Established in 2008, Assam Don Bosco University, Guwahati is the first University in India of the worldwide Don Bosco Society, present across 132 countries serving 15 million young students. In October 2018, the University was awarded ‘University of the Year’ (among universities in India in existence for 1-10 years) by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry at the 14th FICCI Higher Education Summit 2018 held in New Delhi. There are 2533 students on campus, 4703 students under distance education, and over 8000 students pursuing free Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

As the University is situated in a picturesque landscape of myriad flora and fauna, a checklist of species available in the campus has been prepared with record of endemic and IUCN list of threatened species. Further, a new country record of spider has been made from the campus. The research areas of students include arachnid, avian, amphibian, piscine, and plankton diversity.

A visionary personality, Dr. Stephen Mavely is the Founder Vice Chancellor of Assam Don Bosco University. He plays a pivotal role in the University by continuously steering its development to create a niche for itself among national and international institutions of higher education.

He has spent over four decades in educating young minds with his outstanding talents in a variety of disciplines like education, literature, media, psychology, communication, theology, management, and pastoral work. He was appointed by the Government of India as a consultant and member of the expert committee for the North-East at the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. He has also served as a member of the executive board of the All India Don Bosco Educational Board since 1988 and has been the President of the All India Association for Christian Higher Education, an association that has over 400 colleges as its members.

In the year 2014, he was awarded the Education Evangelist of the Year Award by SkillTree Global Knowledge Consortium and in 2016, he received the award for the ‘100 Most Inuential Vice-Chancellors’ in Asia-Pacic’ region by World Education Congress. In 2018, Stephen was conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award by Confederation of Indian Universities on the occasion of 4th International Conference on Environment and Ecology held at Guwahati. Also in 2018, he was awarded the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Education Award’.

hile analyzing the effects of radio frequency heating on hypothermia in the year 1941, Canadian electrical engineer John Hopps read that if the heart stops beating due to an acute drop in temperature, it could successfully be brought back to life artificially using mechanical or electrical stimulation.

This research was carried forward to develop the first ever cardiac defibrillation machine which was primarily then used by Hopps to regulate and consequently revive a dog’s heart. By the mid-80s, artificial cardiac pacemaker installation became a recognized routine procedure saving thousands of lives all over the world.

Serendipity through inspired insights has often been regarded as the key to scientific breakthroughs, additory advances and an inquisitive mind looks beyond the anomaly considering the results worthy of a follow up. Creating novel opportunities for researches around the globe, advanced technologies being introduced time and again have disparate and diverse applications from the originally intended conventional configurations combining the scientific laws of nature.

The discovery of the Green Florescent Protein (GFP) led to the concept of genes being used as expression reporters modified in the form of biosensors when introduced in organisms via transgenic channels.

Considering its widespread potential to satisfy the emerging needs of researchers, different mutants of GFP were engineered. The first major developmental refinement was a single point mutation (S65T) that was reported by Roger Tsein in Nature, 1995. This mutation was known to remarkably advance the spectral characteristics of GFP and its photostability causing a shift of the excitation peak to 488 nm, peak emission at 509 nm. In 2000, a genetic ‘circuit’ was created in Escherichia coli that caused the cells to blink light in a lighthouse. The underlying idea stated to transform microorganisms to behave like microchips of tiny programable computers. The circuit, “Repressilator” comprised of three repressor genes, one of which turned on the gene for GFP which upon activation emits green light.

Consequently, researchers crafted a ‘toggle switch’ to oscillate the circuit

and alter its pattern based on the culture growth conditions.

Mendelian genetics observes the fact that trillions of cells of an organism have the genotype which is just as same as that of the single celled zygote. The cloning of Dolly, a Finn-Dorset ewe reaffirms the carriage of genes and genotypic consistency.

Molecular biology and genetics of bacteria and phages aided the acceptance of cell interactions as an essential share of normal embryogenesis. Based on neoteric findings, it has now been realized that most of the embryonic cells of arthropods and nematodes make developmental decisions based on the chemical signals that they receive from other cells; much like vertebrates. stablished in 1948, Sree Narayana College, Kollam is one of the earliest and the greatest centers of higher education in the whole state of Kerala. Affiliated to the University of Kerala, the college is managed by the Sree Narayana Trusts, Kollam. Bearing in letter and spirit the name of Sree Narayana Guru (1854-1928), the great saint-philosopher, social reformer, and mystic poet, the college was started by S.N.D.P. Yogam. Along with him, the able and inspiring leader R. Sankar (1909-1972) took it forward with 505 students at the intermediate level. The consecutive year, it was upgraded to a degree college and in 1957 it attained membership in the prestigious club of postgraduate colleges. The college offers 17 undergraduate, 14 postgraduate and a P.G. Diploma Programmes. Out of which, eight of the postgraduate departments are approved research centers as well.

The institution further provides facilities (both infrastructure and faculty) for conducting contact classes of the correspondence courses under the University of Kerala and counseling of IGNOU study programmes coordinated by the IGNOU study center. Since its inception, the institute has not only spearheaded the upliftment of the socially and educationally backward sections of our society but has also

There are few Indian scientists who have done so much in so many different fields, and have done it with such fervor. Due to the efforts, NASA named a minor planet after his name called 5178 Pattazhy planet in 2008. He is the first Keralite, who got planet name and became a part of the world history. Later, he became popular as one who could explain science in layman's language. His appearance in the television and newspaper made him almost a public icon. He developed his own unique style of explaining environmental issues and science.

The threat of old infectious diseases is persisting. These diseases are the second largest killers in the world. In addition to this, the new emerging diseases are posing serious problems. New communicable diseases and drug-resistant infectious diseases are also increasing.

To solve the societal problems, well timed and targeted innovation is required to boost productivity, which increases the economic growth. The scope of innovation, how it is changing, as well as where it is occurring is based on updated research and data.

Poverty, urbanization, immigration, travel and trade encroachment of animal territories, concentrated livestock production-causing the spread of infectious organisms to more people in less time than ever before and could trigger new epidemics.

The driving force behind much of the recent boom in biology science is technological development. There are immense diversity and rapid evolution of technologies with relevance to (or impact on) the life sciences enterprise.

Climate change is also affecting the food security. It has an impact on human health. Increased crop failure, new patterns of pests and diseases, lack of appropriate seeds and planting material and loss of livestock are the problems to be solved. People living on the coasts and flood plains, mountains, dry lands and arctic are at risk.
