One of the most breathtaking views in the Lakes Region is from the Lucknow Estate (Castle in the Clouds) in Moultonborough. It’s one of those “must-see” places for tourists and locals alike. Castle in the Clouds opened on May 9, and numerous summer events are scheduled. Even if you’ve been there before, why not experience the landmark in a new way? The Carriage House Restaurant serves up delicious lunches for visitors, and now you can step into the kitchen and take a cooking class with Castle Executive Chef Gretchen Shortway. The classes will take place on Thursdays, May 2 and May 28 at 10 am. On May 21, the class will feature Kale & Pasta, and on May 28, Cooking with Chicken. Learn how to make a new dish and take home a treat.

On Wed., May 27, at 6 pm, Barry H. Rodrigue will discuss his research on Thomas Plant and the Lucknow Estate.

He will be signing copies of his new book entitled, A Castle in the Clouds: Tom Plant and the American Dream.

The Cottage Colony Culture

The list goes on and on when naming the many cottage/lodging establishments that once dotted the Lakes Region. The cottages and motels and inns were beloved places where vacationing families rested and relaxed for a night or two, or sometimes for an entire week.

Many of the old cottage colonies are gone, victims of the changing times and needs of vacationers. But the oldtime places live on in postcards, flyers and memorabilia from the heyday of this special manner of vacationing.

No one is a greater fan (or collector) of anything and everything related to old lodging and vacationing in the Lakes Region than Fred Clausen. As the owner, along with his wife Maureen, of Proctor’s Lakehouse Cottages in Weirs Beach, Fred has been living and

breathing the hospitality business for years.

Each summer, families return to Proctor’s for the sort of vacation you do not see around as much these days: a week or more in a special cottage right by the lake with a sandy beach, boating and family fun. It is a wholesome way to relax and all about spending time with family and being welcomed back with the same warmth by the Clausen family year after year.

(Fred and Maureen’s son Patrick and his wife Gladys are now the general managers of Proctors but the whole family is on site and greet new and returning guests.)

Fred adds that back then there was no beach. The beach was added when the Army Corps of Engineers dredged the Weirs Channel and blew the sand along the shoreline. Over the next 20 years the number of cottages grew from three to 12 and in the 1950s, when motels were in vogue, the garage was remodeled and became an eight-unit motel. Fred and Maureen purchased the old Proctor’s Motel and Cottages in the late 1990s.

One way, according to Fred, to find out about the old cottage colonies, is to talk to former housekeepers and others who worked at the businesses. Perhaps because of their visibility as business owners, Fred and Maureen are more

It has given Fred a lot of insight into what vacationing and the old cottage colonies were like back then.

Among Fred’s large collection of

cottage colony and Lakes Region vacationing memorabilia are blackand-white and color postcards showing the old cottages and inns. He also has old ashtrays from the businesses and even matchbooks sporting the logos of

old area cottages and motels. He says eBay is a great place to find a vast array of items on the Web and it has even led him to more information about old lodging places he did not know of.

One example is a black-and-white postcard with wording that says Lake View Hill Top Camps, Meredith, NH. Fred is baffled about this particular lodging establishment and says he had never heard of it before and cannot find much about it.

The subject of the Lakes Region cottages is fresh in the minds of Fred and Maureen because they just hosted an annual get-together of area cottage owners/businesspeople. It is a fun way to network and just relax among fellow business owners.

The Terrace Hotel • Cottage Continued from page 7 Fred says the culture among cottage colony owners is different today than in former times. The old way saw business owners in competition with one another and not much sharing or networking. “The camaraderie is much better now,” he says. Business owners share information, such as if they have no room vacancies, they will call fellow lodging owners to help a traveler/vacationer find a room. It really benefits everyone and makes for a better business atmosphere.

Maureen has her own Lakes Region vacation stories to share and she knows a lot about the former cottages and businesses in the area. She recalls staying at the beautiful Terrace Hotel in Laconia when she was a child. Fred pulls out an old postcard of the business and it was a beautiful and large old inn overlooking the water. All that is left of the business today are stone pillars that once marked the entrance to the property. Maureen recalls having a great time while her family stayed at

the hotel; like many vacationers in the past, her family really enjoyed their stay in the Lakes Region.

Living with someone who collects as Fred does requires a patient spouse.

Luckily Maureen is good-natured and often interested in Fred’s collection of cottage memorabilia.

Other cottage owners have given Fred information about old businesses.

He has talked with the owners of the Estate Motel and Channel Cottages, among others.

With fun names such as Sweetwood Cottages, Quarter Deck Motel, Little Cape Codder Cabins, Chick-A-Gami Cottages and Look Off Rock Cabins, among many others, it is easy to see why Fred is so attracted to collecting old lodging memorabilia.

Beyond the thrill of collecting, there is a lot to be learned about the way people traveled and vacationed and the changes we have gone through as a country when looking at old postcards.

As Fred would say with a collector’s gleam in his eye, “You never know what you’ll turn up or what you might learn.”

Nick Golf Classic Sign-Up July may seem weeks away, but those who love a good competitive game of golf should sign up and mark their calendars now for the 8th Annual Nick Golf Classic. This year’s tournament will be held at the Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Club in New Durham on Mon., July 20. The tournament format will be ‘best ball, net and gross’ and will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 am.

The event is a fundraiser for the Wolfeboro Area Recreation Association (WARA), which is dedicated to preserving the character of the town and the values important to its residents. WARA’s mission is to provide recreational opportunities for both children and adults that enhance the quality of life and incorporate and support community values.

Participants in the Nick Golf Classic will support WARA’s continued effort to provide The Nick Recreation Park for all members of the community

to enjoy. In addition to supporting The Nick, the registration fee includes: 18-holes of golf on the Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Course, breakfast, a tournament gift, longest drive and closest to the pin awards, appetizers on the course, lunch in the clubhouse and a silent auction. There will also be a chipping competition, 50/50 raffle and skins game.

The Nick Golf Classic is WARA’s biggest fundraiser. The 2015 event sponsors are Pella Windows & Doors, Eastern Propane & Oil, Green Mountain Communications, The Shops at Durgin Stables and Wolfeboro Oil Inc. All of the proceeds from the tournament will go directly to The Nick and will help provide the necessary funds to operate and maintain the park.

his own troubles with substance abuse years ago after a successful college and semi-pro football career, and wanted to inspire others toward recovery and raise awareness regarding the negative social stigma associated with addiction. He’s done this by sharing his cautionary tale and road to redemption story at high schools.

The mission statement for Do Good N Be Good is “to provide opportunities for positive social interaction, social responsibility, and healthy granola bars!” They’d like to eventually be able to help people adopt, and also educate people about addiction, possibly help-

We all pack snacks for the road, and now there’s a new option that is tasty and naturally good. Made right in Loudon, New Hampshire, Do Good N Be Good, LLC, aims to donate 10 percent of its granola bar profits to charity.

There’s more good to these granola bars, too, including gluten-free, wheatfree, and organic ingredients. Some of the bars are also dairy-free. With delicious options like chocolate/almond/ walnut; chocolate/ cranberry/ cherry; apple/walnut; coconut/almond; and oatmeal/golden raisin, there’s something for everyone.

It all started in Heidi Hanson’s kitchen. A licensed massage therapist, Heidi first got the granola bar recipe from a friend. After tweaking the ingredients and adding different flavors, she made it her own. She wasn’t initially planning to sell them, until other parents at the soccer field started asking for more, telling Heidi that they’d gladly pay for them. Heidi’s husband, Pete, brought them to the cafeteria where he worked to try selling them, and they disappeared. Then people just started emailing their orders to Heidi. The idea of turning the snack into a business was born.

But they didn’t want to just sell granola bars—they also wanted to do some good. Heidi and Pete hoped to focus on the causes closest to their hearts. The first would be to raise awareness about adoption. After having their daughter Asia Grace, who is now 14 years old, Heidi and Pete wanted more children.

First they decided to become foster parents and get involved in the New Hampshire state foster system. Then they started looking into adoption.

Although they weren’t initially looking to adopt overseas, a woman at their church had a connection to the Home of Hope orphanage in Rwanda, Africa.

However, the high cost of adoption was discouraging.

Then someone suggested a fundraiser. Heidi and her husband helped organize a silent auction and had a magician friend volunteer for the event.

When they started looking for a child, they had ideas of what they wanted, but what happened next was a surprise. “In 2008, we decided to adopt not one, but two boys from Rwanda,” says Heidi.

“We thought it would benefit them to grow up with a sibling who was from the same circumstances.” They found out later that the two boys were originally from opposing tribes, so the idea that they were going to be raised as brothers became even more significant to them. Benaiah and Luke are now age 9. They joined a sister, Macie, 10, who was adopted through the foster system.

Heidi and Pete thought their family was complete, but they were about to grow by one more. Jacob was a boy they had fostered, whose mother battled addiction. When his mother got back on her feet and moved into a halfway house, he returned to her.

However, Heidi and Pete still babysat him from time to time and continued a close relationship with his mother.

Sadly, Jacob’s mother overdosed, and tragically passed away. Heidi and Pete scrambled to adopt the boy, and found out that they were named in his mother’s paperwork as his caretakers should anything ever happen to her. Jacob, now age 7, is thriving. Heidi says, “We thought we were done, but you never know what can happen.”

For now, they’re helping out locally whenever they see a need. Money has been donated to athletic programs, and the company has participated in homeless outreach. Do Good N Be Good’s “Team Do Good” teamed up with Rise Again Outreach, handing out food and granola bars to those in need in Pittsfield. Heidi likes bringing people together through her granola bars, and says, “You become a part of our team when you purchase a granola bar.”

Heidi and her husband are growing their business every day, but it’s still a small operation. Heidi first had to get

her kitchen licensed by the state, and is now working on converting a sitting room into a prep area. She’s able to make 60 bars at a time, mixing batches while she home schools her children.

“Right now, someone in Concord is helping me with nutrition labels.” A branding company from Massachusetts has already called her, and Do Good N Be Good is planning to go retail this summer. “Three stores are waiting for product,” says Heidi.

It’s a family business for sure, with Heidi and Pete’s children helping out with the packaging and delivery, and they’ll become more involved as they get older. Heidi says the flavor customers order the most is a tie between chocolate/cranberry/cherry and chocolate/almond/walnut.

The special exhibit, A Pilgrimage to Simplicity: Lake Wentworth’s Traditions and History, will explore the unique history of Wentworth, a lake located in Wolfeboro. The exhibit will include Native American artifacts, historic photos, summer camp and lodging memorabilia, archaeological items, and historic boats from Lake Wentworth.

“This season’s new exhibit on the history of Lake Wentworth has been a great partnership between the Boat Museum and the exhibit’s three sponsors, the Lake Wentworth Association, Lake Wentworth Foundation, and Point Breeze Condominium Association.

“Singing with semi-pro Tuckermans at 9 is serious fun...way more than most singers can handle,” jokes group founder and baritone Mark Miller.

“We’re not a ‘stand and sing’ group. We do shows, not concerts. We’re hip when we need to be, but always friendly and fun. While the music comes first, a very close second is engaging and involving our audiences.”

Different eras, different styles, and different soloists all combine for a versatile repertoire. “We spread the solos around; it keeps the diva quotient low,” says Miller. “Seriously, this is a huge part of our brand. Over and over, we hear how much our fans enjoy the variety.”

Tuckermanss at 9, called T9 for short, performs approximately eight to 12 shows a year. And there are never any dues to pay. In fact, although T9 exists

mostly for the sheer joy of a cappella, singers are actually paid whenever possible, after expenses.

Year-round, weekly rehearsals are usually held in Durham or Exeter, but the group’s line-up comes from a wide area: Dover, Nashua, Durham, New Durham, Brentwood, Exeter, and Hampton. “Rehearsals start at 7 pm and we work straight through till 9 pm.

Kick Up Your Heels at the Contra Dance The Community Contra Dance Series, hosted by Global Awareness Local Action (G.A.L.A.) will host its final dance of the season on Sat., May 23 at the Ossipee Town Hall Gymnasium at 55 Main St., Center Ossipee.

The dance runs from 7 to 10 pm, with the first half hour dedicated to a brief overview of the basic steps of New England contra dance. Dances are a fun and energizing night out for all ages and abilities, even if you simply prefer to cheer the dancers on from the sidelines.

The May 23 dance will feature The Fiddling Thomsons, led by father and son Ryan and Brennish Thomson. The award-winning duo has taught workshops and played for dances and fiddle competitions throughout the region.

Although they will be playing traditional New England contra tunes, the Thomsons have worked with a variety of musical styles and unusual instruments. Ryan is a respected contra enthusiast and music researcher and has even attended dances internationally.

Don Heinold will be calling the dance.

The name Contra Dance refers to partnered folk dance styles, where couples dance in two facing lines. Contra dance is a hybrid of an English countrydance and French court dances. At the end of the 17th century, French dancers began to incorporate English country-

dance with steps from their own court dances and in turn called these dances contra-dance, or contredanse. Many of the moves called out during the dance originate from the French terminology.

The contra dance was very popular throughout America from the 1700s well into the 1800s, but with the arrival of the square dance, waltz, swing, and other forms of dance its popularity was mostly confined to rural areas.

It is interesting to note that before the contra dance revival it was not known to be called a night of Contra Dancing.

Rather it had other names such as barn dance, kitchen junket, Old Timers Ball, and the dance. These dances were held in church halls, grange halls, town halls, barns, and even places like kitchens and living rooms. There was a time in New England when contra dances were so popular that one band might be booked six nights in a single week.

Dance admission fees help to pay the band and cover outreach material, and are as follows: $7 for adults, $5 for students and seniors, and $3 for children under 12.

Spend a Day Fishing on the Big Lake

By Thomas P. Caldwell A visit to Lake Winnipesaukee immediately brings to mind swimming, boating, and lying on the beach. But there is another lake activity that has provided wonderful memories for many vacationers and year-round residents: fishing.

Those who don’t own a boat and have never been fishing before still can have a great time by going on a guided fishing trip on the Big Lake. There are a half-dozen fishing guides around the lake who can provide a great day out on the water, ranging from Dr. Hook, having been offering fishing charters out of Laconia for years, to Wyatt’s Flys Charters and Salmon Patrol Charters in Gilford, to Fishing Lake Winnipesaukee in Wolfeboro.

Ron Paquette of Fishing Lake Winnipesaukee said he gets a lot of tourists, as well as people who are visiting someone in the area who is a fisherman, but who have never been fishing themselves. “They’ll call to set up a trip,” he said. “We also get kids who come up to visit Grandma and Grandpa.”

Whatever their reasons for wanting to go fishing, Ron, like other guides, wants to provide them with a fun and successful fishing adventure.

“It’s a lot of fun, unless you can’t catch anything,” said Ron, “so I do my best to make sure they do. There are days when the weather doesn’t

cooperate, it’s windy and cold, and you’re restricted where you can fish, so it can be a challenge.”

For someone like Ron, who has been “guiding five years, and fishing for 60,” he said, “If you’re out there a lot, and find out what’s working and where they are, you’ll have some pretty good success.”

Ron said his father took him out fishing as soon as he could hold a pole, and he has been fishing ever since.

He knows the different locations to go, depending upon the season. In the spring, the fish are at the mouths of the rivers where smelt are spawning, and along the shore, searching for bait in shallow waters. That is the time for salmon, lake trout, and rainbow trout.

As the water warms, more fish

become active and fishermen can catch smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, pickerel, perch, and a variety of sunfish.

During the summer months, the salmon and lake trout go deeper for cooler temperatures, and the fisherman needs to use downriggers to place the lure at the desired depth while trolling, with the fishing line varying in length, depending on the species being caught.

A long line is used for salmon to avoid having the trolling motor frighten the fish.

“I have all the equipment for different fishing: bait casting, fly poles, downriggers, and fish finders,” Ron said.

Of the various species to fish, Ron said, “There’s a lot more action with

smallmouth bass, with people casting, not trolling. Sometimes we’ll start out trolling with downriggers, and as the day progresses, we’ll switch over to bass fishing. They’re fun: They fight, they jump. It’s exciting.”

As fun as bass fishing is, Ron said some people keep them and some let them go; whereas with white perch, they’re “good eaters” and people keep more of them.

“I’ve fished with youngsters, and really enjoy teaching kids. But they want to catch something every minute, so it keeps me going.”

Like most fishing charters, Ron tries to limit the number on the trip to three adults, or two adults and two children.

“It’s an 18-foot boat,” he said, “and you don’t want everyone getting in each other’s way.”

Like many other lake businesses, Ron’s busiest time is the summer months, June through August. There is less call for the charters during the spring, and by September, the numbers begin to fall back again.

Then there is the weather. People want to fish on nice days, and sometimes they will want to cancel if it’s raining.

Ron said he will warn customers if inclement weather is predicted. If they still want to go, perhaps because it’s the only day they have available, he will keep them apprised of the weather

Otherwise, it means postponing the trip to another time.

Ron said a lot of his business came his way through Curt Golder, another Wolfeboro fishing guide who recently retired. “I met Curt a long time ago,” Ron said. “He was a guide and I was more of a salmon fisherman. One day, he asked me to go out with him. We struck up a friendship, and we’ve been friends ever since, and fishing buddies.”

Through Curt, Ron learned the tricks of going after other fish species, and when Curt retired, he sent his customers to Ron. “He helped me start in the business,” Ron said.

Squam Lakes Association to Host Spring Pancake Breakfast Get the weekend started on Sat., May 23 from 9 to 11 am with a piping hot stack of flapjacks at the annual Squam Lakes Association (SLA) Pancake Breakfast fundraiser at the SLA Resource Center in Holderness.

Bring the family and friends, and dig into this all-you-can-eat breakfast feast. The menu has been expanded to also include also bacon, fruit salad, oatmeal, coffee, juice, tea and a fixins’ bar.

When you buy tickets, along with a delicious breakfast, you’ll get the chance to scale the climbing wall in the barn, take a kayak or canoe out for a spin and go on a guided tour of the SLA’s new campus. Stop by to learn more about ongoing conservation efforts and interesting volunteer

opportunities.

All proceeds go toward the continued preservation of the Squam Lakes watershed. The SLA will put contributions to work by maintaining 52 miles of hiking trails, monitoring the watershed’s water quality, mitigating aggressive invasive species, and providing dynamic youth programming and meaningful community engagement.

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper If you enjoy hiking and want to experience a fun trek up Alton’s Mount Major, you might choose Memorial Day weekend for your adventure.

Should you hike Mount Major on Sun., May 24, you won’t be able to miss a unique fundraising event that combines the fun of hiking with the chance to help raise funds for a very worthy cause for children called Hike for a Home.

The event benefits the efforts of Love146, an international group working to end child sex trafficking. Hike for a Home was created a few years ago

by Lakes Region resident and Love146 volunteer Katrina AuCoin. She is dedicated to the cause of ending child sex trafficking around the world.

In particular, the funds raised from the May 24 hike will benefit the Round Home in the Philippines, a haven for children rescued from sex trafficking.

“I got involved in around 2010 when I heard about Love146 at a conference.

I was living and working at a non-profit in California at the time. Actually my parents heard about the group first and told me about it. It is a cause I immediately took to heart,” Katrina says.

After moving to New Hampshire, Katrina had an idea of raising money for Love146 by combining fundraising with doing a workout. She thought that people could use their springtime exercise workout as a basis for fundraising for Love146.

“I wanted it to be not just for people doing a personal workout, but for anyone in the community to get involved,” she adds.

She is aware that Mount Major on Rt. 11 in the Alton Bay area is a very busy hiking spot on Memorial Day weekend. She saw it as the perfect place to get the word out about ending child sex trafficking and to raise funds by letting hikers make a donation before hiking the mountain. (The suggested donation is $25 per family).

This is the third year of the fundraiser and it has become very popular with many hikers. Those who want to donate or learn more can stop by Katrina’s information table/tent, which will be set up on May 24 at the Mt. Major parking lot.

“This year we want the event to be even bigger,” she explains. “Last year we raised $1,500 through a mix of people who formed their own teams and hikers who heard about it and just showed up and wanted to donate.”

In an effort to make the event even more fun, Katrina has included prizes this year which will be given out in four categories: 1. the largest donation; 2. the funkiest outfit; 3. the fastest time to the summit and back; 4. the person who goes to the summit and back the most times in one day.
