Canterbuy Shaker Village - Heaven On Earth By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper You don’t have to like history to enjoy Canterbury Shaker Village. And you certainly don’t need to know a thing about the Shakers to be “kindly welcome’” at the most unusual and beautiful spot on rural Shaker Road in Canterbury. That’s the way the Shakers would have wanted it. Although all the Canterbury Shakers have passed on, you can, indeed, feel the welcome and gentle spirit of the many people who lived, worshipped, and worked at the place commonly called Heaven on Earth, the minute you step onto the property. Everything about Shaker Village exudes a slow-down attitude and it definitely feels friendly and peaceful. I visited Shaker Village on a sunny September weekday and, while this was not my first visit to the site, each time I tour the buildings and chat with the staff, I learn something new about the once-thriving religious group. I approached the village from the

Belmont end of Shaker Road and I drove by the large Shaker cemetery right before the entrance/parking lot to the village. Surrounded by a stone wall, the last resting place of the Shakers is identified simply with a large headstone right in the middle of the burial spot. The stone has one word carved on its surface: Shakers. I like that simplicity because it speaks of what the religious group was all about: concern for the group vs. the individual. My favorite Shaker, I have to admit, is Eldress Bertha Lindsay. She died in 1990 and, while I never met Bertha, I am pretty sure I would have liked her a lot. When reading about her long and spiritually rich life and her many acts of kindness, one cannot help but admire Bertha, one of the last remaining Shakers to live at the village. Her final resting place is in the cemetery and, although it may be a bit silly, I always say hello to her as I drive past.

• Day Tripping Continued from page 2 Bertha would likely be the first to insist that there is a great deal more to like about Canterbury Shaker Village than her story. Indeed, Shaker Village has a lot — buildings, history, objects, and the stories shared by the tour guides. Whether touring the village with one of the excellent guides or wandering around on your own, plan to spend at least three hours at the village to see everything and soak in the tranquility and spiritual goodness of the special place. I started my day at the Visitor’s Education Center where the museum store and admissions desk are located. The shop is full of great items, from books on the history of the Shakers to cookbooks (the Shakers, including Bertha, were skilled cooks) to children’s books to finely crafted oval wooden boxes of all sizes to Christmas items to soaps and spices and much, much more. Visitors can opt to take one of a number of tours that leave periodically Canterbury Shaker Village is welcoming with a sense of peacefulness. (Photo: from the Visitor’s Center. wooden crib, obviously handmade with care by a Shaker member, and a small bed with a tiny white child’s cloak spread out on the bed’s coverlet. What little girl wore that cloak and had her tears dried and her troubles smoothed over by a loving Shaker “mother”? I wondered. (The Shakers raised many orphans and welfare children. Parents could rest assured that their children would have three meals a day, a chance to learn a trade, and, best of all, a loving environment where they would be treated with kindness and care.) Shaker children were, indeed, allowed to be children, and they were not abused in any way, nor were they overworked. They received a top-notch education at the Shaker-run school and they had plenty of time to be children, as attested to by the toys in the exhibit. A Red Racer wooden wagon and a sled had been preserved and are a charming part of the exhibit. The second floor featured a Canterbury Sisters display with old ledgers, advertising pamphlets, and black-and-white photographs of Shaker women. Further in the exhibit are photos of beloved Shaker elders and other memorabilia from the heyday

• Day Tripping Continued from page 3 of Shaker life at Canterbury. Last was the exhibit entitled Shaker Traditions – Contemporary Translations. The exhibit showcases the many ways in which visitors are inspired to translate the Shakers’ commitment to simplicity and mindfulness into their personal expressions. It includes creative works by professional artists, creative citizens, and students who were inspired by a visit to Canterbury Shaker Village. Their contemporary works are paired with historic Shaker artifacts in the original exhibition. The exhibit is fascinating and is on display though December. In the Translations exhibit, I immediately spied a large hooked rug on one wall depicting the well-known scene that many see as they drive to Shaker Village and gaze up the hill at the row of white, beautiful buildings beyond a field. I love hooked rugs and know something about them and recognized it was the work of a local talented rug hooker, Kelly Rolfe. As I wandered the grounds, I stopped to chat with volunteers here and there, such as in the broom-making shop. The guide told me that broom-making started at Canterbury Shaker Village in 1847. The Shakers, always looking for a way to improve work and life, invented the flat broom and it was an immediately popular labor-saving

PLANS

device. By 1860, the Shakers were making 36,000 brooms a year, adding to the industry of the hard-working religious group. Sadly, broom-making at Canterbury ceased by 1890 when many Shakers had died and new members were joining less frequently. To put it simply, the Shaker numbers were dwindling by 1900 and there just were not enough people to perform the once-thriving business tasks. Next on my tour, I found the North Shop fascinating. In the large, multiuse shop a lot of activity took place. It was used for tool storage, textile production, and syrup-making, to name a few of the activities that took place in the shop. In the Sister’s Shop, many items are on display and speak of the once-busy sewing and needlework tasks that went on in the rooms. Spinning wheels, a loom, musical instruments, and other items are on display and I must admit to a bit of sadness when gazing at the objects that are now still, their former owners no longer here to make use of them. Last on my tour was the infirmary, the building where the Shakers went for medical treatment. The building was erected in 1811 and was first used as a guesthouse for non-Shaker visitors. It was remodeled and outfitted as an infirmary in the early 1840s and today is the oldest hospital building in New Hampshire. It is, indeed, a fascinating place and I never cease to marvel that

the Shakers were practicing dentistry and surgery on the spot in the very rural environment. The Canterbury community welcomed the infirmary and they most likely, with the aid of local doctors, saved the lives of many and lessened the physical ailments of not only Shakers but also neighbors who had medical problems. Before I left the village, one of the guides told me that Darryl Thompson was working at the village and I just knew I had to circle back to meet him. For those who do not know of the Thompson family and their association with Canterbury Shaker Village, it is a story worth learning. I found Darryl busy talking with visitors in the Carriage House and introduced myself. He kindly shared his story of living among the last remaining Shaker sisters and the fact that five generations of the Thompson family knew the Shakers (for 41 years). Darryl’s father, Bud Thompson, was a folk singer and, many years ago, he became interested in folk songs of days gone by. Someone suggested he research the songs of communal groups from the 1820s to 1840s. Thus, he discovered the Shakers and the thousands of songs they had written. Bud corresponded with Eldress Bertha and other remaining Shaker sisters (in the 1950s) and, as the friendship grew, they eventually invited him to come to live and work at Canterbury Shaker Village.

By the late 1950s, Bud and his family were living full-time with the Shakers at Canterbury. Darryl was a baby at the time and he laughingly says he grew up surrounded by 13 Shaker sisters! Here was someone, right before me, who lived and knew the last remaining Shakers. I could not refrain from asking what Bertha and the other Shaker sisters were really like. Smiling at the memory of the special Shaker women, Darryl said simply, “They were wonderful, kind, loving, and they had a great sense of humor!” As we chatted, he added that the last Shakers were eyewitnesses to history: They had known some of the old-time members and, as years passed, Bertha and the other sisters saw the Shaker membership dwindle. They passed on their values but, as Darryl stressed, they did not live in the past. While they would readily speak of the past at the once-thriving Shaker Village, Bertha and the other Shaker sisters were always looking forward. My assumptions about the goodness of the Shakers were proven by Darryl’s description of the women he knew as good friends. Perhaps that is why, whenever I visit Canterbury Shaker Village, I can feel the warmth and peace of all the Shakers who came to this place to live a simple, peaceful

An award-winning author for his long-running Cork O’Connor mystery series, Krueger wrote this book as a y Saturda0 Sept. 2

stand-alone novel. 8/25 Set in Minnesota in 1961, the story begins with the discovery of a corpse — that of a young boy who was considered a little slow. His body was found near the train trestle in the woods on the outskirts of town. Was it an accident or something more sinister? That opening is just the beginning of a series of other deaths that shake the world of Frank Drum, the 13-year-old narrator (told from his perspective 40 years later). Though this novel is a mystery, it also is a story about faith, hope, and pondering why bad things happen to good people. Pick up a copy of the book at Wolfeboro Public Library, which is open Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will serve refreshments at the discussion get-together. Truly Extraordinary Properties With Extraordinary Lake & Mountain Views Some of the best views of the lakes and mountains of New Hampshire are from homes built in the higher elevations. These properties are some of the finest examples of quality homes away from the hustle and bustle of the lakes. Enjoy the fresh air and unsurpassed views of the best Mother Nature can provide. From here you see sunrises and sunsets, the sparkle of the lakes, and the feeling of space you simply can’t get from homes on lower elevations. You also get much more home for the money, yet you are still close enough to take advantage of the amenities that the towns, beaches, marinas and mountains provide all year round. Come live life from above.

Glassblower Gives Old Bottles New Life Nanda Soderberg is driven by the idea of taking a found glass object — something that may have had a single use and is heading to a landfill — and transforming it into something that can be used indefinitely. The League of NH CraftsmenMeredith Fine Craft Gallery has named Nanda its featured artist for September and his beautiful, reincarnated glass pieces of art are on display at the gallery, located at 279 Daniel Webster Highway in Meredith. Nanda uses his glassblowing

experience and techniques to use found objects of glass and wine and beer bottles and turn them into goblets and bowls and other works of art. He began his experimentation and research with found glass in graduate school, realizing that he was heading in a direction not many glassblowers have taken. He reconfigures the pieces through traditional hot and cold glass processes. For more information, call 603279-7920 or stop by the gallery through the end of September to see the works.

The big pine you are looking for stands at 148 feet and is among the tallest in the state. Kevin explains that champion trees are determined by adding the circumference of the tree (in inches) at four and a half feet high to the tree’s height (in feet), then adding one-quarter of the average crown spread (in feet). The total points are then compared with other trees of the species to determine the biggest tree. The New Hampshire Big Tree Program is part of a national program operating in each state to take the official measurements and determine the state champions. Residents are encouraged to suggest possible champions which the Big Tree Program will measure to confirm. Some past champions have died and some champions have not yet been discovered, so the Big Tree Program is continually updating its listings. In preparing his book, Kevin learned to take tree measurements and he consulted with foresters and others who know the lay of the land to locate some of the big trees on his list. Some are located right in the state’s cities and towns, making them easy to find, while others are so remote that it takes an experienced hiker capable of bushwhacking and finding the way off-trail to get to the tree (a difficulty rating of “4” in his book). Spaulding High School Freshman Ben Laine, who made an impression as a special guest performer at the Rochester Mayoral Inaugural, will appear in concert with Montreal singer-composer-musician Jessica Laflamme Gardner at the Rochester Opera House on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. The gifted young musician stunned guests at the inaugural as he sang and played a touching arrangement of “America The Beautiful” on the grand piano. The audience shot to its feet with a standing ovation. The concert at the opera house will feature contemporary music by popular artists such as Billy Joel, Bruno Mars, and Coldplay, as well

as some of Ben’s own compositions. Jessica, a former member of the Montreal Jireh Gospel Choir, currently teaches jazz vocal and choral at Cocheco Arts and Technology Academy in Dover, Musicalarts Academy, and Portsmouth Christian Academy. A portion of the event proceeds will benefit the Rochester Middle School where Ben played saxophone in the school band. For tickets and information, call 603-335-1992 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays, or two hours before the show.
