Land & Lake Poker Run To Benefit Easter Seals NH Easter Seals NH’s Land and Lake Poker Run provides a great day on the lake while benefitting a great cause.

The event, taking place on Saturday, July 19, encourages people to take their favorite mode of transportation — boat, personal watercraft, car, truck, or motorcycle — and make a circuit of Lake Wi n n i p e s a u k e e for a chance at more than $20,000 in prizes and giveaways.

Participants will cruise to four checkpoints around the lake to obtain a poker hand. At each checkpoint, they will receive a sealed envelope with a playing card inside.

They then will head to the Naswa Resort & Beach Bar to get the final card to complete the poker hand.

Enjoy A Visit To The Loon Center

Randall Living just a half a mile from the shores of Little Squam Lake, I look forward every spring to the anticipated arrival of our resident loons whose striking, black-and-white coloring, admirable swimming and diving abilities, and distinctive calls make them enjoyable to watch and hear. It’s even more fun later in the summer when the loons have their chicks with them, who are often seen riding on their parents’ backs.

But I have to admit, I have been disappointed the past few years, as I’ve noticed fewer and fewer loons swimming on the lake, with or without chicks; so after this year’s particularly long, cold winter and unpredictable spring, I was pleasantly surprised to spot a pair of loons swimming near the Ashland town beach in mid-May. To find out if there has been a decline

in the number of loons calling Squam Lake home or if it’s just been a case of bad timing and bad luck on my part, I decided to look for answers at one of my favorite places in the Lakes Region, the Loon Center and Markus Wildlife Sanctuary in Moultonborough.

The Loon Center and Markus Wildlife Sanctuary is situated along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee on Lee’s Mills Road on 200 acres of land donated in the early 1990s by summer resident Frederick Markus in memory of his wife, Paula. The center is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily during the “High Loon Season” — from July 1 through Columbus Day — as well as from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday – Saturday, from mid-May until the end of June, and Monday – Saturday (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.) from Columbus Day until Nov. 30. Winter hours are in effect from Dec. 1 to mid-May,

with the center open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday – Saturday. There is no admission charge to either the center or to the wildlife sanctuary.

The Loon Center holds a number of activities that are open to the public, most of which are free. These include weekly nature talks during the summer, year-round access to the Wildlife Sanctuary, special events, and access to wonderfully informative displays and videos about loons in the large meeting room. There also is a gift shop filled with loon-related gifts and souvenirs, including mugs, shirts, ornaments, cards, books, tapes, and videos.

Additionally, one can order a limited number of items from the online store at www.loon.org.

The two nature trails in the Markus Wildlife Sanctuary are open to the public year-round, from dawn to dusk. The Forest Trail is a short, 10-minute loop through mixed woods.

The Loon Nest Trail covers about 1.7 miles, leading to the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee where one might find a pair of nesting loons in season. The trail takes about an hour to complete.

Both trails are scenic and relatively easy, although good footwear (and plenty of bug spray in the summer) is recommended.

The Loon Center also serves as the headquarters of the Loon Preservation Committee, a self-funded project of the Audubon Society of New Hampshire.

The Loon Preservation Committee formed in 1975 after a group of concerned citizens noticed an alarming decline in the loon population on

area lakes. The LPC’s stated mission is “to restore and maintain a healthy population of loons throughout New Hampshire; to monitor the health and productivity of loon populations as sentinels of environmental quality; and to promote a greater understanding of loons and the natural world.”

According to the informational displays at the Loon Center, loons are a very ancient species. The Common Loon, the only species of loon that breeds in New Hampshire, is thought to have been on earth in its present form for more than 22 million years.

The typical life span of a loon, barring unforeseen encounters with predators or motorboats, or lead poisoning from fishing jigs and sinkers, is 25 – 30 years. Lead jigs and sinkers weighing one ounce or less, which are easily ingested by loons, should be less of a problem in the coming years, due to recently passed legislation in Concord prohibiting their use.

Loons return each spring from their winter habitats at the ocean to freshwater lakes once the ice is out to choose mates and nesting sites. By June, one or two eggs have been laid, with the nest tended to by both parents.

In July, the chicks hatch and, after about 12 weeks, the young loons are able to dive and feed on their own.

The LPC issues a warning this time of year to boaters, asking them to stay at least 150 feet from loons and loon chicks because the chicks are so vulnerable just as human activity on the

• Loons Continued from page 4 lakes increases. If an adult loon shows any signs of distress, such as craning its neck low over the water, thrashing around in the water, or vocalizing, it is a warning that they need more space.

Newly hatched chicks are small, dark, and cannot dive, and boat collisions are the greatest human-related cause of chick mortality — and the third-highest cause of adult loon mortality after lead poisoning from ingested fishing tackle and injuries from monofilament line and other fishing tackle.

In the fall, the loons return to the open water of the ocean. Juvenile loons stay at the ocean for about three or four years before returning to the freshwater lakes to begin the breeding cycle again.

Some loons return to the same nesting sites year-after-year but many don’t, and they don’t always stay with the same mate from the year before.

During the summer months, the Loon Center holds a Nature Talk Series every Thursday evening at 7:30, this year starting on July 10 and running through Aug. 21. Topics this year will include loons, coyotes, bears (with noted bear cub foster parent and rehabilitator Ben Kilham), peregrine falcons, osprey tracking from New Hampshire to South America (with Iain MacLeod of the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center), owls, and the annual loon census season report. The programs are free, but donations are appreciated.

The Loon Preservation Committee conducts a statewide annual loon census every July to count how many adult loons, juveniles, immatures, and chicks there are on as many lakes as possible throughout the state with

the help of volunteers in an effort to help determine the health of the loon population. This year, the loon census will take place Saturday, July 19, at 8 a.m., followed at 10 a.m. by the annual Loon Festival at the center, running until 2 p.m. The free festival features games, children’s activities, free food, and nature exhibits. Anyone interested in volunteering to help with the census may contact the Loon Center at 603476-LOON (5666).

Since the census began in 1975, the loon population in New Hampshire has more than doubled and, although the total number of loons on New Hampshire lakes increased slightly from 2012 to 2013, the trend over the past several years has shown a decline in the number of nesting pairs and surviving chicks, particularly on Squam Lake. According to the website of the Loon Preservation Committee (www. loon.org), “In 2013, Squam had twelve pairs of loons, which hatched only two chicks. Only one chick survived.

These results tied Squam’s worst years on record for chicks hatched (1977) and chicks surviving (1978 and 2007).

levels. Productivity from 2008-2013 is less than half the statewide average and far less than the rate needed to maintain a viable population (0.48 chicks surviving per territorial pair).

“Long-term effects of the high level of adult mortality on the lake seem to be a key component in the poor productivity since 2008. LPC’s work to ensure passage of SB 89 to reduce loon mortality from lead fishing tackle will help alleviate Squam’s poor adult survival and productivity rates.”

This decline in loon reproductive success on Squam led to the formation a few years ago of the LPC’s “Squam Lake Loon Initiative” which strives to ultimately restore a healthy population of loons on Squam Lake by increasing research efforts to assess the causes of nest failures, including analyzing and studying recovered loon carcasses and abandoned eggs to determine what contaminants and stressors contribute to the high mortality rate, as well as taking steps to try to reverse the trend.

Statewide last year, LPC biologists floated a record number of rafts to help loons nest and they protected a record number of nesting pairs with signs and ropeline. They recorded 157

loon chicks hatched, with 76 percent of them surviving.

In conjunction with the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, the Loon Center will once again be offering a weekly Loon Cruise on Squam Lake, on Mondays and Fridays at 3 p.m., in June, July, and August. The cruise, on comfortable, all-weather pontoon boats, lasts about 90 minutes, and a Loon Center biologist will be on board.

The routes of the cruises are chosen to maximize the opportunity for loon observations. Cruises leave from the Science Center’s dock on Route 3 in Holderness, next to Walter’s Basin, with discounts for senior citizens, and children ages 3 - 15. Local Musicians Look Forward To Reunion With Gordon Lightfoot

By Thomas P. Caldwell Death of the Moon, the most recent CD by Dr. Jack Polidoro — which also features his daughter, Stephanie — has met with more than just local acclaim.

“The Good Dr. Jack” said he received a telephone call from Gordon Lightfoot after the Toronto musician had listened to the CD. “We chatted for an hour about the production and each song,” Jack said, adding that Gordon “was very complimentary toward the whole production: the order of songs, cover design, and certain songs like ‘Goin’ Off To War’, ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, ‘Dresden Rose’, and Steph’s ‘Speranza’ instrumental.”

When Gordon Lightfoot comes to Wolfeboro as part of the Great Waters Music Festival on July 11, Jack and Stephanie will be in the audience and,

Jack said, “We will chat more after the show, backstage. We have tix and passes, courtesy of the band.”

Jack said he has been a fan of Gordon Lightfoot since a laboratory technician introduced him to the singer back when Jack was in graduate school. (He earned a Ph.D. in Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Massachusetts.)

As the Good Dr. Jack tells the story, he got interested in folk songs while he was in college. He took up the fivestring banjo, inspired by such groups as the Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary. He struck up a friendship with the members of the Kingston Trio and his brother, Tony, urged him to take up music as a career.

When he was in graduate school, he bought an old, 12-string Martin guitar, and that did it for him. When he heard

the music of Gordon Lightfoot, Jack decided that was “exactly the stuff I wanted to write”.

Today Jack has several signed photographs and album covers from Gordon Lightfoot who had prompted him to start writing in 1966 and 1967. Since 1984, Jack has made six CDs and has written 150 songs.

His new CD, Death of the Moon, demonstrates the transformative power of music. Jack says he was going through a difficult time in his personal life when he was working on the album, and much of the CD reflects that dark side with songs of pain and loss.

Yet it also offers hope and it challenges listeners to move on after tragedy.

The song that best captures that hope for the future is “Hey, Boston, Finish the Race Now” which is his tribute to the victims of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Deeply affected by the tragedy, Jack said he did not rush the writing of the song, working on it for more than three months in order to come up with something uplifting that would get people back on track.

“Hey Boston, you’ve got heart,” he sings. “We’re all patriots in this land.”

Another song that combines patriotism with a lament for lives lost is his very personal “Goin’ Off To War”

which he describes as “a father’s lament”. Dedicated to his son, Commander Michael A. Polidoro, USN, it is an anti-war song that nevertheless comes off as being very patriotic. He wrote it after Michael, who is in the Naval Reserve at Annapolis, was called up for the fourth time, at age 45, to serve at an embassy right at the time that embassies were being bombed.

“To put him in harm’s way a fourth time, I felt that enough is enough,” Jack said, adding, “It took me 40 years to write an anti-war song, and I never thought I would.”

The album also marks his first collaboration with his daughter, Stephanie.“It was really fun to do a team thing with Steph on this album,” he said, “and it’s a legacy for her.”

Stephanie’s contribution is an instrumental piece whose title, “Speranza”, means Hope. Currently a freshman at the University of Vermont where she plans to major in Research and Experimental Psychology, Stephanie said she wrote the piece for piano five years ago, when she was 13.

“I cranked out a lot of songs,” she said of that period, “and it was like therapy; really relaxing. All the other

Archer To Discuss Ceramics At Chase House

Chris Archer will discuss his work as a ceramicist during the first of the Signature of Excellence Lecture Series for 2014, sponsored by the League of NH Craftsmen-Meredith Fine Craft Gallery.

Taking place on Monday, July 7, at 7 p.m. in the Fireside Room at Chase House in Meredith, the talk will include an overview of Chris’ body of work.

He will explain the process of creating each piece as well as the inspiration behind it. At the end of the lecture, there will be some time for people to ask more in-depth questions about the process, the materials, the final product, or the artist himself.

Chris is a New Hampshire artist and teacher who creates functional pottery and sculptural forms and arranges site-specific installations and events. His work often employs or references functional objects and architecture as a means of provoking creative tension between sensory and cerebral awareness.

During the lecture, Chris will show the audience how he creates his art and he will give insights into his creative process.

Chris’ work has been exhibited

nationally and internationally, earning multiple awards. Pieces are in the collections of the San Angelo Museum of Art in San Angelo, Texas; Tokyo Geidai in Tokyo, Japan; and in private collections. His work has been

A new group will take the stage at the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand in Cate Park on Saturday, July 12 at 7 p.m. The Mary Maguire Band will bring music that weaves together the American roots of swing, western swing, folk, and country.

Mary’s voice has graced the airwaves from Los Angeles to Boston, from France to Russia and China, and she has appeared on stage with such talented artists as Tom Rush, Livingston Taylor, John Sebastian, Christine Lavin, and T. Graham Brown.

She has teamed with fellow band member Jeff Horton to present vocal harmony workshops at New York’s Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, at the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival in Boston, Maine’s Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival, and Connecticut’s Podunk Bluegrass Festival.

Jeff’s powerful vocal range is wellknown to the New England bluegrass scene and his solid acoustic bass was a key component of the Neon Valley Boys and Northern Lights.

When he and Mary met, they realized the musical possibilities, which resulted in a very powerful sound.

Tom Yoder is a Seacoast-region

resident who lends his talents to the band on fiddle and mandolin. He has performed with artists such as Dickie Betts, Travis Tritt, Jo Dee Messina, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard. He also played fiddle in the Don Campbell Band and performed at the Grand Ole Opry as a winner of a national talent contest.

John Tibert brings a uniquely warm mandolin sound and harmony vocals to the band. He also adds an adept guitarpicking sound.

The band will feature guest instrumentalist Taylor Whiteside for the Wolfeboro show.

The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand have been providing the free Saturday night concerts in Cate Park for 20 years.

There is a show every Saturday night during July and August. Shows start at 7 p.m. and run until 9 o’clock, with a brief intermission when a pass-thehat offering is taken. All donations go toward bringing in acts every summer.

If rain is threatening, the concert will be postponed and a sign will be hanging at the entrance to the park near the Wolfeboro Town Docks.

Clark House Plays Host To New Hampshire’s Fifth Regiment

By Sarah Wright I love history. Well, let me rephrase that. I love history now. When I was younger, like most teenagers, I didn’t really appreciate my history textbook.

But that’s why “living” history is so important. To be able to chat with a Civil War soldier in full garb is unlike anything you can read in a book. And these guys have done the homework for you.

The Fifth Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers formed in 1981 with the purpose of educating and promoting the state’s Civil War heritage through a living-history experience that reenacts a regiment’s life between 1861 and 1865. Authenticity is extremely important, with an executive board making sure that certain rules and regulations are followed, even down to a member’s appearance. Each member of the Regiment has been assigned a persona, with detailed background information on an actual New Hampshire soldier from the Civil War. They have learned their characters inside and out, so visitors can feel free to quiz them.

I sat down to chat with the chair of the volunteers, Chris Benedetto, who was portraying Corporal James Parrish from Company H (a group of men who were mostly from Wolfeboro, Tuftonboro, and Moultonborough at the time) during their encampment at the Clark House Museum in Wolfeboro.

Life on the battlefield was beyond tough. With only three men on the medical team of a regiment that could reach 1,000 men, treating the injured was a daunting job. “We didn’t know what a lead bullet could do to the body at that point. Bones would get shattered,” said Chris. “We learned a lot about what was needed medically, and the formation of the first ambulance corps in 1862 was a result of that.”

That was one area where New Hampshire had an advantage. Most of the state’s surgeons had gone to Dartmouth College which had the second-best medical school in the

country at that time.

Although the industrial revolution made it possible for troops to travel to Washington by train or steamboat, there was a lot of marching, which made coffee a valuable resource.

“That’s probably when people started drinking more coffee — after these soldiers were drinking it every day to keep going,” said Chris. Along with coffee, soldiers got basically a large cracker, some protein in the form of beef or pork, and a vegetable, such as peas.

Politics played a big part in Civil War times, just as today. Commander Edward E. Cross was a tough commander who worked the soldiers hard and trained them well. But he also

was an outspoken Democrat (which was actually the conservative party back then), and he made some enemies.

Chris believes that, if he had not been such a hothead, he might have been promoted to brigadier general.

I asked Chris what he thought was the biggest accomplishment of the New Hampshire Regiment. He cited the Battle of Antietam on Sept. 17, 1862. “The Regiment flanked the Confederate Army via sunken roads and managed to capture the flag of the Fourth North Carolina Regiment,” saud Chris. “It was the only time the NH Regiment had gotten that close to the Confederate Army and capturing a flag was the ultimate war prize.”

Unfortunately, the accomplishment came at a hefty price. The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest battle of the war, where 23,000 soldiers from both sides were either wounded or killed — even more casualties than D-Day. When one does a lot of extensive research, as Chris has, one finds some sad stories. Although most soldiers were age 16 or older, there was a 14-year-old boy from Manchester who served as a drummer. One day, he was playing cards with some other soldiers when shell from cannon fire exploded over them. The shrapnel instantly killed him.

Upper elementary students will ride on the NH Boat Museum’s wooden boat, Millie B, followed by a tour with the captain of the docked Winni Belle. To conclude their adventure, students will eat a bag lunch on board the Winnie Belle overlooking the Town Docks.

Session 1, for children entering lower elementary grades K-2 runs July 21-22 from 9 to 11:30 a.m., with Tuesday the 22nd being a longer field trip day.

Session 2 for children entering upper elementary grades 3-6 runs July 23-25 from 9 a.m. to noon, with Friday the 25th being a longer field trip day.

This year, for the first time, the Clark House is introducing themed backpacks that families can rent to learn more about period topics. Five themes will be unveiled at the introductory program on Wednesday, July 9, at 1 p.m.

The Wolfeboro Historical Society and the Clark House Museum help further the cause by playing host to events like this. In fact, the Clark House does a lot to teach adults and children about history every summer and this is just the beginning.

Miss Saigon To Premiere In Lakes Region The multi-Tony Award-winning musical “Miss Saigon” will arrive on stage at the Interlakes Summer Theatre in Meredith on Tuesday, July 15, running through Sunday, July 27.

Claude-Michel Schonbert and Alain Boublil, who were associated with “Les Miserables”, wrote the music and lyrics for “Miss Saigon”, an epic love story that is another moving testament to the human spirit.

“Miss Saigon” tells the passionate tale of a young Vietnamese bar girl, Kim, played by Quynh-My. Kim falls in love with Chris, an American G.I. stationed in Saigon during the war, played by Justin Luciano. Other cast members include Cartreze Tucker as John, Kelliann DiCarlo as Ellen, Tony Rodriguez III as the Engineer, and Jesse Alvarez as Thuy. Each provides a moving, emotional performance. “Miss Saigon” also has a dynamic supporting

cast bringing heart-pounding energy to the stage.

As the story continues, Vietnam falls to the enemy and Chris and Kim are separated. Many years later, Chris returns to Vietnam looking for Kim and discovers she is still alive and raising their son. The noise of helicopter blades brings audiences closer to Chris and Kim as the Viet Cong close in on Saigon. With little time left, Chris has some painful decisions to make.

“Miss Saigon” played on Broadway between 1991 and 2001 with almost 4,100 shows performed. It also played in more than 300 cities in 15 countries.

The London stage currently is doing a revival with opening-day ticket sales setting a new world record, and now it will be in Meredith.

“J.P. Morin bought the mill in 1913, added the powerhouse, and turned the mill into a very successful enterprise.

The Morin family operated the mill until its closing. It employed mostly French-Canadian immigrants who were very proud to work at the mill and considered the Belknap Mill to be ‘family.’

“After the mill closed, there was an intense battle to save it from demolition, which obviously was successful, and the rest is history, as they say.”

One happy aside from her work of researching and writing about the mill was meeting interesting people connected with the stories she pursued.

No story of the Belknap Mill is complete without a big mention of Peter Karagianis, a longtime Laconia business owner and the man with the plan to save the mill. Carol speaks warmly of getting to know Peter.

Clearly impressed with the efforts of the Save the Mills group, Carol discovered what they were up against when they fought urban renewal and saved the old mills. “At the time that the Save the Mills Society was formed, the mill was slated to be demolished, it was abandoned, and it was in rough shape. The mill had become the target of vandals. The fight to save this historic building is certainly one for the record books, but I think people need to read the story of the preservation of the mill. This story will take readers on a rollercoaster ride, and it is an incredible story.”

Getting Out on the Lake … If You Don’t Have a Boat

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Why do so many people come to the Lakes Region for vacations? Yes, it’s the mountains and the many fun things to do from hiking to swimming to shopping and dining. But one of the major reasons people return to the area year after year for vacationing is the wonderful lakes. From big Winnipesaukee to more intimate area lakes, boating fun attracts many to vacation in the area.

Whether you are a newcomer to the Lakes Region or a returning vacationer, there is no reason to forego boating in the area if you do not own a boat, canoe, or kayak. There are many marinas offering boat rentals of all kinds, catering to everyone from canoe-lovers to power boat enthusiasts.

At Canoe King on Route 16 in Tamworth, water-lovers can rent canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards.

“We have been in business over 50 years; we were the original canoe rental company when we started in North

Conway,” says Mitch Gordon, owner of Canoe King. “We have been located in Ossipee since 1999.”

many of those who rent are vacationing at campgrounds (the Bearcamp River is close by). Canoe King offers a shuttle service for the river trip and to many of the local lakes. If renters would like to take the canoe or kayak on their vehicle, Canoe King will provide a cartop carrier.

Some of those who rent are experienced boaters, but many are new to boating. No license is required to rent canoes or kayaks, but Canoe King insists that renters be strong swimmers.

The company does not rent to those under 18 years of age. (All rentals come with life jackets and paddles.) For further information, call 603-323-7442.

Goodhue Hawkins on Sewall Road in Wolfeboro rents Cobalt Bow Riders (20 - 26 ft.) and Pontoon boats in 18 and 25-foot sizes. The good news for those who wish to rent a boat or pontoon is that, when renting boats under 25 horsepower engines, no boating license is needed in New Hampshire.

For anything at 25 hp or above, a boating license is required. Should potential renters not have a boating license, they can take a test right at Goodhue Hawkins (and other marinas) and obtain a temporary boating safety certificate that will allow them to rent the boat they have been dreaming of taking out on the lake.

Says Steve Durgan, general manager at Goodhue Hawkins, “We have been renting boats since about 1984. The most popular boats we rent are 21-foot Cobalts. All our rental boats are new

this year and we get very busy in the summer months.”

Rentals are by the day or week and Steve suggests that those wishing to rent a boat book well in advance.

“Families vacationing at cottages in the area book their boat rentals early. We also offer a discount of 50 percent for those renting after Labor Day.” Goodhue Hawkins gives all boat and pontoon renters a lake chart to help them acclimate to Winnipesaukee.

Boat renters can keep the boat at the Goodhue dock or at a dock where they are vacationing. Call 603-569-2371 for rental details.

Irwin Marine, located at 958 Union Avenue in Laconia, is a bustling place.

Parts rental manager Shawn Minor explains that Irwin welcomes those who wish to rent a boat. The marina offers rentals of runabouts, pontoons, and Bowriders. “The most popular boat we rent is the 21-foot Bowrider and the 23-foot-long pontoon boat,” says Shawn.

Most rentals take place between Memorial Day and Labor Day with all kinds of people coming in to rent a boat in order to enjoy the lake. Irwin will deliver the rental to the docks where the renter is vacationing, which offers an added convenience. “For example,” says Shawn, “last summer we had a family that rented a runabout for a half-week and a pontoon for the other half of the week and we delivered to their vacation site.”

Irwin rents by the half-day, day, or a five-day rental from their Union Avenue location, which is where renters can pick up the boat for a day (or longer) of fun on the water. “The five-day rental seems to be a popular option,” adds Shawn.

The most popular boats in Irwin’s rental fleet are the Sea Ray 205 Sports, seating up to eight people. All boats in the fleet are 2011 or newer, making for smooth riding on the water.

Concerning the boat license rules, Shawn says, “Most boat rental places are allowed by the state of New Hampshire to administer the test to obtain a temporary boating license. If you pass the test, you can use it to operate a boat for up to two weeks, once annually.”

At Fay’s Boat Yard, located at 71 Varney Point Road in Gilford, vacationers can rent by the half-day, day, and week.

Fay’s has canoes, kayaks, sailboats, fishing boats, sport boats, and pontoon boats in their rental fleet.

As soon as there is some water on the lake after ice-out, they begin to rent boats, although most rentals occur during the busy summer months.

“We have a diverse group of people that rent boats from Fay’s,” she adds.

“Some are families, some fishermen and others. We offer a temporary, 14day boating license that renters can get after taking the small boating test for operating anything over 25 horsepower.”

Those who are in the Alton Bay area can stop by Andrew’s Marine Service to rent a boat. The marina has BowRiders and pontoon boats and has been renting to the public for many years.

“Most of those we rent to are vacationing families,” says Debbie, office man-

ager at Andrew’s. “People can rent by the day or week.”

As with many boat rental businesses, Andrew’s includes a navigational chart and life jackets with every boat they rent. Rentals are offered from the Minge Cove Alton Bay location, where BowRiders from 19 to 24 feet are available, as well as pontoon boats.

Andrew’s also offers rentals from Wolfeboro Corinthian Yacht Club in Wolfeboro, with 19- to 21-foot BowRiders available. Call 603-875-0654 for information.

Meredith Marina, located off Route 3 in downtown Meredith, has been renting boats for about 20 years. According to sales manager Chris Templeton, many of those renting boats are fami-

At Shep Brown’s Boat Basin on Lovejoy Sands Road in Meredith, boats can be rented by the day or week(s); there is a discount if renting for seven days or more. Rentals are for Lake Winnipesaukee and those who rent a boat can park their cars on the marina’s property and take the boat from the Shep Brown dock.

The Monterey Bowriders are popular rental options at Shep Brown’s because many people like to tow skis or tubes for water fun. The Bowriders come in 19 to 23 feet.

Other options are pontoons (brand new) or a Boston Whaler or aluminum fishing boat.

At Channel Marine, located on Channel Lane in Weirs Beach, co-owner Vin Mullarkey says they rent three types of boats: pontoon, fiberglass runabouts, and personal watercraft.

“We have Bennington Pontoon Boats and they are very popular,” said Vin. Boaters can do many things with the popular pontoons, from anchoring at a favorite sandbar and enjoying a day in the water with a group to water tubing.

Pontoons have become a floating living room for many.

In the summer months, those who wish to rent a boat in the area come to Melvin Village Marina. According to Matt Galvin, sales, many people who rent boats love tubing and/or water skiing. The Harris FloteBote Pontoon Boats are great for tubing and the marina’s three tube pontoons are very popular with boat renters.

“We also have 19- and 21-foot Four Winns Runabouts and an 18-foot pontoon — boaters do not need a boating certificate to operate the 18-foot pontoon,” says Matt.

Melvin Village Marina adds new boats to the rental fleet each year and boats are 2012 or newer. “We rent by the day or week or for longer. Last year, we had a vacationing family that rented a boat for a few three-week blocks,” said Matt.

What is the most popular boat that Melvin Village Marina rents? Matt says, “The Four Winns 21-footer because it has the power. Winnipesaukee is a big lake and the Four Winns can easily get boaters where they want to go.”

Thurston’s Marina has been a Weirs Beach/Lakes Region fixture for many years and, if anyone knows boats, it is Don Thurston, owner/partner at the marina. Don oversees boat rentals at

the busy marina and says many families on vacation stop by to rent a boat to make their stay even more enjoyable.

“We get a lot of repeat renters,” he said. “They build their vacation around getting their boat rental and they often book a year in advance.”

The Thurston’s Marina rental fleet includes deck boats and pontoons (Don says among these is a 23-foot pontoon with triple pontoons.) “All our rental boats are brand new and high-quality and we have a large fleet,” he adds.

Thurston’s offers dock space on site for those who need a place to tie up their boat if renting multiple days.

There is a huge car parking lot so boaters can simply park on-site, rent a boat, and get out on the lake.

Rentals are for days, multiple days, or weeks. “Pontoons are very popular to rent because people can tube behind a pontoon. Others want a power boat so they can waterski all day,” adds Don. Although renting a boat is an expense, Don says renters know it is a great, less-expensive option for those who want to enjoy the lake but do not want the hassle or greater expense of owning a boat.

the lake is still beautiful, with great weather, right into September and boats are still available for rental well after Labor Day. Lakeside Boat Rentals also offers rentals of tubes and waterskis for those that do not own their own equipment.

Stephen knows the lake very well and spends a good amount of time with each renter to go over the boat, explaining all about the lake and great places boat renters might wish to visit.

Belknap and Busiel mills. After local attorney Arthur Nighswander bought the Busiel Mill, the Society’s focus turned to saving the Belknap Mill. In order to make people aware of that fact, the organization changed its name to the Belknap Mill Society.

Carol explained, “The basic structure of the organization has changed very little over time but it has made numerous adjustments to its displays and programming, according to the changes in society. I think the biggest changes for the society will happen as the organization deals with the challenges that all museums face.”

The former mill employees that Carol interviewed added to the joy of writing the book. She recalled, “I met some wonderful former mill workers and they were all very happy to be interviewed. There are some very interesting taped (and transcribed) interviews with mill workers in the Belknap Mill’s archives as well. I really enjoyed speaking with the mill workers (nearly all French-Canadian immigrants), and it was amazing to hear their stories and how they made hosiery before the use of [modern] technology. It almost made me feel that they produced better hosiery without the technology that we have today.

They were very proud people, and their goal, each day, was to produce as much hosiery as they could while maintaining the highest of quality. They absolutely would not allow shoddy workmanship.

The workers were very satisfied and happy people and their stories are very inspiring.”

Carol also got to know J. Paul Morin, a member of the family of the former

Belknap Mill owner. “J.P. Morin was Paul’s great-grandfather and he owned and operated the Belknap Mill. Paul’s grandfather ran the mill, as did Paul’s father. Paul spent many days as a boy following his father around the mill, and he is the last one in his family who has first-hand knowledge of how hosiery was made when the business was a working mill. When Paul’s family ran the mill, it was known as ‘Morin’s Mill.’”

Continuing, Carol said it was a great honor to work closely with Paul on the project. “He provided me with so much information that I never would have had without his knowledge. He is a true gentleman, and he possesses the Morin family trait of having a deep sense of duty — to family and to the community. I learned so much from Paul beyond all the inner workings of the mill. One woman who had married into the Morin family told me that she was truly blessed to be part of this family. I can certainly understand why.

They are great people.”

Carol added, “I came away with so much from this project, and I know readers will, too. The book includes the history of industry in Laconia, which is an incredible subject. The thing that really stuck with me was how the mill owners (and that includes the Morins) and the business leaders in the community worked so hard to build a better Laconia, for all its residents. They cared about the people that worked for them and, in turn, those workers gave their employers their all.

They really were like a big family and they all pulled together in the same direction.”
