t's a delight to be this year's editor of this wonderful magazine. As a mother of two boys, I witness how fast they grow and how quickly time passes. I was an active member of JLA during the height of COVID. I felt honored to work with an organization whose members are committed to an important cause. Our city is changing, and we are changing with it as a community of women dedicated to bettering Austin. Capitalines intends to be one medium through which we do that.
As lockdowns and restrictions are being eased, we all look for insight into the new direction; the new normal in the calm after the storm. Over the next few years, we will see many changes in how we work, communicate, have fun, and, most importantly, how the League commits to providing aid.

In this issue, we share stories that reflect the values we strive for and the future we hope to build. We discuss the history of JLA, from its humble beginnings as a women's volunteer club, to launching Con Mi MADRE, and the construction of the Community Impact Center. Writers have joined together to share their stories, some uncanny, yet not so strange, to each of us. We also pay tribute to our healthcare heroes, who risked their lives and labored until they were completely exhausted to save as many people as possible. The battle is not yet over, but we have come a long way. As we inspire one another, I think back to one of the poems read at a recent Women’s Fund retreat a few weeks ago that has stuck with me since then, as I, like everyone else, strive to find my voice.

You'd be wrong to think that it's just a slapdash quiz taken in makeshift accommodations. Oh no. I'm standing on the set and I see how strong it is. The props are surprisingly precise. The machine rotating the stage has been around even longer. The farthest galaxies have been turned on. Oh no, there's no question, this must be the premiere. And whatever I do will become forever what I've done.

This year marks our
88th year for The Junior League of Austin.
T
he summer is traditionally a slower time for the League, but that wasn’t the case this year, as we got to welcome our members back to our home – the Community Impact Center, after being virtual for most of last year. Members started gathering in person for meetings, building connections with one-another and breathing life back into the building! Our longest running fundraiser – A Christmas Affair hosted a Virtual Market Showcase – Christmas in July with more than 50 participating merchants in order to support businesses. Our Kids in Cool Shoes program kicked off their first ever shoe drive collecting more than150 pairs of brand new shoes. We hosted a handful of rental events utilizing our indoor and outdoor spaces. And finally our members began training to start their volunteer placements with our 30 nonprofit partners. Just as we had started turning the corner, we, like everyone else in our community, had to once again pivot due to the surge in COVID-19 cases and Delta variant right before the start of the school year. The good news is that we had the tools in place to prepare for this unexpected turn. Last year was the year of pivot, pivot, pivot. And while this year we may need to adjust here and there, we know that we have the resources to quickly adjust when needed. We will continue to be creative and flexible in order to meet the needs of our members and community. We are having virtual or socially distanced meetings, we greeted our 160 new members with a drive-through parade and our Food In Tummies (FIT) program is operating via a curbside model in order to ensure 1,000 kids get food on the weekends in a socially distant and safe way. Our Coats for Kids team is diligently planning for its 35th year and is building on the re-imagined distribution model from last year and utilizing multiple distribution sites this year to ensure we can assist as many children as needed. Finally, our Sí! Spanish Immersion Program is underway with our members learning conversational Spanish, which they will then put into practice out in the community.
Tania Leskovar-Owens President 2021-2022 The Junior League of Austin
We are excited to bring back A Christmas Affair to Palmer Event Center this year. Our team is working hard to ensure we can bring this holiday tradition to you and help raise the critical funds to ensure we can continue supporting our community. Stay tuned to hear more about Austin Entertains and the work our team is doing to support women in the culinary business who have been significantly impacted during the pandemic. We will continue to focus on our members this year. The League does not exist without the women behind it. Research shows that women have been negatively impacted by the pandemic as they took on new roles as teachers and caretakers, while balancing work and voluntarism. Junior League members continue to exemplify how resilient and strong women are when they join arms to help each other and the communities t hey serve. We will operate from our newly created strategic plan that focuses on five pillars: Membership; Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; Sustainability; Organizational Growth; and Community. I am excited to see the growth and change we will create together. I believe all of this change is building a better eague for tomorrow. I am grateful to all of our members, our board and community advisors for their dedication and commitment to the League. Together we will be the change! I look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming events.
LEGACY A LETTER FROM THE
SUSTAINING PRESIDENT
F
all is the perfect time to reflect on the theme for this League year, “Be the Change: Passion, purpose and progress.” As the season changes and we look toward an exciting season of League activities – A Christmas Affair, Coats For Kids, and more, we can all evaluate how we can be part of moving the League forward with passion and purpose. This is how we progress as a community and as a League.
As this year’s sustaining president, I can say I am very proud of what the League has accomplished over the years and where we are headed into the future.
So far this year, we have seen The Junior League of Austin step into this “new normal” with resiliency and strength. It is clear what our purpose and our passion is: we are a group of women that care deeply about serving the community. As we all work to make Central Texas a better and more equitable place to work, live, and play, I have witnessed the resiliency of our volunteers. Our members have carried out hundreds of hours of volunteer work for 30 nonprofit organizations as well as our Signature Programs. And as you know, the volunteering of today looks different than it did just 22 months ago, but I am incredibly impassioned by how these incredible women have worked to fulfill important needs in Central Texas.
The League couldn’t continue to evolve, progress and change without the support and guidance from our Sustainers. Whether it is purchasing a ticket to one of the many events that the League hosts, volunteering for Coats for Kids, or serving as a sustaining advisor, your support can help bolster the League and catalyze a new generation of volunteers and leaders. We can help Be the Change in the League and our community.

The Junior League of Austin
Bridging the Gap By creating a system that continually improves on itself and leaning into the uncertainty of the future, and fortified in the strength of our shared history, Junior League members continue to affect real and measurable change each year, not in spite of, but because of the challenges in the world around them. n 1901, Mary Harriman, the debutante daughter of railroad executive E. H. Harriman was witness to the plight of migrant communities in her home of New York City. She was a 19-year-old socially conscious college student, and she was determined to help. Along with a group of like-minded friends, Mary founded an organization that recognized a problem and ignited action towards solving it. Within a year, there were 80 women ready to help improve the health, nutrition, and literacy of New Yorkers on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

When the COVID-19 global pandemic threatened the mission, JLA and other Leagues around the world, knowing that their initiatives would be more essential than ever, rose to the challenge.

These young women were quickly faced with the reality that their compassion and determination alone were not sufficient to affect change. They needed to be armed with the skills to strategize, organize, and communicate with each other as well as the people they were determined to aid. With this realization, the original Junior League was transformed from a group of volunteers into a training and service organization dedicated to the development of their community through the development of each other. From that point forward, year after year, new chapters developed in new cities. The established groups with successful models, sharing what they have learned about the deployment of resources with these added chapters, and sharing their strategies to form an alliance that broadened not only in geography but in their mission, ability, and will. In the first 20 years of Junior League, members continued to support health, nutrition, education, and promoting access to the arts. They also marched for women’s suffrage and aided the Allies in World War I by selling war bonds and serving in Army hospitals. The end of the 1920s saw Junior League women respond to the Great Depression by opening nutrition centers, day nurseries for working mothers, and training schools for nurses.
The Junior League of Austin 11
Our local chapter, The Junior League of Austin (JLA) was established in 1934. By World War II, local members joined with Junior Leagues around the country and used their well-practiced skills in organization and the deployment of resources to chair hundreds of war-related organizations throughout the country. In the 1960s and 70s, many cities throughout the United States and other countries experienced widespread social turbulence. Junior Leagues again proved their ability to adjust their response as the needs of their communities changed and responded with adapted programs including medical and alcohol dependency clinics, adoption services, and environmental initiatives. In their histories, Junior League chapters have faced challenges unique to their communities. The Junior League of Austin, for example, faced incredulity when then-organizers purchased a building on Parkcrest Drive in Northwest Austin in 1983. Those forward-thinking women established a place where they held meetings, planned, acquired and stored items essential for their projects, and also created income by leasing space to retail tenants. The plan was sound and the numbers were clear, yet they were asked where their husbands were.
12 The Junior League of Austin
Unphased by the criticism, JLA thrived in that location, brainstorming, planning, and preparing signature fundraising events such as A Christmas Affair (ACA), which is now considered the kick-off to the Austin holiday season, and KICS – Kids In Cool Shoes, a program allowing students in need to have new, well-fitting shoes. Volunteers also implemented community programs like FIT – Food In Tummies, which provides healthy food over the weekend to children experiencing meal uncertainty and Con Mi MADRE , a program helping Latinas and their mothers thrive through educational opportunities. Con Mi MADRE saw such success under the JLA umbrella that it has become a separate program that flourishes on its own, a testament to the diligent volunteers and systems that created it. In addition to these programs, JLA also offers a Spanish immersion program, providing optional classes for members to learn to speak the language. After 30 years of successful volunteerism and activities that prepared members for leadership, JLA outgrew the space on Parkcrest. Armed with the experience and knowledge of those who came before them, a new home, the Community Impact Center (CIC), was designed, contracted, and built. The beautiful CIC not only offers a larger and more modern space for JLA primary missions, but also a place
for other community groups to plan and celebrate their own service initiatives, events, and milestones. Speaking of milestones, the anniversary of the CIC is October 17th! When the COVID-19 global pandemic threatened the mission, JLA and other chapters of the Association of Junior Leagues International rose to the challenge knowing that their initiatives would be more essential than ever. Our women in leadership quickly made use of new technology to pivot to online meetings, training opportunities, and events. Last year, JLA held a virtual edition of ACA and a socially distant Coats for Kids event that distributed over 28,000 winter coats for Central Texas children. Members continued to feed hungry children through our FIT program while remaining vigilant about health and safety. In the spring of 2020, our membership finished out the league year by holding a virtual Austin Entertains event, showcasing local chefs and partaking in food and libations from the safety of participants’ homes. Demonstrated in each of these examples is the mission of JLA and The Association of Junior Leagues International. It’s our mission--in action--to serve our community while training and preparing women for teamwork and leadership. In order to perpetuate that mission, League members use the training compiled through the life of Junior League and build upon it. In each year of the Junior League's existence, members have added some of their individuality, diversity,
and experience. It is each unique perspective that adds value to the whole. It is this rich history that provides the tools to tackle the future. It is this road that the force of one of the largest and most effective volunteer organizations in the world has paved. Junior League members may not yet have solutions to all the challenges we currently face, but 120 years of experience says we will not stop until we do.
These young women were quickly faced with the reality that their compassion and determination alone were not sufficient to affect change. They needed to be armed with the skills to strategize, organize, and communicate with each other as well as the people they were determined to aid.

The Wonder of Why Foreword by Stephanie Bazan
Stories are powerful. They help us make connections and offer us better understanding. Have you ever wondered why people join the League or why they continue to commit their time, talents and treasures to serving others? Here are the “Why’s” of three wonderful women:
LINA PALOMARES For several years, I worked as a school social worker and every year, I would work with our school’s Parent Support Specialist to sign families up for Coats for Kids (CFK). My last year at the school, I signed up as a CFK community volunteer and was amazed by how large the event was and the number of kiddos served. I am a heritage Spanish-speaker and many of the families that came through Palmer Events Center that morning were monolingual Spanish-speaking. My shift flew by as I assisted family after family. At the end of my shift’s time, I saw that the line of Spanish-speaking volunteers was small relative to the number of families still in line for coats. I was having so much fun helping families “shop” for coats that I decided to stay a bit longer. My two-hour shift that morning turned into a four-hour introduction to The Junior League of Austin (JLA), the dedication of its membership, and its commitment to the Austin community. I am now in my sixth year as an Active JLA member. I joined the League and remain committed because I really value being part of an organization of women that actively encourages, empowers, and supports each other. JLA has allowed me to not only learn more about the city I currently call home, but it has also allowed me to meet and work alongside many creative, smart, and passionate women. I love seeing the collective impact that JLA membership has on the community and am proud to know that I am part of that impact.

TAMMY DUDEK I became a Junior League member over 10 years ago, and even as my life and my location changed over the years, my decision to remain an active Junior League member has always been an easy one. Through the Junior League, I have made lifelong friendships and am blessed to have a network of amazing women across the country who share my passion for development and community involvement. But the most important thing the Junior League has given me is the opportunity to learn about each and every community where I have lived and worked over the past 10 years. Moving to new cities is never an easy task, but the Junior League has allowed me to not only learn about the history and the needs of my current hometown, but it was also a way for me to easily connect and give back to worthy causes that were having a meaningful impact in those communities.
AMANDA ELDRIDGE My initial interest in joining the League was fueled by a desire to volunteer in my community, but not knowing where to start. I liked that the League had curated and vetted local organizations and provided volunteer placement opportunities. I had also hoped to meet other likeminded women and form connections. Like many who grew up in Austin, I’d moved away after college and was rediscovering Austin as an adult.
I never expected the lasting, deep friendships I would make during my Active years, or the invaluable leadership skills I learned, transitioning from solely volunteering directly within the community, to taking on larger roles within the League. I developed a deeper understanding of how hard this organization works to make a direct and lasting impact on Austin non-profits it serves, and how truly committed the women of the League are to empowering those around them.
Wondering how you can share your “why” story? Email your story of 150 words or less to the communications council at communicationsasst@jlaustin.org. More stories will be shared via JLA social media and LeagueLines, the JLA blog.

JLA on the Frontlines: Saluting Our Healthcare Heroes during the Covid-19 Pandemic By: Jillian Bliss and takes safety measures to protect herself and her loved ones.
The difference 19 months can make: A side by side of Dr. Keller pre-COVID and now in her COVID scrubs.
CAMERON WATKINS KELLER, MD, EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AT NORTH AUSTIN MEDICAL CENTER Cameron Watkins Keller joined JLA last year, in the midst of the pandemic (and while pregnant with her son). She’d wanted to become a doctor her whole life and began practicing medicine several years before. Practicing in the ER, Cameron saw firsthand the effects of COVID not only on those contracting the virus, but also on the medical staff tasked with treatment. “Initially, when we were on lockdown in Spring 2020, the ER was pretty empty. It has steadily gotten busier and now we have all of the regular patients plus COVID patients. The Delta Variant has increased that number even more.” Cameron’s team utilizes safety precautions including N95 masks, face shields, gowns, hair coverings, and isolation rooms for patients. They’ve also been able to implement workflow changes so patients are seen more quickly. As for her personal safety, Cameron said she is vaccinated

“To protect my family, I take off my shoes and jacket outside, immediately take off my scrubs and put them in the washer, and go take a shower,” she said. “I don’t touch any of my family members before I do those things. My son is 11-months-old, so it’s really important to me to keep him safe. My husband actually left his job to stay home with our son so he wouldn’t have to go to daycare or stay with a nanny. Having them home has been so much better for my mental health.”
CHRISTI CAMPBELL, NURSE PRACTITIONER Christi Campbell, JLA Sustainer, was an active nurse practitioner and business owner for the last 25 years. While her practice Contemporary Health Care closed just before the pandemic, she still provides post-acute care and longterm care for the elderly and those with dementia. At the onset of the pandemic, Christi’s team immediately implemented safety protocols to protect their elderly patients. Christi is also regularly tested for COVID to ensure safety. “I think the thing that was most difficult that people didn’t fully realize was that our very frail elders suffered a failure to thrive during the lockdown, and lack of family support,” Christi said. “There are so many sad, but beautiful moments. One precious thing that will stay with me always was being able to do a ceremonial transition blessing for a patient who was dying. Her daughter could not get back from Colorado and outside persons like clergy weren’t allowed in her room during the lockdown. Being entrusted to be there and perform that in that pivotal time was very special.”
SARAH SEVERSON, DDS, LAKESIDE CHILDREN’S DENTISTRY IN MARBLE FALLS Sarah Severson, a pediatric dentist, joined JLA in 2018. Sarah became a dentist following her own positive experiences seeing an orthodontist. While dentistry may not affect COVID recovery like ventilators or vaccines, Sarah stressed the importance of dental hygiene to strenghthenone’s immune system throughout the course of a pandemic. She also emphasized that parents can continue regular dental checkups safely. “Many parents postponed their child’s six-month exam visits for one year or even longer,” Sarah explained. Some families still haven’t felt comfortable returning for routine dental care. Consequently, we’ve seen a rise in decay and larger lesions warranting more extensive treatment than would have been anticipated if care were more consistent.” Sarah’s practice reopened with limited capacity and still takes extra precautions to sanitize surfaces and reduce
“Initially, when we were on lockdown in Spring 2020, the ER was pretty empty. It has steadily gotten busier and now we have all of the regular patients plus COVID patients. The Delta Variant has increased that number even more.” potential exposure. While the effects of the pandemic have been significant, Sarah finds joy in patients’ positive perspectives. “I had a sweet patient, probably 5-years-old, just the other day tell me his elaborate plan of curing the world of COVID,” she said. “He told me in detail how he’d get all the medicine and vaccines he could into airplanes and helicopters and fly to every country in the world and drop it down in parachutes. It was an endearing plan and makes you appreciate the imagination, kindness, and innocence of a child!”
This is a screenshot from the GoFundMe page Christy Grell started to help provide healthy meals for hospital staff.
CHRISTIE GRELL, FOUNDER OF BRAZEN & BOND MARKETING FIRM JLA Active Christie Grell experienced meaningful connections to the healthcare heroes who worked so hard to save her mother during her battle with COVID. “A few days before my mom passed away we did a virtual visit. A nurse in a hazmat suit FaceTimed me inside of her room in the ICU and I was shocked by what I saw – how so many devices were helping people stay alive in an ICU and the fact nurses had to wear hazmat suits. When my mom started to decline, I went into the ICU and visited there. It was like being at ground zero.” Christie’s dad suggested sending medical staff something to eat as a thank you, and Christie wanted to make sure it was healthy food in order to set them up for success. “So I started a GoFundMe. I just posted on Facebook, but by the time I got to Houston to see my mom on Friday donations were up to $1,000. By the time she passed away Sunday, they were at $3,000.” Christie told her mother’s medical team about her fund to send them healthy meals that same Sunday. “They were shocked it was something I even wanted to do in the immediate aftermath of her passing. It’s a lot to recover from. I’m pressing on in finding something positive. This fundraiser has been worthwhile because it’s not about mask or no mask, vax or no vax, it’s very black-and-white: our hospitals are overrun, we need doctors and nurses to keep us alive, so let’s give back to them. This is kind of the gift that keeps on giving.”

Back in Action: Community Placements 2021 The League Gets Back to Serving In-Person With our Community Partners By: Nancy Funkhouser McTyre
W
hile we may not have completely turned the page on COVID-19, we have turned the page on the lockdowns and more restrictive measures that will forever be ingrained in our memories when we recall the year 2020. Moving forward is excellent news for The Junior League of Austin (JLA), our members and our community partners as we return to in-person placements. We have the opportunity to work alongside one another and interact with the members of our community who are the ultimate motivating force behind all we do as JLA membership. Below, we highlight three community partners to see how they pivoted during 2020 and how they are moving forward safely with in-person interactions at the current stage of the pandemic. First, we spoke with Jill Gonzalez, the Executive Director of Women’s Storybook Project of Texas (WSP). WSP is a women’s prison program that connects children with their incarcerated mothers through the joy of literature, with the goal of reducing the rate of re-incarceration by strengthening the mother-child connection. The WSP literature project has
“It’s been such a challenge, but also allowed us to be very creative, to pivot to figure out how to continue being of service to our moms, our clients, without being [physically] there.” Jill Gonzalez, Executive Director of WSP

volunteers travel to female prisons in Texas to record incarcerated mothers reading stories to their children. These recordings provide a chance for children to hear their mother’s voice while they are away. Ms. Gonzalez described the challenges of 2020, especially how, at the time of the sudden lockdown, WSP was serving approximately 250 women through 10 classes. The organization was able to find a way to continue its mission by having volunteers handwrite letters to each woman, asking the mothers if WSP could send a book to their child on their behalf. Once a woman granted permission, WSP would—with the help of masked volunteers—pack a book along with a handwritten note and ship it to the child. Despite mail system delays, WSP was able to fulfill its mission by helping make a personal connection between mother and their child. In a reflection of the good that many of us found in the midst of 2020, Ms. Gonzalez noted how WSP was able to send each mother and child the same book, “The Invisible Strings,” so that the child was able to follow along with the book as their mom read to them when she had phone or video call privileges. The message of “The Invisible break the invisible Strings” was especially fitting during Page Sponsored By: Samantha and Oscar Diaz
water safety at McKinney Falls. By late 2020 and early 2021, Generation SERVE began sending small teams of families to volunteer at events with its service partners. Ms. Krause eagerly reported that, “As it turns out, kids are great at wearing masks, following safety protocol, and are more eager than ever to be of service to the community!” T needs. Ms. Krause noted how grateful she is to the League and how “in this challenging time, [JLA] has stepped up and helped us further our mission.”

these times: nothing can break the invisible strings of love between mother and child, families, or friends even when physically and geographically separated. As we enter the next stage of the pandemic, Ms. Gonzalez is excited about returning to in-person service this October. Of course, WSP modified its in-person service: the group size at each facility is smaller (10-12 moms instead of the usual 22) and only three masked volunteers will be in-person. Only essential recording is done in-person with volunteers handling transcribing and other administrative tasks at WSP’s main offices. Reflecting on this past year, Ms. Gonzalez noted, “It’s been such a challenge, but also allowed us to be very creative, to pivot to figure out how to continue being of service to our moms, our clients, without being [physically] there.”
The third community partner we highlight is the Central Texas Food Bank, the largest hunger-relief charity in Central Texas. The Central Texas Food Bank works with food donors across the country, financial supporters, and volunteers to fill unmet needs in Central Texas. The 13 League members with placements at the Central Texas Food Bank this year prepare food donations for distribution and distribute food at mobile food pantries, a necessity for many in our community who rely on these provisions for their families, especially during the pandemic. League members now distribute food while masked and deliver them to cars—sometimes hundreds—that form lines on distribution days at the Central Texas Food Bank. So, members of The Junior League of Austin, while times may not yet feel completely back to normal, we are at least now able to serve in-person safely at many of our community partners’ placements. As our community partners have adapted, so have we. We have created a new normal (at least for now) that enables us to once again gather, volunteer, and support the League’s community partners. Now, let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work, ladies!

Another community partner we met with is Generation SERVE, an organization whose mission is to engage children in volunteerism and empower them to make a difference in their communities. We connected with Charli Krause, the Deputy Director of Generation SERVE. She described how, though they did cancel almost everything at first and transitioned to virtual for most projects, Generation SERVE never fully stopped doing in-person activities. They were able to continue other work, including sending families to deliver food (in a safe, socially-distanced manner) and helping with outdoor events like educating park visitors on

Austin at a Crossroads How our City is Changing The enormous growth currently engulfing the city of Austin mirrors the trajectory of a successful product launch. By: Lauren Neil-Jeffrey
S
imilar to the social media giant Twitter, whose popularity exploded at Austin’s South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in 2007, both Twitter and Austin existed before, but weirdly, only a few knew about them.
Austin is a great product. From the lakes to the hill country, to the architectural design of structures and the preservation of natural public spaces, Austin is an innately beautiful city. It is also a city brimming with educational opportunity; a diverse culture hub; and filled with cuttingedge technology. Over recent years, leaders at both city and state levels have taken advantage of the spotlight on Austin by offering incentives to big businesses all over the world who commit to the product that is Austin. They have asked these companies to incorporate the human and natural resources found here into their culture, to create jobs from Austin’s talent pool and bolster the city’s economy. It worked, some might say, too well. Just as Twitter has experienced growing pains born of its rapid success, Austin is learning that being successful taxes available resources and requires changes. Along with the benefits of an expanded population, such as increasing wages, more available jobs, and new choices for entertainment, come sharp pains of growth, like rising property values and increased traffic. With an influx of new neighbors, however, comes an opportunity to expand membership in The Junior League of Austin to include more of the best and brightest women from all backgrounds and talents. New members bring new perspectives and talents which can only strengthen their

ability to support The Junior League of Austin and our collective community . While it is undeniable is that Austin looks different than it once did, and progress cannot be reversed. Just as Twitter found its place in the future, so will Austin. Our city may look different, but it will stay its own version of weird.
Just as Twitter has experienced growing pains born of its rapid success, Austin is learning that being successful taxes available resources and requires changes.

hen I was a baby, my parents divorced after my dad left my mom for a new family he started without our knowledge.
My mom never took this as an opportunity to feel sorry for herself or our situation; rather, she got a job and saved money to help set me up for success. With enough begging, I convinced my mom to use some of
this money to enroll me in horse riding lessons. At only six years old, I found my passion. Dreamer, the first horse I rode, taught me all the basics. A few years later, I

advanced to a jumper named Windsor, who took me from trotting around a circle to cantering over jumps. At 16, I got my first horse, a Thoroughbred named Sterling, which also meant getting a job to afford his expenses. Unfortunately, these expenses began adding up after he was diagnosed with cancer. With Sterling’s compromised health, I retired him, and found myself “jumping around” from borrowed horse to borrowed horse for riding lessons. One of these horses was a beautiful gray gelding named Harry. He was well-mannered, tried his heart out, and was absolutely stunning. After getting to know Harry’s owner, I had to ask what on earth she did for a living to afford a horse like him: she was a lawyer and she owned three other wonderful horses just like Harry.
of an aortic aneurysm. I was devastated but, despite the heartbreak, I did not stop riding. With my next paycheck, I purchased a baby horse named Donnie. A Saddlebred like Rocky, Donnie is now four years old and we’ll compete in our first show this fall. During the week, I practice property law, focusing on litigation, at the law firm of Braun & Gresham but, every Saturday, Donnie and I ride together.
The idea of entering the legal profession stuck with me. I’ve always been strong in my convictions and interested in activities that leave a positive impact on others. If practicing law helped me utilize these qualities and afford beautiful horses, it was something I had to consider. In college, I took a work-study job in campus career services and, at one point, was asked to create a brochure about law school. As a journalism major, I realized the research and writing skills I employed at my campus paper weren’t unlike those required to practice law. I found my purpose. Of course, in college I couldn’t afford a horse like Harry, but on my work-study paycheck I could afford something smaller. I purchased a miniature horse named Ollie and, a year later, another named Dare. Throughout undergrad, these two provided all the stress relief a “big” horse could, helping me to progress to law school. Ollie and Dare also helped me progress as an equestrian. Because I could not ride them, I rode at a stable near SMU Law. There I met Rocky and his sidekick Lightning – two horses few others fancied, as Rocky had the tendency to slip into breed-specific gaits, and Lightning, a pony meant to teach kids’ lessons, hated children. Training as a jumper with Rocky, I channeled my law school anxiety into focus and precision in going as fast as possible over fences. Though I didn’t train

with Lightning, learning his quirks taught me what every child needs in a pony. When Victor, a Welsh pony, was gifted to me in 2015, I knew the amount of training I’d need to dedicate to him so he could perform perfectly for kids. In 2017, I graduated law school and took a job but went back to the barn regularly just to ride Rocky. April 15, 2018, was supposed to be one of those rides. The stable hosted a show and we decided to compete after winning a champion and reserve champion title the previous year. During the competition, Rocky and I jumped as usual when, suddenly, he started choking up blood. Thirty minutes later Rocky was gone, dying in my arms
No matter your lifestyle or calling, stories like mine aren’t unique among the women of The Junior League of Austin. As the League pursues passion, purpose, and progress this year, I wish every member the chance to excel in their journey, as well.

JLA Paving the Way with ACA How The Junior League of Austin has continued this holiday tradition despite COVID-19 constraints By: Jillian Bliss This year, Null and her committee members are working hard to reconfigure activities and scale down events in an effort to reduce stress and crowding. “We’ve decided for the first time to move our children’s events away from the Palmer Events Center, giving all children -vaccinated or unvaccinated -- a very special event,” said Null. “Our space and our ballroom at the Community Impact Center (CIC) is two-thirds larger than Palmer.” Children’s events will be held and spread out in the CIC lobby, with “Santa’s Corner” upstairs, other activities in the grove, and dining outside. If additional space for social distancing is needed, the Committee also has a backup plan for use of the garage. “As ACA chair, I’ve always dreamt of having a child participate in ACA events,” said Null. “I want to give them a fun and memorable social experience at the CIC, and one they can take with them always.” Our ACA committee is excited to bring children’s parties back to ACA this year. The 2019 Flannels and Flapjacks party was a hit among children.

At Palmer, the ACA Committee has also planned for changes. After attending other 2021 events there, Null’s team determined that it would be best to cap the number of merchants at 200, allowing for larger booth space with less crowded shopping. The number of tickets issued for parties at Palmer has also decreased, with all shopping parties (including brunch) offering a private shopping experience just for ticket holders.
hough COVID-19 forced the cancellation of large-scale functions last year, The Junior League of Austin wasn’t ready to stop spreading holiday cheer with A Christmas Affair (ACA), and so the 2020 ACA Committee got creative with virtual social and shopping experiences “Sadly, we had to say no to a lot of merchants, but we had to focus on safety first,” said Null. “We are also capping our And this year, the League’s ACA Committee is hard-atmarket day admissions, with market tickets issued only for work to make sure that this famous, festive shopping a specific day. A L ET T ER F RO M A CHR I ST M AS A F FA I R C H A I R It is my pleasure to welcome you to The Junior League of Austin’s (JLA) 46th A Christmas Affair: Dashing Through the Snow. I invite you to join us in person at both Palmer Events Center for shopping and adult parties and The Junior League of Austin’s Community Impact Center for Children’s Events and Santa himself! This year, A Christmas Affair (ACA) is a wintery experience as soon as you walk through the doors. As we bring the holidays to you, notice the décor, private events, and even photography opportunities provide an inclusive experience to all guests. We have been working hard for the last 12 months curating the event to meet our goal of providing a safe, inclusive, and fun holiday atmosphere. The last 20 months have been a difficult journey for so many, and we are proud and excited to have our event in person this year in a safe environment. In an effort to keep our JLA volunteers, ACA merchants, and all guests safe we have touched every detail of our event from our booth layout to the holiday experience you will have at Palmer Events Center. Enjoy shopping your favorite merchants from across the country in the main hall, find several usie opportunities (an usie is a selfie with more than two people, and more inclusive than a selfie), and head upstairs to peruse the Pop Up Shops Thursday-Saturday. Satisfy your hunger at several on-site cafes and food and bar services both downstairs and upstairs. Enjoy your meals under our west canopy or on the beautiful terrace overlooking downtown. For more information regarding your Dashing Through the Snow experience, please turn the page to read about our remarkable wintery adventure up Mount Bluffstone. To my committee: Your passion for our community touches my heart. I have seen the endless hours you have poured into making this an inclusive, safe, and wonderful event for our guests and children. Having A Christmas Affair Dashing Through the Snow in person is so important for tradition and for normalcy during difficult times. Thank you all for being on this journey with me this year, and thank you for Sleighing the Way to ACA! To our Sponsors: A Christmas Affair is made possible by your generosity, The Junior League of Austin volunteers, and the loyal guests who come back year after year to be a part of this special tradition. Your sponsorships and donations to The Junior League of Austin enable us to bring our largest fundraising event to Central Texas. From the joy of children to creating and continuing family traditions, this event kicks off the holiday season in Austin. Thank you for your support and for being a part of this tradition. To our Guests: With your support The Junior League of Austin will continue to raise over $1,000,000 during this 4-day market through ticket sales, auctions & raffles, and booth space rentals. In turn, the monies raised will improve conditions for local children, arts, women, mothers, the environment, animals, seniors, the homeless, families, and ALL people in our community by directly supporting our over 30 community partners as well as our signature programs Coats for Kids, KICS - Kids in Cool Shoes, and FIT - Food In Tummies. Welcome to the 46th A Christmas Affair Dashing Through the Snow. May your spirits be bright as you join us on a ride and sing a sleighing song together. Thank you for supporting The Junior League of Austin as it builds a better community for Central Texas.

WE WELCOME YOU TO
Dashing Through the Snow hosted by The Junior League of Austin
Our team has curated a wintery, alpine wonderland experience as soon as you walk through the doors to A Christmas Affair 2021. At the entrance to Palmer Events Center, imagine yourself on a sleigh ride under the stars at the base of Mount Bluffstone, where we set our scene. Dash through the snow down the main aisle over to the mountain town of Parkcrest Village, where you’ll find our breathtaking 27-foot tree covered in beautiful, white snow. As you venture throughout the town and shop the nearly 200 merchants showcasing their products at ACA, we hope you get “lost in the woods” of all the wonderful goods you will find, laughing all the way. After all of that shopping, make your spirits brighter by sleighing to the bottom of the ski slopes and outdoors cafe in the West Lobby to grab some food or drinks. Then up the mountain you will go on our custom ski lift benches made from actual refurbished 1965 Borvig Ski Lift Chairs, a true piece of skiing history. At the top of the ski lift, find yourself elevated to our grand Ski Chalet Bar and cozy Mountain Lodge for more refreshments and relaxation. Haven’t gotten your holiday tree yet? Well, no worries as you can visit our live Tree Farm and order your holiday tree on the spot! Continue your final ascent upstairs to the summit of Mount Bluffstone where you will find yourself feeling all the wintery joys with more shopping, a private bar with custom Yeti cups, and end with a picture inside a life-sized human snow globe. Should you venture to the Community Impact Center for our Children’s Events, discover the forest home of feathery owls, furry foxes, fluffy bunnies, fuzzy squirrels, and more woodland creatures under a canopy of magical pine trees. During specified times, your children can visit our petting zoo, attend sing-a-longs, enjoy an enchanted tea party, or participate in other winter themed activities such as cookie decorating, crafting, and face painting. Have your child’s photo taken with a variety of special guests like Frosty the Snowman, Dashing, our real-live reindeer, and Santa Claus himself! Our Children’s Events will surely be a snowy good-time.

USIE STATIONS:
During your experience at A Christmas Affair: Dashing Through the Snow, you will have several opportunities to take an usie as you venture up Mount Bluffstone. An usie is a selfie with more than 2 people and more inclusive than a selfie. We hope you will capture these memories and share on social media. Don’t forget to tag The Junior League of Austin and use #AChristmasAffair. FO R M O R E I N FO R M AT I O N V I S I T:

All Decorations can be purchased at the Merchandise Booth by the main Christmas tree during Market Days. If your hands are full, don’t worry, the A Christmas Affair Committee will be hosting a Merchandise Resale at The Junior League of Austin Community Impact Center in the weeks following A Christmas Affair. All proceeds will benefit our community partners.
