COASTAL BEND SOFTBALL ON BIG STAGE Calallen falls short of 4A state title, Bishop bounced in state semifinals

When the season began, the Calallen Lady Wildcats and the Bishop Lady Badgers were viewed as contenders to come out of Region IV in their respective conferences.

Fast forwarding to late May, early June, that turned out to be the case as Calallen and Bishop represented Region IV-4A in a return to the final four, while Bishop represented Region IV-3A to cap off a historic season.

For the Lady Wildcats, it seemed like business as usual, as they returned to the state tournament for the first time since 2019 after the COVID-19 pandemic cut the 2020 softball season short before district play.

The Lady Wildcats were able to advance to the 4A title game, where they would fall 10-3 at the hands of an experienced Liberty Lady Panthers squad.

playoff matchups and an instant classic 10-9 win over Iowa Park in the semifinal following a rain

delayed that forced a change of venue in Georgetown.

“The girls wanted it, they wanted

it so bad it got to them a little bit,” Calallen coach Teresa Lentz said.

“It hurts a lot. They worked hard

and to have that courage to come in and fight through adversity round after round, I couldn’t be more proud of them. Not a lot of kids can do that.”

Calallen experienced a rain delay in the title game midway through the fourth inning when they trailed by two runs, but the Liberty bats and pitcher Kaci West proved too much in the final.

“We told ourselves that this happened for a reason,” Flores said of the rain delay. “We needed a break and to pause so we could come back stronger. Unfortunately, we didn’t, but we did have that confidence. We could have done a lot better on the field, but we just pushed and did the best we could.

No one was trying to mess up, it was the last game of the season and we did our best and wish we had a different outcome.”

Flores was one of three seniors named to the state championships all-tournament team along with Kennedy Koenig and Jasmine Pena. ► CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

Despite it all, it would be meant to be for the Lady Badgers as they fell 2-1 to the Lady Cats in the Class 3A

With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Rains’ Chanlee Oaks drilled a two-strike pitch to left-center that Bishop’s Alinna Cruz nearly tracked down until the ball went in and out of her glove, allowing Lynzee Hague to score the winning run.

Bishop parlayed its firstever region final into its first trip to the state tournament and ended the year with a 31-4-2 record.

“It was a tough loss, anytime we lose a game like that,” Bishop coach Tito Moreno said, “It was a close game and a hard pill to swallow but I’m proud of the girls. The season they had and how they battled all year long, we were down early in the game but we continued to battle and continued to fight.”

PIRATES HOIST COLORS AT STATE

London falls in 3A title game; Sinton comes up short in 4A semis

By Mark Molina Rio Sports Live The Coastal Bend Baseball scene was well-represented at the UIL state baseball tournaments, as the London Pirates and the Sinton Pirates broke through to Round Rock and Austin, respectively.

For the London Pirates, it was not only the first trip to the big dance for their baseball team, but it was the athletic program’s first-ever state-qualifying team.

The new k ids on the block Pirates would make the most of its first trip, advancing to the state title game where they would fall to the Malakoff Tigers 8-7 after watching a three-run lead evaporate in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“Coming two outs short of winning the state title is going to be a tough pill to swallow and it’s going to hurt a little bit,” London co-head coach Albert Amaya said.

“I want these kids to know how much we love them and how great of a season they had. To come from a team picked last in district to being two outs away from a state championship — that’s a great

season.”

London (33-6-1) trailed 4-2 before putting up four runs in the fifth, highlighted by freshman Mason Jacob two-RBI double to get things started and RBI from freshman Landon Salinas and

senior John Martinez.

The Pirates led 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh before Malakoff put up four runs. Three of those runs were unearned, including the winning run, which came on a hit batter as a result of London

exhausting its bullpen.

“We watched it slip away,” Jacob said. “There was nothing we could do about it. We thought we had it in the bag, but (Malakoff came through when they needed to and they won. We had a great season.

Everyone doubted us, but we came out here and proved them wrong.

We got to the end of the year and the last day of baseball — there’s not too much more you can ask for.”

London advanced to the state title games after defeating Brock Eagles in a decisive 7-2 victory, led by a complete-game, two-hit effort from junior pitcher Kade Budd and a six-run second inning that ultimately paved the way to victory.

Sinton, on the other hand, was back in the final four for the first time since the 2017 season but could not come up with hits late in a 6-3 loss to the Rusk Eagles.

The Sinton Pirates trailed 2-0 early after Rusk posted two runs in the top of the first, but would answer with a Rylan Galvan hit a triple to right center and a Blake Mitchell inning to each bring in a run to tie the game at 2-2. ► CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

Bishop and Santa Gertrudis met in a best-of-three the Class 3A Region IV final. In Game 2, Bishop evened the series at 1-1 after defeating Santa Gertrudis 7-2. Page 20 Bishop’s junior pitcher Andrea Martinez recorded career strikeout 500 in their game one win over Mathis. Martinez recorded nine strike outs on the night.

Calallen defeated Somerset 19-0 in game 2. The Lady Wildcats are moving on to the next round. Cayla Rozypal was named US Army Player of the game for her performance in the team win.

Calallen’s Megan Geyer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored as Calallen beat Hondo 5-0 sweeping the series.

Edinburg Vela took down Donna High in HCISD Summer league. Aidan Avelar took home the US Army Player of the game award for his performance.

Senior posts third-fastest all-conditions 100-meter dash time in high school history

HARLINGEN — In 2019, the-Harlingen High sophomore Jose Garcia had his first chance to shine at the 6A state track meet, as he lined for the 100-meter dash next to Houston Strake Jesuit’s Matthew Boling, who had just posted the fastest all-conditions 100-meter dash time in American high school history.

Unfortunately for Garcia, a minor injury setback prior to the race did not allow him to be at his best and the Cardinal star finished last with a 10.75 seconds, while Boling placed first with a meet record of 10.13.

The COVID-19 pandemic would force Garcia to wait two years before return-

ing to state meet last month, but it would be worth it as he blazed down the Mike A. Myers track to capture gold in the 100-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 10.00, a new all-conditions state record and the third-fastest in American high school athletics.

Garcia’s official time was 9.998 (+5.1) all-conditions time ranks behind Boling’s 9.98 (+4.2) set back at the Region III-6A meet and Gibbs High School’s (Fla.) Trayvon Bromell, who recorded a 9.99 (+4.0) in 2013.

Garcia was a busy athlete at the state meet, competing in a total of four events.

Following the 100-meter dash, Garcia captured a silver medal in the boys 200-meter dash, finishing

Page 31 the race in 20.59 seconds, this time falling to Washington’s time of 20.39 and edging out King’s 20.74.

The senior sprinter also took silver in the boys long jump, posting a mark of 24 feet, 1 inch on his fifth attempt. Austin Westlake’s

Ashton Torns took gold with a jump of 24-1.25 and Katy Tompkins’ Jaden Keys with a 23-11.25.

Garcia also anchored the Harlingen 400-meter relay team consisting of Pedro Luna, Eric Quilantan and Josue Landaverde.
