Step Back in Time at the NH Farm Museum much food to prepare. I thought it was interesting that although a descendent of the family lived there in the 1970s, she kept the kitchen as it was with the old ice box and not upgrading the ancient phone or stove, either. At the time the family got their first phone, every day at noon an operator would call all the homes in the area with the time and weather report.

After the tour, you’ll want to explore the barn. It’s full of interesting artifacts from rural life long ago. I was amazed to find they have Daniel Webster’s wooden plow—yes, Daniel Webster!

There is old dairy equipment and milk bottles, farming tools like thrashes and wagon jacks, pulley and rope systems

for loading hay into the barn, corn knives and saws, wooden maple syrup buckets, and many other interesting items.

Have you ever heard of the Uncle Sam Sled? I sure hadn’t! It was built in 1894 by the BF Perkins Carriage Factory in Farmington, before the automobile became popular. The sled was an incredible 77 feet long, and could carry 72 adults or over 100 children at 60 miles an hour down Main Street.

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, explaining the family history as well as what life was like on the farm in the 1800s. At one time, the farm had about 40 sheep, 100 acres of flax for making thread, and the remnants of old rock walls indicate that there was also a cow run. There’s old equipment for turning wool into yarn and flax into thread. Many people bartered at that time, and the family would trade at the market for exotic spices or colorful dyes. They were very resourceful back then, and I was surprised to learn that tiny crushed snail shells could be used to dye wool a dark brown color. When they weren’t in the kitchen, the women and children would practice embroidery or make candles to prepare for winter. Betsy’s husband Levi suffered from stomach issues, so his wife made a tea with dried corn silk to comfort him. In that time, there would be a rifle at the ready, and a pack containing a mug, salt biscuit, and flint and steel if needed for survival.

When the tour moved to the parlor, we entered the Victorian Era. Betsy and Levi’s daughter, Emma, would play piano to entertain travelers who stayed at their tavern. When their son Robert grew up, he went to Hollywood. When he came home, it’s evident that he put money into the home’s furnishings, wall paper, and a new, “modern” kitchen. Back then, a stage coach would deliver travelers to the tavern.

The driver would honk to indicate how many passengers were arriving.

By Sarah Wright If you haven’t been to the New Hampshire Farm Museum in Milton, you’re missing out on a local treasure.

There’s still time to visit this year, and the museum has some fun events coming up. I went on a beautiful fall day recently, and had a wonderful experience. You can feel the history of the farm as you walk around the property and tour the homestead.

While I was waiting for the tour of the main buildings to start, I walked around the land, acquired in the early 1800s by Joseph Plummer and his brother, Bart, who were given 600 acres each upon their return from the war. At that time, the land was considered part of Rochester. The property consists of a big house, little house, back house, and barn. In 1804, the large part of the house was built to run as a tavern. The back house was added in 1830, and the barn was built in 1845. The best thing about the house tour is that you can move through time as you move from room to room, noticing how the furnishings, building materials, and décor changed as each part of the home was built. When daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) Plummer married a Rochester teacher named Levi Jones, the property became known as the Jones Farm, staying in the family for four generations. The most recent resident was a woman named Elizabeth (different Elizabeth), who lived in the house until she passed away in 1975.

The property is now owned by an educational organization.

• Farm Museum Continued from page 3 store. There’s some produce for sale, along with plenty of gift items such as homemade soaps, wooden children’s toys, and books.

The NH Farm Museum’s next big event is called Over the River, where visitors can glimpse how Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1863, when it was first observed as a national holiday.

Costumed guides will lead tours as they take on the characters of Jones family members and share stories of this exciting time in the history of the house, which will be decorated for the occasion. “Emily” will play the piano, and there will also be light refreshments, hands-on activities, and wagon rides. Over the River will take place on Saturday, November 17

from 10 am to 3 pm. It’ll be a learning experience for the whole family!

Enjoy Christmas Through the Ages on Saturday, December 15 from 10 am to 3 pm. Tour the beautifully decorated historic Jones Farmhouse with costumed role players, and experience the wonders of the Yuletide in the 1800s. You can make hand-dipped candles, and enjoy storytelling and Victorian parlor games. Gingerbread, hot cider, and other seasonal treats will be served in the farmhouse kitchen.

Don’t miss this local gem! The NH Farm Museum is located at 1305 White Mountain Highway in Milton.

Christmas at the Castle Celebrates Holiday Traditions From Around the World This November, Castle in the Clouds will host its popular, annual Christmas at the Castle. The festive event brings the community together at the historic mountaintop estate in Moultonborough. Working with the theme of “holidays around the world,” local businesses and designers will showcase their design aesthetic by adopting a room in the mansion or area of the estate grounds and decorating it to the nines.

“There will be décor inspired by holiday traditions in Japan, Germany, Mexico, and more,” explains Castle Curator, Robin Sherman.

“Incorporating cultural traditions pays homage to the appreciation that Lucknow’s original owners, Thomas and Olive Plant, had for the wider world. The couple enjoyed traveling abroad, and their regard for the traditional architectural design of other countries is apparent in the design of the Lucknow mansion, where English, Norwegian, Swiss, and even Japanese architectural features come together in the astounding Arts and Crafts style home. We are excited to merge the history of the estate with the traditions of other countries, and we hope our guests enjoy experiencing these other cultures in an immersive and beautiful way.”

On the weekends of November 17 and 18 and November 23 to 25, Christmas at the Castle will take place from 10

am to 4 pm. “Christmas at the Castle is one of the best events of the year for families and children,” says Stephanie Poole, Programs and Volunteer Coordinator. “In addition to touring the Castle, all decorated for the holidays, guests can enjoy free activities in the Carriage House including children’s holiday crafts, a visit with Santa Claus, cookies and hot cocoa, and the artisan fair.”

The Gift Shop will be open during the Christmas at the Castle event, featuring NH-made items such as candles, soaps, children’s toys, jewelry and more.

Visitors can also enjoy lunch at The Carriage House Restaurant from 11 am to 4 pm. Tickets for Castle tours will be sold until 3 pm. Admission is $20 for adults, $10 for 17 and under.

Admission for members is $15 for adults and $8 for age 17 and under.

Children age 4 and under are free.

Catching the Light - Guest Artists Show at Art Works Art Works Gallery in Chocorua, NH announces the first “Guest Artists” exhibit with an opening reception on Saturday, November 17 from 5 to 7 pm. The exhibit will be on view until January 17, 2019, and is an important collection from local artist and photographer Peter A. Jeschke and glassblower Eric Trulson. The artists have captured the essence of light’s most exquisite qualities.

Peter’s photographic images of ice crystals have been viewed by international art critics with an eye to showing his work in NYC and abroad. Eric has studied with the local renowned glass artist Peter Vanderlaan

from Chocorua, NH and proven to have talents of his own. Both artists will be present at the reception to explain their work.

Eric is a glassblower, metalworker, and mechanical engineer. Self-taught, his primary focus for the past decade has been hot glass work, especially the intersection of traditional glassblowing techniques and modern fabrication technology. While glassblowing has remained largely unchanged for the past three millennia, the past 30 years have seen an explosion of growth in computer-controlled fabrication methods, such as CNC machining and 3D printing. these areas has only just begun to be explored by glass artists, and Eric hopes to spend his artistic career pushing the boundaries of what is possible by combining these two worlds.

Most recently, he has been living in Tamworth, NH and studying colormixing and the chemistry of glass under Peter Vanderlaan, an accomplished glassblower and incredibly wellrespected glass chemist. The work submitted to this show represents the culmination of that period of study.

Peter has taken photographs since he was a teenager and was even voted “Most Artistic” his senior year at Kennett High School in Conway, NH, but only later in life could he turn photography into a profession. He explains his long wait by saying, “I could not, in good conscience, subject my family to a ‘starving artist’ phase.”

After enrolling in college at age 25, he pursued his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Earth Sciences at UNH and has had a long professional career as a geophysicist.

Rochester Museum of Fine Arts Upcoming Exhibits The Rochester Museum of Fine Arts will present works by Matt Pidgeon in the Bernier Room, at the Rochester Community Center, located at 150 Wakefield Street in Rochester. The exhibit is currently on display and will run through January 4, 2019.

Matt Pidgeon has been a painter for most of his life and employs various mediums including acrylic, oil, and enamel on canvas. Pidgeon has been featured in numerous galleries throughout New England and New York. His work has been acquired by both public and private collectors, residential and commercial.

Pidgeon is heavily influenced by the works of Wassily Kandinsky, Jackson Pollock, Picasso, and Braque. He paints with great passion for music and incorporates mood evoking color and movement into his works. The process is meticulous and involves hours of painting, viewing, and reflecting.

This will be Matt’s second exhibition with the Rochester Museum of Fine Arts. His work was last showcased in a vacant store front window. This will be his first solo exhibition in the Bernier Room.

Artist Matthew Wolcott will be exhibiting in the Bernier Room from January 5 to February 1, 2019. Says Wolcott, “I start with a mark; I try to allow it to come naturally. My references are my every day; the graffiti I see, the cars and billboards I drive by, the comic books of my youth, the movies I watch, the music I listen to, and fragments from the paintings I see.

Enjoy Holiday Fun Along Route 16!

By Sarah Wright The holiday season has officially begun, and there is so much to do!

Local towns all around the Route 16 area have planned plenty of festive fun events for all ages. Mark your calendars, because the list of area activities is lengthy.

The Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce will present the town’s Holiday Tree Lighting on Friday, November 30th at 5:30 pm in Central Square. Come to Rochester and take in the beautiful lights. The annual Holiday Parade will be held on Sunday, December 2nd at 3 pm. The theme of this year’s parade is “Christmas Around the World.” Don’t miss the creative floats. You’ll truly feel the spirit of Christmas at the Festival of Trees at Studley’s Flower Garden Greenhouse on Wakefield Street. Enjoy caroling, refreshments, and a visit with Santa among the beautifully decorated trees.

This year, there will also be a live auction and raffle prizes. This event will take place on Friday, November 30th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, and on Saturday, December 1st from 4 to 8 pm.

Visit the NH Farm Museum on White Mountain Highway in Milton, and enjoy Christmas Through the Ages on Saturday, December 15th from 10 am to 3 pm. Tour the beautifully decorated historic Jones Farmhouse with costumed role players, and experience the wonders of the Yuletide in the

The Wakefield Parks and Recreation Department will host the annual Breakfast with Santa Craft Bazaar on Saturday, December 1st. The fair will be held at The Paul School on Taylor Way, from 9 am to 2 pm. It’ll be fun for the whole family.

The Conway Scenic Railroad will once again offer the Santa’s Holiday Express train rides on November 23rd, 24th, and 25th; December 1st and 2nd; December 8th and 9th; and on December 15th through the 23rd. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Carroll County will present their annual Festival of Trees at the

Don’t miss the fun on November 24th at the Old-Fashioned Christmas in North Conway. Festivities will begin in Schouler Park at 4:30 pm with caroling, presented by Da Capo. Then, from 5:30 to 5:50 pm, join the holiday “Parade of Carols” which will process from the north end of Norcross Circle to the Eastern Slope Inn, where the resort holds their own lighting. Of course, Santa will stop in front of the library on the way, to pick up his copy of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Between 6 and 7:30 pm, he will read the book at the Eastern Slope Playhouse where cookies and hot cocoa will be served. During his reading, the Mt. Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center will be open for anyone who would like to stop in.

The Old-Fashioned Christmas events support the non-profit charity, Angels and Elves, whose mission is to provide holiday gifts to over 600 children.

On Saturday, December 1st, kids can enjoy Breakfast with Santa at the North Conway Community Center at Norcross Circle from 8 to 11 am. You won’t want to miss this all-you-caneat pancake breakfast with sausage and bacon. Children can also get their pictures taken with Santa and make a fun little arts and craft project to take home.

Two Upcoming and Entertaining Concerts at Advice to the Players Advice To The Players will host Cynthia Shaw in concert on November 23 at 7:30 pm at The Arts Center at 12 Main Street in Sandwich. A musical storyteller, Shaw will perform her onewoman show, Velvet Determination: A Young Pianist’s Journey to New York.

Cynthia Shaw enjoyed her childhood piano lessons and music-making. As time went on, she developed a bigger dream: Moving to New York to attend the esteemed Manhattan School of Music. However, this goal was a bit more difficult than she expected. As she struggled with her self-sabotaging demons, shaky memorization, and insufficient technique, she mastered a falling piano, a sweltering practice room, a music-hating neighbor, a condescending teacher and other obstacles that confronted a young Colorado classical pianist who decided to tackle the Big Apple!

In this charming, musicfilled 60-minute solo show, Cynthia creates over 10 characters, including her piano teachers: her kindly childhood teacher, her University of Denver teacher who opened Cynthia’s eyes to the world of New York, and her formidable first New York piano

teacher. Throughout the show, Cynthia will play the piano music of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, and Schubert.

A unique musician of equally unique origins, Kyle Carey’s unique fusion of ‘Gaelic Americana’ music includes influences of the American Folk Anthology, the traditional music of Cape Breton, Ireland and Scotland, and the Appalachian poetry of Louise McNeill.

Kyle spent her earliest years in the Alaskan Bush, where her parents were teachers, and where she found herself

immersed in the Yupik language and its songs—developing a sensitivity to language and music that would aid her later in the creation of her own style of trans-Atlantic folk.

As a young woman, Kyle traveled to Cape Breton on a Fulbright Fellowship to learn Scottish Gaelic. Afterward, she spent a year on the Isle of Skye in Scotland—honing her skills in the Gaelic language and studying singing technique with Lewis-born singer Christine Primrose, before landing finally in Ireland—where she recorded her debut album Monongah.

Produced by former Lùnasa guitarist Donogh Hennessy, Monongah features some of the finest guest artists in Irish folk. It rose to number eight in the summer of 2011 on the International Folk DJ charts, landing on a number of ‘Best of’ lists by year’s end.

Her sophomore release, North Star,

produced by Solas founding member Seamus Egan, features another all-star cast and was released in the fall of 2014 to wide-spread critical acclaim.

Kyle’s third and newest album, The Art of Forgetting, was produced by Dirk Powell, recorded in Louisiana, and features luminaries such as Rhiannon Giddens, John McCusker and Mike McGoldrick. The Art of Forgetting was released in early 2018 to widespread acclaim and funded wholly by Kyle’s loyal fan base—which at this point— spans both sides of the Atlantic and then some.

Gafney November Art Exhibit and Reception “The Magic of Color and Light,” an exhibit of original paintings by Wakefield artist Teresa McWilliams Farina, is the featured at the Gafney Library during the month of November.

Teresa has subtitled her exhibit “The Celebration of Nature and Life in Art,” and will show her works of plein air landscapes, animals, florals, still life and people.

Teresa was a self-taught painter in the beginning, starting at the age of six.

Born in Flint, Michigan, she painted in oil pigments on old window shades.

She illustrated her own stories and painted theater sets in grade school. At holidays, she painted murals on large picture windows of her family home in Saginaw, Michigan. During her

high school years, she was awarded art scholarships to study art at Interlochen National Music Camp for two summers in Traverse City, Michigan.

After completion of undergrad school in science (B.S. degree) at the University of Detroit, she studied at various art schools in Michigan. She has an Associate’s degree in Fine Arts (Studio Painting) and M.B.A (Business Management). She has studied drawing, watercolor, pastel and oil painting with numerous instructors from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, as well as instructors from other Pennsylvania art schools.

She completed an independent study program in 2011 with international artist, James DuPree.

Get in the Holiday Spirit at the Rochester Main Street Festival of Trees Rochester Main Street is hosting the third annual Festival of Trees event on multiple dates this year, giving even more ways for guests to win fully decorated holiday trees and prizes.

The public is invited to attend the Tree Showcase and Live Auction on Friday, November 30 and the traditional Festival of Trees raffle event on Saturday, December 1. Both events are held at Studley’s Flower Garden greenhouse at 82 Wakefield Street in Rochester, NH. The fundraiser event offers the public an opportunity to win dozens of wonderfully decorated trees, generously donated by area businesses and organizations. The trees often include valuable gifts, in addition to beautiful decorations. This year features some premium trees with total values over $500.

The Friday (November 30) Tree Showcase event will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the greenhouse and features a live auction of premium trees. The evening will also feature live music, refreshments, and a sneak peek at trees available to win during Saturday’s raffle event. Admission to Friday’s event is just $10 and includes 10 raffle tickets for Saturday’s drawing. Children enter free of charge.

Additional raffle tickets for Saturday’s event are available for purchase.

Saturday’s traditional Festival of Trees event will be held from 4 to 8 pm in the greenhouse and features refreshments, caroling starting at 5 pm, and a visit from Santa Claus at 6 pm.

Guests can purchase raffle tickets to win dozens of fully decorated holiday trees and wreaths, including some premium trees. Admission to Saturday’s event is just $5 and includes five raffle tickets for the drawings. Children enter free.

Additional raffle tickets are available for purchase to increase the chances of winning.

The live auction begins at 8 pm on Friday, and the raffle drawings will begin at 8 pm on Saturday. Winners can collect the winnings after the event concludes or on Sunday, December 2 during the hours of 9 am and 1 pm.

Unclaimed trees and gifts by that time will be forfeited.

Proceeds from Festival of Trees will benefit downtown Rochester promotions and events. Volunteer support is welcome at this event.
