Story and Photos by Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Either you love motorcycles or you don’t. There seems to be no middle ground. Those that love motorcycles embrace the speed and the open-air, open-road nature of bikes.

Mike Hashem has a long-standing love of motorcycles; it has been that way since he was a teenager. Today Mike is the owner of The Old Post Office Antiques in Ossipee, specializing in older firearms and military items. The shop is full of military and firearms items and Mike is the go-to guy when it comes to buying, selling and collecting in this specialized field of antiques.

But it is motorcycles that bring a big grin to his face and it doesn’t take much to get him talking about his passion for older bikes. Indeed, just step into the shop and you will see a wonderful example of Mike’s interest in collecting and restoring old motorcycles.

In the shop’s picture window a 1926 Harley Davidson 12cc Model JD holds pride of place. It isn’t shiny and it isn’t repainted in a bright color but that is the beauty of the old bike. Mike has restored it but not taken away its road warrior appeal and style. “This was the biggest Harley Davidson of the line in that time period,” Mike says.

The JD, along with other motorcycles Mike has collected and restored over the years, is not just a show piece.

“I drive all the motorcycles I own,” he explains, “and I have had a lot of motorcycles over the years – I would

say about a hundred bikes.”

That is a staggering amount of motorcycles and it would make even such motorcycle afficidionados as Mike and Frank of television’s Great American Pickers, (a show about two collectors who roam the country in search of vintage/antique items with an emphasis on old motorcycles) stand up and take notice.

“I bought my first motorcycle at age 20,” Mike recalls. “In the antiques business there are always a lot of antique motorcycles around. In the 1960s, when I was young, not many people cared about old motorcycles.”

Mike is referring to the late 1960s, a time when motorcycles were way down on the popularity scale in favor of VW Bugs and hippie vans. Thus, Mike, who saw the worth in old motorcycles even then, was able to pick up old bikes for low prices.

Over the years, he has collected and restored mostly Indian and Harley bikes, with a few foreign models thrown in. “I ride them all,” he reiterates.

An example of an antique Mike bought at a great price was a 1939 Harley Davidson side car rig with 5,000 original miles that he purchased for just $800.00. (“I have always wanted a motorcycle with a sidecar,” he says with a smile.) Anyone who knows about old motorcycles will know Mike got the side car rig at a good price.

Mike learned to rebuild the old motorcycles in his possession out of necessity because in the 1960s, parts

were more difficult to find as well as mechanics to work on the bikes. “Now it isn’t hard to get parts,” he adds.

in his shop or in his home and they become almost like pieces of furniture.

Mike’s collection has expanded and it is easy to see how that might be. As an active antiques dealer as well as a lover of old motorcycles, he comes across not only old bikes but memorabilia as well. He points to a glass case full of small items that echo the earlier days of Bike Week in the Lakes Region. A clear glass ashtray has the words Gypsy Tour 1952 with the AMA emblem; badges dated 1917 are from the Motorcycle Gypsy Tour among other small bike collectibles.

The collection has expanded to

include somehting very unusual: a complete set of NH motorcycle license plates from 1905 to the present day.

“Back when I started collecting you could find stuff like this and sometimes I got things by the truckload,” Mike

Nevertheless, it took Mike about 30 years to find all the old motorcycle license plates. Along the way, he learned a lot about the various dates and designs of the old plates. For example, he says that the years from 1905 to 1911 saw the license plates without dates in NH; in 1912, 1913 and 1914 so few motorcycles were owned in NH that the state allowed bike owners to make their own license plates!

Mike was involved heavily in the effort to get antique motorcycle license plates in NH and in 1979, he managed to obtain plate #1.

Because he is quite knowledgeable about old motorcycles, Mike can answer a number of questions, such as who owned early bikes and just how popular were they in the 1920s and beyond?

“Back when motorcycles were first around, they were used by police departments. And they were ridden by Mom and Pop types. In the late 1920s, there was great prosperity before the crash and Great Depression, so more people could afford motorcycles.”

Mike mentions that the motorcycle in his antiques shop, he has learned from research, originally came with green paint and red pinstripes.

He bought the bike in 1975 in Brockton, Mass. and has been running it since then.

Although he is busy with his militrary and firearms antiques shop, he says bike collectors often stop by to see him as well. “I’m the ‘old guy’ now in the world of motorcycle collecting!” he says, referring to the number of years and the experience he has in antique bikes.

“Bikes are a hobby for me,” he explains. And what is the bike he would most like to own if there was no limit? He answers readily, “If money was no object, I would own a

Cleveland Torinado from 1929. It was one of the first bikes to be advertised as being able to go 100 mph right out of the box. It was a four cylinder bike.”

Mike is very involved in the world of antiques and readily gives of his expertise and time for worthy projects. He sits on the board of the Wright Museum in Wolfeboro, and his knowledge of World War II military items (the era the museum is focused upon) is very valuable to the museum’s staff.

Indeed, Mike will be offering a program at the museum on June 16 at 7 pm titled World War II Motorcycles.

Mike will talk about the brands of motorcycles produced during World War II. He will explain how they were used during the war and why they were slowly phased out because of the creation and production of the Jeep. Mike also will demonstrate the full operation of the Harley WLA motorcycle, which is in the Wright Museum’s collection. All of the other motorcycles in the museum’s collection will be on display for the program.

“Most people do not know how the old motorcycles were operated with a foot clutch and a hand shift,” he says.

“I will explain what a spark advance is among other topics.”

Along with dealing in antique military and firearms, and collecting and restoring motorcycles, Mike plays the banjo so well that he was the 1985 U.S. Open banjo champion.

“I’ve been playing banjo all my life and now I am a journeyman’s banjo player,” he adds.

Anyone who loves military memorabilia and firearms will enjoy a visit to The Old Post Office Antiques in Ossipee.

And if you love old motorcycles, the icing on the cake is a chance to discuss old bikes with an expert. Mike has owned, restored or seen many of the antique motorcycles in circulation and he is always ready to pull up a chair, maybe put his feet up and rest them on the motorcycle in the shop and spend some time talking motorcycles.

A Walk Back in Time The Secrets of Cellar Holes Northern New England is full of reminders of past lives – stonewalls, old foundations, or an old lilac struggling to survive as the forest reclaims a oncesunny dooryard.

On Mon., June 8 at 6:30 pm in the Taylor Community’s Woodside Building in Laconia, Adair Mulligan will explore the story behind such abandoned places and discuss how one town has set out to create an inventory of its cellar holes, piecing together the clues left behind on the landscape.

Mulligan has a runaway curiosity about the natural and cultural history of northern New England. She is author of The Gunstock Parish, A History of Gilford, New Hampshire, as well as being a contributor to a number of publications. She writes the quarterly Lyme Historian newsletter and is coleading a project to survey the town’s many cellar holes.

The program is free and open to the public and made possible through a grant from the NH Humanities Council.

Interlakes Theatre to Present Bob Montana Musical The Interlakes Summer Theatre, located in Meredith, is teaming up with the family of Bob Montana to present a staged reading of a musical written by Montana (he created the characters for the Archie comic strip).

The Village Players of Meredith originally produced the musical in the 1950s. Titled Mutiny on the Mount (with book and lyrics by Bob Montana, and music by Sir Arthur Sullivan of Gilbert and Sullivan and H.M.S. Pinafore fame), the play is set in the Weirs Beach, NH area during the Roaring 20s.

The show will be presented on July 20 at both a matinee and evening show, and tickets will be $20.00.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Meredith Historical Society.

Lynn Montana, daughter of the famous artist, and Nancy Barry, Interlakes Producing Artistic Director, are actively seeking photographs of the original cast members and the production itself. The Interlakes Summer Theatre is collecting photographs of the cast members (during that time or later) either

from the actors themselves or their families or friends.

The Rockin’ Daddios is a four-man acappella group that performs Doo Wop and more. They sing music from the 40s, including Old Shanty Town, Downtown Strutters Ball, and It`s a Sin to Tell a Lie, as well as many songs from the 50s and 60s. With the accent

on fun, the Rockin’ Daddios will tell stories about the groups that performed the songs and sing the original versions of the songs. They also will share some period trivia, commercial jingles, and TV theme songs.

There’s something for everyone at festivals all around the lake. What better way to spend a summer weekend than at a fair with family and friends? Here are some fairs to check out this summer, whether by car or by boat!

Center Harbor will hold its annual Flea Market and Craft Fair on Sat., July 11, from 8 am until 2 pm.

This popular event will be held on the grounds of the Center Harbor Congregational Church, UCC and is for the support of the church’s programs. Fairy houses are tiny homes made with found materials, like twigs, shells, leaves, bark, pine needles, and acorn caps that turn into foundations, roofs, walkways, and doors.

A big hit among fair-goers in the Lakes Region is the Annual Craft Fair at the Bay in Alton Bay. The event will be on July 11 and 12 from 10 am to 5 pm. Artists from all across New England will be offering their work, from arts and crafts to paintings and sculptures. Visitors can shop for jewelry, floral arrangements, photography, woodcrafts, scarves, soaps, stained glass, knits, hair accessories, furniture, pottery, candles, doll clothes, handbags, and more. Shoppers can also enjoy live music and specialty food booths.

Sample gourmet specialty foods including herbal dips and salsas. Admission and parking are free.

The Annual Huggins Hospital Street Fair will be held on Fri., August 7 and Sat., August 8 at Brewster Academy on Main Street in Wolfeboro. This is a very popular fair with bargain hunters. Thousands of items are donated to raise money for the hospital, including toys, sporting goods, household décor, furniture, clothing, books, and lots more. There will be plenty of

The whole family can enjoy rides and games at the amusement portion of the fair. The fair is open from 10 am until 10 pm, both days, with a live auction on Saturday, beginning at 11 am The 72nd Annual Belknap County 4-H Fair is on August 8 and 9 this year, at the Belknap County Fairgrounds off Route 106, on Mile Hill Road in Belmont. The fair will feature animal shows, oxen and tractor pulls, horses, live demonstrations, 4-H exhibits, live music, and plenty of delicious food. Don’t miss the Sunday Night Pie Auction.

It’s wholesome fun for the whole family! On Saturday, the fair will be open from 9 am to 7 pm and on Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission is $7 per person (kids under age 10 are free).

Part 2 of the On the Green Arts & Crafts Festival at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, will be held on August 14, 15, and 16. There will be over 80 vendors selling jewelry, home décor items, glass art, gourmet foods, wooden crafts, and more. The fair will be open on Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sunday from 10 am until 4 pm. Admission is free.

Blues Artist Benefit Concert Area musicians are getting together for a concert to benefit legendary folk and blues artist Paul Geremia. Proceeds from the event will help Geremia in his recovery from a recent illness.

The show, which will take place at the Old White Church in Tuftonboro on Fri., June 12 at 7 pm, will feature performances by Taylor Whiteside, Bennett and Perkins, Peter Heimlich and AJ Kinnaman. There is a suggested donation of $15.

Paul Geremia is one of the best living interpreters of classic blues, a fine original songwriter, and a masterful guitar, harmonica and stride piano player. He has been called “one of the finest blues artists” by Rolling Stone and a “national treasure” by author Elijah Wald.

Two of his Red House releases, Gamblin’ Woman Blues and Self Portrait in Blues, were nominated for W.C. Handy Awards. Kudos has never measured out in fame or fortune for Paul. He has traveled the backroads of the music industry, performing in coffee houses and nightclubs, sometimes hitting the road “in a car that needed oil as often as

it needed gas.” Last summer the miles caught up with Paul, as he suffered a stroke while on the road in Ohio.

The artists performing at the benefit are all long-time Geremia admirers and they have shared stages with him, hosted concerts for him, and even gotten a few tips on the finer points of country blues along the way.

Taylor Whiteside has been a favorite of NE audiences for many years. He developed a reputation as a solo artist and a songwriter before becoming a member of the popular Northeast Winds and the nationally known Brandywine Singers.

AJ Kinnaman is a relative newcomer to the Lakes Region folk scene. He started out playing Chicago Blues in the Boston area, appearing on stages with Ricky “King” Russell, Racky Thomas and Boston Baked Blues.

When he began to get interested in acoustic and old-time blues, he was able to get hands-on instruction from Geremia himself. Besides playing as a solo in area coffee houses, he has also backed up singers Natalie Hebden and the band Open Tunings on bottleneck and lap steel guitar.

Orchestra to Commemorate 150th Civil War Anniversary Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War (which ended on April 9, 1865) and in tribute to all military service personnel past and present, the New Hampshire Master Chorale and Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Dan Perkins, will perform The Last Letter Home on June 14 at the Plymouth Congregational Church in Plymouth at 4 pm.

H2Ooooh! Day comes to the Center on Sat., June 20 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Squam Lakes Natural Science Center holds a fun day that is all about water. Visitors will meet aquatic animals such as mink, turtles, beaver, and osprey at Up Close to Animals presentations.

Visitors will see the river otters get a special fishy treat and view the Aquatic Discovery Table and learn hands-on how watersheds work and find out just how much fresh water there is at a “Drop in the Bucket” demonstration. Squam Lakes Association will be on hand to talk about monitoring the water quality of Squam Lake. There will be children’s games and crafts throughout the day.

Visitors will also be able to share ideas about water in a Stream of Conscience public art installation project by Christine Destrempes of Art for Water.

Loon Luncheon The Loon Preservation Committee’s Annual Summer Luncheon and Auction will be held at Church Landing in Meredith from 11 am to 2 pm on Sun., June 28. Attendees will enjoy a buffet lunch, silent auction, and the chance to swap stories with fellow loon lovers.

Guest speaker for the event is Willem Lange, author and host of NHPTV’s Windows to the Wild. All proceeds benefit Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) programs.

LPC Executive Director Harry Vogel will give a brief overview of New Hampshire’s loon activity so far this season.

Tribute to New England Artist at Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery Philip Brown Parsons’ work reminds us of why we love the Lakes Region.

His retrospective exhibit, A Tribute to a New England Artist, will open the season at Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery in Center Sandwich. An opening reception will be held Sat., June 13 from 5 to 7 pm. His son, Philip B. Parsons, Jr., will reminisce about his father’s life in a talk beginning at 6 pm.

The paintings done by Parsons in watercolor and oil, in pencil and ink, pastels, illustrations, and in drawings and prints show a gifted hand, a gentle stroke, a curious mind and a love of nature.

Parsons and his family have had deep roots in the Lakes Region for many years. In his portfolio, the roads

and farmhouses are familiar. The birds, horses and dogs could be our own.

Parsons’ hands were rarely idle as they drew and sketched on anything available. He was a master of pencil, ink and watercolor, often working on a paper bag or small bit of cardboard.

Parsons was not one to draw every brick but there is texture, depth and detail in all his work.

Parsons lived in Lexington, MA from 1934 until his death in 1977.

During this time, his work included book illustrations for Houghton Mifflin, Little Brown and other Boston publishers. His illustrations also appeared on many covers for such magazines as Hunting and Fishing, National Sportsman, Outdoors and

Youth’s Companion. One painting, The Country Store, was used on the LL Bean catalog several different years, as it was a favorite of Mr. Bean. During this time, Parsons was active with the Lexington Arts and Crafts Association and the Boston Watercolor Society.

He did a series of work on historic Lexington. He also found time to teach art in both Lexington and Boston schools.

Philip Brown Parsons leaves an appealing legacy of his beloved nature and wildlife that underscores our appreciation for the remarkable part of the world in which we live.

Lake Discovery Camp for Kids Plan ahead now for fun activities for your kids this summer. In July, the New Hampshire Boat Museum will be offering a fun-filled week of camp for children. The hands-on, active adventure will help children discover how the lakes, rivers, and streams of Wolfeboro connect our past with our future. Educator Jaime Laurent and museum staff and volunteers will lead this year’s camp.

Campers will participate in crafts, games, and experiments designed to instill an appreciation for our abundant freshwater resources. Students will participate in arts and crafts and can run off their energy with boatingthemed relay games like Captain Says, Town Docks and Water Safety. Science enthusiasts will enjoy discovering plants and animals living in the lakes and wetlands.

Highlights include one special offsite visit for each session. Younger students will ride Molly the Trolley and visit Back Bay with the Back Bay Skippers to learn how to sail model sailboats.

Older students will ride Molly the Trolley to the Wolfeboro Town Docks where they will ride on the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s Millie B. This will be followed by a tour with the captain of the docked Winni Belle and lunch onboard.

The cost to attend is $15 per day for members’ children or grandchildren and $18 per day for not-yet-members’ children and grandchildren. To help keep activities age-specific, the camp is divided as follows: Session 1: Children entering lower elementary grades K-2, July 20-21 from 9 am to 11:30 am with Tues., July 22 a longer field trip day.

elementary grades 3-6, July 22-24 from 9 am to noon with Fri., July 24 being a longer field trip day.

Museums on NH Heritage Trail Open for Season With summer nearly upon us, 15 museums from Portsmouth to Plymouth and several from northern areas of NH invite visitors to hit the Experience New Hampshire Heritage: The Portsmouth to Plymouth Museum Trail.

From WWII memorabilia and science and art artifacts to farmhouse tours and exhibits on Revolutionary history, the Trail features museums that cover nearly 300 years of history.

An example of a new exhibit on the Trail is A Pilgrimage to Simplicity: Lake Wentworth’s History and Traditions at the New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro.

The Wright Museum of World War II, located in Wolfeboro, is presenting an exhibit of over 20 authentic WWII quilts created during the time period 1940 – 1945; the exhibit turns through June 24.

According to Michael Culver, executive director of the Wright Museum of World War II, the Trail represents a concerted effort by participating museums to provide the best experience for tourists and NH residents alike. “New Hampshire boasts a rich history,” he says. “By working together, we can

share resources and better encourage people to literally hit ‘The Trail’ during these warmer months.”

Charles Clark, executive director of Castle in the Clouds in Moultonboro, says he is excited about the Castle’s most recent restoration project, which involved the complete rehabilitation of the South Tower of Lucknow. “I think guests will be very impressed by the intricate details exposed during the restoration of the dining room ceiling in particular,” he adds.
