Travelling to and from The Knox School

Getting to School

YEAR 7 CENTRE

The commute to and from school is a daily undertaking that for all families and involves considerable organisation. With more than 800 students, over 200 staff and an unpredictable number of visitors seeking to enter our grounds, the management of vehicle and pedestrian arrival and departure is an important part of ensuring student safety.

THE FOUNDERS’ BUILDING

Internal Driveway: The internal driveway has a divided lane between the entrance at Burwood Highway and the Visitor Car Park. Cars bound for the car park are asked to position themselves in the right lane; those bound for the Kiss and Drop area or seeking to drive elsewhere in the School are asked to position themselves in the left lane.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Daniel Rechtman INFORMATION

Roundabout: The roundabout located at the Gazebo provides a drop off opportunity for parents. Exit from the roundabout is easiest via College Close.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Reception Car Park: Road arrows are marked at the Reception Car Park to indicate a left turn only expectation for vehicles seeking to use this car park. Cars having entered from Burwood Highway and intending to use the Reception car park are required to exit via College Close. Similarly, cars entering from College Close will not be able to access the Reception car park.

Students are not to exit vehicles in the driveway regardless of whether cars have ceased moving; this is extremely dangerous.

Morning Arrival

Kiss&Drop

The peak time for vehicular traffic is between 8:20 and 8:40am on Monday to Friday. During these twenty minutes, it is not uncommon for cars to be forced to queue along Burwood Highway for entry to the school grounds. Access from College Close is consistently a quicker option.

Strategies for Morning Arrival

Junior School

Arrival Time: The Junior School and Robert Read Learning Centre are open for students from 8.20am. Supervision is provided outside the Junior School building and in the Robert Read Learning Centre from 8.20am. Classrooms are open from 8:30am each day. Arriving prior to 8:25am is a recommended option.

Doors for the ELC open at 8.25am.

Kiss and Drop: The Kiss and Drop car parks are marked in yellow and are available for parents to drop children to make their own way to the Junior School building. Cars may not be parked or left unattended in these car parks. During peak drop off times kiss and drop zones are extended to three lanes

ELC and Prep Families: The most appropriate car park is the Reception Car Park. The carpark located adjacent to Burwood Hwy may also be used for ELC and Prep parking during morning drop off. Families are encouraged to make their departure promptly following the drop off of their children to enable others to make use of the limited number of car parks available.

Visitor Car Park: The Visitor Car Park adjacent to Burwood Highway remains a kiss and drop spot between 8.00am - 8.45am

Kiss and Drop is the priority rather than parking and walking children to the Junior School.

Older Students

Arrival Time: The Library and school buildings are open from 8.00am each morning for students.

College Close: It is the School’s preference that older Junior School and Senior students are either dropped in Merryn Grove to walk the final short distance to school or at the roundabout having entered via College Close. Families of these students are encouraged not to use the Burwood Highway entrance to the school at peak times.

Note: Victoria Police have advised that parking along Burwood Hwy between the school gates is strictly prohibited and fines will apply.

Afternoon Pick Up

Early Learning Centre: Parents of students in the Early Learning Centre must park and collect their children via the external doors to the classrooms

Waiting: Parents of children in Prep to Year 12 are discouraged from arriving well before the end of the school day. As the number of cars waiting increases the internal roads become blocked and traffic builds to Burwood Highway, potentially creating a significant hazard along Burwood Highway. Please arrange to pick up students in Merryn Grove where age appropriate.

Tuesdays: The conclusion to the school day, Tuesdays, creates the greatest volume of traffic on the school site at a single moment as Early Learning Centre, Junior School and Senior School students conclude classes at similar times. On Tuesdays, Senior School parents are asked to delay their departure, offering priority to Early Learning Centre and Junior School parents; just 10 minutes makes a significant difference.

Junior School: Parents should wait outside the Junior School on the grassed area to collect students at the end of the day. Kiss & Go operates in the afternoon as well from 3:25pm. Please make your child’s class teacher aware of your wish to use this service and they will assist to have them ready for departure at Kiss&Go, on time, at 3:25pm.

Senior School: Families in the Senior School are encouraged to consider meeting students outside of the school grounds, along Merryn Grove, where traffic is considerably reduced.

BURWOOD HWY

Drive Carefully Be Patient

When travelling north or towards the Burwood Highway exit gates, we remind parents that turning right into the visitors’ carpark is dangerous and obstructs the traffic which is exiting the carpark, creating a jam along the exit road.

Please continue straight on through the exit gates. If for some reason you need to park and enter the school, please enter the carpark via the Burwood Highway entrance or park in the lower carpark.

Always be mindful of other drivers and pedestrians when driving on campus. Please be patient and courteous at all times.
