Fulfilling our grandmothers’ dreams

T

his year marks a significant milestone for The Junior League of Austin (JLA) as we celebrate our 90th anniversary. In 1934, 50 visionary women came together and founded the Austin chapter of The Junior League. The world was a vastly different place in 1934. The median annual income for a family was $1,070. A new house was $3,900, a movie ticket cost just 25 cents, and gas was 10 cents per gallon. Only 15 years prior, women had gained the right to vote. Both of my late grandmothers were in their teens and early twenties in the 1930s, working on farms. My paternal grandmother used to fondly recount her travels across California with her sister, picking cherries. She often said it was the first time she truly felt freedom. She settled in Austin in the 1950s, and my family has called this city home ever since. Although my grandmother never became a member of JLA due to working long hours as a nurse to support her husband and six children, I’m convinced that if she were alive today, she would undoubtedly be a member. We are deeply indebted to the extraordinary women who labored tirelessly to secure the freedoms we cherish today. This legacy is evident within The Junior League of Austin. One of our past presidents, Cookie Ruiz, warmly recalls the tenacity of JLA women, “Former JLA member Pam Willeford walked into a bank and said, ‘Will you give this group of women a loan to buy an old La-ZBoy recliner factory and turn it into a strip mall?’ They heard many ‘no’s before they got a ‘yes’.” This anecdote encapsulates the spirit of every woman I’ve encountered in JLA: boundless enthusiasm and steadfast dedication to serving the Austin community-never accepting defeat.

The editor with her grandmother learning a new skill, it reaffirms what I hold most dear about this organization: the opportunity to learn, explore, and empower women. Serving as Capitalines editor during such a momentous time is an honor. Therefore, I dedicate this issue to all the women who paved the way for us—our grandmothers, mothers, past JLA members, and Sustaining Members. Thank you for the enduring impact you’ve made for future generations of women and the Austin community as a whole. With much gratitude,

This optimism to find the good in our fellow members and serving our community fills me with pride to be part of JLA. When I witness a fellow League member attempting something new, especially

Reflecting on 90 years of service

W

elcome to the 90th year of The Junior League of Austin (JLA)! We are delighted to have reached this remarkable milestone, and we eagerly look forward to celebrating it with each and every one of you. As we enter the autumn season, our membership is abuzz with excitement and anticipation. This time of year always brings a surge of energy as we embark on our mission to support our community through our impactful signature programs. Each year Coats for Kids, Food In Tummies (FIT), and Kids In Cool Shoes (KICS) successfully reduce food insecurity among children, provide well-fitting shoes so they can engage in play with their friends, and ensure access

to warm coats during winter. Our members show their unwavering support for over 20 local community-based organizations through volunteer hours and funding. These incredible programs would not be possible without your generous contributions toward our fundraising efforts. Over the past 47 years, The Junior League of Austin has welcomed the holiday season with A Christmas Affair, a cherished tradition that brings our community together in support of JLA’s impactful work. Additionally, each spring, the League hosts Austin Entertains, a culinary event celebrating female chefs, mixologists, and bakers throughout Austin. Furthermore, I invite you all to visit us at our home—the Community Impact Center—an exquisite event venue that hosts more than 50 community events throughout the year. As we gather to commemorate this special anniversary year, let us take a moment to reflect on all that JLA has accomplished over 9 decades. It is through your unwavering dedication and passion for service that we have been able to create lasting change throughout Austin. I want to express my deepest gratitude to both our remarkable community and dedicated members for supporting this incredible organization. Your commitment has played an instrumental role in shaping The Junior League of Austin’s success thus far. I am extremely excited about the upcoming year and the countless opportunities it holds for us to continue making a positive impact in Austin. Wishing you all an exceptionally successful and fulfilling fall season, as well as a joyous holiday season! Sincerely,

Furthering our impact this holiday season

I

t is that time of the year when The Junior League of Austin is at its absolute best. By November we have distributed shoes through our Kids in Cool Shoes (KICS) program to high-need Central Texas schools, delivered hundreds of weekend food bags to Del Valle ISD students, started collecting coats for Coats for Kids and have begun working with our 23 community partners. While the majority of our Active membership is busy volunteering with one of the activities

listed above, there are another 100+ members focused on raising the money needed to fund them. This is where A Christmas Affair (ACA) fits into the puzzle. A Christmas Affair, along with Austin Entertains, are large-scale events that are essential to our mission and collectively require thousands of volunteer hours to orchestrate. A Christmas Affair has become a tradition for many Austinites and is the kickoff to the muchanticipated holiday season. A big thank you is owed to our ACA committee, but we also want to thank each of you who will walk through the doors at the Palmer Event Center or who donate in other ways throughout the year to The Junior League of Austin. In addition to enjoying the merchants and overall experience, you are doing a wonderful thing by helping further our impact. Your ticket, purchase of a signature ornament or cash donation positively benefits many in our much beloved community. Just think– your patronage could be helping us procure the shoes and coats needed for Austin-area children, or it could be providing weekend nourishment to Del Valle ISD students, or helping us further support the missions of our community partners. For this, we are extremely grateful. Thank you again for your support and enjoy the holiday season. Sincerely,

Julie Hall Sustaining President 2023–2024

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow Celebrating the 90th Anniversary of The Junior League of Austin By: Stefanie Davidow

I

n 1934, with 50 Active members, The Junior League of Austin (JLA) was established. That same year, JLA started its first fundraiser and community service program, The Resale Shop. Customers could find gently used clothing and household items donated by women of the League as part of their membership requirements. The store, which was staffed by Provisional members during business hours, was so successful that it outgrew multiple locations over the years.

The Austin community grew exponentially through the years, as did The Junior League of Austin’s membership. JLA’s first headquarters (HQ) were in the Gatehouse on the grounds of the Laguna Gloria Museum in 1960. In 1974, HQ was moved to the same building as the thrift shop on East Sixth Street. In 1983, JLA purchased the Square on Parkcrest, a retail shopping center that would eventually house all JLA operations as well as other high-end retailers. “This move was wildly progressive for the time,” Sustaining member Cookie Ruiz recalls fondly.

“We did all our bookkeeping in journals and ledgers. The move to computers was in its infancy.”

Among many other roles, Ruiz served as JLA President from 1995 to 1996. During her presidency, she signed the mortgage payoff check for the Square on Parkcrest, which meant every dollar that came into JLA could be given back to the

community because the rent collected from retail tenants covered other administrative costs. Sustainer Cindy Kozmetsky recalls the technological transition to computers in the mid-1980s when she served as JLA Treasure-Elect and Treasurer. “We did all our bookkeeping in journals and ledgers. The move to computers was in its infancy,” she said. Eventually, JLA membership outgrew the shopping center. After 35 years on Parkcrest Drive, The Junior League of Austin made the courageous decision to sell the retail space to kickstart a capital fundraising campaign for something even bigger. Land in Northwest Austin was purchased in 2010, and a groundbreaking ceremony took place in January 2018. The years in between involved lots of planning and fundraising to envision a new home that would serve the needs of the organization, as well as the people of Austin. Thanks to generous donations from community partners, Sustaining and Active members, and other JLA allies, the Community Impact Center (CIC) opened in 2019. The first General Meeting in the new building was held in September 2019. Six-hundred people attended, a number previous JLA headquarters could not have accommodated. As part of the official grand opening celebrations, Mayor Steve Adler declared Oct. 17, 2019, to be The Junior League of Austin Community Impact Center Day. ⁣

TODAY A few short months after the CIC opened, the global COVID-19 pandemic forced the CIC to close. When stayat-home orders went into place in March 2020, JLA Members got creative and figured out how to continue serving a population that needed JLA more than ever. They sent out member and community surveys and conducted extensive research. Many of the creative solutions they came up with during that time still benefit JLA programs today. Here are some of the ways JLA pivoted its programs and continued to make an impact: After 24 years of operating from the Palmer Event Center, Coats for Kids—JLA’s signature program that brings more than 30,000 warm winter coats to children in need— moved to the CIC. The funds that would have gone to renting the event space have allowed for the purchase of additional coats every year since. Coat sorting now happens in the CIC parking garage, which during the height of COVID-19, allowed for safe social distancing. In 2022, with the help of partners, volunteers, and community members, JLA donated its 1 millionth coat through this program. 14 The Junior League of Austin

A Christmas Affair (ACA), JLA’s primary fundraising event that brings in more than $1 million during a four-day holiday market each year, moved to a fully virtual format in 2020. Creative solutions included at-home cocktail kits for Girl’s Night Out and Zoom dance parties for children. During the pandemic, JLA also gained insights into managing virtual marketplaces until they could return to the Palmer Events Center. Volunteers for Food In Tummies, JLA’s signature program that provides weekend nourishment to elementary-age students in Del Valle ISD, organized food bags at a spread-out distance in the CIC Ballroom and distributed the bags to families while school was in session, whether classes were hybrid or fully remote. Even after stay-at-home orders were lifted, JLA Members tirelessly jumped back into in-person formats and continued to trailblaze. Since 2017, Austin Entertains, a delicious and fun evening that highlights women in Austin’s food and beverage industry, has been JLA’s spring fundraiser. Proceeds from this event help fund The Junior League of Austin’s signature programs. JLA’s newest signature program, Kids In Cool Shoes (KICS), was founded in 2018 to provide new shoes to young kids in high-need areas of Central Texas. KICS is another example of JLA adapting to the needs of the community. JLA continues to grow alongside Austin, which is ranked as the 10th most populous city in the United States. In 2022, JLA proudly elected its first black President, Shannon Creekmur. The City of Austin declared Aug. 31 as Shannon Creekmur Day in honor of her role as the first Black president of The Junior League of Austin. Mark your calendars for our official 90th year celebration! The Spring Soiree will include a night of cocktails, a walk through our history and fun entertainment at the CIC. See you on April 10, 2024.

TOMORROW As JLA enters its nonagenarian era, the organization is more than 2,300 members strong with a revitalized appreciation for in-person fellowship and collaboration. With life returning to a new normal, The Junior League of Austin and the CIC are uniquely positioned to serve as resources to the community. With a space people love, The Junior League of Austin is ready to open its doors to the next 90 years.

The Next 90 years | IMPACT

The Next 90 Years We asked our members what they think the future holds for JLA By: Jenn Wilson

I

f we could gather the fifty women who united back in 1934 and ask them to envision The Junior League of Austin in 90 years, I wonder what they would say. Would they have foreseen the emergence of The Junior League of Austin’s Community Impact Center, the success and enduring tradition of A Christmas Affair, and generations of women chasing their aspirations while aiding others in the Austin community? We posed this question to today’s JLA members to hear their thoughts on what the future may hold for The Junior League of Austin and its members. Here’s what they had to say:

“I hope that Austin residents all over the city know, love, and respect the work The Junior League of Austin does…that the majority of Austin nonprofits have JLA representation on their boards…that young women are counting down the days to their 25th birthday so they can be a part of JLA’s impact on the city.”

“We’ve had League members serve on City Council (Vanessa Fuentes) and as Mayor (Carole Keeton Rylander); it would be cool to see a member (past or present or future!) become Governor!” –Rekha Roarty, Active member

– Jenny Green Kujawa, Active member

“I’m now a Sustainer and my sister Jacqueline Burns is an Active member. My daughter Libby came to help me set up for an admissions event at the CIC. One of the things that I love about the League is welcoming our kids to help and providing opportunities to give back. Libby helped run a Coats For Kids coat drive through her Girl Scout troop and service unit. The Kids Giving Back events are great for cultivating the future of the League.” – Melissa Hargis, Sustaining member The Junior League of Austin 19

Visions for the Community Impact Center

lose your eyes and imagine planning an event that goes off without a hitch. The event takes place in a dynamic and breathtaking space. Your guests can do nothing but gush about the whole experience and you surpass your event goals with flying colors. Now no event runs perfectly, but these are the sentiments and feedback we get back from clients who rent The Junior League of Austin’s (JLA) Community Impact Center (CIC). The purpose of the CIC is to support local organizations and individuals who are looking for a high-quality event space that offers flexibility and accessibility at a competitive rate. When planning the building’s development, members from our community and the JLA imagined this space would create a collaborative environment for League members to meet and plan events that bolster the community, and a space where other philanthropic organizations could host events. The CIC is a 10,000 square foot modern space with beautifully designed rooms of various sizes, where you can

host large events such as fundraising galas, birthday or holiday parties, and corporate summits. Clients can also host smaller events, such as business meetings and other recurring activities. Understanding all the options the CIC has to offer can help take the guesswork out of planning an event. Rooms vary in size from 41’ x 29.5’ (which can fit six 72” round tables or 60 chairs in a theater-style setup) to

121’ x 60’ (which can fit up to forty 72” round tables or 450 chairs in a theaterstyle setup). These rooms are equipped with amenities like high-speed internet and A/V systems. During each event, a JLA volunteer event liaison is on site to support guests.

Members from our community and the JLA imagined this space would create a collaborative environment for League members [...] and a space where other philanthropic organizations could host events.

The JLA hopes that the CIC can continue to better the community and local organizations. Revenue from CIC rentals allows the JLA to support both its Signature Impact programs and diverse community partners. The impact of both addresses many

socioeconomic challenges in Central Texas. We invite you to collaborate on your next event at the CIC. Go ahead: close your eyes and envision an amazing event. The League Revamps Recruitment

I

f you attended the General Meeting in September, you might have noticed some fresh faces sporting cute pink buttons. These individuals are prospective Members, also known as potential new members (PNMs). This is part of The Junior League of Austin’s (JLA) new recruitment initiative for this year. Last year, the Membership VP conducted an in-depth analysis of JLA’s new member statistics and identified some concerning trends in the data. Over the past few years, the number of people filling out the interest form had increased, yet the size of JLA’s provisional class had decreased. “Haley and I put our heads together and decided that our admissions process wasn’t serving us as a League,” says Sarah Gutierrez, Recruitment Chair. “We decided to take a totally new approach this year. Instead of two events, the fall open house and January mandatory meeting, we are doing a series of events. The recruitment initiative is an effort to engage prospective members earlier and more often with The Junior League of Austin. The recruitment committee conducted their first virtual info session in August and another one in late September. In addition to the info sessions, the recruitment team is inviting PNMs to other JLA events so they can experience the League before they join. PNMs have attended small informational sessions at the Community Impact Center, virtual info sessions, the September General Meeting, and

participated in the Find the Good Day event at Kendra Scott. This fall, they aim to host an October social event, collaborate with Kids Giving Back on Trunk or Treat, and involve PNMs with Coats for Kids. In previous years, recruitment applications were sent out in February after the January mandatory meeting. With the new format, The Junior League of Austin has a rolling application process. After someone attends an event, whether it’s an info session or a social event, they will receive an application for admission for the fall. In addition to regular emails about events, the Admissions team has created a monthly newsletter with information about upcoming events for PNMs and other League updates. The team has expanded the distribution list as well. In past years, they only reached out to those on that year’s membership interest form, but this year they have included people who joined the interest form in the past three years, but didn’t join.

“The feedback has been fantastic!” Gutierrez said. “We had almost 50 people at our first two events. Our first round of applications will go out in the next few weeks, so we are excited to see the response. We are still early in the process, but I’m hopeful that increased engagement will lead to a larger provisional class next year. In addition to increasing numbers, one of our main goals is to build stronger connections with our PNMs so they feel more integrated into JLA as Members.” The recruitment initiative is designed to attract potential and interested new members and involve them earlier and throughout the year. The recruitment committee’s goal is to capture their enthusiasm now and help recruit new members who would otherwise have to wait until spring to learn about the League. If you spot a new face with a pink button at the next General Meeting, Coats for Kids, or any other event, introduce yourself, share what you love about JLA, and tell them how excited you are to have them here.

Training the Next Generation of JLA

he first day of school can conjure images of freshly sharpened pencils, crisp blank notebooks, and untouched rainbows of crayons. But for some local students and their families, the need for new school supplies is more of a stressor than a joy. That’s why for the past three years, The Junior League of Austin has partnered with Austin Infiniti to collect and donate school supplies to Baty and Hillcrest Elementary Schools in Del Valle ISD. Beyond strengthening JLA’s ties with the campuses that participate in the signature Food In Tummies (FIT) program, this annual supply drive is an opportunity for League members’ children to learn about community service firsthand as part of our Kids Giving Back program. “I felt it was an excellent opportunity to plant the seed of volunteerism early. I remember volunteering with my grandma and mother, so it’s always been a part of my life,” said Sustainer Jennifer McKeon, who brought her two young daughters to the donation sorting event on Aug. 5. That Saturday morning, kids worked alongside their moms at JLA’s Community Impact Center (CIC) to organize school supplies before carefully counting the items to be divided between the two recipient schools. The donations totaled more than 5,500 items—enough to fill an Infiniti QX60 SUV at Austin Infiniti, according to the dealership’s event coordinator Lisa Litchfield.

have those simple supplies to start the year off with.” Kids Giving Back aims to organize a volunteer event for the kiddos of JLA Members each month, with a focus on supporting JLA’s signature programs and community partners beyond what membership already provides. Previous volunteer opportunities include assembling “homeless helper” bags for Mobile Loaves and Fishes, a summer reading book collection for BookSpring, and an “Adopt-a-Child” holiday gift drive with Kids In Cool Shoes (KICS) for Mainspring Schools. It’s a way to support the Austin community and also think about membership development in the long term, said Lindsay Cardoso, chair of Kids Giving Back. “It’s close to my heart—not only because I’m a mom—but I believe that when you instill the spirit of volunteerism at a young age, that’s something that will stay with you your entire life,” she said. “I started volunteering when I was 5 or 6 years old. My great-grandmother said that what we may lack in resources, we can make up for in time and energy.” Who knows? Perhaps today’s littlest volunteers will be tomorrow’s leaders of JLA. With regular practice at Kids Giving Back events, that’s the hope.

JLA’s partnership with Austin Infiniti developed because Genny Hill, owner of Continental Automotive Group, served on the JLA Board of Directors. Throughout July, the dealership collects donations from customers and employees on site. Donations were also collected at the CIC. Volunteers dropped off the sorted donations at the schools on Aug. 7, and most of the supplies were distributed at Meet the Teacher Day, before classes even began. “It’s a huge need here, especially at our school,” said Eva Rodriguez, the parent-community liaison at Baty. “You have no idea what a difference it makes in our kids’ lives just to

Helping Sustainers Start the Next Chapter of Their League Story

A

By: Rebecca Bennett

fter her 40th birthday and at least 3 years of service as an Active member in good standing, a JLA member can choose to become a Sustainer, joining the ranks of nearly 1,300 Sustainers in The Junior League of Austin. But that doesn’t mean she’s “retired” from enjoying her involvement with the League and its benefits. “There are a lot of opportunities for Sustainers, without the responsibilities,” said Rachel Plymire, Sustainer Engagement Chair. To help newly minted Sustainers transition gracefully into their next chapter, the Sustainer Engagement Committee hosted a Sustainer 101 training in September. This event was an opportunity to highlight the ways in which Sustainers can remain engaged with the League, from Done-in-a-Day shifts and Training & Education events to Sustainer socials and Sustaining Advisor positions.

to touch base with their mentees throughout the League year, helping them navigate their commitments, consider placement options, and expand their JLA network. Sustainers interested in serving as a mentor can email sustainerchair@jlaustin.org. With another Sustainer Advisor informational meeting in the works for spring of 2024—and opportunities to participate in a tour of the Food In Tummies (FIT) pantry, volunteer in a Sustainer-only Coats for Kids (CFK) shift, and join an interest-specific gathering group—it’s clear that a Sustainer’s League story is far from over.

Across JLA, there are more than 100 spots for Sustaining Advisors, who can opt to attend committee meetings and provide ideas or feedback to Active members. “We want to engage Sustainers in a way where they still get ample training opportunities and can utilize their vast experiences and untapped knowledge, whether they were in JLA or another Junior League,” Plymire said.

This year, Sustainer Engagement is piloting a mentorship program between Sustainers and first-year Active members. “Active members go from this fun, everyone-is-togetherall-the-time experience as a Provisional to a community placement where you’re still volunteering, but you might not feel as connected to other members,” Plymire said. “We thought it would be great to have Sustainers introduce their mentees to other people in the room at General Meetings and build their community.” In this low-commitment program, mentors are encouraged

he Provisional class comprises the newest members of The Junior League of Austin. This year’s Provisional (new member) class theme is “Energy Speaks Volumes,” anchored in the color yellow to align with The Junior League of Austin (JLA) core color palette.

While the Provisional activities focus on the foundational key pillars, including community, communication, fund development, membership, and administration, this year they also include thinking outside the box to establish points of connection with all types of members throughout the year.

“Member Emily Rice designed our logo to capture the warm and ambiguous feeling emulated as a Provisional as one assimilates into The Junior League of Austin,” said Provisional Chair, Jennifer Kalinowski. “Every woman has her own unique energy – loud, quiet, electric, stabilizing – but most importantly, personal energy can bring change and goodness to philanthropic endeavors. Volunteering is its own energy and Provisionals breathe new energy into The Junior League of Austin.”

“Provisionals have the biggest hearts to make a difference,” Kalinowski said. Only a few months into the year, the Provisional class is already going above and beyond in their League service. They’re bringing their

The Provisional class is the heartbeat of the League, bringing fresh perspectives to help JLA grow with our surrounding city. Kalinowski hopes that the Provisional class maximizes

the opportunities provided to them this year, finds their niche in volunteer interest, and feels empowered to continue their volunteerism in The Junior League of Austin for years to come. Welcome, class of 2023–24! From all the Active and Sustaining League members, we are so excited you are here!

Unique to this year, all groups are named after Active members from Kalinowski’s Provisional class, under the leadership of Carrie Semple. These women have become active leaders over the past eight years both in JLA and the community. Strengthening the Community Through Serving Local Nonprofits Foster Angels of Central Texas and Texas Performing Arts join JLA’s roster of community projects for 2023–2024.

T

By: Rekha Roarty

he Junior League of Austin (JLA) prides itself on providing volunteers and funding to support local nonprofit agencies. For the 2023– 24 JLA year, JLA will provide over 100,000 volunteer hours to the community through service to nonprofits and other community projects. The League strives to serve a wide variety of nonprofits, and every year, new nonprofits are added to the roster of organizations served. “All 23 of our current community partners are listed on our website with the number of volunteers placed there,” explains JLA Community Vice President Shelley Davis. This year, Foster Angels of Central Texas and Texas Performing Arts became the two newest JLA community partners. “We’re thrilled to be teaming up with Foster Angels of Central Texas as a new community partner!” said Erika Albert, JLA’s Foster Angels of Central Texas 2023–24 Project Chair. “While this is their first year as a community partner, the organization has many ties to the League. Executive Director Tania Leskovar-Owens was JLA’s president from 2021–22, and Maggie Sheppard, their Communications Director, is also an active member of The Junior League of Austin. We’re looking forward to assisting Foster Angels of Central Texas in fulfilling ongoing daily needs and life-enriching requests for children in the foster care system throughout the year.” Foster Angels of Central Texas (FACT) aims to improve the lives of children in foster care by ensuring each child has their basic needs met and providing the children with life-enriching opportunities. FACT focuses on three main areas: 1) basic needs; 2) activities, camps, and special occasions; and 3) supporting youths aging out of foster care. JLA is thrilled to be a part of FACT’s mission serving these children.

34 The Junior League of Austin

Erika Albert helps with distributing backpacks filled with school supplies for the Foster Angels of Central Texas drive. FACT volunteers can also concentrate their volunteer hours during the summer months to help FACT prepare for the busy back-to-school season. Albert was one of many summer volunteers this past summer. “We worked to distribute backpacks to kids in foster care,” she described. FACT’s signature backpack drive program works to ensure that local children in foster care start the school year with a new backpack filled with the school essentials as well as gift cards so that the kids can choose their own supplies. “Additionally, we can’t wait for Toys for Teens, where

JLA members at Bass Concert Hall, where they volunteer with Texas Performing Arts. we will be able to help make holiday dreams come true for hundreds of youth in the greater Central Texas area!” commented Albert. Toys for Teens ensures that teens in the foster care system who would not normally receive holiday gifts receive unique presents tailored to their interests. This project is especially critical as many Christmas present drives are focused on children. Toys for Teens makes sure teenagers in foster care are not forgotten during the holiday season. Texas Performing Arts is another nonprofit served by the League this year. “We’re excited to begin working with Texas Performing Arts as a new community partner for 2023!” said Shelly Heflin, JLA Project Chair for Texas Performing Arts. “Texas Performing Arts offers a diverse season of music, theater, dance, comedy, and conversation, and is also the proud home of Broadway in Austin. Partnering with them provides JLA volunteers an opportunity to support arts and education in our community, not to mention getting to see some truly spectacular entertainment while volunteering.”

Partnering with [Texas Performing Arts] provides JLA volunteers an opportunity to support arts and education in our community.

JLA members serving with Texas Performing Arts enjoy the added benefit of being able to attend some of the shows and therefore see the direct result of their volunteer work. The volunteers’ primary goal is to ensure attendees have a fantastic experience by greeting guests, handing out programs, and assisting patrons when finding their seats. Haley Gardiner, President of The Junior League of Austin, looks forward to a lasting partnership with both nonprofits. “We hope this year is just the beginning of a long partnership with Texas Performing Arts and Foster Angels of Central Texas as we strive to continue serving our community.” The Junior League of Austin 35

A Christmas Affair holds a special place in my heart, as I’m sure it does for many of you. The traditions that each of you bring to this holiday shopping extravaganza make it memorable and everlasting. In fact, my connection to A Christmas Affair runs deep, as my grandmother was part of the very first committee at The Driskill Hotel. My personal journey with ACA took off in 1990 when I was just 2 years old, accompanying my mother who was on the committee. I still vividly recall the round and green roof of the Palmer Events Center back then. Photo by: Jenny DeMarco Being a native Austinite, I have witnessed the incredible growth of this event over the years. We owe so much of its success to our generous sponsors, The Junior League of Austin volunteers, members, and patrons. Without their continued support, A Christmas Affair would not be the magnificent experience it is today and to the Austin community. I must acknowledge that this holiday shopping tradition would not be possible without the dedication and hard work of our 84 Cosmic Committee members, who have volunteered countless hours to make this event a reality. Thank you for your stellar support. You’re all the brightest stars in my sky! I extend my deepest gratitude to my family, and husband, for their support and encouragement during the many late nights and hours I was away from home, preparing for Austin’s signature shopping event.
