State Of Origin
Welcome to the latest edition of the Encore magazine. This will be our first full edition of the Encore in 2021 and it’s a great pleasure to be able to report to you. The club has been working its way back to full capacity with restrictions around capacities and holding functions etc relaxed. The most pleasing aspect of this is that our members and the local community at large have responded by getting out to our three venues and enjoying the freedoms that relaxed rules have allowed. Hospitality in general was hit extremely hard in 2020 and we are thankful for the ability to provide fully functioning venues currently, albeit with a few restrictions still in place.
With another great season of NRL well and truly underway it is also pleasing to see the 3 State of Origin games back in the middle of the year where they belong. These games are always great spectacles and are better viewed surrounded by others cheering on their home state. All three Juniors venues will be showing the games and it’s always a good night to come in have a meal, a drink and watch the game. Whilst I’m talking footy it has also been a good year so far for the mighty Rabbitohs. While not without it’s challenges to date, they are comfortably sitting within the top 8 and looking good for a run at the premiership later in the year.

In light of recent events and small outbreaks in NSW I remind our patrons to stay vigilant, to continue to practice COVID safe measures and to continue to scan into venues when required. These are very small prices to pay for being in one of the safest places in the world enjoying freedoms that other countries are envious of. As we have done all along, we will work with any advice provided from the government and adapt to situations as they arise if needed.
Strategic Plan The board and management of the club have recently begun working on our medium to long term vision for the club and creation of a strategic plan. This process will let us define the future direction of the club to ensure our ongoing financial viability and success. The world around us is constantly evolving and we have to move with the times and provide venues that reflect this. It is an exciting time for us and we hope to provide our members with an insight into this process later in the year.

Welcome to the June edition of the Encore magazine. The next three months are absolutely jammed packed with events, promotions, and activities for our loyal members to enjoy. Over the last month or so it has been very pleasing to see the club becoming busier and more vibrant each week. Our food outlets have been especially busy with many people venturing out throughout the week and enjoying the multiple dining options that we have on offer.
Dine & Discover The Dine and Discover program initiated by the NSW state Government has been in full swing now since April and we have been very pleased with the response by our members and guests. We appreciate that people can spend their vouchers anywhere for dining and entertainment purposes but many of you have chosen the Juniors clubs to benefit from this initiative. The program runs until the end of June when the vouchers expire and we hope that more patrons will utilise our services. The Discover voucher can be used on any of our shows going forward that are on sale as long as the voucher is redeemed before June 30. To do this you must come in to the club to scan your voucher.
Live Entertainment One of the most pleasing things here at the Juniors has been that we are now able to sell tickets to shows with much greater capacities in our Wintle Theatre. As our President Keith McCraw mentioned in his report the members and local community have come back in large numbers especially with our ticketed events having been starved of quality live entertainment for so long. Our Saturday night bands have also been hugely successful in recent weeks with the capacity to dance now allowed. Our members have been very patient with all of the restrictions in this area and I thank you for that.
Entertainment
Functions Along with entertainment, our functions department has been busily ramping up their capabilities. Functions were all but banned for a time but we have been able to accommodate larger numbers and now we can plan to host many end of year events. Our function calendar is rapidly filling up so if you were thinking of holding any type of event this year you should not hesitate in contacting our function team via the website thejuniors.com.au or phoning the club on 93497555.

Themed Trivia One of our recent success stories has been the monthly “themed” trivia which is held on selected Wednesdays at Kingsford. With past themes such as Harry Potter, Seinfeld, and Disney proving popular, we have some other great themes coming including 80’s music in June, The Simpsons in July & Brooklyn Nine Nine in August. THE JUNIORS IN YOUTH OFF THE STREETS CELEBRATES 30 YEARS OF LIFE-CHANGING IMPACT In April 1991, Father Chris Riley opened a refuge in Marrickville for street kids – and Youth Off The Streets was born. Thirty years later, Youth Off The Streets has grown to provide a range of services that span early intervention, safe accommodation, psychological care, high school education, scholarships, training and employment programs. With the support of South Sydney Junior Rugby League Club and the ClubGRANTS scheme,
students at Youth Off The Street’s Bowen College have been offered opportunities to participate in excursions, employability training and certification, and a range of health and wellbeing initiatives. Bowen College is one of six accredited
independent high schools operated by Youth Off The Streets. The schools are designed for young people who have become disengaged from mainstream education due to challenges such as homelessness, poor mental health, and domestic and family violence.
Students from Youth Off The Streets’ Bowen College take part in surfing lessons.

DYMOCKS
Children’s Charities
Dymocks Children’s Charities is an independent, Australia-wide charity that provides new books to children in priority locations around Australia. The South Sydney Junior Rugby League Club has been supporting Dymocks Children’s Charities’ Book Bank Program for several years. Book Bank is the charity’s longest running program, supporting children in years 3-6 from priority schools across the country. Students select a brand new book (four per year), every year, for at least three years.
Funding from the club means that students from Maroubra Bay Public School and La Perouse Public School select a brand new book each term from a carefully curated list including best-sellers, classic titles and new releases. The aim of the program is to engage the children with their learning and cultivate a love of reading. Students are encouraged to share their books with their classmates and take the books home to keep at the end of every term.
Feedback from the teachers and students consistently tells us that Book Bank is one of the most powerful ways to motivate children to read. “Book Bank is a rare and valuable gift. Our classrooms have new books that are both engaging and interesting simply because the students chose them themselves. Most of these books will be going into homes to supplement home libraries so that students can read, share and talk about literacy with friends and family. With the recent closure of public and school libraries, having books at home has never been more important. When children own a book, they feel even more connected to the book, and have a more personal connection to literacy. It’s no secret that at In The Deep we love to create relaxed little swimmers with graceful stroke''s and technique. We don’t want to just rush them through a program; we want to help them fall in love with the water and the sport of swimming. We want them to feel incredible in the water, no matter their ability. And with the complexity of swimming, this takes time. I’m always finding opportunities to simplify our program so it fits with this ethos, and I realised our fins levels were creating results from an overbearing lesson plan load. We’ve expanded our Fins levels to create more opportunities for kids to uncover what their special swimming power is, create time to put into practice and explore the techniques they’ve worked hard to develop, and add in new activities that’ll bring more fun-times and good-vibes! It’ll relieve our teachers of program overwhelm, too. Win-win! Levels Purple and Blue 01 are now Purple, Green and Blue Fins — Stroke Foundations Levels Blue 02 and Green are now Silver and Gold Wings — Stroke Development
A more easy time for kids joining us half-way through their swimming journey. We’re now adding freestyle arms earlier, to help children who are in an unfamiliar environment. In the past we were asking kids to go back to focus only on foundational skills, which created frustration. They’ve arrived at our school having done laps of haphazard, stressful freestyle with poor technique which can be really heartbreaking; but understandably, they want to do big-kid swimming, so we don’t want to dishearten these children.
We’re adding in more activities that kids associate with swimming earlier, to help them feel that they’re doing great and still achieving, whilst we help them coursecorrect. We’ll have more time in Fins to explore their foundations so that once they’re in Wings, they’ll be ready to develop their strokes with the grace and ease we’re looking for. Expect more flow, less stagnation. Kids should be able to flow with more ease through the updated program, getting less stuck in a level. They’ll have more time to grasp what they’re doing, to explore their abilities better. There’ll also be more time for fun – we think kids will bring home more beaming faces from their lessons! They’ll be receiving more ribbons and that’s always fun, right?! Teachers that are more empowered to do their work, well. The teachers too will hopefully have a more enjoyable experience teaching; there’ll be less frustration in trying to get through a chock-full lesson plan. It was quite a stressful 30 minutes trying to get through everything on the lesson plan, with no room for play. They’ll have more freedom to explore activities with the kids that’ll help manage their energy, too. Oh and um more fun please! My intention was to empower my teachers, to empower the kids so that they have more fun. When you walk into In The Deep, what makes it special is you see little kids giggling and having fun; I think this change takes it to a whole new level, don’t you think?!
