Texas Opens COVID-19 Vaccination to All Adults on March 29

Los Fresnos soccer prepping for postseason

Texas DHSH - All adults will be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine in Texas beginning Monday, March 29. The Texas Department of State Health Services expects vaccine supplies to increase next week, and providers in multiple parts of the state have made great strides in vaccinating people in the current priority groups. The state’s Expert Vaccine Allocation Panel recommended opening vaccination to everyone who falls under the current Food and Drug Administration emergency

use authorizations to protect as many Texans as possible. “We are closing in on 10 million doses administered in Texas, and we want to keep up the momentum as the vaccine supply increases,” said Imelda Garcia, DSHS associate commissioner for laboratory and infectious disease services and the chair of the Expert Vaccine Allocation Panel. “As eligibility opens up, we are asking providers to continue to prioritize people who are the most at risk of severe disease, hospitalization and death

– such as older adults.” DSHS has directed vaccine providers to prioritize people 80 years old or older when scheduling appointments and accommodate anyone in that age group who presents for vaccination, whether or not they have an appointment, by immediately moving them to the front of the line. That will ensure vaccination of anyone 80 or older with as small a burden on themselves as possible. Also next week, DSHS will launch a website to allow people to register

for a shot through some public health providers. The public will be able to enroll in the Texas Public Health Vaccine Scheduler to identify upcoming vaccine clinics hosted by DSHS or a participating local health department and be notified when new clinics and appointments become available. People can continue to find additional providers though the DSHS Vaccine Information page at dshs. texas.gov/covidvaccine. Online registration will be the best option for most people. For those for whom that is not an

option, DSHS will launch a toll-free number to provide assistance making an appointment with a participating provider or locating another provider that has vaccine available. To date, Texas has administered more than 9.3 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine, equating to more than 6 million people with at least one dose and more than 3 million fully vaccinated. Most vaccines are authorized for people 18 years old and older; the FDA has authorized the Pfizer vaccine for use in people 16 and older.

Texas Folklife Announces the 15th Annual Big Squeeze Accordion Competition About the Program This is the 15th year for The Big Squeeze Accordion Contest and we are so excited to showcase young accordionists from (956) 346-3034 across Texas! The Big Squeeze is a statewide contest where youth accordion players showcase their performance (956)545-8520 abilities in FOUR main accordion genre categories: Polka, Zydeco, Cajun, and Conjunto. The Polka genre will include German, Czech, and Polish traditions. Zydeco will include Creole, and Conjunto will include Conjunto, Norteño and Tejano. Please contact Texas Folklife if you are unsure of which category your music fits. ***NEW FOR 2021***

This year, the Zydeco & Cajun categories will be two separate categories to give deeper focus on the distinct history of each. Also new in 2021, the Cajun and Zydeco categories will be open to Louisiana residents ages 25 and under. The Conjunto age categories have changed slightly to be 16 and Under and 17-21. There have been many more younger contestants in the last few years and we want to balance the competition and be able to award an equal amount of semi-finalists and finalists in both age categories. Finally, in 2021 the Big Squeeze will be entirely virtual to maintain the health and safety of

our participants, their families and our staff. Other changes made in recent years: we will have the addition of the Conjunto Semi-Finals Round, due to the overwhelming amount of conjunto entries in recent years. We will also award a small amount of Rising Star awards to talented players that don’t happen to make it to the finals, especially in the younger age brackets. This is to further give recognition to the difference in skill at different ages. These recipients will be notified after the semifinals on April 17 and will be eligible to apply again in 2022 for the contest. Contestants can have one

Ask Our Dentists

Q: I recently saw my dentist back home & found that there are different types of cleanings. I required a more advanced cleaning. Can you explain the different cleanings in a basic & easy to understand way?

by DR. ADAM LALONDE

Dr. Adam Lalonde

There are different types of cleanings depending on whether patient has a healthy mouth, gingivitis or periodontal disease. Bi-Annual Routine Cleaning/ Polish: The most common type of routine cleaning reserved for patients with healthy mouths. Typically done every 6 months but can be recommended every 3 months for some patients.

Extensive “Debridement” Cleaning: This type of cleaning is usually only necessary when a patient has not had his/her teeth cleaned in more than a year, or if there is heavy calculus/mineral deposits under the gum line fused to the tooth & roots. This type of cleaning requires a longer appointment. Scaling & Root Planing: This type of cleaning is more invasive. It is necessary in moderate-advanced stages of gum disease when bone loss & pocketing occur & when mineral deposits have fused deeper down the root surface. So there you have it, a gamut of teeth cleaning possibilities. Your dentist will recommend the cleaning that is appropriate for you after a thorough exam & x-rays. Once your teeth have been cleaned & returned to “normal” state of hygiene, it is important to keep up with regular dental check-ups as recommended.
