Welcome to the Winter edition of Encore.
We’re delighted to bring you another packed program of events as we head into the cooler months. This edition is filled with everything The Juniors Group of Clubs has to offer across our three venues. There’s no better place to be this winter!
As every rugby league fan would know, Alex Johnston made history on 13 March, becoming the highest try-scorer in the game with his 213th try against the Roosters. To mark this incredible milestone, Alex wore a special jersey on the night.
We’re proud to share that The Juniors successfully secured this jersey at auction. It is now on display on Level One, near the entrance to Henry’s Bar for members to view. As a local La Perouse junior, it’s only fitting that this piece of rugby league history is showcased here, where his journey began.
The footy season is well underway, and it’s fantastic to see so many young boys and girls taking the field across our junior leagues. Participation remains strong, and we continue to promote and support rugby league throughout the South Sydney region. This is no small task, and I would like to sincerely thank the parents and volunteers whose dedication makes it all possible week after week.
With State of Origin just around the corner, excitement is building. With Laurie Daley returning as coach for the 2026 Blues, we wish him and the team all the best as they look to bounce back from last season’s narrow 2–1 series loss to Queensland.
This edition’s community focus is the Winter Weakies swimming intra-club, held at the Des Renford Aquatic Centre in Maroubra. It’s a fantastic way to stay active, connect with others, and enjoy a fun, inclusive environment during winter. I encourage all members to get involved—full details can be found on page 31.
One of the things I value most about our Clubs is the incredible variety of entertainment on offer year-round. The coming months feature a stellar line-up in our award-winning Wintle Theatre. Highlights include Australian rock legends The Angels, club favourite Peter Northcote with his Yacht Rock show, and Mark Andrew’s outstanding Elvis tribute. We also look forward to the rescheduled Songbirds of the ’60s & ’70s on Sunday 9 August—a must-see for lovers of classic pop. Be sure to secure your tickets early—we look forward to seeing you at the shows.
Best Regards
Keith McCraw PRESIDENT
As the cooler months set in, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all members with the latest edition of Encore.
The Juniors Group of Clubs continues to deliver a full calendar of live entertainment, exciting promotions, and the very best in sport—live on the big screens across all three venues. We look forward to welcoming you over the coming months as you enjoy everything we have on offer.
Members may have noticed our updated trading hours, which came into effect on the 1st of April. These governmentmandated changes apply across all clubs.
Our venues now operate from 10:00am to 4:00am. There are a few exceptions:
• The fitness centre continues to operate under its existing hours
• The ground floor café opens daily from 9:00am
All other areas of the Club open from 10:00am.
It’s that time of year again—your chance to win a brand-new car! Our “Power Up & Drive Away” promotion runs from Thursday 11 June, with the big draw taking place on Thursday 30 July at 7:30pm. To enter, simply swipe your membership card each time you visit Kingsford, Maroubra, or Malabar during the promotional period. As an added bonus, swiping between 12:00am and 1:00am earns you an extra entry. Be sure to be at one of our venues on draw night— you must be present to win.
We’re pleased to announce extended Happy Hours across all three venues, now running every day of the week:

• Monday to Friday: 4:00pm – 6:00pm
• Saturday & Sunday: 3:00pm – 5:00pm
Enjoy $5 house wines, $6 standard tap beers ($5.50 Great Northern), and $7 house spirits. Please note this offer runs year-round, except during March and September when our 49% off drinks promotion takes place.
Our popular Winter Warmers Raffle returns, featuring over $3,000 in prizes. With 40 prizes up for grabs, it’s set to be another fantastic event.
Tickets are just $1 each, with bonus tickets available for bulk purchases. The raffle will be drawn on Sunday 7 June at 2:00pm, replacing Lucky Cards for that day. Full details can be found on page 5 of Encore.
The regulatory environment across the registered clubs sector continues to evolve, bringing important changes to how we operate. Many of these updates came into effect from 31 March 2026, and we are working diligently to ensure full compliance. From time to time, our team may request additional information or follow updated procedures. These measures are in place to meet our obligations while maintaining the integrity, safety, and security of The Juniors. Compliance remains a key priority, helping to protect our members, staff, and the long-term sustainability of the Club. I would like to thank all members for your ongoing support and patience as we continue to strengthen our practices.
Best Regards
Geoff Knight CEO

Why? There's too many upsides to ignore!
1. 80% of brain development happens by the age of 3, and 90% by the age of 5.
From birth to age five, your child's brain is developing at it's most rapid rate - an astonishing million neural connections are made per second. These connections have a long term impact on one’s life, with positive connections leading to healthier and more successful lives. Swimming helps your baby's brain grow by creating a tactile environment that facilitates communication, feedback and modulation from one side of the brain to the other. A study of 7000 children by Griffith University in Australia has found that children who swim are advanced in their mental and physical development, compared to their peers who don't swim.
2. Swimming helps develop motor skills, using the tactile, proprioception and vestibular senses.
Having your child touch, kick, move their arms, splash and glide through water activates sensory systems that don't easily get activated on land, helping kids boost brain development, their body awareness, balance, co-ordination, and attention. The combination of movement in the water also enhances cognitive behaviour, reduces stress and improves blood flow. Suddenly learning to swim before you can walk doesn't sound like a waste of time!
3. Safety.
If you live on the coast, love the water or a good seaside holiday, exposing kids to water can't happen soon enough. It's a mistake to assume that kids aren't going to learn how to swim before the age of 4 or 5. The value isn't in learning how to swim strokes, instead, it's about exposing them to water, so they become familiar with it.

They're going to understand water a lot sooner. In a structured environment they're taught to wait, and not to run when they see water. It's teaching them safety and survival skills.
4. Getting into the water with your child is an opportunity to bond over a fun new world together.
If you start swimming lessons early enough, you'll be a part of the lesson. You'll go from nervously holding them too tightly, to relaxed and confident with how to handle your child in the water. When both of you are relaxed, the water will become an incredible playground the two of you can explore together, uninterrupted. The bonding experience with you as well as a good teacher will have a positive impact on their brain development and social skills. The water will be a source of joy that you can confidently take with you to the beach or that warm seaside holiday you've been craving, too!
Like anything else in life, it's never too late to start. Kieren Perkins didn't start swimming until he was 8, so don't panic if you've left it 'til later!
So when do you start swimming lessons? It's never too early! While we've seen programs that start from as little as six weeks, our own water temperature at In The Deep is perfect for as young as three month olds. And what a beautiful bonding experience it'll be for you and your child, in our busy, distracting world.
Grab your swimmers and we'll sea you at the pool!

The Juniors is proud to celebrate one of our own, with this special display of Alex Johnston’s match-worn jersey from the historic moment he became the greatest try scorer in Australian Rugby League history.
Now on display on the corridor into Henry’s Bar alongside a striking mural, this piece commemorates Alex’s record-breaking 213th try — a milestone etched into the game’s history.
Alex’s journey began right here in our local community, playing for La Perouse United Panthers in the Junior League from just 9 years old. Reflecting on those early days, Alex said:
"Getting down to training every Tuesday and Thursday, playing on the weekend with your mates... it was the best time of the week."
The Juniors has long been committed to supporting grassroots rugby league, ensuring young players can take the field without barriers. Through our support, kids in the Junior League have their registration, insurance, jerseys, shorts and socks covered — helping nurture the next generation of players, just like Alex.
“I think my parents, when they saw me catch the footy for the first time and have a bit of fun were probably going to do whatever they could to help me, but definitely the Juniors' support was vital.”
We invite all members to come down to Henry’s Bar, check out this incredible piece of history, and grab a photo with the mural. It’s a celebration of local talent, community support, and what can be achieved when passion meets opportunity.
