Changing of the Guard at Proctor’s Lakehouse Cottages

he was interested in managing the business, instead of having them hire someone outside the family. While Gladys initially was unsure if she was ready for such a drastic life change (the couple has resided in Massachusetts where Patrick had a full-time career as a sales manager), she came to the conclusion that the move was right for their family. With three young children (Charlie, William, and Monica) who love spending time with grandparents Fred and Maureen at Weirs Beach, Gladys and Patrick knew the time was right to step in and take over the running of Proctor’s Lakehouse Cottages. “I didn’t want Patrick to look back

15 or 20 years from now and regret not doing this,” Gladys said. “It is his dream to run Proctor’s.” “My job in Massachusetts was great but it was not so good that it stopped me from making the decision to take over the management of Proctor’s,”

Patrick commented. Because Patrick was in college when his parents bought Proctor’s, he watched the busy lifestyle they led and had some idea of the amount of work — and the rewards — of running the seasonal business. But there was a lot he did not know how to do and he is now learning the ropes from his father. Fred is there to help in many aspects as Patrick takes over the day-to-day operation of Proctor’s. “My plan,” Patrick said with a grin, “is to totally do whatever my Dad says for one year so I can learn everything. Then I will step in with my own ideas.” For those who love Proctor’s just the way it is, there is no need to worry. Fred and Maureen are still the owners of Proctor’s and their son and daughter-in-law will act as employees and run the business. Guests will get the best of all worlds: continued ownership by the elder Clausens and on-site management by the younger

Story and Photo by Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Things have changed a lot at Proctor’s Lakehouse Cottages in Weirs Beach … and yet, they have stayed the same. In a gentle changing of the guard, the vacation spot (where families come back year-after-year to rent family suites or cottages for a week or longer) will now be managed by Patrick and Gladys Clausen. The couple is the son and daughter-in-law of longtime Proctor’s owners Fred and Maureen Clausen. Last year, Fred and Maureen decided to put the business on the market but it was not a decision they came to without much consideration. The original plan was to sell the lakefront property for potential condominium conversion; thus the listing price was higher. “If it had not sold by this summer, we had made the decision to hire a manager to run Proctor’s,” said Fred. He explained that the physical work of running a 24/7 seasonal business was very taxing and he and Maureen have done it for many years. Although they had other projects and a chance to “just relax” on the horizon, the couple wanted to make sure their beloved Proctor’s was in good hands before stepping back. Enter Patrick and Gladys who had spent many wonderful summers at the lakeside business visiting Patrick’s parents and enjoying the area. Patrick approached his parents and told them

• Proctor’s Continued from page 3 generation of the family. Patrick and Gladys know many of the customers and families who return to Proctor’s each year and they are sensitive to what those guests want, as Fred and Maureen always have been. According to Fred, the younger couple will bring new ideas and strengths to the business, such as a solid knowledge of social media, marketing, and methods to upgrade computer systems. He jokingly said that the younger generation has a much better grasp of not only social media on the Internet, but also the ever-changing uses of cell phones. Patrick already enjoys the variety of duties he experiences on any given day at Proctor’s. “I like it that I will do manual labor in the morning, such as planting flowers, and then I may be doing office work right after that

in the afternoon. There is never a dull moment!” he said. With 12 cottages and eight family suites, the new managers will be busy. Patrick and Gladys will be making changes slowly. “We will have a green [environmentally friendly] emphasis,” Gladys said. “We are putting in rain barrels and we will be growing vegetables that we will make available to our guests.” As their parents did before them, Patrick and Gladys will be splitting their time between their home in Massachusetts and their seasonal job at Proctor’s. When the business winds down at season’s end and everything is closed up tightly for the winter, the couple will return to Massachusetts until next spring. “We love the town we live in; it’s a great community,” Gladys added. With children, ages five, three, and one, it makes sense to spend the school year at their Massachusetts home.

School will soon be on the horizon and the children will enjoy the best of both worlds: going to school with their friends in the fall, winter, and spring; and spending wonderful summers at Weirs Beach. Gladys certainly will have a busy schedule, helping with marketing and management of Proctor’s as time permits, but also being a full-time mother of three. “Our first priority is for her to be there for the kids,” Patrick said. Gladys smiled as she added that she also is a flamenco dancer and has performed with her family in the past. “We will be here to do whatever is necessary to help them run the business,” said Maureen. “That might be babysitting or checking guests in or making beds; we will help them as much as they want or need.” Although Patrick and Gladys will be running Proctor’s, they are quick to add that Patrick’s sister and her husband are part of the overall plan as well. they hold jobs elsewhere, their input is valuable. Both Clausen children were married at Proctor’s and it continues to be a big part of their lives. This year, guests at Proctor’s will be treated to some upgrades, including flat-screen, digital televisions in all units. The property is kept immaculate thanks to the hard work of all the Clausens and two long-time employees. “We will be looking for one more housekeeping staff member for the season,” added Patrick. When guests check in this summer, they will see familiar faces because Patrick and Gladys have always been around for visits and Fred and Maureen will also be around a lot. But it is the younger generation that will be running things with the support of Fred and Maureen. So, while things have changed at Proctor’s, like all successfully run businesses, a lot that is wonderful will remain the same.

Plymouth Returns to Roots Music The Del McCoury Band will bring its fusion of traditional and progressive bluegrass to Plymouth’s Flying Monkey Performance Center on Thursday, July 17, at 7:30 p.m. The most awarded bluegrass musician of all time, Del was inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame at the “The Mother of Country Music” — the Ryman Auditorium — in 2011. He has multiple Grammy wins, along with a total of 31 International Bluegrass Music Association Awards, including Entertainer of the Year nine times. Del serves as a living link to the days when

bluegrass was made only in hillbilly honkytonks, schoolhouse shows, and on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry; yet he also is a vital presence today as the torchbearer for the entire sweep of Bluegrass and its history. “Del is steeped in tradition,” said Flying Monkey Marketing Director Seth McNally. “But his willingness to expand the genre in exciting directions has set him apart, breathing life into the string revival going on with younger fans.” Tickets are on sale at 603-536-2551 or visit www.flyingmonkeynh.com.

NickFest Offers Fun For the Whole Family By Sarah Wright Come one, come all to the eighth annual NickFest in Wolfeboro on Saturday, July 19. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (rain date: Sunday, July 20), enjoy rides, food, and live music, along with lots of other entertainment at Memorial Field, on the Brewster Academy Campus. The fun and excitement has been extended an hour this year to provide the best value for families. The festival has grown each year and, for 2014, the entertainment selection will feature fun inflatables like the Wrecking Ball, the Möbius Combo, Vertical Rush, four-way bungee trampolines, and a castle bounce house, along with other activities such as a climbing wall, dunk tank, jumbo slide, bag toss, horse and pony rides, a photo booth, petting zoo, and face-painting. Holly Williams, the managing director of the Nicholas J. Pernokas Recreation Park — “The Nick” — says that the four-way bungee trampolines were the big favorite last year and loads of fun. There are also more food options in the works for this year’s Nick Fest. Not only can patrons get hot dogs, hamburgers, and Italian sausage; but also some homemade macaroni and

cheese and gourmet fair food options from a new vendor. Kettle corn and other snacks will be available as well. While enjoying the food, take in some tunes performed by local favorite Casual Labor. The band plays music from different genres and will include a mix of classic songs as well as newer hits, so there will be something for everyone. The Nicholas J. Pernokas Recreation Park is located at 10 Trotting Track Road, off Center Street, and it’s important to note that “The Nick” does not receive any tax dollars. Instead, the organization depends on fees, fundraising efforts (like NickFest), and donations to sustain the recreation park as an important community resource. One hundred percent of the money collected from NickFest will go to the park, to make improvements like the recent addition of a water fountain for dogs which was installed behind the concession building. Next on the list for The Nick is resurfacing the parking lot with recycled asphalt to make it easier for young children and handicapped patrons to visit the park. Also, plans are in the works to add eight dugouts to the little league and softball fields. Forty-five local businesses are sponsoring NickFest. Holly says, “It’s so important for people to shop locally and support community businesses. It’s these businesses who in turn support The Nick.” Children two and under are admitted

to NickFest at no charge. For further information about The Nick or NickFest, call 603-569-1909 or visit www.thenick.org.

The Wolfeboro Community Bandstand goes country on Saturday, July 19 with the Country Mile Band presented by the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand summer concert series. The Country Mile Band has gained a solid reputation as New England’s premier country music, dance, party and show band. The members are driven by their passion for country music and that intensity shows up every time the band steps on stage. The performance is the third concert in the series, which takes place every Saturday in July and August, weather permitting. The concerts start at 7 p.m. in the Wolfeboro Community Band-

stand, which is located in Cate Park on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in downtown Wolfeboro. The concerts are free and open to the public, though a “pass-the-hat” offering is taken at intermission to support the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand’s attempts to bring quality free concerts to the bandstand each summer. (The bandstand underwent a partial renovation prior to the start of this year’s concert series, with a new floor and railings installed just in time for the 20th season of Saturday night concerts to commence.) In the case of bad weather there will be a sign posted at the entrance to the park near the town docks.

Stencil Heaven an Online Paradise By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Fred McAllister grew up surrounded by country décor, scented candles, and stenciling. His mother ran a gift shop in the busy NH Highway Hotel in Concord and Fred remembers the business very well. Her shop featured all things country, and the popular style of the time relied on stencils for decorative wall borders and patterns for furniture. “My mother was hand-cutting stencils at a time when stenciling homes was becoming popular,” Fred recalls. She had about 120 stencils in her collection, all her own designs. It took a lot of time to cut the stencils by hand, which would then be sold in the shop to dedicated customers. In 1994, after getting a degree in business, Fred wanted to find something unique that would use his interest in manufacturing and business. He asked his mother for permission to find automated equipment to cut her stencils in a faster method and with greater consistency. Once he found the machinery and method to cut the stencils in an automated manner so they could be produced quickly and efficiently, Fred opened a mail order stencil business. This was the early 1990s, before the broad advent of the Internet. To market the stencils, the business used catalogs and mail order. It grew quickly with limited online sales at the begin-

ning but once the Internet took hold, the entire world could shop at Stencils Online; today the business has about 20,000 customers. With a business office and workshop for stencil design in Franklin, Stencils Online creates and sells just about any kind of stencil a customer could want or need. Projects range from custom work to small stencils for painting a border on a wall. “We used to sell a lot of wall stencils,” says Fred, “but overall wall patterns that mimic wallpaper are popular right now. Customers like the damask wallpaper look they can get with some of our stencils.”

Also popular with customers are patterned stencils in geometric shapes, and bamboo and tree stencils for home décor. “We have thousands of stencils that people can order online,” says Fred. When asked if stenciling is difficult, Fred explains that it is easy to learn to stencil a wall or other surface, which only increases the popularity of stenciling. Although Stencils Online does not have a store or showroom, it offers a huge variety of stencils via the company’s website. They sell stenciling supplies as well, offering a variety of brushes and stencil paints. In addition, they offer blank Mylar for creative

types who wish to design their own stencils. With such a huge variety of stencils in stock, one might wonder who designs the stencil patterns, which range from a small border in a country style to stencils to fit an entire wall or beautiful calligraphic letter stencils or business logo stencils … and even body art stencils. Fred explains that he works with a large list of artists around the world that design for Stencils Online. This offers customers the huge variety of stencils. To keep the artists fresh and up-to-date on the latest in the industry, Fred sends them to stencil shows all over the world. Body art has become very popular and offers a whole new arena for stencils. Some of the world’s best body artists (stenciling intricate designs on the human body) attend the World Body Art Festival each year and Fred ensures that Stencils Online has a presence at the week-long awards show that takes place in Austria. Andrea O’Donnell is an internationally known body paint artist with her own line of stencils that offer multitasking tools for body painters. Her line of body art stencils is available via Stencils Online and Fred speaks highly of her artwork.

July 14, 2014 before tackling an entire wall or other project. The stencils are made from a very durable, flexible, seven-mil plastic Mylar that is strong enough to use many times, yet thin enough to achieve remarkable detail. Via an online gallery, customers can view the endless possibilities in Do It Yourself/Crafts, Home Décor and Body Painting. Whatever projects a person can dream up, it can be stenciled. Stencils are online for pillow designs, lampshade stencils, floors, stencils to create cloth placemats, and stencils for decorating furniture, to name but a few of the possibilities. In order to keep up with stencil orders, Fred works with a group of skilled employees. “Half the staff does customer service, stencil graphics, and or-

•Stencil Continued from page 11 When shopping online, the variety and choices are almost overwhelming. In the home wall stencil area, patterns fit any décor, from art deco to primitive to modern. All-over repeat stencils can help a customer create a pattern for an entire wall. Frames, ribbons, and borders offer a way to add a bit of flair to just a section of wall. “Stenciling offers people a less expensive way to decorate a wall or a room,” says Fred. “It is a good alternative and people like the fact that it is customizable and easy to do.” Fred suggests that beginning stencil customers practice with their chosen stencil on a piece of paper or board

der processing, and the other half does manufacturing and shipping. Summer is our busiest time of the year because lots of people do home decorating projects during summer and into fall.” Recently, Stencils Online was busy with a large order of temporary body tattoos for the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards television program, attesting to the variety of jobs the company undertakes. In-house stencil-cutting equipment ensures that all stencils are cut to the correct specifications. A group of trained employees works together on state-of-the-art equipment to cut precise stencils for each customer, whether for a simple order or a large job. Times and tastes have changed since Fred’s mother ran the gift shop at the NH Highway Hotel many years ago and designed and cut stencils. People these days are less attracted to Early American décor or stenciling. “I haven’t sold a pineapple stencil in ages!” laughs Fred, referring to the Early American fruit that symbolizes hospitality. Rather, customers are interested

in stencils that give the damask wall cover look or other overall patterns. However, the good news is that people are still using stencils to create the look they want for any number of home decorating projects. “My mother is amazed at how the business has grown,” Fred adds. Indeed, the original 120 stencils his mother patiently cut to please her customers at the start of the family’s stenciling business has grown to include thousands of patterns created by artists all around the world. Although Fred McAllister has taken a small stenciling business to much bigger heights, he speaks fondly of growing up with a creative mother who ran a successful business. Those who want to find stencils for any project, from industrial lettering to creating a patterned wall design for their home, can find it all on the Web at Stencils Online. View the many stencil patterns and choices at www.stencilsonline.com.

New England Farm House Architecture in Effingham Have you ever wondered why that old farm house on your road looks the way it does? Why does it have distinct sections or why does it not? Was it a way of shielding the occupants from the elements of harsh New England winters? Learn the answers to these and other questions about New England farm houses and their architecture during a presentation at the Effingham Historical Society on Friday, July 18 at 7 p.m. by Thomas Hubka, author of Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn: The Connected Farm Buildings of New England. In addition to Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn,

which has become a standard work on the topic of regional farmsteads in America, Hubka is also the author of Resplendent Synagogue: Architecture and Worship in an 18th Century Polish Community (for which he won the 2004 Orbis Book Prize for Polish Studies, Honorable Mention) and Houses without Names: Architectural Nomenclature and the Classification of America’s Common Houses. His research is primarily focused on interpretation of the development and relationships between buildings and their architecture and people and their culture. The program, which is made pos-

A Look Back in Time: History and Images of Ossipee Mountain Park aker.com www.thel On Tuesday, July 15 the Lakes Region Conservation Trust welcomes Dr. David M. Leuser of Plymouth State University for an illustrated lecture titled A Look Back in Time: History and Images of Ossipee Mountain Park. Before Tom Plant built his famous Lucknow mansion (now called Castle in the Clouds) at the top of Lee Mountain, B.F. Shaw constructed his own estate on the level plateau just below that peak. Shaw developed a natural park in the surrounding area which became a wellknown late 19th and early 20th century tourist destination. Shaw constructed bridges over the beautiful waterfalls and made many lookout points to allow people to take in the natural beauty of Lake Winnipesaukee. Dr. Leuser is a collector of White Mountain tourist memorabilia from the 19th century, and he has a strong interest in the history of the Castle in the Clouds property. He has researched Ossipee Mountain Park for a forthcoming book on the subject. Dr.

Volunteers will guide the walking tour of the Lee Settlement and Brook Walk from 10:30am to 12 noon. All LRCT programs at the Castle in the Clouds are accessed via Ossipee Park Road (not the Castle’s main entrance road). Preregistration is required for the walking tour, and participation is limited to 25 people. Pre-register at lrct@lrct.org or call 603-253-3301.

Walking Tour of Gilmanton Forefathers in Smith Meetinghouse Cemetery A number of people important in Gilmanton’s history found their final resting place at Smith Meetinghouse Cemetery. On Tuesday, July 22 at 6 p.m., Gilmanton Historical Society members will lead a tour of the cemetery, discussing the backgrounds of significant people buried there. If attending, please be sure to wear good walking shoes. Refreshments will be served after the tour. Smith Meetinghouse Cemetery is located next to the Smith Meeting House complex on Meetinghouse Road, off NH Route 140 north of Gilmanton Iron Works. The Society’s summer series is presented on the fourth Tuesday of each month from May through

September. The schedule is as follows: Pat Clarke presents a program on Herman Mudgett, Gilmanton’s most notorious resident, on August 26. The final program is on September 23 and focuses on the textile workers of the Amoskeag Company. For details, pick up a brochure at the Gilmanton Town Office and review the Society’s exhibit on the history of Town Reports in the display cases. Or check the Society’s website, www. historicalsocietiesnh.org/gilmanton. (There is a link on the Town website.) The Gilmanton Historical Society offers a number of publications on the history of the Town. They are available at all Society programs, at the Town Clerk’s Office and at the Brick House

in Gilmanton Corners. The Society’s Museum, located at the Old Town Hall, is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. until

noon, and at 7 p.m. before each of the regular summer programs.

A walking tour of Smith Meetinghouse Cemetery is offered by the Gilmanton Historical Society on Tuesday, July 22, beginning at 6 p.m. All are welcome.

Piper’s Pet and House Sitting Services Offers Peace of Mind By Sarah Wright Having a pet is a wonderful experience that brings with it companionship and unconditional love. But along with that comes responsibility; finding someone to take care of Fido or Fluffy while you’re away can be a daunting prospect. Well, stress no more, because Marcia Piper makes it her business to care for your pet as only an animal-lover can. She’ll even bring her camera and take your pet’s “portrait” for you. It sounds like a dream job to me, so I decided to ask Marcia how she got so lucky. How did you get into the pet-sitting business and how long have you been doing it? Initially, I started pet-sitting for friends when I lived in North Carolina. We would barter services; they helped me with my pets when I went out of town and I’d help them with theirs. When I moved back home to Wolfeboro in the summer of 2011, I was asked if I could look after a friend’s animals while they went out of town. I was job searching at the time, not locked into anything yet, so I said “yes” and then, a few weeks later, someone else asked if I could stay at their house with their cats. Then another old friend living in Laconia asked me. That’s when I realized I would need to charge something to cover gasoline for my truck. I decided to make a flyer advertising Pet & House Sitting in the Wolfeboro area. I designed it on my computer, printed some out, and put them up on

I got a couple of calls over the next few months, but I officially started my business in January 2013, when a friend recommended making a FaceBook page. Once I did that, there was no turning back! I knew from the interest and feedback I received that there could be a truly viable business developing. I created some business cards and put them up around town. I walked the “Rail Trails” regularly in Wolfeboro, too, so I would fill my pockets with cards (as lots of people walk their dogs there), and hit the trails. More positive

their pets is what I feel works best for everyone. I am able to care for lots of different animals: dogs, cats, birds, fish, mice, snakes, goats, pigs, horses, whatever you have — “all creatures great and small.” I offer single hourly visits, blocks of hours, or overnights; whatever fits your pet’s needs best. I will set up a “Meet & Greet” for your pets ahead of time to discuss details and let them “inspect” me to make sure they are comfortable with me. I will feed, walk, play, brush, give medications, and most of all, lots of love! I currently serve the Wolfeboro, Tuftonboro, and Melvin Village areas, but other areas may be possible, depending on my schedule. You never know, so feel free to inquire. Tell me about puppy play dates. “Puppy Play Dates” is a service mainly provided for socialization purposes. For example, a new puppy living in a home with no other animals, or a Senior dog that is lonely and needs conMarcia Piper tact with other animals or peo-

feedback! Then I had some banners made and drove my truck in the Fourth of July parade and handed out cards there, too. What pets can you care for and what areas do you cover? I do not operate a kennel at my home. The convenience of going directly to a person’s house to care for

Play dates are done in two- to three-hour blocks. What other general services do you provide? Besides pet-sitting, Piper’s can also water your house plants and garden, pick up your mail, etc.; whatever you might need. What do you like best about the job? matter what kind they are! Caring for them allows me to give and receive unconditional love, keeping me and your pets grounded and happy, while leaving pet owners with the ultimate “peace of mind,” so they can relax when they go away. Yesteryear Old Time Lake Fun and Facts By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper

Many famous people have come to the Lakes Region for a week’s stay. Many loved it so much they stayed on. Such was the case of the Nicolay family of the Squam Lake area. John George Nicolay was the personal secretary to President Lincoln and Marshall of the Supreme Court. He also was a prolific writer and according to A Little History of the Squam Lakes, he penned a 10-volume set titled Life of Lincoln. Nicolay’s daughter, Helen, was a Lakes Region summer resident for 60 years. She resided at a cottage on Shephard Hill in the Holderness area. Her cottage was built in the 1890s and it had a beautiful view of Red Hill. Perhaps the view inspired Helen to start painting; she painted and drew and photographed the area and was known as a skilled artist. Helen also wrote over 20 biographies. Another famous person who visited the Lakes Region and loved it enough to move to the area permanently was actor Claude Raines. Most people remember Raines as the unlikely • Yesteryear Continued on page 34

The Lakes Region has drawn vacationers to its beautiful shores for decades. While tourists enjoy the days sunbathing and boating, they may be unaware that the area is full of interesting, sometimes hidden facts and tales. Just a few old-time lake facts follow. If you vacationed in the Sandwich, NH area in the 1890s, you had to be prepared to rough it a bit more than if you were vacationing in a big-city hotel. For those who were in Sandwich at that time, Alphonso Smith was the go-to guy. He owned the first mechanical boat (it could have been steam driven) and he operated from Chalmer’s Point in Sandwich. According to A Little History of the Squam Lakes by Catherine Hartshorn Campbell, Smith was fondly dubbed Phon and he was sought after for his ability to deliver ice and milk (he had an ice house) to summer residents. He also serviced the town of Center Sandwich. Phon was very busy, with his boats delivering goods to and from nearby Ashland.

Lake Discover Camp to Provide Fun for Kids The New Hampshire Boat Museum in Wolfeboro is offering a series of fun-filled camp weeks for children. The hands-on, fun adventures will help children discover how the lakes, rivers and streams of Wolfeboro connect the past with the future. Campers will participate in crafts, games and experiments designed to instill an appreciation for the abundant local freshwater resources. Students will create a model birch bark canoe and a fairy boat. Kids can run off their energy with boatingthemed relay games like Captain Says, Town Docks and Water Safety. A Lake Winnipesaukee Story Walk will be featured and crafty kids will have plenty of hands-on fun. Science enthusiasts will enjoy discovering plants and animals living in the lakes and wetlands. Highlights include one special offsite visit for each session. Younger students will visit Back Bay with the Back Bay Skippers to learn how to sail model sailboats. Older students will ride on the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s Millie B, followed by a tour with the captain of the docked Winnipesaukee Belle. To conclude the

adventure, campers will eat a bag lunch onboard the Winni Belle overlooking the Town Docks. The cost to attend is $15 per day for members’ children or grandchildren and $18 per day for not-yet-members’ children and grandchildren. To help keep activities age-specific, the camp is divided into sessions. To immediately protect your lawn and reduce summer browning: Apply liquid compost tea to improve soil health Apply a slow release fertilizer with grub and/or tick protection • Mow high – at least 3"– and mulch your clippings to minimize browning • Don’t mow in the heat of the day • Keep your mower blades sharp • •

acquaintance of Humphrey Bogart in the wildly popular movie Casablanca. Raines discovered the Lakes Region when a doctor friend who owned a home in the Lakes Region invited the actor to visit. According to an article in a 2013 issue of The Laker titled Celebrities in Our Midst: Claude Raines by Thomas P. Caldwell, Raines and his wife liked the area and moved into a large home in Sandwich in the 1960s. He was quite an arresting figure, dressed often, it is said, in a dramatic looking cape. By the late 1960s, Raines passed away and is buried in a small cemetery on Bean Road. Long forgotten silent movie stars and stage actors were once the thrill of everyone from farm hands in rural locations to city moviegoers. One such popular silent actor was Pedro de Cordoba Jr. It is unknown how or why de Cordoba made his way to the Lakes Region, but from 1903 to 1905, he stayed at a Squam Lakes cottage known as High Haith. According to A Little History of Squam, he directed plays at the site for entertainment of the cottage owners. He brought with him various theatre friends, which meant that a full cast for his plays was easy to assemble. A charming little lighthouse on Newfound Lake has stood as an icon of the area for many years. According to local resident David Powden, his great grandfather Walter Braley was asked by a cottage owner to construct

a lighthouse near the water. Made of stone with a metal top, the lighthouse had a light inside and while probably not used for boat navigation, it was a unique conversation piece. Braley also built a fireplace and chimney for the cottage. The lighthouse still stands today and makes a wonderful and unusual piece of architecture enjoyed by locals and summer vacationers. There is nothing so inspiring as attending a church service near nature, whether on the shores of the lake or on an island. An unusual church service location exists in the Lakes Region to this day and offes vacationers and others sa memorable option for worship. Bear Island is one of Winnipesaukee’s larger islands, and has a good-sized summer population. The Bear Island Association some years ago published a book called Bear Island Reflections that chronicles the history of the people and homes upon the island. The island is home to a beautiful church called St. John’s Churchon-the-Lake. It is the site of weekly summer services with a series of guest preachers. However, there was not always a church on the island and early vacationers rowed to attend Sunday services on Meredith Neck. Islanders, however, wanted a solid place of worship, and set about constructing something permanent on Bear Island. According to Bear Island Reflections, • Yesteryear Continued on page 38

The Lord’s Hill Meeting House (LHMH) offers a 2014 summer concert series to benefit the Meeting House Restoration Fund. During July, August and September, the Meeting House will host a band or musical group on Friday evenings at 7 p.m. On July 18 at 7 p.m., Pat O’Brien will perform a concert of original pieces that reflect a musical tour of Ireland. Pat’s music is a combination of traditional Irish and American folk stories. Pat is a singer/songwriter who plays guitar, banjo and tin whistle. The remainder of the concert series will offer a variety of musical genres. On August 22, Puckabrush brings an evening of Celtic and traditional music and on September 19 local cellist Laurie Meeder and her friends will present a program of pieces selected especially for the concert. Tickets for the concert series, which

is sponsored in part by Brooks Motor Sales in Center Ossipee, are available for purchase at Boyle’s Family Market in Effingham Falls, at Ye Olde Sale Shoppe in South Effingham (Taylor City) and at Country Goods and Groceries in East Wakefield. All concerts will be held rain or shine at the Lord’s Hill Meeting House on Province Lake Road (Route 153 South) at Lord’s Hill in Effingham. Tickets are priced at $8 in advance or $10 at the door. Proceeds help the LHMH with their ongoing efforts to maintain and restore the historic 1798 building, along with its parade green, bandstand, and Veteran’s Honor Roll. For more information on this or future concerts contact Erik Jones 603539-4071 or email lordshillmeetinghouse@gmail.com.

Mystery Book Discussion at Wolfeboro Public Library Those who love reading mysteries and enjoy getting together with others who are devoted to the genre may want to join the It’s A Mystery book discussion group at the Wolfeboro Public Library. New members are always welcome and there is no commitment to attend every semi-monthly meeting. In order to join in, simply read the selected book and then show up for the discussion. The next gathering will be Friday, July 25, at 10:30 a.m. with the chosen book being The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley, published in 2009. It is the first book in a series that features the wickedly funny Flavia De Luce. Flavia, an amateur sleuth and aspiring chemist, is one of the most engaging heroines to emerge in recent literature. She lives with her family at

Buckshaw, a decaying mansion in the English countryside of the 1950s, and conducts her investigations in a rather scientific way. Louise Penny, a well-known mystery writer, said, “Alan Bradley’s marvelous book, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie, is a fantastic read, a winner. Flavia walks right off the page and follows me through my day. I can hardly wait for the next book. Bravo!” Pick up a copy of the book at Wolfeboro Public Library which is open Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library will serve refreshments at the discussion get-together.
