Huge Wolfeboro Rally Set Stage for Slavery’s Abolition But WHY Wolfeboro?

Here’s a mystery to ponder…

Fact: One hundred sixty-four years ago, on August 25, 1853, John Greenleaf Whittier reported a brief doubling of the population of Wolfeboro, “The Free Soil Convention, which met here yesterday, was a most spirited and successful demonstration. Early in the morning, the steamboats came in, heavily laden with passengers—a fine representation of the strength and beauty of the Free Democracy of New Hampshire…Hon. Amos Tuck, of Exeter, was president of the day, introduced Moses A. Cartland…who called out the enthusiastic cheers…by his eloquent and indignant denunciation of the Fugitive Slave Law. He was followed

by Ex-Senator Hale, who, on rising, was greeted with cheer after cheer….”

Fact: Whittier and other reporters set the size of the crowd at between 2,000 and 3,000 people, a significant gathering in a town with a full-time population of 2,000 and without easy access by railroad or modern road.

Fact: A follow-up gathering just seven weeks later was held in Exeter, NH. There, it is said, 15 political leaders set the stage for the formation of the Republican Party, a party uniting all anti-slavery factions. It was the party that took Abraham Lincoln to the White House in 1860, which led to the complete abolition of slavery.

at the Wolfeborough-Tuftonborough Academy (precursor to today’s Brewster Academy). A man of small beginnings, he earned the friendship of leaders in the community by his intellect, character and diligence. One in particular, Samuel Avery, so shaped his life that in his History of Wolfeboro, Parker quotes Wilson saying, “All that I am, I owe to Mr. Avery. His encouragement sustained me when I knew not which way to turn.” This is high praise that may have easily led to hubris in a less humble man than Samuel Avery, for when Wilson stated it, he was vice president of the United States under

Ulysses S. Grant. Perhaps more importantly to the course of our nation’s moral compass, however, is the fact that Henry Wilson was a leader in abolition efforts, being an early spokesman for anti-slavery legislation and a founder of the Free Soil movement.

He chaired the 1852 national Free Soil Convention, where New Hampshire’s John P. Hale was chosen the party’s presidential candidate. Later, as an advisor to Lincoln, Wilson is said to have been the one who pressed the president to issue the Emancipation • Wolfeboro Continued on page 4

So how did Wolfeboro become the site of a huge gathering that changed the course of our nation’s history?

Was it at the suggestion of John Greenleaf Whittier, known more as an abolitionist and editor than a poet at the time of the Convention? Although he was from Massachusetts, he loved New Hampshire, especially its seacoast, mountains and the Lakes Region. His imprint is seen in how frequently his name is associated with landmarks in the area: Whittier Bridge, the Whittier Highway, and the slim statue on the lawn of the Melvin Village Church, for instance. He spent time at Ossipee Park, B.F. Shaw’s resort that preceded Thomas Plant’s Lucknow, now Castle in the Clouds, and enjoyed most of July 1890 at the Elmwood Inn in Wakefield… but that was long after the Convention of 1853. Perhaps Whittier introduced Wolfeboro as a location to his friend and fellow editor, Henry Wilson, who served in the Massachusetts legislature almost continuously from 1840 to 1852, and who had joined with him to go to Washington, D.C. in 1845 to file Massachusetts’ protest against the annexation of Texas as a slave state. Did they lobby together for the Convention’s location?

It might have been an easy sell.

• Wolfeboro Continued from page 3 Proclamation. Perhaps Henry Wilson approached his old friend Samuel Avery about holding the Convention in Wolfeboro?

Samuel Avery, ancestor to the Averys of present-day Avery Insurance, was a successful merchant and small-scale industrialist in the town. His name appears on numerous rolls of projects that improved life for the region’s citizens, most notably the WolfeboroughTuftonborough Academy of which he was the prime stakeholder. He was also one of the board members who formed the Wolfeborough Bank in 1834. Interestingly, one of several Dover businessmen who joined Avery on the board was John P. Hale. Yes, it was the same John P. Hale nominated for U.S. President at the 1852 Free Soil Convention chaired by Henry Wilson, and the “Ex-Senator John P. Hale” mentioned by John Greenleaf Whittier in his article of August 25th.

It was the largest hotel ever built in the town and was fully ready to serve the thousands attending the August 1853 Free Soil Convention.

1853 in Wolfeboro? Or was it the other way around? Who can know, but perhaps we should remember that activists have to eat, too.

Many of the organizers of the August 24th Convention came from the seacoast of New Hampshire, notably Exeter and Dover. The Boston and Maine Railroad

had just completed its tracks from the seacoast to Alton in 1851, and the Lady of the Lake steamship transferred train passengers from the Alton Bay station to ports around the lake. Perhaps organizers thought of Wolfeboro as a location for the Free Soilers to meet because they knew how convenient travel to this beautiful place could be, and thousands of happy attendees could give a good boost to marketing efforts.

At least one businessman in Wolfeboro may have been banking on

just that scenario. Daniel Pickering, long-time owner of the Pickering House (now being brought back to life as an inn on Main Street by Peter and Patty Cooke of Wentworth Style), was a hugely successful merchant and manufacturer. He was co-grantor of land for the Wolfeborough-Tuftonborough Academy, was on the board of directors of the 1834 Wolfeborough Bank, held substantial stock in the Lady of the Lake steamer, and in 1850, he had built The Pavilion, the largest hotel Wolfeboro would ever see. It is easy to imagine how enchanted he would have been at the prospect of thousands of visitors coming to Wolfeboro, and especially if they were coming for a cause he appreciated. According to Parker, Pickering was an “Old Line Whig,” a branch of the party committed to abolition.

Ashland School Cafeteria. This free public program will address the extensive program of constructing and improving highways in the state since World War II. Hundreds of millions of dollars were spent on this effort in the second half of the 20th century. The decisions to build or improve certain highways, or to not undertake other proposed road projects, were often controversial and subject to political considerations and federal policies.

The program will look at the economic, social and cultural changes that followed the decisions to build or not to build highways. The program is largely funded by New Hampshire Humanities and is sponsored by the Ashland Historical Society, which will serve refreshments. The Ashland School Cafeteria is located in the wing of the Ashland School at 16 Education Drive, off School Street, in Ashland village.

Get Lost in a Corn Maze!

By Sarah Wright Fall is finally here! With cool breezes, crisp apples, bright pumpkins, and crunchy leaves, there’s a lot to love about the season. There are also so many fun ways to get outside and enjoy autumn and one of my favorites is the corn maze. So, in between road trips to ogle the leaves, spend a fun afternoon testing your navigational skills with family and friends in a corn maze.

For over 15 years, Beans and Greens Farm in Gilford has offered one of the Lakes Region’s best known corn mazes, with a fun tractor ride to bring you to the start.

The maze is designed for difficulty, so if you’re up for a challenge, be prepared to spend at least an hour navigating through the endless turns, bridges, and dead ends.

My kids and I tried this maze last year, and they aren’t kidding! It certainly requires some serious brain power. The corn maze also includes a scavenger hunt, with clues to answer a serious of trivia questions. In previous years, trivia topics have included Harry Potter, the Olympics, and Pokémon. Last year, my boys and I managed to find every trivia answer hidden in the maze! We were tired, but proud, and the kids got to pick out little toy prizes.

met a corn maze that you couldn’t beat, then come back at night and find your way through the maze in complete darkness! On Friday and Saturday nights, you can challenge yourself like nowhere else. I love Moulton Farm in Meredith.

There are so many varieties of pumpkin, more than I’ve seen anywhere else. And not only are there lots of delicious goodies for sale at the farm stand, but Cider Bellies makes the most amazing homemade cider donuts. We always

buy a bag of fresh warm donuts from their stand, either with cinnamon sugar or a maple glaze. It’s good fuel for getting through the awesome corn maze. This year’s maze design features a goat and the number 12, which no doubt refers to the greatest quarterback of all time. The maze takes a lot of planning. It’s planted in mid-June with feed corn, after the maze designer maps out the design on graph paper. When the corn is about a foot tall, the paths are cut out using a trimmer. This takes a few days to complete. By the time the maze opens, the corn can be up to 15 feet tall!

Find the answers to the trivia questions in the maze and earn an apple. In previous years, questions involved facts about cows, pumpkins, or other agricultural topics. Outside of the maze are fun games including pumpkin bowling, and a pumpkin toss game. You can also take a tractor ride out to the pumpkin patch to find that perfect pumpkin. Entertainment in October at Taylor Community Art Harriman has been entertaining audiences since the age of 6, when he sang, danced and played harmonica in his grandmother’s restaurant. Over the years, he’s continued his knack for performing by adding drums, guitar and other percussion instruments to create his Six-Piece One Man Fundance Band routine.

Intertwined with musical performances are Harriman’s personal celebrity stories, including movie appearances with Elvis, Lana Turner and Hank Williams, Jr.; television appearances on “Hee Haw” and six years on the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon with Bob Hope and Johnny Cash, among others.

The “Maize” at Sherman Farm in Conway has been rated one of the best corn mazes in New England

by Yankee Magazine. The designer of this year’s maze was obviously on the same wavelength as the designer at Moulton Farm, since this maze also pays tribute to Tom Brady. Open on weekends only from 10 am to 5 pm, this maze is 12 acres of fun in a labyrinth that will challenge even those with the best sense of direction! Along the way, carefully consider the questions in the maze—only the correct answers will send you off in the right direction! There are various games within the maze that anyone can

participate in. You can play Farm Scene Investigation, Barnyard Bing-Oh!, and Cornundrums (corny riddles to solve). There are three phases in the maze, and you can choose which path you’d like to take, according to your ability.

Chillin’ While Grillin’ ~ It’s Bratwurst Season!

By Chef Kelly Ross Ahhh…it’s Oktoberfest season, a very original time of year. For those who love the fall season as much as I do, and enjoy tasty, fun food as well as a few great beers, this is always a much-anticipated time of the year.

Often, you can find a place locally that gets into the season with German music and beers, but one thing that I always think about this time of year is Bratwurst. Okay, maybe it is not one the healthiest options in the world, but I’m a big fan with rolling with the seasons. (Who doesn’t cheat on calorie counting at Thanksgiving or Christmas?) Why not indulge for a late day in October? Let the kids have their Halloween candy and we’ll eat Brats with a cold beverage.

I think of Brats as a blend between the German culture and the classic southwest in Wisconsin. When it comes to Brats, residents of Wisconsin consider themselves to be the masters. They take a lot of pride in the way they cook Brats. Having been the lucky guy to enjoy some of their Brat parties, I realized they knew what they were talking about.

As it turns out, Wisconsin’s largest ancestry group is German, which brings the whole puzzle together. Brats

are generally made from pork, but have also been known to include beef and veal. As I mentioned, I know many people from Wisconsin, and the only

thing that some of them differ on is the order of which they cook Brats, either boiled in beer first and then grilled, or, grilled first and then boiled in beer. I will admit I loved both ways and they are a little different.

I also enjoy Brats without being grilled - just boiled and then finished in a skillet with whatever fixin’s you would like, such as onions, peppers, mushrooms and for some, sauerkraut.

Two things almost all agree on is Brats being cooked over charcoal instead of propane. Charcoal is the tastiest way to cook on the grill, but all in all, propane does make the most sense. There is enough fat content in the Brats that it should produce ample flame to get a similar taste to the charcoal. The second thing is all seem to agree with using a pilsner beer during the boiling process. You know your beer preferences more than anyone, but pilsner is the general rule of thumb. Regardless of the cooking method, you can’t lose.

For starters, let’s go with the boil first method. You will need one 12-ounce beer for every 4-5 bratwursts. It is likely you will need more than this ratio, especially if doing this as a cookout for a bunch of people.

Combine the beer, Brats, and a large sliced sweet onion into a pan or pot. (I toss in a little granulated garlic and salt and pepper as well.) The beer should

completely cover the Brats. Boil for five minutes, reduce heat to medium, cover them until cooked throughout, usually about 20 minutes. With tongs, pull the Brats from the beer, but save the beer mixture. Grill the Brats over a medium to high heat for about 5 minutes, then turn them and continue for another 5 minutes. Then add them back to the hot beer mixture and serve on a roll or bread of choice. Depending on your guests, I suggest having a few classic accompaniments. The old school classic has sauerkraut, onions and some brown mustard. Of course, many have Americanized it by using sautéed peppers/onions/mushrooms and I’ve seen anything from ketchup to barbecue sauce used as well. All in all, a simple cooking process and these are such a great treat! I have always liked sausage and there are many varieties and different flavors. This beer cooked Brat is truly awesome and an original.

Another method of cooking the Brat is to grill it first. You should grill the Brats a little longer doing it this way than the earlier method. You still want to start heating the beer and onions on a low heat. Once the Brats are done on the grill, you add them to the warm beer mixture and turn up the heat until you get a good boil going. Again, cover, reduce heat to medium, and let simmer until done. Or you could simmer for hours if you wish.

Now it’s time to discuss my way of doing it, especially during the winter season. The past two methods are great, but I prefer my twist on it. In a cast-iron skillet, brown off the Brats in margarine or oil, rolling them around until well browned all over. I then add onions and stir and mix well. I add salt, pepper, granulated garlic and then the beer. Bring to a boil, and once again, reduce heat, cover, and let simmer for an hour or so. This format works out great. There is a similar method of doing this that most people love and that’s in a crockpot. Put the beer, a few tbsp. of butter, the sliced onion and spices in the crockpot and set the temperature on high. While the crockpot is heating, brown off sausage in the skillet or on the grill. Once browned, add to the crockpot. Time permitting, let the mixture get as hot as possible before turning the heat to low and let simmer for hours on low until ready to devour.

help themselves at a leisurely pace and depending on the size of the crowd and everyone’s timing, you will likely notice the need to add more.

4) I have talked about the usual toppings for the final product. Make sure you have a handle on these prior to cooking the Brats so you’re not scrambling at the last minute. I will add one other thought which is pretty good but not for everyone. At times, I have made more of the beer mix than needed and use some of it for a cheese sauce, which is very tasty. Take cheeses of choice, grate/shred them, mix and coat with a few tbsp. of flour and add to a medium hot beer liquid and mix in very well until thickened. Some chefs add a little cream to thin out the beer flavor but it is really good, and much like a cheese fondue, which is one of my all-time favorites.

On Wednesday, October 18 at 6:30 pm, Wolfeboro Public Library and The Friends of Wolfeboro Public Library will present Songs of Emigration: Storytelling Through Traditional Irish Music with speaker and musician Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki. This program is one of the events in the library’s year-long Connect-Discover-Explore Series.

Through traditional music, Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki relays some of the adventures, misadventures and emotions experienced by Irish emigrants. The focus is on songs about leaving Ireland, sometimes focusing on the reasons for leaving (a man who is driven from his land by English persecution), sometimes revealing what happened upon arrival (an immigrant drafted into the Union Army during the Civil War), and sometimes exploring the universal feeling of homesickness of a stranger in a strange land (a factory worker in London missing his home in County Clare). The presenter discusses the historical context of these songs, interspersing their stories with tunes from Ireland that made their way into New England’s musical repertoire, played on his fiddle or guitar.

Tirrell-Wysocki is an awardwinning fiddler who grew up playing dances and folk festivals around New England. He was first recognized as part of New Hampshire’s culture at the

Here are a few other tips that should help you out a little in the preparation of your meal.

1) If you are going to boil and then grill your Brats, especially for a crowd, you can definitely boil them the day before, refrigerate them, and finish on the grill. 2) You can use the same mentality if cooking in the crockpot.

Either grill the Brats or brown in a pan and refrigerate. In the morning, put all ingredients in your crockpot and let them simmer all day.

3) Once the Brats are cooked and simmering in the beer mixture, which should always be on a low heat, never be afraid to add more beer if the liquid is reducing faster than expected. Quite often at a traditional Brat Party, guests

The Family DNA of The Music Man Ask Megan Rohrbacher, producer of this fall’s production of The Music Man, about some of her favorite childhood memories, and she will probably immediately mention The Village Players Theater (in Wolfeboro), telling you about her place in the pit band in Oliver, or about A Christmas Carol when she was one of Bob Cratchit’s daughters and held a seasonal holiday retail job at the same time.

During Sunday matinees, she would run into the theater, breathless, to speak her lines then run back to work the rest of her shift. Megan’s mother Diane Ducret-Mork met stepfather Corky at the Village Players in the community theater’s first production of The Music Man in 1990, and at their marriage, Megan instantly gained in Willie Mork a grandmother who was a founding member of the community theater and a popular local actor who created dozens of memorable characters onstage.

On any given night of rehearsal, you’ll hear director Rosemary Lounsbury mention that The Music Man is “a family show.” It’s wholesome and fun, and appropriate for every member of the family to enjoy, but this production is also a true “family show” because nearly

half the cast is related to someone else on the stage or crew.

Chrystal (Moore) Gauvreau is introducing her sons Auggie and Ewan to the stage in this production and carries on a family tradition: she appeared in Village Players’ Oliver with her father when she was barely older than her boys are now. Lisa (Hoover) Penny was in Oliver with her parents and brother, too, and is thrilled to appear onstage with daughter Olivia in The Music Man. Kim (DeBow) Brennion is taking her kids back to her stomping grounds as a young(er) person: Sophia is a townsperson and Caleb is—truly—flipping out onstage. Erin (Heppe) Dauphinais spent many happy hours at Village Players when growing up, and now her daughter Vivienne, who plays one of the Amarylisses (try saying that, Winthrop!) gets to see what it’s all about.

One of the children in the Boys’ Band is Max, Megan Rohrbacher’s son. He carries an instrument owned by grandfather Corky in the final scene. Oh, and did we mention?

Corky is the bass voice in the School Board quartet, reprising the role his father took when his mother Willie was Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn in the Village Players’ production of The Music Man in 1990.

Colin Hay at Capitol Center for the Arts Australian musician / actor Colin Hay, who performed in the 1980s as lead vocalist of the band Men at Work and later as a solo artist, is coming to the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, H on Saturday, October 14 at 8 pm. The show is being presented in conjunction with Meadowbrook Productions.

Following the break-up of Men at Work in 1985, Hay released several major label solo albums. In 2011, he is said to have commented, “Men at Work really didn’t build a foundational audience. We came in as a pop band with enormous radio success; once that goes away and the band breaks up, the audience tends to go away with it. You’re left with what you want to make of it.”

In addition to recording, Hay also established his own recording label and made appearances in several movies and television shows (some of which

have included performances of some of his previous songs.) On January 2017, he released the first single “A Thousand Million Reasons” from his new album, Fierce Mercy. Hay also released his first audio book, in which he narrated 24 of Aesop’s Fables. He continues to perform regularly.

Odds Bodkins presents Fun Spooky Donations of Canned Goods Welcome During the month of October, the Pantry serves over 160 families on the Tales For Young Families Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday Wright Museum of World War II in Celebrate Halloween with the Gafney Library in Sanbornville as Odds Bodkins presents “Fun Spooky Tales for Young Families”. This event will take place on Saturday, October 14 at 10 am at the Wakefield Opera House, next to the library.

Odds Bodkins, master storyteller and musician, will perform tales with spooky original music on six and 12-string guitars and Celtic Harp, mystical character voices, and sound

effects, offering just enough chills for Halloween, but not too many!

The concert is free and recommended for ages 3 and up and it is open to the public. Library hours are 1 to 7 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and 9 am to 12:30 pm on Friday and Saturday.

Wolfeboro, NH, will offer 50 percent off the price of regular admission to each visitor who brings three cans of non-perishable food with them to the admissions desk. The food will be donated to L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry, which distributes the food to its clients in Wolfeboro, Ossipee, and Tuftonboro, NH. This October marks the fourth year in a row the museum has offered discounted admission in return for food donations.

The Wright Museum also will collect canned non-perishable food from anyone who wants to donate it to L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry but does not want to visit the museum.

Those people can place their cans in the collection box outside the museum’s entrance.

During the three previous years, the Wright Museum has collected over 8,000 cans of non-perishable food for the L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry to help their clients have Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. The Food

Senior Meals Meals for seniors (age 60 and over) are served at the Benz Center on Heard Road in Center Sandwich on Wednesdays at noon for a small donation. Folks and friends are always welcome. Many Sandwich seniors who enjoy Wednesday’s lunch at the Benz in Sandwich have discovered they are welcome to pop in for lunch at the Lion’s Club (Old Route 109 in Moultonboro) where meals are served Monday through Thursday.

The Moultonboro/Sandwich Senior Meals Program is available for all seniors over the age of 60. Congregate meals are held at the M’bro Lions Club on Monday through Thursday at noon. Meals on Wheels are delivered by volunteers on Monday through Thursday to those who are shut-in, disabled or in need of service. A small donation can be made for each meal.

David Mallett to Perform Singer-songwriter, David Mallett, one of America’s true original troubadours is coming to the Sandwich Town Hall Theater on Friday, October 20 at 7 pm. GMP Design and Plantings Enhance Daniel Webster Highway/Route 3 The Greater Meredith Program’s (GMP) “Ledge Project” has transformed Daniel Webster Highway/Route 3 just across from the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen’s Fine Craft Gallery. The roadside stretching from the Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce to the intersection of DWH and Oak Street was cleared and landscaped to highlight the granite cliff behind. This effort is just one of GMP’s beautification initiatives to enhance the town ahead of its 250th anniversary in 2018, and for years to come.

The idea of improving this stretch of DWH/Rte. 3 first surfaced at a meeting of GMP’s all-volunteer Design Committee in early 2015. The committee agreed that the approach into Meredith from the south on DWH/Rte. 3 makes an important first impression. Songs of Old New Hampshire by Jeff Warner Coming to Laconia’s Belknap Mill Drawing heavily on the repertoire of traditional singer Lena Bourne Fish (1873 - 1945) of Jaffrey and Temple, New Hampshire, Jeff Warner offers the songs and stories that, in the words of Carl Sandburg, tell us “where we came from and what brought us along”. He will bring these ballads to the Belknap Mill in Laconia on October 25 from 6:30 to 8 pm.

The ballads, love songs, and comic pieces, reveal the experiences and emotions of daily life in the days before movies, sound recording and, for some, books. Songs from the lumber camps, the decks of sailing ships, the textile mills, and the war between the sexes offer views of pre-industrial New England and a chance to hear living artifacts from the 18th- and 19thcenturies.

Jeff Warner connects 21st-century audiences with the music and everyday lives of 19th century people. He

presents musical traditions from the Outer Banks fishing villages of North Carolina to the lumber camps of the Adirondack Mountains and the whaling ports of New England.

Warner accompanies his songs on concertina, banjo, guitar and several pocket “instruments”, such as bones and Kew’s harp. Warner is a Folklorist and Community Scholar for the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and was a 2007 State Arts Council Fellow. He has toured nationally for the Smithsonian Institution and has recorded for Flying Fish / Rounder Records and other labels.

Funding for the Belknap Mill concert is provided by NH Humanities.

by Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Loving Laconia…that seems like a weird headline for a day tripping story about wandering to Weirs Beach and browsing the exhibit at the Laconia Library, but it really does describe how I felt about the area after a recent day trip.

It was a quiet Monday in early October when I was on my way to run some errands. As I approached Laconia, I remembered there was a new exhibit at the Laconia Library on North Main Street. It focused on something to do with Opechee Park, as I recalled, and was curated by the Laconia Historical and Museum Society.

I love the Society’s exhibits because the staff always seems to find something unique about the area to focus on for an exhibit. Old photos, funky accessories like wooden water skis, firemen’s hats, theatre playbills and much more offer a glimpse into life in the area long ago.

Opechee Park has been around as long as I can remember; it’s just one of those places I take for granted. Sitting at the far end of North Main Street, the park has a beach, a track for runners and walkers and a playground. I drive

by it often, but like so much else in life when we are busy, I sort of take it for granted.

Thus, I was happy to learn about the exhibit, which was focused on the history of Opechee Park. I thought it worth stopping to see the exhibit. The Laconia Library hosts the exhibits put together by the Historical Society – the displays are exhibited on the second

floor rotunda area of the library.

The exhibit is titled “The History of Opechee Park” and it runs through December 21. Information on the exhibit says it “celebrates an iconic gathering spot presented by the Laconia Historical & Museum Society.” We are also told that in 1871, Martin Haynes, the publisher of the Lake Village News proposed a new name, Paugus to

replace the already named Long Bay in the area. Paugus was the name of an Indian chieftain who once lived in the area. The name Opechee would replace the water in the area. Thus, the name Lake Opechee.

The exhibit is laid out around the rotunda area in glass cases and on the walls. One of the first glass cases held such interesting items as a handwritten legal document, fragile and yellowed with age. It was for the transfer of a large parcel of land that would eventually become Opechee Park. The year was 1810 and the land was transferred to a Mr. Perley.

The land eventually came into the hands of Stephen Lyford, a Laconiaarea businessman and attorney. He wanted to make local commercial boat transportation viable, popular and profitable. It seems to make sense due to the fact that transportation was limited in the area and the lakes could move people from one place to another with speedier service than horse and wagon.

October 9, 2017 • Day Tripping Continued from page 26 Endicott Rock. It must have been quite an exciting discovery when the rock, inscribed with lettering chiseled on the surface in 1652, was discovered.

It was inscribed by surveyors for the Massachusetts Bay Colony and provided Lyford with evidence of one of the earliest appearances of white explorers to the area.

Horse boats ferried passengers, livestock and packages across the waters of Winnipesaukee as well as Opechee. By 1900, the once popular horse boats had fallen out of use.

Information on the park’s Trotting Track is interesting and told me something I didn’t know: the ½-mile track at Opechee Park attracted visitors in buggies or on horses. They came dressed up to socialize and to be seen.

Later, the track was replaced with a ¼-mile running track.

Occasional harness races also took place on the track in its heyday.

Interesting old photos show the harness racing and maps of the area.

Many special clubs and groups, as well as the general public, have made use of Opechee Park over the years.

I loved an old photo of a large group from the Saint-Jean Baptiste Society.

It was of the club’s Field Day and members were all smiles as they posed for the camera. The exhibit tells us that the group had a large membership in the late 1800s and was associated with the Sacred Heart church. The French Canadian population was large in Laconia and the club had a mission of keeping alive the traditions and language and customs of those who had relocated to the Laconia area. The group often took part in events at the Fairgrounds at Opechee Park.

Speaking of fairs, the park was first called The Fairgrounds at Opechee Park until the name was shortened to Opechee Park. The Fairgrounds saw hot air balloons, exhibitions in the late summer, comedy acts and bands.

Elephants were seen during circus time in Laconia.

I was amused by the old photo of the Elks Circus in July of 1911. Circuses meant live animal acts at Opechee, and elephants were among those brought to town. The elephants were marched through downtown Laconia, and must have given the locals quite a thrill!

I remember when the large carved Native American sculpture was placed in Opechee Park in the 1980s.

It created quite a local stir and there were news stories of the giant carving.

Photos and information in the exhibit tells us that the statue weighs 24,000 pounds and is carved from a native 36-foot red oak. It is now in need of repairs to prevent further rotting from the inside. The creator of the statue has offered to volunteer his time to do the necessary repairs, but around $7,000 is needed for materials. (Those interested in donating can contact Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Dunleavy at 603-524-5046.)

The annual sled dog races have been a big part of Laconia’s winter scene for years (dating back to 1929) and the derbies are part of the exhibit. Old photos, buttons, souvenir tumblers and

other memorabilia dating back a few decades are shown.

Also commemorated are the water ski competitions once held at Opechee Park. I had no idea the area was used for water ski competitions, but old photos and posters tell of competitions dating back to the 1950s. The Weirs Ski Club formed in 1949 and grew to become the largest water ski club in the country with 350 members. The National Water Ski Championships were held on Lake Opechee in 1954 and again in 1959. (I was enchanted to see an old Championship poster dated 1959, sponsored by “The Boston Herald-Traveler”.)

From fireworks displays to sled dog racing to circus acts and much more, Opechee Park and the waters in the area are interpreted in all forms in this

marvelous exhibit.

As I headed to my car I got thinking about Endicott Rock at Weirs Beach.

It was now late afternoon, but the day was warm and sunny and I thought it couldn’t hurt to drive the few miles to Weirs Beach to see the old rock.

Parking at the beach area was easy on an October afternoon and few people were about. I saw the small stone enclosure that protects the rock; it keeps it safe from time and human hands.

I could see the carving on the stone and marveled that it was done so long ago (1652 to be exact). The Massachusetts Bay Colony surveyors tell us the governor was John Endicott; the initials of the surveyors also were included.

I sat on a nearby picnic table and watched the late afternoon boat traffic drifting slowly through the Weirs Channel as the sun sank lower in the sky. The statue atop the enclosure is of a Native American standing proud and helps us remember those who lived here for centuries long before white explorers came to the area.

These little reminders of the past and the area’s history are all around the Laconia area if you take the time to look. It is one of the many reasons, along with the Opechee Park exhibit, that I find myself loving Laconia.

Yester year Bridgewater and Newfound Lake

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Travel north from the small town of Bristol on Route 3-A, and you’ll drive through Bridgewater, a modestsized town. At one time Bridgewater was part of New Chester, later to be renamed Bristol.

Long before white men settled in the wilderness around Newfound Lake, Native Americans lived on the land.

According to Newfound Lake, by Charles Greenwood, before the lake was named Newfound, it was called Baker’s Pond or New Found pond.

After the granting of the township of New Chester, the lake was called New Chester Pond for many years.

The land was fertile and hunting and fishing plentiful. When the first settlers ventured into what would later be the town of Bridgewater in the 1750s, they discovered a pastoral, beautiful area.

The group secured a tract of land containing over 20,000 acres.

That property, located west of the Pemigewasset River, became New Chester, later divided into the towns of Bridgewater, Hill and Bristol.

It would, however, be years before anyone settled in the Bridgewater region. As with much of the central and northern New Hampshire, travel was abandoned during the French and Indian War. War parties could attack those who ventured from established

In the late 1760s, the war had ended.

Settlers returned to the New Chester area, and were the first to settle permanently there. Today summer homes and cottages dot the landscape of Bridgewater, but the early men likely saw forest when they began to build.

It remained a sparsely settled area for many years. Perhaps it was because of its remote location. Eventually that began to change.

By the late 1760s a gristmill was started which eventually enticed more people to make land claims. As the population grew, town government was

established and officials were elected.

Not long after, taxes came into being.

Bridgewater may seem like a small community, but the actual amount of land comprising the town is quite large.

Because homesteads were spread out and travel difficult, the notion of dividing the town into smaller towns arose.

In the 1780s the New Hampshire legislature approved a plan to divide the town land and population. The towns of Bridgewater and New Chester were created. In 1819 a third town, Bristol, was formed from some of Bridgewater’s land.

Bridgewater continued to grow, and when the Victorian era of grand vacations for the wealthy became fashionable, the town, with its lake proximity, was swept up in that movement.

In 1880, the first summer boarding house was built in Bridgewater near Newfound Lake. Originally called Lake View House, the structure was grand in size for its day. Three stories high, with a dining room, dance hall and 75 bedrooms all comfortably furnished, the Lake View House was reminiscent of the big hotels in the White Mountains at that time.

More businesses opened in Bridgewater in the late 1800s and early 1900s. According to History of the Town of Bristol by Richard W. Musgrove, there was once a lead and silver mine in the area. This would have likely provided some jobs for locals.

During the early 1900s, the eastern side of Newfound Lake on Bridgewater became known as “Cottage City.”

Owned mostly by professional and local businessmen, these homes were at the time the largest grouping of private cottages in the area.

One farm in the Bridgewater area was bought by millionaire E. P. Lindsey of Boston. Refurbished from top to bottom, the farm soon had a cottage for the hired help and a modernized barn, to name but a few improvements.

Many renovations also were made to the brick farmhouse. Lindsey hailed from the Newfound area, and after he made his fortune, he came to Bridgewater and bought the property.

His wife outlived him, and when she died in the 1930s the estate was valued at over $1 million.

Some summer residents loved the area so much that they put pen to paper to describe the Bridgewater/Bristol area. One such writer was Eliza Nelson Blair, a Bridgewater summer boarder.

Her book told of the residents and life around Newfound Lake years ago.

Because the Newfound Lake area was a great spot for fishing, a hatchery was started at the foot of the lake.

The state of New Hampshire soon after closed this hatchery and built a bigger structure for fish hatching in Bridgewater on a brook near the shore of the lake. The Bridgewater hatchery was near spawning beds, and was a great aid to fishermen.

Visit Bridgewater today and it may seem as sleepy a hamlet as it did in its early days. During the winter, the summer homes, cottages and boys and girls camps are shut down. Yearround residents travel to nearby Bristol or Plymouth for shopping and employment. Even during the summer when vacationers flock to Newfound Lake, there is something of the past lingering in Bridgewater. Civilization may have moved in, but in many ways the beauty, the peace and love of the land are as evident in Bridgewater as they were when the Native Americans called this place home over 200 years ago.

New Event Coordinator/Executive Director for Children’s Auction The Greater Lakes Region Children’s Auction is an annual event held every December in central New Hampshire.

Countless volunteers and donors have helped turn it into a major campaign on an annual basis. Over the 33 years that the community has come together, over $4.5 million has been raised for local charities, all through volunteer efforts, community donations and corporate sponsorships. The Greater Lakes Region Chartable Fund for Children is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps community organizations in the Central New Hampshire region.

The Board of the Greater Lakes Region Children’s Auction is pleased to announce John E. Markland as the Auction’s Event Coordinator/ Executive Director.

John has been a long-time volunteer for the Children’s Auction, but is well known for his 26 years of service in law enforcement; 23 of which were with the Gilford Police Department.

He retired as Chief of Police in 2011.

working closely with local schools and serving as a youth services officer, DARE officer and volunteer for diversion programs, just to name a few of his efforts.

In addition to his work in law enforcement, John’s passion for the community was channeled into various volunteer roles. He is a former board member of Lakes Region Community Services and the Meadowbrook

Lakes Region Singers to Start Fall Rehearsals, Seeking New Members for Next Concert Lakes Region Singers (LRS), the community choral group that performs at First United Methodist Church in Gilford, launched their fall concert season with a meeting of the advisory board in September. This planning group consists of LRS director Karen Jordan and LRS members Mary Albert, Phil Breton, Kelly Cleveland, Charlotte Cox, Lorraine Gebhardt, and Rachel Young. They discussed ways to increase their outreach to new members and to more music lovers throughout the Lakes Region. Jordan declared, “We have a friendly group of talented singers with roots in our local communities.

The creation of our youth chorus has expanded our musical appeal to all ages.”

Rehearsals for the fall concert season began on Tuesday, September 26. The Youth Chorus (for singers in grades 2-10) will meet at 6:30 pm in the church, and the Adult Chorus (for singers in grades 11-12 and all adults) will meet there at 7:30 pm. “We welcome everyone interested in performing good music, and we don’t require auditions,” said Jordan.

“If you know of anyone who might like to join us, encourage them to come, or

bring them along with you!”

There will again be two performances of the Christmas Concert, one on Friday, December 15, and another on Sunday, December 17. This year’s exciting program will include upbeat favorites such as “Sleigh Ride,” “White Christmas,” and “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” along with challenging arrangements of “See Amid the Winter’s Snow,” “Angels from the Realms of Glory,” and “Joyful All Ye Nations Rise.” Many pieces will feature vocal soloists, as well as violin, cello, flute, organ, brass, percussion, handbells, or four-hand piano accompaniments.

Pianist Phil Breton will accompany the adult performance, while Kelly Cleveland will accompany the youth chorus and also sing with the adult chorus.

According to Jordan, “We are very happy to be singing again. If you plan to join us but can’t make a rehearsal, just let us know and we’ll save a folder for you.

Vintage Car Show and Ghost Encounters at Canterbury Shaker Village Learn about vintage automobiles on a beautiful fall day or experience the otherworldly feel of a 200-year-old historic site at Halloween!
