Artist With A Knack For Capturing The Moods Of Summer Life Story and Photos By Thomas P. Caldwell Artist Peter Ferber has established an emotional connection with people all around the country, and even overseas, with his watercolor paintings of lakefront scenes. His works depicting summer life in New Hampshire combine his background in creating commercial architectural renderings with his experiences on the lake dating from his youth when he spent his summers in Wolfeboro. The result is a body of works that take the viewer to a serene, dreamlike state of mind. Of all his commissioned and noncommissioned works, he derives the most excitement from preparing special collections for gallery shows such as the one opening at the Art Place this Saturday, Aug. 31, and continuing through Sept. 13. “Shows are the most fun,” Peter says, “because I’m pursuing what I want to do.” He explained that the genesis for the show opening on Labor Day Weekend was a canoe excursion he took nearly a year ago. “I noticed an interestinglooking cottage on the far shore of Moultonborough Neck,” he said. “Since it was a beautiful, calm day, I set out across Moultonborough Bay to check it out. This was a stretch of shore I was unfamiliar with.” He found himself continuing from one location to another, photographing scene after scene for future use in his

Peter has found that the painting speaks to him in a way he never imagined when he created it. paintings. “By noontime I realized I had already gathered more than enough material for a whole show’s worth of paintings,” Peter said. “So that’s what I’m presenting this time: a progression of paintings from early

morning through evening, following the meandering of my paddling that day.” Peter generally works from photographs because he then has a moment frozen in time, when the

lighting and weather will not change. Plein-air paintings are difficult in New England, where a clear, blue sky can become filled with dark thunder clouds within a matter of minutes and a warm, sunny day can turn into one of torrential rainfall before it is over. Nevertheless, he has done the occasional open-air painting, such as his depiction of Endicott Street, Laconia, with a picket fence surrounded by flowers in the foreground, receding into the distance of a street lined with old homes. He also will work with other media besides watercolors, such as oils and acrylics, but he prefers the ability to “push the envelope” with watercolors. He sometimes enjoys experimenting, such as taking a nearly complete painting and applying a neutral wash over the entire scene, which makes the colors blur and run. “It unifies the painting with one color, and softens it to make it more impressionistic,” Peter says. He then goes back and touches up parts of the painting where he wants detail, creating a unique, almost dreamlike scene. “It’s a very fun thing to do,” he says. Peter said he cannot recall a time when he was not interested in painting, from grade school on. All through high school and college (he graduated from Principia College in St. Louis MO in 1976), he continued painting, although

• Ferber Continued from page 3 he admits, “I never felt I was as good as my peers,” and he decided he needed to find a job that was related to art but not working as an “artist” — hence his earlier career as a commercial illustrator. He found his niche as an artist when, in 1994, he painted the official poster for the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society’s annual show — a project he has completed every year since then. “Boat posters were a way of finding an audience,” he said. “They [the posters] were unique, and brought new people into the gallery.” Barbara Gibbs of the Art Place said she was looking for artists to show at her gallery and, when she saw Peter’s original artwork — both boats and scenes of the lake — “I knew they would be greatly popular here.” Barbara had originally opened a framing shop in Alton Bay in 1981, with a few local artists putting works on display. She later moved to Wolfeboro, finally getting onto Main Street in 1991, shortly before Peter moved permanently to the area. “His ‘Wolfeboro Afterglow’ was our first print together,” she recalled, saying that was in 1995. The Art Place has published limited-edition prints of his paintings ever since. “It’s a wonderful working relationship,” she said. “With his paintings of the area and landscapes, he provides the feeling of what people come up here for: to unwind and relax. He creates a

Typically, it is women who make purchases at galleries but, with Peter’s works such as “Morning Run” — showing a boat heading out onto the

lake — Barbara has found the prints are appealing to men, as well. Peter said many men who buy the prints say they are for their offices, so that, during a trying day at work, they can look at the painting for stress relief. To create the paintings of summer life, Peter incorporates his memories of childhood into his depictions of

cottages and lake scenery, capturing details that set the mood of a summer’s vacation. In the mid-1990s, he began getting more requests for commissioned works, and his life as an “artist” was in full swing. Even with commissioned

works, he said, he tries to steer the clients toward an honest, top-quality expression of reality. “I have people suggest a topic, and then I’ll give a suggestion, to create a cooperative approach,” he said. By 1994, he was living in the Lakes Region full-time and, within a year, he had phased out his commercial work so he could just work at painting. He especially enjoys the “happy accidents” when he is experimenting with new techniques, or when he goes to an area to photograph one scene and turns a corner to discover an even more interesting scene. In addition to his regular work, Peter does volunteer projects, directing a group of people to create a mural or doing a show to benefit nonprofit organizations. Among his fundraisers are auctions for Bald Peak and Castle in the Clouds. Peter estimates that he has done about 1,000 paintings during the last 30 years, creating about 40 works a year. There are close to 100 reproductions of his original paintings out there. Some of the time, painting is more work than at other times, and he appreciates it when a work inspires fresh energy, as the paintings for his current show have done. “Putting this show together has been particularly meaningful,” he said, “partly because of the way it presented

itself. That concentrated influx of inspiration that day has fueled all the paintings. Not since the series of the Castle in the Clouds I did five years ago have I felt this impetus. ... I didn’t want to stop working. I wanted to see what the next brushstrokes would bring out.” Peter mentioned one painting that spoke to him in a very personal way. It was a party scene at a boathouse such as might have occurred during the early years of the 20th century. The brightly lit party scene is observed from the outside where the boathouse itself is dark against a darker background of trees, and the tip of a canoe is in the foreground. “I realized that it reflected my way of objectifying what I see, standing apart from the action rather than being involved with it. I had no idea I was putting that into it when I was creating the painting,” he said. The Labor Day Weekend show will feature 15 new works, predominantly watercolor but with a large oil and some small acrylics as well. “In addition, I’ll be offering the original painting I did for the Libby Museum Centennial poster, which includes that much-loved Winter Harbor view framed by an interwoven border of animals from the museum’s collection,” he said. “Beyond the appeal of the scenes themselves, I hope that my work will stir an awareness of the value of preserving the character and history of this rich landscape we all enjoy,” he

High Meadow Farm is an impeccable Colonial house dating back to the late 1700s, sitting on a hilltop with mountain views in three directions. The house has been carefully refurbished by the owners over the past year and is exquisite in every detail. The six-stall horse barn is also in mint condition. The property is surrounded by lawns and pastures, with a lovely pond for swimming and skating, and offers spectacular views of Chocorua and the Sandwich Range. A conservation easement on much of the property protects the surrounding woodlands and the abundant wildlife. High Meadow Farm is one of the few grand hilltop properties remaining in New Hampshire and is not to be missed. Realizing A Dream: Patriot Inn To Open reality of taking over an inn that had suffered from neglect as it went through foreclosure and therefore needed a lot of work to bring it back. The owners’ residence also had sustained damage from a fire and, while the underlying structure had been repaired, it remained unfinished.

Story and Photos By Thomas P. Caldwell If it was Newhart that inspired Bill Kennedy to become an innkeeper, it was his love of German food that brought him and his wife, Linda, to Danbury where they are reopening the former Inn at Danbury after making some necessary renovations. Bill said that Bob Newhart’s show, in which his character operated a fictional inn in a small, rural Vermont town, appealed to him because of the way the innkeeper interacted with the local people. Bill said he knew he would enjoy that social aspect, even though he also understood that operating an inn takes a big commitment.

However, the purchase price was right. Bill said he had started searching the Internet for an inn that was for sale while he was serving as a commissioned officer in the US Air Force, stationed in Vogelweh, Germany. He came across the Inn at Danbury because of the authentic German food it served. The initial asking price, while quite • Patriot Inn Continued on page 27

Page 27 with an offer and, to his surprise, the bank accepted it. Bill and Linda at last found themselves owning their own inn.

• Patriot Inn Continued from page 26 reasonable for an 8,000-square-foot inn on 5.1 acres, was too high for someone on a military salary. Over the subsequent years, when he was deployed to Afghanistan to help train the Afghan State Police in Adraskan, he watched as the asking price for the inn kept dropping, from $895,000 to $600,000, to $495,000, then $440,000. Yet there were no buyers and it eventually went to foreclosure. Bill said he had lost track of the inn until he retired from the military in 2011 and saw in a weekold newspaper that the inn had gone to auction. When he called the auctioneer to find out who had bought it, he learned that the sole bidder had failed to offer enough to satisfy the bank. The auctioneer encouraged him to contact the bank

They hoped to reopen what is now known as the Patriot Inn at Danbury by November 2012, but there was more work than they anticipated, so they pushed the opening back to September 2013. In the meantime, Bill made an unsuccessful bid for New Hampshire governor. While he says he never expected to win, he enjoyed the campaign and felt he had brought forward some issues that needed to be addressed.

clothes since she was 18-years-old. The Kennedys also had previously operated a 2,000-square-foot collectibles store known as Sports Fanatics LLC, and they continue to make a lot of sales online. They figured that opening a gift shop on the premises would provide additional funds to help get the rooms ready for rental. The third step would be to get the kitchen operational for meals and the fourth would be to reopen the bar. Linda said she previously had some experience at an inn, having worked at Howe’s Hotel on Long Sands in York ME when she was 15-years-old. Like Bill, she had dreamed of owning an inn of her own. “I’m a work-a-holic,” she says, noting that she grew up in Newmarket and Exeter as part of a family of seven girls and three boys, and she went to work at age 12, doing babysitting. She would hold other jobs, such as a waitress in a soda shop, with her first “real job” coming at age 16, working at Pease Air Force Base, typing orders for the transport of household goods. Linda said that, with the opening date for the Patriot Inn set for Labor Day Weekend, she has been

concentrating on getting rooms ready for rental, but she still hopes to open the gift shop in the near future. She is accepting limited consignments for the gift shop and she hopes to use a percentage of the shop’s sales to fund a scholarship for local students. She also wants to offer a monthly suit service to students who are seeking a job and is seeking donations in order to offer the suits on a loan/gift basis. The inn, originally a roadside farmhouse built in 1850, currently offers six rooms with private baths, each with its own theme, such as the Rose Room and the Africa Room. Plans call for offering four additional rooms in the back section and one in front as the renovations continue. Many of the furnishings at the inn are antiques that the Kennedys shipped back from Europe, many of them Art Deco pieces, and some antiques dating back to 1850. They have been pondering a theme for the dining room which currently holds an eclectic collection ranging from trains and railroad lanterns to knick-knacks, as well as some period decorations, including arms. The deck area outside the dining room offers seating for breakfast which Linda said will be European• Patriot Inn Continued on page 29

There will be coffee and orange juice, cereal, yogurt, and fresh fruit to round out the offerings. Their idea for the menu, once the kitchen is open, is to offer one or two entrées per day as daily specials, one of them being the German food for which the inn had become famous. The focus will be on “common man” food. They also plan to offer special menus for groups that might like to rent the inn for wedding parties, family reunions, or other private parties. Linda said they already have reservations for two weddings. With his interest in history, Bill said there also may be theme weeks where the inn focuses on Revolutionary or Civil War

Going through their checklist of things to be done before their Labor Day opening, the Kennedys acknowledge that, even after the inn opens, there remains plenty of work ahead. They will be renovating the barn for their own residence after addressing cosmetic needs such as repainting the exterior and redoing the roofing.

Day Tripping In Peaceful Freedom Story and Photos by Kathi Caldwell-Hopper

It must be cool to live in a village named Freedom. That was my thought as I set out on a summer Sunday afternoon for the trek to rural Freedom, which borders the state of Maine. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about Freedom. After all, it was a long drive from my home base in the Laconia area. It was the height of summer with very beautiful weather,

which meant there could be oodles of traffic. However, I needed to get out and away for an afternoon and this seemed like a fortuitous story assignment. (I mentioned to The Laker’s editor at a springtime editorial meeting there was a neat little village store in Freedom and maybe it would make a good day trip subject.) “Why not?” I asked myself. “Why not just get in the car and forget your worries about traffic and the long drive?” (Not to mention that I wasn’t exactly sure where Freedom village

was located.) I set out on Route 11 from Gilford and drove through Alton and Wolfeboro and on to Route 28 north/Center Street (in Wolfeboro) to Ossipee. At the traffic lights next to Hannaford shopping center in Ossipee, I turned left and headed on Route 16 north/ White Mt. Highway. A few miles later, I took a right turn onto the Route 25E ramp and a right at the end of the ramp. After a five-mile drive through very pretty rural country, it was a left onto Route 153 N/Green Mountain Road.

August 26, 2013

Drive a few miles (you will see Bobby Sue’s Ice Cream on the right on this road) and then take a right onto Village Road. (I was deceived when driving Village Road because it appeared to be purely a country road that did not look as if it would lead to a village, but appearances in a rural area can be quite deceiving). Soon I took a left onto Elm Street and found myself in the charming Freedom Village. By the time I reached Freedom, it was

• Day Tripping Continued from page 32 mid-afternoon and very quiet. “What a gorgeous little place,” I thought to myself. Freedom is the epitome of a New England country village, with a town center lined with whitewashed, beautiful old homes. It is indeed a “blink and you miss it” village, but gorgeous enough to make up in appearance what it lacks in size. The village church had finished Sunday services and only a few people were to be seen leaving and bidding friends farewell at the front door. Next to the church was the

Freedom Town Hall, also closed up on a Sunday afternoon. All the activity was happening around the beautiful building across the street, the Freedom Village Store. I truly felt as if I had stepped back 100 years or more when I saw and parked in front of the Freedom Village Store. It is architecturally a three-story structure with a Mansard roof and was built in approximately the 1870s. With a light cream paint job and darker trim, the store stands out well among the whitewashed village structures and has a decidedly Victorian architectural style. This is the kind of place that has

always been the hub of village life. It was to early villagers and rural farmers what a big supermarket or department store is to today’s shopper. At the store, one could get gossip, the latest world news, flour, sugar, supplies of all sorts … and for children, there was always penny candy. When I stepped inside the store, I really did feel like a stranger passing through an 1800s tight-knit community general store. A friendly lady smiled at me from behind the counter and a group of local men and women sitting around a table enjoying coffee and conversation stopped their socializing and glanced at me with smiles of

greeting. A very friendly Husky dog wagged his tail and approached to say hello from his napping area behind the counter. The store had a lot to see and I began my browsing on the right side of the huge room where the work of local artisans and crafters was on display. There were baskets, candles, painted woodenware, and watercolors on display. At the back of the store, light snacks, baked goods, ice cream, and coffee were for sale and visitors could sit inside or on the back deck where the

coffee, talking about politics and local news and, from the sounds of their laughter, probably telling a good joke or two! I browsed the displays of crafts and artwork (as a rug hooking enthusiast, I was happy to see some handmade hooked rugs and mats for sale) and finally made my way to introduce myself to the lady — and the Husky

August 26, 2013 cannot help but slow down the pace when in a place where it is so quiet and tranquil that laughter and chatter from the church group floats over the air and a bird’s song is the only other sound. I saw a pretty sign near a charming home, with the wording Freedom Gallery — Fine Art and Local Crafts, but noticed it was closed on Sundays. I made note of it and it will be a day tripping adventure for another day. I decided to see if there was anything else of note in Freedom village and I drove on Elm Street to find, not far away, the town’s historic and very pretty bandstand, located on a rise. Nearby was the Freedom Historical Society. The historical society building was founded in 1965. The society’s barn was built by volunteers in 1981 and houses a collection of farm tools, machinery, and vehicles that were in use before electricity or gasoline engines. A wonderful collection of old photographs, portraits, maps, and posters are displayed in the meeting room, which also has a growing lending library. In the society’s Allard House

business, especially since the building had served as a general store in the past. The building’s owners, as part of the initial planning group, were very supportive of the idea and were eager to see their store space occupied. It appears that the Freedom Village Store offers a bit of everything, just as general stores did in the distant past. The store offers a place for community events, artisan receptions, a meeting space, and a central location where local organizations can advertise activities and events. The store sells high-quality consigned goods, carefully chosen purchased merchandise, beverages, and food. “We are a great swap shop,” the lady behind the counter laughed. “If you are looking for a sofa or table, you might find it here if someone has brought it in to donate or swap!” After my visit to the Freedom store (which, by the way, is open yearround), I strolled through the village area and took some photos of the beautiful old buildings. I could feel any modern-day worries and stresses roll of my shoulders in the peace and quiet and beauty of the setting. One

• Day Tripping Continued from page 36 (acquired through a bequest of Margie Allard in 1977), there is Freedom memorabilia, mostly items donated by local residents. The furnishings generally reflect the late 19th century, when most of the village houses were built. There is an Estey parlor organ, period costumes, a tiny dollhouse, a surveyor’s compass, photographs, books, and many other unique items. The historical society is a busy organization and I marveled at the energy and focus of the group that offers so many programs. Talks of a historical nature are presented all summer; still to come on the lineup is New Hampshire’s One-Room Rural Schools: The Romance and the Reality, presented by Steve Taylor on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. in Freedom Town Hall. Also offered on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. will be Genealogical Research and Family Histories presented by Diane F. Gravel. Preceding the talk with be the society’s annual membership meeting and pot-luck supper at 5:30 p.m. The Masonic Hall in Freedom was constructed in 1830 as a church building. After the congregation found a new home, the local Masonic Temple purchased the building in 1926 and created a two-story space with a meeting hall on the second floor and a

community gathering space and kitchen on the ground floor. The building has continued to be a central part of community life since then, and was recently added to the NH State Register of Historic Places. After leaving the Freedom village area, I backtracked and just had to stop at my favorite ice cream spot, Bobby Sue’s. I first discovered the ice cream business some years ago when I spied their really neat and rustic little ice cream “shack” with wooden signs listing more ice cream flavors (all homemade) than I had ever seen in one place. They won me over with their Indian pudding Ice Cream, which I never had before trying it at Bobby Sue’s. The owners of the ice cream shop built a new and enlarged space recently and it is a great place to visit for a truly homemade and oh-so-delicious ice cream. Driving home as the sun was setting on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, I realized how relaxed I was after my visit to lovely and historical Freedom village. “It really must be cool to live in Freedom,” I mused once again, with my head full of images of oldtime buildings, the camaraderie of neighbors, and the step-back-in-time nature of Freedom NH.
