From a Victorian Farmhouse to the World Stage

By Alyson Short There is a silver medal somewhere in Carroll County right now, earned in Philadelphia last month, at the industry’s highest stage, judged blind by 255 experts from 37 countries against more than 8,000 entries— and it belongs to the people who’ve been pouring pints on Route 16 since 2014.

On April 22nd, Hobbs Brewing Company took home a silver medal at the 2026 World Beer Cup, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. Their winning beer, Lodge Life, is a Baltic porter — dark, smooth, and built on notes of milk chocolate and caramel — and it earned its medal in the Strong Porter category against 55 entries from breweries around the globe. Among 8,166 entries from 1,644 breweries, a craft brewery in New Hampshire came home with a podium finish. A well-earned congratulations to Hobbs!

The World Beer Cup, as its participants will tell you without a hint of embarrassment, is the Olympics of beer — a designation that sounds like marketing until you look at what it actually takes to earn a medal in it. Just 353 medals were handed out this year.

The competition has been running for 30 years. It began as a brewer-led effort to celebrate the art and science of brewing and is now widely considered the most prestigious beer competition in the world. And Lodge Life, a winter seasonal, released each year when the lakes go quiet and the wood stoves

earn their keep, landed among the best Strong Porters entered anywhere in the world.

If you’ve driven Route 16 with any regularity, you know the building: the 1885 Victorian farmhouse on the west side of the highway, at 2415 White Mountain Highway in West Ossipee. It was built by the Hobbs family, whose roots in this corner of New Hampshire run deep. Nathaniel Hobbs, a captain in

the Revolutionary War, is said to have sold his own North Hampton farmland to pay the soldiers under his command.

When the war was over, Nathaniel settled his family in what is now Effingham, and the building Hobbs now calls home was built in 1885 by OP Hobbs.

Three partners, including Rob Finneron and Ash Fischbein, whose friendship dates back to 2001, took on the full renovation of that farmhouse in 2014

and opened Hobbs Tavern & Brewing Company in April of that year, with a kitchen, a restaurant, and a vision for a brewpub that honored the building. By August, a 7-barrel brewhouse was operational on site, and Hobbs beers were flowing from tank to tap. By 2016, a canning line was in place and self-distribution had begun throughout New Hampshire. That same year, the team earned a bronze at the Great American Beer Festival for One Arm Farmhouse Ale — silver the following year for the same beer — and it became clear this was not a place content to stay small.

In the fall of 2020, a second, larger production facility opened eleven miles south at 765 Route 16 in Ossipee: a 9,000 square-foot building housing a 15-barrel brewhouse, with the capacity to produce 15,000 barrels of beer, and an adjacent taproom. Today, Hobbs beers are distributed across New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine — and now, apparently, recognized on the world stage.

Hobbs Tavern is the original, and remains the heart of the operation. The menu is elevated comfort food: signature wings, fresh burgers, house-made meatloaf, with nearly every item available gluten-free — and the beers on tap are brewed steps away in the onsite 7-barrel brewhouse. Hobbs Taproom to 8 pm: local produce, flowers, crafts, and vendors worth browsing. Food truck festivals, live music, plant expos, cornhole tournaments, and seasonal events fill out the calendar through the warmer months. The space includes cozy indoor seating, an expansive patio and outdoor area, and a large event tent. The cumulative effect is of a place that has figured out how to be useful to the people around it – including a ‘Beer it Forward’ board, where you can buy a beer for a friend, a stranger, comrade, or kindred spirit – and allow it to be discovered by a pleasantly surprised recipient (or you may be lucky enough to discover one for yourself!) Without a kitchen at the taphouse, visitors are treated to a rotating collection of food trucks or in-house vendors.

What Hobbs has built here is easy to take for granted, precisely because they’ve built it so steadily and without a great deal of fanfare. It isn’t just a brewery and taphouse; it is infrastructure for the community. A historic property that could have sat vacant or been subdivided has been turned into a destination — two destinations, really — that people drive to specifically.

Together, the Tavern and Tap House have created jobs, drawn visitors off the highway, added events to the local calendar, and given residents a place worth going on a Tuesday night. Their beers now appear in markets and bars across three states, carrying the name of Ossipee with them – along with a family name tied to the founding era of this state. Visitors who might have kept driving have stopped, stayed, and returned.

For those looking to host something,

all three spaces are available for private events: intimate dinners at the Tavern, larger gatherings in the Hayloft, and full buyouts of the Tap Room facility, complete with patios and tent.

Rehearsal dinners, graduation parties, client appreciations, the Cupid Project, family reunions, beer-pairing dinners — even yoga — they’ve hosted all of it, and they know how to do it well.

As for the silver medal winner, Lodge Life: it releases each winter, passing the torch in spring and summer to its counterpart, Lake Life Pale Ale, which feels like a conversation between the two sides of life up here, cold and warm, lodge and lake. Both are available at all Hobbs locations and through distribution partners across the region.

The silver medal is new. The commitment to this place has been there for over ten years. It’s a pleasure to watch the rest of the world notice.

Believe in Books Sunset Concert Series Returns for 2026

Tiny Art Show Returns to Artworks Chocorua ArtWorks Gallery is very proud to present TINY ART again this May at our Gallery, 132 White Mt. Hwy (RT 16) in Chocorua. It is with great pleasure that we present the works of Tamworth K.A. Brett School students who, wielding brushes, have created another exhibit to wow you.

Students’ 3” X 3” canvases will be on display and for sale through May, along with the work of our 30+ member artists. This is an opportunity for budding artists to introduce themselves to the world of exhibition and experience the thrill of working with established artists and artisans in a Gallery setting. Exhibiting for the first time is a monumental leap of faith and trust. We look forward to celebrating this mo-

The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation has announced the return of its popular 2026 Sunset Concert Series, a ten-week lineup of live outdoor performances held every Friday from June 26 through August 28 at the Theater in the Wood (41 Observatory Way, Intervale).

Showcasing a wide range of musical styles—from reggae and rock to high-energy tribute acts—the family-friendly series invites audiences to enjoy live entertainment in a scenic woodland setting while supporting regional literacy initiatives. The Lost Community of Redstone

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Located in the Mount Washington Valley, Redstone was once a thriving community with a church, storage buildings, a school, a railroad station, a post office, and houses for workers.

Why were people living in Redstone, an offshoot community of Conway?

Redstone was a quarry and employed over 300 men in its heyday. In the March 21, 1929 issue of the Reporter (newspaper), it was written that Redstone Quarry was purchased in 1886 and by 1929 was “the largest industry in the town.” Thus, it was a busy place in its prime (until the 1940s); it even had a stage for musical and theatrical shows, a post office, and zip code, according to information at the Conway Public Library. There were about 40 houses, and people from other parts of the Conway area attended the church near the quarry.

Although Redstone was an unincorporated community, it was well respected, known for its quarry of “red” granite, which was mined at the location.

Today, the area where the quarry was located has a ghost-town feel, with cellar holes and traces of the quarry, nostalgic proof of its once busy place in the Conway region.

The history of Redstone is fascinating. The Redstone Granite Quarry was located at the foot of Rattlesnake Mountain and began operation in the 1800s, before finally closing in the 1940s. At one time, it was a thriving business, and many in the area were employed there. An article in the May 17, 1934 issue of the Reporter newspaper relayed that workers of all nationalities were employed at Redstone.

Labor troubles were less prevalent than at other such places, and although unionized, the quarry was a good place to work.

The article went on to say that the Depression years were hurting the quarry’s business, and along with it, the need for stone cutters who had been employed there. Orders dropped off as the economy suffered.

In its heyday, the quarry had two types of stone - pink and green granite – plentiful or, as a newspaper article said, “inexhaustible.” The stone was desirable and used to build many New England homes and monuments. At one time, monuments were very popular to honor political leaders and soldiers in conflicts such as the Civil War. The pink stone was also referred to as “redstone” and known to be remarkable for its rich color and its opalescent crystals of feldspar. Redstone seemed to have everything: it was easily quarried and sawn, took a high polish, and was adaptable for many uses.

According to “Redstone Granite Quarries” by Steve Swenson and Rick Russack (www.whitemountainhistory. org), the quarry is one of the most interesting industrial archeological sites in the state. Imagine a quarry with wires, cables, large coal-fired boilers, and air compressors. Pipes and even railroad tracks were needed for transporting heavy granite stones from the quarries to the stone yard and storage sheds for processing.

In the Reporter newspaper’s March 21, 1929 issue, a front-page story told readers that a large fire at Redstone “amounted to a $200,000 loss.” A large shed was over 5,300 feet in length but was razed by the fire.

Central Railroad, which transported raw materials and other supplies and finished stone to and from the quarry area.

The Redstone Granite Quarry holds hints and traces of its once great industry. The quarry began when the railroad started in the area, and after a fire burned the mountain and wiped out the rattlesnake population. (Lest there is any confusion, there were indeed rattlesnakes in New Hampshire, and the venom of the snakes was extracted for medicinal purposes.)

A road was first made into the area in the 1760s. The fire that wiped out the rattlesnakes exposed the mountainside.

At that time, it became obvious there was granite in abundance and there were four quarries being worked in the area by the early 1900s.

Once the Maine Central line of railroad came into the region, a stop at Redstone was added. This was because the quarry had orders for many projects. In the 1860s, bridges were being built across the country and granite was needed for stone abutments. The granite had good splitting qualities and Redstone became the Main and New Hampshire Granite Company with a railroad station built in the 1880s.

With so many skilled men hired and needing lodgings in Redstone, a store and homes and a school and post office were added. Some of the quarry workers were very skilled and came from European areas such as Italy.

They brought their families with them, and this swelled the Redstone population, making the offshoot community of Conway/North Conway its own village.

A church was also built, and a tenement and a large boarding house were erected. One house, named the Schooler, housed over 70 men. The owners of the quarry gave employees just about everything they could need, and the boarding house rental fee was taken out of the pay of workers for room and board.

By the late 1880s, around 300 men worked at Redstone, and they pulled and shipped many railroad cars of granite daily.

Religious worship was very important to communities in the 1800s and Redstone was no different. In an August 1899 issue of the White Mountain Reporter newspaper, it was written that “quite a number attended church at Redstone on July 30th. They thought that they were quite fortunate to go that day, as they had a chance to attend a wedding.”

Socializing of employees living in Redstone was also important and the community even had its own town news section in the White Mountain Reporter. One piece told of an event at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gervasi. It was the scene of a pleasant surprise party, when their host of friends from Redstone and vicinity presented them with an elegant dinner and a tea set. Present at the celebration was Mr. I. V. Pert, who was held in high esteem among Redstone residents. Pert was beloved and was likely an overseer of the works.

Green granite was good for being highly polished and could be turned on a lathe. A boiler room produced steam to operate machinery at the quarry, and there were two large steam engines.

The railroad cars were used to ship the desired granite; today, traces of the train tracks can still be seen. The granite was used all over the country, and some of it was used for part of Grant’s Tomb, as well as in national and local bridges. Red granite was also used in • Yesteryear continued on page 11

NH Moose Hunt Lottery Open for Entry New Hampshire’s 2026 moose hunt lottery is open. Enter today for your chance at the adventure of a lifetime— hunting moose in the rugged woods of the Granite State. The lottery entrance fee is $15 for Granite State residents and $25 for nonresidents.

Visit www.wildlife.nh.gov/hunting-nh/moose-hunting-new-hampshire where you can enter the New Hampshire moose hunt lottery online or print out a mail-in application. You can also pick up an application at any Fish and Game license agent, New Hampshire Fish and Game Department headquarters, or at Fish and Game regional offices.

Moose hunt lottery applications for 2026 must be postmarked or submitted online by midnight Eastern Standard Time on Friday, May 29. Applications can also be dropped off at New Hampshire Fish and Game Department headquarters, 11 Hazen Drive, Concord, NH, before 4 pm. Winners will be selected through a random computerized drawing and announced on June 19.

Applicants can enter the moose hunt lottery once per year. A bonus-point system improves the chances for unsuccessful applicants who apply in each consecutive year or those who wish to accrue a point but not enter this year’s lottery. One point is earned for each year, and each point translates to a

chance in the drawing. As an example, last year the overall odds of a resident applicant being drawn were 1 in 110, and resident applicants with a total of 22 points had a 1 in 36 chance of being drawn. For nonresidents, the odds were 1 in 500 overall and 1 in 169 for applicants with 22 points.

In 2025, 5,968 people entered the lottery for the chance to win one of 33 permits. In addition, 1,188 people continued to accrue bonus points because they submitted an application for a point only to hold their already accrued points. Hunters from five other states won permits in the 2025 lottery.

While people travel from all over the country to take part in the New Hampshire moose hunt, the majority of permits, almost 85%, are awarded to Granite State residents. The number of permits available to nonresidents is capped, based on the prior year’s sales of nonresident hunting licenses.

“Moose lottery permit numbers for 2026 will be the same as 2025,” said Moose Project Leader Henry Jones.

“Your chance of being drawn and offered a permit in the lottery will be improved if you rank all wildlife management units on your application. You will then have the option to decline a permit if you are drawn for a unit you would prefer not to hunt in.”

other businesses, it managed to survive the financially difficult times, and workers were still employed, but by the 1940s, the writing was on the wall. Granite was not used as often, being replaced by other kinds of stone and concrete. Also, a great deal of the Redstone granite had been taken from the mountain area by the time of World War II. Eventually, the business closed, leaving behind some of the structures and heavy machinery that once were used at the quarry.

Although of a ghost town feeling, in many ways, Redstone lives on in the memories of people in the Conway area. In addition, some of the Redstone area buildings and homes remain and are well-remembered.

For readers who are interested in seeing the remains of Redstone, on Wednesday, July 15, from 4 - 5 pm, Bob Cottrell of the Conway Public Library will lead a tour of the historic Redstone Quarry. Bob will highlight the interpretive signage created by the library, sharing insights into the landmarks and artifacts that remain on the property.

One can imagine the families once living in company homes. They likely brought the cultures of their origins from Europe, such as food and religion, enriching the community. Children from these families attended a school in the Redstone village, and a store owned by the quarry company offered food and other items. Workers who did not live in Redstone came from the surrounding Conway area.

The work was hard, starting in the early morning and when orders were heavy, the men worked long hours.

Tips for Turkey Hunters on Building Good Landowner Relations Spring turkey season (May 1–31) is here, and hunters on a quest for gobblers can do a lot to help promote positive landowner relations, according to Mark Beauchesne, Landowner Relations Coordinator for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. “Remember while you are scouting that access to private land is a privilege provided through the generosity of the landowner,” said Beauchesne. “With more than 70% of New Hampshire’s land in private ownership, practicing good landowner relations is key to maintaining access to private property now and for future generations.”

Here are some tips: Even if you had landowner permission to hunt or scout last year, check back in with property owners to discuss the spring hunting season dates and to make sure nothing has changed over the winter.

• Remember that you are the guest of the landowner. Treat their property with the same care and respect that you would if it were your own.

• Never park on lawns or block roadways, trails, crossings, or gates.

Leave all gates and barriers as you

found them.

• Written landowner permission is needed to drive an OHRV on private property. If you are granted permission, understand clearly where you are allowed to drive and carry proof of permission on your person.

• Become familiar with boundaries of the land you have permission to hunt, surrounding properties, and adjacent recreation areas, farms, and active logging operations.

• Do not hunt near buildings, livestock, active logging operations, or hiking trails.

• Make an effort to express your appreciation to the landowner. Follow up with a note of thanks, a small token of appreciation, or offer up assistance with a task or chore. Your ongoing communication with landowners makes a world of difference.

Belleau Lake: A Quiet Vision Turned Lakeside Haven

By Mike Moore The little Lakes Region town of Wakefield sits right on the border of Maine, with many lakes, rivers, and streams converging through the village that sits just off of Route 16, right before the White Mountains turn from scenic vista to reality. With a town village that is so quaint and historic, visitors feel like they’re in a Thomas Kinkade painting, and the surrounding forests, lakes, and scenic roads help make Wakefield one of the most tranquil and beautiful places to vacation or reside. During the summer months in particular, the seven lakes all have their unique qualities and fun to be had, whether it be kayaking, fishing, or going for a swim.

It was the abundance of water outlets that led to the town’s settlement in the early 1700s, as during the revolutionary days, water sources were vital to a village’s survival. By halfway through the century, the burgeoning industries of farming and logging were starting to flourish in Wakefield, with sawmills and grist mills finding success utilizing the waters of what was then known as Lovewell’s Pond, now Lovell Lake, to power the operations. Modernization throughout the 1800s resulted in the small pockets of villages dotted throughout the area to grow, particularly along the shores of Great East Lake, Province Lake, and Pine River Pond.

Industry had been booming, but by the latter part of the century, the tourism industry was expanding in Wakefield year after year. With the Boston and Maine railroad adding a stop in Sanbornville, and the invention of the automobile, visitors flocked to this little jewel nestled in the eastern side of the Lakes Region. One such vacationer, Ernest Belleau Jr., a successful real estate developer from Salem, Massachusetts, enjoyed the little oasis so much that he made the move to the Granite State around the time the Vietnam War

was happening, in 1969.

Belleau built homes throughout the suburbs of Boston starting back in the 1930s, totaling over 450 properties throughout Massachusetts, before moving up to Wakefield full-time in 1969. Belleau had always enjoyed the outdoors, particularly fishing and hunting, so falling in love with the lakes and mountains here was all but a certainty. The particular area he went to was East Wakefield, where he started a new development business called the Belleau Lake Corp. His goal wasn’t to just start developing countless plots and crowd the shorelines of all the lakes with homes. He wanted to develop the ideal spot to enjoy his quiet and peaceful pastimes. In partnership with the town of Wakefield, the Belleau Lake Corp established a long-form plan that would create a manmade lake through the process of damming the Little Ossipee River, which allowed the flooding water to rise to the level where it could connect several nearby unnamed ponds into one reservoir. After the meticulous and lengthy process was complete, Belleau Lake turned out to be quite the watershed. It spans 187 acres, with 18 miles of shoreline to enjoy. This interconnection of ponds, rivers, and streams wouldn’t be able to stay connected with the flatter terrain that they flow through, so the use of a dam helps keep water levels maintained. Currently, a dam allows water

to flow through Woodman Lake and Balch Lake.

Sitting right above Sand Pond and Stump Pond, the manufactured body of water would quickly start seeing houses pop up. With easy access from Rte. 16, Belleau would oversee the sale of over 200 lots at the new destination spot for lake life. To encourage his fellow anglers to make Belleau Lake their vacation destination or home, he stocked the lake with a variety of bass and perch, doing so continually for over a decade. Belleau Lake remains one of the top spots in the Lakes Region for fishing today.

For those seeking out the warm community vibes that our neck of the woods is known for, but don’t want the hustle and excitement that comes with the bigger lakes, Belleau Lake has and continues to be the consummate option for those seeking out a quieter and more peaceful time during their summer vacation. Though much of the lake is privately owned, there are several vacation homes both on and off the water that have only grown in popularity as the years go by. The Belleau Lake House is situated on one of the premier locations of the lake, and visitors can book a short stay at this four-bedroom lakeside haven, or if booking in advance through their website, can aim to soak up the sun for a while longer.

The lake is as smooth as glass, making for a perfect day of lazy floating out on

the water or sunbathing on the sandy beaches. Kayaking and canoeing are popular with all the residents, and the 3 miles of lake give everyone plenty of opportunity to get out and explore.

For this Northern New England community to continually be the quiet, picturesque oasis that Ernie Belleau had in mind nearly 60 years ago, it takes a strong organization like the Belleau Lake Property Owners Association to preserve and maintain the environment, the beauty, and the spirit. Formed in 1981, the nonprofit has been responsible for the roads, beaches, and boat launches in the area. Privacy is offered all throughout, but perhaps the association’s best amenity is their island just off the shore that can be accessed by boat or by foot bridge. They offer residents plenty of guidance on safety on the lake and in the surrounding woods, of course, but they aren’t your typical homeowner’s association. Their mission is to “endeavor to protect the area in such a way to assure water quality and safety for our residents and those downstream from us”. In addition to preserving the environment, the association strongly believes in maintaining the peaceful and safe ambiance that Belleau had in mind when he dreamt up his idea for a manmade lake.

Sometimes the best summer vacations are full of relaxation and ease rather than having every minute scheduled with excitement. For Ernie Belleau Jr. and the hundreds of former and current residents of the Belleau Lake community, there are few places to be found that still uphold the pristine, natural beauty that the Lakes Region has to offer. With the property owners’ association determined to remain environmentally conscious and to provide the utmost community care, Belleau Lake will continue to be a shining example of how you can still capture the simple, serene spirit of days past.

Fresh Happenings are Sprouting Author Jeffrey Ryan presents “Building Thoreau’s Cabin” at Gafney at Remick The Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm in Tamworth, New Hampshire—a nationally recognized living history site dedicated to preserving over 200 years of rural New England life and the legacy of country doctors— has a full slate of seasonal, hands-on programming scheduled for May. The Gafney Library(14 High Street, Sanbornville) will be hosting Jeffrey Ryan, who will present “Building Thoreau’s Cabin,” on Tuesday, May 19, at 6 pm in their Community Room. Ryan, who is a Maine author and Parsonfield neighbor, recently built a replica of Henry David Thoreau’s house to become his writing studio, fulfilling a 50-plus-year dream. His appreciation for Thoreau began when, at age thirteen, his mother handed him her own childhood copy of Walden.

Right away, Ryan latched onto the idea of following Thoreau’s lead and building a cabin in the woods someday. Over the decades, the idea of “a cabin” took many forms, but in 2022, he had a revelation to build “a Thoreau cabin.” His research led him to obtain blueprints from The Thoreau Society, and in August 2024, he began building a structure modeled after

the original and built almost exclusively using hand tools. Ryan’s cabin has been featured in The New York Times and Maine Boats, Homes and Harbors magazine.

In this presentation, Ryan will share the steps he took to build the cabin, delve deeper into the reasons he built it, and discuss the unexpected lessons he learned along the way. He will also have many of his books available for purchase and signing.

Presenter Jeffrey Ryan is a Maine author, conservation historian, and speaker.

He has written seven professionally published books and produced two documentary films about conservation pioneers. A popular presenter, he holds the record for appearances at the National Conservation Training Center (home of the US Fish and Wildlife Service) and has appeared in venues covering 38 states.

Hobbs Brewing Company Awarded Silver at 2026 World Beer Cup Yoga by the Creek Available All Hobbs Brewing Company was awarded a silver award in the 2026 World Beer Cup, the most prestigious beer competition in the world. The award ceremony took place on April 22, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, where awards were given in 114 style categories and five cider categories.

Hobbs was awarded a silver award in the Strong Porter beer style category for Lodge Life, a Baltic Porter. Lodge Life is a smooth and creamy dark lager, characteristic of the style, and boasts notes of milk chocolate and caramel. Summer in Portsmouth This summer, Yoga in Action is turning over a new leaf with an exciting update to its seasonal programming.

After many cherished seasons of hosting Yoga in the Park, the organization is relocating its weekly noontime class to a new setting: its home base at the historic Carey Cottage (400 Little Harbor Rd, Portsmouth), a serene property overlooking Sagamore Creek.

Surrounded by natural beauty, with nearby walking trails and water just steps away, the new location offers an inviting space to slow down, breathe deeply, and enjoy a more immersive midday reset. The reimagined offering, now called “Yoga by the Creek,” encourages participants to not only attend class but also linger afterward—whether for a peaceful stroll or an afternoon

on the water with a kayak or paddleboard.

Classes will be held every Tuesday from 12 to 1 pm, beginning June 2 and running through August 25. While the setting may be new, the essence of the experience remains unchanged: a welcoming, all-levels class designed to foster connection, presence, and community.
