Going Mobile In Your Own RV Story and Photos by Thomas P. Caldwell Freedom. For some people, it can mean spending a carefree day fishing or boating on one of the lakes. For others, it is hiking into the wilderness and exploring the myriad of trails cut through the mountains. Still others may find freedom heading down the road on a motorcycle.

Or someone may choose to go RVing.

Today’s recreational vehicles have options ranging from essential needs — bed and storage for camping items — to offering all the luxury of a traditional home. They can be tow-behind campers, fifth-wheel travel trailers, or motor homes, where the cabin is built over a truck chassis or the whole thing is incorporated into a Class A coach.

People often graduate to RVs after having done tent camping. Tenting offers the attractive incentive of sleeping under the stars and feeling part of nature, but it has the drawback of possible discomfort from uneven ground, noise and dampness from thunderstorms and rain, and the chance of problems during high winds. With an RV, one can drive in, set up, and relax, regardless of the outside weather conditions.

The newer models also have the latest technology, including USB ports for iPhones and gaming, as well as options for big-screen televisions and theater seating with built-in speakers.

Many people will get into RV-ing with a basic model, taking it to campgrounds for family weekends, but then decide they like the campground, so they purchase a larger model that they will leave there for the season, providing a second home for days off and special get-togethers with friends and family members.

As tastes have become more discriminating, and people have sought an easier lifestyle, the pop-up campers have all but disappeared, with other tow-behinds offering better amenities and not requiring so much work. Like a tent, a pop-up has to be dried out after a rainstorm to prevent mildew, so owners need to open them up once they get home. With a self-contained camper, one needs only to park it when the trip is over.

It’s a good idea to spend some time sitting in an RV before deciding to buy. Is the seating comfortable? Is the bathroom large enough? What are your storage needs? Some people find, after buying an RV, that they feel cramped, or that it’s inconvenient to get to certain things. Taking the time to check out those details can make a big difference in how enjoyable the purchase is, he said.

Perhaps the best part of traveling with an RV is having everything at hand and not having to repack everything each time one wants to go out.

Some people purchase an RV only for going to motorsports events such as the NASCAR races in Loudon. Others have a fifth-wheel towed to a campground for the season. Still others purchase a motor home for a cross-country trip, and sell or consign it after they return home.

Weekend camping is popular throughout New England, and the State of New Hampshire maintains several state parks with RV sites, including Ellacoya State Park on Lake Winnipesaukee. Located in Gilford on the lake’s southwest shore, there is a 600-foot-long sandy beach, with views of the Sandwich and Ossipee mountains. There also is a small-boat launch area for canoes and kayaks.

Tow-behind campers pack a lot into a small space. offers camping alongside a glacial lake and a 72-acre pine stand that is a national landmark. There is a huge beach

and the ability to rent kayaks to get out onto the lake. There’s also a playground for the children, making it a

great family getaway.

The state also has three campgrounds in the White Mountain National Forest: Cannon Mountain RV Park, Lafayette Place Campground, and Dry River Campground. Cannon has only seven RV sites, but its location at Echo Lake in Franconia Notch State Park provides a base camp for hiking, biking, fishing, and swimming. Nearby, Lafayette Place offers 97 campsites, with access to other trails. Dry River Campground is located in Crawford Notch State Park where there are hikes to beautiful waterfalls and the Frankenstein Cliffs.

Longer excursions are possible in the smaller RVs, but for weeklong stays, or a cross-country trip, there is a definite advantage to having a large motor home. If the weather turns foul, cramped quarters can make for a miserable vacation, while the larger RVs provide some breathing room and the opportunity for home entertainment: card and board games, as well as TV and movie-watching.

Gerri Harvey to Demonstrate Up-Cycled Art! The Lakes Region Art Association (LRAA) will hold its upcoming meeting on Monday, Aug. 15 at the Woodside Building Conference Center at the Taylor Community, 435 Union Avenue, Laconia. The meeting begins at 7 pm. Artist Gerri Harvey will demonstrate Up-Cycled Art painting.

When you look at a piece of art, can you tell what medium was used to create it? Colorful and full of texture and interest, Up-Cycled Art “painting” does not contain any paint. It is made completely from torn and snipped bits of junk mail…ads, catalogues and brochures.

Find Your Fun at Hole in the Wall

By Sarah Wright Once upon a time, there were two friends who had been vacationing in Wolfeboro for 30 years. During that time, they noticed there were certain items they couldn’t find locally, and decided to help those residents and visitors who might be driving long distances to find them. After opening Hole in the Wall last May, the owners and staff of the sports and games shop have heard from many happy customers, pleased to find this kind of store in town.

So, what do they sell? If you like to go fishing, you’ll find everything you need at Hole in the Wall. They have rods and reels, live bait and lures, coolers, tackle boxes, and downriggers.

If you’re on vacation and just want to fish for a day, you can also rent your fishing equipment. If you like water sports, you can get water skis and towable tubes at Hole in the Wall, as well as life jackets.

I was surprised to learn that the shop is a very popular spot for boat rentals (and they even have a dock rental). Customers can rent fishing boats, rowboats, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and even the latest trend—the Kypad.

Manager Don Larock explains that a Kypad is a paddleboard that can also be used as a kayak. It has a spot on the surface that you can sit on, and areas where you can brace your feet for more secure paddling. “A man in Gloucester, Massachusetts came up with the idea, and then sold his business to a California company,” says Don, “It’s

rated for up to 185 pounds, but the Kypad itself is only 20 pounds, which makes it easy to carry.” By next spring, the shop is hoping to add a smaller Kypad that’s rated for 135 pounds.

Don tells me that the fishing equipment and boat rentals are very popular with customers, but another big seller for the store is the custom Cornhole boards. The basic beanbag toss of long ago has been elevated to a serious sport in recent years, and it’s fun for all ages to play. The boards are beautiful, and the best sellers have the logos of Massachusetts sports teams on them, but a New Hampshire moose design is also popular, as is one with “Wolfeboro” printed on it. Other customers are drawn to the patriotic board featuring the American flag. For a real show-stopper, you can email any personal photo to Hole in the Wall, and in about a week to a week and a half, you’ll have your photo on a custom Cornhole board for yourself or to give

as a gift.

The cornhole bags are handcrafted to regulation, and Don makes a point of telling me that they shouldn’t be left outside. “Chipmunks will chew into the bags to eat the corn,” says Don, “and we had one woman come into the shop for more bags after her horse ate them.”

If you’re a cribbage fan, the store also sells a variety of custom cribbage boards, which can also be personalized with a photo. Don says, “We had one customer who ordered a cribbage board with a photo printed on it of him and his sons fishing.” What a great idea for a unique, personalized gift!

Cribbage is a great game for a rainy day, but Hole in the Wall has lots of other options to chase away those rainy day blues, like darts and dart boards.

For kids, there’s a wide selection of games for sale like Connect 4, Monopoly, Clue, and Battleship. You can also choose to purchase a classic comedy on DVD like Funny Farm or What About Bob? for laughs, or instead

choose a fishing video, and maybe pick up some pointers.

When the sun comes out again, head outside for a game of horseshoes or wiffleball, both available at Hole in the Wall. For fans of pickleball, the store has you covered with all of the equipment, including travel sets. In fact, Don says they’re working on getting the new Onix balls, because they’re quieter than the traditional ball, and customers have been requesting them.

That’s the great thing about a store like Hole in the Wall. Don says that they’re always updating their merchandise and adding to it, to accommodate customers. “We’ve even started stocking decorative items like salt and pepper shakers, candy dishes, wine bottle holders, and barbeque items,” says Don, “We’ve also started selling women’s shirts.” It sounds like there’s something for everyone at this unique store. You’ll even see chainsaw bear sculptures for sale, carved by a man from Massachusetts.

So, what’s on the horizon for Hole in the Wall? “In a couple of months, we’ll have all of our ice fishing equipment coming in, and we’ll still be selling live bait,” says Don, “and this year we want to build a few bob houses that customers will be able to rent.” Stay tuned!

Watch Artists Paint Local Scenes at August 17 Paint Wolfeboro Event Art lovers are encouraged to visit Wolfeboro on Wednesday, August 17, for the Governor Wentworth Arts Council’s seventh annual Paint Wolfeboro events. Area artists will gather at locations in downtown Wolfeboro for a day of open-air painting. Visitors can watch works of art being created and can purchase pieces either during the day or at an afternoon sale in Cate Park. Look for the artists around town in their yellow T-shirts.

Paint Wolfeboro runs from 10 am to 2 pm, with the sale scheduled from 2 to 3 pm at the Community Bandstand in Cate Park. Jeannine Revere, who plays in the Puckerbrush band will perform in the park from 2 to 3 pm and light refreshments will be served. Puckerbrush is a lively band of musicians who play acoustic music of Old Time, Celtic and French Canadian traditions.

Children can join in the outdoor painting fun by trying their hand at

watercolor painting in Cate Park from 11 to 2 pm. For a small donation, each child can create a painting to take home along with a watercolor kit for future fun. Children must be at least four years old and accompanied by an adult. Mouse prints will also be available from 11:30 to 1 pm.

Trish Jackson to Perform in Sandwich Advice To The Players Summer Concerts 2016 welcomes jazz singer Trish Jackson, accompanied by bassist and guitarist David Young, on Wednesday, August 17 at 7:30 pm at The Arts Center at 12 Main in Center Sandwich.

Trish Jackson got her start as a singer in the late 1970s and early 1980s as one of the original members of the professional teen theater company, The

Articultural Players. The company did several runs at The People’s Theater and The Alley Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and toured New England with their original musical productions over a seven-year period.

In her early 20s, Trish left the stage and the city, and with her husband, moved to New Hampshire to raise their two sons.

David Young is a much-sought-after

musician in addition to playing jazz guitar with Trish. He plays upright bass for The Moose Mountain Jazz Band, and also plays bass and guitar for several duos, trios and quartets in the Lakes Region. He teaches beginning piano to kids of all ages and all stringed instruments at String Thing Music, which he founded in Moultonboro, where his collaboration with Trish began during her son’s bass lessons.

Lessons Learned: Black-Hulled Schooner that Once Sailed the Lake

By Barbara Neville Wilson Do you remember it? The looming, gaff-rigged black schooner plying the waters of Winnipesaukee? Were you on the M/S Mount Washington when the captain pointed out the Peter Atwood on Alton trips? Did you look forward to seeing it every year? Do you miss it now it’s gone? And how the heck did a 2/3 replica of a mid-19th century sailing ship end up on Lake Winnipesaukee anyway?

These and many more questions will be answered at the screening of Atwood: Vessel of Life on Thursday, August 18 in Wolfeboro.

Winner of a S.N.O.B. award for best short documentary, Atwood… doesn’t just tell the story of another pretty sailboat. Through the making of the movie, a first-time filmmaker carries on the legacy built by his mentor, friend and video subject.

Present at the screening will be Alton’s Keith King, who oversaw the construction, sailing, and educational programming of the Atwood for 22 years, and director and producer, Chris Owen.

Keith started building the Atwood as a central element of the hands-on learning that marked the unique L.I.V.E. (Learning in Vigorous Environments) program he ran as a Physical Education professor at Keene State College. The full-semester, 12-credit class helped students build skills and confidence by living simply, working as a team, and grappling with problems that had no set solution. And in the late 1970s, it was a program in search of a project small enough to capture an individual’s

Keith found his long-sought project in early stage development at the Apprentice Shop in Bath, Maine. (The school has since moved to Rockland, Maine.) A schooner designed at 2/3 scale from authentic 19th century plans, it had been started by an apprentice who soon realized “he couldn’t both eat and build boats,” Keith says.

Relieved for it to have a chance at completion, the apprentice happily sold the nascent ship to the school for $1,500. Peter Atwood, a Keene alum and member of the informal Keith King fan club, loaded the keel, some ribbing and some planking, into his truck, and hauled it across two states at no cost to the school. Then the hard work began.

L.I.V.E. encouraged participants to move from a “What do I have to do?” to a “What can I do?” mindset.

Keith’s lessons required maximum

effort and often yielded little in instant satisfaction. He required students working on the boat to use hand tools, so they could get to know the wood and better understand its ways. Progress was slow, and some students became disenchanted by the lack of immediate and visible accomplishment, but arduous years and 52 volunteers later, the 40-foot boat—37 feet at the waterline—was christened and launched to be used for more than 20 years as an educational classroom on the lake.

Continuing in the L.I.V.E. spirit, youth from camps and classrooms, scout troops and recovery centers came aboard to practice making mistakes and solving problems. As Keith recounts in the film, there were no set rules on the boat, just mentorship and guides to good decision-making. He often answered questions with questions and goaded student sailors into doing their own thinking. He encouraged

young sailors to put themselves in new situations where there was no pat answer. Mistakes were opportunities to pick up new knowledge. “If you don’t learn from a mistake, why bother making it?” he says. “It was the best classroom I ever had.”

Chris Owen saw that classroom in action. The year was 1986, and he was director of out camping at Camp Merrowvista in Tuftonboro. Taking groups of campers out on the Atwood, he was amazed the huge boat was made by hand, and mostly by Keith, who had never made a boat before.

The story was “compelling,” and Keith a “magnetic person.”

In turn, Keith was drawn to Chris because “he was doing some things at Merrowvista, doing things a little differently that attracted my attention.”

Together, they agreed that “learning is messy, time consuming and dirty and noisy,” and most valuable when it wasn’t tied neatly with a bow. In ensuing years, Chris put lessons learned with Keith to work in his roles as teacher and as an ordained minister, and he found new lessons when they made contact again around 2010.

Chris recounts, “I drove in and was surprised to find the Atwood sitting on its side in the yard.”

Keith shares, “I had been sailing it for 22 or 23 years.” Maintenance was largely a solo effort, and while “salt water pickles wood, fresh water rots it,” and nearly 80 years old, he was finding “that damn thing was getting bigger every year” when it was time

“Fighting ‘Jane Crow’: African-American Women in WWII” Lecture at Wright Museum The Wright Museum will host the 13th session of the “Ron Goodgame and Donna Canney 2016 Educational Programming” on Tuesday, August 16, beginning at 7 pm. Doors open at 6 pm. Dr. Sarah Batterson will present a lecture titled, “Fighting ‘Jane Crow’: African-American Women in World War II.” During World War II, AfricanAmericans helped fight fascism and racism in Europe as factory workers, soldiers, sailors, airmen, and nurses while at the same time they were being continually subjected to segregation, violence, and prejudice at home. For African-American women, the wartime experience provided unprecedented job opportunities and improved financial stability, which essentially ended at the close of the war. By exploring individual

biographies and organizational histories, Sarah Batterson investigates the impact of World War II on AfricanAmerican women and assess how the war both expanded opportunities for women and exposed gender and racial prejudices, which set the groundwork for the Civil Rights Movements of the 1950s and 1960s.

Professor Sarah Batterson holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of New Hampshire and a joint-M.A. in Anthropology and Women’s Studies.

Admission is $8 per person and free for Wright Museum members.

Brewing in NH Program in Ashland Glenn Knoblock will present his illustrated program “Brewing in New Hampshire: An Informal History of Beer in the Granite State from Colonial Times to the Present” at 7 pm on Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the Ashland Booster Clubhouse. He will explore the history of the state’s beer and ale brewing industry from the home and tavern brewers of the Colonial period to today’s modern breweries and brewpubs, as well as society’s changing attitudes on beer and alcohol consumption.

Knoblock, the author of several

books on New Hampshire, maritime and military history, is the co-author, with James T. Gunter, of Brewing in New Hampshire, so he is well equipped to speak on the subject.

This free public program is funded by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council and is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Town Library, who will also serve light refreshments.

lessons they teach—to tell of a man who keeps on learning, even in the grievous process of letting go.

Strafford Wind Symphony Returns to Bandstand The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand welcome the Strafford Wind Symphony back to Cate Park on Saturday, Aug. 20, for the next show in the free summer concert series.

The group returns to the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee and is set to delight the crowd with patriotic numbers as well as a mix of traditional music for wind ensemble.

The Symphony is a 55-member group that meets weekly to rehearse in Rochester. The group includes musicians from all walks of life, and members travel from Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire to share their passion for music.

The group has performed numerous times at the Boston Festival of Bands held annually at Faneuil Hall Marketplace in June, and is also a big supporter of National Music in Our Schools Month, where the group performs concerts that are specifically geared toward young musicianship and often opens up the stage to share with young musicians.

In that same vein, the ensemble also opens its membership to talented high school students who want to broaden their musical horizons.

The band’s conductor and music director is Bruce Gatchell. He started as the assistant conductor in 1999 and became the music director in 2013. He has taught music in Rochester, Epping and Concord public schools and also taught at Plymouth State. He also has served for almost three decades as a teacher, conductor and counselor for the University of New Hampshire Summer Youth Music School. Now retired, he continues as music director

for the Leddy Center for the Performing Arts Broadway musical productions.

The Strafford Wind Symphony’s assistant conductor is Jeffrey Smith. He taught in Norwalk, CT public schools for 35 years and also taught at Western Connecticut State University. He also plays many Wednesday nights in the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand as part of the Cate Park Band. He regularly guest conducts on the middle and high school levels and is an active music arranger and marching band drill and visual designer.

The ensemble members believe in the power of music and share their commitment to music with the audiences they perform for each and every concert.

The Strafford Wind Symphony will be taking to the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand on Saturday, Aug. 20.

The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand are committed to bringing quality music to Cate Park each and every Saturday night in July and August, with concerts beginning at 7 pm each evening and featuring a wide variety of musical acts.

While the concerts are free, volunteers will “pass the buckets” during intermission to help raise funds to support the concert series, which continues to provide great entertainment at the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand. If bad weather threatens, a sign announcing the concert’s cancellation will be hung at the entrance to the park near the bandstand and that information will also be posted at wolfeborobandstand. org.

Lakes Region 37th Annual Fine Arts and Crafts Festival to be Held in Meredith Plans are now complete for the Lakes Region 37th Annual Fine Arts and Crafts Festival to be held in Meredith on Saturday and Sunday, August 27 and 28. The Festival, originally organized by local artists, has been sponsored by the Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce for the past 35 years and is held on the Main Street and amid the shops at the Mill Falls Marketplace. From the beginning, the show has attracted high quality artists and craftsmen and as a result of the support of Meredith Village Savings Bank, the Festival continues to be one of the most respected arts and crafts events in the Lakes Region.

The 80 juried artists and craftsmen will present high quality merchandise.

Featured in the craft category will be pottery, leather, wood products, weaving, quilting, metal sculpture, jewelry, baskets, dolls, and toys.

Artwork will include watercolors,

oil paintings, pen and ink drawings, photography, and theorem paintings.

Several artists will be demonstrating at the booths.

Live music will fill the air for those walking through the Festival.

Performing at this year’s event on both Saturday and Sunday will be Marc

Elbaum and Christine Chaisson, who will play jazz, classic rock and great American songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

At 11 am on Saturday, Simplicity The Clown will entertain the younger fairgoers as well as adults with comedy magic and balloon entertainment. The

afternoon entertainment both days will feature Ray Porcell, Phil and Janet Sanguedolce, and Jarrod Taylor playing and singing Classic Folk and Rock music.

Several Meredith organizations including the Kiwanis Club, the Sno Streakers Snowmobile Club and the Meredith Masons will be offering a variety of culinary delights. Included will be sandwiches, hot dogs, popcorn, homemade pies, and snow cones.

A shuttle van, sponsored by Lakes Region Airport Shuttle, will provide transportation to and from the Main Street from both the north and the south sides of Route 3. Gilford Summer Fair and Pancake Breakfast Mark your calendars so that you don’t miss the Gilford Community Church Summer Fair held on Friday, August 26 from 4 to 7 pm and on Saturday, August 27 from 7:30 am to 2 pm. The Annual Rotary Pancake Breakfast will be held at the Youth Center from 7 am until 10 am.

The fair will be held on church grounds, as usual, with live music, Chuck Wagon hamburgers and hot dogs, ice cream, and drinks. A White Elephant will be held in the fellowship hall of the church. A Silent Auction will be held in the Youth Center, along with the selling of Children’s toys and games.

The church is accepting donations for the White Elephant until August 22: books, stationery, puzzles, music,

movies, kitchen items, knick-knacks, baskets, fishing stuff, sporting goods, and outdoor items are all welcome.

Clean items, please, and no baby strollers, car seats, clothes, shoes, large electrical appliances, encyclopedias, exercise equipment, computers, televisions or suitcases (unless antique). Donated jewelry should be brought to the church office.

Let the church know if you have any items of value that you would like to donate to the Silent Auction. Small antiques or small fine furniture will be accepted, as well as collectibles.

Take the Kids on an Adventure at Gunstock Mountain

By Sarah Wright Gunstock Mountain Resort in Gilford has always been a great place to go camping, hiking, and fishing, but the resort is bursting with so many other fun options, too. From zip lining to Segway tours, there’s something for everyone.

Take the family to Gunstock for a day and add some exciting memories to your summer. Experience nature on a thrilling zip line tour. Travel over one and a half miles on the longest zip line tour in the continental United States.

From the summit of Gunstock, you’ll soar toward the top of Pistol. You can reach speeds of up to 70 miles per hour, or control your speed and stop to enjoy the spectacular views. The experienced guides will teach you how to use the equipment. Anyone age 10 and up can participate. Tours run every half hour from 10 am to 4 pm. If you love a challenge, then register for an Aerial Treetop Adventure on New England’s largest aerial obstacle course. Eight obstacle courses are suspended in the tree tops with 91 different challenges like log ladders, bridges, seesaws, swings, and zip lines. There is a course for adults, and one just for kids, so the whole family can get a fun workout.

On the adult course, you’ll progress from the easiest challenges on up, as high as you’d like to go. Participants can go through the course on the half hour from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Adventure Park guides will be on hand to make sure you understand how to safely navigate the courses.

For those in your family who are 14 years of age or older, don’t miss the chance to explore the cross-country trails of Gunstock on board an OffRoad Segway X2. A Segway is a 2-wheeled, self-balancing transporter.

Move the frame left or right to turn, or lean slightly forward or backward to move in those directions. Tours are offered on the hour at 10 am., 11am,

1 pm, and 2 pm, and helmets are provided. Come experience the best Authorized Off-Road Segway Tour in the Northeast.

Take a break, sit back, and relax on a 15-minute scenic lift ride to the summit of Gunstock Mountain. At the top, you can marvel at the amazing views of Lake Winnipesaukee, Mount Washington, and the Presidential mountain ranges. Choose to wander the hiking trails, or bring a picnic lunch and just enjoy the scenery. The lift operates daily through the summer months with the first ride at 10 am and the last at 4 pm Tickets are available in the Mountainside Outfitters Store, at the Welcome Center, or at the Adventure Center.

Enter the Discover Zone and experience even more. You’ll be amazed at how much you can do! You can launch yourself off of the Big Air Bag Ramp, challenge yourself with the Spider Climber bungee cord maze, take a ride on the 300-foot, summer tubing run, bounce on the Bungee Jumper, defeat the Climbing Wall, check your balance at the Slackline Park, or take a ride in a kayak or paddle boat. On a hot day, kids will love the Water Wars contraption. Shoot water balloons at each other with the slingshot-like device, or aim them at a target to

release a wave of water. Little ones will also enjoy the playground.

But wait, there’s more! Everyone will love the Stunt Jump, where you can live out your fantasy of being a Hollywood stunt performer and jump from a 12- or 20-foot platform into the Zero Shock Stunt Bag. If you’d like to go for a family bike ride, you can rent a trendy FatTire bike, BMX bikes, mountain bikes, or cruiser bikes.

The restaurant also serves Gifford’s ice cream and Capt’n Elis draft root beer.

Underground Railroad in NH On Thursday, Aug. 25, a fascinating talk titled The Underground Railroad in New Hampshire, will take place at 7 pm at the Centre Harbor Historical Society Schoolhouse Museum, 94 Dane Rd/Route 25B, Center Harbor.

The program is free and open to the public.

In the 1830s, New Hampshire was a hotbed of abolitionist activity. But the state had its struggles with slavery, with Portsmouth serving as a slave-trade hub for New England. Abolitionists such as William Lloyd Garrison, Nathaniel Peabody Rogers and Stephen Symonds Foster helped create a statewide antislavery movement.

Abolitionists and freed slaves assisted in transporting escapees to freedom via

the Underground Railroad.

The Coe House in Center Harbor was part of the Underground Railroad, and there were several stops in Sandwich, NH. Author Michelle Arnosky Sherburne uncovers the truth about slavery, the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist movement in New Hampshire. Three Generations Reunite in “Summer of Faith” at Little Church Theater What happens when three generations reunite? In the dramedy Summer of Faith, plenty of mishaps arise as, misfortunes and unfinished business as Eve, paralyzed by the recent loss of her husband, and Faith, an adored but bewildering granddaughter, spend a summer together on Cape Cod. According to playwright, Monique Devine, “The blend of comedy and drama in the show is a reflection of real life as families navigate through their ever changing relationships. This is a truly intergenerational piece and will be fun for all ages to see together.”

mother who “…collected all her life. I remember attending auctions when I was five years old,” she says. “Just the other day, I found a glass bowl” at the swap shop at the dump. “It was just like the five-cent glass bowl I got from the one-armed auctioneer” when she was a child.

Shirley’s mother was known by all the auctioneers, and was a fierce competitor if she found something she liked, especially lithographed toys. She designated a space in the family home for her collection, and though some pieces spilled over for décor in the dining and other rooms, her Toy Room was not a place for children to play.

Chicken salad? Would Shirley like that on a wheat, spinach, tomato or white wrap, multi-grain, white, whole wheat, rye bread or an English muffin? The local bread comes from Manna Mountain, and the bacon on my crispy chicken salad is locally raised by Lois, the owner.

Shirley grew up in Ashland, where her father ran the LW Packard woolen mill for 60 years. “At one time it was the seventh largest woolen mill in the world. High end cashmere,” but expiration of trade quotas in 2009 killed the oncethriving factory that employed 300 workers. “Around here, NAFTA is a nasty word,” the diminutive nonagenarian says between bites.

“There was a paper mill, too. The town was bustling. There were two or three grocers, two drugstores, doctors and dentists…and an overseer of the poor. Good people ran things, and we took care of our own,” she continues.

Shirley’s mother, Pauline, was a busy woman, raising four children with a 10-year age span between them, making all their clothing—“I didn’t have a ‘boughten’ snowsuit or anything until I was older.

“It was a big deal around here.”

Pauline would pull out vintage toys from her Toy Room, “It was full of trunks and boxes,” dress up Ashland children and give them toys to march with in the parade.

Shirley chuckles a little as she shakes her head. Pauline never let her own children play with her toy collection, but she let children ride the authentic velocipede in the parade.

Shirley stops Tabbii to ask about Sunday breakfast. Do they serve by 6:45? For six years, she and her boyfriend Russ have gone out to breakfast and Gamil’s menu looks tempting, but they have to be able to finish in time for her to get to choir practice and church some distance away.

Oh yes. They’re open from 6 am to 2 pm every day…although Tabbii isn’t there at opening time. She lives upstairs, and heavy foot traffic on the stairs prevents her from getting in early enough to open, she says wryly. Once manager at the local Cumberland Farms, she feels lucky this job came up when the convenience store closed.

For Pauline’s 80th birthday, Shirley took her to the Washington Dolls’ House and Toy Museum in Chevy Chase, MD, and there the idea was born to open a toy museum in Ashland. Over the course of two years, they worked with the Ashland Historical Society to buy and renovate “The Nook” in downtown Ashland, a house that had once housed the owners of the grand Endnor Hotel. In 1991, while Pauline wintered in Florida, Shirley sat on her mother’s kitchen floor, and inventoried and recorded every item in the collection.

She and volunteers worked feverishly, and on Mother’s Day they surprised Pauline with a perfectly displayed museum, complete with miniature kitchen • Toys Continued on page 35

and schoolroom.

“Mother didn’t like dollhouses or dolls,” says Shirley, but she and her sister “found a dollhouse at a sale” and convinced their mother that a toy museum “really should have dolls.” Pauline “hemmed and hawed” but finally bought it and “she had such fun furnishing that dollhouse. She furnished every bit of it.” It is the most prominent in a room full of domestic displays, perfectly outfitted to the finest details.

We are inside the historic Cape that houses the Pauline Glidden Toy Museum now, and I become a kid again. Shirley and the other museum volunteers provide opportunities for visitors to play with some toys, but respectfully request we not touch others. For the most part, people respect the rule, says Shirley, but one day, she noticed a miniature chamber pot missing from under the bed of one of the dollhouses.

She and staff searched high and low and were about to give up when Shirley spied it. Her eyes twinkle at the reveal. “It was on the cook stove in the kitchen. Can you just imagine if it were real…?”

As we wander the rooms, sometimes I gasp in recognition— the doll-sized irons and clothespins

are like ones my mother had, the tiny slide-desks in the perfectly appointed schoolroom, the games and tin toys I remember from my uncle’s stashes, the tin piano, the jackstones, the Sunbonnet Kids; and at other times, I simply am awed by the intricacy of toys that have survived, especially the case of mechanical Penny Toys.

Ever a fierce competitor, Pauline was first introduced to tin Penny Toys at the Chevy Chase museum.

Child hand-sized and originally costing just a penny, they feature clever mechanicals that run a simple train on a track or wind up a vehicle to cross a room. Pauline became determined to amass a collection to rival the one in Maryland, and auction goers were soon reminded—80+ years-old though she may have been--it was “silly to bid against my mother” when she really wanted something, says Shirley.

I yearn to spend more time in the attractively arranged, warmly lit rooms of the Pauline Glidden Toy Museum, but another appointment calls me away. I ask Shirley if she will open again another day. Of course, she assures me. Volunteers are scarce, but she’s happy to open if someone calls ahead. “I’m 90 • Toys Continued on page 37

New Hampshire Boat Museum and the Village Players Co-Host Film Presentation The New Hampshire Boat Museum and the Village Players are co-hosting a special screening of the film “Atwood,” the story of a schooner of the same name that was based in Alton Bay for over 25 years. The film chronicles the boat’s story and eventual demise.

The movie screening will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18 at 7 pm and costs $5 per person to attend.

The film “Atwood” debuted in 2014 at the Somewhere North of Boston, or SNOB, Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Documentary.

Film director Chris Owen of Wilton, New Hampshire filmed this 30-minute documentary with The Peter M. Atwood, a two-masted schooner and its owner, Keith King, as the centerpiece.

Keith King, now retired, spent a

career teaching students at Keene State College. There he met and became friends with his student, Peter Atwood. Their friendship continued after Atwood’s graduation and into his young adulthood. When King found an old schooner shell that he wanted his students to restore, it was Peter who hauled the schooner shell to Keene State.

More than 50 people, including residents of Keene and students, worked on the schooner skeleton with Keith King. Sadly, Peter Atwood died at age 31 from complications of an accident in the fall of 1980, just five years before the restored schooner was launched. To honor him and their friendship, the schooner was christened The Peter M. Atwood.

From the 1980s through the early 2000s, King sailed the schooner on Lake Winnipesaukee catching the attention of everyone who saw her.

Following the film’s showing, director Chris Owen and Alton resident Keith King, will answer questions from the audience.

Lisa Simpson Lutts, the Boat Museum’s Executive Director says, “We are thrilled to present this unique film on an iconic Lake Winnipesaukee boat. This has been a gratifying partnership with another Wolfeboro non-profit, the Village Players as we co-present this film.”

The Village Players air conditioned theater is located at 51 Glendon Street, Wolfeboro. Doors to the theater will open at 6 pm. Refreshments will be available for sale before and after the

film’s showing.

The Village Players is a nonprofit amateur community theater organization in Wolfeboro, NH. They present three to five productions a year including dramas, comedies, mysteries and major musicals at their own 200seat theater in downtown Wolfeboro.

MetroCast Hosts 18th Annual Robbie Mills Memorial Golf Tournament September 15 The annual Robbie Mills Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Thursday, September 15 at the Lochmere Country Club in Tilton. The event, which is hosted by the MetroCast Foundation, will benefit organizations that serve atrisk youth and other vulnerable groups in the region.

Now in its 18th year, the event began as an effort to honor the memory of Robbie Mills, a 14 year-old Laconia boy who was killed in 1997 for his trail bike by two older teens (Mills’ mother is a MetroCast employee).

In subsequent years, the number of organizations supported by the fundraiser expanded to include the Boys & Girls Club of the Lakes Region,

Greater Lakes Child Advocacy Center (Belknap-Merrimack Community Action Program), Spaulding Youth Center Foundation, Greater Lakes Region Charitable Foundation for Children (Children’s Auction), and more.

Last year’s event raised more than $26,000 in support of youth-serving organizations in the region.

Heart and Hands Thrift Shop Open For Business Three Meredith-area churches announce the newly formed ecumenical Heart and Hands Thrift Shop at 9 Maple St. in Meredith. This is a combined effort, run by volunteers, from the First Congregational Church, Trinity Episcopal Church and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

The goal is to have a thrift shop that will help those in the community that are most in need and allow others to share their abundance through donations. The shop will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 4

pm. Donated items are accepted during those hours.

The shop will accept items that are clean, in good shape and working, including clothing, footwear, accessories, dishes, pot/pans, utensils, jewelry, knickknacks, pictures, greeting cards, books, movies, music, towels, bedding, curtains, children’s clothing, toys, games (complete, with no missing pieces), seasonal décor, tablecloths, placemats, yarn, craft supplies, fabric, costumes, antiques, bureaus, small furniture, lamps, hand tools, instruments,
