We are proud to report 100% participation in The Kiski Fund from our Board of Trustees, for a total of $133,102 in unrestricted donations to our annual fund.
Thank You Dear Friends:
M
Many people don’t know that Kiski was founded and originally incorporated as a for-profit entity. The school operated this way for some 60 years, managed by members of the Wilson, Marks, and Daub families. In the late 1940s, Kiski was re-incorporated as a not-for-profit. With that status came the ability to engage in fundraising activities. In 1952, the school’s first-ever annual giving drive raised $3,257. Fast-forward 65 years to the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017. We are pleased to report that our most recent annual giving effort – now called The Kiski Fund – raised $543,707. That’s 5% over our budgeted goal. Including campaign contributions, restricted donations, and gifts-in-kind, total giving to the school for 2016–17 was nearly $1.8 million. We’ve come a long way – all thanks to your generosity and ongoing sponsorship! We are proud to present this Annual Giving Report since it provides an opportunity to formally celebrate the alumni, past and present parents, faculty and staff, and other friends of Kiski who nurture and sustain our mission: to prepare young men for college and for life. That fundamental charge is more vital in today’s world than ever before. Your steadfast support will allow us to keep Kiski on a positive trajectory as we continue to provide the boys in our care with an unrivaled educational experience.
Our current capital campaign, Leadership for the 21st Century, has far exceeded our expectations. We expect to conclude the campaign at Reunion Weekend 2018 and anticipate that the total funds raised will exceed $31 million. The Ross Athletic Center, a new track and turf field, and renovations and additions to three dormitories have all been made possible through capital contributions. The remaining campaign projects include the construction of new faculty homes, the renovation of the dining hall, upgrades to our existing chemistry and biology labs, and the centerpiece of the final phase, the conversion of Kalnow Hall into a new Science Center. Our future is bright. Our resolve is strong. And our collective love for this wonderful school knows no bounds. Together, we will continue to shape Kiski’s future – one boy at a time. With all good wishes and our most sincere thanks,
Christopher A. Brueningsen

Giving Tuesday Kiski adopted a popular global non-profit initiative with its first Giving Tuesday on December 1, 2015. The concept is to follow Black Friday, and Cyber Monday (days of shopping) with a day of giving. Charitable organizations worldwide encourage their supporters to make contributions on that specific day. In that first year, we set an aggressive goal to have 75 unique donors contribute to The Kiski Fund (over 10% of our total number of donors from the previous year). During that 24-hour span, we received gifts from 90 Kiski supporters! Last year, we set a new record for participation. By besting our first year, we unlocked the following challenge gifts. In all, $46,096 was raised for Kiski Boys during that one 24-hour window. Giving Tuesday 2016 Challenge Gifts – UNLOCKED ■ Greg Lignelli ’95: $7,500 ■ Dean Mosites ’72: $7,500 ■ Aimee and Jim Usher (parents of TJ Usher ’17): $7,500
This year, we will set our sights on receiving Kiski Funds gifts – of any size – from over 100 unique donors. Giving Tuesday 2017 is November 28th. More details will be shared soon!
The Kiski Science Trust In 2008, alumnus Elliot B. McConnell Jr. ’46, established The Kiski Science Trust. The Kiski Science Trust is an endowed fund to be used for teaching as well as promotion of the sciences at Kiski. The trust is valued at nearly $96,579. The Science Trust has also been generously supported by Harry Seibel ’00, Van Messer ’69 and Mr. McConnell’s family members. The fund benefits the sciences at Kiski by providing annual cash flow to purchase state-of-the-art scientific equipment, attain science-industry guest speakers, explore the sciences outside of the classroom, and allow the students to attend sciencerelated field trips. Elliot’s hope is to help Kiski be nationally recognized for science education. This trust provides an example of ways in which donor support for Kiski enables the School to achieve its goals and maintain excellence in all aspects of the educational experience. If you have an area in which you would like to help The Kiski School achieve its goals of excellence, please contact Steven T. Szilagyi ’88 at 724-639-8029.

Donor Recognition for the Capital Campaign
Capital Campaign Support We would like to acknowledge, celebrate and thank you for your generous commitment to our current Capital Campaign for Kiski. Through transformational pledges and gifts to the School you have positioned Kiski to make “Leadership for the 21st Century” a remarkably successful and record-breaking fundraising initiative. We have raised $28.9 million for the “Leadership for the 21st Century” campaign towards our goal of $31 million. Over $1 million has already been raised for the projects that remain (highlighted in blue) which include the Zeigler Science Center, faculty housing, and renovations to the Turley Dining Hall. Once you combine the campus improvements completed during the campaign that ended in 2010 (highlighted in yellow) with the completed “Leadership for the 21st Century” projects, (highlighted in orange) nearly all corners of our 350-acre campus have been enhanced. Beyond buildings and grounds, your support of “Leadership for the 21st Century” has also bolstered our Tower Society (planned gifts from donors who have designated Kiski as a beneficiary in their wills and/or estate plans), Endowed Scholarship funding, and annual operation fundraising.

Volunteer Recognition Kiski’s Class Captains Class Captains act as liaisons between their School and classmates. They volunteer their time to find lost classmates with outdated contact info. We often ask them to aid our outreach efforts for events, and they amplify our requests for continued Kiski Fund support from alumni. The phenomenal turnout for recent events can be directly attributed to the efforts of this group. Likewise, fundraising successes are realized only through the engagement of alumni – from all giving abilities – by Class Captains. Our strength as a School is directly related to the number of alumni that are active in our community. We attribute our high marks in this area to the following 148 alumni volunteers. If you are interested in joining the esteemed group, please contact the Advancement Office at 724-639-8029 or advancement@kiski.org. Kiski Class Captains: Mr. Robert J. Carson ’49 Mr. Francis S. The leadership group works closely with Chris Brueningsen, Steven T. Szilagyi ’88, the full administrative team, and the Board of Trustees. Members discuss important issues related to Kiski’s advancement and success, and lead by example with their personal support of The Kiski Fund and Capital Campaign. The board is wellinformed, positioning members to serve as valuable Kiski advocates for their classmates and prospective Kiski Boys and parents. “Your donation to the annual fund makes it possible for our teachers to attend workshops and conferences in our academic areas that enable all of us to stay current with best practices in teaching boys. Without your generous gifts, we would be unable to send teachers to national conferences and workshops that require flights and hotel stays.” –John A. Lombardo, Dean of Faculty
“Kiski is second to none in providing professional development for its faculty members. I have personally had the opportunity to travel to Salamanca, Spain, while on sabbatical, Beijing, China, to attend and speak at a conference, as well as to Boston and Los Angeles to attend professional development seminars and conferences all within the past two years. I feel both blessed and thankful for the opportunities Kiski has provided me to continue to be a lifelong learner, giving me the tools and resources to be the best teacher, coach, and administrator I can be. I know that The Kiski Fund has a direct impact on the School’s ability to provide top-notch continuing education for its faculty.” –Marcus Muster, Director of Technology, Math Department Chair, Head Baseball Coach
“Kiski does not require community service hours to graduate. Yet, we are provided many options to serve those who are in need. Every year, we are encouraged to volunteer our time to help nearby causes. Whether it's on Community Service Day when everyone on campus is helping or even on weekend trips, our goal is to help others in big and small ways.” –Brayant Garcia ’19

“Inventionland is a class that lets me take an idea that you would use in everyday life, research similar concepts, and build a new idea into a functional product. It has also helped me improve my public speaking skills while presenting my product idea to my teachers, peers, and judges.” –Jason Kcehowski ’18
“Clubs are one of the best parts of Kiski. Clubs allow people to do what they are passionate about. I've been in the radio club for three years now, and served as club president for two. The radio club is great because it allows me to play the music I like. I am also part of the creative writing club, which has helped me channel my creative side. The K Club lets me take the next generation of Kiski Boys campus tours.” –Daniel Ritton ’19
“Kiski Athletics has not just made me a better athlete, but has taught me to be a good teammate, brother, leader, and above all, a better person. Athletics at Kiski aren't just sports, but classes. They teach you valuable life skills that will stay with you forever.” –Matthew DeGirolamo ’18
“My academic experience at Kiski has been rigorous and challenging, but my teachers are always available for help and assistance. Taking college-level courses at Kiski and having the total boarding school experience is giving me a head start on most kids and setting me up for success at whatever college or university I end up attending.” –Benjamin Crewe ’19

1st Annual Kiski Trustees’ Golf Tournament Our Board of Trustees welcomed the Kiski community to the Pittsburgh Field Club for our first annual Kiski Golf Outing on October 10, 2016. The foursomes of alumni, parents, and corporate sponsors were treated to a beautiful fall day of golf and fellowship. The cost of the event was underwritten by the Board of Trustees. Therefore, we applied all $35,144 raised that day directly to need-based financial aid for deserving Kiski Boys. The program began with a buffet lunch before a shotgun start for the individual stroke play format. Following play, the guests retired to the clubhouse for dinner and drinks. Headmaster Christopher Brueningsen addressed the crowd with an update before Mr. Steven T. Gifts to The Kiski Fund by Alumni Headmaster’s Cup Competition (Unrestricted Gifts to The Kiski Fund Only)
Each year, we rely upon our fantastic Class Captains to energize and organize their classmates to come together to support Kiski. The Headmaster’s Cup provides recognition to the classes and Class Captains who have made an extraordinary effort to give back to Kiski. The Most Dollars and Most Donors Awards are given to classes contributing the largest amount and having the highest number of donors to The Kiski Fund from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. Likewise, classes have the opportunity to achieve the Award for Highest Percentage of Participation in the fiscal year. This gives classes that have fewer members a chance to achieve recognition for their efforts. The Highest Percentage of Participation award is a competition for classes with at least ten active classmates.

Gifts to The Kiski Fund by Parents We would like to thank our parents for supporting The Kiski Fund while funding the education of their Kiski Boys. These gifts are seen as a strong show of confidence in Kiski, and a measure of support that foundations consider when they review our grant requests. Over the past decade, over $8 million has been contributed to Kiski by foundations and we are certain that parent participation in The Kiski Fund – on all levels – contributed positively to those decisions. Volunteer members of The Kiski Fund Parent Committee dedicate their time to encouraging peer participation in The Kiski Fund. Thank you for your advocacy. Giving to Kiski
Small class sizes are a cornerstone of a Kiski education. They also lead to smaller alumni and parent groups to contact for support. Therefore, every gift matters that much more.
Why Give to Kiski? Perhaps you are an alumnus and would like to contribute to the education of our current class of Kiski Boys, just as alumni donated to The Kiski Fund when you were a current student. Or, maybe you are a current parent whose gift will support the faculty and programs that make Kiski so special to your family. Maybe you are a “Friend of Kiski” and simply believe in the good work we are doing with boys. Regardless of your motivation to give, your gift will be greatly appreciated by the boys that receive your support.
Kiski’s Annual Fund: “The Kiski Fund” The Kiski Fund is the School’s annual fundraising priority and a vital source of revenue. Every dollar raised is used to support the operating budget for the current year and assures the highest quality educational experience for our boys. The Kiski School relies on the fund to fulfill current budgeted operating expenses. Your support enables Kiski to fulfill its mission of preparing young men to succeed in college and in life. For Kiski Boys, all of this translates into a traditional college preparatory curriculum enhanced by diverse offerings in the arts and a robust technology program. Small classes allow our teachers to model the habits we expect our students to learn and practice: honesty, civility, tenacity, and open-mindedness. Our teachers are experts in the education of boys. They understand their unique learning needs and they know how to reach and teach young men. Most importantly, they love what they do. Moreover, our faculty is committed to helping our students develop what many have termed “21st Century Skills” – the proficiencies they will need to survive and thrive in college and beyond.
