Hiking Mount Doublehead: The Way Up Is Up To You

By Tom Caldwell Mount Doublehead, a twin-peaks mountain in the eastern White Mountains, offers views of fields and mountains that have inspired many local artists to try and capture the wonder of the scene. Located in the town of Jackson, the trails to the summit are steep but not long, and those who have hiked them say they are well worth the time and effort to get there.

The two main trails are known as Old Path and the Doublehead Ski Trail. New Path is a third, longer route, leading to South Doublehead, but most hikers take the ski trail from the parking lot off Dundee Road, heading for North Doublehead.

The Doublehead Ski Trail gains 1,600 feet of elevation and is classified as moderate to difficult because of the steady, steep grade and narrow, twisting sections, obstructed by rocks, roots, and occasional blowdowns.

The ski trail forks after 1.2 miles, with the Old Path taking an easterly route until it meets New Path and curves north in the saddle between the two peaks. The ski trail, meanwhile, continues north, curving around from the north and approaching North Doublehead from the other direction, with a cabin available by reservation with the Saco District Ranger Station in Conway.

The Civilian Conservation Corps built the log cabin on the summit of Mount Doublehead in 1934 as it was developing backcountry ski trails in the

area to promote winter sports amidst the growing popularity of downhill skiing during the Great Depression.

The log cabin originally served as a warming hut for the skiers.

The 1.8-mile Doublehead Ski Trail from Jackson to the summit of North Doublehead was built by the CCC, with a vertical drop of 1,573 feet, with moderate grades and gentle turns to facilitate skiing without excessive steepness. The cabin at the top was situated to provide panoramic views of the Presidential Range.

The US Forest Service has managed the log cabin since its completion.

Today, the cabin has bunk beds to accommodate as many as eight persons in four rooms, as well as a central gathering place with two small tables, benches, and a wood stove for heating. Visitors must bring their own water, along with bedding, cooking gear, food, trash bags, and firewood.

Although there is no running water or plumbing, there is an outhouse a short

distance from the cabin.

While the other ski trails built by the CCC became commercial operations over the years, the Doublehead Ski Trail has remained primitive, and it has adapted to hiking as well as skiing.

Those “moderate grades” that appeal to cross-country skiers are somewhat more difficult for hikers, who are required to do some minor scrambling to ascend over the rock-strewn trail.

If the Doublehead Ski Trail is challenging, the Old Path actually has steeper sections, gaining 1,200 feet as it makes its way between the two peaks. However, that route is most noted for its scenic beauty. It allows hikers to connect with the New Path, which extends 1.2 miles to South Doublehead, providing an additional 1,350 feet of gain on its initial steep section before descending a mile back to Dundee Road.

Depending upon the route chosen, the loop along the Doublehead Ski Trail, Old Path, and New Path covers

3.6 to 5.1 miles, with elevation gains of 1,637 to 1,770 feet. South Doublehead reaches a height of 2,939 feet above sea level, while the summit of North Doublehead is at 3,051 feet.

Those moderate-to-strenuous trails pass through mixed forests to open ledges that provide panoramic views of the Presidential Range, Mount Washington, the Moat Range, and the White Mountains of Maine.

From the South peak, views include the Attitash ski area and Kearsarge North. The North peak offers eastern outlooks toward Mountain Pond and Maine’s lowlands.

An alternative access point is by way of the Eastman Brook Trailhead, which makes a 5.1-mile round-trip route with 1,637 feet of elevation gain. That trail is rated moderate and travels through the Squam Range.

While its eastern and southern slopes feed the east branch of the Saco River, its northwestern slopes feed into Great Brook and Wildcat Brook, ultimately reaching the Ellis River and the main stem of the Saco River.

The earliest recorded use of the Mount Doublehead name seems to have been in the 19th century, when European settlers began arriving in the White Mountains and clearing the land for farms and logging operations, and later for tourism. The first towns in the area formed after the French and Indian War ended in 1763, with other settlers slowly arriving after that.

By the first quarter of the 19th century, there were many small towns, including the town of Adams, incorporated on December 4, 1800, and named in honor of President John Adams. In 1829, with only one vote to retain its original name, residents renamed the town in response to the

election of President Andrew Jackson, known as the hero of the Battle of New Orleans. Adams became Jackson.

Jackson became one of the earliest summer resorts and attracted such artists as William Boardman, John Geary, C. Myron Clark, and Albert Gallatin Hoit to the White Mountains.

Tourism really took off after Joshua B. Trickey opened the Jackson Falls House in 1858, followed by other lodging establishments and the arrival of the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad in the early 1870s.

With the advent of ski tourism, Mount Doublehead grew in popularity and, in 1934, the American composer Alan Hovhaness wrote a piano piece, “Fog on Mount Double Head” (Op. 1, movement 2 of the Suite).

The Doublehead Trailhead has parking for 3-5 vehicles. From Route 16, take Route 16A into Jackson village, then Route 16B (Black Mountain Road) for about two miles, continuing straight onto Dundee Road.

Summer Fun in Days of Old

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper In the early 1900s, summer activities were more sedate than today, but still, there was plenty to do.

In the Conway area of the White Mountains, daily life meant hard work, socializing in a more genteel manner than we experience today, and many ways to enjoy the season of summer.

These events were reported in the town’s weekly newspapers, and the public was always eager for stories big and small.

As summer got into full swing, life in the North Conway/Conway area saw children out of school for a few months and locals catering to the tourists who were beginning to discover the joys of a White Mountain vacation.

In the July 14, 1898, summer season, such simple pleasures as the Sterling Literary Circle reported to have met on July 5, with the subject of witchcraft being discussed. Other readings were offered at the meeting, and a “delicious tea” was served to the enjoyment of all who attended.

In the July 4, 1940, issue of the (North Conway) Reporter, a story of note was the announcement that the “Skimobile Announces Summer Schedule” at Cranmore in North Conway. The exciting Cranmore Skimobile was set to

run from July through October, with an increasing number of summer visitors enjoying the installation.

Summertime has always meant swimming for kids who are on vacation, and a front-page story in the July 4, 1940, Reporter was headlined “Swimming Project Started.” It reported that “despite cold, wind, and rain, the swimming project opened,” that week to about 30 youngsters. The project was set up to teach kids how to swim, and it also tested their skills in the water.

In the July 1949 issue of the Reporter, many activities were offered to readers, such as the informative film/program titled “Quest for Talkative Fish” to be shown in Jackson. The program was billed as a chance to see a Moody Bible Institute science film featuring “underwater sounds – never before heard by human ears.” The film was shown at the Jackson Community Center.

In South Tamworth, the newspaper informed that the Methodist Youth Caravan was in town from July 23 to 31 with four young college students and counselors working with young people. There would be a recreation hour, handicraft time, and an hour of Bible study. Everyone was “cordially invited to attend these services.”

Many people were interested in arts and crafts, and summertime was the season when creative people opened their studios to the public. Artists and craftsmen gathered to socialize and share their work and ideas. In July 1947, a League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts Woodworking Guild held a meeting at the shop of artisan Mr. Woodard in Intervale with a good attendance. The meeting covered methods and means for woodworking, and Mr. Woodward displayed and explained his work. A box lunch was provided, and in the afternoon, David R. Campbell, the director of the League in Concord, offered a program. Mrs. Cecil Hinman brought along an outstand-

ing display of hand-carved trays. After the meeting, the group adjourned to the League Shop in North Conway for an open house and tea, which was a celebrated annual event.

Summer camp was offered in 1940 for local boys and girls via the Carroll County 4-H Club, when a trip was scheduled to the 4-H Bear Hill Pond Camp in Bear Brook Reservation, Allenstown, New Hampshire.

The week of July 21, 1949, offered a lot of entertainment, such as the Bartlett Playhouse with an 8:15 pm showing of Mother Is a Freshman starring Van Johnson and Loretta Young. Also • Yesteryear continued on page 9

Old-fashioned dances were advertised in the Reporter with Turgeon’s Orchestra at Harmony Acres in the Conway area. The dances were popular in the summer months and were held each Saturday evening.

Those who were hankering after a treat could stop at Morrell’s Eastern Slope Ice Cream for a Lemon Sherbert or 12 other “delicious flavors” at the shop just one mile south of North Conway.

In late summer of 1912, several front-page stories in local newspapers brought local entertainment to the public. On the front page of the Reporter of August/early Sept., one could read about a “Baseball Double Header” which would be played at the Conway Athletic Park. The competition would see Conway vs. Limerick teams, with the Conway Brass Band playing music. It was advertised that the sporting event and music would be among the last of the season and surely not something to miss. Added to this, fireworks and a band concert would take place as summer ended at Peg Mill Bridge at 7 pm.

Young people were the focus of summer and fall events for Conway-area boys. Bartlett took up their “season’s work” with 40 boys at a meeting led by school principal Mr. Collins. County Secretary Roberts taught the boys some new group games.

The Union Boys, according to the same article, had a meeting and planned their programs for Scouting and special meetings in the church on Sunday evenings.

Fast-forward to July of 1950 and the Barnstormers, New Hampshire’s Oldest Summer Theatre in Tamworth, opened its 20th season with “The Ghost Train”. The price for seats was $1.00 to $1.75.

In July of 1950, vacationers and locals could sit at the soda fountain of the Eastern Slope Pharmacy and enjoy a Fresh Strawberry Sundae for a mere 18 cents. An ad in the Reporter urged readers to stop by, because the pharmacy offered Sealtest Ice Cream, the finest quality ice cream syrups, and of course, popular low prices.

The 1950s were the age of drive-in movie theatres, and the White Mountain Drive-In advertised such films as My Little Chickadee with Mae West and W.C. Fields, Young Man With a Horn starring Cary Grant and Myrna Loy, and Captain Carey – USA with Alan Ladd. In the summer, gates opened at 7 pm, and the movies began at dusk.

As summer ended, vacationers and locals may have been sad to say a farewell to the warm weather season in the Conway area. But the Wednesday evening semi-weekly dances given by the Imperial Orchestra at the Conway-area Masonic Hall would offer something entertaining to pacify. The season ended with a thrilling and lively dance known as a grand hop. The orchestra increased to 12 players, and the event would run from 9 pm to 1:30 am.

All proceeds will go to the Gafney Library.

Making Quality Spirits at Cathedral Ledge Distillery

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Working in and owning a distillery is a long way from a career in finance and economics. But that distance is just how Christoper Burk, the co-owner of Cathedral Ledge Distillery, with his wife, Tracy, like it. While understanding the economics of running a business is very helpful, it also takes a certain skill set to set up and open a distillery that meets quality standards. That is what the Burks have accomplished at Cathedral Ledge Distillery, located at 3340 White Mountain Highway in North Conway.

Says Christoper, “We wanted to make organic spirits for a few reasons.

We wanted to be sustainable and organic and produce high-quality products. This is mostly because we have a respect for the health of farmers that grow the grains we use.”

The Burks are aware that the health of conventional farmers can be adversely affected by the chemicals they use on their crops. As the owners of Cathedral Ledge Distillery, the couple want to avoid that by supporting organic grains, grown without chemicals. “Our organic spirits have been well received by our customers,” Christopher says, and he feels his distillery is on the right track with quality spirits and respect for farmers and the environment.

Organic farming requires much more forethought and is inherently better for the environment, as it improves soil quality, pollinator habitat, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration while reducing fossil fuel use, erosion, and chemical runoff.

There are far fewer suppliers of certified organic grains and botanicals, underscoring the importance of working closely with our farm partners.

The business opened in December of 2020, and Christopher says he had not produced spirits before that time but had a desire to learn. He prepared by doing “a ton of reading about distilled spirits and how to set up the equipment needed for the process.”

He also toured many distilleries and credits the owners for their openness in sharing their expertise and answering his questions.

When the Burks moved forward, the first thing they did was construct

the distillery building, which sits on land in North Conway. “The distillery has timber frame construction and was built specifically for our needs,” Christopher explains. There was a lot to the process, such as installing four underground tanks. The structure is also 100 percent solar. “It took four years to plan and build,” he adds.

Information on the website shares that small family-owned farms used to be ubiquitous in New England.

Sadly, seeing one today is a rare treat.

have a traditional timber frame barn built to house the operation, much like the ones that housed the first stills in America. “We cherish the opportunity to work directly with the farmers that grow our grains and botanicals and recycle our production waste back into the ecosystem.”

“I did a lot of research, and we did most of the set-up, but some parts required licensed professionals, such as the boiler installation by steam fitters.

I really wanted to know the business from the ground up,” Christopher adds.

Part of Christopher’s research required finding great farming partners, and he located several throughout New Hampshire, Maine, and New York.

They produce the organic grains used at Cathedral Ledge Distillery: corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley.

“Our spirits are all grain-based,” Christopher says. “We produce whiskeys, gins, maple liqueur, and vodkas. We do not use artificial flavors, colors, preservatives or sweeteners.”

This results in pure, tasty spirits that customers love.

Rochester Main Street Announces 2026 Kids Summer Series Rochester Main Street is excited to announce the return of the Kids Summer Series, a free family-friendly event series bringing games, activities, vendors, and downtown fun to Rochester throughout the summer.

The 2026 Kids Summer Series is organized

by Rochester Main Street and made possible through the generous support of community partners. Fidium Fiber is the event sponsor for this year’s series, and Sage’s Entertainment is serving as the Presenting Partner, helping add even more fun and excitement to the events.

The Kids Summer Series will take place on July 18, July 25, August 15, and August 19, with each event featuring its own theme, including Teddy Bear Picnic, Bubble Bash, Carnival of Smiles, Dinosaur Day, and Legends & Little Monsters.

Each event will include a variety of vendors, games, activities, and much more. Guyer Travel will also be joining Rochester Main Street at each event, collecting backpack supplies to support local students while bringing additional fun for families.

“Last year we saw between 50–75 families, and hope to see even more

this year,” said Rochester Main Street’s Events Committee Chair Mandie Smith. “Bringing families downtown for free fun is not only the right thing to do, it helps get people downtown exploring the downtown businesses.”

• Distillery continued from page 11 organic ingredients, we use traditional craft distilling techniques. Our whiskeys are twice distilled in a pot still - no columns, thumpers, or coldfiltering - and aged in 53-gallon White American Oak barrels in our barns.

Our vodka (which also serves as the base of our gins and liqueur) is finished on New Hampshire’s tallest vodka column and contains no ‘mouth-feel’ additives.”

Each person, whether a customer, an employee, or a family member, has their favorite spirit. For Christopher, it is rye whiskey and also gin. Tracy, like her husband, enjoys the gin produced at Cathedral Ledge. “We have similar tastes. All spirits have their place and can be enjoyed at a specific time of year. My choices depend on lots of things, such as what we are having for dinner or the weather or season,” Christoper says.

About 18 products are distilled each year, and some are seasonal. Says Christopher, “We just made a blueberry vodka, which is a great summer drink.”

It is tempting to keep coming up with new flavors, but it is time-consuming.

There is a limit to how many new creations the staff and Christopher can produce due to the time factor involved. “From a practical standpoint, we have to slow down when it comes to coming up with and making new products. Everything is fun to launch, but it all takes up shelf space.”

There is a vast difference in the aging and distilling times for each, with vodkas taking only two weeks to make.

Whiskey, on the other hand, can age for years. Christopher and staff make it all on-site, from grain to glass.

There is plenty to see and shop for at Cathedral Ledge Distillery, with many spirits from which to choose. Customer favorites, according to Christopher, are bourbon and the maple liqueur, which is popular and has a real New Hampshire/New England feel.

For those who want to see how spirits are made and ask questions, Cathedral Ledge Distillery offers public tours year-round. The tours run from 30 minutes to longer, depending on what guests ask and want to know.

“We have an appreciation for the craft of distilling, and we like to share that with our customers.”

The business that started as a dream has grown by leaps and bounds, and Christopher looks ahead with confidence. “We continue to grow through our tasting room in North Conway, the many farmers markets that we vend at throughout New Hampshire, and the NH Wine and Liquor Outlets. Our focus remains on producing the highest-quality spirits we can, in a manner we are proud of. I am confident that as long as we maintain this focus, good things lie ahead.”

OHRV Safety is a Priority for the Fish and Game Department This Summer New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers are preparing a proactive strategy of law enforcement initiatives geared toward encouraging safe and responsible individual riding practices this summer and beyond.

With the majority of trails now open in the state, riders should be sure to understand all the rules and regulations associated with safe and responsible OHRV operation. They are also asked to be respectful toward residents and landowners, to stay on marked trails, to operate within their skill level, to wear protective equipment, including helmets, and to keep both hands on handlebars.

“Operating an OHRV on private property without landowner permission is by far the most common com-

plaint received by Fish and Game regarding OHRVs,” said Captain Mike Eastman, who coordinates OHRV safety education and enforcement for Fish and Game’s Law Enforcement Division. “Landowner grievances are where we will be focusing a great deal of our enforcement efforts as the riding season progresses.”

Unlike other outdoor activities, such as hunting or hiking, where private land must be posted to keep people off, riders of motorized vehicles must have written landowner permission, whether the land is posted or not. Local OHRV clubs have been able to establish marked, designated trails through dedicated work with individual property owners to procure the necessary landowner agreements to establish trail

systems. In addition to operating off designated trails, noise from illegally modified exhaust systems and excessive speed are the most frequent complaints Fish and Game receives from property owners.

“Fish and Game is also very focused throughout the year on educating the public about the principles of safe OHRV operation,” said Eastman.

“Operating an OHRV is all about personal responsibility, and accidents are usually caused by people driving carelessly, too fast, beyond their skill level, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. To help prevent accidents, riders should always anticipate other operators on the trail, stay to the right side of the route, and maintain a safe following distance from the machine in front of them. It may seem like common sense, but wearing a helmet and keeping both hands on the handlebars and remaining in control of the machine are crucial to a safe and exciting ride.”

In addition to enhanced enforcement, safety education is another way that Fish and Game’s Law Enforcement Division works to foster responsible OHRV operation. Each year, volunteer OHRV safety instructors educate over 1,000 students regarding OHRV rules, regulations, and responsible and safe operation. State law requires all operators 12 years of age and over to have either a valid motor vehicle driver’s license or to have successfully completed an approved OHRV safety education class in order to operate off their own property. “We strongly recommend that all riders who purchase or rent an OHRV take a safety class to help reduce the risk of personal injury and property damage,” said Eastman.
