Kabriel ’s Life in Words "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Shakespeare could not have known that he was describing a precious gift that would be given to the world centuries later. Kabriel Rikia Helen Wrighten was affectionately known by many names: YumYum, Aunty, Muffin, Kaby Baby, or simply Kaby. Whatever name she was called, the sentiment was always the same. Her compassion, kindness, and humility exuded the same sweet fragrance with every mention. The late Richard R. Wrighten, Sr. and the late Bernadette B. Wrighten had no idea that on November 1, 1992, the world would be forever changed by the arrival of their youngest daughter. Kaby was wise beyond her years and loved with a heart that knew no bounds. She was raised in a home grounded in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and taught to follow His example of love and sacrifice. At an early age, she accepted the Lord as her personal Savior. Kaby was a faithful member of Royal Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Sunbeam Choir, participated in the Nursery Ministry, and worked at the church's summer camp. She received her education through the Charleston County and Dorchester County School District Two school systems. She later continued her education at Trident Technical College; however, ongoing health challenges prevented her from completing her studies. One of Kaby's greatest joys was caring for children. Most notably, she worked as an in-home daycare provider through Kaby's Kids. She had an indescribable love for children of all ages and backgrounds. During the week and on most weekends, Kaby was rarely seen without her backpack and a child or two by her side. On Sundays, she could often be found in the nursery at Royal Missionary Baptist Church caring for babies and toddlers. If she wasn't in the nursery, she was sitting in the balcony nurturing a child who needed a little extra attention while their parents served in ministry. Kaby also had a passion for travel. There was rarely a spring or summer when she was not embarking on a cruise, traveling in a caravan, or boarding an airplane for her next adventure. She equally enjoyed great food. Not only could she recommend the best and newest restaurants, but she could also prepare restaurant-quality meals that left everyone speechless and eagerly anticipating the next invitation to her table. In addition to cooking and traveling, Kaby loved an uplifting church service. She was not an avid movie or television watcher. Instead, she chose to spend her time worshipping and listening to her favorite local and national gospel artists. Though the world may have viewed her as sick, Kaby was truly an overcomer. Her many diseases and disorders never stood a chance against her unwavering faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her God-given strength, resilience, and determination are qualities to be admired and emulated. The sibling chain is now missing a cherished link. Left to treasure the memories of their beloved little sister are her sisters, Kelcia L. Thornton of Summerville, South Carolina; Siporia R. Wrighten of Knightdale, North Carolina; and Shuneca (Ron) Harrington of Moseley, Virginia; and her brothers, Bernard T. Thornton, Jr. and Richard R. Wrighten, Jr., both of Charleston, SC; Her nephews, Jasiah R. L. Wrighten of Atlanta, Georgia; Savaad E. Miller of North Charleston, South Carolina; and Jeremiah A. Godfrey of Summerville, South Carolina; along with her nieces, Skylar M. Mitchell of Ladson, South Carolina, and Autumn M. Whitaker of Knightdale, North Carolina, will forever remember Auntie Kaby as the fun-loving aunt who cooked for them, teased them, spoiled them, and loved them with all of her heart. Although Kaby did her fair share of spoiling others, she learned from some of the very best: her aunts, Avis B. AndrewsGary of Knoxville, Tennessee; Donna L. Thorne, Z. Lynn Thorne, Cheryl G. Thorne, and Angel Thorne; and her uncles, F. Keith (Shirley) Thorne, Raymond L. Thorne, and Burton I. Thorne all of Charleston, SC. Her godchildren, Marcus Garner, Micah Davidson, Memphis Gates, and Myla Geddies-Miller, will deeply miss the birthday cards, unexpected gifts, random FaceTime calls, and thoughtful text messages that brightened their lives. Her god sister, Adejah Hall, may have long outgrown the Easter dresses, but she will forever cherish the memories of being proudly paraded throughout the church by her beloved God Sissy Kaby. Her cousins, play cousins, extended family, best friends, friends, and church family are left with countless memories and treasured experiences that will continue to comfort and sustain them in the days, months, and years ahead. Though her physical presence is no longer with us, the love, faith, and joy that Kaby shared so freely will remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
