T

he 42nd Collegiate and the 30th Graduate School Commencement Exercises for the Batch of 2024 were held in the Fra Angelico Gymnasium on the evening of July 5, with the theme “One Arriba Spirit: Empowered to Rise Through Character, Competence, and Faith-Fueled Education.”

The commencement exercises began with the procession of the 347 college students, 20 graduate school students, faculty, and administrators led by Mr. John Bernard A. Montesines, the master of ceremonies. Ms. Eloisa Alvarez Genota, Head of Registrar, and Rector and President, Rev. Fr. Napoleon M. Encarnacion, O.P., headed the ceremony proper

with the petition for graduation and conferment of degrees.

For this year’s Address of Gratitude, School of Education, Arts, and Sciences (SEAS) BS Psychology graduate Mr. James Gabriel De Mesa, recipient of the Academic Distinction award, delivered his message to the graduating class and administrators.

Mr. Jan Whils Macatangay, School of Nursing graduate and Leadership Award recipient, led the Dominican Youth Code, while Mr. Derrick Ryan Tolop, School of Engineering and Architecture (SEA) BS Electrical Engineering

graduate, led the Oath of Loyalty.

To conclude, the Dominican priests blessed the graduates which was preceded by a heartfelt same-day edit video presentation of the ceremony and the singing of the batch graduation song—a rendition of Rivermaya’s Liwanag sa Dilim, led by BS Psychology graduates Ms. Catherine Martinez and Mr. John Raphael Elemos.

The event ended as the graduates gathered in front of the Fra Angelico Hall to witness the skies light up with the pyrotechnic show.

Letran Street Dance Crew (LSDC) elevated the mood as they set the stage on fire with their dance moves. Afterwards, the schools showcased their video presentations and expressed their excitement for the academic

year through their chants. It was then followed by the introduction of the faculty members of each collegiate school by the Academic Heads.

Students were also serenaded by the Letran Musicians Circle (LMC), and Buhawi Band from the BS Civil Engineering. Raffles and games also fueled the fun during the event. To conclude, Rev. Fr. Rambang Ngawan O.P., Operations and Coordinator of Religious Education, Mission and Identity (REMI), also shared his message to the students.

espite the inclement weather, Letranites warmly welcomed the arrival of the pilgrim image of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary La Naval de Manila last September 4.

The image was carried in a motorcade from RSM Real Highway to Jollibee Bucal, followed by a solemn procession led by the Campus Ministry Department enroute to the Colegio. Students, teachers, and employees greeted the Virgin with excitement as they chanted “Viva La Virgen de La Naval!” while waving their white handkerchiefs at the Fra Angelico Gymnasium.

After the liturgical celebration, the medals and diplomas of the graduates were blessed in the presence of the deans of each collegiate school together with Dr. Floricon Encabo, the Vice President for Academics and Research.

Dr. Norma Villamor, Basic Education Principal, hosted the short TikTok presentations of the graduating students with faculty members and administrators after the photo opportunities.

To conclude the rites, the Colegio facade lit blue and red in honor of Sinaghayo—a solemn farewell rite where the graduates shared candlelit flames with one another from the torch in front of the Delas Casas Building as well as a ceremonial singing of the Letran Hymn.

he Student Services Department (SSD), together with student leaders and volunteers from various Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs), successfully held the two-day 2024 Pandayan Camp last August 12-13.

The camp, with the theme "Letranite Leaders Adapting and Thriving: Leading Through Change,” kicked off its first day with a series of seminars at the Saint Joseph Hall. On the second day, attendees went to Montvida Garden and Events Place and participated in team-building activities facilitated by Mr. Michael Jade Wania, and on a discussion on building high-performing teams by External Relations Assistant Director Mr. Rodel Lawas. SSD Director Ms. Ann Reshier Bayugo concluded the camp with a recap of the activities held during the two-day camp.

After the main program and the awarding of winning teams, the student leaders enjoyed recreational activities together for the remainder of the camp.

The Pandayan Camp is an annual leadership training camp designed to equip new students with skills they need for the upcoming academic year. This year marks the 26th Pandayan Camp organized by the SSD, and the first to be held outside the Colegio since the pandemic.

Letranites Bag Multiple Awards in NOCEI Research Forum | by Pia Angela Tabaldo

elected alumni, faculty, and students gathered as representatives of the Colegio at the 16th Network Of CALABARZON Educational Institutions (NOCEI) Research Forum, in the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies in Silang, Cavite, last June 29.

The event was headed by the Research Committee of NOCEI; Dr. Ma. Xenia Z. Bitera, Senior Director of the Research Department of the Colegio, served as the Secretary of the Research Committee while several notable individuals from the Colegio’s Research Department also served as the working committee during the event.

he 10th Give A Bag For Life, an annual blood donation drive, was held last August 4 at the St. Joseph Hall.

It was initiated by Dr. Arlene Dominguita, a Letran Volunteer Corps alumna, in coordination with the Philippine Red Cross Laguna Chapter Calamba Branch and in partnership with the Community Extension Services Department (CESD) and the Letran Volunteer Corps (LVC).

Despite the heavy rain showers throughout the day, a total of 109 bags were collected from the drive which exceeded the 100 blood bag goal.

Rice bags and other grocery packs were given as tokens to the donors sponsored by local politicians — Cong.

Ruth Hernandez, Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez, Cong. Cha Hernandez, and Calamba Mayor Ross Rizal in support of the drive.

School of Education, Arts, and Sciences (SEAS), co-hosted the event, while Dr. Richard John Brian D. Manzano, Dean of SEAS, moderated a parallel session.

hese past years have taken a toll on the student organizations in Letran Calamba. Several of them have been dissolved and left awaiting for a chance of revival, due to the lack of pillars to serve the studentry.

This year, for the second time in a row, the highest governing collegiate body is nowhere to be found.

The last time anyone has seen the Letran Calamba Student Government (LCSG) was in academic year 20222023, during the term of Ms. Reven Lazaro–the former and last recorded LCSG President. Although there were efforts to sustain the student government, the 2023 student elections ended in controversy.

Personal issues and grievances among students and the candidates were aired out on social media, particularly in the infamous Letran Freedom Wall. This uproar became a hot topic for weeks before it subsided after the elections ended. The Letran Commission on Elections (LECOMELEC) then announced a failure of elections, and the Alliance of Recognized Student Organizations (ARSO) was assigned to handle studentrelated projects as per the Student Elections Code.

For this academic year, not one person ran for the highest student government.

Student councils faced similar situations, with only a few candidates stepping Illustration by: up for their councils–one of Francis Angela Caña which is the lone candidate from the School of Business, Management, and Accountancy (SBMA), while other councils had no candidates at all. Councils were then left to appoint members to fill their rosters, often chosen by their council advisers or their departmental deans. For the second year in a row, the Alliance of Recognized Student Organizations (ARSO) took LCSG’s place in manning the reins, acting as an emergency measure to counteract the failure to elect student government officials.

While almost having the same job description as LCSG, ARSO acts as the central coordinating body for both Academic and Non-Academic Organizations, a liaison between the LCSG and other student organizations. They are not a replacement, rather another channel of communication among recognized student organizations (RSOs) to better serve the student body of

the Colegio. The failure of elections in 2023 necessitated ARSO to step up to fill the roles, however, this year’s situation could have been avoided–why are we faced with an even greater issue? Why are there no candidates stepping forward to run for the LCSG? One cannot help but wonder if the controversy two years ago had an influence on the dwindling number of student leaders. Many may have been shaken after witnessing such controversy, or might have been overwhelmed by the pressure of being placed in that situation as well–who would want to face an embarrassing and humiliating trial in public after all?

Or is it because the students of the Colegio lack the drive and determination to lead and serve after years of being disillusioned with the electoral processes? Are the student leaders lacking support and encouragement? One thing is for sure, there is a noticeable decline in student involvement, especially in taking on leadership roles, which is concerning if this becomes the trend for the next few years.

Appointments or replacements may be a practical solution to the lack of candidates or none thereof, but it undermines the principle of elections and other proper channels we used to honor–why do we hold elections in the first place if no candidates are willing to actually run for it? The absence of individuals catered to for one position alone forces other students or already elected council officials to rise to the occasion. If students do not feel that running for a position matters, or that their voice as a leader holds no actual meaning, how can we ensure that those appointed can handle the greater challenges that may come for their positions, or that we are going to receive the best possible support from them this academic year?

Wall may have contributed to the failure of the election that year, but even with candidates facing boycotts, the final vote count fell short of the required number of votes, leading to the official declaration of a failed election. Students and student leaders share the responsibility for these consecutive failures. When students neglect to voice their grievances through proper channels and fail to engage in the voting process, they undermine the very system that is meant to represent them.

Consequently, student leaders must reflect on their reluctance to run for position, especially as students’ interest in leadership positions continues to decrease each year.

Another possible factor that may have contributed to the failed 2023 student elections is the shift of voting modality. The 2022 student elections reached the required number of votes because it was held online through Google Forms unlike the elections in 2023 that was held in-campus using the computer laboratories in the St. Thomas Aquinas building. Many students did not get to cast their votes as the voting schedule coincided with their classes.

Students need to recognize that their voice matters and active

echnological advancements made throughout history possess a portion of man’s capabilities—if not already surpassing them at times. The will of these machines act upon their sole purpose: to assist mankind in their woes and make their lives easier and more comfortable while taking the blunt of their hardships.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been in our existence even before it skyrocketed popularity to the masses. These man-made machinations have been used as tools to solve many issues that left professionals stumped for decades—medicine and machine learning have been working hand in hand, building skills as they are being taught to produce results that society and the vulnerable can benefit from.

Advanced early detection of cancer cells through imaging with the assistance of AI have been reported in India, letting us take a step closer to living without fear of its affliction.

The only way AI can produce results is through machine learning. It is fed information and other works of man to mimic a portion of our greatness as they do not have the capability to think for themselves and act upon their inspirations like we do. At the end of the day, they are nothing but code and metal created to serve as tools for their creators—their gods—man.

That is how AI should end—as mere tools for the benefit of all and not for personal gain, to support and not to replace. Unfortunately, it is inevitable for greed to corrupt the minds of some due to our free will. In a way, we are our machine’s own gods; beings without free will forced to do evil bidding of some at the cost of their victim’s safety, dignity, income, even to the point of their whole lives. The recent emergence of commercial AI has left the patrons of the arts and academics fighting for their survival. What is worse is that it became a weapon against women and children alike.

Every Paw Deserves the Awe

participation is essential for representation. Likewise, student leaders should live up to their roles to demonstrate what a leader should be to inspire other students to serve. Additionally the Student Services Department (SSD) and LECOMELEC are also responsible and should be actively involved in ensuring that he voice of the students is heard and accounted for in student-related activities. The timeline for student elections should allow the students to participate fully and attentively; Student voters should be required to attend and actively listen to the annual Miting de Avance in order to know the candidates’ plans and stances as well as to avoid guessing and voting based on appearances and the personal relationships.

Student leaders should also be guided properly all throughout and are trained with actual skills and knowledge that matter. After all, student elections are a major event in Colegio that will decide the upcoming academic year for the entire student body. The decline in student involvement creates a cycle that can become a bigger problem in the future, and it is imperative that we actively work together to break it before we truly regret it.

All of these issues have one thing in common–consciousness and ability.

The rise of students breaking academic integrity in order to pass “quality outputs” and relish in the false glory of it has been an ongoing topic among institutions.

After all, you spend a good portion of your life educating them only for a machine in the guise of a child to deceive you. Here’s my output, I did not even bother to try.

A modern retelling of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Countless machines available to produce in a matter of seconds has left students complacent and lazy. Art theft, on the other hand, has also been an ongoing issue in the community. Art is still considered a useless occupation where only a handful, privileged few can afford to do. The emergence of commercially available art stealing machines have not only hurt the art scene, it also left them put up so many defensive walls to survive.

It does not and will never end here. If women and young girls all throughout the world have to be wary of their safety on the streets and their own homes, they also have to be wary on the internet as well. Deepfakes are a cruel invention that takes the identity of a person just by a singular photo, and what can be created is a staggering amount of false information and media outputs that can drive a person to their edge. Feminist movements have been trying hard to protect women from sexual harassment in person, only for degenerates to ruin every ounce of progress online for a moment of pleasure–which is a lifetime of torment for a victim. This shows that women and young girls are not and will ever be safe in their own skin just because they are born with different chromosomes for lust and greed will always follow them even up to their graves.

They say that hard work always pays off. Some might even argue that teaching a machine how to mimic every detail of a person’s existence takes a lot of effort and sacrifice for desires such as these are readily available. Is the goal of ease and comfort not worth the road worth enduring? Are these ruthless, fleeting moments of joy worth the lives that have been ruined? Denying a person of free will is an unspeakable evil, but as long as free will exists, ridding the plane of existence of evil will be a difficult puzzle we will not be able to solve. themselves as pet-friendly, but how pet-friendly are they when an aspin is around?

Recently, a restaurant called in Tagaytay faced backlash when they barred an aspin from entering the establishment. The restaurant reasoned that it is because the aspin is too big to be let in which is ridiculous. Yoda, the aspin in question, does not even look big enough to be classified as a big dog. Aspins usually do not grow up to the sizes of golden retrievers or labradors which are considered as big dogs so it is clear that Yoda’s size as the reason is only made up by the restaurant to mask their discrimination against aspins.

espite being native, Asong Pinoy or Aspins, are discriminated against in the Philippines because of the stigma around them. They are formerly called “askal,” short for “asong kalye” or street dogs because they literally roam the streets. With their reputation, foreign dog breeds are preferred more than them, with aspins considered as the “lesser dogs.”

People commonly use dogs as a status symbol so rambling around with a street dog is not an option. This also reflects Filipinos’ colonial mentality with associating aspins, the local dogs, to the poor, and foreign dog breeds to the rich.

However, in recent years, aspins have begun to receive the love they deserve starting with people no longer using the term “askal” to refer to them. Gradually, they are being recognized as the loving and playful breed they are, though some remain resistant to this change. Many establishments are now also branding

The establishment also reasoned that it is “for the safety” of the other customers. It is unprofessional of them to assume that an aspin would be aggressive despite not showing any signs of aggression. Aspins are not a threat. The safety of their customers is not dependent on the breed of the dog.

The restaurant’s attempts to be discriminatory to a native dog is more than enough to discredit them of being a “pet-friendly” establishment which is an irony to their very Filipino restaurant name, which means “Big House” in Negrense, turning them into house that is not hospitable to a native. A true pet-friendly restaurant is one that does not discriminate based on the breed and does not make up policies on the spot just to deny a certain dog breed entrance.

The Great Illusion

F

ormer Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque’s recent attempt to paint the dispute between the Dutertes and the Marcoses backfired because of the response he received from the people he rallied, exposing the fragile nature of simplistic dichotomies in our society.

“Hindi na po ito laban ng Duterte at Marcos. Ang laban po ngayon ay pwersa ng kadiliman at pwersa ng…?” Roque asked to which his supporters responded with “Kasamaan (darkness)!” Roque then corrected them, saying the right answer was “kabutihan” (goodness), as it was a fight between good versus evil. This dichotomous thinking of “kadiliman” versus “kabutihan,” which many politicians and citizens still embrace today, is nothing new. Politicians scramble to enhance their images with such simplistic narratives to win support against potential competition or divert citizens’ attention from real and deeper complexities of our government–to get away.

The “good versus evil” narrative may resonate to most on a surface level, but it oversimplifies the realities of governance. Politics, as philosophers argue, is less about a moral battle and more about the struggle for resources and power.

When politicians frame their opponents as embodiments of evil, they exploit a narrative that confines us to thinking that everything is as black and white; if it is not them, then it must be me, positioning themselves as the good, righteous alternative, because in no fairytale do people choose evil above anything else.

aris, France. It’s the 3rd of August, 2024 at the Paris Olympics and Carlos Yulo brings home the Philippines its 2nd gold medal. The following day, he clinched another gold, giving our country its third and making him the first Filipino two-time Olympic gold medalist. Such a monumental achievement calls for a monumental remuneration and a proper celebration. Promptly, he was received warmly upon his return, however his huge win will soon be overshadowed in the media by his family’s issues with him.

Posts talking about his separation with his mother began circulating after his first gold, with most loaded with the implication that his success was fated revenge for his mother’s misdeed. But what was it? It was that his mother, Angelica Yulo, stole tens of thousands of pesos from him. Now this is a hot and spicy topic because such an issue was brought to the spotlight at the height of his success. Because of this, netizens began uncovering details about his mother’s treatment towards him, like that facebook comment of her refusing to address him and recognize him as part of the family. We were all curious. The family issue immediately gained traction and soon enough, we got a press conference.

Tearing from her eyes with sadness forming on her face, Angelica Yulo says that this is a private family matter and that it should be resolved within the safety of their home, she says as she’s speaking to a microphone, with a panel, in front of multiple cameras broadcasting nationwide. While we are uncertain of what the truth really is, if she really did steal it or that it was just a misunderstanding from them, what we are now certain is that people will twist our tradition of honoring the debt-of-gratitude to further their own gain and push toxic family relations.

With the negative reactions mainly criticizing Carlos for picking his girlfriend’s side rather than his mom’s, calling him ungrateful and that the fame has gotten to his head, this has become a clear example of the twisting of debt-ofgratitude. Intentional or not, the criticisms omit the key detail that despite being said that Carlos had a good upbringing and was brought up with solid foundations,

the “kadiliman” and “kasamaan” forces that parade themselves as the good forces.

There is no fight between good versus evil–if anything, we are witnessing two evil forces fighting and masquerading as well-meaning for their own self-interests.

The goodness that Roque refers to should only pertain to the masses that fall victim to them all the time. When leaders who prioritize self-interest over genuine public service are repeatedly elected, the masses who become victims of a system that offers an illusion of choice in these cycles of power and corruption can never win. Roque knows this very well, given his ‘good’ reputation before his apparent shift to self-interest. Now masquerading as a force for good, he embodies the very complexities and contradictions that characterize our political landscape: there is no clear good versus evil, especially when self-interest is at play.

If a political figure can define who the villains and heroes are based solely on their personal agenda, the moral clarity we seek from them becomes an illusion.

It is not about them being the righteous defenders against the evil that plagues the country; instead, they themselves are the evil forces this country must overcome.

As a nation deeply rooted in religious values, the Philippines needs to adopt a more nuanced approach to political discourse. It is bad enough that our voters find themselves with no real choice, but risking the continuation of such system that thrives on division and manipulation means nothing but an eventual doom for our society. With time still remaining before the next general and national elections, it is crucial for us to look beyond the surface of these familiar faces. By recognizing the present illusion of choice, and helping others be enlightened from these illusions, we empower our society to move past simplistic narratives and advocate for genuine leaders who aim to strengthen democracy and address the real issues facing our society. he still distanced himself because of it, meaning that she broke his trust so much so that he had to distance himself from her and their family. When it comes to this, should he still honor his blood ties when he’s done this dirty? Should he still keep close family bonds when his dad called him a waste of his semen? Should he still keep in touch with them when his siblings said that one day, they’ll surpass him and that they don’t need him? In spite of the glory he’s brought to them, eventually they hated him so why try.

Trying to fish your olympic champion son back by vilifying and insulting him is certainly a bold move that will not backfire at all. Guilt-tripping him into their arms when Caloy isn’t obligated to return in kind is such an audacious act. In this instance, expecting reimbursement from the responsibility that they took isn’t equal nor right. It is of Carlos’ own volition if he will repay, now it’s uncertain if he still would because his mother decided to keep the incentives of his winnings and a rift was made between them. While it is hurtful, a child returning the love and care given to them for so long is indicative of good parenting and a close knit family.

The relationships that were given to us by virtue of birth is nothing without choosing to cultivate and strengthen them.

The proverb “blood is thicker than water” has been referenced many times against him, while it is true, that our given familial bonds will always be stronger than other relationships, it is our chosen bonds that really matter. The family that we choose ourselves will always be stronger than the ones we’re born into. The relationships that were given to us by virtue of birth is nothing without choosing to cultivate and strengthen them. Carlos chose his girlfriend’s side not because she is simply his girlfriend but because her and her family supported him when his own family didn’t, making it clear why, why is she his chosen family.

Our society places such an emphasis on family and the act of giving back, it’s an admirable trait that we practice and one that defines us. It is a shame that it’s only brought up when it’s convenient and used as ammo for dragging others down.

With family being a core part of ourselves as Fiipinos, it is important to understand what makes our family our family, that it is the strength of the connections that we have with each other, the bonds we choose ourselves and that blood relations are hollow without our love at the heart.

resident Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. delivered his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) last July 22. In his speech, he highlighted his administration’s numerous achievements and ambitious goals. However, is he painting a picture of a real or an imaginary progress?

Marcos Jr. proudly claims economic recovery, citing improved GDP growth and increased foreign investments. He also mentioned the success of the Build, Build, Build Program with a belief that infrastructure development would help national growth and decrease unemployment in the country. Hence, the harsh truth is that some sectors are experiencing growth, but a lot of Filipinos are still struggling with how they will survive the day with the increasing costs of living. The minimum monthly wages do not sit right with the current inflation.

Relatively, he boasted the record-high rice yield in the country over the past year hence, the price of the rice in the country continues to rise and the farmers haven’t given proper recognition. He stated that various forces cause the price hike of the goods such as war, supply problems and natural calamities. Although there is some truth to this, it will not change the fact that the administration have the responsibility to come up with a solution to this crisis. Two years have already passed since he promised that the price of rice would be down to P20 per kilo, but why does the price keep on doubling?

In his address, he also emphasized the 5500 flood controls built from the P450 billion budget. Conversely, a few days after the SONA, Typhoon Carina struck the country and numerous areas were submerged in flood. “Marami na

silang flood controls pero nasapawan sa dami ng tubig. So, we have to relook, we have to re-examine some of the designs of our flood control.” He explained in an interview. Recently, the country has been hit by a series of tropical cyclones and the southwest monsoon or Habagat, the death toll has already reached 25. The effects speak in contrast to PBBM’s statement on the disaster preparedness response during his address.

The president received a standing ovation when he talked about the conflict in the West Philippine Sea and Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO). He stated, “Ang West Philippine Sea ay hindi isang kathang-isip natin lamang. Ito ay atin. At ito ay mananatiling atin, hangga’t nag-aalab ang diwa ng ating mahal na bansang Pilipinas.” He also said that the administration is working hard to improve our armed forces and Coast Guard’s capacity. At this moment, our fishermen are still being bullied by the Chinese. He was applauded again after his statement, “I hereby instruct PAGCOR (Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation) to wind down and cease the operation of POGOs by the end of the year,”.

s the world revolves, so does our communication style. In a generation where digital communication is dominating, Gen Z is leading the way in cultural shifts and adding flavors in how we converse online and offline.

Generation Z (Gen Z) also known as Zoomers, are those born between 1997 and 2012. They possess unique characteristics such as being digital natives, creative, and diverse which allows them to navigate the dynamic world of this generation’s lexicon. Here’s the list of some of the most iconic terms that made their generation vibrant:

1. Lit

This is used when something is impressive or exciting. It is often used to describe enthusiastic events or people. You could say, “LSDC’s performance was so lit!”.

6. Vibing

You could say “We’re vibing!” when you are in sync or feeling the same energy with other people.

2. FOMO

It means “Fear of Missing Out”, an uneasiness for being left out in an event while others are having fun excluding you. “I need to secure Olivia Rodrigo’s concert ticket or else I will suffer from my FOMO.”

7. Sus

It is short for “suspicious”, when something is fishy and unusual. Example: “He’s kinda weird today, that’s sus.”

Of Swindlers and Bonds: Lolo and the Kid Film Review | by John Bradley Ibalio

olo and the Kid is a 2024 Philippine drama film that tells the story of the strong bond between Lolo and Kid, as they earn a living through an elaborate method of swindling wealthy families daily and making the most of their haul together and bonding over things that make them grow closer.

One of the memorable moments from the film was their nightly karaoke sessions when they would sing “Through the Years” by Kenny Rogers.

Paying attention to the lyrics, I realized that the song accurately describes how important Kid is to Lolo and how much he changed his life. Even as they ‘take donations’ from the rich, Lolo always ensures that Kid grows up to be a wellmannered child, so he do not end up like him. He goes through a lot of effort so Kid can live a happy life. The song plays recurrently throughout the film to remind us of the special connection between Lolo and Kid. One cannot help but feel and

understand why they both do what they do; for Lolo, swindling the rich was the only way he knew to support themselves. While their methods may be dangerous, they also show how much trust they have for one another by letting Lolo convince the family in adopting Kid and stealing their valuables late at night before escaping.

If you enjoy stories containing characters that share a familial bond, then Lolo and the Kid is worth the watch, especially with friends and family. The director and writer of the film, Benedict Mique, did a spectacular job of letting us connect with the two main leads. Joel Torre and Euwenn Mikaell Aleta also deserve credit for portraying their characters well and letting us connect to them through the emotions they expressed. Overall, the story gave us a look into what lessthan-fortunate could be experiencing today and how the strength of their bond holds them together.

Filipina Power: Dominating the Hallyu World

C

olorful and vibrant hair, unique styles of clothes, Samgyupsal restaurants, Korean drama, creative dance and music—we cannot deny the popularity and influence of Korean culture on the Filipinos. In 2009, a Filipino by heart, Dara, or widely known as Sandara Park, made noise in the K-pop scene. She was a product of a Filipino reality-based talent competition, Star Circle Quest in 2004 and eventually earned the title “Pambansang Krung Krung ng Pilipinas” due to her popularity.

I n her successful debut in Korean entertainment, she sparked the interest of the Filipinos and paved the way for the Hallyu fever in the country, especially K-pop or Korean pop music.

Over the years, with the continued popularity of K-Pop, many Filipinos aspired to join their idols’ world. However, it was not smooth sailing for many Filipinos who are trying their luck to become a part of the Korean entertainment industry as the country may still be in the process of becoming more open to embracing people from diverse racial backgrounds.

It did not take long for the industry to open its doors to other nationalities. In fact, there are already Filipinos who have successfully entered, just like Kriesha Chu, Chantal Vidal (famously known as Chanty), and the pure Filipino group HORI7ON. This year, four Filipinas have victoriously fulfilled their dreams of debuting on the K-Pop stage.

The “Universe Ticket” is a survival show in South Korea with the objective of forming a global project group in which the final debut group is given the name “UNIS.” It consists of 8 members and has a contract to promote for two years and six months.

There were four Filipinas who joined the competition, and three were fortunate to become a part of the final line-up, namely, Elisia Parmisano, Gehlee Dangca and Jin Hyeon Ju also known as Belle.

three Filipinas, another Filipina pride climbed her way up to the top of a tough competition. The Debut: Dream Academy was a survival program by a collaboration between the powerhouse Korean music label HYBE™ and American record label Geffen™. The newest global group KATSEYE was formed through this survival talent show and is composed of six members from various nationalities, including Indian, Venezuelan-Cuban, American, Swiss, Korean and a Filipina.

Sophia Laforteza, 21, is the daughter of a Filipina singer and actress Carla Guevara Laforteza, and her father who was also a dancer. Young Laforteza was already comfortable performing in front of the camera, a factor that helped her to rank first in this Dream Academy finale. Earlier in the competition, she was already a top contender and one of the most anticipated trainees which was proved when she garnered 69,098 fan votes during the first mission of the competition. Currently, she is the lead vocalist and one of the most popular members of the group.

Katseye debuted last June 28, 2024, with their single “Debut” from their extended play (EP) “SIS (Soft Is Strong),” released in August. Their viral song “Touch” is now all over various social media platforms, including TikTok, and many artists have already joined the dance fever. The multinational group held its first Asian tour that started in Seoul last September 12, with a three-day stop in the Philippines, and their September 20-23 visits in Japan marked the end of the tour. Moreover, the journey of the global sensation group was captured through the Netflix documentary series “Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE.”.

A few years ago, we used to watch our Korean idols in different music videos and Korean music shows, but now we are able to see our fellow Filipinos be a part of the K-Pop industry. It is a living testament that in every part of the world, Filipino talents are dominating. They proved to us that there is nothing impossible if we believe and have a fiery passion for our dreams because a dream knows no bounds.

aking over the tropical islands with their refreshing sound, stunning visuals, golden vocals, and addicting choreographies, BINI has captured the hearts of millions of Filipinos. The craze for them did not stop with their hit song “Pantropiko,” as it was immediately followed by another hit song, “Salamin, Salamin,” the song that got everybody shaking their hips while asking the magic mirror where their love is.

Aside from their amazing discography, BINI has the whole country wrapped around their fingers because of their colorful personalities. Which makes you wonder, as a Letranite, are you more like Jhoanna or Aiah? Colet or Maloi?

Maybe Gwen or Stacey? Perhaps Mikha or Sheena? Keep reading to find out!

Jhoanna As the leader of the group, Jhoanna is the responsible type, who is likely to take on the leader role in LQEC groupings. Jhoanna is also a girl of multiple talents so expect a Letranite like her to join almost all the organizations in school. Some might mistake their program to be Bachelor of Science in Organizations.

They also have that “kanto” humor that you will not expect from them.

Aiah A well-traveled person that has time for academics and the gym.

It is a wonder how they balance all three so easily and stay on top of it.

During College Week, you will not be surprised that they are a candidate for Mr. and Ms. Letran and win! Their beauty and brains are unmatched and no one questions it.

Colet Anger is thought to be her main emotion, but Colet is actually a softie within. We all know someone like her that is a no-nonsense person. They shut down rubbish with sarcasm and of course, they are funny–that is like their brand of humor.

Sometimes you annoy or anger them for the fun of it. They are cute when they are angry, but you do not tell them that because they do not like being called cute–they think it decreases their aura. So, it is a surprise when they randomly make a “banat” and become the unexpected love expert. They write love advice on the freedom walls set up by different organizations during events.

Maloi is the type of Letranite that you can hear from a mile away because of the “anik-anik” attached on their bag or in their IDs. They do not need trumpets when they have all sorts of jiggling things to announce their arrival. They are like a Pinterest outfit board with all their amazing outfits. They are the life of every group they are in with how hyper and funny they are. As much as everyone cares for them, they take care of everyone too. It is like the whole campus loves them, even the Green Boys!

Letranites like Gwen are quiet but somehow ended up in a loud and chaotic friend group. They are fed up with their friends’ silly antics but love them nonetheless. They will not join you for a TikTok but they will be there when you need a friend. The rest of the friend group thinks of them as the nonchalant friend. They also love when it is time for ArriBazaar because as a foodie, this is a great opportunity to try out different food.

Mikha

On Wednesdays, they wear pink! Stacey is the Letranite that will take advantage of wash day to wear something pink. They are like if Regina George was not mean, but they are still the Queen Bee of the school. They do not have a bone for social anxiety and their voice is so loud and is almost always screaming. For this reason, they lead their school cheer during Intramurals. Their brand of humor is acting dramatic and exaggerating things. They love to act out a random movie scene from time to time. You could just be at the Student Lounge catching up on some school work and you would hear them going “Kuya!

Stop the car!”.

No one is as iconic in red hair as Mikha, that is why some Letranites who had their red hair phase got called BINI Mikha at some point. They are athletes, most likely a volleyball player, playing during the Intramurals or they are part of the varsity team representing the Colegio during the NCAA South. They have “conyo” tendencies, full “conyo” even. You are amazed that someone actually talks like that. They are a quiet but they have a handful of friends around the campus. If anyone would be dubbed as the “Ultimate Rizzler”, it would be them for their charisma. One smile from them could make you a tickling shade of pink.

Sheena Main dancers like Sheena would be a part of the Letran Street Dance Crew. In every performance, they give their all. Whether it is for a school event or a competition outside the campus, expect them to be on fire! They crack jokes that are so unique and clever. Their laugh that comes after is just as funny too. As the youngest of the friend group, best believe they get their way into almost everything. Craving something from Micro for lunch? Sure, let’s go! They are not afraid to be physically affectionate with their friends. Either it is a hug or a simple lean on the shoulder, these are their ways of saying they love you.

BINI! As you envision yourself among the BINI members as Letranites, which one did resonate with the most?

Perhaps someone you know fits and embodies one of them? Each BINI member has a unique personality that makes them a role model to everyone, no matter which one you are akin to. Twenty-two athletes represented the Philippines in the 2024 Summer Olympics held in Paris that took off from July 26 to August 11,marking the country’s 100th participation in the said competition.

In 2020, Hidilyn Diaz brought home the country’s first ever Olympic gold medal from the Tokyo Olympics, which gave the Filipino athletes some pressure; They did not let the Philippines down on their outstanding performance, despite golfer Bianca Pagdanganan falling short and pole vaulter EJ Obiena, who missed the podium at fourth rank.

The flame of the Filipino heart burned even brighter after Carlos Yulo bagged the first ever gymnastics gold medal for the Philippines in the Paris Olympic Games after finishing Men’s Floor Exercise finals with a score of 15.000. Yulo is also the first Filipino athlete to have a podium finish in this year’s season and giving the first ever gold medal in the field of gymnastics.

Not long after, he made another historic feat as he succeeded in clinching another gold for the Philippines. He brought pride to the country after he dominated the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Vault finals, where he accumulated 15.433 on his first vault and 14.8 on his second vault for a total score of 15.116.

after bagging a bronze medal in the Women’s 50 kg Boxing bout.

She fell short in her fight against Turkey’s Buse Naz Çakıroglu via unanimous decision. Moreover, Nesthy Petecio also took home bronze after the Women’s 57 kg Boxing Semifinals bout against Julia Szeremeta of Poland

through a split decision. This is her second olympic medal following the silver medal during the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 and the Philippines fourth medal.

The 2024 Paris Olympics became the best ever medal haul of the Philippines in Olympics after ranking at 37th tying with Hong Kong and China.

Each year, new names of Filipino athletes sprout in various fields of sports. They soar and make noises in different parts of the world. But, are they receiving enough assistance for their climb of victory?

Even before, it was already a burden for the Filipino athletes for not having enough support from the government, may it be financial or in other aspects.

The lack of funds became an obstacle for those athletes who do not have the means to fund their journey to their dream of becoming champions in their respective sports. They poured out their blood, sweat, and tears just to give honor to the Philippines; Unfortunately, some of them were unable to continue their journey due to being unsupported.

Many athletes have already sought help from the public because the government failed them, just like the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz. In 2019, Diaz expressed her hardships, especially her struggles with funding for her match in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Instead of receiving financial support, she received negative remarks from the supporters of then President Duterte and was even told she was arrogant and ungrateful. She was even red-tagged because of her openness about her struggles. Similarly, the figure skater, Michael Martinez also admitted he was facing difficulties in funding for the 2022 Winter Olympics. In his eagerness to continue pursuing his dream, he personally organized a fundraising campaign where he received donations and support from private individuals.

On the other hand, maybe some of us were touched by the story of Bince Rafael Operiano, the 9-year-old chess genius kid from Albay. Together with his father, they slept at the airport for three nights, and were no’t able to be with his father in traveling to Thailand for the competition. Nevertheless, it did not

become a hindrance for the kid for him to bring the championship at the 6th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship.

In the recently concluded 2024 Paris Olympics, the athletes who successfully brought medals to the country, especially historic two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Carlos Yulo, were showered with incentives–but where are those individuals when the athletes are facing hardships during their training and when they are still just building themselves? When should we pay attention and give support to our athletes, only when they have already won and brought pride to our country?

Honestly, they were only given proper support and recognition when they already brought back medals and trophies. The government is just in the scene whenever the athletes are making noise and establishing their own names in the world. They were raising the name and the flag of the Philippines in competitions, and their victory is the victory of the entire nation; therefore, they should receive adequate support in all aspects.

Helping and supporting our Filipino athletes should not only start when they already won, but we should walk with them while they were just dreaming until they reached the peak of their success.

Filipinos are rich in talents especially when it comes to sports, so it is not impossible that more athletes will bring pride and honor to the country if they receive the right support and attention. There are also athletes who are excelling in different sports such as gymnastics, boxing, golf and many more.

Unfortunately, the massive support is still mainly given to Basketball athletes.

If their fights are for the whole nation, why are we only with them in victories and not during the journey?

A Golden Boy’s Tale LIFE’S A BALL

Caloy Yulo, the Philippines’ “Golden Boy” of gymnastics, became a household name after he etched his name in the history of Philippine sports; But who was Carlos Yulo before he became a double Olympic gold medalist?

he Filipino gymnast was born on February 16, 2000 in Malate, Manila.

He started his gymnastics journey at the age of seven and already showed his unwavering passion for his sport. Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) president, Cynthia Carrion, saw the talent within him and became his mentor in the early years of his career. At the age of 16, he was sent to train in Japan under the tutelage of Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya before parting ways in 2023.

Before his historic Olympic win, Yulo had been making noise in the realm of sports and established his own name in the field of gymnastics.

The 2018 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Doha paved the way for his blossoming career, where he won bronze in the floor exercise and became the first male Southeast Asian gymnast who earned a medal at the World Championships.

He made another breakthrough in 2019 after his victorious win bagging the gold medal in the floor exercise at the World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany that qualified him for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In the 2024 Paris Olympics, Caloy fulfilled his promise of redemption after falling short in Tokyo in 2020. He was the first Filipino to reach the podium and earn a medal in the 2024 campaign. Yulo ignited the fiery hearts of the Filipinos when he successfully took home 2 olympic gold medals after dominating in the Men’s Floor Exercise and Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Vault finals. That day, he became the Philippines’ historic first double Olympic gold medalist.

After all the rigorous training and unsuccessful landings, he managed to unleash the champion within him with the support of his team as it takes a village to raise a champion, teaching us through his journey that passion and perseverance will never fail us.
