A ‘Gift in Your Will’ provides two significant philanthropic opportunities. The first entails enhancing educational accessibility for individuals who lack the financial means to secure enrolment at the School. This broader accessibility is realised through a range of scholarships and financial aid, a crucial step toward maintaining a sustainable demographic diversity within our school community. The second opportunity lies in expanding our academic, co-curricular, and community infrastructure to enrich the teaching and learning experiences.

Violet Macansh Bequestor

A Legacy of Generosity

Violet Madeline Macansh, born on September 23 1874, quietly left a profound legacy to The King’s School. Coming from a family deeply connected to the School, her three brothers—John, Francis, and Victor all excelled here.

After inheriting the family estate, Violet faced personal challenges, including a difficult marriage, but returned to live independently at Beggan Beggan. Her thoughtful bequest received in 1950, enabled the School to acquire the site of the Parramatta campus, Gowan Brae, in 1954.

Violet’s generosity has since impacted hundreds of students, providing scholarships that have opened the door to a King’s education. Her legacy continues to live on, transforming the lives of students who, inspired by her gift, are empowered to make a lasting difference in their own communities and beyond. Through her bequest, Violet’s impact reaches far beyond her lifetime, a testament to how one act of giving can continue to transform the future.

Bret Walker SC

Violet Macansh Scholarship Recipient

A Legacy of Service

Bret Walker, a 1972 graduate of The King’s School and recipient of the Violet Macansh Scholarship, holds his time at the School in high regard. Beyond academic success, earning Dux and awards in English, Latin, and History, Bret played a key role in shaping a more inclusive school culture. He stood up against bullying and advocated for fairness, leaving a lasting impact. As School Captain, CUO in the Cadet Corps, Drum Major, and Captain of the Athletics Team, where he set an AAGPS 400-metre record, Bret’s leadership was felt throughout the School. His role in the 1st Debating Team, where he served as Captain, further highlighted his commitment to advocacy.

The Violet Macansh bequest allowed Bret to fully embrace these opportunities, fostering a deep sense of responsibility. His distinguished career as Senior Counsel and his lifelong dedication to justice reflect the values he cultivated at King’s.

For Bret, the Scholarship was more than just financial support—it was a foundation that inspired him to make a difference, leaving a legacy of advocacy and service.

Sir George Halliday Bequestor

A Legacy of Giving Back

Sir George Clifton Halliday was a distinguished Ear, Nose, and Throat surgeon and a long-serving Governor of The Council of The King’s School, exemplifying excellence in both medical and educational leadership. With a career marked by innovation and compassion, he transformed countless lives through surgical precision and patient care.

As Dux of The King’s School (1919), he excelled academically, earning the Ellis Roth Prize for Mathematics, and was a skilled sportsman, excelling in cricket, hockey, and tennis as a Junior NSW Champion. Graduating in medicine from the University of Sydney in 1925, he pursued a career devoted to a life of service in the community.

During World War II, Sir George served in Greece and Palestine. He later became Head of Otolaryngology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and an Honorary Fellow at the University of Sydney. As a School Governor and Foundation Trustee during the 1960s-70s, he championed educational excellence as a key governance pillar at the School, having a significant impact. His legacy leaves an indelible mark on both the School and Australia. Sir George Halliday was knighted in 1967 for his contributions to medicine. His final act of generosity was to leave a major bequest to the School, enabling four means-tested scholarships to be available for boys to gain a King’s education.

A Legacy of Gratitude

Charlie Cullenward’s time at The King’s School carries deep significance for him and his family. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who attended the School from remote areas of NSW, Charlie is continuing a cherished family tradition. While his family always hoped he could join King’s, being the eldest of four siblings made it financially challenging. The GC Halliday Scholarship turned this hope into a reality.

From his first year in Gowan Brae, Charlie embraced the chance to build connections with both boarders and day students, forming friendships that have stayed with him. Moving to Macarthur Waddy later strengthened these bonds, as older students shared advice and support. For Charlie, highlights include weekend activities, rugby, rowing, and spontaneous games of touch on the Doyle’s.

Above all, it’s the sense of community and belonging that he treasures most. With his younger brother joining King’s next year, Charlie is proud to share the opportunities and friendships that have shaped his journey. The GC Halliday Scholarship has not just opened doors, it has helped create lasting memories for him and his family.

Your Invitation to Join The King’s Foundation 1831 Society

The 1831 Society is a group of old boys, current parents, past parents and friends of the School who have left a gift to King’s in their Will.

Should you indicate that you have made a gift in your Will you will be invited to join our 1831 Society.

In recognition of your support of the School, members of The 1831 Society receive:

• An invitation to lunch with the Headmaster, to hear updates about the School

• Recognition on The 1831 Society Honour Board and Registry

• Two tickets to the King’s musical and theatre performances

The King’s School stands on the shoulders of those that have come before us . Today, the School’s community remains instrumental in driving its key developments and progress.

The history of philanthropy has been driven by longstanding support from families who have provided major gifts and bequests to the School. As exemplars of generosity, they leave an extraordinary legacy, which has made an indelible mark in the history of the School. Names such as; Abbott, Binnie, Cade, Douglass, Ford, Friend, Halliday, Harvey, Hungerford, Maple-Brown, Taylor, Thomas, White and the Old Boys’ Union have helped to shape the School’s impact on society, in different ways.

Each new development phase and investment requires courage and vision, as well as practical financial support. Now as in the past, we seek to draw on the wisdom and generosity of our community to lay the School’s future foundations.

The King’s School is on a ten-year runway towards the bicentenary year in 2031. We are now at an important stage when we can set up the School for the next one hundred years. Over the decade ahead, we are committed to to significant scholarship and building projects to ensure our young people receive access to an education that maximises each student’s potential.

We recommend you seek independent legal and financial counsel when preparing your Will or drafting a Codicil. You may wish to support the School by utilising one of the proposed wordings or suggested phrases provided.

If you wish to direct your gift for a specific purpose, we encourage you to discuss your intentions with the Head of Foundation. Please note that the more flexible the gift, the easier it is for the School to implement your wishes. Be assured that all discussions will be handled with the utmost confidentiality.

For those with an existing Will, you can include The King’s School Foundation by adding a Codicil, which allows you to amend your Will without creating a new one. A Codicil form is included in this booklet for your convenience.

Frequently Asked Questions

My bequest won’t be large; will it still make a difference?

Absolutely. Even smaller contributions are meaningful. With careful management, these funds can grow over time, providing returns that far exceed the initial amount. This allows your gift to make a lasting difference, especially in supporting students in financial need. It’s your dedication to securing our future that truly matters.

I’d like to establish a scholarship during my lifetime but won’t have enough capital until my Will is executed. Are there options for me?

Yes, there are options. Some donors choose to start funding a scholarship annually during their lifetime and then arrange for the capital sum for a perpetual scholarship to be provided through their Will. Is there a minimum amount required to set up a perpetual scholarship?

Yes, the minimum donation to create a named Academic, Music, Boarding, or Indigenous Scholarship in perpetuity is generally $1M+. However, smaller contributions are also appreciated and can be directed to the The King’s School Foundation Scholarship, Bursaries & Prizes Fund.

Should I leave a specific amount or a percentage of my Will?

Considering the changing value of money over time, leaving a percentage of your estate may be more effective. This approach helps maintain the real value of your gift and saves you from having to revise your Will frequently, ensuring that your intended beneficiaries, including King’s, are appropriately supported.

I’m considering having an external entity manage and distribute annual amounts from my bequest. Would this be easier for the School?

The Foundation is supported by expert advisors who manage its endowed funds conservatively to ensure long-term growth. Their role includes overseeing donations and ensuring they are used according to the donor’s wishes. Additionally, the Board benefits from external advice, provided at no cost to the Foundation. Commercial entities may charge fees that reduce the impact of your gift. We recommend seeking independent legal and financial advice when planning your Will or adding a Codicil.
