The event will close with music and a campfire on the beach as the sun sets.

The event will take place at the Lakeside Dining Hall on the beach at Camp Calumet which is located on the north shore of Lake Ossipee, on Ossipee Lake Road, between routes 41 and 153 in Freedom. Turn onto Babcock Road on the west side of Calumet and then take a left on Service Road to reach the Lakeside Dining Hall.

Children will be admitted free of charge. As it is a family-friendly festival, patrons are asked to refrain

from bringing alcohol. In the event of rain, the festival will move into the dining hall.

The Green Mountain Conservation Group is a community-based charitable organization dedicated to the protection and conservation of natural resources in the Ossipee watershed, supporting research, education, advocacy, and land conservation.

The Ossipee watershed includes portions of the towns of Eaton, Effingham, Freedom, Madison, Ossipee, Sandwich, and Tamworth.

Laconia/Weirs Beach … In Five Hours

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Weirs Beach and Laconia on a September afternoon brings to mind early-season foliage and just a smattering of tourists. Most vacationers, admittedly, have headed home by this time of year, leaving the Lakes Region in a post-summer mindset.

That is why I assumed that a Laker story assignment to do a tour of Laconia and Weirs Beach in five hours would probably, in reality, take me only a few hours.

How wrong I was after I set out on my tour! The moral of this story is that there is still plenty to do and see in the area this time of year, even if the air has taken on a bit of a chill and the sun sets somewhat earlier.

Hour One: Now and then, I indulge in ice cream for lunch. There, I’ve admitted it. Once you experience the ice cream sundae bar at Kellerhaus on Route 3 in Weirs Beach, you probably would understand why I was willing to forego a sandwich or burger for lunch in exchange for a gooey, sweet, and delicious Kellerhaus ice cream sundae.

I started my five-hour tour/challenge at Kellerhaus and, in my opinion, it is always a good place to begin any adventure. The sundae bar is located near the entrance but, as always, I planned some extra time to browse through the rooms to see what was new for gift items, as well as to stop in the candy room. The Kellerhaus staff makes the candy on the premises, and the wonderful aroma of chocolate is always in the air.

At the ice cream sundae bar, I chose vanilla ice cream (ice cream flavors also are homemade at Kellerhaus) and then

There is caramel, hot fudge, and cold chocolate sauce, strawberries and marshmallow and whipped cream, jimmies, nuts, and much more.

Seating is in a dining area at the back of the shop with nice views from a bank of windows. The small, round tables are reminiscent of an old-fashioned ice cream parlor with charming seats.

Hour Two: After an hour of ice cream and candy deliciousness, I drove to the Weirs Beach boardwalk and Weirs Boulevard. Admittedly it was not as crowded as on a busy summer’s day but the sun was shining and I decided to park and stroll the boardwalk.

Many shops and arcades are still open for late-summer business and quite a few people were out to enjoy the afternoon. I stopped to snap some photos of the icon of Lake Winnipesaukee, the M/S Mount Washington.

The Mount will be cruising right through the fall until mid/late October and there is still plenty of time for an autumn trip. What better way to see the upcoming foliage than on the Mount, where you can enjoy the scenery from the lake?

I walked to the Weirs Beach public beach area and soaked up the sun while sitting by the water. There were still a number of boaters enjoying the water and it was fun to boat and peoplewatch.

I decided it was a good time to check out the Endicott Rock area since I had not stopped there for a few years.

nhstateparks.org, Endicott Rock may be the oldest public monument in New England. The name of John Endicott, Governor of Massachusetts Bay, and the initials of Edward Johnson and Simon Willard, Commissioners of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and of John Sherman and Jonathan Ince, surveyors, was inscribed on the rock on Aug. 1, 1652. The rock marked the assumed headwaters of the Merrimack River. Under the original Bay Charter of 1629, the northern boundary of the colony was fixed as a line three miles north of the Merrimack.

The rock is located at 17 Endicott Street and is an easy walk from the beach area. It is a New Hampshire state park and has an enclosure built around the rock to protect it from the elements, but the information carved so long ago is visible for all to see.

Hour Three: After my Weirs Beach visit, it was time to head to Laconia.

Main Street. My reason for visiting the library was more than to browse the books, although the collection is very good. The Laconia Historical & Museum Society presents fascinating exhibits at the top-floor display area of the library and currently on view is “Making Waves – Laconia’s Water Ski History.” I found the exhibit thoroughly enjoyable with lots of water ski memorabilia, information, and photos.

For those who do not know, Laconia and the Lakes Region have quite a substantial water ski history. In the coming year, a fascinating book on that history will be presented in a new book by local author Carol Lee Anderson. In the meantime, the exhibit offers quite a collection of objects and photos for those who love local history and the sport of water skiing.

If you want to see what various Weirs Beach areas and some local folks looked like quite some time ago, black-and-white photos of club members on the lake will offer a glimpse of the area’s past.

Other memorabilia include a Weirs Ski Club sweatshirt, Weirs Ski Club awards, information on the Weirs Ski Club, plus nifty ski club photos, old newspaper announcements of such exciting events as the New England Water Ski Championships at Opechee Park, old water skis from local resident Dick Binette who in 1954 competed in the Nationals held in Laconia and set a world water ski jump record, and way too many more great old items to list in one place. The exhibit runs through December and is free and open to the public.

Hour Four: I am no stranger to the Belknap Mill, located at 25 Beacon Street in downtown Laconia. I have attended concerts and events and exhibits at the Mill for years; the 1823 brick building is on the National Register of Historic Places and once was a textile mill. It now serves as a cultural center. When urban renewal changed the face of downtown Laconia, the Mill was one of just a few historic buildings to be saved from the wrecking ball.

Page 5 These days, the Belknap Mill houses a wonderful permanent exhibit on the history of the knitting industry in the Lakes Region and includes old knitting machines and photos that trace the heyday of the textile mill business that once thrived in the area.

The Power House exhibit is worth taking the time to check out as well.

According to www.belknapmill.org, “The History of the Hydroelectric Power exhibit focuses on the Belknap Mill power house and contains live demonstrations of the history of hydroelectric power and the vital role it played in the American Industrial Revolution. Working models provide hands-on experience in how water wheels and turbines work, and an electrical panel with switches gives the visitor a chance to see the setup that sent excess power generated at the mill to supply the city with electricity.”

My favorite part of the Power House, I must admit, is the actual gears used at the mill, with their wooden cogs, along with belts connecting the generators and flywheels.

Storyboards explain the evolution from water power to hydroelectric power, and the amazing, huge wooden wheels that once helped power the Belknap Mill are a breathtaking sight to see.

Hour Five: Last on my five-hour tour of the area was a walk (and some shopping!) on Laconia’s Main Street.

The street has become somewhat

of an antique alley with a number of wonderful antiques shops. I spent an hour in the Laconia Antique Center, located in the former Bloom’s Variety Store on Main Street.

The Laconia Antique Center offers booth after booth of antiques and it is a great place to while away an hour — or longer. Open year-round, the business is a multi dealer shop with everything from old photos, postcards, prints, and paintings to furniture, jewelry, china, and books, and just about anything one could wish to find!

I walked away with an old blue china plate to add to my collection of “blue plates” and saw a lot of other things I will probably come back to purchase in the future.

My day ended at the shop’s quaint

Connie’s Ice Cream Counter where I enjoyed a cup of coffee. I love that the shop owner has revived the original lunch counter with soda jerk equipment and even the old counter seating from the days when the building was a five and dime store.

As my tour ended, I realized there is a lot to do and see in the area — even after the majority of the tourists go home at summer’s end. The old saying that the area, so busy in summer, rolls up the sidewalks after the tourists leave, is not true. From the historic Endicott Rock to an ice cream sundae lunch at Kellerhaus to water skis and wooden wheels and antiques, if you take the time to look around, there is a lot to do and see in Laconia and Weirs Beach, any time of the year.

Wright Museum Announces Free Admission Can Drive Through the end of October, the Wright Museum of WWII History is offering free admission to each individual who brings in three canned food items to be donated to Wolfeboro’s LIFE Ministries Food Pantry to assist in providing Thanksgiving meals to the

less fortunate.

The food pantry, founded in 1985, serves more than 160 families on the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday weeks. It distributed nearly 120,000 meals in 2013. The pantry is especially in need of canned foods such as soup,

pasta, vegetables, tuna, and canned meats.

The Wright Museum is acting as a collection point for canned food and has placed a collection box for canned food donations outside the entrance for those not visiting the museum. The museum

asks that donors provide canned food only; it cannot accept perishable items.

The Wright Museum is located at 77 Center St. in Wolfeboro open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Steve Taylor will speak on “New Hampshire’s One-Room Schools: The Romance and The Reality” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, in the Ashland School Cafeteria.

Hundreds of one-room district schools

once dotted the state’s countryside and villages, providing most primary education for generations of children.

Although revered in literature and folklore, the small schools did have problems, notably in financing which

varied greatly from district to district.

Steve Taylor, a farmer, writer, former newspaper editor, and the state’s commissioner of agriculture for 25 years, will shed new light on the legacy of district schools in a free program

sponsored by the Ashland Historical Society, which will serve refreshments.

The Ashland School is located at 16 Education Drive, off School Street, in Ashland village.

Human Faces of the Textile Industry Robert Perreault will return to the Gilmanton Historical Society on Tuesday, Sept. 23, for a talk on the daily life of textile workers at the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company.

The presentation, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., will shed light on how people from many rural locations made the transition from an agrarian to an industrial society and how that change affected families, cultures, the nature of work, and relationships among workers.

Robert has undertaken a specialized study of New England Franco-

American culture. He conducts historical tours of Manchester and has published works of fiction and nonfiction in English and French.

Scenic Fall Tour Along the Pemigewasset

By Christine H. Randall In spite of summer-like temperatures around Labor Day, we all know that autumn is just around the corner, bringing with it the cooler temperatures and shorter days that will help to trigger New Hampshire’s beautiful fall foliage.

I like to take fall foliage tours near bodies of water — lakes, rivers, streams — as these areas tend to have the best color. Noticing that some of the leaves around central New Hampshire had already started to turn, I decided to check out the foliage and the scenery along the Pemigewasset River in a loop around Bridgewater, Bristol, New Hampton, and Ashland.

After crossing the Pemi over the Route 3 bridge on the Ashland-Bridgewater town line, I almost immediately turned left onto John Jenness Road. The road quickly intersects with River Road, and I took a left and headed south. River Road is a quiet and scenic rural road that runs from Route 3 in Bridgewater to Route 104 in Bristol, paralleling

the Pemigewasset River. The road is a favorite for those who seek a peaceful alternative to ongoing construction and traffic on Interstate-93.

The 10-mile stretch of road wends and wanders past working farms, some rural businesses, recreation areas, and even the tiny Bridgewater Town Library.

Although the foliage had just barely started to turn in early September, the maples and oaks along the road promised some great color in a few weeks. I could catch occasional glimpses of the Pemi River on the left and I soon came across the Sahegenet Falls Recreation Area, which is owned and maintained by the Town of Bridgewater. While in the summer the area is busy with Bridgewater residents enjoying the swimming and picnicking, during the off-season the area is part of a vast network of snowmobile trails which offer nice, gentle walks along

The views of the river and surrounding hills increase past the recreation area as you head toward Bristol, and shortly after River Road crosses the Bristol town line, it intersects with Route 104.

I took a left on Route 104 and headed toward New Hampton, where I had a few options for my scenic tour loop — either finish the river loop by taking a left onto Route 132 toward Ashland, which again parallels the river, or take another scenic route which might offer a little more variety.

I opted for the latter and took a left onto Town House Road which quickly intersects with Dana Hill Road. Dana Hill Road has some very nice views of distant mountains and valleys, as well as some great fall color. The road goes past numerous working farms, old cemeteries, and some interesting historical spots, including the Dana Meeting House, built in 1800.

I wound my way down Dana Hill Road toward Ashland and, at the junction of Lower Oxbow Road, I took a right, looking for color at my two favorite local mountain ponds, Sky Pond and Jackson Pond. Both ponds are somewhat remote and definitely off the beaten path, and they are both very popular with kayakers, canoeists, and fishermen.

Following along Lower Oxbow Road, I passed a couple of farms that

offered some wonderful views across the valley before the road intersected with Jackson Pond Road on the left. I decided to take the left, and followed the road to Jackson Pond, a 39-acre pond that once served as the Town of Ashland’s water supply. The land around the pond is now owned by the “Friends of Jackson Pond, LLC,” but public use is not restricted, although there is very limited boat access. The pond is 17 feet at its deepest point, and it is popular with kayakers and canoeists. The road goes on for a short distance, but it essentially dead-ends and you have to reverse direction.

Back at the junction, I took a left back onto Lower Oxbow Road and headed to scenic Sky Pond, a 14acre body of water where boating is restricted to car-top access; no motors are allowed on the pond, and fishing is limited to fly fishing only. The pond, which is stocked with brook trout, is 20 feet deep at its deepest point and it is a very popular and relaxing spot for anglers and others who enjoy floating around on inflatable rafts and in canoes.

It also is a great place to capture some fall color.

I returned to Dana Hill Road and headed back toward Ashland, passing the Dirty Worm Greenhouse on the right, which is a favorite stop for locals looking for summer and fall plants and flowers. At the intersection with Winona Road, I took a left and returned to Ashland, completing the 30-mile scenic loop.

Wolfeboro Museums Participate in Smithsonian’s Museum Day Live!

The NH Boat Museum and the Wright Museum of World War II History will open their doors free of charge on Saturday, Sept. 27, as part of Smithsonian Magazine’s10th annual Museum Day Live!

A nationwide event, Museum Day Live! offers free admission to visitors presenting a Museum Day Live! ticket, which is available at www. smithsonian.com/museumdaylive. The ticket is valid on Sept. 27 only and one ticket is permitted per household, per email address.
