Fourth of July Celebrations Around the Lake!

By Sarah Wright Happy Independence Day! The Fourth of July is one of the most popular times of year to be enjoying the Lakes Region. Everyone loves a good barbeque with family and friends, but the area also offers some of the best parades and fireworks shows around.

Celebrate the birth of our country at one of these fun events.

Cruise aboard the M/S Mount Washington on the Fireworks Dinner Dance Cruise and take in the magic of the lake on the night of the Fourth.

Enjoy dinner and dancing while the boat cruises the lake, scouting for local fireworks shows. Live music will be played on the main deck by local favorite, Annie and the Orphans.

Small boats light up the lake while waiting for the fireworks, and cast a beautiful glow on the water. The boat leaves from Weirs Beach at 7 pm on July 4, returning around 10 pm after the Meredith fireworks. For more information, call 603-366-5531 or visit www.cruisenh.com.

If you’re near Ossipee, the Annual th 4 of July Parade starts at 10 am with a community fair immediately following. Fireworks begin that night at 9:30 pm at Constitution Park. Call 603-539-1307 for details. Constitution Park is located on Long Sands Road in Center Ossipee.

Wakefield will celebrate the holiday on Saturday, July 1 at the ballpark.

Enjoy fun and games, a petting zoo, local food, and entertainment, starting at 6 pm. The fireworks show starts at

9:30 pm.

Center Harbor starts the holiday off with a footrace at 9 am for children and at 10 am for the five-mile race on July 4. Later on, celebrate at the town’s parade at 2 pm, and then enjoy a wonderful fireworks show over the harbor at 9:15 pm, after a 7 pm band concert. Visit www.centerharbornh. org. for details.

Ashland celebrates Independence Day at the L.W. Packard Ball Field, from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Enjoy live music, food, amusements, and fireworks on July 3. Then, on July 4, eat your fill at the Annual Pancake Breakfast fundraiser at 7 am at The

The parade in Laconia will begin at Wyatt Park on July 4th at 4:30 pm and process to Opechee Park. Live musical entertainment and food vendors will be at the park until 10 pm when the fireworks show begins. Call the Laconia Parks and Recreation Department for details at 603-524-0521.

If you’re in Moultonborough for July 4, the parade starts at 11 am at Blake Road, and ends at the Lion’s Club on Old Route 109. Following the

parade, there will be a complimentary barbeque cookout at the Lion’s Club.

Fireworks will begin at 9:30 pm at the Center Harbor Beach.

With one of longest parades in the state of New Hampshire, Wolfeboro’s parade starts at 10 am on North Main Street. See tractors, dancing, WWII vehicles, unicycling, and maybe a politician or two in this festive parade.

Fireworks over Wolfeboro Bay will begin at dusk after a band concert at the docks. Call 603-569-2200.

The 4th of July in Meredith begins with a chicken barbeque from 11 am to 2 pm at Hesky Park. The famous Rubber Duckie Race begins at 4 pm at the Mill Falls Marketplace in downtown Meredith, where you can try your luck at winning a prize, and the Brass Band will play in the park at 7 pm before a fireworks show at dusk. Gilmanton celebrates the 4th of July with all-day festivities including a parade at 10 am. The fireworks show is scheduled for Saturday, July 1 at 9:30 pm at Crystal Lake Park in Gilmanton Iron Works.

Tamworth Family Day happens on the 4th of July with a road race at 8:30 am, a parade at 11 am, and fireworks at 9:30 pm. Call Tamworth Parks and Recreation Department for locations of events at 603-323-7582.

Barnaby produces only small editions of her prints. Each print begins with at least four hand-carved wooden plates. The plates are then inked and printed in succession on an etching press. Closer examination of Barnaby’s prints reveals her attention to intricate detail that result in the fine quality of her work.

An award winning artist, Barnaby’s

prints are contained in both personal and corporate collections including those of United Parcel Service and Texas Instruments. She has won prizes for printmaking and one of her prints, Kink, is on exhibition at the Hawaii State Art Museum in Honolulu.

The Barnstormers Theatre opens summer season with Monty Python’s Spamalot The Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth is opening its 87th summer season of live, professional theatre with Monty Python’s musical comedy Spamalot, on stage from Thursday, June 29 to Saturday, July 8.

“Spamalot is a hilarious show, from start to finish,” said Bob Shea, the show’s director and Artistic Director of The Barnstormers Theatre. “With 18 actors playing an array of crazy characters, it definitely makes for a wild evening at the theatre.”

Full to the brim with the fun and humor Monty Python is known for, Spamalot tells the story of King Arthur, his faithful servant Patsy, and the creation of the Knights of the Round Table. Once the fabled knights Lancelot, Galahad, Robin, and Sir Bedivere are banded together, they join King Arthur in his search for the Holy Grail. Along the way, they are guided and distracted by a chorus of legless knights, some men in tights, The Lady of the Lake and her Laker girls, killer rabbits, musical-hating kings, and more than one visit from God. Returning to The Barnstormers stage for Monty Python’s Spamalot is Cheryl Mullings as the Lady of the Lake, Ryan Malyar as Patsy, Doug Shapiro as Sir Bedivere, and Amanda Huxtable in the

Ladies Ensemble. Newcomers to The Barnstormers include Jake Bridges as the Historian, Al Bundonis as King Arthur, Jordan Stanley as Sir Robin, Anthony J. Gasbarre III as Sir Galahad, and Robert Laurence as Sir Lancelot.

While a comedy to its core, the production also promises “some of the most unforgettable musical numbers you will ever see in the theater on this evening!” Nominated Spamalot is a rowdy, ridiculous, and all-out rollicking tale of swashbuckling merriment. The show is rated PG-11ish for some mildly suggestive behavior and just one swear word.

will be positioned throughout town in high visibility areas along Main Street, on the grounds of the Mill Falls complex and in the Hesky and Scenic lakeside parks. While some of the current sculptures will remain, those that have been part of the project for two years will be retired and new ones installed.

One of the most recently installed is “My Kismet Hops Frantically”, a painted steel kinetic sculpture of movement and balance. The sculptor, Waldo Jespersen, designed it using both a sketchbook and a computer.

The result is three arms with a circle atop them, perfectly balanced on pivot points making them susceptible to strong winds and curious people. As a result, the composition of the sculpture changes on a regular basis.

The concept for the Meredith Sculpture Walk began in 2012 with sculptural additions to the Courtyard on Main Street, a major GMP beautification project. Residents and visitors enjoyed them so much that the exhibit was extended throughout the town and the Meredith Sculpture Walk was launched.

Newcomers open up Saturday night concert series in Cate Park The 2017 Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand free summer concert series kicks off with some new faces on Saturday, July 1.

Cormac McCarthy, one of New England’s preeminent folk singer/ songwriters, will be joined by Mainesqueeze for the opening concert in the summer series.

McCarthy made his singing debut at the age of three on WKRC in Cincinnati, belting out Davy Crockett on his dad’s radio show. Some 20 years later he returned to public performance, this time singing his own compositions with a bit more experience.

While he was born in Ohio, McCarthy has been rooted in New England since he was 10 years old, growing up in towns where economies teetered on marginal sustenance from logging and paper and woolen mills. While the area was small, his musical influences were not, as his father’s love for jazz and classical music introduced him to a wide range of music. However, when his sister came home from college with the recordings of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and others, things clicked for McCarthy and he traded in his clarinet for a guitar.

During his college years, McCarthy studied literature and music and spent much of his time reading, playing guitar and working in the mills to pay for school. His college roommate encouraged him to make his music public and they shared local gigs and storytelling marathons.

McCarthy was nominated for both Outstanding Folk/Acoustic Act and Outstanding Folk/Acoustic Album by the Boston Music Awards for his album “Troubled SLEEP.” He was asked to perform in Boston’s WUMB Folk Radio 10th anniversary celebration and has performed on the Newport Folk Festival stage three times and has

Mainesqueeze is a mix of rhythm and roots, Texas swing, folk, country and more with three-part harmonies, hot guitar and pedal steel.

The band is led by vocalists Sammie Haynes (McCarthy’s wife) and Doug Bennett, while Bruce Derr provides pedal steel and Jonathan Booth plays bass and lead guitarist.

Haynes is an award-winning children’s music songwriter and performer with sultry and spirited vocals with a folk/country and blues influence.

Bennett, who also plays guitar and bass, was the lead singer in popular seacoast-based group Doc Johnson Blues Band and in his younger days made his name with the Fleet Street Shuffle and the duo Bennett and Lawson.

Derr is one of the area’s most soughtafter pedal steel and session players.

With his creative and impeccable playing, he can also be seen playing guitar or lap steel with Slaid Cleaves as well as with Lex and Joe, Joyce

Booth is a graduate of the Berklee School of Music and is equally

He was lead guitarist for Terri Bright and the Motives in the 1980s and also performed in the duo Booth and Whyte.

Drummers for the band include Jamie DeCato, Jon Ross, Joe Rogers, Robbie Kneeland or Ray Brunelle, while Kent Allyn often joins the band on keyboards.

The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand summer concert series takes place each Saturday night throughout the summer from 7 to 9 pm in Cate Park. The concerts are free of charge, though a pass-the-bucket offering is taken at intermission.

In the event of bad weather, a cancelled sign will be posted at the entrance to the park near the town docks; wolfeborobandstand.org will also include an update.

A Summer of Fun at Lost River Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves in North Woodstock is rolling into summer with some new programs involving local wildlife. Kate Wetherell, General Manager of Lost River, is enthusiastic about the attraction’s collaboration with the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, featuring live animal exhibits, natural science educational programs, and a public garden.

“We’ll have a lot of excitement here at Lost River this summer,” Wetherell said. ‘We’ve already had owls here visiting with our guests and we look forward to the Science Center sharing hawks, mammals, and reptiles during their upcoming programs.”

grams on Wednesdays at 10:30 am on June 21, July 12, August 23, and Saturday, September 9.

“These programs are both fun and a great learning experience for our guests,” said Wetherell. “The knowledgeable naturalists will be hosting topics on animal behavior, animal habits, and general information on New Hampshire’s distinct wildlife.”

Something else to watch for this summer is the construction of the new Bird’s Nest Lookout at Lost River Gorge, which will offer visitors a bird’s-eye-view of the Pemigewasset Valley from the top of Kinsman Notch.

Jennifer has been an artist in many mediums throughout her life, but has especially enjoyed working with fabrics.

The first lecture takes place on Monday, June 26 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm and will feature fine art photographer, Paul Wainwright, who specializes in traditional, wet-process photography.

He produces museum quality prints for exhibition and collection, and his portfolio includes interpretive images of landscapes and historic architecture.

Paul will discuss his artistic vision and creative processes. He will demonstrate his large-format camera, which uses 4” x 5” sheet film that is processed in a wet darkroom. You will learn about the steps involved in creating “traditional” photographs. Samples of his work will

be on display.

All lectures in the series are free and open to the public, and will be held at the Meredith Community Center, 1 Circle Drive in Meredith, NH. The second lecture features John Layton on July 24; the third lecture features Nan Scull on August 21, and the final lecture features Bonnie Edwards on September 11.

The mission of the League of NH Craftsmen is to encourage, nurture and promote the creation, use and preservation of fine contemporary and traditional craft through the inspiration and education of artists and the broader community. All demonstrations are free and open to the public.

Rotary Riverside Park Concerts The Putnam Fund presents the Music on the River concert series in June, July and August at Rotary Riverside Park and Gazebo next to the historic Belknap Mill in downtown Laconia.

Boat Museum Seeks Donations and Consignments For Auction Do you want to sell your boat or vintage car this summer? The New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro has the perfect venue at their New England Vintage Boat Auction, which takes place on Saturday, July 15 on the Museum grounds starting at 10 am.

The Museum actively seeks consignments and donations for the auction, which is the Museum’s largest fundraiser of the year. A wide variety of boats, vintage cars, and boat or lakerelated items are sold at this auction that draws hundreds of bidders. It’s a great way to purchase or sell a boat or car.

To help you effectively sell your boat, the Museum has online auction listings at www.nhbm.org with photos and detailed descriptions. The sooner your item is listed, the more chances you will have of selling your boat or car. Individuals are encouraged to contact the Museum early to finalize their consignment or donation.

A typical selection of boats the Museum seeks for auction includes wooden, vintage or classic, fiberglass, canoes, sailboats and kayaks in conditions ranging from excellent to good. The Museum also sells small items such as outboard motors and boating accessories that have been donated to the auction.

In addition, items including rustic camp items or lake memorabilia, water skis, camp tables, chairs, stools, lamps, decoys, and decorative items such as lake prints and watercolors are sold.

This auction always has something for everyone.

Great Waters Presents Neil Berg’s 102 Years of Broadway Neil Berg’s widely acclaimed 102 Years of Broadway, a musical revue of Broadway’s most celebrated shows, featuring a dazzling cast of five Broadway stars accompanied by an allstar New York band, is coming to the Kingswood Arts Center in Wolfeboro on Friday, June 30 at 7:30 pm. According to San Francisco’s KABC radio theater critic, Jerry Friedman, “This revue features some of the best songs from the best Broadway shows, all sung by some of the most talented performers working today singing many of the hit songs that they have sung on Broadway.”

102 Years of Broadway recreates the greatest moments from the finest shows of the century featuring the actual stars of shows such as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, CATS, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Jekyll & Hyde.

The amazing performers light up the stage with songs from the hit shows in

which they starred. Neil Berg presents brilliantly revived arrangements of Broadway classics, as well as thrilling numbers from Broadway’s newest hit shows.

“They were amazing! I feel like I just left a Broadway theatre! You have to bring them back to Wolfeboro!” said a concertgoer. And so, Great Waters Music Festival is doing just that. In addition to Berg, the very talented all-star cast includes Broadway actors Danny Zolli, Carter Calvert, Rita Harvey, William Michals, and Craig Schulman.

Neil Berg is the creator and co-producer of 102 Years of Broadway, now the numberone Broadway touring concert in the

United States. His accomplishments are numerous, and he has composed several musicals, including the offBroadway musical hit The Prince and the Pauper, which ran for two years at the Lambs Theater in New York City.

He is also the composer of the new Broadwaybound musical Grumpy Old Men, which had its out of town tryout at the Manitoba Theater in Winnipeg in October, and he is currently collaborating with Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Robert Shenkkan on a new rock musical The 12. In addition, his credits include the music for The Man Who Would Be King, Tim and Scrooge,

Heidi and Hexed in the City. In 1995, Neil received the 1995 Bistro Award for Best Musical for his show Asylum in the Nights, a revue of Neil’s theater music. He has produced over 1,000 Broadway concerts worldwide, with such stars as Michael Crawford, Bernadette Peters, Ben Vereen, Liz Callaway and Rita Moreno.

In 2010, the Rockland Family Shelter honored Neil along with Academy Award winning actress Ellen Burstyn with the Distinguished Citizen’s Award for his efforts on behalf of abused women. He has also been honored as Rockland County’s American Red Cross Man of the Year and this past spring Berg was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.

Gilford Farmer’s Market Is Open Those who love fresh produce, handmade goods and live music should head to the pretty little village of Gilford on Saturdays from 9 am to noon for the Gilford Historical Society farmer’s market at the Historic 1838 Benjamin Rowe House on Belknap Mountain Road. The market is held every Saturday morning through September 26.

The market is hosted by the Thompson-Ames Historical Society, and has

become a very popular summertime happening. Locals and vacationers alike have become accustomed to stopping by the market to shop for fresh veggies and baked goods and to browse for gifts and handmade items.

The Farmer’s Market also is a great place to bump into friends and neighbors for some socializing.

The market was the idea of Society member Carmel Lancia to help raise funds for the Historical Society.

He has shared the concert stage with some of the world’s most renowned performers including Linda Eder, Jose Carreras and Peter Frampton. Danny has had the honor of supporting several national charities by taking part in many fund raising benefit concerts for such organizations as The American Red Cross, The American Cancer

Carter Calvert knew early on in life that she would spend a career pursing the arts. A graduate from the School for the Creative and Performing Arts, Calvert is best known for her role in It Ain’t Nothing but The Blues on Broadway. 10th Anniversary Season Kicks Off at Interlakes Summer Theatre on July 5!

The Interlakes Summer Theatre (ILST), a professional summer stock theatre company in Meredith, will open its season with the Andrew Lloyd Webber gem, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The production will be directed by homegrown talent, Michael David Stoddard, returning to New Hampshire to direct and choreograph the production. The company is made up of 19 interns, all of whom are enrolled in professional college musical theatre programs, as well as two professional actors, and one local celebrity, Chance Dawson, age 13, from Moultonborough Academy (playing the youngest brother, Benjamin.)

Boston Conservatory student Rachel Wirtz will play the role of the Narrator, and returning ILST intern and Ithaca College student, Corey Kline, will play the title role of Joseph. Common Man To Host 12th Annual Winnipesaukee Wine Festival Fundraiser The Common Man family in New Hampshire is hosting its 12th annual charitable Winnipesaukee Wine Festival featuring samples of more than 100 wines, beers and spirits from around the world to benefit Girls at Work, Inc. A partnership between The Common Man Family of Restaurants and The Martignetti Companies of New Hampshire, the festival takes place on Thursday, June 29 from 5:30 to 8 pm in the Winnipesaukee Ballroom at Church Landing on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in Meredith.

The event is sponsored by Meredith Village Savings Bank, with promotional support from Venture Print Unlimited, Inc. in Plymouth.

Featuring wine, craft beer and spirits from local, national and international producers, the event includes a VIP room in the Carriage House at Church Landing, offering exclusive wines and a commemorative glass.

Art at the Gafney Fundraiser Thirty-two artists have donated 36 pieces of artwork for the 9th annual “Art at the Gafney” June and July fundraiser at the Gafney Library at 14 High Street in Sanbornville. Each artist has a minimum of two pieces on display – one for show or sale, and the other a donated piece to the Gafney as a raffle item.

Loon Chicks Expected to Hatch Soon on Live Loon Cam The Loon Preservation Committee’s (LPC) live webcam has been streaming since the first egg was laid on May 21.

On average, a pair of loons will incubate their eggs for 28 days; however, some loon nests have hatched after only 25 days, so viewers should tune in now!

This is the fourth time LPC has shared the live feed with the public, but the webcam has exceeded expectations this year. A new, high-definition camera is providing a crisp image and the live stream has reached people around the world. To date, viewers from 141 countries and all 50 states have tuned in to watch the loon cam. LPC’s webcam is averaging 7,000 views per

day, which is five times higher than last year.

“The YouTube chat room is always bustling with activity when I log in,” says Biff Conrod, LPC Loon Cam Blogger. “The viewers seem to have adopted the nesting pair and are rooting for a successful hatch.”

LPC biologists banded both adults with unique combinations of color bands and LPC has confirmed that it is the same pair of loons as in 2016.

The female loon of this pair has been breeding on the pond since she was originally banded in 1998. Since the earliest known breeding age for loons is four years and the average age at

6th Annual Yakking for Loons Dust off your kayak and join the Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) for the 6th Annual “LPC Kayak-A-Thon” or “Yakking for Loons” to be held on Friday, July 7. Paddlers will meet at 8 am at Lee’s Mill Landing on Lake Winnipesaukee, just down the road from the Loon Center in Moultonboro. Choose between the 2.5 mile “Ganzy” course or the 4.6 mile “Green’s Basin” course, or you can choose to do both. An LPC biologist will be along for the ride to answer your questions and point out local loon habitat and behavior.

Sponsoring this year’s event are Curt’s Caterers and Irving Oil Corporation.

The registration fee is $12/person and includes a light lunch generously prepared and donated by Curt’s Caterers. An adult must accompany children under 18 years of age. Yakkers are en-

couraged to solicit additional pledges to benefit the work of the Loon Preservation Committee, now in its 41st year of protecting loons and their habitats in New Hampshire. Veteran’s Reflections, History Preserved, will be presented by William Graser with an author’s lecture and book signing. Veteran’s Reflections is a product of nearly eight years of interviews that provide a snapshot of American military history from World War II to the end of the Cold War. Sixty veterans who served during WWII, the Cold War, Korean War, Vietnam War, The Korean DMZ Conflict, Operations Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) recall their

time in uniform. Their stories are both funny and heart wrenching, providing an excellent opportunity to gain an understanding and appreciation of what it means to be an American veteran devoted to freedom. With insight and attention to detail, Graser expertly weaves the veteran’s firsthand accounts and personal stories into a historical overview of each specific conflict.

Sergeant First Class William R. Graser, USA (Ret.) served in the US Army Security Agency. Among his assignments were Korea, Vietnam, Thailand and Germany, including West Berlin. He was also stationed at the Army Security Agency’s headquarters in Arlington, VA. He was awarded the Legion of Merit Award for his service

M/S Mount Washington’s Sunset Dinner Dance Cruises season has begun Enjoy a romantic evening cruising Lake Winnipesaukee aboard the M/S Mount Washington. Dinner dance cruises include a delicious buffet dinner and dancing to live music. Swing to the tunes of the fabulous ’50s; revisit the ‘60s or get out your platform dancing shoes for the Mount’s ’70s disco night. Whatever your taste or favorite era, the popular themed cruises have something for you. During July and August dinner dance cruises take place on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings.

Monday night dinner dance cruises leave from Weirs Beach and go from 6-9 pm. Guests can enjoy the music of some of their favorite eras with swing to oldies; rock, roll and remember; Elvis tributes, and a Beach Boys tribute.

We married in 1970, went to free music concerts in the park and to craft shows wherever we found ourselves on a Saturday. We furnished our house with handmade lamps and shelves and artwork we found at reasonable prices and we had the opportunity to chat with the artisans who created the artwork. I

was a frustrated potter with no studio at the time and loved hearing the artists talk about their techniques. We found that artists at craft shows were always happy to share their talents with us. It was exciting to own a piece that was created by someone we got to know.

June 26, 2017 • Artists Continued from page 36 school when we had the opportunity to choose any art class. It was messy and meditative and working on the potter’s wheel made me happy. I didn’t get the chance to take another pottery classes until years later when the stars aligned; my first child was in nursery school and my husband and I had just bought a used second car. But the icing on the encouragement cake which brought me back to the craft I’d loved so much as a teen, was the fact that the Silvermine School for the Arts was less than half an hour away.

Soon my hands were back in clay and I was content. In subsequent years

and ensuing homes, my husband made sure he always created a small studio where I could work when my babies were sleeping, and later when they were at school.

And then we moved to Wolfeboro and discovered Doug Blum, a master potter and one of the artists responsible for the advancement of the American Craft Movement, was living nearby. I was blown away by his artwork, and recognized some of his work from pottery magazines I’d subscribed to in the 1980’s and 90’s.

He is a free spirit who in the early 1970’s wandered into the art department at his alma mater and decades later had work exhibited at the Smithsonian. In fact, his work has been shown in every

metropolitan city in America, as well as in Switzerland and Saudi Arabia.

I started picking Doug’s brain about my work and realized that it’s not every day a pottery student finds a master potter living nearby who is willing to teach! I understood that by taking his classes, he could help bring my skills to the next level.

We so rarely get to see artists at work, but Doug welcomes aspiring potters and interested visitors to watch while he creates one of his lovely pieces. When Winnipesauke Pottery is open, Doug is more than likely at his wheel working on a project, either for his gallery, or a commissioned piece.

How odd that artists used to be treated reverentially but are now hardly

recognized. Original works of art were prized possessions, but cheap pottery is being mass-produced and imported, potters and other craftspeople are only found in places where the communities can support their art. Mass produced wares are cheap commodity, but they aren’t art, and they do nothing for the soul.

Support your local artisans, or not only will such talented people become scarce, they will become obsolete.

Strike Up the Band at Area Bandstand Concerts

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper They’re free and they’re fun. They provide a variety of music in the great outdoors where everyone is welcome.

“They” are the many community bandstand concerts that take place all over the Lakes Region each summer. Grab a lawn chair or blanket for seating/relaxing and sit back for some great music; many concert series also offer concessions so you can get a snack and drink while enjoying the music.

The Weirs Community Park offers free outdoor concerts at 6 pm on select Saturdays in July, August and September. On July 8, Robert Clarks will be the entertainment; on August 26, the Bel Airs will perform and on September 9 the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center will offer a program for children. the place to be for a series of great free outdoor concerts. The Belknap Mill has coordinated the concert series, and the Mill is located right next to the park.

In the event of rain, concerts will be held inside the Mill on the third floor.

Each show kicks off at 6:30 pm. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating.

On June 30, the Carter Mountain Brass Band will perform. Under the direction of Mike Mikuski, the band will offer a diverse program, including marches to traditional overtures, and numbers highlighting the musicianship of individual instrumentalists and sections of the band, to toe-tapping popular tunes.

The Michael Vincent Band is a wellknown group that will return to Rotary Park on July 7. The band is a group of friends that have been playing together since 2005. They list countless musical influences, some of which can be heard in their own music. Artists such Steve Ray Vaughan were very influential early on, but as they grew they progressed to the older blues with artists such as Otis Rush, Johnnie Taylor, Buddy Guy, and Freddie King and B. B. King. Tab Benoit, Doyle Bramhall Jr. and Warren Haynes are some newer artists that have also been inspirations for the band. The Michael Vincent Band has found that home is where the

blues is, and they thrive on playing the music they learned from listening to other artists they revere and look up to.

The 39th Army Band NH National Guard will perform on July 20. The band has represented the United States of America overseas on missions that have included St. Croix, Virgin Islands, and Athens, Greece and as Good Will Ambassadors to the country of Costa Rica in July 1995. The band is comprised of musicians representing many communities throughout the state who are dedicated soldiers and whose high standards of performance is respected and anticipated wherever they play.

The band performs military marches, pop and jazz music.

The Freese Brothers Big Band was formed in 1982 by the Freese Brothers: Jack, Bill, George and Courtland, who began playing music together in a family performing troupe in the 1930’s.

The purposes of the Band are to support and encourage the development of the musical talents of the public (especially young musicians) and its members, and to foster an appreciation of music of all eras. They will perform at Rotary Park bandstand on August 11.

One of New England’s favorite rock and roll acts, Annie & the Orphans have been entertaining fans, young and old, for over 50 years. They will close out the season on August 25. Their mission is simple but admirable. “Please the crowds. Make them feel good. Make them happy.” Specialists in 50s, 60s and 70s rock and roll the band entertains audience members with songs such as “The Wanderer”, “Mustang Sally” and “Rock Around the Clock”.

On Aug. 12, Belmont celebrates its Old Home Day and two concerts are scheduled: the Tyler Road Band will perform folk/bluegrass at the Bandstand on Mill Street from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. The B Street Bombers will bring their musical sounds to the Bryant Field on Rt. 106 in Belmont from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.

In Tuftonboro, an outdoor concert series bring a variety of musical sounds to the area. Concerts take place at 19 Mile Bay Beach Pavilion on Bay Road in Tuftonboro and are free. The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand will present a season of concerts in the park each Saturday in July and August in the bandstand in Cate Park in Wolfeboro from 7 to pm. The concerts are free to the public, though a pass-the-bucket offering is taken at intermission for those wishing to support the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand,

The summer series will begin with a new act, as Cormac McCarthy with Mainesqueeze on July 1. Following on July 8 will be Acoustic Radio; on July 15, By Request will make its bandstand return after debuting last year; a local favorite returns to the bandstand on July 22, as Moose Mountain Jazz performs. 60s Invasion will perform on July 29. The Freese Brothers Big Band will return to the bandstand on Aug. 5. Newcomers to the bandstand on Aug. 12 will be Clyde Bisbee and the Wheelhouse Revelers. The Seldom Playrights are an experienced group of musicians brought together by their love of old school country and American roots music, as played by the likes of Merle Haggard, George Jones, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, Ray Price and more. They will be at the bandstand on Aug. 19.

The Strafford Wind Symphony will perform on Aug. 26, and the final concert of the season will take place on Sept. 2, as Studio Two – The Beatles Tribute comes to town.

On Friday, June 30 at 7:30 pm, New Hampshire Public Radio host Sam Evans-Brown will visit the barn to talk about his weekly show, “Outside/In”, which explores the

wonder of snow fleas, magic soybeans, puddles, moose, birds, and sicko ultramarathoning. He’ll also discuss how NHPR and other public radio stations have helped reinvent “radio” in recent years, creating a bevy of new shows, even as skeptics have suggested that

Upcoming programs for the public include the documentary film: “Democracy Through the Looking Glass” on July 8 at 7:30 pm. The film is a new documentary by Kevin Bowe, and it dives deep into the rabbit hole of the 2016 New Hampshire primary to portray how polarized and hateful American politics has become in an era of fake news and lightning-fast social media. Following the 75-minute film, there will be a discussion featuring Bowe and Gilmanton resident/Boston University political scientist Virginia Sapiro asking how today’s citizens can engage in civil discourse and build harmony across party lines. Attendees are encouraged to bring an appetizer to share or, alternatively, a friend whose politics differ from their own.

On July 22 at 7:30 pm, a talk/ slideshow by photographer Hector Emanuel will take place. As he grew up in Lima, Peruvian-born photographer Hector Emanuel regarded Lake Titicaca, which straddles the Peruvian-Bolivian border high in the Andes, as a timeless, almost mythical place. More recently, he’s made six extended trips to the lake to record the festivals and daily lives of the Aymara and Quechua Indians living on the shores—and to connect with the spirit of his great-great-grandfather Carlos, a photographer and musician who lived by Lake Titicaca in the late

19th century. Emanuel will discuss his Lake Titicaca project and other work, including his coverage of the Colombian civil war, which has earned him awards from the National Press Photographers Association and the World Press Photo Foundation.

The Scriven Arts Colony will offer a free one-hour yoga class each Saturday at 9 am titled Got Yoga? Set in a charismatic circa 1790 barn, the classes will be taught by Jade Badger, a one-time Gilmanton resident now moving back to town as she and her new husband, Bobby, build a home on Crystal Lake.

Currently a teacher in training at Yogaworks, in Boston, Badger has been practicing yoga for 17 years.

Her classes will integrate Hatha and Vinyassa Flow as they focus on deepening the connection between mind, body, and breath. “It’s great to be back in Gilmanton,” she says. “I hope my class will bring together yogis of all abilities.”

Badger is an avid distance runner. Her son, Beck, is one of New Hampshire’s top high school swimmers, and her son, Bode, is an award-winning skier.

If you have a yoga mat and props, please bring them. The Scriven Arts Colony will have a small batch of mats and props on hand for people who don’t have any. Donations are encouraged but not required.
