the late 1930s, has continued for over 75 years in the old blacksmith shop on the Taylor Road property. A pump organ, plus violin, viola, an occasional bass, recorder, even sometimes an accordion, provide accompaniment. Those people who are present call out hymn numbers and the final one is always “Now the Day Is Over”. Will Speers, grandson of the founder, Associate Head Master, English teacher, and coach at St. Andrew’s School in Delaware, now presides over the Sing. Fall Events Are Full of Family Fun!

By Sarah Wright While some folks are mourning the end of summer, others are looking forward to the cozy sweaters of fall.

With its cool breezes, crisp apples, bright pumpkins, and crunchy leaves, there’s a lot to love about the season.

One of the best ways to enjoy fall is to attend one of many local festivals and events. After all, we live in a state where the season is always on full display. So, in between road trips to ogle the leaves, plan to attend one of these local happenings.

My kids love Prescott Farm. It has great hiking trails and wonderful programs for kids as well as adults, and of course their outdoor playground in the woods is a kid magnet! One event we make sure not to miss is their Annual Harvest Festival, which takes place this year on Saturday, September 16th, from 10 am to 3 pm. Enjoy horse drawn hayrides, face painting, a petting farm, food, music, games, crafts, workshop demonstrations, and a hay jump. Prescott Farm is located at 928 White Oaks Road in Laconia. Another farm I enjoy with my family is the Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm in Tamworth. We’ve been to their Harvest Festival, too, and it’s a wonderful event! This year’s Harvest Festival will be on Saturday, September 23rd, from 11 am to 3 pm.

Located at 58 Cleveland Hill Road, visitors can enjoy wagon rides, live music, vendors, animals, agricultural displays, crafts and games for kids, and seasonal foods. There are also plenty of demonstrations including fiber arts, woodcarving, blacksmithing, beekeeping, and basket weaving, among many others. My kids like helping make apple cider by peeling, cutting, and pressing the apples.

John Cleese Live on Stage Living comedy legend John Cleese is heading to the Capitol Center for the Arts (CCA) in Concord, NH for a live and truly unforgettable evening of conversation and audience Q&A on September 20 at 7 pm. his autobiography So, Anyway… that was described by the Daily Mail as “self-obsessed.” In his self-described “twilight years”, John passes his time writing film scripts, giving speeches to business audiences, doing seminars on creativity, teaching at Cornell, paying alimony, and doting on three huge cats and a fish.

Sean McDonald, a New England native, has traveled extensively before coming back to New Hampshire to settle. He grew up in Malden, MA, one of five children, and is happy to be back home doing what he loves - reporting the news. Sean’s experience crosses the country, from WHDH and WLVI in Boston to KECI in Missoula, Mt., to KIMA in Yakima, Wash. He received a BA from Providence College and MS from Boston University. His hobbies include playing the guitar and piano and writing music. He also enjoys hockey or a round of golf.

Come to the 147th Lancaster Fair for Food, Farm, and Fun Photo courtesy Lancaster Fair The annual Lancaster Fair, northern New Hampshire’s largest summer event, begins Thursday, August 31 and runs through Labor Day Monday, September 4 at the Lancaster Fairgrounds. Now in its 147th year, the Lancaster Fair marks the end of summer by celebrating the state’s agricultural heritage with a variety of family-friendly activities and entertainment. There’s carnival rides and games, farm animal competitions, topnotch music performances – this year’s headliner is country music super group Sawyer Brown – motorized competitions, food, and special activities for the kids. ATVs are welcome and parking is free. Campsites are available on site.

Here is an overview of what Fairgoers can see and do: Fun rides and games – all free with admission: From the flashing lights of the Ferris Wheel to the kiddie rides to all types of carnival games, the Fair’s large midway offers fun and thrills for all ages.

Fascinating Animal Shows: Farm animals and their owners compete for the blue ribbon, and the hard work of the 4-H students is on display. Each day of the Fair features oxen and horse pulls, sheepdog trials, working steer

shows, and horse drills.

The Lancaster Fair features a wide range of entertainment, including a Pig Scramble, the 8th Annual Fireman’s Muster, and the 22nd Annual Classic Car Cruise Night. On Saturday night, Sawyer Brown brings their high-energy music to the Fair grandstand. They have been making music and touring for more than 30 years. More than 50 of their singles have entered the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including three number-one singles.

Rip-roaring, motorized competitions: It’s all about the horsepower at the Fair’s paid ($10 admission) grandstand shows: Big Rig Truck Pull & Show N Shine at 1 pm and a 4 x 4 Truck Pull at 6 pm on Sunday, September 3, and the popular Demolition Derby at 3:30 pm on Monday, September 4. Drivers are coming from as far north as Canada and as far south as New Jersey to participate in these high-octane, motorized competitions. Other competitions include a lawn-and-garden tractor pull on Saturday and a traditional tractor pull on Monday.

Special activities for the kids: Along with the midway rides, the Fair’s Kids’ Korner tent has crafts, daily ventriloquist shows, scavenger hunts, train rides, pedal tractor pulls, and other contests. Children can practice farming at special Farmer-for-a-Day stations and compete in their own power-wheel demo derby on Saturday, September 2 at 1 pm.

An amazing agriculture showcase: See northern New Hampshire’s finest vegetables, plants, fruits, flowers, and homemade crafts in special exhibitions, including 4-H exhibits.

Food stands will be serving pizza, grilled sausage with pepper and onions, French fries, fried dough, apple crisp, and ice cream among other offerings.

One of the food vendors is Robbie Lemos of Annemarie’s Catering. “Our family has been involved in providing food at the Lancaster Fair for 52 years, and over that time we have seen the Fair grow and offer more choices for food and entertainment,” said Lemos.

“We enjoy seeing our customers and the other vendors each year.”

Another Fair vendor that has a long history is North Country Ford in Lancaster. “It started with my dad in the early 1980s, and now my brother and I bring our inventory to the auto sheds at the Fair each year,” said Keith Kopp, North Country Ford partner.

“We look forward to participating each year, as it is a great opportunity for us to meet new people and connect with our existing customers.”

Dreamland Amusements, which supplies midway rides and games to country fairs in the eastern U.S., has been working with the Lancaster Fair since 2006. “Each year, we try to change the flavor of rides a little bit. This year, we are introducing the 93-foot-long Wacky Worm, a nice family roller coaster,” said Bob Destefano of Dreamland Amusements. “The Lancaster Fair is a great way to mark the end of summer with lots of fun activities and entertainment that the entire family can enjoy.”

Great Waters Initiates “Save The Wolfeboro Pianos Project” Most people who reside in or visit Wolfeboro have noticed the ornately painted console pianos around downtown for the past several years.

All are welcome to sit down at any of the pianos and show off their musical skills. There are currently pianos located in the Durgin Stables area, Butternuts, The Downtown Grille and

in Clarke Plaza.

The project was initiated by Peter Cole in 2015; he got the idea from seeing them revitalize the town of Littleton, NH. The inspiration for the public pianos comes from British artist Luke Jerram, who has placed over 400 pianos in more than 20 cities around the world –

including Austin, Texas.

Peter is ready to pass on the duties of moving, storing and maintaining the pianos and Great Waters Music Festival has offered to take up the project in an effort to keep them available to the public during the busy summer months. Donations are being sought for the tuning and maintenance

Three churches among properties added to NH State Register of Historic Places The New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources has announced that the State Historical Resources Council has added four properties to the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places.

The State Register has helped to promote the significance of many historic properties across New Hampshire. The following are the most recent additions to the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places: Built in 1829-30, the Federal-style Congregational Church in Wentworth was divided internally into two floors in 1867 in response to the Toleration Act of 1819, which required municipal and religious services to have separate venues. A landmark on the town common, the church is noteworthy for its prominent three-stage tower, which incorporates urns, balustrades, fluted Doric pilasters and other architectural details.

Also in Wentworth, the StevensCurrier House is a well-preserved example of an 18th-century Cape, which was the most common type of house in the town through 1850.

Records indicate it may have been built by the local blacksmith, who relocated with his family to Wentworth on an ox sled. As with many farms in the area, it was later used as a summer home.

Nashua’s St. Francis Xavier Church was built in 1898 for the industrial city’s growing Franco-American community. An uncommon New Hampshire example of the Norman Gothic Revival style, it is considered the most ambitious church designed by Timothy O’Connell of the architectural firm Chickering and O’Connell, which specialized in church design.

glass windows. It is the earliest identified commission for architect Frederick Nathaniel Footman, who was born in Somersworth and went on to design such notable buildings as the Strafford County Alms House, Laconia High School and the American Brewing Company in Boston.

The 250th Celebration logo was created by Inter-Lakes High School student Malik Carter, class of 2016,

who won a competition sponsored by the Greater Meredith Program.

The logo embodies four principal elements: the natural beauty of the lakes and mountains, the importance of Meredith as the “Latchkey to the White Mountains” and a feature of our early history as depicted by Chief Chocorua of the Abenaki tribe on Indian Island on Meredith Bay. The Town of Meredith will celebrate the 250th Anniversary of incorporation in 2018.
