Welcome to the latest edition of the Encore magazine We haven’t produced an edition since the initial COVID shutdown and it is great to be able to connect with our members again. As you know the club is open but only in a reduced capacity in line with government regulations. It’s disappointing that we can’t offer all the events and amenities that we have in the past but hopefully this is only for the short term.

The Juniors Group of Clubs are very much committed to returning bigger and better than ever when we can. But for now, we will offer any services that regulations allow to our members and hope to see you soon in a COVID safe environment.

We have adopted stringent cleaning and social distancing measures in order to keep our members as safe as possible.

The light rail is now in full operation and running from The Juniors Kingsford all the way to Circular Quay. The 400 express bus to and from the city now operates from the platforms in the light rail terminal right outside the club. The train provides an efficient way to get to and from the club if you live on the light rail route. We look forward to the light rail being utilised more and more as we head back to some sort of normality.

Car Park

Randwick Council have very quickly and efficiently restored the car park next to the club into a great addition to the club’s parking options. The car park is for everyone in the local area but will greatly assist our members during the busy times over the weekend to gain parking close to the club. With many of our members driving to the Juniors we cannot thank Randwick Council enough for providing this great service to the local area.

The Rabbitohs

One of the more positive things to happen to the Juniors is the relocation of the Rabbitohs administration team to the Kingsford club. Our Games Room on the fourth floor has been converted into new office space which will see the Rabbitohs administration team move into until the construction of the Centre of Excellence is completed at Heffron Park. The two organisations have always worked hand in hand and this move will be a huge positive for the club in general.

As this edition goes to print the Rabbitohs are having another stellar season. With many key players retiring last season including Greg Inglis, Sam Burgess and John Sutton, coach Wayne Bennett has once again done an exceptional job with the team. Here’s hoping we can make another tilt at the premiership!

Geoff Knight It is my pleasure to write to all our loyal members again.

Firstly I would like to thank all of you who have patronised the club since we re-opened in June for adapting to all the COVID rules and regulations regarding sign ins, temperature checks, social distancing and general behaviour when inside the club. We know that we err on the side of caution where some others don’t, but we want to remain compliant and open for our members. That is our number one priority at the moment. The current regulations look to be with us for the foreseeable future and we are adapting our venue to best suit this. I hope that when I next report to you we can announce some more exciting developments and rule changes.

Members Only

The decision was made when we re-opened to make the club members only. We felt that this was the safest way to provide the sign in details the government requires for contact tracing. I think that the results have shown state-wide that NSW has the most superior contact tracing protocols in place and this is helping us to avoid situations like what we are seeing in Victoria at the moment. I have to thank our patrons for their understanding in this area. To assist with that we are offering a reduced 6-month COVID membership for all non-members for a limited time. Please remember to swipe in and have your temperature checked when you enter the club at all times.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the retirement of one of the club’s longest serving employees, Paul Foley.

years and was well known to many of our members. I want to personally thank Paul for his years of service and his dedication to his job and wish him all the best in retirement.

Great Food on Offer

One area that is still operating are our 4 great food outlets. Our members have been very supportive of all of our outlets - the Sundeck Brasserie, Ocean Dragon, Treasures Chinese, and of course Pinocchio’s. Much has been reported on the plight of the restaurant and food industry in the media in general and our outlets need as much support as they can get as well. Whilst we are not trading anywhere near pre-COVID levels and we are on reduced seating, there is still plenty of capacity to welcome diners. We also have a program of live entertainment coming in October/November on Fridays and Saturdays so you can enjoy a meal and a drink afterwards in comfort. Shows, Major Events & Functions

These are probably the most impacted part of the club’s services. This time of year is usually bustling with live shows, end of year events like graduations and dance concerts.

Unfortunately at this stage these have had to be cancelled which has affected so many of the local community who come here to celebrate and recognise the achievements of the year. We can only work with what is allowed at the moment. Other major events such as Melbourne Cup, Christmas activities, and New Years Eve all remain up in the air at the moment and we wait to see what we can and can’t offer at the time. Any developments in these areas will be on our website in the coming months.

Local Legends Honoured as Patrons George Piggins and Henry Morris couldn’t be more different in their style. One is a no-nonsense hard man who says it like it is and the other a great mediator who could make things happen by consultation and negotiation. Both achieved great things in all aspects of their careers and have been recognised as Club patrons in both the Junior Rugby League arena and also the licensed club that was formed to provide financial support to the Juniors. Both Henry and George have been members of the Juniors since the mid 1960’s.

George Piggins AM

Patron of the South Sydney District Junior Rugby League George was a Mascot Jets junior who played all his junior football for the famous club. Being in the heartland of the South Sydney district the natural progression was to the South Sydney Rabbitohs where he played 118 games between 1967 – 1978. Playing at Hooker in those days you had to be tough and George certainly fitted the bill.

Later in his career, George played for both New South Wales and Australia in the mid-seventies.

George also coached the club from 1986-1990 and went on to become club chairman after that. The true fighting spirit of George Piggins was evident during the club’s fight for re-inclusion of South Sydney in the NRL. “Never Say Die” was the title of his book detailing the fightback and was the embodiment of his attitude towards maintaining the fight and persistence which lead to victory and South Sydney being re-instated into the competition in 2002. His career in all aspects led to being recognised with an Australian Sports Medal, A Centenary Medal, and also as a member of the Order of Australia for service to Rugby League as an administrator, coach and player, and to the South Sydney community.

Henry Morris OAM

Patron of The Juniors Group of Clubs Henry Morris was another product of the local area. His playing career in the junior league competition began for the now defunct Botany RSL in 1959. Henry also played for La Perouse in the mid 1960’s before moving to Botany United as an administrator. Henry was always devoted to the Junior League and the support of young people in the area playing the game. Ultimately this led to being president of the licensed club at Kingsford for 25 years up until the year 2000. Henry was also President of the Yarra Bay Sailing Club and has received numerous community and national awards all in recognition of his support of sport and the community. The most notable was being awarded the Order of Australia medal on Australia Day 2016. Henry still works with the Men of League foundation and Clubs NSW Eastern Metropolitan Zone. Add to that numerous life memberships including the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Juniors Group of Clubs, it has been a decorated career. The endorsement of patron of the Juniors Group of Clubs was an obvious choice due to the years of loyal service given and was well deserved.

Both George and Henry are two pillars of the South Sydney community and the club is honoured to have them involved in their capacities as patrons. Both embody all the attributes that are in keeping with both organisations’ ethos and values.

The Honourable Lea Drake Lea has been co-opted as a director to fill a casual vacancy created by the resignation of Brian Lane.

Brian has been a diligent servant of the club for over 17 years and has been a vital member of the club’s administration during this time.

Brian’s resignation led to the secondment of Lea Drake onto the Board of Directors until the Annual General Meeting and in doing so also becomes the first female to sit on the Juniors Board of Directors.

Lea’s association with the Juniors started at a young age when she was employed at the club on tray service in the early 70’s whilst studying. That job led to a position at the South Sydney Leagues club in Redfern, keeping things in the South Sydney district.

With marriage and children came a lifelong association with the South Sydney Junior Rugby League competition.

Having 5 children, Lea felt that her three sons should involve themselves in team sport that as well as providing fitness and activity, also builds bonds with other boys in the local area which can develop into lifelong friendships. It was the forming of the South Sydney “family” for the Kelly clan.

Lea’s three boys Ben, Jack & Joe played for various junior teams including Kensington United, Sth Eastern, Mascot and the Coogee Wombats. Jack participated in the Jnr Bunnies Rep Program in the 90’s. With being a footy mum, and with her professional skillset, Lea found herself working on the Junior League Conduct Panel. This was a role in which she volunteered her services for over 15 years. This involvement led to working with the Junior League Department and its staff plus the many club

representatives and volunteers that make up the Junior League extended family.

Lea’s professional experience and community involvement credentials are extensive. Some of the community organisations she has worked with include;

With vast experience in workplace relations, industrial law and member and chairperson of various boards over the years, Lea is a well credentialled member of the Board and someone who has also been in and around the community for many years.

Kingsford has a brand new free car park which is conveniently located right next to our Kingsford club!

Offering 145 car spaces with unlimited parking after 1pm, this new addition to Kingsford is a huge plus for our patrons visiting the club. Located on the corner of Anzac Parade and Rainbow Street, this free car park sits directly to the left of the club and is a short stroll to the front entrance.

The Juniors Kingsford has plenty of parking options available for when you visit the club!

Of course, we still offer our underground car park which is free of charge and open to all members! Open from 9am to 6am every day and with 120 car spaces available, the club car park is a perfect option for all members.

To add convenience to our member’s visits, from Thursday to Sunday, for limited evening hours, we have decided to open a new entrance which is right next to the car park, and directly across the road from the Juniors Kingsford light rail station. This will save members having to walk further down to the main entrance, and add overall ease to those visiting the club from this end of the building.

In addition, the Anzac Parade median carpark is still always an option for you to take advantage of!

The Juniors in The Community The Humour Foundation Imagine a world without smiles, laughter and play. We believe in the therapeutic benefits of humour in improving the health and wellbeing of vulnerable Australians. And, we know that; laughter is the best medicine!

The Humour Foundation is an organisation built on the beliefs that laughter can have a physical effect on the sick and improve overall wellbeing. Research suggests that laughter releases endorphins which in turn lower blood pressure. Laughter has also been directly linked to the improvement of circulation, stimulation of the nervous system, and strengthening the heart amongst other benefits.

Clown Doctors, one of The Humour Foundations four key programs, works to brighten the lives of sick children in hospital by working with medical professionals to distract children during painful procedures, calm and distract them in emergency, and encourage and assist during therapy. Clown Doctors are able to ease the stress of families and hospital staff by assisting in the emotional healing of patients.

The Juniors are proud to support an organisation that brings joy to the young lives that need it most and have donated to Clown Doctors at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick this year through the Club Grants program.

It’s Never Been Easier to Get to The Juniors The new light rail network for Sydney is here, with passenger services now operating on the L3 Kingsford Line between Circular Quay and Kingsford.

The 12km route features 16 stops, extending from Circular Quay along George Street to Central Station, through Surry Hills to Moore Park, then to Kensington and Kingsford via Anzac Parade.

The ‘Juniors Kingsford’ station is located just across the road from our club which means convenience and the opportunity for the wider public to become members and take advantage of the Juniors and all we have to offer. So leave the car at home, hop on board and enjoy the ride right to our front door!

When you join the club you start off as a Base Member, which entitles you to a member’s discount on food and beverages, show tickets and fitness centre. By using your membership card when purchasing the above items as well as playing gaming machines, you earn points.

On a different note, Paul Foley has decided after 51 years of employment at The Juniors that it is now time to hang up his shoes and hand over the responsibility of running the gym to myself. I am looking forward to overcoming these times and creating a family feel and culture at the gym and making a few changes as time rolls on. As a team we wish Paul all the very best in whatever he chooses to do.

As spring and summer are fast approaching we look forward to helping you get back into shape and beach ready.

Loaded omelette - In a bowl, 2 eggs lightly beaten.

Add a couple of chopped spring onions, a couple of large handfuls of baby spinach, a cup of roasted veggies from last nights’ dinner (anything you like, pumpkin, broccoli and mushrooms are great). Mix together and pan fry into an omelette with a light spray of olive oil. Add a couple of spoons of your choice of relish for a punch of flavour.

Short answer is no. But should it be tasty and should it fuel your activities for the day? Absolutely. The importance of your meals is goal dependant. If your goal is weight loss then perhaps consider a low calorie breakfast that is high in protein and fibre that’ll keep you going for hours. Try these:

Banana pancakes - MUST use a blender to

mix all ingredients, do not do this by hand. Into the blender 1 ripe banana, 2 eggs, 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder. Blend until there are no visible chunks of banana.
