MISSION STATEMENT

Key School Report on Philanthropy 2022-2023
Our Mission Key School is founded upon the conviction that children are innately curious about themselves and the world; they want to learn, they want to discover, and they want to create. Our mission is to nourish and guide this natural exuberance, energy, and delight in the search for meaning, so that each student embraces lifelong learning and develops into an informed, thoughtful, and constructive member of society. With these beliefs and objectives in mind, we commit to: Provide a dynamic education that demands rigor, intellectual independence, creativity, interdisciplinary thought, and openness to differing perspectives through academic and co-curricular programs that teach students experientially, as active participants in the learning process. Guide and support students in their efforts to mature intellectually, socially, and emotionally; to make decisions for themselves and take responsibility for those decisions; to address their individual learning needs; and to broaden and deepen their talents and interests. Prepare students with the collaborative and competitive abilities and the communication and thinking skills they need to effectively undertake challenges and assume responsibilities in an interconnected, complex world. Cultivate a community in which teaching and learning are lifelong endeavors for all, pursued through reflection, private study, and communal engagement. Sustain an ethical school culture that respects the dignity of every human being, recognizes that liberty must be balanced by responsibility and individual action by the needs of others, and stresses to all members of a diverse school community the importance of trust, mutual respect, compassion, and service to others. Adopted by the Board of Trustees on April 30, 2014.

Dear Key School Community, First School students learning and playing on a newly built Nature Play & Learning Space, Fun at Fusco events, Orff Schulwerk and Key Theater performances, students, families and faculty marching in the Annapolis Pride Parade, repeat MIAA championships by our baseball and tennis teams, and daily discovery grounded in curiosity are the memories that come to mind as I reflect on the 2022-2023 academic year. These experiences are a direct result of the commitment to Key’s Mission that our students, parents/guardians, faculty, staff, and alums put into action each and every day. They are also made possible by the philanthropic support of the Key community. The generosity of the Key community during the 2022-2023 academic year resulted in donations to the Annual Fund exceeding $600,000 and $1.4 million raised for the Science and Library Center and the First School Nature Play & Learning Space renovations. These critical funds advanced Key 360°’s strategic priorities by creating classroom and learning spaces that advance our Mission and meet the evolving needs of our students. With construction on the Science and Library Center well underway, we are only months away from seeing our students benefit from the new hub of the Upper School that this project provides. The volunteer efforts of our Parents’ Association, coupled with our most successful Annapolis Book Festival ever, resulted in nearly $130,000 raised. Perhaps even more important, were the community-building opportunities that our Parents’ Association created throughout the year. From the Welcome Back Picnic to class gatherings, parent and guardian volunteers strengthen existing bonds and create avenues for new friendships to form. The unparalleled experience our students receive, and Key’s margin of excellence for learning, discovery and curiosity are made possible, in large part, by philanthropy. Overall, Key raised over $18 million in 2022-2023. On behalf of everyone at Key School, thank you for your generous support! Warmly,
Matthew Nespole Head of School

Key School Report on Philanthropy 2022-2023
Dear Key School Community, The 2022-2023 school year was a vibrant and transformative year for our community as we continued to advance the priorities of our Key 360° framework in very concrete and visible ways. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your gifts of time, talent and philanthropic treasure. Because of YOU—our community of students, faculty, staff, volunteers, current families, extended families, alums, Parents’ Association, and Board of Trustees—Key continues to thrive and evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of our students and the world. What an exciting time for our community! Here are just a few tangible initiatives that came to fruition this year because of your generosity. In their first year, our Directors of Curriculum and Instruction have made a significant impact on our academic program and professional development and created the roadmap to further our program. Our First School Nature Play & Learning Space is complete and alive with imaginative adventures and smiling faces. Overlooking this wonderland is a new outdoor deck providing our older students with a space to collaborate or enjoy the spectacle of our youngest students in full play mode, who often stop just to say “Hi!” to the big kids. We are also thrilled to soon unveil the renovated library space in the Science and Library Center to support our Upper School program. One of the most critical initiatives, and closest to my heart, is our investment in our faculty and staff by adjusting the pay scale and increasing salaries. Finally, in collaboration with the Investment, Finance and Long-Range Planning Committees, the full Board of Trustees drafted and adopted a formal endowment draw policy in January 2023 to support Key’s operational budgets. Serving as the Board of Trustees president for the past three years has been an honor. My husband Ed and I have been Key parents for 20 years, and we cannot thank this community enough for partnering with us in raising our two incredible daughters (Erin ’16 and Grace ’23). Serving as president truly has been a labor of love. I have passed the gavel on to President John Hilbert, who will continue to lead our Board in advancing Key 360°. We are in good hands, and as I have said/sung before, “The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades.” With love and gratitude,

Major Gifts DEIB GIFT
Thanks to the generosity of a donor whose gift was directed towards Key School’s DEIB efforts, 13 faculty and staff members were able to attend the 2022 NAIS People of Color Conference (PoCC) in San Antonio, TX. PoCC is a flagship program of the National Association of Independent Schools’ commitment to equity and justice in teaching, learning and organizational development. The mission of the conference is to provide a safe space for leadership, professional development and networking for people of color and allies of all backgrounds in independent schools.
on 3 ! Key School’s campus continues to be transformed thanks to the generous support of donors to the Key on 3 campaign. First School students have enjoyed their new Nature Plan and Learning Space for nearly a year. Upper School students eagerly anticipate the completion of the Science and Library Center renovation which creates a mission-aligned space that meets the varied needs of Key’s oldest learners—from space for collaboration and connection to a place for quiet, independent study and accessible academic support and accommodations.
SARMA-RAMANI FAMILY FUND FOR MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL INNOVATION The Sarma-Ramani Family Fund for Middle and Upper School Innovation was used to support the expansion and growth of the Middle School and Upper School Innovation Lab. Funds were used to purchase new computers with CAD (computer-aided design) and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software, which allow students to move through the engineering design process, from ideation to design to manufacturing using industry-standard tools. Key’s Innovation Lab thrives thanks to the support of generous donors and continues to foster student interest in STEM-related activities through exposure to state-of-the-art equipment and hands-on learning.

PA DONATIONS TO KEY SCHOOL Lower School Climber After learning that the Lower School Climber located outside of the Manse Addition was no longer safe for the students and needed to be replaced; PA President Beth Lapczynski offered to pay for a new Climber with the PA’s net profits from its 2022-23 events. After Beth presented it to the PA board in May, it was unanimously approved to allocate $40,000 to purchase and install a new Lower School Climber. PA leadership initiated Innovation Grants as part of the PA’s gift to the school offering two $5,000 grants to the faculty through an application process. One of the recipients was Middle School Spanish teacher Cristella Catalano who used the grant money to purchase 15 iPads for foreign language instruction to increase the language fluency, vocabulary and development of the students in the Middle School world language program.

WAYS TO GIVE When considering a gift to Key, there are many opportunities that will not only support the excellence of the School’s outstanding programs, but may also provide a tax-deductible contribution to the donor.
Cash Contributions Unrestricted gifts of cash are the easiest and most popular way to support Key School. The School accepts gifts of cash including payment by Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Credit cards can be processed online or in the Advancement Office during normal business hours. Checks should be made payable to Key School.
Simple Giving The Advancement Office can process automatic weekly, monthly or bi-monthly debits to your credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express) or checking account. Please contact the Advancement Office for more information.
Matching Gifts The impact of a contribution can be greatly increased by a matching employer gift. When considering a donation, consult with your employer and, if applicable, forward the completed matching gift form to the Advancement Office with your contribution. A matching gift can dramatically increase your support for the School.
Stocks And Securities Gifts of stock or securities benefit the donor and the School. This type of gift is a tax-deductible contribution and the donor may avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciated stock or security. Your broker and the Advancement Office can provide information and assistance.
Deferred or Planned Gifts Gifts of real estate, tangible personal property, bequests, life insurance, and Charitable Trusts are of great value to the School and may provide many advantages to the donor. Please contact your personal financial advisors or the Advancement Office for information on planned giving opportunities.
