dress shopping! Buying your wedding dress is one of the most fun parts of planning (seriously, how hard could trying on gorgeous gowns be?), but there can be some potentially stressful situations (hello, sticker shock!). Here are the tips I give all my friends when they’re about to start shopping. this one has more embellishments so it requires extra labor (left, $1,148; right, $2,998)

Maggie sottero

Brainstorm your style Consider your date, venue and what shapes flatter your figure.

have a small, positive posse Avoid bringing your entire entourage or well-known critics of your personal style (I’m looking at you, Grandma!).

It’s Not just About The Dress You’re already shopping for a gown—keep up the planning momentum! Our new mini-book box set (perfectly sized for reading on the go) is full of amazing photos and ideas for your cake, flowers, details and vows. ($20,

Pack heels and a strapless bra Trying on a strapless white gown with a regular black bra and Vans isn’t going to be much help.

Go on a Tuesday If you walk into a bridal salon on a Saturday afternoon, it can be super-busy—and insanely nerve-racking. Take a half day off and make an appointment during the week.

Trust your gut Just like they say about your spouse, when you find “the one,” you’ll know.

Eat breakfast Being “hangry” is not helpful when trying on tons of dresses.

let the salesperson do her job A dress may look better on you than on a hanger. Go to a shop with experienced pros and try on their suggestions—you may be surprised! (Hanger, $22,

Get your groove on If you’ll be dancing a ton on your day, test out your moves in a potential pick.

know your price Don’t bother trying on a $5,000 dress if your budget is $2,000—that’s just unnecessary torture.

Start ASAP You need at least six to eight months for dress shopping because most gowns are made to order, so get going!

What’s your favorite trend at the moment? And any you wish would take a rest? My favorite trend right now is negative space. I love a clean, open design—opposite to all the tchotchkes of years past. It’s great for a tight budget because less stuff is needed to fill up a table. And I’m ready for the muted era to sit down for a little while—I miss color. @daughterofdesign

Lee’s color palette pops with coral and amber, p. 282

What was your own wedding gown like? I chose a very traditional dress. It was a silk white duchess satin dropped-waist gown, off the shoulders, with lace appliqués and a bustled skirt. I also had a long cathedral veil to match. It was the third dress I tried on! @m_lhuillier

NANCY RONES, travel contributor

Where did you go on your own honeymoon? We bounced around France. The highlight was the cobblestone village of Eze on the French Riviera. It charmed us the most, with its storybook looks and amazing views of the Mediterranean. The Montmartre district of Paris came in a close second. @nancyrones

Check out this Pa risian suite, plus more sexy sp ots on p. 538

What did you splurge and save on at your own wedding? Music is really important to my husband, so we splurged on a great band. Flowers were less of a priority—we opted for simple arrangements and lots of candles. We also used credit cards (responsibly) where we could, which gave us the benefit of points to use toward our honeymoon flights. @alexavontobel

______ /______ /______

______ /______ /______

Think about when you’d like to have your wedding (the question everyone will ask about 20 minutes after you get engaged). Nail down a budget and go to TheKnot .com/budget. We’ll help you figure out how much you should spend on flowers, stationery and your day-of looks. While you’re in organizational-planning mode, download The Knot Wedding Planner app. It’s a super-cool way to research venues, keep your contacts and inspiration boards updated, draft your guest list and take it all with you. Visit ceremony and reception locations. This is the first big decision; you’ll be amazed at how everything else falls into place once you check it off your list— including the definite date and time.

Book your florist, photographer, videographer, musicians, cake baker and other pros, such as a rental company. Plan the ceremony with your officiant; it’s the reason you’re having this party, so don’t wait too long. Discuss religious requirements, like premarital counseling.

9 to11 months DATE:

Order your gown and your veil and schedule fittings (for six weeks and one to two weeks before the wedding). It’s also time for the groom to choose his clothes. Create a “look fab” plan, including facials, teeth whitening and haircuts. Salon days are a hard part of planning (not!). Have engagement photos taken so you can get comfortable with your photographer. Start planning your honeymoon. Thinking about Hawaii? Florida? Check out our fave trips ever at Choose the bridesmaid dresses and have your bridesmaids order them and schedule fittings. Groomsmen should also be told what to wear. Set aside blocks of rooms at nearby hotels.

______ /______ /______

Decide whom you want to officiate your ceremony and book him/her. Find a stationer and order your savethe-dates (this is really happening!). If your venue doesn’t have an inhouse caterer, research and interview candidates and select one. Register for gifts. (This is another really good reason to put together a wedding website: It will discreetly tell guests where you’re registered.) Ask your picks for bridesmaids and groomsmen if they’re up for being in your wedding party. Start your search for your dress.

Create your wedding website to give guests important info, like which hotel you’ll have a room block at and directions from the ceremony to the reception. Include some fun details too, like your proposal story. (Get a free customizable one at Book any pros you just have to have, like a top-rated DJ or wedding planner. Get your engagement ring appraised and then insured ASAP. (Trust us—this is one to-do you don’t want to delay.)

Send save-the-dates at the six-month mark. Iron out the rehearsal dinner details, like the time and location. Order the invitations and thank-you notes. Reserve venues for the welcome party, after-party and next-day brunch. Book a day-of coordinator (if you don’t have a full-service planner and a day-of planner isn’t included with your venue). Purchase wedding insurance (if you’re planning on getting it). >>

Finalize your flower proposal with your florist. (Will you go with roses or ranunculus, gerbera daisies or gardenias?) Address your invitations or hand them off to your calligrapher for her to finish. Finalize the rental list (tables, chairs) with the caterer or rental company. Book your honeymoon, and don’t forget to also reserve a room for the night of your wedding. Schedule dance lessons (worth it if your first dance is already stressing you out). Complete your cake order and order the groom’s cake (if you’re having one). Schedule your beauty trials and book hairstylist(s) and makeup artist(s).

Send out wedding invitations at the six- to eight-week mark (RSVPs should be due one month before the wedding). Work on your ceremony vows, especially if you’re writing them yourselves. Buy your wedding day accessories— it’s time to check off your “something old, new, borrowed and blue.” Order or start DIY-ing your ceremony programs. Buy your guest book, a nice pen and any supplies you’ll need for your escort card display. Confirm your hotel room blocks. Have your first dress fitting—don’t forget your shoes and underwear. Write thank-you notes for gifts as they arrive (you’ll thank us later). Do a food tasting (yum!) and finalize the menu with your caterer.

Finalize your ceremony details with your officiant, including your vows. Compile a must-take photo list for your shooter (keep it under a dozen so you get the shots you really want). Finish assembling ceremony programs (or pick them up from your stationer or printer). Create a day-of schedule. Purchase presents for your parents, attendants and each other (you deserve it after all this planning). Put together welcome baskets. Buy some fun books and cute new clothes for your honeymoon. >>

Missing RSVPs? Follow up now! Once you’ve got it, share your final head count with the caterer, cake baker and site manager. Give your caterer the final seating chart (and have a glass of bubbly to celebrate finishing up this puzzle). Pass on requests from your pros to the site manager (like a table for the DJ). Print or write your escort cards (or send them to your calligrapher). Have your last dress fitting (and get butterflies thinking about the next time you’ll put your gown on). Confirm all final payment amounts, details and deliveries with your pros. Double-check the day-of schedule and contact list; distribute to wedding party, parents and wedding pros. Write your wedding toasts. Pick up your marriage license (the most fun you can have at a government office). Give “must-play” or “don’t-play” song list to DJ or bandleader. Include your first, father-daughter and mother-son dances. Get final hair trim and color touch-up. Arrange for transportation for out-oftown guests who aren’t renting cars.

Pack an overnight bag for the wedding night (include outfits for any day-after events, like a good-bye brunch). Leave a copy of your honeymoon itinerary with your family and other important people, like your pet sitter. Give tips for your wedding pros to an attendant (or planner) to distribute. Steam your dress or suit if wrinkled. Give gifts to your parents and each other. Touch base with the ceremony and reception sites one more time to go over the schedule and any last-minute details. Plan the processional/recessional. Confirm last-minute details, like flower and cake deliveries. Get a fresh mani and pedi. Bring all ceremony accessories, like the unity candle, to the site. Give the marriage license to your officiant (this is one detail you definitely don’t want to forget). expert Q& A

ask carley Our cofounder answers your questions.

Q Do I need to cover my tattoo? A Not if you don’t want to. Occasionally, a house of worship or officiant might ask you to cover tattoos out of respect, but these days that’s pretty uncommon. That said, if you decide to cover yours, do it either with clothing or makeup—a yellow-based scar concealer, like Dermablend, works well. Then just wash it off before you head to the reception.

ink inquiry

of couples say tattoos are totally wedding appropriate

Q Do our wedding invitations really need both an inner and outer envelope?

invitation issue

A Not really. Mail used to be carried by hand, which meant it often arrived dirty. The outer envelope would be tossed and the inner envelope would be presented to the recipient (that’s why you write the guest’s name on the inner envelope too!). Today, envelopes can still get beat up on their way to your guests, so an extra layer will ensure your invitation arrives in pristine condition (which you’ll appreciate if you’ve splurged on your invites or are having a formal wedding). But if you want to save some money, or are trying to be more eco-friendly, one envelope is fine. from top: toko ohmori; Heather Waraksa

 Q  A

cool clothes

We’re getting married in the Bahamas in August and it’s going to be insanely hot. What can my fiancé wear instead of a tux? Ask the coordinator for your venue what other grooms have worn in the past. One classic option is a light linen suit—it’s a super-stylish, cool and comfortable pick for the tropics. If he’s worried about wrinkles, a light cotton suit is another good choice; it won’t crease nearly as easily as a linen one.

Q My fiancé and I (a gay couple) are struggling with what to do for a last name. Any ideas?

the name game

A It’s a personal choice, but making your last names match is a great way to show off your new union to the world. You can hyphenate your two last names, come up with a new, mutual last name using the letters from both of your names or just pick something that best represents your new family. >>

expert Q& A

Q Are all-inclusive resorts really a better deal than a traditional resort? A It depends on the resort—and you. Sometimes, all-inclusive really means it includes everything, from each item you eat and drink to all the activities you do. Other times, resorts will still charge you for top-shelf liquor, higher-priced food items (think: lobster and steak) and extras like motorized water sports. Not only do you want to look for a resort that includes all the stuff you want to do, you should also consider how much you really drink or eat. If you’re more likely to order a salad or burger and a glass of house white or a beer rather than the surf and turf with a bottle of champagne, you might be better off going to an à la carte resort. This is particularly true if you don’t drink alcohol.

vacation budget

Q My friends say because I’m an older bride (I just turned 32) I should have a smaller wedding. Is that really true? A Um, your friends are kind of rude—and a little wrong! You’re not actually an older bride—the average age today is 29 for a bride and 31 for a groom, and that number is growing every year. But regardless of how old you are, your age should have no effect on the size of your guest list. In fact, you may have a bigger budget because you may have more money to contribute as a couple.

guest list query

Q How do I let my bridesmaids know they have to pay for their own dresses?

dress dilemma

A The key is to be totally up front about it from the beginning. Bring your bridesmaids dress shopping with you, and when you’re looking at a particular dress, ask if you think it would be out of their budget. If you’re genuinely concerned that being in your wedding might be a financial burden for someone, look for dresses that are relatively inexpensive, or choose a color you like and have them select their own dresses in the same shade, so they can spend as much as they want.

of Knotties are 25 or older

Q What age do you consider too young— or too old—to be a flower girl? A As a rule of thumb, flower girls should be between four and eight years old. Sometimes “mature” two- and three-yearolds pull it off quite charmingly with a parent escorting them down the aisle. Trust us—even goofs like dumping all the petals at once or falling asleep make for pretty adorable photos. If the girl is a bit older, you might consider making her a junior bridesmaid. She can wear a dress in the same (or similar) style as the bridesmaids, walk down the aisle in the procession and stand at the altar with the other attendants.

flower girl age limit

Q Years ago, my dad said he wanted to pay for my wedding. Now that it’s here, my fiancé and I both make a better salary than he does. Should I still ask him even though I feel guilty about taking money from him? A Budgeting for your wedding is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do. You should have a heart-to-heart with your dad, telling him how much you’d appreciate anything he’d want to contribute but that you also have conflicting feelings about it. He may really want to help foot the bill for your wedding, or may feel comfortable letting you pay for it yourselves entirely. The most important thing right now is to talk about it and figure out exactly what everyone is contributing so you can set a budget—and get started with the more fun parts of planning!

budget guilt

Q When is the best time of day to shop for our wedding rings? A In the afternoon or evening. You definitely don’t want to finalize your wedding ring size first thing in the morning (because you retain salt from the night before), after you’ve just worked out or walked a lot (your fingers may swell), or when you’re extremely hot or cold. When you’re calm and relaxed (aka not after paying your catering deposit) and when your body temperature is normal is the best time to try on wedding bands.

size matters

Q Our friend says he wants his reading to be a surprise. Should we be worried? A Maybe. Let him know you’re working out the specifics of the ceremony, like how long it will run, and ask if he can give a loose overview of what he’ll be saying. If you’re concerned he may recite something totally inappropriate (and it sounds like you are), request that he speak with your officiant about the reading prior to the ceremony. Tell him you don’t want to ruin his surprise, but say something like, “Reverend Smith likes to have some control over his ceremonies.”

ceremony surprise

Q If only I attend the shower, should the thank-you notes be from just me or should they come from both of us? A Yes, the notes should be from the two of you. Whether or not you both attend the shower, these gifts will be used by each of you in your home. The exception might be for any gifts that are very clearly just for the bride, like a ring holder.

shower thank-yous

Q Who sits next to whom at the wedding party table? Is it boy/girl, or all the bridesmaids on one side and all the groomsmen on the other? A Traditionally, the bridal party head table is seated boy/girl, starting with the best man next to the bride and the maid of honor next to the groom. But you definitely don’t have to do it that way. You could seat all the women on the bride’s side and all the men on the groom’s, or just let everyone sit wherever they want.

money matters Wedding planning is intense. By comparison, organizing your finances should be cake. Here are the questions to ask, with answers from financial expert Alexa von Tobel. BY Christine Porretta

Q A K 110

should we file a joint tax return or not? Maybe. “If you and your partner are in a similar place financially—meaning your incomes are about the same and you don’t plan on itemizing expenses—consider filing jointly,” says Alexa von Tobel. “The biggest exceptions to filing jointly are when you have a major deduction, such as a medical bill that’s greater than 10 percent of your adjusted gross income [aka after taxes], or you have a lot of unearned income, such as investment or rental income.” Talk to your tax pro to see what will work best for your particular situation.

Q What’s the first step to buying a home? A Plan to save enough money to put 20 percent into a down payment for a home. “Once you know your dream home’s approximate cost, you can divide that total by the number of months until you’d like to purchase a home to find your per-month savings goal,” says von Tobel. “You can also set up automatic savings from your paycheck, so funds go straight into your home-ownership savings account.”

Q When should we start investing? A It’s simple: once you’ve tackled credit card debt, built an emergency fund of cash to last you six months and are on track for retirement savings. “Consider opening up an account at a discount brokerage and look out for low-fee funds, like ETFs (exchange traded funds),” von Tobel says.

Q Do we really need to tell each other exactly what we’re spending? A Yes, yes, yes. While you don’t have to dish about every single lunch out, larger purchases should always be talked about. “Forty percent of couples aged 25 to 55 say financial honesty is more important than being truthful about fidelity,” von Tobel says. Now’s also the time to talk about your goals and dreams— and how you’re going to pay for them. Q Should we get a joint bank account? A You should do what feels right for you two. The main advantage of having a joint account is you can easily pay shared expenses (from small ones, like your groceries or morning coffees, to big ones, such as a mortgage). You may also avoid minimum balance fees, since you’ll have more cash in one place. On the downside, you’re sharing your money. If your spouse wants to make a big purchase without talking to you, he or she can. Many couples do both—put some money into a joint account while also retaining separate ones.

Q What are the pros and cons of cosigning a credit card together? A “With a cosigned card, any debt your partner incurs will affect your personal financial record,” says von Tobel. “That said, if you and your partner both have high credit scores and no prior history of debt, cosigning a credit card could be an easy way to pay for joint expenses, while also earning rewards or cash back.” Simply being married won’t affect your credit—but your partner’s low credit score could hurt your ability to get a loan (including a mortgage) together. Q Should we pay off our student loans before we get a mortgage? A Don’t sweat student loans, says von Tobel. “Not all debt is created equal,” she explains. “Student loan debt is considered ‘good’ debt because it’s meant to help increase your earning power and have low interest rates.” Credit card debt and car loans, on the other hand, have high interest rates and are considered bad debt. Make it a priority to pay those off fast.

Q Do we really need a financial planner? A “When someone is helping you make progress and holding you accountable, it’s like having a personal trainer for your money,” says von Tobel, whose company LearnVest offers access to certified financial planners. But whether you use an in-person pro, a digital tool (like LearnVest or or DIY, the only thing that matters is that you keep track of your expenses and continue to budget and plan for the future.

For a totally romantic style, try an updo with layered braids and delicate loose strands (as seen at Claire Pettibone), or our favorite: a sideswept fishtail braid. For an extraglamorous look, weave in flowers, pearls or embellished clips.

Lip gloss gets a bad rap for being too sticky or messy, but it actually gives lips a pretty shine that goes perfectly with natural makeup. The trick is to prep your lips. Use a sugar scrub to remove dead skin, then apply your favorite lipstick and a thin layer of gloss for extra dimension. Skip toosparkly ones to avoid a juvenile look.

inbal dror Israeli designer Inbal Dror isn’t exactly new on the bridal scene (her collection launched in 2011). But after arriving stateside in 2013, she’s become one of the most sought-after designers, thanks to her daring gowns with one-of-a-kind details.

LAKUM Sathya Balakumar and Heather Green of Lakum, based in Brooklyn, New York, go a step beyond the traditional wedding dress with a chic “suite of looks” for the whole wedding weekend, from the rehearsal dinner to the morning-after brunch.

Kelly Faetanini If you want a twist on the classic bridal gown, Kelly Faetanini’s line is elegant but edgy. Faetanini uses unexpected color and textures (like silver leather) and customizable embellishments for a look that feels totally unique.

Houghton Inspired by modern style icons like Carrie Bradshaw, Katharine Polk of Houghton mixes minimalism and high-quality fabrics. Consistently cool, she was one of the first bridal designers to debut separates (think: tulle skirts and sweaters).

What’s New here’s what a king protea looks like

K 173

the new “it” flower Move over succulents, there’s a new bloom in town. King protea, with its large flowering head, is finding its way into bouquets and centerpieces alike (thanks in part to its long vase life). “Pair with other strong desert elements, since king protea is native to warm climates,” says Sarah Brysk Cohen of Blossom and Branch, who designed this centerpiece. And a word to the wise: “They’re very heavy to carry, so you’ll only want three or so in your bouquet— or your arms will be sore on your honeymoon.” >>

A Chick Flick He’ll Like K

Everyone needs a time-out from wedding planning—make yours a date night at the movies. The Wedding Ringer (in theaters January 16th) stars Josh Gad, a lovable groom-to-be without a wedding party. Before he marries dream girl Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting, he hires Kevin Hart, owner of The Best Man Inc., to provide him with a few good men. You can guess where this is going, right? Hilarious charades and an unexpected bromance make this a perfect (romantic) comedy for to-be-weds.

Desiree and Ch ris’s über-romantic engagement shoot

Desiree Hartsock of The Bachelorette is marrying contestant Chris Siegfried. Here are the details you haven’t heard about their wedding planning.

from bachelorette to bridal designer

Even though I work in the bridal business, I needed help. Being in the industry actually made planning more difficult—you know too much. Our planner, Steven Moore of Sinclair & Moore Events, has helped me get started by sharing his knowledge of flowers and what will work best for my vision.

…but narrowing it down wasn’t the hardest part. clockwise from left: Kurt Wilberding; @weddingpr; giving tree; @deshartsock; kate mathis

It was choosing a date that worked for our bridal party, schedules and the venue.

I’m taking notes from two Kates— Moss and Middleton. I was inspired by Kate Moss’s wedding, with its ethereal look, and Kate Middleton’s classic, timeless and iconic one.

Desiree with her girls at her bachelorette

I’m all about vintage style. My wedding is an extension of my personality. I’m always inspired by nature and vintage details. I like to keep things free-spirited with an effortless elegance.

We divided responsibilities. Chris is more realistic and logical, while I’m a dreamer. I’m good with the designing, and he’s better at budgeting.

Our guest list is surprisingly small… We plan on having 150 people. It was definitely more difficult for Chris to narrow down the guest list because he has so many friends from his [minor-league] baseball days. We didn’t want to invite anyone we hadn’t talked to in two years. Plus, having less people helps with budgeting!

We’re skipping some traditions. We won’t do the garter toss or a choreographed dance to “Y.M.C.A.”—ha!

uniquely feminine   “My biggest fear was that I wouldn’t find a dress that was different enough from the ones my friends wore,” says Amanda, a public relations manager from New York City. Even though she’d always envisioned herself in a mermaid silhouette, she knew she’d found her match the moment she saw her frothy Monique Lhuillier ball gown. “It just stood out,” she says. “The sexy corset bodice against the feather-organza skirt was like nothing I had ever seen.”

You might not recognize the name Catbird, but you’ve probably seen the knuckle ring trend the 10 -year-old brand invented. Now, Catbird is getting noticed for its seriously stunning wedding bands and engagement rings. We recently sat down to chat with founder Rony Vardi.

We love your engagement rings and bands— they’re so unique. And congratulations on opening a second shop and the new wedding annex! What made you focus on bridal jewelry? That part of the business grew organically as the creative, artsy neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, that we’re in grew up around us. The same people who were already shopping with us were now getting married, and they wanted rings that were nontraditional. So in 2008, we started carrying wedding rings, and then last year we launched our own engagement ring line. CLOCKWISE FROM UPPER LEFT Bands, from

Ring sizing can be kind of confusing. What’s one great tip all couples can use? If a ring is set with diamonds inside the band, get it a little bigger because it can never be resized—but you can always put in a sizing ball. Over time your fingers may get bigger, whether you get pregnant, move to a warmer climate or just eat a lot of potato chips.

$3,400 each, Polly Wales; Kira ring, $1,150, Digby + Iona; Fairy Light eternity band, $1,300, Catbird; wedding bands, from $270 each, Catbird; Swan Queen ring, from $5,800, Catbird. All available at

What’s your best ring selfie tip? What’s a new piece in your engagement line that you can’t help but swoon over? The Swan Queen, a limited edition piece. It’s a salt-and-pepper pavé band of pink diamonds flanking either side of a center ice one. My buyer Leigh Plessner and I handpicked the stones. It’s something we could only do as we added expert jewelers to our studio, and we now have 17. Wash your hands with cold water first. Then put lotion on and let it sink in. Shake your hands out because the tendency is to stiffen your hand. Make sure your pinky is tucked close to your ring finger, so you’re not doing that weird Star Trek thing. Keep your wrist in the shot—that elongates the perspective. Or just take a photo of the ring in the box, propped at a nice angle. And early afternoon sunshine is the best light. Finally, take 5,000 photos and post the one good one on Instagram!

Does size—of the diamond, of course—really matter? We’re seeing more people doing what’s right for them and not being concerned about what their neighbor or coworker might think about the size of the stone. Do what you want! Pick the perfect jewelry and gorgeous accessories for your wedding at

We’re not the only ones meowing about these jewels— these stylish stars love them too.

having a designer pattern “Generally, the more expensive the dress, the more time is spent on making it,” says designer Amsale Aberra. An expertly crafted pattern— including time-consuming steps like hand-tucking and pleating—is the key to a unique look and a flattering fit that flows beautifully on a variety of body shapes. After the pattern has been created by a designer, it’s fitted in a showroom on a model (to make sure every seam is completely perfect), shown on the runway, and then finally goes into production.

using pricey materials All fabrics are not created equal, and the cost will vary depending on quality. More expensive chiffon, like the one this dress is made of, is crafted from silk. It’s sheer and flows easily as you move. Polyester chiffon, a budgetfriendly option, tends to be a bit more opaque and stiffer. The same goes for tulle and lace—some variations will be pricier depending on quality and construction.

being made to order Some dresses for taller or plus-size ladies are custommade and, as a result, cost extra. But even standard sizes aren’t mass-produced. They’re sewn when ordered— and all are cut from the same dye lot (meaning the fabric for each is dyed together for an identical hue).

the big question

wed without one Yes, a wedding is pretty much the only time you could wear a veil, but that shouldn’t be the only reason you do it. “If you have a really special accessory, you may not want it hidden under a veil,” Sabatino says. And if you’re totally low maintenance and want to minimize every single potential source of stress throughout the wedding planning process, you’ll probably be relieved that you don’t have to find a veil to match your dress or add one more item to your budget. “Plus, you won’t need a hairstylist to help you take out the veil to avoid ruining your updo, or rely on a bridesmaid to do it properly,” Sabatino says. Bottom line: If a veil doesn’t feel right, skip it. Trust us—all of your guests will still be perfectly aware of who the bride is, even if you aren’t wearing a veil.

veil K

wear the traditional topper This is the one chance you’ll get to follow this time-honored tradition and look like a bride. “Veils are just so beautiful in photos and definitely add an element of drama to your bridal look,” says stylist Julie Sabatino, owner of The Stylish Bride in New York City. If you’re wearing a blusher, your father (or whoever is giving you away) may be looking forward to lifting the veil (and your mother may also be anticipating that same moment from the front row). “I’ve had a few brides I’ve worked with wear their mother’s veil, and they say they didn’t really care about the veil that much—but their mom did,” Sabatino says. Worried about feeling restricted while dancing at your reception? There’s an easy fix: Just wear the veil for the ceremony and the formal photos, then take it off before you head into the party.

Choose Your Color For the most part, black false lashes are the way to go. But if you have really light lashes (barely there blonde or red), stick with brown; they’ll look more natural.

2   3   K

Measure Your Length Use a pair of tweezers to hold the false lash strip along your eyelid and trim from the outer corner with tiny scissors. This creates lashes sized exactly to your eyes. Dab on Glue Run the lash glue along the edge of the false lashes and let it dry for 30 seconds. You want the consistency to be a little tacky.

Apply Lashes Press the seam of the false lashes into your natural lash line. That way, when the strip adheres to your skin, the lashes are pointing upward—opening up your eyes. Use a cotton swab to adjust and hold the lashes in place. With your finger, gently mesh your false lashes in with your natural ones. Curl While the glue is drying, curl both your real and fake lashes together. This will create a more natural look, since it brings both of them into the same curve. add mascara After your lashes are dry, apply two coats of mascara, mostly at the roots, leaving the ends bare for a realistic look. Fill in any gaps with liquid eyeliner.

l  ash out

There was a time when false lashes were downright scary, but with more natural-looking options and a few genius application tricks from our celeb makeup artist friend Anthea King, they’re now totally wearable and gorgeous.

I need a cover-up for an outdoor wedding. I’m not crazy about boleros and am looking for something more unique than a pashmina. Any ideas?

There’s a huge trend of wearing traditional sportswear, like a leather jacket or an embellished cardigan, with wedding gowns, says wedding stylist Annie Cavallo of WellStyled Events, who just happened to style our cover. Look at brands like J.Crew, Kate Spade New York and Ann Taylor; they generally have a little sparkle in their lines. As far as color goes, you can match

your dress or pick a hue that ties into your wedding party. That way, if you want to drape it over your shoulders for some photos, you’ll complement your bridal party or stand out with your own pop of color. Maybe your jacket is even your “something blue!” The best time to shop for a cover-up is around the end of summer or winter, when transitional pieces for fall and spring collections hit stores.

e have the W answers to your fashion dilemmas.

I’m getting married in three months, but I just found my dress. (I know—I’m like six months behind.) It’s a beautiful lace column dress, and now I’m stumped on hair accessories. I’m not opposed to wearing a veil. Any ideas? You have three options. A chapel-length veil that’s edged with the same lace as your dress would give a perfectly elegant outline and wouldn’t detract from your gown, according to Maradee Wahl of Dear Maradee. (She should know too—she styled Carolina Herrera gowns for almost eight years.) The two other choices: a sheer cut-edge (no trim) veil that hangs straight down your back, or a birdcage veil if you’re into the vintage look.

My wedding dress is short and flowy and I want to wear heels, but I’m a little taller than my fiancé. What should I do? This is a really common question. Consider a kitten heel or a sweet ballet flat, Cavallo says. Your dress sounds “casually elegant,” so your options are pretty endless. If you go with a heel, look for a two-inch one; it will still elongate your silhouette, but you won’t tower over your partner. 1 $375, Benjamin Adams, 2 $250, Something Bleu, 3 $307,

Now, all that remains of the original structure are the thick, vine-covered stone walls, creating an open-air sanctuary in the middle of the rain forest (facility rental from $3,500, >>

The Blue Dress Barn, Benton Harbor, Michigan Nothing says “country elegance” quite like a weathered old barn. At The Blue Dress Barn, you could say your vows in the gardens, then move the party under the open timber roof of the 4,600-square-foot dairy barn—one of the largest standing in Michigan. In fact, many argue that this is the venue that launched the barn wedding craze. A glimmering 48-foot chapel made of 425 windows is probably the last thing anyone would expect to find nestled beneath a canopy of trees in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. And that’s exactly why we love it. Thanks to 6,000 square feet of glass, this one-of-a-kind ceremony space completely blurs the line between outdoors and in for a result that’s truly spiritual. kourtney & connor • Odda, Norway photograph by Logan Jones

While visiting his brother in Norway, the couple made the freezing four-hour hike to Trolltunga—a rock that’s over 2,000 feet above a valley. After waiting in line for a photo at the tip, Connor took Kourtney’s shaking hand and they walked out together. She was smiling at the camera until he tugged her hand and she realized he was on one knee. “We were standing in one of the most beautiful places in the world and the man of my dreams asked me to marry him,” says Kourtney. “Life couldn’t get any better.” >>

kristin & justin Larimer Square, Denver photograph by BRiAN KRAFT photography

It all happened when Justin tricked Kristin into thinking they were going to watch a new episode of New Girl—she had been complaining about missing it all week. But Justin actually snuck in a video he made himself. It started as the New Girl intro but transitioned into a montage of romantic clips from movies and TV shows. It ended with him on a knee, asking her to marry him. She said, “yes,” of course, and asked shortly after whether or not there was a new episode!

Jason spent weeks telling Julie he wasn’t able to visit her family on Thanksgiving, and she was pretty bummed. During a long walk in the woods a few days before the holiday, Jason stopped in the middle of a bridge and told Julie that he was indeed coming—so they both could tell her family in person they were getting married. “I was so surprised that I fell on the ground and rolled around a bit,” says Julie. “And Jason was so nervous he accidentally jammed the engagement ring on the wrong finger!” >>

Brad proposed to Rachel in the bathroom, upholding a long family tradition. After saying he wasn’t feeling well (so she wouldn’t suspect anything), Brad called for Rachel to bring the plunger. “He pulled me in, started reading a poem written inside of a photo book he made and proposed,” Rachel says. “After staring into the sparkle of the ring, he told me there was another surprise and opened the door to reveal our families who had flown in to celebrate!”

erica & steven Pittsburgh photograph by mecca gamble photography

Minutes after Steven asked Erica’s father for her hand in marriage, she got a text from him congratulating her—he didn’t know it was a secret! To ensure Erica was surprised on the actual day—and that she was thoroughly primped—Steven took her for a photo shoot on her birthday followed by a surprise party. “I consider myself a stylish guy, so I wore a fitted suit, but my pants were so tight, I couldn’t get the ring out of my pocket once I got on bended knee—I had to get down on both knees!” Steven says. >>

amy & taylor Springfield, MO photograph by regina richards photography

On the way back from visiting their families on Christmas night, Taylor confessed he was having trouble finding the perfect vintage engagement ring. When they got home, he told her to wait in the car while he ran upstairs to their apartment. When she got inside, he was on one knee surrounded by sticky notes (an inside joke) in the shape of a heart on the floor. Each little note included a handwritten message telling her how much he loved her. The next day, they went shopping together to pick out a ring.

After one date, “a total stranger asked how long we had been dating because we looked so happy together,” Brittney recalls. Four years later, their set-in-the-stars tale continued with a ballroom wedding at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles, where they live. The bride wore a long, white skirt with an added twist: The bodice was an edgy-yet-elegant black corset. The ensemble set the modern, monochromatic look for the event. fter meeting in New York City while waiting to get into a nightclub, Randy Florke (52 and an interior designer and real estate developer) and Sean Patrick Maloney (48 and a US Congressman) spent 22 years building their relationship and family—including two daughters and a son—before finally marrying in front of 250 of their closest friends and family. “We tried to keep everything as timeless and classic as possible, so everyone in the wedding party wore black and white,” Randy says. The reception had an elegant country flair, in keeping with its location at the couple’s upstate New York home. The relaxed atmosphere started with the flowers: “I wanted whatever was in bloom that day in the Hudson Valley—peonies to poppies,” Randy says. And they served laidback comfort food classics, like grilled cheese and short-rib sliders (yum!). —ALE

n an ordinary day, Rebecca D’Amato (33 and an event planner at Tate and an independent wedding planner) and Frans Kobus (37 and operations director at Benugo) love to entertain—so when it came to their nuptials, naturally they went all out. Not to mention, she does this for a living! With a guest list that extended from Shanghai to Seattle, the London-based lovebirds (who met working in Washington, DC, nine years earlier) decided on Great Britain for their wedding weekend. Drawing on Rebecca’s event experience, they planned nearly the entire thing themselves. The wedding party’s elegant attire was totally in tune with their historic venue and the sparkly details were echoed in the pink, black, white and gold décor. They also incorporated English touches, like a custom crest and Downton Abbey–esque bridesmaid gowns. The result was a pretty bash with just the right amount of glam. —MO

The color palette:

the bridal party style Rebecca wore an ivory strapless ball gown with a lace and organza ruched bodice, full tulle skirt and detachable beaded sash. Her bridesmaids provided the perfect contrast in sleek sequined sheaths. “I gave them a couple of sparkly options and let them pick their favorite,” she says. “I wanted their dresses to reflect the theme we were going for—sophisticated and fun.” the details At the reception, Rebecca and Frans’s chairs were accented with lush garden roses and peonies in shades of pink. the child attendants Frans’s niece and nephew were dressed in mini-versions of the wedding party attire for their flower girl and ring bearer duties.

And share it they did! Guests took the threemile gondola ride to the top of snowcovered Aspen Mountain for Josie and Kow’s high-altitude, high-fashion nuptials. To accentuate the majesty of their mountain setting, the couple decided on a sleek black, white and silver color palette. eddings are ridiculously romantic, so it’s not surprising Maris Emanuel (28 and sales director for Hooklogic) and Andrew Kastanos (30 and director of finance for StreetLights Residential) fell for each other—pretty darn hard—when they were both in a wedding of friends. “I was immediately drawn to Andrew’s personality. He made me laugh, smile and I didn’t want to leave his side,” Maris says. After dating long-distance for a while, she moved to Dallas (where they now reside), and three years after helping their friends get married, it was their turn to walk down the aisle. At the traditional Charleston, South Carolina, plantation, fashion-forward details—from Maris’s unique embellished dress to the Moroccan-style lanterns and bold graphic cake—gave their day a modern and personal twist. The color palette was even pulled from one of Maris’s favorite dresses! —ALE

trumpet gown The skirt in this style flares out just below the hips, creating a semi-full skirt (shaped like the bell of a trumpet) without extra volume and bulk.

mermaid gown This gown is a bit more fitted and flares out at the knee (or lower). It’s a great silhouette for showing off curves.

a-line gown This universally flattering style hugs the torso and has a flared skirt in, you guessed it, an A-shape.

ball gown The ball gown has a fitted bodice and a dramatic full skirt. Busty brides will love this shape because it creates balanced proportions.

wedding party 101 The least you need to know to coordinate your wedding party’s look.

bridesmaids • For a modern, but still put-together look—pick the color and fabric, but consider letting your bridesmaids choose the neckline and silhouette. • When shopping, bring one or two bridesmaids—maybe the maid who has the body or coloring that’s most similar to the rest of the bridal party, or the maid who is the most difficult to fit. • Ask for your maids’ advice, but make the final decision yourself. You’re the one who knows the big picture—overall look, formality and people’s budgets—best. • The bridesmaids should try to place their orders at the same time to ensure that the dresses will be made from the same dye lot. • Allow three months’ delivery and alteration time for the dresses. • Don’t forget the extras. Should the maids all have the same shoes, jewelry, hairstyles, handbags or wraps? Communicate your desires clearly to your maids. Email works great for this.

scoop neckline

one-shoulder neckline

groom & groomsmen • Brush up on your tuxedo terms and take a peek in your own closet before you begin suit shopping. This will give you an idea of what style you like best—notched or shawl lapel, standard or spread collar. • The groomsmen should dress around the groom. A consistent look is great, but the groom should sport some detail (a boutonniere, tie or pocket square) that differentiates him from the pack. shawl lapel notched lapel

• The tuxedo is classic, but consider all your options. Marrying by the beach? Try a more casual jacket and trousers. Having an ultra-formal wedding? Pick a cutaway coat, gray-striped trousers, gray vest and ascot. peaked lapel

flower girls & ring bearers • Flower girls and ring bearers don’t have to match the adults perfectly, but they should certainly fit in with the formality of the event. The only exception: Tuxedos aren’t necessary (and may not be available) for tykes under six. Our trick—substitute a black suit and a bow tie. • Be sure to dress your flower girl or ring bearer appropriately for their age. Strapless or halter dresses may be too sophisticated for the little ones (even with a cardigan), while overly froufrou tulle dresses might not look right on, say, a 10-year-old.

• Should you rent or buy? If you don’t attend many formal events or if your weight is frequently in flux, renting may be the way to go. If you’ll have three or four more good uses for a tux, the suit will pay for itself.

Shangri-La Paris Starting at $25,519 for the night, this suite is a super-splurge—but we just had to show it to you. Amour already seeps out of Paris’s pores, and the elegant 1,175-square-foot one-bedroom Suite Chaillot room—situated in the former mansion of Napoleon Bonaparte’s great-nephew—takes romance to scandalous heights with in-your-face views of the city’s iconic symbol of love, the Eiffel Tower. Next, they hopped on a train to Valencia for three nights at the Hospes Palau de la Mar Hotel. Then, they spent four nights exploring Madrid and three nights at Seville’s Gran Melia Colon, taking advantage of its rooftop hot tub. Lastly, they flew to Lisbon, Portugal, enjoying three nights at Hotel Vincci Baixa, located in the city’s center with tons of shops and restaurants. while you’re there... Eat at Az-Zait in Seville, a tiny restaurant tucked away near Plaza de San Lorenzo. “It’s probably one of the best meals we’ve ever had,” says Bill. “We had an eight-course chef’s tasting menu that elevated Spanish cuisine to a level we didn’t know was possible!” Before you leave Madrid, go see Picasso’s Guernica at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía—it’s one of those masterpieces that’s truly magical in person. follow their advice...   want their honeymoon? where to stay... Erin and Andrew spent six nights at Amangiri, a luxury resort in remote Canyon Point, Utah. “Amangiri is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been,” says Erin. “It’s hard to say what I loved most but I think it’s the location—it’s in the middle of the open desert in a valley surrounded by stunning canyons with vibrant colors.” while you’re there... No day at Amangiri was the same—one day the couple conquered the rocky terrain of the Via Ferrata trails and the next they kicked back at the resort’s spa, where they signed up for a sensory deprivation treatment that involved floating in salt water heated to body temperature followed by a massage. Cool, right? One of Erin and Andrew’s favorite excursions was paddleboarding in Lake Powell, an oasis between slot canyons. At Zion National Park, which they say was well worth the hour drive, the scenic “Angels Landing” hike did not disappoint. The couple says to bring clip-ins (its steep slope is no joke!). follow their advice... “Don’t forget to pack your sunscreen,” warns Erin. “The desert is a hot, hot place.” >>

Nicolette and James adored their Large Suite Charme room, with its romantic canopy bed, oversize tub and Moroccan furnishings. “It even smelled amazing!” says Nicolette, our deputy art director. But their favorite times at the resort were spent reading by the pool on cushioned lounge chairs and eating home-cooked tagine. while you’re there... Taking advantage of the resort’s cab service to Marrakech, they ventured into the vibrant city, exploring the manicured gardens of Jardin Majorelle and shopping at the souks—the city’s famous labyrinth of exotic shops.
