oming at the highpoint of the COVID-19 outbreak reminds us how much this crisis has disrupted the ‘normal’ physiotherapy, and how it will reshape physiotherapy practice. Physiotherapists have known crises before and thus the configuration of modern-day physiotherapy owes much to the physiotherapy responses to the earlier calamities.

For example, World War I played a huge role in cementing physiotherapists as the orthodox providers of physical rehabilitation in many countries, and the polio epidemics that ran through the first half of the 20th century gave birth to other professional bodies. However, there are some essential differences between health care in the last century and healthcare today.

A Well-Planned Change Physiotherapy in the last century mainly benefited from two distinctive external influences: • an established medical profession • the welfare state It means that previously when there had been epidemics or massive social upheavals, there was neither a common social safety net nor healthcare clinic to provide essential services for the population nor an established medical profession to partner it with. People had to fend for themselves.

However, all of it changed in the 20th century. Many developed countries today have sufficient resources to build welfare systems, amongst other things, and can provide the infrastructure to support the training and development of thousands of healthcare professionals, including physiotherapists.

The future of physiotherapy is shaping right in front of our eyes with the help of advances in technologies like AR, VR, AI, 3D-printing, and robotics. An independent study claims that: • By the year 2040, every human will have their own hyperpersonalized, constantly updated, instruction manual covering health, mind, and whole body– with real-time diagnostics, x-ray vision, and a color-coded guidance system to pain and ailments. And physiotherapists will use this data to perform and plan treatments.

Through its Erasmus program, it gives the golden opportunity to the students to study abroad for a more rounded global educational experience. Students have been to Canada, Poland, Lithuania and various developed nations of the European Union as well. It’s a mandate for all interns of the college to undertake a research project, this endeavour orients them to the concept of research and evidence-based practice.

The institute also has strong partnerships with renowned hospitals and institutes that add depth to existing courses, enabling the alignment of its strengths with the needs of industry, and making its courses more placement oriented.

These partnerships open up employment opportunities for students, build a profile for academics and provide impact and application of research outcomes. An annual career fair is organized where various hospitals, physiotherapy set-ups and gyms are catered for placement of the graduating students. In the year 2019, more than a hundred students secured jobs through this career fair.

More to Come Parul Institute of Physiotherapy has been updating the syllabus to cater to the current requirement of the physiotherapy field, keeping the global scenario in interest.

Advanced equipment such as Balance Master, hydrotherapy equipments are installed in the institute and advance gait and motion lab will be setup soon. The Department of Physiotherapy was founded in 2001 by the Department of Sports Sciences, Punjabi University, Patiala, and has been autonomous since 2008. There are currently three courses in the School, namely Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT), Master of Physiotherapy (MPT), and Ph.D. of Physiotherapy.

Bachelor in Physiotherapy (BPT) is a four-year undergraduate degree with a six-month mandatory rotational internship, a Master in Physiotherapy (MPT), a postgraduate degree with specializations in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, Neurological Diseases, Physical injury recovery, and cardiopulmonary recovery.

disciplinary workshops, and four CMEs yearly, which involve participants from the global forum. All students are invited to take part in all these activities and to present research papers and posters that make them more excited to learn about new findings and to try interesting topics in their subject.

Furthermore, technological developments in modern modalities enable recovery approaches that are, in effect, helpful to society. Such devices minimize recovery time and enable the physiotherapist to handle more patients on a regular basis. Students are introduced to these technological advances by visiting and conducting special sessions at the conferences of various new companies, in which they describe how new modalities or new advances in machines are useful for the treatment of the patient. The Department makes heavy use of the Mini Cox scale for the measurement of different situations.

The Institute has its own placement group, which runs around the clock to offer first job options for students who complete their degree. The Department offers support for placement in schools, universities upon graduation, and master’s degrees. Future Roadmap For forthcoming years, the Department has an ambitious roadmap for the future, with the first to be partnered with U.S. Universities to offer a Physiotherapy Doctoral Program. It is working towards the largest multidisciplinary physiotherapy hospital to be equipped with residential and non-residential patient care facilities and to be financed by the government.

In addition, the Department is sponsored by DST-FIST in 2019 for the next five years to improve the facilities by building a digital lab and renovating existing research laboratories. With respect to the syllabus, the Department has a committee that is actively working on rendering this syllabus a multi-disciplinary syllabus such that, in the coming period, students will properly comprehend alternate methodologies in this degree.
