Year 9 students are at a pivotal moment in their development and begin to ask questions such as “Who am I? Who do I want to be? How do others perceive me?” It is a period when young adults are tentatively developing a sense of self, are beginning to explore how they fit into the world around them and start to question the status quo. With this in mind, KDS has developed a full-day program specifically designed to support and challenge our Year 9 cohort on their journey of self-discovery. Called “Nitzan” (meaning blossom), the program is dedicated to growing our students in a way that supports healthy living beyond school. Jayne Wise, Nitzan co-ordinator, describes Nitzan as a program “that provides voice and choice within a framework”. Nitzan “gives our adolescents ownership over their learning, empowering them to build skills for their future through a variety of vibrant, dynamic and practical learning opportunities.” Each term has a theme that is developed through activities, excursions and peak experiences. In term 3, our students were encouraged to explore the notion of giving back (Tikkun Olam). They heard from a range of philanthropic institutions about the work they do and the impact it has on the community. They then chose one of these organisations and volunteered weekly.
