nce in a while, when a family experiences great loss, they manage to turn their experience into a way to help others. That is certainly true for the family of Mandy Grier. Mandy passed away after living with Type One Diabetes since she was a child. Kevin Morris, Mandy’s father, determined to turn his loss into something that would help others, created M&M Island Cruises, which will offer lake lovers a chance to tour Winnipesaukee this summer. M&M Island Cruises (which stands for Mandy and Mylo, with Mylo being Mandy’s Diabetic Alert Dog), will launch this summer (2021), offering memorable and fun chartered cruises on Kevin’s pontoon boat for parties of up to 20 people. Mandy’s sisters, Kelly McAllister and Annie Grier, will help their Dad run the business. What is the goal of M&M Island Cruises? According to information from the Morris family, “The day Mylo became a part of our Mandy’s world, her life was forever changed. As a Diabetic Alert Dog, Mylo not only gave her irreplaceable companionship and independence but lifesaving changes as well. She prevented hospitalizations and helped improve her overall health and the quality of her life. Mylo’s presence in Mandy’s life afforded her opportunities that she otherwise never would have known. We lost our Mandy on February 22, 2019 to complications from her diabetes and that day changed our lives and our worlds forever. We saw what Mylo added to all of our lives, but especially to Mandy’s and we want to provide this same opportunity to another diabetic girl or boy and change their lives as well. “M&M Island Cruises on Lake Winnipesaukee has a mission and goal to raise money for a diabetic service dog. We started a GoFundMe collection (https://gofund.me/1e08352b) and have secured enough funds to do so. We are working with a local dog trainer from Gilford, NH and we have already identified our first recipient. We are beyond excited to be able to help this young girl in this way and we plan to keep doing so with other children in the future. In our efforts to memorialize and honor our Mandy, we could not imagine a better way than this.”

other dog, with Kevin’s goal of being able to present a Diabetic Service Dog every year to a deserving child. Mylo continues to live with Mandy’s husband, and there has likely been an adjustment for the dog when she lost her beloved friend. “Shealways knew where Mandy was,” Kevin says. “Mylo was just five months old when Mandy got her and the dog is about 8 years old now.” The cruise business will pick up and drop off passengers at Meredith Bay and the Weirs Beach areas, and Kevin stresses that calling ahead to book is a must. The boat is a beauty, with 31 feet of deck for relaxing and visiting with friends and family. The pontoon boat has twin 250 HP motors and will be able to take passengers around the lake to sightsee, learn the lake’s history or to just cruise the waters, perhaps stopping in a safe spot to swim. The pontoon boat has wine racks, a refrigerator, and an eight-speaker sound system. (The double-decker pontoon has bathrooms and changing rooms on board as well.) Safety is first with Kevin, and he has a commercial license and all necessary safety equipment. M&M Island Cruises will be available for charters from mid June through the end of September, weather permitting, so if you want a chance to get out on the lake in a fun and unique manner, call Kevin now! While you enjoy a cruise this summer, remember too that you will be helping a child receive a service dog. Mylo changed Mandy’s life for the better and a service dog for a deserving child will continue that joy into the future. Surely Mandy, a very giving and positive person who lived her life to the fullest, would approve. For information on M&M Island Cruises, call 603-387-8523 or visit www.mandmislandcruisesnh.com. Historic Dugout Dates to 1660

By Leigh Sharps A Native American dugout, first discovered in Veerie Cove on the northwest shore of Big Squam Lake in 1939, was finally returned to its hometown of Holderness in the summer of 2019 after an 80-year layover at the Shelburne Museum in Vermont. The dugout’s return to the Holderness Historical Society’s Museum was greeted with much fanfare, and public interest at the museum was immediate after it was first reported (‘Dugout Returns Home To Holderness’: The Laker Sept. 2019). Interest was so great, in fact, that the

museum began seeing more patrons than they ever had, opening its doors for extended hours and accommodating special requests, offhours, to view it. It also piqued a special interest for one Museum board member, Malcolm ‘Tink’ Taylor of Holderness. Known locally as a tenacious person, this interest started him on the road to discovering the dugout’s age when found, the tree’s age when it was cut down, the pursuit to craft something to hold the watercraft off the floor and the goal to show the public just how a dugout, predecessor

of the birch canoe, was made! The history of the dugout’s discovery will always remain fascinating. Three fishermen ( James King and Harold V. Smith of Tilton and retired Canadian Mountie Horace Wheaton) snagged onto the wooden dugout, a predecessor to the birch canoe, thinking they had ‘caught’ a log in 14 feet of water. When one fisherman dove to rescue his lure, he found the log was hollowed out and weighed down by stones (often Native Americans living near water ‘buried’ their deceased this way, sinking a craft with heavy stones. Mud, muck and water preserve the wood from certain organisms like ants, insects, etc.). The trio removed the rocks, raised the dugout, then brought it to the shore. It was briefly exhibited in Holderness but the relic didn’t receive much interest at that time. It was removed to the Granite State Garage in Tilton where Mr. King worked and it sat outside until it was brought inside in 1955, then sold for $100 to the Shelburne Museum (on the shores of Lake Champlain). In February of 2019, the Shelburne Museum’s Public Relations Director, Leslie Wright, noticed the names of Tink and his wife, Fran, in a 1990s guest book and saw they were from Holderness, NH. It rang a bell with her and she realized a dugout from Holderness had been stored in a museum building. It had never been exhibited, just stored in a separate building on the grounds. She called Taylor and asked if he would be interested in its return to Holderness. Being a veteran Holderness Historical Society board member, and a local historian, Tink jumped at the request. Tink and Ron Huntoon, a fellow board member, made the trip to Vermont and a long, slow ride back with the dugout in tow, to its home in Holderness. That’s how Tink immediately became the Dugout Curator. Moving it into the lower level of the Holderness Museum (in the center of town on the Squam Channel) was another huge effort as the dugout weighed about 220 pounds and is 13 ½ feet long. Several dedicated volunteers helped with the move and it was placed in the mu-

seum’s lower level where there was adequate room for the large dugout (or longboat: monoxylon mishoons: meaning ‘taken from one tree’). It is displayed there today, but in an improved manner. At the time of the dugout’s return, Tink assured the public he would be getting a carbon dating of the dugout so its age could be added to this amazing story. A small sample of the wood was sent to the Paleo Research Institute of Golden, Colo. to be tested. This incorporated a series of extensive stress tests (radio-carbon) that involved freezedrying to minus 107 degrees to remove moisture, then heating it over 110 degrees Celsius to extract any iron and calcium carbonates. Early last summer, Tink, Dugout Curator, received the results which officially marked the age of the dugout to be about 1660 (plus or minus) or mid-17th century. There is much recorded evidence of the Cowasuck Branch of the Penacook-Abenaki People’s existence in the Holderness/ Ashland/Campton area. The mid-1600s was about the time, history tells us, that the indigenous population in the area were driven out, fleeing to northern NH, and then to Canada. It’s believed they were

taken in by the Jesuit Missionary at St. Francis (Odanak) in Quebec. With the addition of this important dating information regarding the dugout’s history, Tink embarked on his next plan: to find someone to build a reproduction ‘cradle’ to hold the dugout. It had been resting on the floor for about eight months. Last summer, Tink asked local resident Steve Sharps, of Sharps Lumber Company, if he could help. After he and Tink researched photos of Native American dugout cradles, Sharps constructed one of birch with deerskin draped on the boat’s contact points. Tink stated, “That birch cradle, so generDugout Curator shows how technicians ously donated, perfectly dismeasured growth rings to date the craft. plays our Native dugout treasure. Not only does it hold the dugout up for better viewing, especially for school children, but it reminds us of the skillful use of birch wood and bark by our indigenous forebears here. It is very appropriate, since the Native Americans had such a reverence for the birch tree. Bark was used for shelter and for the canoes they made after the making of heavy dugouts were abandoned. Birch was also used for writing on, and they even boiled syrup from the birch tree sap.” The dugout was placed on the cradle in the fall. Then Tink more good news. cians from the UNH/Forestry Cooperative Extension, Don Quigley and Michael Gagnon, came to the museum recently to determine the actual age of the tree when it was cut down. This also involved an extensive process, said Tink. “At the time the tree, from which the dugout was gouged, was felled, it was 225 years old established by its annual growth rings. It has also since been determined by the Cooperative technicians to be hewn from white pine (pinus strobus).” The procedure after finding a tree to use for a dugout was a long process. First a suitable tree was found. It was then ‘girdled by fire’ to kill it which could take up to a year. It was then felled with stone axes. The top layer is burned and the charred wood scraped away. Then the following layers were burned and gouged away until the trunk was hollowed out. This was all completed with sharpened edge, mostly granite, stone scrapers (or adzes). “Once hollowed out,” explained Tink ,“the bottom was tooled to be flat for stability upon the water and often one side Tink Taylor shows the log he plans to turn into a dugout later this summer. was left thicker than the other as a counter-balance for leaning over to spear fish. Such dimensions are evident in this Squam Lake dugout.” Tink (with much volunteer help) has dedicated the last 18 months since the dugout arrived in town gathering extremely significant information about its history. He most probably will never be finished, though, with his efforts to bring recognition to the area’s Native American heritage. In fact, he is well into the planning stages of his next endeavor. He has been searching for his own ‘suitable’ and’ just right’

white pine log, with the hopes of showing the public just how one of those dugouts was made with hand tools. This year, while his land in Holderness was being logged by Wade Reed of Rumney, Tink told him he was looking for that one ‘perfect’ log for his new ‘project’. Mr. Reed found that ‘perfect’ white pine tree, cut it down and prepared the 12-foot log placing it on the side of Rte. 113 close to the road. Tink and a neighbor plan to ‘escort’ the log soon to the Museum grounds. Then Tink will move forward with his plans for later this summer. He is hoping for a two-day event in late August centered around the making of that pine log into a dugout. It is just in the planning stages, he emphasizes. The celebration would be a ‘reunion’ for NH-based Abenaki tribespeople, he said. “Some folks, who have already asked to come this summer, were a part of the ‘Native Village’ we had on the town common back in 2011 when Holderness celebrated the 250th anniversary of the town’s founding. It’s recalled that long before 1761 there were other occupants here. From several discoveries of artifacts about town (and at Livermore Falls on the Pemigewasset River) early occupation dates

back to the Late Archaic and the Woodland Periods of some 7,000 years ago.” In 2001, when Rte. 113 (that runs beside the Squam Channel and Big Squam Lake) was relocated to make way for a public boat launch and a large parking lot (across the road), along with the construction of a Visitors’ Center and parking lot for the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, an archaeological dig, initiated by Abenaki descendants and supporters, unearthed arrowheads, shards of pottery, a polished stone gouge and human remains. These were found in the field beside the Science Center bordering Davison’s Brook. Additional artifacts were found in town, when a new sidewalk was constructed along Main Street, and under/near a residence and also behind the town’s bandstand (on the Channel). Artifacts were found at a dig on the east bank of the Pemigewasset (Pemi) River at Livermore Falls in Campton. That dig has been continuing off and on for the past few years. Other discoveries have been made along Lower Squam River at the mouth of Owl Brook in Ashland and also at the confluence with the Pemi. Undoubtedly, Native American artifacts will be found for decades to come in the Lakes Region and Pemi River watershed district. With folks like Tink Taylor, historical societies and, of course, dedicated residents in all towns and cities around the state, our continued recorded history will never end! NOTE: The Holderness Historical Society is a non-profit organization working to preserve the history of their town and the area. The dugout is in continual protective care of the Society and can be seen from spring to fall, 10am-noon on Saturdays or by appointment (holdernesshistsoc@yahoo.com). School groups, other town historical societies (several have already made visits), and other organizations are always welcome, too. Look for information on the possible Native American event at the Museum location on their website. Thanks to Tink Taylor for his pertinent information for this story.

Destructive Zebra Mussels Threaten New Hampshire's Lakes Zebra mussels could mean the end of swimming and boating as we know it.

If you take your boat out-of-state, tiny zebra mussel larvae could hitch a ride back to New Hampshire, unseen, in any water droplet remaining in your boat.

With their razor-sharp shells, these animals make it unsafe to swim in lakes without wearing shoes. Their ability to reproduce rapidly allows them to infect lakes quickly, causing permanent damage. These mussels cause millions of dollars in damage to water pipes, docks, and boat engines every year. Barely larger than a coin, these terrors grow quickly and overwhelm native species, paving the way for invasive weed growth and algae blooms.

Zebra mussels have overtaken and devastated lakes in neighboring Vermont and Massachusetts. New Hampshire’s lakes may be next.

These creatures could also hide in a clump of weeds hanging off your boat or trailer and end up in your favorite lake.

Our lakes can’t take care of themselves. They need YOU! Today, you can do your part by investing in the care of New Hampshire’s 1,000 fragile lakes.

Please take a moment and help prevent the spread of invasive species today. Your favorite lake needs you!

Salsa, optional, but if you use it, you may want to eliminate the balsamic glaze Guacamole 3 ripe avocados, peeled and pitted 1 jalapeno, cored and finely diced. Add another pepper if you like the extra heat. (Use caution when handling jalepenos) ½ cup finely diced red onion Juice of 2 limes 1/3 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro 4-5 cloves of garlic, minced Sea salt & fresh cracked black pepper to season ¼ tsp ground cumin 1 Roma tomato, cored and chopped Salsa 5 large beef steak tomatoes 2 green bell peppers 1 yellow bell pepper 1 orange bell pepper 1 large or 2 medium red onions 1 bunch fresh cilantro 2 bunches of scallions 3 cloves garlic, minced ½ tsp chili powder ½ tsp ground cumin ½ tsp granulated garlic Salt and pepper A few splashes of your favorite hot sauce The day before, in a skillet on the stove on medium-high heat, add the oil. Dredge all the shrimp in the Cajun seasoning to completely

coat them. Cook the shrimp for about 2 minutes on each side. Do not overcook them. With tongs or a slotted spoon, pull the shrimp and put on sheets of paper towels to let them drain. Once at room temp, put them in a Ziploc or plastic container and refrigerate. For the guacamole, using a fork or potato masher, mash the avocados in a bowl to your preferred consistency. Stir in the rest of the ingredients except for the tomato. Taste and adjust the seasoning any way needed to your liking. If making the day before, add the tomato just before serving. Also if doing the night before, put in a Tupperware container and cover the top with plastic wrap so the whole top surface is covered. Press down slightly to make sure there is no air in there as it is air that will make guacamole turn the color from green to brown. Refrigerate it unless eating immediately. As for the salsa, place all ingredients in a bowl and mix until thoroughly combined. Refrigerate. To assemble the appetizer, use the sliced cucumber as the bottom,

top each with a spoonful of guacamole, then the radish and place a shrimp on top of that. Top with a little salsa or balsamic glaze and you have yourself a mouthful of awesomeness. The mix of spicy shrimp, creaminess of the guacamole, crunch and freshness of the cucumber and radish will give you a great mix of flavors and consistencies that work well together. Since we are already talking shrimp, let’s go with another shrimp recipe that is great cold, although it’s awesome hot as well if you care to try these at home. Other than traditional shrimp cocktail or a peel ’n eat, it’s not often you see shrimp served cold. This one is very unique and will be well received. This recipe is for two pounds, and again, I would suggest using 20/24 size shrimp which will get you 40-50 total shrimp. Fire ’n Ice Shrimp 2 lbs of shrimp, 20/24 size, peeled and deveined 1 tbsp butter 1/3 cup white wine ½ cup Thai sweet chili sauce ¼ cup whipping cream First things first. If the shrimp were frozen, which is the norm, once they have thawed, give them a rinse and drain, then put onto paper towels to pat them dry. In a large skillet of a medium pot, heat the butter over a medium heat and add the shrimp. Lightly stir as to not damage the shrimp. Turn the heat to medium-high and add the wine and cook, continuing to lightly stir and flip the shrimp. Once the shrimp are almost pink, stir in the chili sauce and whipping cream. Again, mix gently to combine all the liquid and cook for about a minute or two until the shrimp are completely cooked. Pour into the shallowest pan you have that won’t flow over the top. This is to try to cool it as quick as possible to stop the cooking process. Once to room temp, pour into a container and cover and refrigerate. Once ready to serve on the boat, have a serving spoon and small paper plates and eat with either a toothpick or fork. You are going to love the sauce on the shrimp. I love appetizers. When I go out to eat, there have been many times where I order an app and then order two more as my main course, so here we go again with a yummy appetizer. We are sticking to the sea for this classic dip. Seriously, who doesn’t love a good dip? I’m not sure if I have ever met a dip I didn’t like, and since this one is a lobster dip, well, need I say more? You can make this with fresh cooked lobster meat or buy frozen or canned. Regardless of the packaging, make sure it is drained well, including fresh. Get as much liquid out of it as possible. (If you like to make homemade seafood soups or chowders, always save any liquid and freeze and use when it is time to make that great soup.) This recipe makes 2 cups of dip. As for what you want to use to dip into the dip, the choice is yours. The night before, I like to take a few fresh sub rolls, cut into ¾-inch slices, dab melted butter on both sides, put on a pan, top with a few shakes of Parmesan cheese and bake in a 350-degree preheated oven for about 3-5 minutes or until browned but still somewhat soft. Once on the boat, spread the dip over the bread slices with a knife. I suggest you double up on this recipe...at least. Lobster Dip 1 can of lobster meat (7 oz), or fresh or frozen 1 tbsp minced onion 1 tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice I package of cream cheese, 8 oz, softened 4 tbsp butter, softened 1 ½ tbsp horseradish 1-2 tbsp sour cream If using fresh or frozen lobster meat, you will need to chop it somewhat. We all love big chunks of lobster, but since this is a dip, it needs to go a long way. Of course, if you want big chunks, you can always double or triple up the lobster meat to make an awesome dip even more outstanding. Combine all ingredients except the sour cream in a bowl and mix well. I do so somewhat gingerly to keep from busting

up the lobster even more than it already is. Once done, if you are good with the consistency, so be it. If you care to add a little sour cream, do so. Put in a container and cover and refrigerate. Whether you are eating this on the boat or making for any affair, this is at its best when done a day before. Now let’s take a stroll down the sandwich aisle, shall we? As I said earlier, this is where I like to take a fairly basic item and throw a few great twists into the recipe and voila, you have yourself something delicious, as well as original and unique. This first one is a take on chicken salad that can work well as a sandwich on any type of bread (I suggest a nice fresh croissant) or top a great garden salad. At home, I love putting this mix between a grilled cheese using Muenster cheese. If you are planning to use as sandwiches on the boat, this recipe will get you 6-8 sandwiches, depending on the size of your bread choice. Avocado Chicken Salad Sandwich 1 lb cooked chicken meat, chopped or shredded. (I prefer a mix of white and dark meat) 1 cup of cooked corn off the cob, ideally grilled first ½ lb cooked bacon, chopped ¼ cup chopped green onions 1-2 tbsp fresh dill, depending on your taste 2 squirts of Dijon mustard Mayo as needed to get to your preferred consistency. Less is more. You can always add more later if needed. 3 or more large ripe avocados added at last minute before serving Sliced hard boiled eggs, optional Lettuce & tomato if desired on the sandwich Lemon Parmesan Dressing if on a Salad ¼ cup fresh squeezed lemon juice ¼ cup olive oil 3 tbsp Parmesan cheese Salt & pepper to season Bread of choice

For the chicken salad, add all ingredients except the mustard, mayo and avocados to a bowl and combine. Add the mustard, a few heavy spoonsful of mayo and mix. Adjust the mayo as needed. If making sandwiches, I would suggest doing so at home on the morning of your boat trek or on the boat. Either way, I suggest peeling the avocados just before serving and cut into slices or chunks and put into the sandwich. Add sliced egg and/or lettuce and tomato and enjoy. Next up is a pretty cool potato salad that’s a huge hit in my family. Potato salads are a favorite with many, and this one is popular as a potluck dish at family gatherings. As importantly, it goes very well with just about anything. This recipe feeds 10 and I would suggest making it a day prior to let all the outstanding flavors and ingredients combine for 24-36 hours. Dill Pickle and Bacon Potato Salad 3 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, cut into ½ - ¾-inch dices. Do not peel them ¾ cup mayo 1 tbsp brown mustard 1/3 cup dill pickle relish ½ tsp of dried dill ½ tsp each of salt and black pepper 8 strips of cooked bacon, chopped 6 hard boiled eggs, chopped 6 scallions, thinly sliced Throw the diced potatoes into a large pot, cover with water and boil until they are fork tender, about 8-10 minutes. Drain, pour back into the pot and cool with cold water. Once cooled, drain very well. You don’t want any moisture coming out once mixed, so take your time to let them drain/dry out. In a small to medium bowl, combine the mayo, mustard, relish, dill and salt and pepper until well blended. Dump the spuds into a large bowl, add the mayo mix, bacon, and eggs and with a rubber spatula, gently fold everything together. Just before serving, sprinkle the top with the scallions and serve as is, or,

fold them into the salad. Regardless, stir it well before serving whether the scallions are on top or mixed within. Enjoy! One more quick meal thought before I give you a couple of sweet recipes. If you really want to be creative the night before, marinate a bunch of one-bite size steak tips in a teriyaki glaze and grill them to rare/medium rare and yank them off the heat and let cool. Boil some lobsters. Once the lobsters are room temp, shuck them and put all the meat in a plastic container or Ziploc bag and refrigerate. Have another container of melted butter. Once the steak is chilled, lightly toss with more sauce and sesame seeds, and then top with chopped scallions at service. Once on the ship, take the butter out early so the temp will turn it into drawn butter again. About 1 ½ hours before eating, get the steak tips and lobster out as well. Once ready, spear the tips with toothpicks and eat and dip the lobster in butter and enjoy life to the fullest. Now for some sweet desserts. For a day on the boat, we don’t want messy and I think these fit into that category. Plus, they are so good, which is also very important. The first is a delicious bar, the second is an incredible cookie, and then a simple fruit recipe. The first one will give you 20 bars and the cookie recipe about 20 cookies. Zesty Lemon Bars For the Crust Just shy of ¾ cup cold unsalted butter, cut into 1 inch pieces 1 ½ cups flour ½ cup confectioner’s sugar 3 tbsp cornstarch

1 ½ tsp coarse salt For the Topping 2 cups sugar 4 large eggs, slightly beaten 3 tbsp flour 5/8 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice, plus ¾ tsp ¼ cup milk, plus 1 tbsp ¼ tsp coarse salt Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the oven rack in the center of the oven and spray a 9x13-inch glass baking dish on bottom and walls. In the bowl of a food processor, combine the flour, confectioner’s sugar, cornstarch and salt and process to combine. Gradually add the butter to the processor until the mixture is pale yellow and resembles a coarse meal, about 10 seconds once all butter is in. Dump the crust mixture into the prepared dish and using your fingers, press the dough down firmly to create a ¼-inch crust on the bottom and also go up about ½ inch along the sides. Cook in the oven for 20 minutes, rotating halfway through. Set aside. While the crust is cooking, in a large bowl, whisk the eggs, sugar, and flour together. Stir in the lemon juice, milk and salt and combine well. Pour the well-mixed topping over the cooked crust and pop the pan back into the oven for 20 minutes or until the topping has just barely set, but not browned. Pull and transfer onto a wire cooling rack and cool completely. Once at room temp, cut into 20 equal size bars. Enjoy a couple before putting them in a container for the big day on the lake! Bacon Caramel Chocolate Chip Cookies 2 ¼ cup flour ½ tsp kosher salt

Why the Water Matters to Novice Kayakers Kayaking is a fun way to spend an afternoon, particularly in summertime. If smiles on the faces of kayakers aren’t enough to convince you just how fun this sport can be, perhaps statistics can convince you how enjoyable it is to paddle away in a kayak. According to the Physical Activity Council, which each year conducts the largest single-source research study of sports, recreation and leisure activity participation in the United States, recreational kayaking is the most popular paddlesport in the United States, attracting more than 11 million participants each year. People who have never before been in a kayak may be intrigued by those statistics and tempted to follow the example set by millions of kayakers who take to the water every day when the weather permits. Safety should be a top priority for all kayakers, and especially for novices. A kayaking course can be a great way for novices to familiarize themselves with the basics of kayaking, including the best practices in regard to staying safe on the water. Lo-

cal watersports retailers and recreational organizations that take watersports enthusiasts out on the water may offer safety courses, and these courses can be great resources while also helping people get their feet wet before paddling away. When kayaking for the first time, it’s important that novices choose the right type of water for their experience level. Rough, choppy waters can prove challenging to even the most skilled kayakers, and these same waters can be dangerous for novices. The following are some characteristics novice kayakers should look for in a body of water before pushing themselves and their kayakers into the current. • Size: Novices should avoid vast bodies of water, such as oceans, rivers or large lakes, until they gain more experience. Large ponds and small lakes can be great places to gain some experience and familiarize oneself with the nuances of paddling. • Demeanor: Demeanor might not be a trait one normally associates with water, but looking at a body of water in this way can be a great way to determine if it’s the right place for a novice. If a body of water is raging, with choppy waters and rapid waves, then steer clear. If the water is calm, then it’s likely a safe spot for novices. • Traffic: Novices may be intimidated by crowds, but other kayakers can serve as something of a safety net for novices. Kayaking is a fun group activity, and novice paddlers should never go it alone. (Wear a life Jacket!) • Variety: Novices should steer clear of waters that allow power boats. Such vessels can alter paddling conditions quickly, and that can put novices in potentially precarious positions. Stick to waters that allow only canoes or other boats that won’t affect water conditions. • Access: Until they get more comfortable in their kayaks, novice kayakers should stay close to shorelines so they have quick and simple access to land should they struggle to acclimate to the water.Kayaking is a popular activity that even novices can enjoy, especially when they take certain measures to ensure their safety.

The Iona II Steam Launch…and its Engine By Dan Eyring (Editor’s note: In the mid 1980s, the still fledgling Charles River Museum of Industry (CRMI) and Innovation [www.crmii.org] in Waltham, Massachusetts received a sizable donation from the estate of Charles Atwood, a scion of the Atwood and McManus Box Company in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Among the numerous hand tools, machine tools and steam engines in the donation was a Fitzhenry compound steam launch engine, which once powered the steam launch IONA II on Lake Winnipesaukee out of Wolfeboro, NH. This article tells the story of the genesis, operating life and end of the IONA II, as well as how its engine found its way to the Charles River Museum. The author of this article, Dan Eyring, is a member of the Board of

Trustees for the CRMII and is also in charge of maintaining the museum’s collections and exhibits. As the name plate of the IONA II’s steam engine states, it was built in 1900 by the E. L. Fitzhenry Company of Boston, Massachusetts. We know, from observation, that it is an engine type known as a compound steam engine.) By way of explanation, in a compound steam engine, high pressure, high temperature steam from the boiler is expanded in two or more stages or cylinders to more efficiently capture the energy of the steam from the boiler and convert it into work. This made compound engines very popular as marine power sourc-

es, since ships need to carry their own fuel and water. Also, spreading the expansion of the steam across multiple cylinders results in a lower pressure differential in each cylinder, resulting in lighter construction, a good thing on a boat. Finally, a compound engine has a smoother and more continuous power stroke, eliminating the need for a heavy flywheel to maintain a steady power output, also a good thing on a boat, The two small cylinders (in photo at right), one at each end of the engine, are the steam valves, connected to Stephenson valve gear assemblies for reversing the engine’s crankshaft rotation direction. In between, beginning on the right, is the high pressure piston cylinder. High pressure, high temperature steam admitted into the top of this cylinder drives the piston to the bottom of its stroke. The residual steam, now lower in pressure and temperature, is admitted into the top of the low pressure steam cylinder just to the left of the high pressure cylinder. To capture the same amount of work from the steam as was obtained from it in the high pressure cylinder, the low pressure cylinder is of a larger diameter and volume. Finally, the residual steam is passed to the steam condenser located behind the engine and converted to liquid water for re-use in the engine. With the donation of the Fitzhenry engine were two pictures of the IONA II, a postcard profile of the launch and a second view from inside the boat’s engine deck showing both the Fitzhenry engine and its wood clad steam boiler. This would have been the end of what we know about the IONA II and its engine, but for a fortuitous intervention from a gentleman, Richard M. Mitchell, of Hinsdale, NH. Richard Mitchell was a lifetime enthusiast of both steam launch history in New England, and steam launch technology in general. (If you can find a rare copy of his 1982 book, “The Steam Launch”, you will enjoy a great read.) In late 1985 or early 1986, Richard received an appeal for donations

from a new industrial museum in Waltham, Massachusetts. The appeal mentioned the recent donation of the Fitzhenry steam launch engine to the Charles River Museum. Richard knew of the IONA II and its engine. He wrote two letters to Walter Bush and Bud Hansen, the Museum volunteers working on Front View of Fitzhenry Engine. the restoration of the Fitzhenry engine. Those letters filled in the gaps in the story of the IONA II. Richard Mitchell’s IONA II Story Sometime in the late 1890s, the design and manufacture of a Fitzhenry compound steam engine was financed by a prosperous Wolfeboro, NH physician named Bradford. He intended to establish a steamboat passenger and mail delivery service on Lake Winnipesaukee. Bradford and his partners (if any) also financed the construction of the steam launch IONA II, which began passenger and US Mail delivery service in the early 1900s on Lake Winnipesaukee, between Wolfeboro and Alton Bay, that continued for the next two or three decades.

At about the same time, Wolfeboro resident Oscar D. York (1884 - 1960) decided to enter the steam launch business. He had the 60 ft. steam yacht “Columbia” brought to Lake Winnipesaukee by flatcar from the Atlantic coast and began passenger and US Mail service from Wolfeboro in 1905. Skipping ahead to the early 1930s, Charles Atwood, a teenager from Boston, attended a summer camp in Wolfeboro. Born in 1909, Charles Atwood was the scion of the Atwood & McManus Box Company of Chelsea, Massachusetts, founded in 1870. Charles went to work for the family businesses in 1933. While at summer camp in Wolfeboro, Charles often rode around Lake Winnipesaukee on Oscar’s yacht, the Columbia. Oscar, quite a bit older, and the young Charlie, began a lifelong friendship until Oscar’s passing in 1960. Unfortunately, the IONA II sank in shallow water off Oscar York’s dock on Sewall Road in Wolfeboro in 1933. The IONA II sank in shallow water, Oscar York and Charles Atwood decided to salvage the Fitzhenry steam engine, which afterwards resided among the other salvage items on Oscar’s property for some

years. According to Richard Mitchell, the salvaged Fitzhenry steam engine eventually found its way to Charles Atwood’s father’s house in Chelsea. In the yard on the Atwood property, there was a small shop where the IONA II engine along with several other smaller engines including the steam car engines, were stored. Charles Atwood retired from Atwood & McManus in 1954 due to poor health. Over the course of his life, Charles pursued a long lively interest in watch making and steam power. He was especially interested in automotive and marine steam power and he collected a number of small power boat engines and Stanley Steamer engines. After Charles Atwood’s passing in the late 1970s, his widow, Helen Atwood of Winchester, Massachusetts, approached the fledgling and not yet opened Charles River Museum of Industry proposing a sizeable donation of her late husband’s watch and steam power collections, including the IONA II Fitzhenry engine. It had had some restoration work done, but the Museum quickly realized the effort that would be required to bring it into the beautiful condition you can see it today at the CRMII. The restoration work was carried out over six months by Museum volunteers Walter Bush and Bud Hansen, two highly skilled machinists. Walter and Bud spent five hours a week for six months dismantling, cleaning, scraping, painting and polishing the Fitzhenry. Welding and sheet metal work were performed by Artisan Industries of Waltham. Castings of missing or broken parts were made by Somerville High School’s casting shop under the direction of shop manager Francis Gage. And finally, in order to show a working engine, an electric motor was integrated with the Fitzhenry’s drive shaft, so that pistons and valve gear can be seen to operate as though under steam pressure. This is the story of the IONA II steam launch and its Fitzhenry compound steam engine, which plied the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee in the early decades of the 20th century. The Charles River Museum, pandemic allowing, plans to re-open in the fall of 2021. For information, visit www.charlesrivermuseum.org.

An online Launch Appointment Card to be filled out and returned is included for customers to select how they want to receive their boat, whether it be Launched at Lanes End’s docks; Picked up in the boat lot; Or to have it delivered. For a fee, summer trailer storage is offered. Tim said, “Within a week, we received 230 emails from customers requesting services and launch dates. This is how we build our work schedule.” Also included is a Service Work Rate Schedule for 2020-2021 which describes fall and winter services and spring services for 2021. The Service Department (Certified MerCruiser Dealer in Service and Warranty Work) has four trained technicians, and two assistants in the Service Office. In addition to servicing boats and jet skis, there is always someone available at the gas docks. Lanes End, Inc. is a registered online boat agent. Registration instructions are included in their online newsletter. At the first signs of spring, boat owners’ thoughts turn to launching their boats into open waters. Proper steps should be taken to ensure a boat is mechanically ready, as well as the boat’s exterior and interior detailed for the summer ahead. Andrew Swenson, Owner/Operator of Wolfeboro Carwash and Executive Detail (Car and Boat Detailing) explains, “We are not a one-size-fits-all shop. Boats differ in size, age and are manufactured by different companies. Likewise, boat owners differ with their expectations of what they want their boats to look like. Unlike automotive paint, the fiberglass gelcoat on a boat’s exterior is more susceptible to UV damage. Also, the boat’s interior is more affected since much of the time it is open to the elements.” When he looks at the exterior of a boat, Swenson decides whether it is a maintenance job to preserve a new boat, or a restoration/maintenance job. To restore a boat’s gelcoat involves a wet sanding and buffing to bring it back and preserve it for the future. He explains, “What many new boat owners don’t realize is how much maintenance a boat requires in order to keep it looking good and maintain its value for the long term.” Focusing on the maintenance of a boat’s exterior, trained detail specialists at Executive Detail start by acid washing the hull, removing built-up lake scum below the water line. The boat is then washed with a PH-balanced soap, then

rinsed and dried. Interestingly, on new boats straight from the factory some imperfections from the boat mold or during the initial sanding or buffing process may have occurred. If the gelcoat is good, they recommend at minimum a premium gelcoat sealant which lasts the season, or highly recommend a Ceramic coating. These are generally applied professionally, and use a company called Gtechniq. On properly prepped boats up to 5 years-old, Ceramic coating will last about 18 months. On brand new boats with proper preparation and maintenance, this coating will last 2-3 years. Interiors are cleaned from top down, bow to stern. First all loose dirt is removed, and only recommended cleaners are used for that specific surface. For example, the ‘Cool Touch’ vinyl in the newer ski boats can be easily damaged from many of the cleaners used on regular vinyl. With the interior clean it is important to protect the interior fiberglass with a sealant or ceramic coating as with the exterior. To protect vinyl from UV damage, ceramic products for vinyl seats or other conventional products can be used. Glass should be cleaned last and may be coated for easier future cleaning. Swenson also recommends, “Boats should be put away clean. At least wash the hull and remove items from the interior before storing for the winter. We love helping enthusiasts keep their boats well cared for and are here to do the work, if it is beyond what the customer has time for or the expertise themselves!” Melvin Village Marina, 463 Governor Wentworth Hwy, Melvin Village, NH 03850 Service: 603-544-3582, Office: 603-544-3853 or melvinvillagemarina.com Ossipee Location, 801 NH Rt. 16, Ossipee, NH 03864 Erin Donnelly, General Manager and Justin Glidden, Service and Parts Manager. Our Mission:

The day Mylo became a part of our Mandy’s world, her life was forever changed. As a Diabetic Alert Dog, Mylo not only gave her irreplaceable companionship and independence but lifesaving changes as well. She prevented hospitalizations and helped improve Mandy with Mylo her overall health and the quality of her life. Mylo’s presence in Mandy’s life afforded her opportunities that she otherwise never would have known. A portion of each cruise will be put towards a fund with the hopes of providing another girl or boy with diabetes the opportunity to have a Diabetic Alert Dog and change their life forever.

Enjoy a Lakes Region Boat Tour By Sarah Wright As warmer weather hits, the race is on to experience the lakes from a boat. There are local boat tours available each year, but Covid-19 caused cancellations and changes last summer. Fortunately, it’s a new year and things are looking up. Lots of boat rides are being offered again, and there are many options. Even if you own a boat, a local boat tour can give you some interesting information about the history and nature of the area. It’s also a fun idea if you are visiting the Lakes Region or entertaining family and friends locally. Here are some great options. New Hampshire is famous for its picturesque lakes and mountains, and Squam Lake is a gem among many. Take a cruise with the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness and experience the lake’s amazingly clear water, rocky shores, celebrated islands, historic homes, scenic mountain views, and remarkable wildlife. Cruises are 90 minutes long and on canopied pontoon boats. All visitors must wear facemasks and adhere to social distancing guidelines. Children age 12 and under will also be required to wear a life jacket on board. The Science Center offers some exciting cruise options. Learn about

the natural history of Squam Lake, look for majestic Bald Eagles, and listen for the haunting call of Common Loons on the Discover Squam Cruise. On the Bald Eagle Adventure Cruise, a naturalist discusses the recovery of Bald Eagles in the state with particular discussion about these magnificent birds, which have nested on Squam since 2003. The tour route goes to areas where you’re most likely to spot the majestic birds in their natural habitat. Observe Common Loons on the Loon Cruise, with a Loon Preservation Committee (LPC) biologist and Science Center naturalist as they share the latest news about loon conservation, biology, and monitoring. “Cruise with a Naturalist” and learn about the rich natural history of Squam Lake; view nesting sites of Common Loons and Bald Eagles; and watch for other wildlife amid the lake’s charming islands and quiet spots. You never know what you’ll see! Advance reservations are required for these cruises. Call 603-968-7194 or visit www.nhnature. org for the latest information. Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is located on Route 113 in Holderness. Park in the Science Center parking lots and follow the walking path across Route 113 to Lake Cruise Headquarters. Please arrive 15 minutes before your cruise departure time. For many years, the M/S Mount Washington has offered scenic tours and dinner cruises on Lake Winnipesaukee. The historic

ship navigates around many Winnipesaukee islands and through acres of crystal-clear water. Enjoy a narrated tour of the lake, surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in New England, on the Scenic Cruise, a 2.5-hour cruise with lunch service. The Sunset Dinner Cruise is the perfect way to spend a summer evening with loved ones. During this evening excursion, you’ll appreciate the executive chef ’s signature entrées, ambient music, and leisurely tour of the lake, while the crew caters to your service needs. If you’d like to have a close-up view of the islands, reserve a spot on the Sophie C. This U.S. Mailboat navigates smaller channels and waterways to provide postal service to the island residents of Lake Winnipesaukee. On each trip she will visit a number of different islands, and the Skipper will point out areas of interest along the way. And finally, if your time is limited, the Doris E. provides 1-hour scenic tours. During your narrated cruise, you’ll travel to the islands adjacent to Weirs Bay, exploring shallower inlets and coves that cannot be navigated by the larger ship. For tickets and the latest schedule, visit www.cruisenh.com or call 603-366-5531. Passengers will be required to wear facemasks. Lake Winnipesaukee Boat Tours will take you anywhere you want to go on the lake. Captain Bill really knows the water and the interesting information about Winnipesaukee and he can take you to the islands and other areas for an enjoyable day. Commercially licensed and insured, the boat tours offer an unforgettable chance to see the Lakes Region from mid May until foliage season in mid October. Up to 14 passengers can be accommodated on the boat, so call now to reserve at 508-243-8185 or visit www.lakewinnitours.com.

Also in Wolfeboro, the New Hampshire Boat Museum runs cruises in the Millie B, a 28-foot, mahogany, triple cockpit “Woodie.” It’s a replica 1928 Hacker-Craft that’s accurate down to the seat colors. Riding in the Millie B, you can experience the golden age of boating, when wooden boats ruled fresh water lakes. You’ll see spectacular scenery and magnificent homes and boathouses (including the summer home of former governor and presidential candidate Mitt Romney). You might even spot a loon or two at the Loon Sanctuary. During the 45-minute tour, you’ll also hear fascinating stories from your Boat Captain about the lake’s history, geography, geology, and wildlife. Plus you’ll hear about some of the more interesting people who live on the lake. For 2021, The Millie B’s triple cockpit can seat six adults to accommodate physical distancing. Masks are required and life vests will be provided to children under the age of 14. Tickets and departure times are available at www.nhbm.org/millie-b/ or by calling 603-569-4554. Please note that the Millie B doesn’t go out in bad weather such as rain or extremely windy days. If you are traveling from a distance please call the New Hampshire Boat Museum (603-5694554) to make sure the Millie B is operating that day. If you’re in the area of Newfound Lake, sign up for an Ecotour with the Newfound Lake Region Association. You’ll soak in the sights and sounds of this magical place on the two-hour boat tour of Newfound Lake, including historical and ecological narration by experienced tour drivers. (Newfound Lake is known as one of the cleanest lakes in the country.) Tours depart and return from Grey Rocks Conservation Area at 178 North Shore Road in Hebron. Ticket and
