Celebrating Mother’s Day in the Lakes Region

By Sarah Wright Charlotte Gray once wrote, “Children and mothers never truly part—Bound in the beating of each other’s heart.”

The love, nurturing, and patience of a mother for her child are hard to match.

Mother’s Day is a chance for us to show “Mom” our appreciation.

Many of us also choose to celebrate other women who have held a similar role in our lives, like grandmothers, stepmothers, and aunts. As we grow older, our relationships with our mothers may ebb and flow, but that special bond always remains.

Mother’s Day began because of a daughter’s love for her mother. Anna Jarvis established the first Mother’s Day on May 9, 1905, following her mother’s passing. A small service was held in West Virginia, at the local church where her mother had taught Sunday school.

Soon after, Jarvis campaigned to make Mother’s Day a national holiday, and later an International holiday. In 1910, West Virginia made it official, and other states followed quickly.

Anna Jarvis also started the custom of wearing a carnation on Mother’s Day, as it was her mother’s favorite flower.

Many people show their love and appreciation for their mothers with flowers or a thoughtful card, but there are lots of other ways to show her you care. This year, the Lakes Region offers a number of memorable ways to spend time with Mom. Many local restaurants offer lovely

smoked turkey as well as pasta with shrimp or chicken, and an omelet station. To make your reservation, call 367-4030.

M/S Mount Washington All Spruced Up and Ready to Set Sail

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper The yearly ritual of spring-cleaning is a must for many people. Sweeping the clutter and cobwebs from the house and sometimes giving walls a fresh coat of paint readies everything for the upcoming summer season.

Sprucing up and refurbishing has been going on at the M/S Mount Washington this spring. The Mount is the icon of Lake Winnipesaukee and has been for many, many years.

“This is our 143rd year,” says the Mount’s general manager, Jim Morash.

In preparation for another busy summer season, a lot of updates have been taking place at the big vessel’s winter dock in Center Harbor. These tasks are necessary from time to time

to ensure that the Mount and its smaller sister vessels, the Doris E and Sophie C, are all in top-notch running order and shiny and bright as spring moves into the summer season.

At the beginning of March, although the ground was still covered in snow and the weather chilly, M/S Mount Washington staff members met at the Center Harbor location and began some intensive work on the Mount and Sophie C. Some of the work centered on refurbishing the main deck of the Mount, but work has also been done on replacing a generator, certainly not an easy task due to the size of the generator and its final destination deep within the Mount.

On the main deck of the Mount, the crew and a finish carpenter have

been busy taking out benches in order to make way for better seating and tables for dining during weddings and events. It will allow for greater seating flexibility and repositioning of tables depending upon the size of each event.

“The benches were put in during the

1970s; they’ve been there for quite a while and it was time to modernize the area and remove the benches,” says Jim. “We do these small changes each

Page 6 • Mount Continued from page 5 year; a few years ago we refurbished the Flagship Lounge. When we do these projects, we are looking at the best way to update but also to preserve to the Mount so it will be in good shape into the future.”

Working with a finish carpenter, the crew added attractive bead board paneling on the walls where the benches had been. The raised stage area has a refurbished look as well.

Installing the new generator on the Mount was a big project but one the crew is well able to tackle. “We replaced one of our two generators about 12 years ago,” Jim says, “and the other one was installed in the 1980s.

We replaced the 1980s generator this year.”

The generators are huge machines that run on diesel and must be kept in top-notch condition because they truly provide power to run the vessel every

May 4, 2015 day from May until the last fall cruise.

Like a conscientious automobile owner, those that are responsible for the Mount make sure the generators and all mechanical equipment on the vessel are running smoothly before the season gets underway.

New solar lights on the exterior of the ship will replace the older can lighting; when the Mount is out on a nighttime cruise the new lights will offer pretty illumination on the ship’s sides. And, the new lights are solar and will not require power from the generators.

“We go through all systems and check for any wear and tear,” Jim explains.

Winter and early spring are quiet times to check, repair and refurbish the vessels.

maintenance,” Jim explains.

Three years ago the crew turned their attention to working on the Doris E’s engine and décor; this year it is the Sophie C’s turn for some repairs.

Sophie is a charming smaller vessel that serves as a floating post office, delivering the mail to Winnipesaukee island residents. The public can ride the Sophie C and enjoy the never-to-beforgotten experience of being onboard as Sophie makes her island deliveries.

This spring, Sophie’s engine was overhauled and it was an intensive job undertaken by crewmembers. “We have 20 years on the engine, which is typical,” Jim says. “The engine saw a lot of wear and tear over the last few years so at the end of last season we decided to go over it and replace any parts as needed.”

The engine had 15,000 hours on it, which is not unusual but, as with all the vessels, the crew keeps an eye on maintaining the engine. Rich Orzechowski, Andrew Shortt and Kevin Pettingill did all the engine work.

While all this spring-cleaning and work is taking place at the Mount’s Center Harbor location, work is also going on all winter and spring at the Weirs Beach office.

“Our office is open year round.” Jim explains. “In the winter months we are working on sales and marketing and planning our schedule of cruises.”

A new brochure with the cruise schedule for the upcoming season gets printed and the website is updated with current information, “We try to get that done by the first of the year,” Jim adds.

Online ticket sales during the winter months are important and Jim says this has grown a lot over the years and is now a large part of the sales effort.

This year the Mount kicks off the season with a prom for an area high school and then offers its very popular Mother’s Day cruise with brunch on Sun., May 10 with departures at 10 am and 2 pm from Weirs Beach.

A Sunday Champagne Brunch is offered weekly with departures from Weirs Beach and Alton Bay. Fridays are Family Fun Day with activities for the family; departures are from Weirs Beach and Wolfeboro. Monday evenings offer a Senior discount for those age 60 and over; call the Mount’s office for details.

Evening dinner dance cruises also are very popular. This season offers a variety of evening cruises such as Salute to Service; Rock ‘n Roll Saturday Night; Country Rock; Swing to the Oldies; Summer Lobsterfest; Fireworks Party Cruise; Elvis Tribute; Beach Boys Tribute; Parrot Head Party and many more themed cruise nights.

Old-Time Libraries

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper There is something fascinating about many of the libraries around the Lakes Region. Some are located in former homes large and small. Some are in brand new, modern buildings. And some were built years ago specifically for the purpose of housing a towns’ collection of books for public use.

I realized a long time ago that I am a library junkie. Whenever I find myself in a small town no matter what area of the state, I just have to stop at the library if it happens to be open, simply to look around.

Yes, the books are what these libraries are all about, but it is the architecture of the buildings that also pull me in. On a recent springtime trek in the Center Harbor/Sandwich area, I was fortunate to find two little libraries open on the day I visited. Both are gems and well worth a stop if you like historically beautiful buildings with some unusual and wonderful architectural touches.

It was a cloudy, windy Wednesday in April when I visited Center Harbor. I sat in the town’s bandstand while I ate my on-the-go sandwich for lunch. It is a great spot to relax and gaze at the lake in all its glory, but I glanced the other direction as well and noticed the charming little town library.

“I wonder if it is open today,” I thought to myself. I am quite used to traveling through a town and finding the library closed upon certain days. Small towns have to watch their budgets and funding does not always allow a library to be open every weekday and on Saturdays.

But on this day, I was in luck. The sign at the edge of the library’s lawn offered the hours and days of operation; I found the library is open daily, which is indeed surprising for a small town.

The building’s exterior is very

attractive and you can tell at a glance it is an older, well-kept building. The James E. Nichols Memorial Library is located next to the town’s fire station and across the street from the town bandstand; you really can’t miss it. The building is one of the structures in the historic district of the town (there are 13 buildings on the list).

The exterior of the library is made of stone (granite foundation, brick walls and limestone) and the building with large columns by the front entrance doors. All is well preserved on the

exterior and I couldn’t wait to get inside to see for myself if the interior was a beautiful and reflective of the early 1900s period. (It is interesting to note that the library’s architect, Charles Brigham of Boston, also designed the Laconia (NH) Public Library.)

The front door is narrow and made of a pretty wood, clearly original to the building. I gasped when I stepped into the library. I admit I was not prepared for how truly ornate and beautiful the space is.

Straight ahead, in the large main room is the librarian’s desk area where two friendly librarians were at work.

Above the desk is an amazing sight – a very tall, domed ceiling (known as a high barrel vault) that seems to soar above the room. Circular lights on the ceiling illuminate the space.

The first thing I noticed was a lot of period woodwork and mounted animals heads here and there on the walls (I learned these were from the collection of Mr. Nichols, who was a game hunter as well as a successful businessman).

Although these mounted heads might seem out of place and more fitting for a hunting lodge than a library, they somehow seem right at home among

And speaking of fireplaces, there are two in the library. A fireplace is located in each of the two sides of the main library room. In a clever use of space, the librarians have fashioned one side as a children’s area and the other as a space for new books and a large, original wooden table for patrons to sit and read or work on a project.

Librarian Jon Kinnaman took time out of his work (I observed he seems to always be busy greeting and aiding library patrons) to show me around.

We started in the new book area where I asked about the charming nursery rhyme tiles above the fireplace opening.

Made by the American Encaustic Company, the tiles are Mother Goose story scenes and are quite a wonderful addition to what might otherwise have seemed like just another nice fireplace in an old building. I am not sure why the tiles were added but I believe they are original to the fireplace and

a good example of the unexpected treats that make small town libraries so architecturally interesting and special.

Period lighting brightens the room and I was reminded of mansions and old homes I have seen from the late 1800s/ early 1900s with original, ornate lights.

The lighting in the library offers white globes hanging from heavy chains and wall sconces as well. (Jon told me the library was one of the first places in town to get electrical lighting.)

Jon took time to show me some items from the library’s special collection of original books. He also showed me a small meeting room where historical books are kept. I was amazed at a most unusual feature in the meeting room: a large, built-in wall safe.

The Mosler safe is huge with a heavy black metal door. Jon laughed at my amazed look and explained that when the library was opened in the early 1900s, Center Harbor did not have a

bank in the village. Thus, the safe was added to the library as a place where citizens could rent a safe deposit box to store valuables. Today, it is used for storage of library materials, but it is admittedly most unusual to see a bank vault in a library!

“This is a Neo Classical building.

The architect, Charles Brigham, was hired by Mr. Nichols to design the library,” explained Jon. Nichols grew up in Center Harbor but later moved away and rose to importance as a successful businessman in another state. He retained his ties to his hometown and when the citizens of Center Harbor wanted to build a library, they approached Nichols to ask for funding.

The former Center Harbor resident was more than happy to help and donated the funds for the building of the library, which was completed in 1910. The Center Harbor Library Association already had a collection of books but welcomed the library as a permanent home. Nichols wanted the library to be “free and open to all” and indeed it always has been.

A trust fund was set up by Nichols to keep the library in good shape.

Today, about 15,000 books are in the collection as well as many DVDs and audios. There also are public access computers and a digital catalog.

It is interesting to note that the library has always been the same size; no additions detract from the beauty of the original architectural design. Jon has made great use of the space and embraces the charm and modest size of the library. All are welcome and he and his library assistant are always on hand to help find a book, answer questions or sometimes just to chat. They seem to know everyone in town and welcome anyone and everyone to stop by and make use of the library.

Other features of the library are a wonderful Seth Thomas pendulum clock from the 1870s and tall, narrow original windows (great views of the harbor area and the lake are available from some windows).

After leaving the Center Harbor area, I took “the back way” to Sandwich just for the fun of a country ride over Bean Road (take a left onto Bean Road near Keepsake Quilting in Center Harbor).

The road is a winding, twisting way to reach Sandwich but a very pretty drive no matter what time of year.

I had been told the Sandwich library it is a must-see if looking for beautiful historic structures.

Located at 35 Main Street, the Samuel H. Wentworth Library sits on a rise and commands a nice view of the village area. It is near the Sandwich Fairgrounds; each year, while attending the fair, I saw the library building and always wanted to see what this structure looked like inside.

The building is indeed an amazing little library. The exterior is made of stone and resembles a building one might find in a wooded European setting. Heavy curved front double doors welcome all, but I found on this particular day that visitors had to enter on the library’s lower level.

I soon found out why: construction and renovations are underway in the main library area and everything has been moved temporarily to the newer back area of the library.

It was disappointing to not be able to visit the main library area because if it is anything like the exterior, I am sure it is historic and beautiful. However, the library director, Glynis Miner, took time to chat with me and share what is in the works for the library.

“We are doing renovation – not new construction,” she told me. “The work started April 1st and we will be reopening the beginning of June.”

In August, at the start of Sandwich Old Home Week, the library will have a festive picnic event with one of the library trustees arriving in the historic Sandwich Coach. The trustee will be dressed as Mr. Wentworth, the library’s founder. Picnickers will be urged to dress in period clothing as well.

The renovations, when complete, will bring back the architectural features of the original main library area. Drop ceilings, installed in the 1970s, are being removed which will increase light from original windows.

When completed, the unique features of the library will all shine once again.

Scarlet Pimpernel at the Wright Museum The Wright Museum will host the second session of the “Ron Goodgame and Donna Canney 2015 Educational Programming” on Tues., May 12 at 7 pm. Doors open at 6 pm.

The program features The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican: The Wartime Exploits of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty – Presented by Dan Schroeder. During the French Revolution, the Scarlet Pimpernel was an unassuming nobleman by day and a colorful action figure by night, rescuing people sentenced to death by the guillotine.

The Vatican had its own Scarlet Pimpernel during World War II in the person of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, an Irish Catholic priest who worked at the Vatican. From 1943-1944, he also was one of the most wanted men in Rome.

Monsignor O’Flaherty used his status as a priest and the safety of

the Vatican to rescue some 4,000 allied P.O.W.s and an untold number of Jews and other refugees from the Nazis. Join Wright Museum volunteer Dan Schroeder as he tells the WWII story of Monsignor O’Flaherty.

Dan Schroeder has been a volunteer at the Wright Museum since 2008. He has been instrumental in the success of the Museum’s “Traveling Trunk” program. Dan’s interest in WWII resulted from his family’s history of military service extending back to WWI. He also has a son who is currently in the military.

Admission is $8 per person and free for Wright Museum members.

Featured Artist Brings Vibrant Work to Art Place The featured artist at the Art Place in Wolfeboro will offer the vibrant work of Valerie Schurer Christle through May 13.

Originally from England, Christle immigrated to the states and settled in the Lakes Region in 1980. Her varied and multimedia work embodies her intensely focused interest in color, patterns, textures, layers, transparencies and reflections.

Christle is a self-taught artist with a distinctive perspective. The viewer is sure to discover abstractions within her realism or realism within her abstractions. Many times one can locate a fairy friend, creature or story literally written into her skies or landscape.

This layered quality is intentional; she enjoys hearing from her audience what they discover in the work, as well as sharing her own experience.

In Christle’s own words, “It was fascinating to be on hand at the gallery to discuss people’s reactions to different pieces, to see what attracted them to certain works. People were surprised at the diversity of media used and the variety of subject matter. This diversity is my artistic fuel. No sooner do I start piece than the next one is moving forward in my head, waiting for its moment of creation in whatever medium feels right, be it paint, fabric, glass, photography, or mixed media, or maybe in each one of these different media as I love to have a theme running through my works. They definitely reside in my head until completed, so it feels good when a piece is finished and some space vacated.”

Lidded Basket Class at Meredith Fine Craft Gallery The League of NH Craftsmen – Meredith Fine Craft Gallery is offering a double Saturday Lidded Basket Class on May 9 and 16 from 9 am-5 pm with Ray Lagasse.

In this workshop, students can choose one of four lidded basket sthey would like to make from start to finish. On the first Saturday, students will be making the basket and on the second Saturday, the lids will be attached.

Basket options are a double pie basket, knitting basket, picnic basket and a fishing creel basket.

early on that she had a keen eye and a special way with people, so I asked her to help us out at The Art Place. A beautiful friendship and symbiotic relationship soon developed. Doing art work while bringing up children and working with us at The Art Place seemed to suit her well. In time, she continued to develop her skills and a sense of style. As her growth as an artist flourished, she began to exhibit work as a multimedia artist, as well as a photographer. Whether she is doing a collage piece, a watercolor painting with words across the horizon, or an oil painting with palette knife, she offers an opportunity for the viewer to

explore a unique point of view and a glance into the heart of an artist.

It is my pleasure to have Valerie Christle as our featured artist through May 13. She increasingly surprises me with her new work, exploration of ideas, and continued growth Most recently Christle’s images have appeared on the cover of the GWAC current issue and the program cover for the Friends of Music 2015.

New at the Science Center Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is now open for its 49th annual trail season. Regular trail hours are 9:30 am to 4:30 pm (last trail admission at 3:30 pm). Since 1966, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has educated and enlightened visitors about the natural world through live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, and lake cruises. The Science Center is the only institution in northern New England accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) The Science Center has new exhibits, new animals, and a new look for the boats for the 2015 season. Beginning in May, the Science Center will feature a three-dimensional art installation in the Mead Discovery Place of the Trailhead Gallery called Stream of Conscience.

To build excitement and awareness about water and the upcoming new Water Matters Pavilion (scheduled to open for 2016), the Science Center is working with the non-profit organization Art for Water (artforwater. org) to create this installation. It is on display through November 1, 2016.

Through visits to schools and with Science Center attendees, Art for Water associates will talk with groups about global and local water issues. Participants will be invited to help create the Stream of Conscience display. During the workshops, Art for Water staff members will give a slide presentation about global and local

water issues, followed by questions and answers, ending with solicitation of written contributions with participants’ thoughts and reflections about water.

The resulting written-upon paper pieces will be formed into a river of thoughts that represents the interconnectedness of all life. Art for Water will be offering a seminar during H2Ooooh! Day at the Science Center on Sat., June 20 with a day all about water. By bringing people together in the making of public art, this project will foster stewardship of water as a precious natural resource Another new exhibit opening in 2015 is the Gordon Interactive Playscape; A Predator-Prey Adventure. Visitors play the role of a red squirrel searching for food as they climb rocks and logs, scramble through tunnels, and balance on branches to escape predators in search of the bird’s nest. The Playscape is located next to the Gordon Children’s Center and will open July 1.

The Celebrate Birds Exhibit will feature a new, feathered friend - a Raven. The Raven replaces the Blue Jays, which were part of a three-year research study completed by Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in conjunction with the University of New Hampshire. The Raven arrived at the Science Center in March as a former pet whose owners could no longer care for him. He is habituated to people and cannot be released into the wild.

The Osprey, one of the Science Center’s pontoon boats, got a pre-season facelift of a new floor and side curtains. This will add to visitor’s comfort on cruises. The Bald Eagle Adventure Cruise, Loon Cruise, Dinner and Sunset Cruise, Explore Squam Cruise, and Nature of the Lakes Cruise will all be back for the 2015 season. The Lake Explorers Family Cruise also returns to get young people interested in life on the water. Squam Lake Cruises begin May 16.

The live animal exhibit trail features native New Hampshire animals such as coyote, red fox, gray fox, skunk, bobcats, mountain lions, white-tailed deer, river otters, black bears, and various raptors including bald eagle, great-horned owl, and red-tailed hawk.

The Science Center features River Otter Feeding presentations every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11:30 am.

River Otter Feeding allows visitors to learn about otter biology and ecology while watching the two resident river otters play and enjoy a special treat.

Visitors can also see live mountain lion training on Thursdays at noon during July and August. Mountain Lion Training and Feeding shows off the tasks the mountain lions have learned that enable keepers to ensure the health and safety of the animals while providing enrichment. Up Close to Animals presentations offered five times a day in July and August allow visitors to meet an animal up close and learn about them from a naturalist educator.

Access to three other hiking trails is

included in trail admission, including the Forest Trail, a 2/3-mile loop exploring forest ecology. The Ecotone Trail is a 1/3-mile walk along the edge of field and forest and the Mount Fayal Trail is a 1-mile loop offering views of Squam Lake.

41st Annual Great Smith River Canoe and Kayak Race The Wolfeboro Lions Club is celebrating its 41st annual running of The Great Smith River Canoe and Kayak Race on Saturday, May 16.

The race will be held rain or shine starting at 1:15 pm and has been organized into 19 classes to accommodate paddlers of all abilities—novice to expert. Prizes will be awarded to the first three finishers in each class.

The race events include one- and two-person categories for canoes and kayaks and are further divided by gender and age.

Starting at the Alan Albee Town Beach on Lake Wentworth, the course passes through the Smith River to Crescent Lake and continues down the Smith River to the finish line in downtown Wolfeboro at the town docks on Lake Winnipesaukee.

The four-mile race course includes about one quarter mile of class 2 white water and two short portages.

It takes between 30 and 60 minutes to complete the course, depending on ability. Racers can arrange to have an entry form sent to them by calling 569-5454 or they can register the day

of the race from 10 am to 12:45 pm.

Registration forms are also available at the Wolfeboro Chamber of Commerce.

The registration fee is $20.00 per paddler.

This is a great family event, which has become an annual rite of spring in Wolfeboro. A large number of racers is expected with the first 50 entrants receiving a free race T-shirt. Adding to the excitement will be the hundreds of spectators who annually line the racecourse from start to finish.

Coinciding with the race will be the traditional raffle, also sponsored by the Wolfeboro Lions Club. The grand prize this year is $1,000 in cash.

Raffle tickets are priced at $3.00, two for $5.00, or five for $10.00. The drawing will take place immediately following the conclusion of the race.

Raffle tickets can be ordered with the registration form or purchased from Wolfeboro Lions Club members.

Pemi Choral Spring Concert Series Hope for the future, the longing for freedom, and the joyous connection with folk music and dance are among the many moods evoked in the Pemigewasset Choral Society’s spring concerts.

Under Director Leslie McDonnell and Assistant Director Will Gunn, with Grace Templeton accompanying, 80 singers from throughout the Lakes Region will present “American Tapestry” honoring the immigrant experience. Concerts will be performed at three locations in early May: Thursday, May 7 at 7:30 pm at the Gilford Community Church in Gilford; Friday, May 8 at 7:30 pm at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in Franklin and on Sunday, May 10 at 3 pm at the Silver Center for the Arts in Plymouth.

Commenting on what inspired the title, Leslie McDonnell remarks, “We are a nation of immigrants, and this concert explores why they came and what they found here. Several numbers

portray their homelands, including In Shadowed Night by Brahms. Aaron Copland’s The Promise of Living describes the rural experience in this new land, and Alexander’s Ragtime Band gives a spicy flavor of life in the cities. African-American Spirituals and American folksongs add another dimension, and the concert concludes with patriotic songs.”

The program will include personal immigration stories of the families of choral society members, and readings from relevant PBS broadcasts and from the book 97 Orchard Street by Linda Granfield.

All are welcome; admission is by donation at the Gilford and Franklin concerts; tickets for the Plymouth concert may be purchased at the Silver Hall Box Office or at the door.

Pianist Thomas Pandolfi One Singular Night Pianist Thomas Pandolfi will bring his acclaimed program “One Singular Night: Music of George Gershwin and Marvin Hamlisch” to Brewster Academy’s Anderson Hall in Wolfeboro on Sat., May 16 at 7:30 pm.
