Exploring Meredith … In Five Hours

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper I love the town of Meredith, especially in the summer. There is no place finer on a sunny day in the height of summer than the town by the bay with its myriad of shops and great eateries and interesting places to explore.

With an assignment from The Laker to explore Meredith in five hours, I chose a warm August Saturday for my adventure.

Hour One: I love turkey, so I decided to start my day at Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant at 233 Daniel Highway for a great lunch. I ordered a turkey sandwich and a cup of the restaurant’s not-to-be-rivaled turkey soup (great in the summer but especially cheering and warming on a blustery winter’s day or to take away the March mud season doldrums!). As I enjoyed my lunch, I gazed at all the interesting turkey platters on the walls: The huge collection of platters with different turkey patterns is a Hart family tradition; loyal repeat customers have been known to donate a platter to the restaurant from time to time to add to the collection.

I decided to forego dessert at Hart’s in anticipation of an ice cream elsewhere later in the afternoon (although Hart’s serves up great pies and other sweet ways to end a meal).

Just down the road, no more than a quarter of a mile, I decided to make my first stop at the League of NH Craftsmen-Meredith Fine Craft Gallery at 279 DW Highway. The shop

at the League’s annual fair at Sunapee last summer: Amee Sweet-McNamara.

Amee’s gorgeous Soutache and Bead Embroidery offer one-of-a-kind pieces of fine-art jewelry. I was thrilled to see Amee’s jewelry at the Meredith shop.

The pieces offer an endless array of colors woven in intricate designs. The effort and dedication Amee has put into each piece, stitch-by-stitch, makes for incredible jewelry that is mindboggling.

Hour Two: I love used items and antiques and nothing makes me happier than getting a good bargain.

• Meredith Continued from page 3 I took time to browse the collection of upscale handbags for sale because I am thinking of something new for the upcoming fall season.

By the time I had finished my Consignor’s browsing, I was lured next door to the wonderful and festive outdoor atmosphere of the Town Docks restaurant. Part of the Common Man family of restaurants, the Town Docks offers an ice cream window as well as lakeside seating right by the town docks where boats of all sizes come and go all summer long and the relaxed atmosphere of the sandy, outdoor tiki bar. (There are free tie-ups for those who arrive by boat.)

I decided to indulge in a salted caramel ice cream and I have to say

the kiddie size was pretty darned large and very reasonably priced! I enjoyed sitting at an outdoor table under the shade of a big umbrella while peopleand boat-watching, as music played and everyone was in a festive, laid-back summer state of mind. (All that was missing was Jimmy Buffett arriving by boat with tropical drinks and songs!)

After my ice cream stop, I strolled the town docks area where there is parking available for cars … and space for boats to dock. Hesky Park is located in this waterfront area and I loved the unique outdoor sculptures that are enlivening the park and elsewhere in Meredith this summer. There also are picnic tables and a number of families were enjoying an afternoon picnic in the park, soaking up the sun and summer fun atmosphere. (The sculptures in the park that are part of the Sculpture Walk

Hour Three: One of the things I love about Meredith is the chance to visit Mill Falls Marketplace in the downtown area. The old mill building with a myriad of shops is a great place to spend an hour or longer. I started my Mill Falls shopping trek at the Country Carriage, located on the upper level of the marketplace. The shop is full of wonderful things, from fun and unique gifts and cards to holiday items to calendars, soaps, handbags, and oh so much more. I was particularly attracted to new (at least new to me), large Lake Winnipesaukee pillows with vintage photo scenes on the pillow covers.

On the floor below, I browsed through Adornments, a chic women’s specialty shop full of beautiful jewelry and clothing.

On the lower level, things got sweet for me at Lee’s Candy Kitchen. The shop is a great candy stop, and I loved the many rows of sweet treats in big clear glass jars as well as the chocolatecovered candies with a variety of filling flavors.

I loved the outdoor seating at the Waterfall Café at Mill Falls and noticed that many people were enjoying a cocktail or lunch with friends near the waterfall. (Giuseppe’s Pizzeria and Ristorante also is located in the Mill Falls building and was busy serving pizza-lovers on the day I visited.)

Hour Four: Next to the Mill Falls Marketplace complex, I stopped at Innisfree Bookshop, one of my all-time favorite bookstores. The store carries top best sellers and all sorts of great

books for children and adults in many subjects, as well as puzzles and games, cards, and more.

I strolled the brick walkway around the side of Mill Falls Marketplace to stop at Cozy Cabin Rustics, a unique furniture and mattress store.

I love Adirondack-style and rustic home décor and this shop sure has lots of both! There were many large room ensembles with wood and log furniture, from rockers to headboards and much, much more. Everything was simply beautiful and could easily fit in a variety of homes.

Hour Five: After visiting the Mill Falls shops, I headed up Main Street to see what was new in the many shops lining the street. I just had to stop at the VynnArt Gallery, tucked on a little side avenue off Main Street (30 Main Street, to be exact). I love the gallery because it features such a variety of original art, from paintings to pottery and much more. The artwork for sale in the cozy gallery offers everything from abstract to representational styles and much of the work is by local artists.

I have to admit I have a weakness for vintage décor and style and hippietype shops. I was a teen during the late 1960s and the free spirit culture is still appealing to me when I see a shop that features such items. Such as the case with Providence by C&B, a unique shop at 31-A Main Street. The shop is hard to label because it has a little of everything … and a whole lot of charm! I felt it was a bit like the funky

I could have stayed in the shop for hours, but the afternoon was sliding away and I wanted to at least stop briefly at the antiques shops on the street.

It would take pages to list all I saw in each shop, but suffice to say the shops — Waukewan Antiques, Once New Vintage Wares and Salvage, Antiques at Meredith Bay, Bonita D Story Antiques, and the wonderful Chi’-Lin Arts & Antiques of Asia — were full of wonderful antiques!

There were more shops to explore, as well as the Meredith Historical Society’s Main Street Museum which holds many artifacts and fascinating local treasures; and, of course, the unique American Police Motorcycle Museum at 194 DW Highway — but the day was ending and I had used up my allotted five hours to explore the always-fascinating town of Meredith.

If I learned anything on my writing assignment, it is that a person could sure spend a lot longer than five hours in Meredith. There is much to see and explore in the town. If you like ice cream, turkey, antiques, eclectic specialty shops … you name it, and Meredith most likely has it!

Learn A Bit About History From Highway Markers Story and Photos

Randall I’m sure most of us do this — I know that I often do — in a hurry to get to our destinations, we barely notice those little green historical highway markers that dot the edges of the roads all throughout the state. But those markers offer fascinating tidbits of information about the local historical landscape, as well as commemorating special events, people, and buildings that helped shape New Hampshire history. So, if you have a moment, it’s worth stopping to take a look.

With the most recent installation at the Route 4 crossing of the Mascoma River in Enfield, there now are 241 historical highway markers located throughout the state. The oldest one is located in Pittsburg at the site of the former Indian Stream Republic (an area of land which, caught in a territorial conflict between Canada and the United States, established an independent republic in 1832 but subsequently became part of Pittsburg in 1836).

One of the newest markers is located on Route 140 in Belmont, commemorating the rehabilitation, restoration, and preservation of the historic Belmont Mill.

Probably one of the most unusual signs sits in North Lincoln, near the Indian Head Resort on Route 3. The marker gives a brief summary of the story of Betty and Barney Hill of Portsmouth who claimed in 1961 that they were abducted by aliens in a UFO while driving through Franconia Notch.

The Enfield marker honors that town’s historic origins: “This village, formerly called North Enfield, grew around mills powered by the Mascoma River. In the 1840s, railroad service and economic investment by the Enfield Shakers laid the foundation for its growth as a mill village that prospered over the next 100 years. The village’s connection with the Shakers is a defining element of its economic and cultural history. In 2010, Enfield Village was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.”

I decided it would be fun to do a quick tour to check some of them around the Lakes Region and, incidentally, learn a few surprising and lesserknown facts about some of the interesting people, events, and places in our state.

I started first in Ashland, where you can find two markers, one located on Route 3 in the center of town and one located at the historic railroad

• Markers Continued from page 7 station museum on Route 132. The one in the center of town recognizes Dr. George Hoyt Whipple, an Ashland resident who is credited with doing the research that led to the development of liver therapy for anemia, winning the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1934.

His boyhood home, now a museum operated by the Ashland Historical Society, is located nearby on Pleasant Street. It is open during July and August on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m., and admission is free.

The second marker, located on Route 132 at the railroad station, commemorates the Boston, Concord, and Montreal Railroad which, in its heyday during the 19th century, is said to have “contributed greatly to the economic development of central and northern New Hampshire and to the growth of tourism in the Lakes Region and the White Mountains”.

The adjacent train depot is a museum operated by the Ashland Historical Society, open on Saturdays in July and August, from 1 to 4 p.m. It still occasionally serves as a passenger stop for the Winnipesaukee/Hobo Railroads during the summer and fall foliage seasons.

My next stop in the area was in Holderness, at the junction of routes 175 and 175A. Historical Marker No. 39 gives recognition to New Hampshire Statesman Samuel Livermore (17321803) who at one time was the proprietor of more than half the town of Holderness. Livermore was a lawyer, congressman, and senator who also served as New Hampshire’s first attorney-general and second chief justice. According to the marker, “In 1788, he spurred the State’s approval of the proposed Federal Constitution, thus insuring its ratification and the formation of the present Government of the United States.”

Just a short distance away, on Route 175A as you cross the river

into Plymouth, Historical Marker No. 189 gives information about stream gauging, which is used to determine available water power by continually monitoring the level of the water in a river and measuring the rate of discharge. The marker notes that the original gauge, which once was attached to an abutment of a covered bridge located at the site, has been continually monitoring the Pemigewasset River’s water levels since 1886, making it the longest continuous stream gauging site in New Hampshire.

I then headed up Route 3 to the Blair Covered Bridge in Campton, located over the Pemigewasset River between routes 3 and 175. The marker is located on the Route 3 side (west) of the river.

entirely within the boundaries of the State of New Hampshire. It is in the Long Truss style with arches, and the historical marker at the west side of the bridge states that it is the only surviving example of Colonel Harriman Long’s patent to “retain wedges at the lower chords by which the trusses were prestressed during construction, stiffening the bridge against the weight of traffic.”

Milton Graton and his son, Arnold, restored the one-lane bridge in 1977 at a cost of just over $59,000. The bridge sustained extensive damage during Hurricane Irene a couple of years ago and was closed to traffic for a lengthy period of time due to ongoing repair work, but it is slated to re-open this summer.

The original Smith Millennium Bridge was built in the 1780s and it has been rebuilt twice since then, most recently in 2001 by Stanley Graton, grandson of Milton Graton. The bridge is 170-feetlong and 60-feet-high, with two travel lanes and a pedestrian walkway on one side. The bridge is said to be the strongest covered bridge in the world, with a load rating of 80,000 pounds (40 tons). I meandered along West Shore Road, enjoying the views of Newfound Lake until I once again joined up with Route 3-A, taking a right to drive south through the town of Bristol towards the village of Hill.

In Hill, I stopped at Highway Marker No. 162 on Route 3-A to read about the historic relocation in 1940-41 of .COthe M entire village, which had been located along the Pemigewasset River.

Following the devastating flood of 1936, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the Franklin Flood Control Dam and the state informed Hill residents in 1937 that their town was slated to become a flood control reservoir for the dam project. Many of the residents Region. bought land on higher ground nearby and, with the help of state planners, they built a new model town and subsequently moved. The marker states that Governor Berry “was instrumental in the creation of several New Hampshire regiments, including the 3rd, home of the Nevers’ band, still active today.”

I wonder how many people drive by the fascinating place daily without noticing it? Historical Marker No. 129 states, “The large mortar found here is in a large boulder of glacial origin first hollowed out by water, then by many years of apparent use of Abnaki Indians, and later by the first settlers for grinding corn or maize which was made into cakes and baked over open fire.”

Another boulder on the lot depicts a carving of a shad, a type of fish similar to a river herring which apparently was a favorite staple of the Native Americans in the region. The marker notes that shad disappeared from the Winnipesaukee River after the dams were built, as they were unable to swim upriver to spawn.

Libby Museum Has Egyptian Exhibit Two summers ago, Priscilla Griffin dropped off a box of items at the Libby Museum. Most of them were old newspaper articles and books, and duplicates of Dr. Libby’s greeting cards.

Yet, among them was a hidden treasure from long ago.

Inside a plastic baggie, inside an envelope and then yet another envelope, was a letter neatly folded, holding a piece of ancient linen.

The undated letter stated, “Memoranda of particulars known to me respecting a piece of ancient linen.

“It was taken by me from the wrapping of a mummy at the time of opening the coffin some 25 or 30 years ago. This was purchased in Egypt by the late Honble James Lerrier and presented to the Montreal Natural History Society.

The coffin was made in 2 pieces of hollowed out wood, thus and on the outside was covered with inscriptions. These inscriptions remained for years undeciphered, but at length a gentleman turned up who was versed in Egyptology, and in the language, and he read and

translated the writing. This was to the effect that the body contained in the casket was that of a high and mighty? princess of the royal line, and the date of death was either shortly before or shortly after the time of Moses, I cannot now remember which.”

T h a t specimen has been framed and now is included in the Libby Museum’s permanent collection. Questions remain: Why was it tucked away in an old box?

How old is it, really? How did it get here? Where is the mummy now?

Located at 755 North Main Street in Wolfeboro, the Libby Museum has a collection of natural wonders from New Hampshire and around the world. The museum is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.

It is closed on Mondays. There is reduced-price admission for those ages 6-12, with children 5 and under admitted free.

Farm To Table Feast To Benefit GALA Those who enjoy locally grown food will gather on Tuesday, Sept. 16, for the sixth annual Farm To Table Feast, sponsored by Global Awareness Local Action (GALA). The event will take place at 6 p.m. in the barn at Moody Mountain Farm in Wolfeboro.

The highly anticipated event features a mouth-watering, five-course, locally sourced meal made possible through a collaboration of the region’s finest agricultural and culinary professionals.

One hundred twenty guests will enjoy an evening of food, fellowship, and fun among the rough-hewn timbers, antique sleighs, and carriages that color the historic New England barn, backdropped by the beautiful Ossipee Mountains.

The rustic natural setting seems fitting for an organization that strives to build a sustainable community through hands-on homesteading workshops, contra dances, and the popular SustainA-Raisers, which gives a green spin to the original “barn-raiser”.

GALA notes that, of all the regions in the United States, New England produces the least amount of food for itself. In other words, we live in the least food-secure, and therefore the most vulnerable, region in the country.

GALA, along with other nonprofit organizations in the region, is trying to reverse that startling statistic. The Farm to Table Feast is one event that helps by deepening connections within the local food system. Not only will the meal highlight just how delicious and versatile locally grown foods can be prepared; it also brings chefs, farmers, and foodies together around the same proverbial (and literal!) table to strengthen relationships that lead toward a more resilient and robust local economy and food system.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Mary E. Westfall, speaking

on Returning Home: Reclaiming and Celebrating Our Sense of Place.

Reverend Westfall is the senior minister at the Community Church of Durham, United Church of Christ. Her doctoral work focused on the role spiritual values play in creating and maintaining a sustainable world view that is just and compassionate.

In Mary’s own words, “The world is filled with vast beauty and mystery, yet how easy it is to become overwhelmed by the magnitude of the challenges facing us as individuals, communities, and nations. Fear, denial, and numbness can be our response. However, the threat of despair and inertia can be overcome by a renewed hope and sense of purpose as we reclaim our own sense of belonging to Earth and celebrate the possibilities these times invite. Lost River’s New Bird Cage Offers Great Views

By Christine H. Randall Whether you have to climb the sides of a mountainside cliff or descend into a river gorge, exploring natural caves in New Hampshire is always a popular family activity. Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves in North Woodstock obviously falls into the second category, and this natural attraction has been a source for fun and adventure for more than 100 years.

If you are looking for great views of the gorge and Kinsman Notch, a new feature that just opened this month is the “Bird Cage” which is located in a “tree house” and accessed by a 60-footlong suspension bridge spanning the upper gorge. There also is a new Adventure Trail which is a 750-footlong boardwalk trail through the forest near the base of the Dilly Cliffs.

the last glacial period, more than 10,000 years ago, by a combination of glacial and water erosion. Over time, huge boulders crashed down into the river gorge from the cliffs above.

The boulders created caves and, in effect, “hid” the river underground for stretches at a time. The Jackman brothers, two young boys who were fishing in the area, first discovered the caves in 1852. Lyman Jackman suddenly disappeared, having fallen 15 feet into a cave filled with water (now known as “Shadow Cave”).

After his brother, Royal, rescued him, the boys explored the gorge further and, 40 years later, Royal Jackman led the first guided tours of Lost River. The gorge and the surrounding 148 acres have been owned by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests since 1912, with boardwalks and stairs

built in to make the exploration of the caves easier. Lost River currently is leased and operated by White Mountain Attractions.

The trip through the gorge is about three-quarters of a mile long, and it lasts about one and a half hours, depending, of course, on how many caves you decide to explore. It is best to wear comfortable clothes and good walking shoes. The trip begins and ends at the Visitor Center, where you buy your tickets and pick up a trail guide.

The Visitor Center houses the ticket counter, a cafeteria, interesting historical displays, and a well-stocked gift shop. There also is a small Forest Society building located near the Visitor Center that features information and displays about native wildlife.

descends 300 feet into the gorge.

There are more than 20 named natural features, caves, and points of interest along the three-quarter-mile boardwalk tour, many of which have been given names from Norse Mythology, such as “Thor’s Caldron”, “Odin’s Cave”, “Asgard”, and “Fenris the Wolf”, as well as Roman mythology: “The Judgment Hall of Pluto”. The Judgment Hall of Pluto also features a 20-foothigh underground waterfall.

The caves are rated for difficulty, with the most difficult (e.g., “The Lemon Squeezer”) requiring a great deal of agility and ability to crawl through small spaces on your hands and knees.

You definitely shouldn’t wear your best clothes if you plan to make your way through these caves! Most of the

Located on the grounds outside the Visitor Center is the popular Lost River Mining Company where children can try their luck panning for minerals and fossils. A good place to enjoy your lunch or hold a group function is the 20’ x 40’ covered picnic pavilion located next to the Visitor Center.

A free Nature Garden Walk, located between the trout pond and the Visitor Center, features more than 300 varieties of native plants, shrubs, and trees. It is accessible directly from the Visitor Center without going on the Cave Walk or paying an admission fee.

I admit that, after visiting Lost River numerous times over the past several years, I still enjoy the Yankee humor expressed on a sign next to a suspended “weather rock” located near the Visitor Center: “Dead On Weather Predictor: If rock is wet, it’s raining. Warm, it’s sunny. White, it’s snowing. Moving, it’s windy.”

Lost River is located about six miles west of North Woodstock on Route 112, and it is open from mid-May to mid-October from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

(5 p.m. in May, June, September, and October). There are discounted admission rates for those ages 4 – 12, and admission is free to children ages 3 and under when accompanied by an adult. caves at Lost River, however, fall into the intermediate or easy category, and all can be bypassed by staying on the boardwalk.

Informational signs about local flora, fauna, history, and geology are placed strategically throughout the gorge.

Probably one of the most popular sights in the gorge is Paradise Falls, an above-ground, 35-foot waterfall.

The waterfall flows over two pegmatite dikes into a large pothole below — one of many potholes at Lost River created by water erosion and the scouring effects of sand and silt. “Giant Pothole”, one of the tallest potholes in the country, measures about 60 feet high and almost 30 feet wide. Some of the potholes are called “hanging potholes” since a portion of the rock has broken off over time, due to weather, erosion, and gravity.

As you exit the gorge and return to the Visitor Center, you can walk through a covered bridge and enjoy the serenity of a trout pond.

If you are looking for a nighttime adventure, Lost River holds Lantern Tours on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the season. These are guided tours through the gorge which take about one and a half hours, beginning at 8 p.m. The caves and boardwalks are lighted with lanterns, and headlamps are provided to participants. Groups range from five to 20 people and reservations are required. The tours are not recommended for children under the age of 5. In May, June, September, and October, the tours

Gilford Church To Hold Fair/Silent Auction The Gilford Community Church will hold its annual Summer Fair and Silent Auction on Friday, Aug. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 23, form 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The 30th annual Gilford Rotary Club pancake breakfast will take place in the Gilford Youth Center from 7 to 10 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Part of the town’s old home day celebration, the fair on Friday evening will offer a limited presentation, with no jewelry until Saturday. Saturday will feature outdoor fair areas with chuck wagon hamburgers and hot dogs, ice-cream, fried dough and live music, as well as the indoor white elephant, books, and baked goods. There will be no luncheon this year.

Highlights of this year’s event include water-based games for children (slip ’n’ slide, a bubbles station, water balloons, and a misting room) in the courtyard, as well as an inflatable

obstacle course on the upper parking lot. There also will be a sale of used bikes at low, low prices.

Get In Shape at Gunstock Inn Fitness & Swim

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Whether you love to swim, to cycle, to walk or run for miles on a treadmill, or lift weights, the Gunstock Inn has it all for you.

The inn has undergone renovations under new ownership in the past year and there is a lot going on, from a great new restaurant called Schuster’s Tavern to an upgraded gymnasium with all the latest equipment, as well as a variety of aquatic and aerobic classes to help the Lakes Region get fit.

Says Megan Buckner, marketing director of the Gunstock Inn & Resort, “Les and Linda Schuster, the new owners, purchased the property in December of 2013. They have put a lot of effort into upgrading the facility and they were ready to rent inn guest rooms

by January.”

Megan goes on to say that the owners set their sights on redoing the gym to make it more accessible and to offer more classes and features for the public. The men’s and women’s locker rooms have been revamped and the layout of the entire gym area has been redone. The results are a gym that has it all, from an Olympic saltwater pool to a fitness center with new equipment and a salon and spa that will be opening in the future. A graphically pleasing logo in bright yellow brands Gunstock Fitness & Swim with a clean, recognizable design.

Michael McLean, gym attendant for the GI (Gunstock Inn) Fitness & Swim center, adds, “We have really good

equipment, including weight machines that work on a person’s abs, core, and other areas of the body for total fitness.”

It doesn’t take much prodding for Michael to demonstrate how each piece of equipment in the roomy gym benefits members. There is something for everyone, from basic weight-lifting to a vertical chest press and much, much more.

“We also have a sitting leg press, an overhead press, a cable machine with attachments, a standing rowing machine, and a free weight area with benches and weights weighing between five and 90 pounds,” he says.

The gym also offers treadmills with headphones so those working out can enjoy the flat screen TVs mounted on a wall without disturbing others.

Clearly the aerobic room is Michael’s favorite area, and it is here that he teaches cycling classes and where kickboxing is offered. “We have eight bikes for cycling, medicine balls, and lots of kickboxing equipment. It is a low-intimidation gym and all are welcome.”

Throughout the gym, the floors are easy on the feet, made of rubberized composite that will stand up to heavy weights being dropped and yet softens steps for gym members. The wall colors are a bright, sunny yellow and make a person feel very welcome, no matter the time of day or year.

The pool has long been a favorite of Gunstock Inn guests and Lakes Regioners. Many people have enjoyed

water aerobic classes and swim lessons in the giant pool over the years, and those people will delight in the buoyant, 80-degree (approximate temperature), four-lane saltwater pool.

“We have put a lot of work into the pool,” says Megan. “We installed two geothermal units to contain and recycle heat and humidity.”

The benefits of the salt water pool are many, and they include greater buoyancy. “The upkeep is easy and it is gentler on the joints of those who swim in the pool,” she continues. “It is also easier on the skin.”

The facility offers a variety of membership options. Twelve-month swim membership is available, as well as fitness-only memberships and combined pool-and-fitness memberships. Memberships come in silver, gold, and platinum with various fee structures.

Silver memberships give participants access to the facility during scheduled operating hours and include basic classes, such as morning stretch and general warm-up classes.

Gold memberships include the benefits of a Silver membership plus up to two Premium Classes a week (yoga, Zumba, spinning, kickboxing, dance, etc.).

Platinum membership includes Silver membership benefits plus unlimited access to all classes. Platinum members may bring up to six guests per month and receive a credit equivalent to the first-month membership for all of

their guests that sign up for an annual membership.

Day passes for the pool and fitness center also are available. Club hours are Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Michael said the Aqua Zumba classes are very popular, with participants of all ages working out and having fun.

Pool yoga is another favorite class.

After working out and/or swimming at the GI Fitness and Swim area, head to Schuster’s Tavern for a great lunch or dinner. In the bright and airy dining room, a huge welcoming fireplace offers a spot for guests to gather before or after a meal and is especially welcome in the winter months.

“The Tavern serves American steakhouse fare and we feature ‘Schuster’s Cut’, the largest steak in the Lakes Region!” Megan says. “We also offer salads, appetizers, flatbread pizzas, burgers and sandwiches, and more. The Tavern is open seven days a week.”

A conference area will offer a private spot for parties and meetings. Small weddings are offered at the Inn as well.

Inn guest rooms are decorated with fine antiques and each has its own unique décor. Some rooms overlook the mountains and surrounding valley area and offer some of the best views in the Lakes Region.

An Evening With Anne Frank Poet To Attend The Wright Museum will hold its eighth session of “Tuesday Night at The Wright 2014 Summer Educational Programming” on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. with Tom White’s presentation, “Anne Frank: An Indestructible Voice”.

Tom will frame Anne Frank’s voice and experiences within the historical context of her life with special attention to the life of Otto Frank and the memories of Hannah (Goslar) Pick, Anne’s childhood friend. Tom also will trace the Frank family’s history after its betrayal in the Secret Annex.

Tom White is the coordinator of Educational Outreach for the Cohen Center for Holocaust Studies at Keene

State College. He served on the Diocese of Manchester’s Diocesan Ecumenical Commission for Interfaith Relations and is co-chair of the Cohen Center’s annual Kristallnacht Remembrance.

He serves on the board of directors of the Association of Holocaust Organizations and received NEA New Hampshire’s Champion of Human and Civil Rights Award in 2009.

The Barnstormers To Present Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap The longest-running show on the planet, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, will come to the Barnstormers Theatre on Aug. 19 23.

Trapped by a snowstorm (sound familiar?), houseguests are horrified to learn that one of them is a killer, and suspicions abound.

Program On USS Constitution

The Trio That Brought Folk Music Into The Mainstream The Flying Monkey Performance Center in Plymouth will welcome the Kingston Trio back to its stage on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 7:30 p.m.

The trio has been a part of the American music fabric for more than 50 years, bringing folk into the mainstream with hits like “Tom Dooley”. Its musicians have received two Grammy Awards and the trio has been named to the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2011, the Kingston Trio won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Kingston Trio emerged from San Francisco’s North Beach club scene in 1957, taking the country by storm, bringing the rich tradition of American folk music into the mainstream for the first time. In that first year, with six notes rolling melodically off a banjo and the spoken words of “Throughout history, there have been many songs written about the eternal triangle.

This next one tells the story of a Mr. Grayson, a beautiful woman, and a condemned man named Tom Dooley.”

With their smooth, three-part harmonies, collegiate appeal, and trademark striped shirts, the Kingston Trio single-handedly revolutionized folk and pop music in America with other hits, such as “Scotch and Soda”, “Hard, Ain’t It Hard”, and “Tijuana Jail”.

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Trio enjoyed unprecedented record sales and worldwide fame while influencing the musical tastes of a generation.

Through changing times, the Trio has played on, remaining popular for its great songs that sound as good today as the first time you heard them. Fifty-four years after “Tom Dooley” shot to the top of the charts, the Trio remains on the road 30 weeks a year, bringing back all the great memories and making new ones.

Brad Wolff will present a free program, “The USS Constitution: All Hands on Deck!” on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. The program, sponsored by the Ashland Historical Society, will take place at the Ashland Railroad Station Museum at 69 Depot Street.

Brad’s program will cover the construction, service record, and history of the USS Constitution, America’s oldest commissioned naval

vessel. Brad, the recently retired social studies teacher at the Ashland schools, participated in the 2013 summer seminar on the ship, presented in Boston by the National Endowment of the Humanities.

Waterville Valley Schedules ‘Brew Races’ Waterville Valley Resort will hold its inaugural Craft Brew Races on Saturday, Aug. 23, beginning at 11 a.m. The new event features a 5-K road race, followed by a local craft beer festival in which runners will be able to sample from more than 20

breweries.

Waterville Valley will be the host for the New Hampshire leg of the series which has races scheduled throughout New England this summer.

Squam Lake Paddle Visits LRCT’s Butterworth and Jimmy Point Preserves The Lakes Region Conservation Trust will lead a paddle trip to two conserved properties on Squam Lake: the Butterworth Preserve, a 33.5acre property that includes 3,000 feet of shoreline, and the Jimmy Point Preserve, a 6.3-acre property that includes 1,850 feet of shoreline and two small islands. The lead guide for the trip on Tuesday, Aug. 19, is John Oliver, an advisor who will share his extensive knowledge of the LRCT’s conserved lands, wildlife, and history.

The trip will begin at 8 a.m.

Participants will be able to choose between a shorter paddle to the Butterworth Preserve and back (one

and a half to two miles, round-trip, returning at approximately 11 a.m.) or a longer trip that continues to Jimmy Point and back (approximately four miles round-trip, returning at approximately 1:30 p.m.). Participants will share lunch at a stopping point along the route and there will be opportunities for swimming in a few spots along the way.

Enjoying her 27th year as Wolfeboro’s ambassador, Molly — the look-a-like of a 19th century trolley car (without any electric wires or rails) — takes her passengers on a 45-minute ride along the shores of three lakes: Winnipesaukee, Wentworth, and Crescent. It also passes some of the town’s loveliest homes, allowing passengers to experience the town’s pristine outdoor environment.

Molly’s riders will see sandy beaches, hiking and biking paths, kayaking, canoeing, stand-uppaddleboard, boat rentals and sales, and parks with playgrounds, tennis courts, picnic tables, flowers, bronze statues, and bandstands.
