The First Snow

A Christmas Affair opens at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20 with a black tie optional Preview Party, The First Snow. Guests will enjoy private shopping, silent auction, delicious cuisine and an open bar. Tickets for this event are $150 per guest. Aspen in Austin

Thursday, November 21 begins with a beautiful brunch that includes three hours of private shopping and a delicious buffet. The Aspen in Austin brunch is from 9 a.m. to noon. All That Glitters!

Girls’ Night Out is Thursday, November 22 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. All That Glitters! will be an experience that you will not want to miss. The wonder of the season continues after A Christmas Affair comes to a close! Decorations from the event will be on sale at the Christmas Affair After Market beginning Friday, December 6 through Sunday, December 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Junior League of Austin Headquarters.

Volunteer Shifts

Active members (including Transfers) are required to work ONE four-hour shift. Provisionals are required to work TWO four-hour shifts in the following areas: Tearoom, Traffic, Coat Check or Auction.

Please bring your JLA badge for entry, and sign in at the volunteer information booth. Be sure to eat before you arrive, and leave your valuables at home. Proper attire for shifts includes a 2013 ACA shirt, a black and white 2013 JLA logo T-shirt, or a solid white shirt with black or khaki pants. Plan your arrival to include time to park offsite at Barton Creek Square. Free shuttle buses will bring you to Palmer Event Center. Parking in the area

BALLET AUSTIN’S COME DANCE! DAY OF DANCE

On August 25, 2013, Ballet Austin hosted its annual “Come Dance!” event during which it opened its doors to the community for a free day of dance. This event encouraged people of all ages to get moving and personally experience how fun dance can be. The community was invited to try one class or dance all day for free.

Over the course of the afternoon, Ballet Austin hosted more than 30 classes. These classes included classical dance, dance fitness and kids’ zone classes for children ages 5-12.

With dance classes ranging from ballet to hula to hip hop to African dance, there was something for everyone. Ballet Austin also provided free parking, refreshments, discounts on class purchases and great giveaways, including season tickets to the 2013-2014 Ballet Austin season at the Long Center for those in attendance.

As a Done-In-A-Day (DIAD) project, The Junior League of Austin volunteers assisted Ballet Austin with the Come Dance! event by greeting attendees, providing tours of the studios and helping guide visitors through the building.

DIAD is a series of concentrated projects that provide assistance to non-profit agencies by offering volunteers for community-based events on a short-term basis. With DIAD, JLA volunteers have the opportunity to work with several agencies over the course of a year on a variety of projects and events.

Austin Summer Musical for Children

By Jennifer Bernier Every summer, Central Texas children get an opportunity to experience live theater because of the Austin Summer Musical for Children (ASMC). ASMC has been providing free theatrical performances for 25 years, and this year Central Texas kids were treated to a production of “Peter Pan and His Lost Shadow.”

A group of volunteers writes, plans and performs these wonderful shows for nearly 1,500 children over the course of 10 performances. Their goal is to contribute to the arts education of children ages 3-10 while opening their eyes to the magical world of theater. Through the Done-In-ADay program, JLA is proud to contribute volunteers for this August event. Volunteers had the opportunity to interact directly with children, actors and stage producers.

Paige Blackorby described a touching moment when a young girl got a special hug from Tinkerbell. “You could see on her face that a big dream just came true. I would volunteer for this program again in a heartbeat.”

Thanks to our JLA volunteers and all the wonderful folks at ASMC, many children got to experience the wonder of live theater.

Blackorby summed it up quite well, “There is nothing more amazing than a child’s imagination, so giving them an outlet to let their imagination soar was quite something to watch.”

The 27th Annual Coats for Kids will take place on December 14, 2013 at the Palmer Events Center located at 900 Barton Springs Road in Austin. The Junior League of Austin works with partners Jack Brown Cleaners, KASE 101 and KVUE-TV to put on this annual event. Last year, more than 2,700 volunteers distributed 32,000 coats to children in Central Texas. Come be a part of one of the largest coat drives in the nation!

Ways to Help

Donations of new or gently used winter coats will be accepted at any Jack Brown Cleaners between Monday, November 18 and Wednesday, December 11. You can also participate in one of our two coat drive competitions: • The Community Coat Drive Competition is for businesses, churches, neighborhoods and other groups or teams.

• The School Coat Drive Competition is for public or private elementary, middle and high schools.

Coat drive competitions begin on Monday, November 18 and end on Friday, December 6.

Teams must transport coats to any local Jack Brown Cleaners for the coats to be cleaned and counted. Winners for each category are selected based on the greatest number of coats collected. Winners will be recognized on KASE 101 on the morning of Wednesday, December 11. Register for a coat drive competition at www.jlaustin.org/coats.

FAMILY DAY AT THE ELIZABET NEY MUSEUM

By Jamie Burchfield Done-In-A-Day projects provide members of The Junior League of Austin a great opportunity to show the strength of women and power of community by assisting non-profit agencies with community-based events. These partnerships allow the League the ability to expand our community outreach by working with groups who need assistance on a short-term basis rather than full-year placements. On June 15, JLA members had the opportunity to do just that during Family Day at the Elizabet Ney Museum.

Elizabet Ney first purchased the property in 1892 and used it as a studio where she sculpted legendary Texans such as Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston, among others. Upon her death in 1907, the studio was preserved as the Elizabet Ney Museum, and friends established the Texas Fine Arts Association in her memory. The Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios. Today, the museum offers a range of educational programs, exhibits, special events, workshops and lectures.

Family Day was a fun day filled with music, jugglers, magicians, face painters, crafts people and sculptors who provided something for every member of the family. The Museum estimates that almost 1,000 people visited during the event, the largest visitation the site has ever had in one day!

Twenty-five JLA volunteers were an integral part of the event, assisting with each of the activities and providing 100 hours of service during the day. Oliver Franklin, museum coordinator, was very grateful for The Junior League volunteers, saying they were tremendously helpful and went above and beyond all expectations.

The Elizabet Ney Family Day was a huge success thanks to the help of our volunteers. The Museum is already planning its next event and hopes to partner with The Junior League of Austin again.

Family: I have a husband, Christopher; a son, Clayton, 20; and a daughter, Grace, 17.

Pets: Too many to count! A black Labrador, a golden Retriever and a ragdoll cat.

I regret: Not living more appreciatively when I was in my 20s and 30s.

My favorite junk food is: Homemade chocolate chip cookies I wish someone had told me earlier: Don’t sweat the small stuff.
