ne vividly memorable summer day, year’s past my adolescent prime, I rewound to my childhood.

When in my mid 20s, my younger brother, Tyler, and I designed a day-long “brolympics” competition, where we made sport of trying to oneup each other in a number of nostalgic competitions.

We shot pool, threw darts, had a basketball shooting contest (which I still to this day don’t know how I lost), button mashed our way through some video games, and more.

We also decided to see who could suck their way the fastest to the bottom of a 21oz cup of Slurpee. Sitting in a 7-Eleven parking lot, we counted down and it was game on.

I took a deep breath and gulped down as much frozen carbonated beverage as humanly possible within seconds. About three gulps in, a massive brain freeze

hit my temples and I put one hand on my head—and kept sucking. About a minute later, I threw my hands, while concurrently wincing in pain. I was victorious.

My brother, Tyler, always a bit wiser at a younger age than I was—in part I believe because he had learned from my blunders—responded to his defeat matter-of-factly.

“So, you’ve got a headache, and now I can slowly enjoy my Slurpee. Cool.”

I ended up losing the brolympics that day, but gaining a memory that has stood the test of time.

Summer is about new possibilities, making space for trying the untried and making it a priority to be with those you love the most as much as you can.

LONDON WILSON Let's see...how should I put this? I could talk about how I've been behind a camera since my early high school days or how much I love my craft more and more the older I become. Let's be real, hiring a photographer and/or videographer for your event can be scary. I picked up on that pretty quickly when I started capturing moments professionally. That's why I made it my personal mission to create an experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

My approach to photo and video is a little different than the norm. I focus on bringing out your LOVE for each other, and capturing candid moments instead of poses. I like to use posing prompts instead of poses. Less like: put your arms around each other and smile, and more like: slow dance to your favorite song, whisper in each others ears, kiss everywhere but the lips, tickle each other and run around like you're a kid again. @londonwmedia

soon as you park, you see a palette of petunias and a giant milkweed tree swarming with monarch butterflies along a fence that skirts the perimeter of Peterson Nursery and Garden Center. Here is a garden that’s moved many times throughout the decades, but has kept the same promise.

It all started as a hobby in the spring of 1932. Their grandfather, Newton Curtis Peterson Sr. began growing camellias and azaleas in tin cans with poked holes on the bottom and started selling them to his neighbors. He discovered the apple-blossom pink Duchess of Cypress azalea at the nursery’s original location at Riggins & Pennsylvania near Lake Morton which he opened in 1932.

The nursery moved from one location to the next for decades at a time. Karen Norris-Peterson and her younger brother, Howell “Howie” E. Peterson Jr., were handed the torch in 1985 by their father, Newton Curtis Peterson Jr., to continue the generations-spanning nursery. It was eight acres then, but they decided to downsize and settled on their current location they moved into in 1985.

Now on County Road 540A in south Lakeland, the nursery has seen a significant change in scenery from the original untrammeled central Florida.

“When we first moved out here, there was no CVS, no Walgreens, no Publix,” Karen said. “There was just a strip plaza. Now, they have a small town…it was kind of a little community that moved close to us here.”

They’re frequently visited by the same customers, some of whom have known of the nursery since they were children. Some customers have been coming for three generations, and have memories of visiting the nursery with their grandparents.

Their nursery has always been known for its roses, and it’s a promise they keep every year to provide samplings that blossom into an eyecatching hue. Karen and Howie have been ordering their roses from California for 50 years, understanding that their staple flora has a dynamic trend among their customer base.

Around this time of the year, the nursery orders roses to get the saplings in December like clockwork to make it in time for the growing season.

Plants have trends. Some come and go where providers don’t grow them anymore based on demand. With this philosophy, every year, Peterson’s grows at least 1,000 roses. They grow their roses for eight weeks, and the All-American Rose Society picks new rose varieties annually.

New rose species are introduced to the nursery every year because of their novelty and attractive colors, making them more expensive to import and sell. Each species requires a different method of maintaining its fragrance.

“We get excited with new varieties, new colors, new habits, like if they’re disease resistant and if they last a long time in a vase,” Karen said. “That’s what everybody kinda wants, something lowmaintenance like that.”

They also order classic roses like red Mr. Lincoln’s and peach-apricot Tiffany’s for customers who remember when their grandparents cultivated those species.

While they’re bridging the gap between what’s new and striking versus what’s old and nostalgic, they continue to provide education on their life’s work.

“You never plan to fail. You fail to plan is kind of an old slogan that we’ve picked up over the years,” Karen said. “We want to make people educated on how to do things right.”

Every month, Karen hosts a free lecture from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. that covers a specific aspect of gardening, anything from how to attract bees to your garden to landscaping.

For beginners looking for somewhere to till the soil and start gardening, Karen suggests beginning a vegetable garden, depending on the season.

During the dog days of summer, cherry tomatoes, peppers, okra, and eggplant are in season since they naturally can handle 110-degree heat.

“Getting out there working in the garden is satisfying alone. It’s just rewarding that way,” Karen said. “I’d much rather be out there working in my garden. It’s very therapeutic instead of doing paperwork. I love waiting on customers and helping them with their garden.”

Their nursery is one of the oldest in Lakeland, with other nurseries coming and going. There’s uncertainty about who will take their place in the future, but until then, they’ll still carry on their legacy appreciated and carried on by generations of Lakelanders.

Horsespring Farm

3135 Owl Roost Trail Lake Wales, FL 33898 Whether you’re interested in a one-time trail ride or would love to get personal horseback riding lessons, Horsespring Farm welcomes all to enjoy their sociable horses and unblemished countryside views. For one hour of riding time, the flat rates start at about $50 a person per ride, and they are open seven days a week.

Children must be at least 3 years old to ride, obviously with guidance of an accompanied adult. Helmets are available as well. During their guided trail rides, visitors can spot a ton of wildlife, including but not limited to owls, foxes and tortoises.

No matter the knowledge or skill level, they provide lessons guided by their highly-skilled staff of 45-years worth of training to teach everyone from beginner to intermediate riders the equestrian ropes. In addition, they feature horse boarding for anyone seeking a place to board their equine, starting at $400 a month.

This community-centric farm offers affordable rates for the whole family to enjoy ride-alongs on 12 acres of open pastures.

Guided by the Certified Horsemanship Association's Composite Horsemanship Manual, their staff works hard to create a strong program for guests to receive private or group lessons. Group lessons begin at $160 per month (or $50 per lesson). One-on-one lessons begin at $220-$240 per month (or $70 per lesson).

Currently they have availability for pasture boarding starting at around $475 per month, which creates a safe environment outdoors for horses.

At Milkster Nitrogen Creamery, located in the Publix plaza along County Line Road, it feels like Willy Wonka teamed up with dairy farmers to create an exciting and delicious experience in a sleek and stylish modern setting.

Lakelanders Joel and Nancy Covitz opened Milkster in October 2022, and they offer endlessly customizable nitrogen ice cream options, as well as specialty coffees and milkshakes.

Some of the local favorite recipes include Cereal Milk—which includes Fruity or Cocoa Pebbles—and Strawberry Cheesecake, while some of the Milkster staples across the chain's five locations include the Biscoff Voyage for coffee lovers and chocolaty delightful Ferrero Rocher.

Customers can follow a recipe or design their dream creation at the standard rate of 96 cents per ounce.

“It’s very exciting. The kids are all like, ‘Oh wow, it’s so cool,’” Nancy said about watching first-time guests.

“They’ll stand up in the glass and they’ll feel the smoke of the nitrogen.”

Though they are part of a franchise based in Michigan, Nancy and Joel live in Lakeland and make the case they are very much a local small business.

“I think people think that because it's a franchise, we're a big business.

associated with the area for 17 years,” Nancy said. “And [people] think, ‘Oh, well you're a franchise, they supplied everything.’ No, no, no, no, no. Right down to every last spoon, every last cap that goes on the dispenser is all us.”

They are proud parents to three children, including Katie, a Milkster employee who is a rising senior at Santa Fe Catholic High School.

Their son AJ just completed his junior year at St. Leo University in Pasco County, and their oldest, 25-year-old Jack, has been traveling as part of Broadway shows “Book of Mormon” and “Waitress” the past two years, but very well might be donning a Milkster uniform for a bit when touring is over.

were actually on a trip in the Caribbean, and they had somebody watching their house and they were like,’ Hey, we wanna get in the pool, can you turn on the hot tub? And they were in the Caribbean and they said, ‘Sure, I'll turn it on from my phone.”

Goldsmith pools come with a PebbleTec finish, which Hornbuckle calls a “beautiful, lifetime” finish that comes in almost any color.

For more standard pool builds, the process can be straightforward. Goldsmith staff build out a client’s pool on 3d software, send it to them and set up a meeting at their home where they can go over the plans and provide a quote.

The larger the project, the more complex the design phase can become.

Hornbuckle said for pools that are $200,000+ the company partners with Dreamscapes Pools and Spas to go through an intensive, highly individualistic process.

Standard pool builds generally take 3-4 months to complete from first dig, and larger more customized pools generally take longer.

Hornbuckle said the company is just as devoted to meeting its customer’s needs through trustworthy relationships as it is through quality products.

When a build starts, customers can track progress on an app that provides regular updates.

“We’re real people. So if you call us we’re gonna answer the phone…and if you have a problem we’re going to work through it together.”

One interesting trend Hornbuckle noted is that people seem to be building smaller pools and investing more in outdoor kitchens, furniture and entertainment spaces.

“Before, I believe it was just, ‘Hey, I wanna get the biggest…deepest pool in my yard,” he said. “But now it seems like everyone's going to smaller pools that are shallower….so , you know, they're gonna walk around with a drink in their hand.”

“We always had to have someone come in and build our pools, and we weren’t always satisfied with the work,” said Dillon Hornbuckle, COO of Goldsmith Pools, who worked on the home construction side of the business prior. “So we thought, man, if we want to build these big custom homes with big cool custom pools, maybe we ought to do it ourselves.”

Goldsmith focuses on matching custom styles with high-end finishes to build pools that are gorgeous to look at, easy to maintain and connected via the newest technology. For example, all of Goldsmith’s pools have automation built in, allowing owners to control temperature, lighting, pool pumps and more, all from the convenience of a mobile app.

But if you’re looking for the leaders of the company — owner Thomas McBride and the project manager, his son Christopher—look no further than local backyards because this duo is onsite doing quality work quickly without much fanfare, but with a lot of satisfied customers.

“Kind of what sets us apart from other companies and builders is just how hands-on we are,” Christopher said. “So I’m really able to control the quality and timeline of the projects.”

Christopher said typically projects range from 6-10 weeks from the time dirt is first turned over, and he encourages prospective customers to call around to get other quotes and timelines to find out how Polk County Pools compares.

He believes people are drawn in by their commitment to quality customer

care, and from an options and materials standpoint Christopher says, “if you see a pool in a picture, we can build it for you.” He jokes that Pinterest inspiration boards have “changed his life.”

Polk County Pools offer exposed aggregate and PebbleTec surfaces in a wide variety of colors. Christopher said currently their customers are more frequently choosing exposed aggregate because of how smooth it is.

Although pinpointing pricing can be tricky because every customer has different wishes, McBride shares that a pool they build with the bare essentials starts around $50,000, but this year alone he has 10 contracts for pools that are more than $100,000.

“Do you want a spa or do you want a sun ledge? How many lights do you want? Do you want them automated?

Do you want water features like waterfalls?” he asks rhetorically.

He said he likes to determine what people’s budgets are up front and then help them build a pool with features they enjoy, as well as with the infrastructure to add other upgrades down the road.

With Polk County Pool’s building process customers are provided a 3D look at what the final product will look like on their property before they ever sign a contract.

Places that don't get the PR, but are worth the trip

ebsites like LakelandMom.com and social media make it hard to stay out of the local spotlight for long, but April has a few suggestions for fun that might considered more “under the radar.”

MULBERRY PHOSPHATE MUSEUM The free museum examines the impact phosphate has had locally from prehistoric times until today.

“They have a pile of rocks basically that came from the mines….with little shark teeth in it,” Mucci says about the historic spot located in the city’s original train depot. The museum also has several galleries that bring to life the history of the area, and just across the street is the Mulberry Cultural Center.

MURALS, MURALS EVERYWHERE Lakeland is rich with artistic talent, and in recent years buildings throughout the city have become canvasses for expression for all to enjoy.

There is everything from the massive and intriguing “Watchful Woman” painting near Thom Downs Antiques to the fresh citrus-infused “Cultivate” mural near Catapult.

Mucci’s website, as well as Visit Central Florida and LAL Today combine to provide addresses and artist information on almost every mural in Swan City.

Mucci and her kids have enjoyed many of Lakeland’s fine playgrounds over the years, and everyone should heed her one unchanging piece of wisdom: “Go early in the morning or after dinner so it’s not so dang hot.”

Mucci mentioned several parks to check out that might not roll off the tongue as quickly as Common Ground or Bonnet Springs.

The train playground at Woodlake Park is a favorite—and as we featured earlier this year, you can play pickleball or tennis at the facility as well.

A relatively new addition to the Lakeland play scene is McGee Park. Located off Edgewood, the car-themed playground includes tires to climb, vehicles to “drive” and a gas pump that always sells gas for the same price, alongside a number of well manicured sports fields.

And nothing makes the kids say “yo ho ho” quite like the Pirate Park at Lake Parker, where kids can run, climb towers and ride a zipline until they call mayday.

When she and her family do decide to splurge, though, here are some of the local places she points to for making memories.

ENJOY A SAFARI WITHOUT GOING TO AFRICA

Many locals still don’t know about the wild animals that A.) are not in a zoo or B.) the alligators they are hoping to snap a pic with at Circle B. But, Safari Wilderness Ranch at the edge of Lakeland near Polk City, is a place to encounter everything from waterbuck to lemurs to zebras and more.

“It’s like a theme park safari guide, but better because the animals are literally right there!” says Mucci, who has gone on several field trips to the ranch with her boys. “I mean you can reach out and pet the zebra, though I think they tell you not to. There are animals you can feed; there are llamas, there are ostrich, there are cattle, and there are all kinds of crazy animals!”

The ranch is known for its wide range of safari tours, like its 2.5 hour safari truck tour that runs $119 per person, but it also is accommodating for birthday parties, offers overnight glamping, and couples can even tie the knot there as a “wild” way to kick off their marriage.

The most economical option is a 1-hour self-drive tour of the site, which runs $125 per vehicle of up to seven people.

AXE THROWING Ax-Caliber and Woodchuck’s Axe Throwing are a pair of local spots just miles apart to de-stress and see how hard and straight you can throw an instrument that has been vital to civilizations for millennia. Ax-Caliber is known for its great food offerings at breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as its delicious coffees, craft beers and its unique virtual axe throwing range. Woodchuck’s is an alcohol-free range located inside N7 Nitro Kava Bar that is open from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. seven days a week.

As Mucci puts it, “everyday doesn’t have to be magical or unique,” and sometimes having a plan to live your best life at home is just perfect.

Get stocked up on craft supplies and don’t forget how easy it is to facilitate a classic water balloon fight.

“I remember my kids playing baseball with water balloons, and they absolutely loved it,” Mucci said.

Even on days where you stay put, it can help everyone rest easier with a basic schedule or routine.

“Either it’s this hour is for quiet time and this hour is for everyone to play outside, or it’s a weekly schedule where three days a week you go places and two you are at home,” Mucci suggests.

Even though Mucci is the unofficial queen of “go here” and “do this” in Lakeland, she admits that some of her favorite days are spent in the same place she curates her website from—her home.

And she also encourages families that have the means to find a way to travel at least once during the summer to try new things and see new sights.
