The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center Walk of Fame

DEAR FRIENDS,

It is our pleasure to present the Kate’s Gratitude Report for the fiscal year July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2022. We are thankful for many things, but first and foremost, our Members, donors, volunteers and friends who continue to support the Kate. Throughout the challenges brought on by the pandemic, YOU assured us that this wonderful place needed to be here—open and able to present artists and cultural programs that you love.

We are grateful for the growing interest in the Katharine Hepburn Museum and the Spirit of Katharine Hepburn Award, both of which sustain Miss Hepburn’s legacy. It was an honor to present the 2021 award to Sam Waterston in November of that year and we echo his salute to Kate: “ . . . to her great wit, appetite for work, vitality, energy and spiriting expectations. And above all, her uprightness—a quality in short supply these days.”

THE GREAT BIG SCHOLARSHIP MATCHING CHALLENGE!

All donations matched dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000

Gaining confidence for self-expression through music. Developing leadership skills as president of Ballet Club. Promoting community events with digital media productions. Connecting with peers through theater. Teaching elementary students the joy of music.

All of the above reflect the ways in which the five Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center Scholarship recipients to date are pursuing their dreams.

The scholarship was launched in 2019 in celebration of the Kate’s 10th anniversary. It is inspired by Miss Hepburn’s independent and spirited approach to life, her zeal for acting and her varied other interests.

During Miss Hepburn’s time studying at Bryn Mawr College with a double major in history and philosophy, she developed a love for acting. While fervently pursuing a career on stage and screen, she continued to enjoy many other interests such as golf, tennis, swimming, painting and even flying airplanes! As such, this scholarship recognizes the individual interests of the student applicants and provides flexible funding that can be used toward college, a trade school, or other formal training program. Equally important is how the arts have positively impacted a student’s life or how he or she may have contributed to their community through the arts.

Over the past three years, the scholarship was funded by a small, dedicated group of individuals. In two of those three years, the applicants were so strong and the need so evident that the Kate’s Education Committee pooled resources to be able to fund two awards. With secure future funding, we will increase the award from a $1,000 scholarship to $4,000; have the ability to award more than one scholarship in those unique years; and, over time, broaden eligibility to other towns.

MEET THE RECIPIENTS

Unique in their own ways, each recipient (and all of the applicants) were equally impressive, making the selection process very difficult. We are certain these young leaders will do amazing things. Thank you to all who have supported these inspirational young people!

2020

Maggie Maselli, a dancer since the age of 2, shared her talent as choreographer for three high school musicals. She attends Hamilton College double majoring in physics and dance. Maggie is president of the Ballet Club, plays horn in orchestra and ensemble, performs in dance concerts and is Student Assistant Director, managing fellow student orientation leaders.

2021

Timothy Thomas was drawn to music as a toddler and tried to play his older siblings’ violins! In elementary school he realized his true love was singing. Timothy attends Cairn University as a music education major and achieved Dean’s List his first two years. He is a dedicated choir member performing at school and on the road with choral trips.

Davonté Mitchell knew music would be a big part of his life at a young age and considers retired Goodwin Elementary music teacher Lois Geer a key inspiration. A music education major at Western Connecticut State University, he realized his dream of teaching early as he had the opportunity to substitute at Goodwin in 2021! He is active in WestConn musical productions and most recently performed in Cinderella.

2022

Matthew Johnson quickly realized he enjoyed working behind the scenes rather than on stage. He developed his skills in photography, digital music and video production and has directed live stream events for Old Saybrook High School. In 2022, he produced and directed an award-winning short documentary film, Pain is Temporary. Matthew is a digital media and design major at the University of Connecticut.

Michael Morant began his theater career in a Kate program where he was cast as a firefly. He’s performed in several school productions, including a virtual War of the Worlds, and has written a play about a young person on the autism spectrum growing up in today’s world. Michael is a business management major at Dean College and plans to participate in their musical theater program.
