I’ve always been a believer that when women support and lift each other up, incredible things happen.

The Junior League of Austin (JLA) exemplifies this spirit, and as a result, our fall issue of Capitalines recognizes some of the enthusiasm and passion that radiates throughout our organization and the Central Texas communities we serve.

With a membership of 2,382 unique women who share a like-minded drive for service, our members demonstrate what it means to be both exceptional and intentional, as 80% of these women regularly balance volunteer opportunities with full-time jobs, families, and other commitments.

Our chapter of the Association of Junior League Internationals, Inc. (AJLI) is the fifth largest in the world. Run by volunteers and four amazing staff, our teams compassionately contribute an estimated 160,000 hours collectively each year, working to host five signature programs, and directly support more than 20 other non-profit organizations.

An estimated 1,000 children are fed each weekend throughout the school year because of our Food in Tummies (FIT) program. A longstanding tradition within the Austin community, more than 30,000 people attend our A Christmas Affair (ACA) market, as we work to raise money for other signature events and programs.

Several milestones are happening this year, including plans for Coats for Kids to give away its millionth coat. Another important aspect of our organization — meaningful connections and friendship — is also celebrated as we return to more in-person events and programs, following 2 years of resilience and distancing through mostly virtual events and masking.

Not only that, but we thank our partners and sponsors within the community — all of whom help make our programs and services possible.

PRESIDENT Welcome to the fall issue of Capitalines! It is my honor and privilege to serve as the 2022-2023 President and continue a legacy of service. Since 1934, The Junior League of Austin (JLA) has served the Austin community through our mission of promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. With close to 2,400 members, we aim to create a lasting, meaningful impact through our signature programs and community partnerships.

The work of JLA never stops, and our members are in full swing with their volunteer placement roles.

This year we are:

•

Partnering with 24 community agencies, ready to serve alongside one another and return to in-person placements.

•

Excited for the 47th A Christmas Affair (ACA), “Night of the Nutcracker.” ACA is our largest fundraiser and the vehicle by which we raise necessary funds to support our signature programs and the Austin community.

•

Ready to collect coats for Coats for Kids (CFK); winter is already on our minds! Our new distribution model allows us to double the number of out-the door-coats distributed to Austin families.

•

Operating our Food in Tummies (FIT) program to ensure 1,000 kids at Baty and Hillcrest Elementary schools receive their weekend backpacks of nutritious food.

•

Serving the community through the Kids in Cool Shoes (KICS) and Done-in-a-Day programs.

•

Gearing up to celebrate and support women in the culinary industry with Austin Entertains in Spring 2023.

We could not serve the Austin community without our motivated members. In keeping with my theme “Believe in Your Sparkle and Shine,” I’ve challenged our members to tap into the “unique” contribution that they make to JLA. We represent a diverse range of lived experiences and backgrounds, and I am so thankful for each member sharing their sparkle with the Junior League. We may all sparkle differently, but together, we shine brighter. I am elated to serve among these strong, talented, and dedicated women in this phenomenal organization.

SUSTAININ G PR E S I D E N T Grit and resilience have powered The Junior League of Austin through nearly 90 years in operation. The last several years are yet another testament that our members will thrive despite unknown and ever-changing circumstances, remaining steadfast as a mission-based organization committed to improving our community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Our purpose’s impacts are immeasurable, considering the individual development that our members gain through service and the benefits of more than 100,000 hours of active voluntarism and significant financial contributions to nonprofits each year.

This League year returns with more in-person events utilizing our own Community Impact Center for membership and community programs. The distance and strain that our remote/hybrid approach

created will be replaced with focus on member engagement —

fostering an inclusive environment that demonstrates we are better together — and continued progress on our community work. As any League year goes, we will respond and rally for what is ahead.

Without our steadfast supporters, this organization could not deliver upon what is needed in Central Texas. And our sustaining membership — 1,200 and counting — are some of our best advocates, counselors, and supporters. Sustaining members are gifts to the organization — supporting our membership with their current roadmap, helping guide for future plans, and continuously evolving along the way.

I am honored to serve as Sustaining President and work alongside this year’s Board of Directors to continue our vision of strengthening our community through creative solutions to current and future challenges. WO M EN IN T H E L E AG UE OVERACHIEVING, PASSIONATE, AND DRIVEN

BY STEPHANIE POTTER From the boardroom, the courtroom, the classroom and everywhere in between — across Central Texas, members of The Junior League of Austin (JLA) are modeling what passionate, driven women can accomplish. In addition to the 160,000 volunteer hours that JLA members serve each year, more than 80% of our members work outside of the home, with hundreds of these women considered stars in their fields.

MEDICAL PROFESSION & TEACHING

When one thinks of professionals who have the time to volunteer, doctors are probably not at the top of the list. But Aisha White has never been hemmed in by expectations.

White is a board-certified plastic surgeon with an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She sought out the business degree between her third and fourth years of medical school, and it exposed her to people with varied life experiences. That exposure later attracted her to JLA because she wanted to find varied volunteer opportunities that were not limited to the medical field. When she moved to Texas for a job with a plastic surgery group in 2012, she joined JLA and now loves “having a community of women who support you.” White appreciates that JLA has flexible volunteer opportunities that are available at all hours, such as FIT shifts, so she can volunteer even with a rigorous surgical schedule.

White has three jobs, one of which is her own surgical practice, Quintessence, where she focuses on reconstructive surgery for breast cancer survivors.

Her second job is as Medical Director at Viva Day Spa, where she performs aesthetic services like injectables. Her third job is Medical Director at Synergy, where she focuses on cosmetic surgery.

In addition to those roles, White is a faculty member at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin, where she chairs the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Along with being a Sustaining member of JLA, she sits on the boards of non-profit organizations Ballet Austin and Vivent Health (formerly AIDS Services of Austin). She recognizes parallels between her volunteer work, which is aimed at empowering women — especially women of color — and her professional work, which is far more than skin deep.

“Plastic surgery can empower people. My patients say they finally feel comfortable in their own skin. Empowering women has become a driving force in my life,” says White.

MARKETING & ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Sustaining member Suzanne Brown is a marketing entrepreneur who owns OKsuzi Strategy, which helps business leaders make better marketing decisions. She also launched Mompowerment, a workplace consulting group, which helps companies become more balance-friendly and helps working moms create more balance in their lives.

Brown is a professional speaker — she gave a TED Talk in 2016 — and an award-winning author, with two books in her Mompowerment series available on Amazon. Her writing has also been featured in publications, such as the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Real Simple, and Shape. She actively lives the principles that she speaks about professionally, balancing her roles as owner of two businesses, mother of two sons, wife, and volunteer.

How does Brown feel about having it all? She has built the kind of life she counsels other women to shape for themselves.

“No two days are the same,” she laughs. “I’m deeply appreciative I get to carve out time for things I’m passionate about and be an active, engaged mom.”

LEGAL & GOVERNMENT Sustaining member Mindy Montford has spent much of her nearly 25year legal career in the criminal justice system, starting at the Harris County District Attorney’s office then moving to the Travis County District Attorney’s office and joining JLA. After almost 9 years with the DA — during which she served 8 years as an active member of JLA — she opened her own criminal defense and family law firm in 2008. She returned to the Travis County DA’s office in 2017, reaching the second-in-command position of First District Attorney.

More recently, in 2021, she made another exciting move. She now serves as Senior Counsel to the Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit of the Texas Attorney General, a brand-new unit the AG launched to support local law enforcement across the state as they investigate long-unsolved crimes. In one recent success story, the unit found a woman who had been missing since she was a baby. Her biological family had not seen her since 1980, and they thanked Montford specifically for helping them.

“Bringing some form of closure to the families was such a joy to witness,” says Montford, who is one of many practicing attorneys in JLA.

POWER IN YOUR PLACEMENT: CAREER POST-VOLUNTEERISM POWER IN YOUR PLACEMENT: CAREEROPPORTUNITIES OPPORTUNITIES POST-VOLUNTEERISM Each year, The Junior League of Austin members have the opportunity to choose between more than 1,100 placements. In some cases, these new experiences lead to career growth, including that of Kathi Haralson, who spent years as a self-described “serial volunteer” outside the paid workforce, also serving as JLA President in 2009-2010.

Her leadership experience at JLA empowered her to delve into development professionally.

“League training gave me confidence,” says Haralson, who took that experience to recognize a non-profit job opportunity, seize it, and launch a new career. She started as the first-ever Development Director at Partnerships for Children, then “never looked back.”

Haralson is now the Executive Director of Pop-Up Birthday, a current JLA community partner, and a charity that provides birthday boxes for children in foster care who otherwise would not be celebrated. She speaks passionately of the mission, saying the boxes represent so much more than just a birthday party. “They recognize the children’s lives and importance.”

We are pleased to welcome 180 new and dedicated members. Over the course of 10 months, our provisional members will each spend more than 35 hours volunteering with our Food In Tummies (FIT) program. Between 17,000 and 34,000 backpacks will be packed and distributed with care to students at both Hillcrest Elementary and Baty Elementary within Del Valle ISD. The program, now in its 13th year, aims to combat food insecurity, as it’s estimated that 88.9% of students in Del Valle ISD are food insecure, which can lead to decreased cognitive and physical health, making it harder for children to concentrate and learn in school.

BECOM E A MEMBER: INFO RM ATI O N S E S S I O NS I N JA N UA RY Joining The Junior League of Austin is incredibly easy and inclusive! Membership is open to all women, ages 25 to 40, within the Austin metropolitan area. The only requirement is to attend an informational session in January and then fill out a brief application, which is followed by membership acceptance. You’ll pay dues by April 1, 2023, and then our provisional classes begin meeting each July to start off each new League year.

COATS FOR KIDS ON TRACK FOR MILESTONE

BY BRITNI RACHAL “We’ve gotten feedback from people in tears saying it’s so much easier and discrete for them to drive through the CIC to collect a coat,” says JLA member and volunteer Jenn Wilson.

Because of the changes, some sizes are in greater demand than ever before.

Based on last year’s interest, youth sizes 6, 7, and 8 are in the highest need.

Coats for Kids now has a reach more than double its previous impact. Before 2020, our teams — which include partnerships with Jack Brown Cleaners, KVUE, iHeartRadio, along with community volunteers — gave away around 15,000 coats each year at the annual Distribution Day. Now, through varied and independent distributions, we are on track to give away 30,000 coats annually. Going on 3 years of a modified process, rather than having people show up at Palmer Events Center on Distribution Day, schools reach out and place orders for delivery, asking for specific sizes. This accounts for around 9,000 coats within Austin Independent School District, 3,300 within Del Valle Independent School District, and 2,000 in charter schools, on top of an additional thousands of coats via generic community distribution.

After celebrating the 35th year last year, another milestone is on the horizon for Coats for Kids, as the team expects to give away its millionth coat this year!

“With a goal of giving away 30,000 coats this year, when the team hits the 28,000 mark — that will account for the millionth coat,” says Coats for Kids Chair, Kate Rhodes.

Anyone not part of a school district can request a coat online and then drive through The Junior League of Austin Community Impact Center (CIC) parking garage on our modified Distribution Day.

It now offers a full year of Spanish classes to better hone skills, and ¡Si! students can attend the classes at various levels, from beginner to advanced/ conversational.

Other JLA Active and Sustaining members can also sign up and pay their own way outside of any placement. Arriaga says she has 30 to 40 students at any given time, and almost all of

SUSTAINER INVESTMENT CLUB: WOMEN IN THE MARKET On the third Friday of each month, you can find a group of 26 Sustaining members at The Junior League of Austin’s Community Impact Center (CIC) focusing on a $250,000 investment portfolio with about 20 stocks.

The Women in the Market group was formed in 1996. Partners within the group have come and gone throughout the years, but two founding members still actively participate.

Each partner has a monetary share of stocks within the fund proportionate to the length of time of their quarterly dues contribution.

“Our intent is to be education-oriented and social,” says organizer Mary Scherer. “No one is using this as a retirement or to live off of, but it’s great to share knowledge, risk, and reward in this crazy stock market frenzy.”

THE JUNIOR LEAGUE: THEN VS. NOW The year is 1963, and Peggi Purcell is beginning the process to join The Junior League of Reading, Pa. “You had to have six secret sponsors. You weren’t allowed to know who they were,” explains Purcell. “Some people found out, and they had to drop the invite because it wasn’t a secret.”

We’re proud to say today almost 60 years later, our modernized collective League cultures across the United States are much more inclusive. For example, here in Austin, you don’t need any sponsorships or recommendations to join. Across the board, life for women is also at improved heights. But one thing is still the same: the Association of Junior Leagues International serves as a “training organization for women” — a way to grow and advance, while connecting and collaborating with like-minded women.

Purcell earned her master’s degree in history and completed her provisional League year in Tucson, Ariz., complementing her education with her League placement as a tour guide at Fort Lowell. Then, in 1966, she became the first woman to be admitted into the University of Arizona history Ph.D. program. With only 10 spots in the entire program, people questioned, “Why should a spot be given to a woman when it could go to a man who would do this for the rest of his life?”

When Purcell began a brief career as a teacher, she was one of only six women in the Tucson chapter with a fulltime job.

“We were treated like the minority,” says Purcell. “Now it’s totally different — most people assume you are working. That’s a really big change within the League.”

“You were expected to give back to your community when you graduated college. People expected you to get a husband and not be independent. You supported your husband totally, and what he wanted is what you wanted.”

Fortunately for Purcell, she often did focus on what she wanted. In the 1970s, she earned a second

undergraduate degree — this time in interior design.

She had found her passion and went on to work at Louis Shanks for 25 years. She also still owns her own interior design business today.

“Women are now able to reach their full capabilities and potential which is marvelous,” says Purcell. “I love seeing the glass ceilings broken, and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be.”

Purcell enjoys being a sustaining member of The Junior League of Austin, a group of women over the age of 45. Through her membership in Austin since 1982, she’s enjoyed book clubs, garden clubs, investment clubs, and dozens of other social events where she’s met lifelong friends.

Her advice to help incoming members find their own sparkle: “Follow your dreams and listen to your inner voice.”

Through our partnerships with 24 organizations, an estimated 160,000 collective community service hours are completed among The Junior League of Austin members each year. The results are beneficial for all; for example, a two-decade-long study in The Journal of Happines found that people who volunteer are generally happier and have an overall better sense of well-being and satisfaction within their lives.

THE SETTLEMENT HOME FOR CHILDREN Helping children who suffer from emotional trauma, abuse, and neglect is the mission behind The Settlement Home for Children. JLA members attend weekly Run Club practices and help with local 5K community events.

Mentorship is at the center of this partnership that’s been sprinting stronger each year since 2011.

Having fun through year-round Training & Education programs, JLA members learn and develop new hobbies and skills, which often includes things like perfecting Warrior 2 poses, mastering the art of flower arranging, expanding spreadsheet proficiency, throwing axes like an Amazonian, or honing financial savvy.

Whether for entertainment or enhancing leadership skills, Training & Education classes are a favorite among members.

with Elevate Bartending was fun. We learned how to make two fun new cocktails. Hair braiding, learning to make a terrarium, and Valentine’s Day cookie decorating were a few other favorites.”

FROM COOKIE CLASS TO KRISTIN’S KOOKIE’S ATX A February 2022 Training & Education event turned into entrepreneurial endeavors this year for Sustaining member Kristin Harper. Following the class, she started her own business. Now, within only 7 months, she has dozens of clients.

“I always loved cookies. I admired decorated cookies and played some with it but didn’t feel I was artistic.

This class gave me the chance to realize I can create art. Each cookie has been another opportunity to take a risk and improve,” says Harper.

OVERCOMING PANDEMIC-RELATED OBSTACLES

After 2 years of operating in a hybrid — but mostly virtual — environment, returning to in-person activities can prompt mixed emotions among unique individuals.

JLA member and licensed psychologist and therapist, Kelly Bodú, says the effect comes from everyone having different thresholds and tolerance levels to uncertainty, change, and chronic stress from the pandemic.

“The way I explain it to my clients is that everyone has a window of tolerance with a ceiling and a floor,” says Bodú. “That level goes up and down depending on different stressors, but for the pandemic, it eventually pushed everyone across this threshold, but at different times, depending on that tolerance level and individual circumstances.”

As we enter a new phase of the return of more traditional activities, Bodú says it’s important to watch for “a new window of tolerance.” For example, some people may be in a more anxious state, while others may have higher levels of tolerance due to increased resilience.

“Thoughts of ‘am I ever going to feel normal again’ and things like ‘this feels normal, but it also feels weird because we haven’t done it in so long’ are common,” says Bodú.

Being aware that everyone has different comfort levels — and that’s okay — is key to success in these interactions, along with a few other recommendations.

Acknowledgment If you feel like you lost a lot during the pandemic or if you are nervous about being back in person, Bodú recommends acknowledging those losses instead of trying to push through them without feeling.

“If you can become okay with these feelings, then you can move forward,” says Bodú. “To see something positive, you have to be okay with your feelings first.”

Find Something Tangible Once you are okay with your feelings, Bodú says it’s important to explore a little further.

“Consider things like, ‘What did I enjoy before? What did I enjoy the last 2 years?’” says Bodú.

Reevaluate Finally, Bodú recommends reexamining your priorities by determining what you are comfortable with moving forward. As we return to fully in-person operations, this means different things for different people, and that’s okay.

BY STEPHANIE POTTER An important facet of The Junior League of Austin’s mission is to “promote voluntarism.” For many members, this starts at home. JLA provides opportunities not only for children to witness their mothers’ voluntarism, but also to join them.

Active member Sara Jane Cantwell believes exposure is vital. Building a pop-up birthday box was her children’s first taste of philanthropy.

“They could not imagine that any kid might not get a birthday party,” said Cantwell. Her kids also accompanied her to Food In Tummies (FIT) shifts to help them realize how fortunate they are to have food security and to Coats for Kids (CFK) sorting days so they could see the hard work behind the scenes. These experiences have taught them why they should give back and how they can make a difference.

large family and full-time job alongside JLA obligations by choosing In-League Placements, where she can bring her children to JLA activities when appropriate. Her success also involves a carefully coordinated calendar with her husband, who works full-time from home.

Active member Kelsey Hagar remembers playing in the ballroom at the former JLA headquarters on Parkcrest Drive as a child while her mom, Betsey Kirksey, volunteered. These days, Kelsey’s own daughter, Hollis (4), loves to visit the Community Impact Center and will proudly tell you her mom “works here.”

Betsey instilled a spirit of voluntarism in Kelsey by example, taking on significant roles like ACA Chair while raising three kids. Kelsey is now passing the philanthropy torch to her own growing brood.

With a multigenerational history of community service, “community involvement is just what we do,” said Kelsey.

Kelsey’s aunts and cousins are active in JLA as well, and she hopes Hollis will follow in their footsteps. Both Kelsey and Betsy credit their supportive spouses and local extended family for their abilities to raise children, run small businesses, and take on intense volunteer projects, all at the same time.

Sustaining member Suzanne Brown, author of the Mompowerment book series, insists that work-life balance exists and is achievable through “small, consistent steps over time.”

Cantwell acknowledges the challenge of rearing children while volunteering — a challenge she may understand better than anyone, as she sits on eight volunteer boards in addition to her JLA commitments. Setting realistic expectations and boundaries are crucial to balancing parenting and volunteering.

“You have to learn how to say no sometimes, and the League taught me to do that tastefully,” said Cantwell.

Meg Moss, a mother of five, is proud of her choice to support JLA. “I volunteer specifically to model for my kids. If I don’t do it, how will they learn?” said Moss, who manages her

Austin stay committed to the program, even during challenges like the pandemic. Now that the Community Impact Center has re-opened, “Kids get to come up to the building and do what we do,” she said. “It starts planting those seeds.”

Brown advises actively engaging any co-parent and creating “allies, mentors, and sponsors” so you have the support you need at work, at volunteer obligations, and at home. JLA is already acting as an ally by offering a diverse set of volunteer placements reflective of the JLA’s membership and flexible opportunities that accommodate mothers and fulltime working women.

Past JLA President, Kathi Haralson, said she loved volunteering for Drive a Senior, “because you could bring your kids along.” The desire to find volunteer activities that her children could join inspired her to start Kids Giving Back. Still fairly new, this flagship JLA program allows children to connect with their communities through volunteer projects.
