organization. Con Mi Madre began as the Hispanic MotherDaughter Program, a League program focused on increasing representation of Hispanic women in higher education through academic and social support for school age girls and their mothers. League Community VP at the time and later President, Sandy Alcala, served as the founding Board President of Con Mi Madre and then went on to be the Executive Director for fi e years. The League continues to support Con Mi Madre with scholarships each year.

The heart of this community's progress is in the JLA recognizing a need, working hard to develop and support programs to meet those needs, and then serving these organizations with trained volunteers. This lifecycle of community service and leadership development is truly the living embodiment of the mission of the League.

This year the League celebrates 87 years of membership and service to the women of Austin and our community. During this time, our city and our organization have seen great growth and change. Back in 1934, Austin had a population of 60,000 residents and today we are pushing one million! The Junior League of Austin has flourished along with ou city and is currently the 5th largest League in the world... and still growing! The Junior League of Austin (JLA) is an organization committed to our members and our community. Our mission is to promote a culture of volunteerism, work to improve our community and focus on the development and training of women. Through our mission, the JLA has been able to support our community and its ever changing needs. Did you know that in 1983 the JLA donated funds to create the Ronald McDonald House of Central Texas? Ronald McDonald House of Central Texas is still a community partner of the League, supported over the years by League funds and volunteers. In 1985, the League sponsored the fourth CASA program in the state of Texas, enabling them to hire their fi st Executive Director. In 2020, CASA serves 80% of the total number of children in Child Protective Services in Travis County and is run by past League President, Laura Wolf. In 2008, Con Mi Madre launched from a League signature program into an independent nonprofit
To date, The Junior League of Austin continues to provide support to the Austin community by providing 160,000+ volunteer hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars of grant funding to local nonprofits each year. The League strives to meet the growing needs of our community with our signature programs: Coats For Kids (CFK), Food in Tummies (FIT) and Kids in Cool Shoes (KICS). These programs are 100% run by JLA volunteers and funded by League fundraisers and generous donor partnerships. In 2020, we have adjusted all areas of our programming to address the ever changing needs of our members, our community and our partners due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, the League will continue to find ays to adapt and grow, reimaging how we will serve our community, our members and raise funds in ways that will be socially responsible and safe for all. Our longest running fundraiser, A Christmas Affair, is celebrating its 45th year as the kick off to the holiday season. This year we are excited to bring the market to Austin virtually! Raising funds to support the essential programs of the League, expanding our support to local nonprofits developing and training women, all while supporting small businesses in Austin and across the country! We are excited to welcome all to our event this year to continue this long standing tradition of connecting and supporting our community. The Junior League of Austin is ready to serve our community and continue to be a force for positive change for Austin and our members. As mentioned earlier, for 87 years The Junior League of Austin has been an integral voice in our city. During times of growth, struggle, celebration and change, we are part of the history of Austin and will continue to be a part of the future.

We are being called upon today to be more creative than ever to not only maintain our relevance, but also to adjust and grow in ways that lead us to a better future.

Committed, Creative, Resilient, and Strong. These words have been used to describe The Junior League of Austin and the women who have lived our mission and supported our efforts throughout our history. In today’s unpredictable times, these traits are being demonstrated in ways that none of us could have foreseen and they continue to serve us well as we lean into the challenges we face together. We are being called upon today to be more creative than ever to not only maintain our relevance, but also to adjust and grow in ways that will lead us to a better future. As the current Sustaining President, I have the privilege of joining virtual meetings with our league leadership to strategize ways to successfully fulfill ou mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community in a world that looks very different than it did this time last year. The ways that we were able to fulfill ou mission in the past is vastly different than it is today. Through these exercises of rethinking our opportunities, I have been impressed with the level of commitment, creativity, resilience and strength that is demonstrated by our league leaders. These women are dedicated to each other and to our community. They stand together in an effort to find ays that we can creatively continue to train our members, who in turn support the greater Austin area. Because of their commitment, creativity, resilience and strength, they will pivot and produce results for each other, our League and our community that are certain to reap benefits or years to come. Now more than ever, our Sustaining membership is being called to support our Active membership as they strive to improve our community. With our help, these women will adapt and adjust. We will celebrate their success together because through their efforts, the city we all love will be a better place.

Building Community with Innovation and Flexibility during COVID-19 Leading with positivity during challenging times By: Britni Rachal
W
hen the world drastically began to change as unprecedented stay-athome orders went into place in March 2020, leaders across The Junior League of Austin (JLA) jumped into action.
“We know this is a crazy time, but one of the things that makes us one of the top growing Leagues is that throughout history we have been responsive to the changing needs of members,” explained Membership Development Council VP, Meagan Longley. “This time is no different.” Throughout the entire pandemic adaptation process, a focus on building a stronger future for the League has been key. After months of member surveys, community surveys, proposals, research, and analyzing different scenarios, this year’s changes not only pivot to the current climate, but the strategic modifi ations will benefit the entire organization for decades to come.
COATS FOR KIDS For the fi st time in 24 years, Coats for Kids (CFK) will move out of the Palmer Events Center. The annual event and coat drive has been part of the Austin community for 34 years, helping to keep more than 35,000 kids warm in 2019. Annually, the event enlists the help of more than 450 JLA volunteers and more than 2,000 community volunteers. “Thankfully, Coats for Kids is embedded in our organization and within the Austin community,” said Rachel Pry, Coats for Kids Chair. “We are all excited to Page Sponsored By: Kendall and Andrew Guinn
evolve to have an even greater impact now and in the future, as we work to better center the program around coat recipients, in distribution locations that are easier for them to access.” Because Distribution Day attendance has dropped each year, the current committee met with past chairs to decide if this would be a good year to move the program to the Community Impact Center (CIC). The overwhelming response—a strong “yes.” Due to the pandemic climate, the chairs and partner organizations KVUE, KVET, and Jack Brown Cleaners knew it would not be safe for kids to try on coats in person this year. By making the switch, the funds typically allocated for venue costs will be used to purchase additional coats. Coat sorting will take place in the covered parking lot of the CIC. Perfect for a pandemic environment, the area is covered, but still outdoors to allow for distancing. For distribution, schools will be able to fill out an online form requesting a specific oat size and three top color choices. The League’s Community Coats Program will also be in full use, providing a resource for nonprofits to request up to 300 coats for agency clients. Donation drives are more important this year than ever. Drop-off locations will still exist at Jack Brown Cleaners, and the push for online donations will be higher, including options to gift through a designated Amazon Wish List. Members of the Austin community who have volunteered for decades are still needed, but in different roles. For example, corporations who normally sent volunteers for The Junior League of Austin 9

Distribution Day are now considering hosting in-person and virtual coat drives. These moves are great steps for the program. Mobile coat fittings will li ely be the future of Coats for Kids. Once the pandemic is over, the League hopes to continue mobile delivery throughout the city to deliver coats directly to communities in need.
A CHRISTMAS AFFAIR A hallmark of tradition within the Austin community, A Christmas Affair (ACA), the holiday market that raises funds for JLA programs and more than 30 local nonprofits is taking an unprecedented step this year, moving to a fully-virtual format, allowing shoppers and party-goers to participate at home. The new format is temporary; however, all future shopping markets will likely have some online aspect, allowing the event to host higher volumes of vendors, along with family and friends who live out of state. As trailblazers on a national level, The Junior League of Austin was the fi st League chapter to decide to pivot the holiday market virtually. Since making the decision, the committee has since been providing advice and sharing strategies with other chapters. “We made the decision early on because we wanted to set ACA up for success. Choosing the virtual format gave us the opportunity to see the win, and have control over it,” said ACA Chair, Keri Walling. “This is not a band-aid or a contingency plan in the age of COVID-19. Instead we chose to take a strategic approach that will really grow A Christmas Affair for the future.” Now in its 45th year, the holiday market is known for kicking off the holiday season within the Austin community. That sense of community tradition will be 10 The Junior League of Austin
available, featuring holiday shopping on a new website. ACA parties will take place virtually, with curbside pickups and delivery of food and drink kits. A favorite for children, the gingerbread house party will include a Zoom dance party, and socially-distant appointments will be available for photos with Santa. Chips and salsa, cocktail kits, and succulent making kits will provide a new twist to a virtual ACA Girls’ Night party, keeping this year’s Felicidad theme in mind. The six-day holiday market raises approximately $800,000 each year on average, and the new online format will allow JLA to highlight more about the community programs that benefit f om ACA.
FIT Food in Tummies (FIT) is one of the programs that benefits f om funds raised through ACA. The League established FIT in 2009 to deliver backpacks of food for children to take home over each weekend of the school year to address food insecurity, as 88.5% of children in Del Valle Independent School District (DVISD) are considered economically disadvantaged. This year’s committee is still committed to serving 240,000 food items to children within the Del Valle school district. The program quickly adapted to school closures in March, making arrangements to distribute food at off-site locations, at a time when some children needed the extra meals the most. “We have been taking this challenge and embracing it,” said FIT Chair, Carolyn Ragsdale. “What carries me through is the passion and commitment of women on the committee. We’ve been recreating a whole new way of doing things so that we can complete the League’s mission.”

With new social distancing guidelines in the FIT pantry, program volunteers have been working nonstop since April to continue filling bags with ood to deliver to students within Del Valle ISD, providing weekend nourishment for children who may experience uncertainty about when they will receive their next meal.
COMMUNITY PLACEMENTS / JUNIOR LEAGUE UNIVERSITY Flexibility is the focus for this year’s community placements. Some organizations are now offering virtual volunteer experiences. For example, virtual mentoring for girls in grades 3–12 is now happening with longtime partner, Girls Empowerment Network – Austin. To ease with transitions and develop new plans, the Placement Committee conducted one-on-one Zoom calls with representatives from all 30 community partners. “Leadership is working hard to be fl xible, but also to provide a meaningful experience for everyone involved,” said Sara Guitierrez, Placement Chair. For those who are unable to fulfill their community placements this year, the League is offering a new option: Junior League University. With four robust and fl xible educational tracks, the program will promote diversity and inclusion, board training, fund development, and learning under practice. Organizers anticipate between 100-150 members will enroll in this option. “Building up our members is a priority, so that when the world becomes a place where we can be out again, we are all better prepared to serve our community,” said Longley. With 2,586 total members, The Junior League of Austin will continue to set an uplifting example of leadership within the Austin community. Building for a stronger tomorrow by strengthening programs and creating opportunities out of what would otherwise be a very challenging time, the League is proud to showcase the importance of finding the positive in even the most challenging situations.

Happy First Birthday, CIC! Reflections on Our Community Impact Center’s Inaugural Year By: Jennifer Wu
I
t is hard to believe that over a year has passed since the August 2019 move to our new home at the Community Impact Center (CIC). What began as a nascent dream over 10 years ago became a reality after years of strategic planning, fundraising, and meticulous design and construction. The Junior League of Austin said goodbye to its former headquarters on Parkcrest after more than 35 wonderful years in the space and relocated to over 48,000 square feet at the CIC. Before the move, members worked tirelessly to pack decades of League history, memorabilia, merchandise, and supplies. The move took place over three intensive days at the end of July and into early August, and members spent the next several weeks unpacking, sorting, and settling in to our new home. Everything came together beautifully, just in time for us to hold our fi st “Welcome Home!” General Meeting in September at the CIC. Over 600 members attended the historic event—more than two times the number than could fit in ou former headquarters at any one time.
we knew it to a grand pause, and the League, like all other organizations during this difficult period pivoted to adapt to changing times. “To ensure the safety of our League members, staff, and building, access to the CIC was restricted to essential League business, and The Junior League of Austin has been following local and state public health orders and guidance, such as mask wearing, distancing, and limited gathering sizes,” said Laura Cesaro, who served as Headquarters Chair for the 2019–2020 League year. The FIT Committee quickly commandeered the ballroom and revamped logistics so volunteers could adhere to social distancing guidelines while continuing to pack and deliver thousands of backpacks of shelf-stable food each week to the students of Del Valle Independent School District. The External Events committee has worked tirelessly with our rental clients to rethink event bookings. While some rental clients have opted to reschedule

Because the CIC was designed with more than just League operations in mind, members were excited for visitors to come experience the inviting space. The External Events committee began fielding equests from community organizations throughout Austin to book our ballroom and meeting rooms for their programming. Throughout the fall, The Junior League of Austin settled in to optimize and expand the operations and execution of our many signature programs—Food In Tummies (FIT), Kids In Cool Shoes (KICS), A Christmas Affair (ACA), and Coats for Kids (CFK). Ask any member of The Junior League of Austin and she will likely tell you, “This is a training organization!” is an oft-uttered mantra. Members say it, in jest, when technology fails us. Members often say it, in jest, when summoning the courage to overcome a fear of public speaking or when faced with daunting tasks and short deadlines. And, members may even say it, in jest, when (despite our best efforts!) things do not go as planned. But members often say it with wholehearted sincerity, when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges— and then proceed to persevere, persist, and overcome. The Junior League of Austin is 100% volunteer-led and volunteer-based, and this year’s challenges have provided boundless opportunities for growth and development at all levels. For those training opportunities, our members are truly grateful.

Showcasing the League's Kids Giving Back Initiative By: Jennifer Wu
Voluntarism. Service to Community. Leadership. These pillars of The Junior League of Austin lie at the heart of our mission to serve our community. They permeate all that we do—from programs like Food In Tummies (FIT), our perennial partnership with Del Valle Independent School District (DVISD) to deliver thousands of backpacks containing shelf-stable food each week to students across 10 elementary schools this year; to Coats For Kids (CFK), our annual coat drive which distributes over 35,000 coats to children in need across Central Texas each winter; to A Christmas Affair (ACA), our annual tradition 45 years in the making, which brings together merchants from all across the country to host a fi e-day holiday market to raise funds to support FIT, CFK, and our more than 30 local community non-profit partne s annually. This past June, through the newly revamped Kids Giving Back initiative, members of The Junior League of Austin embraced a new avenue to share these pillars of voluntarism, service to community, and leadership with our children—the next generation of leaders. The vision of the Kids Giving Back Committee is to promote the development of voluntarism within the families of the members of The Junior League of Austin. This is achieved through leadership training and service learning within Central Texas. The History of Kids Giving Back Over the last decade, members of The Junior League of Austin have brainstormed creative ways to introduce the spirit of voluntarism to their children, through requesting community placements with organizations like Generation SERVE (formerly Little Helping Hands), signing up for kid-friendly volunteer events, and planning special projects from time to time. Although demand for these opportunities frequently exceeded the number of 20 The Junior League of Austin
openings, it was difficult to implement a standing program since opportunities and interest ebbed and fl wed each year. Four years ago, passionate League members decided to reinvigorate this program which initially began in 2009 to create more longstanding, targeted programming and instill voluntarism and philanthropy in our youth. Tima Brown, chair of this year’s Kids Giving Back Committee, and longtime League members Kelly Tarun and Katie Turner found out in early March that they were selected as Kids Giving Back Committee members for this year. Brown, Tarun and Turner were passionate about planning special programming for all League members to share with the children in their families, and they quickly got to work to execute their ideas. By early April, the committee had created a logo, cemented the Kids Giving Back vision, and planned events for the start of the new League year on June 1. Their objectives were two-fold: (1) brainstorm fun and creative ways for members and the wonderful children in their lives (daughters, sons, nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren—all are welcome!) to

make a positive impact on our community, and (2) have fun while doing so. Creative Programming in a Time of Social Distancing Launching a new program amidst a global pandemic demanded considerable creativity and ingenuity. Work/ learn-from-home protocols have been in place since March, and the Kids Giving Back Committee prioritized health and safety while designing innovative monthly projects that could be done with social distancing measures in place.

In June, the committee announced its fi st project of the year, focusing on the Healthcare Heroes at UT Health— frontline medical workers and personnel bravely fig ting the pandemic and treating patients every day. With social distancing protocols in place, the committee hosted a drive-through “parade” in the Community Impact Center’s Circle Drive and collected thank you cards and pictures for COVID-19 response team personnel. Following the parade, the committee partnered with Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q, who generously donated breakfast tacos and coffee, and made a contactless delivery to UT Health to let the Healthcare Heroes know they are celebrated and appreciated. For their July project, Mace Massingill, 13, son of Sustaining Member Holly Mace Massingill, led the Kids Giving Back #NoHunger Food Drive. Mace trained more than 20

Food Bank. The committee also planned a Christmas in July event to honor the Healthcare Heroes of St. David’s and delivered thank you notes, cookies and coffee to the hospital. In August, Harris Tarun, age 9, son of committee member Kelly Tarun, posted an instructional video for a packat-home project to teach other children how to make Homeless Helper Bags, filled with disposable mas s, mini bottles of hand sanitizer, socks, water and a snack. More than 20 children participated, and 325 Helper Bags were donated to Mobile Loaves and Fishes for distribution. And, to kick off the new school year, Tomas and Nico Owens, ages 9 and 6, sons of President-Elect Tania Leskovar-Owens, created and led a virtual Back to School backpack drive. They made a tutorial for packing backpacks filled with school supplies or kids in foster care, and 59 backpacks were donated to Foster Angels of Central Texas for distribution.
Building a Lasting Legacy As is evident from this year’s programming thus far, Kids Giving Back is committed to remaining kid-led and kidfocused. Rather than simply sending League members written directions to instruct their little ones, the Kids Giving Back Committee has found ways to allow our young leaders to shine by giving them the opportunity to create instructional content and lead other children. The committee’s primary role is coordinating logistics for donations to our various community partners once a project is completed. As Brown puts it, “The true joy of Kids Giving Back is fostering the values central to our League’s mission statement in our children and empowering this next generation to continue our legacy of supporting our community.

A LETT ER F ROM A CHRISTMAS A F FA IR CH A I R Keri Bellacosa Walling Greetings from the innovative A Christmas Affair 2020 Committee: We find ourselves truly in the middle of history in the making. We can all attest to what a different year this has been. It has brought uncertainty about our health and safety, our livelihoods, our ability to gather and has forced us to rework nearly every aspect of our lives. We have also discovered our strength and perseverance. Amidst all the change, A Christmas Affair is proud to hold strong in bringing happiness into people’s homes despite a global and local crisis. In its 45th year, A Christmas Affair remains Austin’s iconic tradition that kicks off the holiday season, attracting tens of thousands of guests of all generations each year, including my own family from across Austin and up from San Antonio. A Christmas Affair supports not only the small and mid-size business community of which our merchants make up, but our event also pours back into our Central Texas philanthropic community, raising signifi ant funds for more than 30 area non-profit o ganizations. F or these reasons, we couldn’t let COVID-19 take away this tradition, or the great impact A Christmas Affair has on our city and beyond. Today, I thank and recognize our committee of 85 women volunteers who thoughtfully and strategically re-imagined A Christmas Affair, as they too are juggling families at home, managing distance learning for their children, keeping their careers afloat all while having the health of their families and themselves top of mind. This committee took our beloved holiday gift market completely virtual in record time, making history of our own. This bold pivot expands the opportunity for reach, impact and influen e not just for 2020, but for years to come. The Junior League of Austin is the fi st league across the country to make the move to a virtual fundraiser, blazing the trails and providing a model for other organizations, and increasing the impact of A Christmas Affair events in the future. This year’s theme, F elicidad, means happiness in Spanish. Growing up in San Antonio, I was
surrounded each year by joyful holiday traditions wrapped in the strong Hispanic heritage of putting family and community fi st. It is my hope to bring a piece of felicidad to A Christmas Affair this year, and to continue to share the happiness of the holidays and our League’s hard work with others. Even though we are unable to walk through an event center adorned in F elicidad décor, you can’t help but take notice of the bright and festive details of our Virtual Marketplace, reflecting the happiness The Junior League of Austin has shared with the community for 45 years. In addition to serving the community, a large part of the mission of The Junior League of Austin is developing the potential of women. This year, our team has grown in our leadership, our skills, and our ability to pivot and lead in times of change and crisis. I am forever grateful for this committee and the League leadership’s support, and I am extremely proud of everything we have accomplished. It has been one of the highest honors of my life to serve and lead in the role of A Christmas Affair Chair during such a historic time. My sincerest hope is that you enjoy the traditions of A Christmas Affair this week. After a year full of change, soak up the holiday event you’ve come to count on each November.
