Nelda Briones La Feria News La Feria has a new baker (panadero) in town.

Since the Panaderia Mavis’s Bakery closed earlier last month, the town had been without its local sweet bread.

La Feria used to have 2 bakeries in the past then one closed down and left only one in town. After hearing that the bakery in La Feria was for sale, the Reyes family jumped at the chance to open the bakery back up again and make it their own.

Husband and wife Porfirio & Maideli Reyes are the new owners of Mavis’s Bakery. The couple from Mercedes have 3 children, two girls, and one boy.

Porfirio Reyes has always had a passion for baking.

He mentioned that he comes from a family of “panaderos” where he grew up. Both his father and grandfather were bakers. At a young age he started learning how to bake the pan dulce (sweet bread). He’s worked at other bakeries as a baker before, but He’s never owned his own bakery. It was a dream of his to have his own bakery one day.

Now his dream has come true.

His daughter Rosario has taken interest in baking and is now helping out her dad in the family business. She said that she started learning at a young age. “It’s hard work but I enjoy doing it.

It’s a family tradition,” mentioned Rosario. They offer several types of sweet bread and cookies

and bake daily so their bread is always fresh.

They also have miniature conchas in a variety of colors. Porfirio along with his family opened up the bakery doors on July 6, 2021. They had a pretty good turnout on their first day, so they hope once the word gets out that they will continue to have people come from all around to try their baked goods.

The bakery for now is going to keep the original name Mavis’s Bakery.

The bakery is located at 124 W. Oleander and will be open 7 days a week from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. If you’d like to place an order or get a hold of the bakery for more information you can contact them at (956) 377-9941.

TSTC Summer Camps

GEAR UP Summer Camp Provides RGV High Schoolers with TSTC Learning Experience

(TSTC) (HARLINGEN, Texas) - After so much time spent learning virtually, Lila Quintero is looking forward to being back in the classroom -- even if it is the middle of summer vacation.

The rising sophomore at Santa Rosa ISD was on campus at Texas State Technical College among a group of students from different Region One school districts for a grant program summer camp.

“I came here to have more experience in engineering,” Quintero said. “Hopefully, it will be hands-on and not just looking at something like we have all year.”

She and the rest of her cohort experienced hands-on learning opportunities throughout the week at TSTC in three areas of study: Biomedical Equipment Technology, Culinary Arts and Precision Machining Technology.

Students interested in Biomedical Equipment Technology planned to focus on the fundamentals of electronics, including resistors, voltage and currents -- and how to solder by building their own electronics kit.

The seven-year grant program follows students starting in sixth or seventh grade and follows them through high school and into their first year of college.

During Monday’s official kickoff for the week at TSTC, provost Cledia Hernandez shared some words of wisdom with the group of students.

“You have an amazing team supporting you guys to make sure your dreams come true,” she said.

Estrella said she was going to take it easy on her students the first day to get them acclimated to the subject, the week would be full of learning.

“I think it’s very important that they can see that there’s unlimited opportunities out there,” she said.

Culinary Arts students also had plenty to do, including gaining experience in cooking and baking while also garnishing plates and making smoothies with products from the program’s on-campus garden.

“Number one, it builds leadership. It also builds teamwork,” he said. “It’s never too early to start them on that path -- to get them in the right frame of mind to get them ready for college.”

GEAR UP, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a national program that provides funding for academics and other support services to eligible students.

“The purpose of GEAR UP is to have the students and their families gain awareness of what their postsecondary options are,” said Daisy Garrett, GEAR UP facilitator with Los Fresnos CISD.

Ada Betty Finley Obituary

Ada Betty Finley Obituary Ada Betty (Dunn) Finley, age 88, of Kerrville, Texas, completed her earthly journey on June 30, 2021 in Harlingen, Texas. Ada Betty was born on November 28, 1932 in San Juan, Texas. She was the firstborn child of Joseph Curtis and Edith (Cochran) Dunn.

The year following her birth, they moved to La Feria, Texas, where Mr. Dunn had purchased a produce canning plant.

This was the beginning of his Quality Products canning business. As the business grew, so did the Dunn family, with sister Carolee and brother James being born in La Feria.

In May of 1949, at age 16, Ada Betty graduated

from La Feria High School as a member of the National Honor Society and received the Rotary International’s Achievement Award. Her higher education began at the University of Corpus Christi (now Texas A&M UniversityCorpus Christi) followed by Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. She completed a summer semester full of fun and adventure at the University of Mexico in Mexico City between her junior and senior years. She graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in 1953 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. While at H-SU, she was a member of the elite drill and marching team known as the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls.

Ada Betty remained active as an alumna and she and Bryan attended many memorable H-SU functions, with Bryan even serving on the H-SU Board of Trustees for several years.

The day after college graduation, Ada Betty took the exam to obtain her Recording Agent’s Insurance License. She passed the exam and became the youngest licensed recording agent in the state of Texas, at the age of 20. Her father, J.C. Dunn, founded the American International Life Insurance

RGV Reef Project to Benefit Local Economy

Concrete railroad ties held at this staging area at the Port of Brownsville are repurposed to create an artificial reef for the RGV Reef Project located 13 miles northeast of South Padre Island.

Everything is bigger in Texas, and that extends to our coastal waters.

Founded in 2015, the RGV Reef Project, located 13 miles northeast of South Padre Island and encompassing 1,650 acres, holds the title of largest artificial reef in the state.

This endeavor has been a collaborative labor led by the non-profit organization Friends of the RGV Reef with the help from the Port of Brownsville, port tenants and other generous contributors.

Since 2016, the Port of Brownsville has provided a staging area to serve as a central base of operations for storing and transporting thousands of tons of materials used to create a complex, layered artificial reef nursery for fish in all stages of development.

“The deep-water frontage site at the port allows us to move materials cheaply,” said Gary Glick, president of Friends of the RGV Reef. “With the support of the Port of Brownsville, we’ve built the first industrial scale reef fish nursery in the Gulf of Mexico, and it will have a huge economic impact on the region that will be felt for generations.”

According to an economic impact study published in 2018 by Aaron Economic Consulting, LLC. for the South Padre Island Economic Development Corporation, fishing and diving activity on the artificial reef is expected to result in: 537 jobs for Rio Grande Valley residents $45.6M economic output generated by the reef $13.9M in income to RGV residents $3.6M in state and local tax revenues The Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway, a Class 1 service provider at the port, has donated concrete railroad ties that serve as excellent reefing materials to create habitat for hundreds of species of fish like red snapper, invertebrates and turtles.

As of June 11, Friends have deployed 11,500 tons of concrete railroad ties donated by BNSF. In October 2020, Friends thanked International Shipbreaking Limited (ISL), a premier ship recycling company at the port, for their support and volunteer efforts by naming a vessel scuttled for the artificial reef after ISL Vice President Captain Robert “Bob” Berry.

Company in Harlingen in 1952 and Ada Betty served as Vice President upon obtaining her license.

In July 1953, Ada Betty met the handsome and personable Bryan Finley from San Benito, Texas at a stockholder dinner celebrating the first anniversary of the American International Life Insurance Company. After an evening of Bryan vying for her attention, an electrifying first dinner date soon followed and the pleasure in each other’s company never faded. They married on Valentine’s Day 1954 and their newly-wedded bliss thrived for over 65 years. The following year, they welcomed son, Kenneth Bryan, followed by daughters Karen Jeanine, Lisa Kay and son Curtis Morgan.

Her carefully planned career quickly became refocused from insurance executive to full-time homemaker and mother, with four children under the age of five! Her leadership skills found a place as room mother, Cub Scout leader, Brownie leader, Sunday School teacher, birthday party hostess and pet caregiver to the menagerie of critters Bryan and the children had over the years.

In addition to her keen business sense, Ada Betty was also very creative and artistic.

As a young mother, she made beautiful wedding cakes, which was challenging with four young children and no air conditioning in the South Texas heat! She was a talented seamstress and loved fashion, sewing exquisite dresses and even pageant gowns for her two daughters. She taught both daughters how to sew and Lisa now teaches sewing classes for adults and children.

Bryan’s Aunt Vola introduced Ada Betty to the art of china painting and she found artistic expression in painting lovely porcelain pieces. She was a member of the Hill Country Porcelain Art Guild for many years. Ada Betty also loved to entertain and was known for being a fun hostess and a fabulous cook! Her peach cobbler and chicken curry were always in demand!

She was a devout Christian and lifelong Baptist Church member. In addition to active church participation, Ada Betty was active in the Gideon’s International Auxiliary, PEO International Women’s Organization, American Cancer Society and other philanthropic endeavors. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother, gracious hostess and kind friend. She walked through life with beauty and elegance.

Ada Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband

Bryan in January 2020, her parents J.C. & Edith Dunn, twin granddaughters Emily & Elizabeth Chesky, sister Carolee McBeth, brother James Dunn and nephew Mark Dunn.

She is lovingly remembered by son Ken (Bonnie) of Pipe Creek, TX, daughter Karen (Michael Parkman) of Houston, TX, daughter Lisa (Jim Morrow) of McAllen, TX, son Curtis of Kerrville, TX; six grandchildren: Morgan, Jeffrey, Caitlin, Taylor, Lauren (Kyle Gottardy), and Megan; one great-granddaughter Aubrey, nieces Debbie (Jeremy Reiley, son Hunter) and Vivian, nephews Fletcher, Lowell, Clinton, Travis and other extended family members.

The family received friends and relatives on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home.

A graveside service was held Friday, July 9, 2021 in the Mausoleum Chapel at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, Texas, where she was laid to rest beside her dear Bryan in the family plot.

First Baptist Church, La Feria There is a land of the living and a land of the dead and the bridge is love, the only survival, the only meaning.” Thorton Wilder While following the news of recovery and rescue efforts at the collapsed Surfside Florida condo, I remembered that line from “The Bridge of San Luis Rey.” In Wilder’s novel an ancient Peruvian bridge collapses, claiming the lives of those who were crossing it. A friar who was not on the bridge when it fell begins an investigation to understand why some died and others like himself did not.

Erick De Moura survived the collapsing condo because he was not there. The night before, his girlfriend Fernanda Figueiredo convinced him to stay with her rather than return home to his condo. Like the friar in Wilder’s novel, De Moura stands with the living before the tragedy rather than lie with the victims beneath it. Why? Wilder is correct, there are no clear explanations for who survives and who does not survive the collapse of bridges or condos. In the end there are two groups, the living and the dead. The only meaning, the only thing between the living and the dead is love. Saint Paul said it like this, “These three remain, faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love.

travel and made numerous trips abroad throughout the course of their marriage.

One notable experience they had while globetrotting was an impromptu invitation to Queen Elizabeth’s Birthday Celebration at Buckingham Palace in the summer of 1975.

As the story goes, Ada Betty and Bryan had to make a mad dash to Harrod’s to buy “dress code appropriate attire” and a “ladies’ hat” in order to attend the event. On another trip, as dedicated Christians, the two of them enjoyed visiting the Holy Land. Apparently impressed with Ada Betty’s negotiating prowess, a local shop keeper offered Bryan “seven camels in exchange for his wife.”

J.C. Dunn, Ada Betty’s father, built a family cabin at Alto Frio Baptist Encampment in Leakey, Texas, when she was a girl and the young Finley family spent most summers there. Those were idyllic days of swimming in the refreshing Frio River, hiking, picking peaches & enjoying her scrumptious peach cobbler.

The Hill Country was the family’s respite from the hot Rio Grande Valley summers, and in 1971 Bryan and Ada Betty moved the family to Kerrville, Texas.

Astros are Scary Good pitching trade this month or fall out of the playoffs.

The prolific offence of the Astros has been talked about for most of the season.

Also well documented is their quality but not stellar starting pitching and their mediocre bullpen. Bullpen can be improved by the shortening the rotation in the postseason or of course by trade. I do not see a ace starter being a legit trade target for the Astros this season.

But here is something that is not talked about much.

So far this season, the Astros have gotten up for competition. Some players like the big stage. All teams have players they think are like that. But here are some real numbers. The Astros are 40-19 against teams with records over .500. That is an amazing stat. Against top level competition the Astros are at their best. While this does mean that the Astros are 13-14 against teams with a losing record, and that is not what you want to see from a great team. The fact is, no teams with losing records are going to be in the playoffs.

So far this season the Astros have shown they can handle the best teams in the MLB. Trades will probably make some of those teams stronger come August. But the Astros have to have a lot of confidence going into the second half of the season.

Ultimately winning baseball games is scoring more runs than your opponent. The Astros are in a league of their own in this category. Their season total run differential is +140 a the time of writing this article.

Lions Show Promise at 7v7

By KEVIN NARRO La Feria News COLLEGE STATIONThe Lions made their fourth appearance at the state 7-on-7 tournament last month in College Station.

The Lions went in 2015,16, 19 and 2021.

While La Feria remains one of the savvy 7-on-7 teams in the Rio Grande Valley, there were a few questions on some positions and who would step in and fill the roster for the fall.

In the past the Lions used their athleticism and speed. At the state tournament they showed that once more. Aaron Trevino displayed posie in the pocket and connected with his wide outs.

Without a 7-on-7 season last year due to Covid-19, La Feria feels a year later they were able to take advantage of the 7-on-

7 scene and use it as a building block for the fall.

"I think 7-on-7 allows us to have a better connection," Trevino said after their state tournament. "Compared to the start of the 7-on-7 season, we did improve.

We had some mishaps with the routes but this really helped with our routes and our offense."

"I think getting some of the younger guys some

experience will help us. We have some freshmen and sophomores that haven't played that much at the varsity level. Getting them that experience will help.

Playing 7-on-7 is hard in its own way having to play man to man on defense and less zone but I believe it will help in the long run.

Trevino showed some promise through the air with his younger brother Joaquin Trevino and Brandon Villueneva.

"Competing at the state tournament is fun and it has its challenges," Villueneva said. "We did pretty good coming up here. All the teams we played were really good competition and we battled.

Our receiving core is going to be good. We have some young guys who are stepping up and they are doing as much as they can and giving them their 100 percent."

The Next Chapter The Pet Ghost

"He said he wasn’t. He showed me exactly where they walked and he pointed out a scuff mark he saw after the shoes stopped."

"Why didn't you kids ever say anything?"

"Well, you and Dad were fighting a lot and we didn't want to make things worse."

That part was true. I turned the conversation to apologies for all of that.

“Oh! Mom, I have to go. Maddie just marked on the sofa with a permanent marker.”

The line went dead and I pushed the off button on the phone. I never noticed anything weird happen in the house when the kids were little, but maybe, like Donna pointed out, I was absorbed with my own problems during that time. I had gone back to college and my marriage had become

intense.

However those stories were interesting and if the occasion came up, I thought I could work them in nicely.

All through the next few weeks I did have a steady stream of phone calls and a few visitors, just like I thought might happen. One woman, claiming to be a psychic, stayed for supper.

Ghostly hands served the meal and she was very happy.

"My dear, I sense that this is a very loving presence.

And I love that you are so comfortable with it." She tried to chat with my ghost who remained stubbornly quiet. *** "Channel Twelve News, Leslie Brite speaking."

"Yes, Ms. Brite. What can I do for you?" I turned away from the business account I had been working on.

One of the great perks of

being somewhat fluent with computers was being able to work from home.

"We have learned that you live in an actual haunted house and I want to interview you, maybe walk through the house with a live camera on Halloween."

So, my little prank had gone this far. "Well, I don't know, Ms. Brite. I'm kind of a private person."

“It would be such a fun Halloween story. I understand that this ghost is really quite pleasant. Why not share it with the rest of the city?"

I was glad she couldn't see me pinch myself to keep from laughing at her. "Well, I suppose it would like a little company. Okay, I'll do it." We talked a little longer and made the preparations.

How long could I keep this going? I didn't know, but I would enjoy it as long as it lasted.

Two days before Halloween Leslie Brite called back with a new development. She had invited a psychic to attend the walk through, and at 11:30 Halloween night, he would conduct a séance. She didn't ask my permission, simply told me what would happen.

Of course, I agreed, sipping some extra hot coffee to keep from laughing. "There was a psychic here before,” I said.

“She thought the spirit here felt very loving, happy, and comfortable."

"We'll see if Dr. Simon feels the same positive energy." We ended the call

and I went back to work on my accounts. *** The evening of October 31 came and my doorbell rang. I wore a pair of black jeans and a black sweater set in keeping with the mood.

Ms. Brite came in with a nice looking man, fifty-ish, and the cameraman and light man tagged along behind her. I suddenly had the idea that my house might be a little small for an entire crew.

"Ms. Mason --" she began.

"Dora. Call me Dora."

Leslie and the gentleman smiled. "Dora. This is Dr. Barry Simon. He's the psychic who will be holding the séance tonight."

I held out my hand, a little apprehensive that I had to put on this show for him. He was a nice looking man and I felt a small amount of color rise to my cheeks. If only we could have met somewhere else . . .

"Good to meet you, Dr. Simon."

"Good to meet you, too.

Please, call me Barry." His voice was quiet.

Leslie introduced a young woman who followed her around taking notes on a steno pad. Her name was Emily and she had a Bluetooth phone in her ear listening to the rest of the crew sitting in a van in my driveway. The cameraman began setting up and Leslie looked at Emily’s notes.

Barry walked around eyeing my little knick-knacks as if he searched for something specific. A couple of times I caught him gazing at me

and then turning back to whatever he was examining on the shelf. I wondered what he thought of me.

While the camera crew set up and tested their equipment, Leslie sat in the chair across from me where David had been sitting when this whole thing started.

"Are you nervous?" she asked.

"A little fluttery, but not too bad."

She smiled. The sound guy added microphone buttons to our necklines, then he went out to the van.

"What I'll do here is ask a few questions about your experiences, then you’ll take us on a tour. If you see or hear anything while we're here, please point it out to us."

Port of Brownsville feeding Steel Slab to Ternium’s New Hot Rolling Mill at Pesqueria (Port of Brownsville)

To date, 32 vessels have called on the port to deliver more than 1.6 million metric tons of steel slab from Brazil and Russia to feed the new hot rolling mill.

Steel is now rolling off Ternium’s new state-of-the-art hot rolling mill in Pesqueria, Mexico.

The new hot rolling mill, located at the Ternium Industrial Center outside of Monterrey, has produced its first two coils, the company announced in May. “This is a very important milestone, as it is the result of the effort of many people who invested their dedication all this time.

It’s a success for all the team”, said Cesar Jimenez, the company’s CEO. The new rolling mill, with an annual capacity of more than 4 million tons of hot-rolled products, will produce specialized steel for the automotive and white goods industries.

It includes the latest equipment in technol-

ogy and is 100 percent automated, with more than 6,000 sensors installed throughout the mill, which allows for excellent precision in its operations, the company said.

“The rolling mill represents the hope and the desire to enter new markets in order to meet and satisfy our clients’ needs,” said Paulo López, Rolling Mill Director of the Ternium Industrial Center.

All the steel slabs processed at the Pesqueria plant move through the Port of Brownsville. To date, 32 vessels have called on the port to deliver more than 1.6 million metric tons of steel slab from Brazil and Russia to feed the new hot rolling mill. Gulf Stream Marine has partnered with Ternium to provide the cargo handling opera-

tions at the port.

Under construction is a major terminal development at the Port of Brownsville to maximize the efficient loading of railcars for steel slab shipments to feed Ternium’s mill. On-port rail service is provided by the Brownsville Rio Grande International Railway, operated

by OmniTRAX. The shortline railroad connects with Kansas City Southern de Mexico for steel slab shipments to the hot rolling mill operations at Pesqueria.

The new plant is part of phase 2 of the Ternium Industrial Center, along with the galvanizing and painting lines, which started operations in 2019. In total, $2.5 billion were invested for phases 1 and 2 of the Ternium Industrial Center, where around 1,000 employees work.
