Ottima annata per il kite…

Il 2016 si avvia verso la fine (anche se in realtà io sono in ottica 2017 da Giugno), ed è un buon momento per pensare a cosa è successo quest’anno...

Come in tutti gli sport, si parla di top level, visto che solo a quel livello si possono trarre giudizi che su eventi che tutti conoscono e che interessano a tutti. Gli ultimi due anni sono stati a dir poco problematici – forse da kiter può non essere fondamentale per te, ma per molti l’unico collegamento con il kite sono le competizioni, e se la parte competitiva di uno sport soffre, tutto il movimento ne soffre...

Il 2016 non sembrava iniziasse nel modo migliore...

Nessun tour all’orizzonte, infinite discussioni, e poche news. Ma dopo 12 mesi la situazione è cambiata, drasticamente, con un tour freestyle ed uno wave veramente ben avviati e strutturati, con il sigillo del World Sailing. Tutto bene quindi? Si vedrà, ma le premesse sono buone per far sì che il nostro sport abbia l’attenzione che merita...

Spero che tu abbia avuto un buon anno, con nuovi tricks chiusi, magari qualche onda da ricordare, o le prime sessioni foil. Ci sono stati progressi, ne sono sicuro. Il che è una delle cose migliori del kite, si progredisce sempre, qualunque sia l’età...

Parlando della rivista, è stato un anno incredibile, abbiamo lavorato duro ed i risultati si vedono, più pagine, più contenuti, oltre 40000 follower su instagram.

Quindi grazie a tutti, e cercheremo di migliorare nel 2017!

BP: Tutto iniziò con un road trip con Oswal Smith ed il Dirty Habits team.

La location esatta di questa laguna è segreta, ma la direzione è verso una delle città più grandi del Sud Africa, vicino alla False Bay. E dimenticavo quasi, ci vuole un permesso speciale, visto che è una laguna pubblica.

Stavamo lavorando con i ragazzi di Dirty Habits ad una nuova web serie, in questo viaggio avevamo Oswald Smith, Carl Ferreira, Graham Howes, Jop Heemskerk ed io ovviamente.

Un giorno perfetto, 28 gradi e 17 nodi, un’avventura incredibile ed una foto veramente bella, un bel riassunto della giornata.

FB: Lo snowboard ed il wakeboard sono sempre per me fonte d’ispirazione. Vedo tricks, e penso

a come riprodurli sul kite. Nello snow, gli one footers sono piuttosto comuni, con spins o flips. Felix Gerogii, uno dei migliori waker tedeschi, fà one footers su kickers super stiloso e creativo, sopratutto se combinato con spins e grabs.

Mi sono allenato con questo trick sul cable, per poi provarlo sul kilte.

Abbiamo scelto lo spot con la migliore acqua piatta nei paraggi, e Mads si è posizionato per la foto di fianco al kicker. Ottenere il giusto angolo non è stato semplice a cause della velocità e del vento un po’ rafficato, ma dopo alcuni crash quello che vedere è il risultato.

ER: Ero a Pintang, in Cina, per la IKA IKA World Championship. Era la mia prima volta in Cina e non sapevo bene cosa aspettarmi. La cosa più strana probabilmente è che in spiaggia ci sono persone che si coprono dalla testa ai piedi ed indossano addirittura maschere per non abbronzarsi. Essere pallidi è cool, ed è difficile avere un ragazzo se si è abbronzate, per lo meno così mi raccontavano le ragazze del posto. E’ probabilmente un segno del fatto che non si lavora all’aperto, apparentemente una cosa non bella da queste parti. La cosa divertente è che adorano la cultura Americana, che è veramente fan dell’abbronzatura, e sopratutto adoravano la mia!

LP: Hochwang offre tutto quello che uno snow kiter può amare. Dopo due ski-lift, si arriva a 2284m sopra il livello del mare, e la norma vorrebbe che uno sciatore a questo punto scendesse a valle. Per noi è solo l’inizio. Con il vento giusto, puoi salire ulteriormente e andare su discese in neve fresca, un playground infinito.

In questa giornata di Febbraio avevo anche un mucchio di materiale per riprendere Marco Köppel su e giù dalle montagne…

GH: Solo 3 ore di break fra le lezioni, quindi una sessione super di fretta. Il vento era salito solo a metà sessione, ed ero totalmente depowered con il mio 8m Roam. In questa foto ho affrontato il lip in ritardo (ed infatti c’è un mucchio d’acqua), e non è stato facile tenere in piedi questo trick ed atterrare!

Difficile da credere, ma questa sessione è stata un disa stro. L 'o nda è super fo togenica, ma si rompe così vicino ch e il ven to è molto strano. Fortunatamen t e una raffichina mi ha aiutato in questa fo to, e se guardi bene vedi alcuni bloccati nell 'inside (forse Moona!) - non bello.

Quest'o nda è da sempre una delle mie fa vori t e, ed è un peccato a ver a vuto solo una sola bre ve sessione quest'a nno. Il ven to è perfetto come direzione, e l 'o nda si posiziona bene per gli airs. Cosa non si vede in questa fo to? Una nuvola gigan t e scura ch e si muove verso di noi, con l 'in t enzione di uccidere il ven to (cosa ch e succederà 20 minuti dopo). Cose ch e succedono.

Si tuazione familiare per noi in Indonesia. Con il poco ven to ch e c'e ra, abbiamo scoperto ch e la cosa più semplice è fare body drag upwind per tornare alla lineup. Questa onda è un piccolo tubo con una corren t e inversa ch e aiuta nell 'upwind sorprenden t emen t e bene. Qui vediamo Moona, Matt, Ryland e me tornare len tamen t e upwind. Credi to a Ryland Blakeney per a ver iniziato questo trend alcuni anni fa, quando ci trovammo con questo ven to ed un 8m.

Finalmen t e! Con una sola mareggiata rima sta nel foreca st, ho deciso di cambiare volo e di sperare ch e fosse quella giusta.

Ottima scelta. Il problema è ch e questo spo t ha un wind foreca st piuttosto difficile da predire. In effetti non era male, ma bisogna va veramen t e la vorare per ottenere il ma ssimo, poco ven to, e molt e camminat e per arri vare dove vole vi arri vare. All fin fine sono sali to su una barca per prendere le migliori onde, e per t enere il ki t e in aria con la po t enza necessaria mi sono spostato a ki t e loop. L e poch e onde prese erano perfette, tubi ottimi e fra i più puli ti mai presi. Una sessione da ricordare con la mia 13m.

Dopo a ver preso alcune onde, il ven to è di ven tato scuro e la pioggia è arri vata quando ancora ero fuori senza ven to ho dovuto nuo tare, con la pioggia a risciaquarmi!

L e giornat e senza ven to sono perfette per esplorare. Un bre ve tra fitto in macchina ci ha portato a questa bellissima costa immacolata. Incredibile come, cosĂŹ lon tani da ca sa, a volt e dimen tichiamo di esplorare il mondo e ci dedichiamo, forse troppo, al ki t e.

Sono venuto in Indonesia con poca esperienza di onde sinistre, e l I' ndonesia è famosa per essere la t erra delle sinistre, quindi quando c'è una sessione di destre non è da perdere. A Mauri tius, dove era vamo due settimane prima, usci vo per lo più back side, ma ancora è innaturale per me, e non è bello uscire comodo quando sai ch e si dovrà scattare in camera. Pro Tips: Foil Physics OKAY, NOT STRICTLY ‘TIPS’, BUT HERE WE HAVE MICHAEL OCHS FROM LEVITAZ FOILS TAKING US THROUGH EXACTLY WHAT’S GOING ON WHEN – LIKE SOMETHING IMPOSSIBLE FROM THE FUTURE – WE ARE ABLE TO STRAP OURSELVES TO A FOIL, ELEVATE OURSELVES ABOVE THE WATER, AND SCREAM AROUND FASTER AND MORE EFFICIENTLY THAN ANYTHING ELSE ON THE HIGH SEAS…

HOW DOES IT WORK? The best way to comprehend what is going on with a hydrofoil is to think of it as an airplane that flies in the water. Then the rider controls the speed and direction by transmitting their weight.

Simply explained, the buoyancy and lift is generated from the pressure differences between the upper and lower side of the wing. With sufficient speed and angle of attack on the front wing, the hydrofoil generates buoyancy force and lifts the kiteboard over the water surface.

Once the board has left the water surface, the drag is reduced to a fractional amount.

Therefore, hydrofoils allow extraordinary upwind angles as well as unbelievable low end abilities compared to a twin tip. If you want to quantify this in figures, the key performance indicator is the ratio between lateral force and drag: a twin tip shows a key figure of 2.0 in comparison to a race hydrofoil with a key figure of 10.0.

The control of a foil is also totally different to a conventional kiteboard. In addition to the direction, the flying height has to be adjusted. This opens up entirely new possibilities for the rider which had never existed before and aside from being vastly more efficient, due to the board riding above the water itself, choppy water no longer exists.

FOIL PHYSICS

HOW DOES THE FOIL BEHAVE IN THE WATER?

Front wing.

Hydrofoils move in a three-dimensional space. In order to describe the orientation in the 3D space, we use terms that are usually applied to aircraft. Therefore terms of flight control like “roll”, “pitch” and “yaw angle” are common.

The front wing determines the lifting forces of the foil.

The larger the surface of the wing, the stronger the lift will be.

This results in a lower take-off velocity (which is necessary to begin foiling). Stability and maneuverability are affected due to the span and design of the wings. A higher aspect ratio leads to higher performance of the foil.

Hydrofoils rotate around three axes: the lateral axis, the

longitudinal axis, and the vertical axis. The meeting point, in which all three axes converge, is called the “center of rotation”.

Rear wing.

The rear wing works as a stabilizer and provides deviation, similar to the elevator unit of an airplane.

In the case of the hydrofoil, it stabilizes the pitch and yaw axis.

Fuselage.

The fuselage connects the mast with the front and rear wing. The longer the fuselage, the more stable the foil in pitch axis (with the same size rearwing). In other words, the longer the fuselage the smaller the rearwing can be and - up to a certain point - this reduces the drag of the foil.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN COMPONENTS OF A FOIL? Mast.

The mast is the connection between the board and the wings and is available in different lengths. In order to transmit a rider’s forces without loss, maximum stiffness of the mast is necessary.

At the first glance it looks like a shorter mast is easier to ride. But a certain space between the water and the board can make riding easier. Sizes between 80 and 100cm are common for freeride foils. Racers prefer longer masts up to 115cm due to their extreme lean angles (role axis).

Different systems are available for mounting the mast to the board.

The most common are 4-screwplate connections and standard boxes which are adopted from windsurfing such as the deep tuttle box.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE MANEUVERABILITY AND STABILITY? Each component of the hydrofoil has a massive effect on its maneuverability and stability. The designer´s objective is to find a balance between those two extremes.

The relevant question is not: which characteristics are better, stability or maneuverability? But rather: what type of foil does the designer want to create?

No object which is in motion will be absolutely stable or totally maneuverable, so there is always the fine line between maneuverability and stability, and minor changes of the components of the foil will influence the riding characteristics significantly. Hence there are a lot of different foils on the market and – if you are planning to purchase one – you must look very closely as small differences in the foil have a big effect in how they ride!

Non ho proprio una dieta ideale! Gelato e cioccolata, e se mi sento in vena, della frutta. Mia madre è più sana, e sta provando a cambiare il modo di mangiare mio, di Guy e Olly. A volte in frigo trovo cose che sembrano muco di rana e smoothie marroni che onestamente non mi sono di grande ispirazione.

Con l’età riesci sempre a progredire?

A

Quando ero più piccolo, ed avevo appena cominciato, miglioravo veramente velocemente, ogni giorno imparavo qualcosa di nuovo.

Arrivato ai 13 anni avevo già molti tricks, ma nessuno veramente potente – a questo punto ho iniziato a lavorare sulla muscolatura.

Dopo l’infortunio dell’anno scorso al ginocchio, ho continuato a lavorare in palestra, sempre più forte, più alto, ed i miglioramente si vedono quest’anno.

Hai preso parte recentemente al photo shoot di NKB. Che cosa ti è piaciuto di più del viaggio? E parlaci un attimo della fontana di cioccolato...

A

Veramente bello essere invitato a Mauritius per questo evento, non ci ero mai stato ed è sempre interessante visitare un posto nuovo. One Eye con Sebastian Ribeiro, incredibile e potente, e tutte le sessioni freestyle molto belle ed istruttive per me. Anche nuovo uscire a One Eye con la mia twin twip – fuori dalla mia confort zone sicuramente, con Matchu, Airton, Patri e Tom Hebert sicuramente più a loro agio con quei mostri d’acqua.

Pazzesco. Parlando della macchina del cioccolato, condividevo la stanza con Sebastian Ribeiro, e di fianco alla nostra stanza c’era questa macchina, non male!

Fai molti altri sports, alcuni di questi piuttosto cool.

Quali sono, e cosa ti piace di più del kite?

A

Effettivamente faccio molto altro. Adoro il surf e lo snowboard, e ultimamente mi sto dedicando alla mountain bike. Il problema di questi sport è che di solito hai bisogno di una location specifica per farli, e questa è la ragione per cui preferisco il kite - visiti posti nuovi ed hai solo bisogno di vento ed acqua. Oltre a questo, il kite ti permette di progredire molto, ed imparare nuove cose in maniera piuttosto semplice e progressiva.

Questo è stato sicuramente un ottimo anno per te, nuovi trick ed una vittoria in Italia. Pronto per un grande 2017?

Cosa mangia un campione del kitesurf ?

Mi piacerebbe fare più competizioni possibili, ma prima devo finire i miei GCS, a questo punto entro Giugno. Se li passo, avrò tutto il tempo per viaggiare e competere, ma dovrò aspettare.

Come è stato recuperare dal tuo infortunio al ginocchio, e come vedi il tuo futuro?

A

8 mesi non sono passati in fretta, non vedevo l’ora di tornare in acqua. Ho avuto un mucchio di supporto da Harris e Ross in Manchester, grazie alla loro piscina e alla piscina ad idroterapia, ed è stato un bene aver lavorato con loro. CTi mi ha anche fornito dei supporti per il ginocchio perfetti. Adesso che sono tornato in acqua, li uso su entrambe le ginocchia per essere più tranquillo, ma continuo a spingere come prima.

Su cosa stai lavorando in questo momento, e cosa pensi degli altri tuoi competitors nel tour mondiale?

A

Ho molte cose in ballo al momento, posso fare la maggior parte dei 7s e sto provando il Front Blind Mobe 5 ed alcune cose veramente innovative. Penso che il tour stia progredendo alla grande - un mucchio di 7s e 9s, anche se c’è un limite da rispettare, altrimenti si rischia a tornare alle cose che si vedevano 3 anni fa (tempo che io adoravo). E’ comunque stupendo vedere Carlos Mario o Liam fare 2 o 3 handle passes, oltre ad essere molto difficile è anche rischioso. Continuerò a lavorare su questo aspetto dello sport, cercando però di non perdere di vista l’aspetto tecnico.

Mike Raper, who is now Division Manager at NeilPryde One Design Kites, takes us through the whirlwind journey that has resulted in the recent launch of CR:X and then its adoption by World Sailing as a ‘Class’. So. What does it all mean?!

Okay, let’s start at the beginning. For the uninitiated, in a few sentences can you summarize: What is CR:X? At NeilPryde we are expanding our one-design program into kite racing with the introduction of CR:X, the world’s first one-design kite racing class. CR:X is an innovative, versatile kite racing

platform that features a convertible board which can be switched between TT and foil modes. Multiple modes mean that the same set of hardware can be used for beginner or more advanced foil races or in changing weather conditions.

Our mission is to create a community of kite racing enthusiasts of all levels and abilities and enable them to race on a level and affordable playing field. CR:X delivers on this promise through a one-design pathway Class where riders can compete on affordable and matched equipment.

What makes up the ‘complete’ CR:X equipment package?

The full CR:X pack consists of three kites (7, 10 and 13m), 55cm bar, convertible board with fin and foil sets, and then the pump and a travel bag. The whole set up comes in at under 25kg so can be easily checked in for travel.

The set up encompasses options for different racing ‘disciplines’ within one set of equipment. Can you summarize what these are?

Yes, so the CR:X board has been designed to be ridden in two distinctly different modes for varying conditions and race formats.

So there is Twin Tip Mode which allows the board to be used as a normal, bi-directional kiteboard. The board is designed to be used by kiteboarders of all skill levels and is best suited for stronger winds, course racing or compact boardercross race formats.

Then there is Hydrofoil Mode where the board is fitted with a foil. Due to the efficiency of a hydrofoil, this mode is ideal for light winds, upwind/downwind course racing and long distance races. The hydrofoil brings a higher level of excitement but also technicality to the CR:X package.

Can you take us through the build and construction of the twin tip and the foil?

The board is unique and progressive within kiteboarding as the first twin tip board to be truly convertible between twin tip and hydrofoil racing. The board has a moderate rocker line with a modern straight outline, suitable for the first time rider through to a top end racer. The stance widths and binding positions can be adjusted to accommodate a range of athlete weights and sizes.

The board’s core is Paulownia wood, with ABS rails and a durable fiberglass laminate. The board has a stiff flex characteristic, ideal for both the twin tip or hydrofoil modes.

Then the foil has been designed to promote progressive racing.

The moderate aspect ratio wing is fast yet forgiving. The wing profile allows the first time foiler to easily lift up at low speeds, yet the wings have low enough drag that the athlete can drive the foil at speed around the race course. In terms of build, the CR:X foil wings are molded from a super tough carbon composite, ensuring they are durable and hard-wearing. The consistency of the construction of each wing is critical, as the equipment must be the same for each athlete. To achieve this the wings are molded under very high pressure, providing a high quality and consistent finish. Both the mast and fuselage are made from aircraft grade 6061 aluminum that is stiff, lightweight, durable and affordable (in comparison to a full carbon piece!).

And then there are ‘shims’ – can you explain the effect of these?

Yes, a unique feature of the CR:X foil package is the ability to change the angle of attack of the rear wing. This is possible due to different shim sizes that can be adjusted. This allows a first time rider to increase the angle and provide more lift, making it easier to get foiling. As the rider’s skills progress they may reduce this angle thus reducing drag and increasing top end speed and performance.

You have three kite sizes within the package, 7, 10 and 13m. Do you think this covers most conditions and most rider weights?

Yes, we think so – we have had youth form body weights in light winds planing on foils in 5-6 knots all the way through to heavyweight riders in TT mode in 40 knots. The great thing about the equipment is that it is so versatile, it can be used in so many different conditions and adjustable to so many different body weights and sizes. Great for the race officer or Chapter Ambassador running local races is that they can choose the set up based on the conditions and location of that day’s racing. It really is versatile.

And you have run a few events – were these successful and can you take us through the format of these?

Yes, it’s been an amazing start! Events so far include Mui Nei, Phan Rang, Sail Melbourne World Cup, World Sailing Youth Worlds in Auckland, all before the end of 2016. Then looking forward to 2017 we have some massive plans for an international tour.

The CR:X was designed to be adopted in a club racing environment – do you see the potential for this to take off?

Our vision is to create a kite movement which will bring together people from all over the world with a common goal of kiting, having fun and setting challenges. To enable this vision to develop we will be setting up local chapters and ambassadors.

The Chapters will be run by individual ambassadors, sailing associations or clubs, and will support training, races and freeriding at their local kite beaches and sailing spots. With the help of Chapters, the class will run local, regional, national and international events to include all levels and abilities. At the heart of the Chapter is the Ambassador who is the torchbearer – the person that leads Chapter members for race training, weekly events, long distance races and fun introductory days. The aim is to give kiters an outlet to join together, share, look after each other on and off the water and help spread the word about our sport. CR:X is here to encourage inclusivity and accessibility, to grow the community and, most importantly, to put new feet on boards and get people enjoying kiteboarding.

CR:X was recently recognized by World Sailing as a Class. Can you explain what this means?

What a journey it’s been! Late nights and long weekends developing and testing the CR:X while holding down my day job at Cabrinha as division manager. Exhausting is an understatement, it’s been tougher than anything I’ve ever done before, but we freaking did it! World Sailing recognized the CR:X Class as a WS Class. This probably means nothing to most people, but it meant a heck of a lot to us. There is still a long road ahead, but it’s a massive hurdle overcome.

How long was the CR:X in development?

We had a year of development from November 2015, when the concept was born, to delivery in October 2016. We really leveraged what we had within the Pryde Group: 16 years of kite design, 40 years of manufacturing within our own facility, and our experienced international distribution, so we have delivered a quality offering and we expect great things from the Class and

Competitive foiling has obviously really taken over on the race scene now with a pretty incredible increase in the technology and R&D driving the top guys ever faster – is your hope that this scene continues to evolve and the top pros then also begin engaging in the CR:X class and events?

The Foil Gold Cup and the Formula Class are awesome, it really is pushing the sport and equipment to the limit and we love this developmental aspect of the sport. The NeilPryde brand has been at the forefront of Formula windsurfing and kitesurfing for many years.

We do not expect the current generation of athletes in the IKA Formula Class to cross over to the CR:X – they are chasing their dreams of high tech development and evolution. The CR:X is attracting the grassroots community within the sport, and the local and national beaches will eventually have Chapters all over the world, where anyone can freely turn up and race in a fun environment with other like minded people.

Is there scope to continue to tweak the package or are you locked in to it now it’s been recognized by WS? One Design means there are no changes allowed, that’s it. So it will stay the same unless the members of the Class decide to change it. The great thing is that the Class is elected by their own members, they decide what to do with the Class and the modifications, so as a supplier we need to follow the guidelines of the members of the Class.

So is the eventual aim the Olympics?

CR:X is not designed to be an Olympic Class. It has been designed to be a Feeder and Pathway Class.

We are not saying it can’t be an Olympic Class, but CR:X’s primary focus is to help people get into TT and Hydrofoil racing.

Can you take us through the next steps for the CR:X? The goal is to develop racing at all four levels, with a strong international spread into developing nations. Our strategy is to focus on strong support for the first three levels of local, regional and national events. We need to make sure these are solid with a high level of participation.

And then there is also hope of bigger events?

Yes, on the international side it’s an incredibly exciting time. We are in negotiations with a major sponsor to support an international championship with incredible prize money. The benefits of a major sponsor are that they can dedicate a strong media budget. This budget allows us to use digital technology to educate the viewer by making it easy for them to understand.

The challenge with kiteracing in foil and TT mode is that it can be hard to understand, so our goal is to partner with a media team and sponsor who can make it easy for the viewer to follow and enjoy.

The future is wide open, it’s so exciting to see the potential and be involved in the birth of this new Class and movement. The feedback so far has been amazingly positive, and we can’t want to share it with everyone!

Here’s how it looked for the WKL event on the island...

I might be misguided, but when you mention the word kiteboarding to me my thoughts immediately turn to a very special, one-of-a-kind place. It washes over me in waves of warmth. In a surge of relief I picture a place that not only represents the sport of kiteboarding as I desire it to be, but a place that makes me feel far from my troubles, far from traffic lights, far from crowded elevators and far from everything that tethers me to modern life. I imagine consistently windy, white sand, palm-clad beaches with lush low-rise tropical jungle as far as you can see. I feel the warm air across my cheeks, the stick of the salty humid air on my palate and skin. I imagine brightly illuminated turquoise water filled with shadows of scattering aquatic life; I can see the outlines of intricate reef systems filled with the healthy vegetation indicative of a thriving ecosystem. I see a bikini-wearing brown-skinned girl beckoning me with a single finger to come closer, to let go, to ‘jump in’… and I do, every single time.

I am the first to admit that my imagination is an amazing place to retreat to when the stress of life piles on, but the place I have just described does not only live in the hypothetical – this is reality in Dominican Republic.

Dominican Republic has existed as an enchanting destination for wind sports for over three decades. It is a tropical Caribbean paradise shrouded in the shadows of the coco trees. It is a smile-laden country where a fruitful feast literally grows on trees, the wind blows strong, and the measures of happiness and wealth are synonymous. Making up the eastern portion of the Island of Hispaniola, Dominican Republic has green rolling hills and lush forests covering over three eighths of the entire island. Neighboured by Haiti to the west,

DR is the second largest Caribbean nation (out-populated

by Cuba), and pokes out at the most easterly point of the windward island chain of the Greater Antilles. It is semi-triangular in shape with the nubby point of Punta Cana facing southeast towards Puerto Rico. This orientation makes up part of the secret formula Dominican Republic has of being such a consistent kite destination. The winds in the Caribbean are composed primarily of trade winds, blowing out of the east. The north coast of the island dips just enough into the wind to produce side onshore conditions like clockwork. Pretty much every day between 12 and 2pm you’ll see 16–22 knots of consistent open ocean winds coming in. It’s even more helpful that the north coast faces out into the open Atlantic, exposed to swells coming off the east coast of the US, and the tropical cyclones spinning from Africa.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

It is common for DR surf kiters to enjoy 6–8-foot-long period swells in the winter time, and larger short period swells in the fall. And it is good on a twin tip all year round…

The obvious spots in DR attract all the tourists for a classic formula of travel and comfort. Kiters flock to the popular destinations of Cabarete and Punta Cana. Cabarete has a place in kiteboarding history and has been at the hub of the

world of wind sports since their conception. The town has long been a hotbed for the committed wind freak, hell-bent on learning the newest wind-driven sport. It is a town built on adventure, and it is roughly five miles long; a beach road strung with wind-oriented shops, bars, and restaurants of endless origins and appetites. Influenced by an incredible melting pot of cultures, the small hustling town reflects less of Dominican culture and more the impressions of the thousands of visitors.

If you continue through town and drive east then the road begins to open up. At the red archway make a left and travel past old Casa Roma, a deserted and spooky vacant resort that signifies a boom time in Cabarete’s eco-tourism history. Then at the end of the road follow the sand trail to La Boca. At the mouth of the Rio Yasica river is one of the best flat-water spots in the world. Protected by the ox-bowing mouth of the river you will see fairly smooth conditions and winds ripping in through the valley. While you’re there, take the outboard motor charter across the river to the café on the adjacent side; reflect on your session or toss your kite up for one more go.

La Boca isn’t exactly a secret, yet there never seem to be many people out there. And this is the unbelievable thing about DR: most

of the travelers stick to the resort. Cabarete offers beach access resort living and amazing conditions, however this enticing formula keeps kiters away from exploring the coast’s many other epic spots.

The steep photogenic cliffs, wide-open spaces and seemingly untouched beaches that make up much of the north coast... To drive along it is breathtaking in itself, to stop and take it in for an afternoon is an incredible experience. Then, as you sit along the warm stretches of beach taking your sunglasses on and off and wondering if your lenses have anything to with how absolutely blue the water is (then realize they don’t), consider the vastness of untouched space to your left and to your right, the peace and quiet only interrupted by waves pounding the reef exposed by the falling tide. And then you will know that you have arrived in Dominican Republic.

MOST LIKELY TO HEAR: “Same again tomorrow?”

GETTING THERE Fly in to Puerto Plata and drive east along the coast into Cabarete for the easiest approach.

More comfortable travelers may save a few bucks on flying into Santo Domingo and then driving the long way up to the coast.

ANDRE MAGARAO Sono veramente fortunato a lavorare in diverse parti della fotografia durante tutto l’anno, ma sempre non vedo l’ora di dedicarmi al kite brasiliano...

Per me il kite è una delle cose più divertenti e cool da fotografare: ha un po’ di tutto. E’ veloce come il wake, il che lo rende difficile per il fotografo, ma non hai il limite delle barche e dei jet skis. Ha l’aspetto acquatico del surf, ma non sei limitato dalla necessità delle onde. Ed inoltre è possibile interagire con il rider durante una sessione, come per la BMX e lo snowboard.

E’ un lavoro di squadra, e per questo mi piace.

Inoltre in Brasile il paesaggio è stupendo, fa caldo ed è molto comodo essere in laguna.

Una grande stagione, come sempre. Forse non produttiva come al solito, visto che per alcuni problemi sono dovuto tornare a casa un paio di volte, ma non mi posso lamentare. Ho lavorato con alcuni dei miei riders preferiti, ed ho potuto sperimentare alcune nuove idea (di cui alcune fallimentari) – mi piace provare ed imparare cose nuove! Sicuramente ciò che ho appreso lo potrò riutilizzare in un futuro prossimo nel kite, ed ho ovviamente già in mente nuove idea per la prossima stagione.

Ho fatto anche alcuni cliè quest’anno, quindi non solo foto, ma una costante progressione in una nuova disciplina. Molti riders hanno chiuso dei gran bei tricks, ed il video sarà sicuramente apprezzato. Non voglio rovinare la sorpresa, ci sarà da divertirsi...

YOURI ZOON Il Brasile in questo periodo dell’anno è stupendo. Vento tutti i giorni, e niente muta (ben diverso da casa). Il vento è veramente costante, il che permette di lavorare sui tricks più ostici senza troppi problemi. Dal punto di vista fotografico, lavorare con Andre è veramente bello – a volte può essere difficile fare una sessione con me, visto che voglio sempre uno spot e condizioni perfette. Ma quando questo avviene, non mi tiro mai indietro!

Questo però non basta per fare belle foto, ci vogliono altri elementi, ed è qui che Andre mi dà una mano – è sempre al posto giusto e l’attrezzatura è perfetta, non c’è niente di peggio di chiudere un trick incredibile e non vedere il flash.

Al momento, tutti i miei sforzi sono nel seguire Bebe - è una bestia! Tutto va bene, sono in forma e continuo a migliorare, anche se non sono proprio un rider di primo pelo. Ho passato un po’ di tempo con il mio RPM e sono piuttosto a gusto.

Il problema del Brasile è che è troppo tranquillo, quindi cerco di venire più volte l’anno, per concentrare le mie energie in un più breve periodo.

CARLOS ‘BEBE’ MARIO Vivere in Brasile è veramente una figata. C’è sempre da fare, gran belle condizioni per il kite, e diverse opzioni disponibili.

Essere nato a Cauipe e poterci uscire tutti i giorni, mi fa pensare a come possono essere le Hawaii per un surfista – il posto perfetto. Qui le condizioni sono ideali, caldo e ventoso, e lavorare con Andre, uno dei migliori fotografi che abbia mai incontrato è perfetto.

B R U N A K A J I YA Non mi capita spesso di passare un intero mese in uno stesso spot, ma quando capita, sono contenta di essere a Cumbuco. Non solo per le condizioni epiche, ma anche per lo stile di vita, semplice e tranquillo: una piccola cittadina dove puoi andare ovunque in maglietta ed infradito spendendo un dollaro in spiedini di pollo con i locals.

L’atmosfera è ottima, e ciò influisce sulla mia performance, a letto presto e sveglia presto.

Riesco a focalizzarmi sul kite meglio che in altri posti.

E per le foto è anche ottimo – vento costante tutti i giorni, anche di notte, come si vede nella foto. E l’acqua è bassa in molti punti, il che aiuta Andre a prendere le posizioni ideali con il flash.

PAULA NOVOTNÁ Passo molto tempo in Brasile, lo adoro, è un posto senza pensieri. Sempre ventoso, soleggiato, ottime vibrazioni, ed un mucchio di amici con cui allenarsi. Ho anche imparato a parlare portoghese, quindi so come muovermi in questa nazione.

Mi piace lavorare con Andre, è una persona tranquilla ma sicura di sè, che capisce ciò che noi riders vogliamo. Ottiene sempre il risultato che si è prefissato con una foto: è esigente e sà essere preciso nel chiederci cosa dobbiamo fare e dove farlo. Grazie Andre per le ore spese dietro la macchina fotografica!

INVERNO AFRICANO

Ogni anno, quando la stagione vede il suo gran finale a Cape Town, mi sento chiedere spesso: “Programmi per l’inverno?”. Negli anni passati ammetto che la risposta era sempre stata piuttosto esotica, Bali, Mauritius, Dubai... Ma quest’anno il tutto era molto meno glamour – andare ancora più a Sud in Africa.

Non è lontano da casa, ed è molto poco noto nella comunità dei kiters e dei surfers – un mucchio di point breaks e lagune, con vento costante offshore la mattina e crossshore nel pomeriggio...

Preparati però a passare un mucchio di tempo in macchina.

Con questo bene in mente, ero pronto alla mia avventura africana.

Anzitutto un trip fotografico con il mio fratellino di Instagram @craighowes lavorando su una campagna per Amazon Kindle:, #havekindlewilltravel. Con le nostre valigie, una 4x4, tende e gadgets vari, eravamo pronti a partire. Stop 1: Blyde River Canyon; Stop 2: Kruger National Park; Stop 3: Mozambique; Stop 4: Kosi Bay; Stop 5: Durban. 3000km in 6 giorni, non si scherza.

Non era una esplorazione solo con il kite in mente, era una possibilità di uscire da Cape Town e vedere una parte del continente africano veramente non bene esplorata. Nella prima settimana non ho nemmeno pompato il mio kite. Abbiamo invece scalato alberi enormi, incontrato delle Cheetah (una mi ha rubato la GoPro), navigato in canoa fra gli ippopotami, bevuto un mucchio di R&R (rum e raspberry), persi nella Giungla tentando pateticamente di orientarci con le stelle e molto altro... Bellissimo Niente più vento, forecast, mareggiate. A volte può essere frustante dipendere da queste cose. Verso la fine però, il 12m è stato finalmente preparato per una mini sessione da 20 minuti, giusto il tempo per far volare il nostro drone.

INVERNO AFRICANO

Dopo 6 giorni e con oltre 30 ore alle spiaggie in macchina

di viaggio, avevamo gli scatti per la campagna, ma mi era rimasta la voglia di kite.

In aereoporto incontrai un surfer che mi parlava di una mareggiata in arrivo, e la decisione era presa: rimandare il mio viaggio di una settimana e lasciar partire da solo mio fratello. In macchina con Google Earth alla ricerca di qualche spot con potenziale (lagune e point breaks), usando instagram per cercare i consigli degli amici e guidando in direzione della Wild Coast, passando fra i breaks di Kwazulu Natal.

La mia destinazione finale? Umtamvuna River (il Border Post), dove il set up include un cable park, un blob, mini ramp, una wake boat, con due point breaks e lagune a soli 15 mins di distanza!

amici. Ma in questo viaggio, ho trovato molti spots veramente isolati, con nessuno in vista. Niente macchine, accesso alla spiaggia, umani o animali, solo io e il vento. In questo spot, un sandbar separava la laguna dall’oceano, circondato da banani e canne, con qualche albero abbattuto in acqua, una perfetta sessione, una delle migliori di questo viaggio, con nessuno a sentirmi gridare o ridere o imprecare quando sono finito su un banano. Le mie emozioni erano amplificate, come un bambino che prova una sport per la prima volta.

Il resto del viaggio è stato alla ricerca di onde - in quel periodo dell’anno il vento offshore rende possibile surfare delle 5 del mattino fino alle 11. Ogni spot migliore del precedente: senza muta, tubi infiniti (ed una sessione con delfini), uscire dall’acqua solo per mangiare qualche banana, un paradiso.

Ma Cape Town stava chiamando, dopo due settimane sconnesso dal mondo. L’inverno a Cape Town è diverso, difficilmente esco in kite, di solito surfo, bevo vino rosso, e faccio cose che di solito non ho tempo ti fare d’estate.

Mi piace, ma a volte mi prudono le mani...

Dopo un mese sono tornato a Cape Town, questa volta pronto ad imbarcarmi...Peccato che le mie tavole fossero destinate a rimanere a terra, niente spazio sul piccolo aereo da 37 posti, e stesso destino per quelle di Jordy Smith)... Arrivato in Namibia 24 ore più tardi, e dopo 4 viaggi da e verso l’aereoporto, avevo con me le tavole ad un’ora dal tramonto, non abbastanza per godersi quello che sembrava essere la giornata migliore del forecast.

kite per non farlo cadere e stare nel tubo. Garantito, difficilissimo stare nel tubo e ho visto solo Patri McLaughlin riuscirci in video in maniera decente.

Namibia? A parte il puzzo di foca, gli squali bianchi e le onde distruttive, è uno dei posti tubanti a sinistra migliori al mondo! 2 km di tubi su sabbia al ginocchio.

Pazzesco...

Quando pianifichi un viaggio, ci sono sempre rischi e ricompense. In questo caso per molti kiters si parlerebbe di fallimento: ho perso la giornata migliore, perso le tavole, dormito per terra, passato troppo tempo negli aereoporti invece che in acqua. Ma a volte non tutto va per il verso giusto, l’importante è sfruttare al massimo tutto quello che si riceve!

Più veloce, più duro e più basso del descrivibile, l’onda scende per 2km sui 25 nodi, quindi devi andare veramente veloce in acqua, con costanti loops al

Ho trovato vento abbastanza per una sessione, quindi mi sono buttato, preso un mucchio di onde(con la GoPro morta nel frattempo), e trovato la sessione del viaggio, che è valsa tutta la fatica ed il prezzo del biglietto...

When I got the call from NP to head to South Dakota to test out some of their wetsuits in extreme environments, all I knew about the place was that Mount Rushmore is nearby and something about Dances With Wolves. I didn’t know what to expect. I watched The Revenant on the plane, much of which was set in South Dakota, and this got me excited. But there didn’t seem to be a lot of water there!

I had heard about the wild nature and extreme conditions and, due to the warm winds coming up from Mexico and meeting the freezing Canadian fronts, the weather can be very fickle and change in a day.

But Dakota was unchartered territory for watersports. Time to chart it out.

DAY 1 - ARRIVAL After more than 20 hours of traveling I landed in Rapid City, the capital of South Dakota.

The airport was literally deserted apart from the passengers that arrived. No people, no security, no taxis. Even the free shuttle to town had gone home. After a few phone calls they promised to send one for us.

Even in northern Europe the days were warmer and nights balmy. Not on that day in Rapid City. It was 5 degrees Celsius and snowing.

Heavily.

The team gathered in the historic Alex Johnson hotel in Rapid City — a charming downtown building designed in German Tudor style and brimming with authentic Native American decor. Basically a lot of animal heads. The hotel is also apparently haunted — you can even book a Ghost Adventure Package stay. The team gathered at the bar for a pre-shoot brief and a beer or two. In the crew we had Antoine Martin, a pro windsurfer; Melissa Gill, a pro water woman from Costa Rica; Alex Zenovic from NP, photographer Christian Black, videographer Elliot Leboe and our local guide Dr. Bill Young. There was general concern (and excitement) about the weather forecast, and plans were made accordingly.

Day 2 The day started like the previous one finished — 5 degrees and snowing. We decided to head to the nearby Black Hills, but first we headed through the historic town of Deadwood. Yup, it’s not just an HBO series — it’s a real place. Wild Bill Hickok was allegedly shot in Deadwood at Saloon Number 10 while playing poker.

This place has an amazing collection of guns and animal heads. It’s stunning and a real piece of Midwest Americana. Moving on, we traveled up to Terry Peak — with all our water gear and armed with wetsuits. Terry Peak has an elevation of 2153m and was completely covered in snow when we arrived. The nearby ski slope was the perfect first test for the suits and to see how our boards work in snow. Always good to know. The suits kept us warm despite the chilly wind and fun was had by all.

On the way back, the beautiful winter scenery provided the perfect backdrop for some amazingly unusual photos. We refueled with some sausages at the Germanthemed Sled Haus before stopping off at Bill’s best friend’s amazing log house.

The place was like a museum — full of interesting trinkets, Native American artefacts, hunting rifles and the ubiquitous animal heads. No wind today but what an amazing adventure so far.

Day 3 The next day, it snowed. We headed to Pactola Lake to try our luck with the wind, despite the freezing temperatures. Pactola Lake is the largest reservoir in the Black Hills of South Dakota and is a product of the Pactola Dam. We were greeted by little wind but amazing vistas of the lake, bordered with snow-covered coniferous trees. After some SUPing to explore the lake, the wind picked up and I decided to try my luck with a foil. These things can go in nearly no wind but the few puffs weren’t even enough on the day. The warm wetsuit and booties kept most of the cold out but I couldn’t feel my hands after a minute in the water and my head felt as if I had just eaten three scoops of ice cream at once. Ouch. Elliot spotted a bald eagle and we chased it around the lake for a while to get his Nat Geo shot. Our daily burger fix was supplied by the healthily-titled Sugar Shack which supplies ‘the best burgers in the Hills’. A dubious statement but they did let me flip one or two… On our return to the hotel we explored the nearby ‘art alley’. Dakota didn’t stop surprising us as it suddenly felt like we were in a back alley of New York.

Day 4 More and more snow.

We headed back into the Hills to explore another lake. Antoine and Meli took to some paddle boarding while I tried to test my limits by seeing for how long I can kite naked. There wasn’t enough wind for this but we got some shots for good measure. Antoine even managed to surf down a snowy slope and into the water on his iSUP. We heard there might be more wind at the state’s biggest lake so we quickly packed our gear and took off — but not before stopping for another Sugar Shack grease refill.

As we drove south, the sky got darker but the wind was definitely picking up. When we arrived at Lake Angostura, it was howling. Angostura is actually a reservoir on the Cheyenne River, one of the bigger bodies of water in the area. I got my smallest FX kite and the Double Agent foil and jumped in as quickly as I could. Despite the moody skies the scenery was beautiful — and the water freezing. The good news was that the suits were working! We had a great session in 20-30 knot winds and nine degree water.

Day 5 Finally the weather started improving and there was wind on the horizon. On the way to our next destination, the beautiful Sylvan Lake, we stopped off to see Mount Rushmore, one of America’s most recognizable tourist spots. In glorious sunshine, we took in this magnificent monument and I got George Washington to wear an NP cap. The road to Sylvan took us via The Needles — eroded granite pillars, towers and spires that create an unforgettable landscape. We threaded through The Needles via a serpentine-like single lane road then, at Sylvan Lake, we got to explore the area on our SUPs. Sylvan is nestled in the hills of Custer State Park at an elevation of 1873m — so any wind that you get is pretty gusty. This time we were lucky and I managed to get going on a foil, after some freezing moments in the water. I think I was probably the first kiteboarder to kite on this pristine lake and it was an incredible experience. After Sylvan, we went home to pick up our camping gear and headed to the infamous Badlands for a night under the stars. But not before stopping for a drink at Bill’s friend’s amazing home — complete with an 1800s saloon bar.

Day 6 When we arrived at our Badlands camp site it was dark and we weren’t 100% sure where we were. At the break of dawn, we were struck by an unforgettable sight: an otherworldly, rocky landscape stretching as far as the eye can see.

Beautiful morning light bounced off the eroded sedimentary rock, generating a myriad of colors that warmed the crisp morning air. After spending a good hour taking photos and enjoying the view we set off for some kiting. On the way I spotted a milky-white pond created by water mixing with white Badlands sand and thought it would be amazing to kite it.

We had to stop a few hundred meters from the pond so I pumped up my kite and ran down the road with it — much to the amusement of passing truck drivers. The pond was so shallow I had to take my fins off and I had to jump over some barbed wire to get going – but the ride was wild…

It was time to go home. This place was incredible and a trip of a lifetime. We got to experience four seasons in one week, saw buffaloes, elks and other wildlife, took in the most incredible scenery, and got to kiteboard some amazing places: what more could you ask for.

SCILLY TIMES Committed UK kiter Ben Gillespie headed over to the UK’s southernmost archipelago, the Scilly Isles, in the hope of catching the last of the British summer sun with the aim of exploring the islands and taking the next step on his journey towards foiling super-stardom…

As if I’d just eased back on the throttle (I checked, I hadn’t) the 15hp engine on my tiny RIB slowed and then cut out, leaving me in absolute silence and alone a mile from land.

I gave the petrol tank a quick shake, eliminating the possibility that the problem was the only one I knew how to fix, and looked up to find myself a mile from land in every direction. Thus I discovered the reality of adventure kitesurfing, rocking less than gently in the solid swell coming from the Atlantic to the west, and headed slowly but surely towards the rocky shores of the Scillies.

Luckily, there were oars in the bottom of the boat, eight hours of daylight remaining, and only a light breeze to contend with. The swell caused me some concern and I briefly considered stripping naked, soaking my clothes in petrol and starting a signal fire but, in the interests of not compounding my embarrassment I thought I’d better stay dressed. Before I started rowing, I gave the starter rope a hopeful tug and, surprisingly, my somewhat frantic efforts brought it throbbing back to life. I put my t-shirt back on, and set my course to St Agnes with my fingers crossed.

As I did, I thought about the reason I’d come to the Scillies, and why I kept ending up in situations that bordered on the ridiculous. I decided we all started kitesurfing for different reasons. Some love cruising on a sunny day, feeling a connection with the ocean.

Some, especially in the UK, love the power, the

excitement, and feeling like you’re in a battle with the elements. Some just love learning something new. I am a fan of all of these factors but for me some of the best times I’ve had kitesurfing have been when it’s just an excuse to go and explore somewhere new with my mates. Which I guess is why, having visited St Martin’s (another of the five inhabited Scilly Isles) back in March, I’d decided to come back for a proper look around.

Having convinced a couple of friends, the guys at Moses Hydrofoils, and myself that the Scillies was loaded with potential, I spent three months emailing, calling, and otherwise pestering residents and (gratefully, I should note) found myself captain of a vessel approximately two meters long and one meter wide, with an apparently not entirely reliable 15hp outboard on the back. I knew we needed a boat to explore fully, because transport between the islands is expensive, and awkward enough that you can’t really visit more than one island a day. We’d had two other boats lined up but both fell through for various reasons (another reality of adventure kitesurfing) so we were delighted to accept this third offer from Leon, a local kitesurfer. Leon’s been on the Scillies for 10 years and kiting almost as long – for most of that time he’s used the boat he lent us to take himself wherever’s on, regardless of the weather. Hearing this conjured up epic visions of Leon crossing the main channel in 25 knots, climbing up mountains of white flecked ocean, then screaming down the other side, with kit flying around the boat.

He seemed pretty chilled about it, but having been out in that boat in 10 knots, I wouldn’t want to be out in much more. To be fair, he probably had a VHF radio…

THE SET UP

Just in case the perfect beaches come too close to convincing you you’re not in England anymore...

There are two things that make the Scillies so interesting from a kitesurfing perspective, the first is the number of islands and the network of sandbars between each, which offer great potential for flat water, and spots in any wind direction. In fact, on the lowest tide of the year it’s actually possible to walk (and wade, sometimes chest deep) between all five inhabited islands.

The second is the weather; it’s the warmest place in the UK, hence its dominant flower growing industry.

It is also fully exposed to wind from all directions, as evidenced by the multitude of hedges grown to provide shelter for those same flowers. Unbelievably, the forecast for our week there was, apart from one morning, for sub 10 knots every day which, as well as being sure to put my new foiling skills to the test, made navigating between the islands three deep in a motorized bath tub possible, if not easy.

THE HYDROFOIL I had a suspicion that it might even be possible to explore the islands by kite alone. I reached out to Moses Hydrofoils UK, who liked the sound of the project, and sent me a Fluente to test out. At the last minute Craig Sparkes from Flysurfer offered me the use of his 15m Sonic too, and I couldn’t resist.

I told a bunch of mates that I’d just take the hydrofoil to the island and figure it out when I got there, but fortunately they convinced me to invest some time in learning before I left. Oh man, such good advice. I don’t want to say it’s prohibitively difficult, because it’s not, but it is TERRIFYING, and what you really want to do is keep your eyes peeled for a 15 knot day, at a spot where you can get into neck deep water without too much effort.

With that, you’ll be up on the board easily.

With a bit of practice, you should be able to keep the board on the water while you get a bit of speed up, and then ollie the board onto the foil. Once you’re up, it’s just a case of staying calm as you accelerate to close to the speed of light, directly into the wind. Seriously though, once you’re on the foil for more than a few seconds everything starts to make sense, you’ll start to get used to applying front foot pressure, and going in basically any direction you choose is possible. You’ll crash often and harder than you might expect, but you’ll be staying upwind after your first run. I had two great 10-15 knot sessions before leaving for the Scillies which, with the wind forecast as it was, turned out to be really handy….

THE ISLANDS

No wind, no problem: showing the lo cals how to enter the water properly

Five inhabited islands make up the Scillies, along with just over 2000 people and a bunch of tourists. I already knew St Martin’s was great for flat water freestyle, so we kept that in the back pocket in case of strong winds from the south west. The north westerly isles of Tresco, Bryher, and the uninhabited Samson were those I was most keen to explore. Sandbars, and the mostly low lying Samson, looked hopeful to provide flat water heaven, and a deep channel between the islands looked likely to provide an opportunity to cover some distance in relative safety on the Fluente. Naturally, I left booking our campsite ‘til late in the day and ended up having to stay on St Agnes, the most remote and rockiest isle. On the upside, we had a great view from the tent, and a mooring at our disposal.

We restricted ourselves to exploring St Agnes for the first couple of days, scoring a lucky window of wind one morning and kiting the natural harbor on the west of the island, right by the campsite, before making an ill-fated attempt on the idyllic sandy bottomed bay between St Agnes and its smaller neighbor Gugh. While the majority of the island is pretty rocky, this bay offers stunning views with a handful of yachts moored in the deep water just meters offshore and, like much of the Scillies, incredibly clear blue water. A narrow causeway to the north means that the bay is exposed to wind from the N/NNW and the S/SSE, and can be ridden in both onshore and offshore conditions. It’s small, but it’s pretty cool, and the deep water means it has good potential for hydrofoiling as well as flat water freestyle. Unfortunately, the wind was too light to even keep a kite in the air by the time we got in the water here this time.

APPLE TREE BAY Our hopes were soon raised as there was a little wind forecast and it was in the right direction to light up a spot called Apple Tree Bay, on Tresco. At high tide, the spot here is about two meters deep for probably a square kilometer – ideal for practicing foiling.

The wind vanished after a couple of hours – it proved typical of the isles for weather to change a lot. I guess because it’s a small land mass, weather systems blow straight through rather than sticking around. We didn’t experience any strong wind this time, but from my last trip out I knew that you need to keep an eye on the horizon for squalls…

Having used up what we were confident was all the wind we were going to get, on Tuesday morning we set aside thoughts of kiting and set off to explore the Scillies’ largest uninhabited island, Samson. We’d glimpsed it on our trip the day before and, based on that and reports from various locals, knew it had potential. Unfortunately, on this particular day we had no options for transport other than the bathtub, so we decided to travel light and took only ourselves and Amy’s camera.

We arrived on the island two miles, and close to an hour, after we left St Agnes, in a sandy bottomed lagoon straight out of a Caribbean guide book. We immediately decided there was enough wind to ride the hydrofoil set up. After very little discussion, we decided the boat would go faster with just one of us in, and I set off back to St Agnes to collect the kit.

15 minutes later, I found myself in the situation I described at the beginning of this piece…

Having started the engine again, I grabbed all the kite gear, a load of food for lunch, and my phone, before hightailing it back to Samson. The engine held out, and I returned to Samson in a solid 10-12 knots; wind that would normally be a frustrating few knots shy of useful, but was now an excellent opportunity to test the light wind potential of foiling. There was a little careful exploration to avoid writing off expensive carbon gear, but there is actually plenty of space and the feeling of nipping between islands and exploring

is really satisfying. Once you’re away from the island, a trip to Apple Tree Bay only takes a couple of minutes, where you can foil to your heart’s content with no fear of underwater obstacles. Once I was a bit more confident, I started kiting downwind (which on this day meant heading north) to explore the channel. I made it as far as the harbor at New Grimsby (nicer than it sounds) and spent most of the afternoon kiting back and forth between the two islands. The wind coming up the channel was clean and the water was calm, with only the odd water taxi to share it with.

The next day we had what appeared to be much the same conditions, so Hugh and I returned to the same spot with the intention of getting some more pictures ourselves.

The wind was slightly lighter, which I thought might prevent any riding at all, but I was blown away by the performance of the Sonic/Fluente combo. I’ve never ridden anything similar, so the best indicator I can give is to say that the kite was struggling to stay in the air when I was stood on the beach.

This really was a good test of my ability, and after a few attempts I found that I could loop the kite, pump the board, and get on the foil. Once I was on the foil I was shooting upwind, grinning ear to ear. My problem came when I reached the end of my tack in deep water off Apple Tree Bay, and had to stop to turn. Obviously the kite fell out of the sky immediately. Luckily I could swim ashore, and repeat the same process to get back across the channel. I think I ended up doing about four pack downs that day, with Hugh doing a sweet job of rescuing me with the boat when I wasn’t near a beach.

After that, Hugh and I made the decision to get out of Dodge.

I considered myself super lucky to be able to tick off all five of the islands, and to have confirmed that there is indeed some sweet kitesurfing to be had. In future, I’d base myself on either Bryher or Tresco for best access to a variety of spots without having to catch a boat, or on St Martins, if I was happy to kite the flats there exclusively. I still think there’s a great adventure to be had getting round the outside of all the islands, but there is no doubt that “we’re going to need a bigger boat…”

Con quel suo fare rilassato tutto brasiliano, appare chiaro fin da subito che la vita stà trattando bene Alex. Ed oltre a questo, ottiene grandi risultati e spinge sempre al limite. Lo vedete in copertina, quindi abbiamo pensato fosse anche l’occasione giusta per farci due chiacchere...

Hey Alex, grazie per aver trovato il tempo di parlare con noi. Iniziamo da Cumbuco, Brasile, il tuo home spot e dove tutto è iniziato: quando hai visto le prime persone fare kitesurf ?

In realtà vengo da “Icarai”, a 8km a Sud di Cumbuco (anche se in realtà faccio sempre kite a Cumbuco). La prima volta che vidi un kite, ero davanti casa, dove di solito faccio surf, e c’erano alcuni ragazzi alle prese con un downwind e con alcune movenze che a suo tempo mi parvero incredibili.

E quando hai iniziato a fare kite?

Una volta sono andato a fare surf con alcuni amici che avevano già provato il kite, e si offrirono di insegnarmi viste le mie numerose richieste! Alla fine del 2007 ebbi la mia prima lezione, un feeling bellissimo, e da subito decisi di dedicare meno tempo al surf e più al kite, dove la progressione mi sembrava ben più rapida ed evidente.

Quando hai comprato i primi kite?

Nel 2008 da un ragazzo tedesco, Manfred, che ha una pousada in Cumbuco. Da questo momento era kite tutti i giorni, con gli altri ragazzi di Cumbuco, Eudazio da Silva, Set Teixeira ed altri nomi famosi nella scena pro di questi giorni – training nella famosa Cauipe Lagoon.

Ti ricordi la prima competizione ed il risultato?

Il primo evento è stato un evento local, con le categorie Junior e Pro. Il livello era alto in entrambe, ed i risultati non furono buoni, fino a che non ebbi il supporto di Luiz Carlos, una persona del posto, che mi permise di avere un kit decente. Senza risultati degni di nota nelle competizioni locali, andai ai Brazilian Juniors Nationals nel 2010, dove riuscii a diventare campione Junior!

Quando hai capito che potevi essere pro?

Quando entrai nella prima competizione internazionale a Cumbuco, una delle tappe KPWT. Arrivai sesto, ed inizia a fare piani per viaggiare in Europa e tentare le tappe europee. Un sogno che diventava realtà.

Quando hai iniziato il world tour?

Nel 2011 e 2012, solo alcune tappe, per poi farle tutte nel 2013 dopo essere diventato rider Best.

Quale è la tappa del tour che preferisci?

Sicuramente quella Brasiliana, anche se non è stata fatta di recente. Mi piace andare in Egitto e Venezuela, dove di solito si confrontano i migliori e dove le condizioni sono molto buone.

L’atmosfera è buona fra i riders, è sempre così?

Certo! Quando sei in competizione, cerche di concentrarti più su te stesso, ma quando si è fuori dall’acqua, ci si aiuta e ci si consiglia molto, sembra quasi di essere in una grande famiglia.

Ti piace il nuovo format del WKL? CI sono molti cambiamenti, ed in meglio, fatti in un brevissimo lasso di tempo. E’ la prima volta che noi riders appoggiamo in maniera uniforme un format per un evento. Eravamo scettici all’inizio, ma è bastato provarlo per convincerci della bontà di questo progetto – un evento può essere completato molto più in fretta, ed è molto più comprensibile per gli spettatori.

Che kit usi al momento?

L’Obsession Pro, con la Juice V3 per il freestyle, e la Religions per le waves. Un kit eccezionale.

Com’è il tuo contributo nella parte R&D? Ho lavorato per il momento con il resto del team prevalentemente sulla Juice, un buon risultato!

Hai navigato molto recentemente...

Sono stato invitato dal team di Surfin Sem Fim per un downwinder di 600km nella costa nord est del Brasile, attraversando 3 stati. Una delle più belle esperienza mai fatte da me su un kite. Ho visto un mucchio di posti selvaggi, posti bellissimi ed immacolati, e nessuno in acqua. E quest’anno l’ho fatto due volte! 600km come l’anno prima, ed un extra trip di 330km. A pezzi dopo oltre 900km in 3 settimane. Ma ne è valsa la pena!

Hai viaggiato molto. C’è un posto meglio di casa?

Onestamente – se l’ho visto, non me lo ricordo.

Menzionerei la durezza di Cape Town o le acque cristalline dell’Egitto.

F-ONE è un brand che non ha bisogno di presentazioni. Da sempre innovativi, e da sempre attenti al dettaglio. Al centro del progetto abbiamo Raphaël Salles, che è riuscito a fare di una passione un business...

Partiamo dall’inizio, prima di F-ONE, il tuo background nel windsurf...

Ho iniziato a fare windsurf quando avevo 13 anni, nel lontano 1976. Ho iniziato presto a competere, e sono stato pro dal 1980 al 1995. Il top della mia carriera è stato nel 1985, quando ho terminato la World Cup al terzo posto. A quel tempo facevamo waves, slalom e racing, quindi molto vario e difficile.

E cosa ti ha spinto ad iniziare con F-ONE? Ho iniziato F-ONE nel 1994 con tavole da windsurf, ero sicuro di poter offrire qualcosa di innovativo in quel mercato. Ma nel 1996 ho provato il kite per la prima volta, ed è stato amore a 100 | TheKiteMag

prima vista. La prima sfida, riuscire ad andare upwind. Iniziai la produzione di tavole nel 1997, ed eravamo gli unici sul mercato.

Puoi spiegarci la tecnologia e perchè quelle tavole erano buone per il kite?

Eravamo come detto l’unico brand in quegli anni, ed i miei lavori passati mi davano un buon background per cominciare. Il modello più popolare all’inizio fù il red 215, e la shape era un mix fra un surf ed una tavola wave da windsurf - per planare ed andare upwind.

Com’era produrre tavole e kite nei primi anni 2000 – veramente i pionieri del nostro sport!

All’inizio era veramente rivoluzionario, cambiavamo concetti e materiali ogni mese, ed era difficile rimanere al top, sopratutto considerando che ben presto molti altri brand sono entrati nel mercato.

L’inizio...

Poi nel 2008 un kite rivoluzionario – il Bandit. Ci puoi parlare di come sei arrivato a disegnare questo kite? E di come deve essere stato eccitante capire di star facendo qualcosa di innovativo!

Il Bandit arrivà con il brevetto per la Delta C-shape, ed è stato veramente un passo importante per noi, considerato anche che ci prefiggevamo di avere un unico modello nel range! Tutti gli altri brand avevano diversi modelli, ed onestamente molti pensavano fossimo pazzi, ma solo dopo 10 anni ci siamo decisi ad aggiungere dei kite. A quei tempi Naish presentava i concetti di Sigma e Bow, tempi rivoluzionari!

Lo scopo del Delta shape era di avere il massimo del depower, con la stabilità, il wind range, il relaunch e la maneggevolezza che volevamo in un kite.

Il Delta shape ci garantisce tutto questo.

Ti aspettavi questo successo?

E’ come un figlio - lo vedi bellissimo, quindi ero convinto sarebbe stato un successo. Grazie al Bandit, le nostre vendite sono raddoppiate in un anno, ed ancora oggi è probabilmente la più lunga storia di successo della storia del kite. E non è ancora finita.

Dal 2008 a oggi, il range F-ONE è aumentato, con twin tips e surf. Il Bandit è sempre il kite principale per tutte le discipline, avete mai considerato di aumentare il range?

Il Bandit è un kite sorprendente – i nostri migliori freestylers lo usano nel World Tour, ed i nostra wave riders lo usano nello Strapless and Wave Tour. Lo vendiamo anche a scuole e centri kite, ed è amato da studenti ed insegnanti. Adesso è il tempo del foil, quindi abbiamo bisogno di nuovi kite, con una trazione differente ed una differente performance, quindi abbiamo

aggiunto il Breeze. Ma è sempre il Bandit che porta il 90% delle nostre vendite.

Il vostro range delle tavole è molto buono – come lo scegliete e lo cambiate ogni anno?

Eravamo fabbricanti di tavole dall’inizio, quindi volevamo fin da subito avere il migliore range di tavole possibile. Ci piace ascoltare i nostri clienti e capire cosa va e cosa non va. Non possiamo ovviamente cambiare tutte le tavole ogni anno, quindi cerchiamo di lavorare su poche tavole alla volta.

Quale sono le più significanti evoluzioni parlando di costruzioni delle tavole e di materiali?

Partendo dalla fine degli anni novanta, facevamo già surf in EPS e PVC sandwich con carbonio, quindi la base della costruzione è rimansta la stessa, con l’aggiunta di nuove fibre o foam. Per le TheKiteMag | 101

Sempre l’inizio – qui si fa sul serio

twin tips, siamo stati il primo brand a farle come fossero snowboards, con un core in legno.

Avete un team di riders e testers che lavorano con voi da molti anni, ce ne puoi parlare?

Ci piace avere relazioni a lungo termine con i nostri partners, e lo stesso avviene per i nostri riders. Alcuni di loro continuano a collaborare con noi a carriera finita. Sicuramente oggi Mitu è il nostro rider di punta, dopo aver passato così tanto tempo con noi. Non è più un semplice rapport rider/brand, Mitu è la star del nostro sport, e ciò che porta allo strapless è unico. E’ anche un grande businessman, ed il suo centro a Capo

Verde è ora veramente grande, con 30 persone come staff al lavoro durante la stagione invernale. Abbiamo poi i nostri riders classici, come Alex Caizergues e Charlotte Consorti, ed alcune novità come David Tonijuan e Set Teixera. Abbiamo una nuova generazione in arrivo, e Mikaili Sol dal Brasile ne farà parte – a 12 anni il suo freestyle è impressionante. Il nostro team foil è grande, con il 10 volte campione del mondo Maxime Nocher e Axel Mazella è già sul podio a 19 anni.

Per il testing, Mika è mio partner da 10 anni e ci conosciamo così bene da poter essere super precisi ed efficienti.

La combinazione di tutti questi elementi è eccezionale in termini di immagine,

feedback e relazioni, come si vede nei nostri clips dove viaggiamo insieme.

Ed ora anche tuo figlio Julien a capo di Manera – pensi che i tuoi figli seguiranno i tuoi passi?

Julien ha terminato gli studi alla business school, e all’inizio preferivo che si facesse le ossa in altri lavori prima di collaborare con noi. Ma un giorno si è presentato convinto di partire dal business di famiglia, e la sua motivazione, capacità e competenza mi ha impressionato - da qui a diventare il brand manager di Manera il passo è stato breve. Manera è un nuovo brand, e pensiamo ci sia moltissimo spazio per crescere e creare qualcosa di speciale.

L’era moderna – Raph al lavoro

Sophie, mia moglie, è la persona chiave di F-ONE, e siamo entrambi molto orgoglioso di veder crescere i nostri figli in questo modo.

CI puoi parlare di Montpellier e di come funziona per voi il processo di R&D? Il nostro ufficio a Sud di Montpellier è a 10 minuti dal mare, abbiamo moltissime condizioni di vento, e molte di esse simili alle classiche condizioni che i nostri kiters hanno quando usano i nostri prodotti.

Passo più o meno 150 giorni in acqua con Mika, ed abbiamo uno staff di 20 persone in ufficio, mentre la produzione è in Asia.

Forse per F-ONE, la seconda rivoluzione (dopo il Bandit) è il foil. Ne hai capito subito le potenzialità?

Alcuni dei nostri riders ed ambasciatori hanno iniziato il foil nel 2008, io ho iniziato nel 2013 quando mi sono reso conto degli incredibili miglioramenti nel light wind. All’inizio il kit era veramente un problema, e non ero sicuro che sarebbe stato un successo. Ma ora è impensabile pensare ad un mondo del kitesurf senza foil, quando con venti a meno di 15 nodi un tempo non si usciva, ed ora sotti i 20 nodi è solo foil! E da Settembre, tutte le mie sessioni SUP diventano foil SUP.

Il 2017 è quindi l’anno dei foil, e avete introdotto un mucchio di foils per tutte le discipline (con due extra per questo gennaio). Una decisione importante, pensi che sarà un successo?

La mia filosofia è semplice: lo provo, se mi piace, lo facciamo! A volte mi sbaglio, ma fortunatamente non troppo spesso. La seconda cosa importante, è che quando facciamo qualcosa, lo facciamo dedicandoci tutto noi stessi. Il mercato francese, e specialmente quello del sud della Francia, è molto avanti nel mondo del foil, ed io personalmente, avendo iniziato 8 anni fa, penso di avere una buona idea di cosa possa succedere in futuro. Abbiamo iniziato a lavorare in un range di foils 4 anni fa, quindi non stiamo

sicuramente improvvisando, siamo stati fortunati che effettivamente il foil sta avendo successo, e alla grande, in tutte le discipline.

E su cosa stai lavorando al momento?

Altre sorprese in serbo per i prossimi mesi?

Al momento la grossa sorpresa è il foil.

E che aumenteremo il nostro budget per team riders e freestyle.

Se fossi stato in grado 20 anni fa di vedere F-ONE oggi, cosa avresti pensato?

Sarebbe stato pazzesco, forse un filo spaventoso, considerando dove siamo ora e pensando che abbiamo inziato 20 anni fa solo io e mia moglie Sophie, con un investimento di 7000€. Oggi siamo un marchio importante nel mondo del kitesurf, in una posizione che amiamo e che ci soddisfa. Essere troppo grandi potrebbe limitare la nostra libertà, forse è meglio così.

IL DESIGNER

Per molti anni CORE ha prodotto solo due kite, il GTS e l’XR. Entrambi grandi successi e molto popolari ed apprezzati.

Negli ultimi 18 mesi tuttavia, sull’isola tedesca di Fehmarn, il quartier generale di Core, qualcosa ha iniziato a muoversi.

3 nuovi kite a praticamente raddoppiare il range CORE. Ne parliamo con il kite designer di CORE, Frank Ilfrich…

Partiamo dall’inizio: qual’è il tuo background e xome sei arrivato a disegnare per CORE? Ho iniziato a fare kite nel 1999, uno dei primi, ed a livello scolastico sono un esperto di meccanica, oltre che graphic designer per videogiochi. Ho anche lavorato per riviste tedesche di kite, occupandomi del testing iniziando con le tavole Carved nel 2004/2005. A questo punto Barnie (il CEO di CORE) mi ha chiesto se volevo collaborare con il suo brand, ed ho accettato.

All’inizio ero il responsaibile della barra, quindi le prime barre

– la Carved bar e la ESP bar, erano fondamentalmente mie creature. Lavoravo anche a stretto contatto con il kite designer di allora. Dopo due anni ho preso il suo posto, ed eccomi nel 2005 ad avere la stessa posizione che ho anche adesso. E che adoro. Sono partito da niente (il vecchio designer si era portato dietro tutti i files), ma non era un problema, con l’uscita del Bandit era ora anche per noi di cambiare.

Deve essere stato un periodo fantastico per essere un designer – così tante novità in un periodo così breve. E’ lo stesso anche adesso?

Sì, è sempre bellissimo. Il kite design è nel periodo della maturità, continuiamo ad innovare e a costruire kite speciale.

E’ ovviamente difficile, ma dà molte soddisfazione. Sono soddisfatto del mio lavoro se i kite CORE sono i primi ad andare in aria e gli ultimi ad atterrare.

Sì, è lavoro anche questo...

Ok, parliamo dei vari modelli. CORE è famoso per avere kite all-rounder – adesso però ci sono 5 modelli.

Come sai cosa vogliono i tuoi clienti e come prendete le decisioni?

Fondamentalmente ci sono stati due eventi. Anzitutto abbiamo riempito un buco nella nostra Universal Series. Ed in secondo luogo, abbiamo cercato di fare kite altamente specializzati.

Ascoltiamo moltissimo il feedback dei loro clienti, e tutti gli aggiornamenti ai modelli devono essere vicini all’originale per non snaturarlo, ma essere innovativi per attirare nuovi kiters. E’ questa la vera sfida.

E’ bello vedere i nostri clienti aumentare in numero e migliorare con noi.

Ognuno dei kite della nostra Universal Series di allrounders ha una sorta di “super potere”.

L’ XR è il performante freeride. Il GTS è il freestyle. Il nuovo Free, si posiziona fra i due, con il wave riding in mente.

Quindi abbiamo lanciato la Specialized Series, per soddisfare quei riders esperti che fanno o solo onde o solo freestyle. Per questi, il nuovo Section compromette la caratteristica all-rounder per il wave riding, mentre l’impact fa lo stesso ma per il wakestyle.

Quindi quando è ora di ridisegnare un kite, come procedi?

Molte cose possono essere cambiate utilizzando diversi approcci; in generale l’aspect ratio è un aspetto fondamentale per un kite, ed ha l’impatto maggiore sulla performance. Stesso discorso per la curvatura delle wing tips, per gli struts, per il diamentro del LE e per le bridles. Il tutto stà nel trovare la combinazione corretta di tutti questi elementi. Senza contare che per un kite lightwind, le regole cambiano completamente!

THE DESIGNER

Quanto è imporante il software per il design? Fa tutto da solo?

Assolutamente no, non può fare calcoli strutturali o fare simulazioni di volo. Il design inizia e finisce con me, il software offre delle componenti e dei settaggi che sono sicuramente utili a supportare il mio lavoro, ma è praticamente impossile simulare al computer il volo di un kite, siamo ancora in una fase di creazione e test di prototipi.

Se gli altri designers hanno lo stesso software, si creano prodotti simili?

Non direi, il nostro software è customizzato secondo le nostre personali esigenze. E’ molto difficile replicare gli stessi settaggi ed inputs che abbiamo sviluppato negli anni. Il software è molto robusto e complesso, e può essere usato con un numero di permutazioni pressochè infinito.

Come altri kite influenzano le vostre scelte di design?

Ogni designer ha la sua personalità, è normale provare i kite fatti da altri, e ci aspettiamo che gli altri facciano lo stesso con i nostri kite. Detto questo, per noi è fondamentale che ogni nostro kite abbia un distinto feeling CORE, ed è importante per me sapere che i miei design sono unici.

Alcune shape hanno una funzionalità standard e ben definita, quindi a volte non posso spaziare eccessivamente con la fantasia. Ma quest non toglie che lo spazio per la creatività sia molto ampio, oltre al fatto che posso fare un kite per un mercato emergente, come abbiamo fatto 8 anni fa quando abbiamo creato il GTS, una macchina per il freestyle e per i kitelook. Il GTS divenne in breve tempo un best seller. E la stessa cosa è fondamentalmente avvenuta per l’XR, abbiamo fatto un kite con un occhio speciale per i salti e per il freeride, con un super range, ed il mercato ha risposto alla grande!

Puoi parlarci dei prototipi?

Abbiamo un ciclo produttivo di due anni, ci prendiamo il nostro tempo per essere sicuri di avere un prodotto perfettamente a posto. All’inizio partiamo da molti concetti, fino a che ci focalizziamo su quello che sembra il migliore. Quindi iniziamo a produrre prototipi, che arrivano al quartier generale fra i 9 ed i 12 giorni. E qui inizia il bello – proviamo i prototipi e capiamo cosa funziona (e cosa dovremo implementare) e cosa no.

Chi prova i prototipi?

Abbiamo un gran bel team di testers. I prototipi arrivano a Basti (Buzzy) Witzleben ed a me, li portiamo poi in giro per il mondo e Bernie, il nostro CEO, viene coinvolto in tutte le fasi dello sviluppo. Aiuta il fatto di avere il kite spot per i test letteralmente davanti casa.

Quindi per il feedback, ci affidiamo ai nostri clienti.

Chi ha l’ultima parola?

Ogni membro ha un ruolo importante - potrei essere io diciamo l’allenatore, visto che alla fine prendo io le decisioni finali, ma ogni parte del team porta il suo insostituibile contributo.

CORE è ben noto per innovare nei materiali, con il CoreTex, ExoTex, linee in Tectanium, e la barra Sensor 2S – pensi che ci saranno kite totalmente nuovi e materiali diversi in futuro?

Dopo 20 anni di evoluzione, dubito ci saranno dei cambi radicali. Prendiamo ad esempio la nostra linea di produzioni, abbiamo 5 kite con ognuno un target ben definito. L’XR e l’Impact hanno poco in comune, ma usano la stessa barra e sono entrambi, e senza ombra di dubbio, kite CORE. L’aereodinamica e la idrodinamica si applica ad entrambi, niente ci vieta di provare cose nuove, ma non sarà facile battere i vecchi design...

E parlado di design, ci saranno nel futuro altre rivoluzioni come il bow kite o il delta?

Continuiamo a pensare a concetti out of the box. Poi vederli all’opera è tutto un altro discorso. Penso ci sia però ampio margine per migliorare ed innovare...

Il KGB è uno dei miei trick preferita. E’ stato uno degli ultimi mobe che ho imparato, ed è ora uno di quelli che mi riesce meglio. Fuori dal kicker mi piace farlo con un Mexiroll, come nel wake. Se l’uscita è buona, è molto semplice ruotare in paragone agli altri mobe.

NAISH SLASH Per un brand posizionato nel centro wave del mondo del kite, era forse finalmente giunto il momento che Naish si dedicasse al mondo pure wave.

Il kite designer Damien Girardin ce ne parla.

Quindi tutto nuovo per lo Slash 2017? Perchè avete pensato fosse giunta l’ora di un kite dedicato alle onde?

Abbiamo passato alcuni anni pensandoci, ma eravamo convinti che il Pivot fosse la risposta. Parlando però con alcuni distributori, abbiamo capito che alcuni kiters erano alla ricerca di qualcosa di diverso per le onde e la parte strapless.

Qualcosa di ancora più stabile, un kite di cui ci si può dimenticare quando si è sull’onda o si chiude un trick, con un drift più che eccellente.

Quindi quali erano le qualità che volevi implementare nel tuo design?

Volevo qualcosa che avesse un drift perfetto, e più stabile, ma con una barra molto leggera, più leggera del Pivot.

Quali sono gli aspetti del design più interessanti?

Lo Slash parte dal Pivot, quindi ho preso il meglio dal Pivot e li ho aggiunti a quello che avevo in mente.

Per aver più stabilità, ho lavorato il Leading Edge per rendere il diametro più costante su tutto il kite, il che dà solidità e stabilità in generale. Per il drift, l’idea era di avere un kite che volasse un po dentro la wind window quando in depower. Il LE un filo più grande già aiutava, ma ho anche cambiato il design delle wing tips, per rendere più corte in altezza ma più lunghe. Questi cambiamenti iniziavano ad essere più radicali, con evidenti cambi all’angolo di attacco del vento quando in depower, ed effettivamente l’effetto sul drift era evidente!

Okay, parliamo di materiali, il Quad-Tex... Cosa ci puoi dire, sopratutto a riguardo di performance e durabilità di un kite?

Il Quad-Tex è qualcosa di eccezionale, il primo obbiettivo era aumentare la rigidità e la longevità del canopy. L’approccio però non è stato di aggiungere ripstops, ma ho fatto un materiale di ripstops (tipicamente 3 volte più duro), e quindi aggiunto il materiale classico a questa matrice, per creare il materiale finale.

Aumentare la rigidità del canopy rende il tuo kite più veloce e divertente da muovere. Quel feeling più diretto è forse la caratteristica che risalta di più quando si prova un kite con il Quad-Tex. E come conseguenza, abbiamo anche avuto per le mani un materiale più durevole.

In definitiva, il nostro processo di testing di 3 anni ha portato alla conclusione che il Quad-Tex sia il materiale di usare sotto tutti i punti di vista.

Dalla nostra esperienza di testing, alcuni sono molto buoni in condizioni down the line, ma meno in condizioni onshore, e viceversa. Come si posiziona lo Slash?

Lavorando con lo Slash, ho provato diversi wave kite, e mi sono effettivamente accorto di questo problema. Ho cercato di ovviarlo con lo Slash, e siamo fortunati qui a Maui ad avere fondamentalmente tutte le condizioni di cui si possa aver bisogno per testare a fondo un kite. Il vento può essere anche parecchi rafficato, in maniera simile ad altri kite spot. Ho anche provato alcuni prototipi a Cape Town, che offre a sua volta condizioni molto diverse da Maui. Il risultato finale è un kite veramente ben performante in ogni condizione!

Ed un mucchio di riders sono ora appassionati dello strapless, come si comporta lo Slash?

Ci ho pensanto molto, visto che personalmente esco molto strapless. Fortunatamente ho avuto un eccellente feedback dai riders, specialmente Kai Lanny, che adora lo Slash per i tricks strapless, grazie alla sua stabilità e previdibilità in aria.

Devo anche aggiungere che, come tutti i nostri altri kite, lo Slash ha un mucchio di depower, quindi saltare strapless permette di evitare di essere troppo trascinati dal kite (come avviene con altri kites da me testati).

E parlando dell’altra estremità, la barra, con un nuovo Torque system. Ce ne puoi parlare?

La caratteristica chiave del Torque system è il nuovo quick release che non solo ha passato la rigida normativa francese AFNOR, ma è anche super semplice da resettare. E’ un quick release semplificato anche nel power/depower, e nell untwise delle front lines.

Quindi possiamo dire: non si stà con le mani in mano a Naish in questo periodo. Novità per il prosieguo dell’anno?

3 anni per il Quad-Tex, 2 anni per il Torque ed un anno per lo Slash. Onestamente il Quad-Tex è veramente innovativo, ci abbiamo messo 3 anni!

This issue Tony strays a little away from Meteorology and takes a look at the effect that the weather can have on our bodies…

So, I thought it might be interesting to have a quick look at what happens to your body when you get cold in the water.

In this, the first part, I’ll have a look at how the body tries to defend itself against the cold, and why the mechanisms it has evolved are more of a hindrance than a help.

I spent the first few winters of my surfing life on the south coast of England. Not the coldest water in the world by any means, but the temperature was certainly a major factor.

In the winter, the main reason you would get out of the water was not that you were tired or bored, but that you were just too cold to carry on. I remember always having numb hands and feet, and sometimes coming out of the water violently shivering.

The human body, just like a machine, is designed to function within a certain temperature range. If the working ‘core’ of the machine becomes too cold, it will not function properly. So it has built-in control mechanisms to keep it at the right temperature, despite the outside being colder.

For example, in cold conditions, a car engine works harder and burns more fuel, and the water is circulated straight back to the core instead of being pumped to the radiator where the outside air would cool it down. In a human body, the metabolic rate is increased to generate more heat, and the blood is circulated back to the vital organs instead of pumped to the hands and feet.

When we start to get cold, we shiver. When we shiver, large groups of muscles produce random contractions exclusively to produce heat. In this way, extra heat energy is available to avoid your core temperature going down. In other words,

the extra heat is used to ‘combat’ the cold. You’d be surprised how much energy is used by shivering. Research has shown that violent shivering is able to increase our base metabolic rate by around 400 per cent – equivalent to a brisk walk or a slow bike ride.

Shivering comes in various different stages. First, you get a barely perceivable tightening of the muscles, called ‘preshivering’. Then, shortly afterwards, come the familiar short, rapid movements such as chattering of the teeth. These movements get larger and larger until you enter a state of uncontrolled violent shaking, where you find it difficult to see properly and difficult to talk. If you get to this stage in the water, your coordination will not be very good.

Crucially, you’ll still be getting colder and colder – a sign that more serious things could happen if you don’t get out as soon as possible; but also a clear indication that the shivering is not doing its job.

In addition to shivering, when we get cold our hands and feet go numb. The numbness is due to the blood vessels in our hands and feet contracting, restricting the blood supply: a process called cold-induced vasoconstriction. In normal circumstances, where our core temperature is slightly above the outside temperature, the core is prevented from overheating by pumping warm blood to our extremities, where

it cools before being pumped back. In colder conditions, the blood is short-circuited away from the extremities straight back to the inner core, so the vital organs stay warm. As a result, the extremities, which are not receiving warm blood, cool down a lot more than they normally would. Hence numb hands and feet. You could say that the mechanism has evolved to sacrifice the hands and feet to save the vital organs.

Unfortunately, cold-induced vasoconstriction isn’t a very efficient process either. It comes into action far too soon, way before our vital organs are put in any significant danger.

Our hands and feet go numb at relatively high temperatures, and the negative side-effects usually outweigh the decreased danger to our vital organs.

So, it seems that the two major processes that we have evolved to keep us warm – shivering and vasoconstriction – don’t work properly. The reason why they don’t work very well is because they evolved when we were still living on the plains of Africa. As a species, we haven’t been living away from that environment for long enough, so, unlike other mammals that have lived a long time in cold climates, we simply haven’t had time to evolve efficient mechanisms for keeping the cold out. In fact, the major reason why we are able to live in cold climates is because our brains have become clever enough to invent warm clothes and central heating.

Da amante degli sport acquatici, Bruno voleva rendere il waterskiing più accessibile al grande pubblico – fra il 1960 ed il 1969 si dedicò a brevetti per costruire qualcosa che potesse avere propulsione in acqua, e terminò costruendo il primo prototipo di cable park, un sistema a 5 tiranti (un 5.0 come si dice in gergo). 50 anni dopo, ci sono al mondo 265 parchi con un Rixen cable park, 45 nazione, 6 continuenti, senza contare i semplici 2.0 che sono più economici e semplici da costruire.

E' anche possibile avere un set up temporaneo per eventi in posti pubblici, come fanno in Germania per il Wake The Line event in piscine olimpiche.

Il cavo ricorda l'unhook e fare un downwind seguendo il tuo kite – imparare a seguire la forza motrice mantenendo tensione nelle linee / cavo è una pratica chiave in entrambe le discipline.

Se vieni dallo snowboard, sarai già in grado di usare entrambi i lati della tavola, ma sul kite si ha la tendenza ad usare un solo lato - meglio usarli tutti e due, considerando quanti soldi ci è costata!

IMPARARE NUOVE SKILLS Quindi si può portare qualcosa di nuovo nel kite, ma cosa esattamente? E qui viene il bello. Anzitutto non devi avere sottomano un forecast: .basta che non ci sia una tempesta, ed il cable è aperto. Una bella novità per noi amanti di Windguru.

All'inizio inoltre puoi essere terrificato da sliders e kickers, ma basta farsi coraggio e provare, e la tua vita cambierà: non è assolutamente così difficile come sembra, e da questo punto in poi la progressione è garantita.

ED I BOOTS? Abbiamo iniziato il cable più o meno un anno fa, e ancora trovo cose da imparare nel 90% delle sessioni, cose nuove da provare, magari qualcosa di piccolo, ma sono soddisfazioni. E questo ti spingerà a provare nuove cose anche con il kite.

Senza paura, ben presto passerai ai boots, sopratutto quando inizierai a salire sulle varie features, e ti abituerai ben presto, il tutto in totale sicurezza. Poi, se vuoi, puoi passare ai boots anche con il kite.

Ovviamente se un edge affonda, pagherai le conseguenze, ma a differenza del kite, il cavo è semplice da abbandonare.

SOCIAL EXHAUSTION

Ne parliamo sempre, ma una cosa che sicuramente manca nel kite è la creatività. I riders che vanno alla grande nel cable park hanno di solito uno stile più unico, sia con che senza moduli. Non ci sono limiti, e bisogna cercare in acqua di esprimersi liberamente sviluppando un proprio modo di navigare.

Essere stanchissima ma socievole è semplice nel cable park. Ognuno guarda gli altri in acqua, puoi anche prendere lo stesso cavo con un amico/a se vuoi. Per quanto riguarda la stanchezza, basta provare un'ora al park per capire cosa intendo: la stanchezza ti porta a rilassarti e parlare con gli altri, scambiarsi consigli e creando amicizie. Nel kite, la maggior parte delle interazioni è dovuto alla dipendenza – lanciare, atterrare, hai bisogno di qualcuno per queste azioni. Nel cable non hai bisogno di nessuno, solo la voglia di confrontarti e di mostrare chi sei!

Non devi essere come gli altri, come navighi deve essere un riflesso di te stessa.

Anche la muscolatura vuole la sua parte, sopratutto la parte alta del corpo, muscoli che non pensavi di avere: è uno sport veramente fisico, specialmente all'inizio, quindi un extra work out che non potrà che farti piacere.

BEHIND THE CLIP

Melancholy Noè Font è un talento. E’ passato dal freestyle al park senza troppi problemi, ed ora fa parte di una generazione di riders che stà dando del filo da torcere alla vecchia guarda... Oltre a questo, è anche molto creativo, e i suoi video ci piacciono molto. La sua ultima clip è veramente bella e speciale, con un tono fiabesco che ci ha piacevolmente sorpreso.

Nella bio del film dici: “Questo progetto è stato il più difficile”. Come è possibile?

Se hai mai visto dove è posizionata Hood River sulla mappa, sai che è lontano dalla costa e circondato da montagne.

Non è il più classico dei kite spot, ed a volte lo si dimentica. La direzione del vento deve essere perfetta, e questo a volte non succede. In due settimane per il filming, abbiamo avuto sempre vento, ma sempre rafficato e in arrivo dalle montagne. Non facile, ci voleva la giusta raffica per fare quello che volevamo fare, e abbiamo passato molte tempo provando e riprovando: frustrante a volte, nonostante l’ottimismo perenne del nostro team.

Come è stato lavorare con Vince?

Quanto sei stato a Hood River quest’anno?

Hahaha, Vince è un grande! E’ una continua motivazione per fare meglio, non solo è bravissimo dietro l’obbiettivo, ma è anche divertente ed un buon amico. Ed ha sempre nuove idee, in maniera molto naturale ci tiriamo su a vicenda.

Mi hanno parlato così tanto di questo posto che ho finito per passarci 6 settimane. La mia prima volta, ed è stato un successo.

Sai che cosa ha usato per filmare?

Io ho una Sony FS5, e Vince ha usato quella. Un drone e un a6300 con un case per l’acqua.

Quale è stato il tuo ostacolo preferito?

Il nuovo Cabrinha rail sembra farla da padrone...

Siamo ad un punto nella progressione dello stile del park, che per cambiare e fare cose nuove ci vogliono nuove features. Molti brands fortunatamente sembrano aver capito questo concetto, ed il Cabrinha rail è stato sicuramente una parte importante del nostro film, con 3 linee differenti, transfers, il muro e lo step up ledge. Il mio setup preferito però è il Session Kicker verso il Cabrinha Rail. Dal kicker al muro, pazzesco.

Qundi vuoi dedicarti al park – stai raggiungendo il livello dei migliori?

E’ tutto bello e nuovo per me: un mucchio di riders, stili diversi, nuovi tricks e nuove sfide. Il park è molto diverso dal freestyle, puoi fare tantissimi tricks diversi su una stessa feature, e questo da molto spazio alla creatività. Vedi quello che c’è attorno a te e quello che viene fatto attorno a te, e ciò è fonte d’ispirazione. Questo è il motivo per cui penso di essere così attratto dal park in questo momento. Non ci sono limiti, e si può variare molto nella stessa sessione di allenamento. Ogni giorno in un park è un giorno nuovo. Sono molto contento dei miei progressi dall’anno passato, dal mio evento nelle Filippine ad oggi ho imparato nuovi tricks praticamente in ogni sessione, e sono attualmente terzo nel raking della Kite Park League.

Le vibrazioni nella scena park sembrano ottime– è vero?

Siamo sempre in competizione, durante gli eventi e gli allenamenti, ma siamo semplicemente un gruppo di amici che adorano il park ed il kite. Progrediamo insieme, continuamente, e anche la vecchia scuola sembra come se ci stesse aspettando.

Stiamo arrivando, io e ragazzi come Ewan, Alex e Annelous.

Quindi il team è importante?

Fondamentale! A meno che tu non viva a Hood River, non puoi andare nel park, sei dipendente dai tuoi amici per spostarti ed uscire in acqua.

Abbiamo cercato di capire che sia The Cluster... E’ un segreto?

Non c’è una definizione chiara ancora. Il tempo ci aiuterà a dargli un’identità. Per il momento è il mio alter ego.

C’è una bella narrazione all’inizio e alla fine della clip, con Merel Summerhill. Dove avete preso le parole?

Nel numero 14, abbiamo parlato di Gorge.

Cosa significa quel posto per te?

Hoor River è un posto unico. Il panorama, la gente, la cultura, e l’unico kite park pubblico al mondo, e potrei continuare. Gli ultimi giorni sono passati molto velocemente, e non ho avuto esattamente quello che volevo, con il tempo che ci stuzzicava e sembrava prenderci in giro a volte. Sono ripartito da Hood River con la convinzione che dovrò tornare, e presto, per terminare quello che penso di non aver ancora finito.

Il mood era differente, il fiume, la montagna, gli alberi, tutto sembrava come in una favola. Ne ho quindi scritta una, non ero sicuro del risultato fino a che non ho chiesto a Merel di raccontarla per me.

E’ un video di 5 minuti - quante ore in acqua e di editing ci sono volute?

Non voglio saperlo, probabilmente non meno di 250-300 ore!

get rad with pretty much the same basic kit of a few kites and a couple of boards. Thus this lack of diversity among kiters surprised me. When I started kiting I knew I wanted to ride waves but when I came across wakestyle on YouTube I knew that would be my second love, and I made it my mission to get my buddies doing it too – I would become the local wakestyle proselytizer.

Ned: Despite being a kiter since 2007 and working for Ocean Rodeo since 2012, I’ve never had any interest in unhooked riding. Wakestyle is for wakeboarders, kids, and people who don’t care about their knees (right?!). Everyone knows the worst wipeouts come from unhooked trick attempts...

Like most of us, I was drawn to kiteboarding by the apparent freedom, big airs, and soft landings. Add some strapless, and I’ve still got loads of room to progress nearly 10 years in. Why would I ever unhook? I’m too old and smart for that now!

Tony: Nobody here on Vancouver Island was really riding wakestyle, so I had the internet teach me. Every time you pull that bar all the way in it seemed a long way from how simple those tutorials made things look back

home… “Oh crap how is this going to work!

My arms are getting yanked out! I’m going to eat it so hard!”. It was full on 7m conditions the day I finally committed to really go for that first unhooked Railey attempt in Paracas, Peru; not exactly ideal learning conditions but what did I know (I don’t think the internet tutorials really emphasized enough how preferable 12-14m days are for learning).

That was an enlightening day…

Ned: It’s interesting to take a step back and really look at wakestyle riding.

Why are (relatively) few kiters doing it? Why do so many of us shy away from it?

I think there are a few things at play here.

The exposure on the discipline is largely at the ‘pro’ level in magazines and videos. Landings are hard, and it seems like half the pros are all wearing knee braces. You only see teenagers or 20-somethings try this stuff, the tricks happen so fast, and for the average kiter (let alone new spectator) the difference between a Back Mobe and a KGB is… well, they don’t even know, and that’s just it! Conversely everyone can quickly grasp a big air with a tail grab, and those look pretty cool too.

It’s a steep learning curve...

As editor of TheKiteMag I’m not a teenager anymore and I’m pretty sure that I know my limits on a kiteboard. But do I? Or have I just allowed myself to believe that I’ve plateaued so I can take it easy?

Deep down maybe those reasons you give for not really pushing hard and going for new moves are actually excuses. And maybe it’s the same for you, maybe you have got more in you… Maybe you’re not too old to get your (donkey) dick out and see where things end up. So went a conversation between competent wakestyler Tony Litke, and ‘definitely plateaued’ Ned DeBeck one night. And so the next day, the #brostyle game was on…

Tony: Have you ever noticed how once someone starts kiting they quickly discover their niche in the sport, be it twin tipped big floaty airs, strapless flickety tricks or down the line waves and often never really expand their horizons beyond that?

So I guess I wasn’t that surprised to discover that all my kiting buddies, some who had been kiting for 10 years more than I, had never pulled their (donkey) dick out and tried unhooking. Coming from windsurfing one of the biggest advantages I saw in kiting was its versatility. From 12 knots to 40 knots and from flat water to heavy waves, you can

Ned nails it

with Tony being such a bro, we called his unhooked sessions #brostyle.

Tony: After months of incessant badgering to get my buddies on the wakestyle (now #brostyle) train it all came to a head after plenty of beers around a Nitinat campfire in mid-July. Five boozed-up and overconfident unhooked virgins dropped the hammer and committed to make tomorrow the day they pulled their (donkey) dicks out. Morning came, the thermal wind kicked in and there were some nerves amongst the candidates for sure with at least a couple trying to make a solid effort to bail out. Unlucky for them I wasn’t letting them get away that easily though and after some “positive reinforcement” the guys were pumping up, sourcing longer kite leashes, putting their safety systems in suicide mode and asking questions about what exactly they were about to attempt. Because there is no internet at Nitinat, it’s not like they could do any of their own research.

Ned: After all the trash talk, we had no choice but to suit up, venture into the unknown, and pop those unhooked cherries. How hard

can it be? Just pop the donkey dick (I like chicken finger), ride downwind, and then just go for it right? Well… maybe not so much.

Our attempts were anything from pitiful to scary and everything in between. I think I tried to unhook 3-4 times before realizing I had to really ride downwind, not just ‘less upwind’. Others reverted to the ‘never ever ever let go of the bar’ mentality, and half of us sent it like we were trying to boost moonshot 40 footers – not the greatest for Ralieys.

One thing that quickly became apparent to all of us though: this was actually pretty fun.

Tony: This was probably the funniest thing I have ever seen in eight years of windsports.

Kiting is inherently individual, and unlike other boardsports, you kind of want to stay the hell away from everyone else. It’s rare to get that jam-session mentality going where a group of your bros are all trying new moves for the first time, destroying themselves, and egging each other on to keep trying.

The boys were all just killing themselves, sending it hard, eating it, recovering and then cruising back and forth on the lake giving the “look my (donkey) dick is out” gesture to everyone they knew cruising by.

Zipline anyone?

Surprisingly, a couple of them even threw down some pretty legitimate Raileys...

Ned: A few half decent attempts, a lot of crashes, and some minor cuts and bruises later we reconvened with massive grins and beers. Needless to say, there were a lot of laughs, excessive hand talking with kite bar motions, and continued trash talk. Everyone agreed that this was something that needed to happen again on a regular basis. This time it was the Railey, next time something else.

The unhooked cherries were popped and we were already looking forward to the next team #brostyle session.

Tony: This isn’t a pro story, none of us are expecting to throw down Double Back Mobes anytime soon. We are just a bunch of guys in our 30s who discovered a fun way to push ourselves, try something new and having a stupid amount of fun doing it.

So the next time you are at the beach and you find yourself stagnating and bored with the same old tricks you’ve been doing for a while, rally some buddies, reach down, take your dick out and go for it. You’ll be better for it.

Just maybe wait for a 12m day…
